When I read this one I thought it was a really good story, but the background from O'neill's point of view made it pretty clear that what happened to him during the season 6 episode" The Abyss" had affected him more deeply then show made it seem.I think that the only thing in the story that was un-necessary was bringing in that arrogant archeologist and since she seemed to go along the lines of what Daniel's college rival was like in the season 4 episode" The Curse" and continued not to take things to seriously throughout the entire book was what had made things even worse. For Daniel's point of view most of the story involved him getting most of his memories back and then this came up and that made you pretty sympathetic to his feelings on the matter, especially since it dug into the roots of his friendship with O'neill that was never mentioned in the show too much. I have to say that this is one of the best in the new stargate series and I recommend this one to any who like the series.

Trial by Fire is a good book for those rainy afternoons. Good use of the character profiles from the show in developing the plot. The timeline of this book is consistent with season 7 when Daniel Jackson has returned.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate fan novels.......2007-02-27

The Stargate fan novels are very true to the characters and are the equivalent to watching an episode on SCI FI, only in most cases better. Some of the books are just new adventures written by fans, good, but not great. While others are Great adventures where the author actually expands on the depth of the character and team, fills in gaps that us fans have always thought or guessed about. So far all the SG-1 books have had Jack in them, not Cam. I am using this as a generic review for all the books rather than risk spoiling anything in the stories. I have watched all episodes in the series (both SG-1 and SG-A), heck I own every published season, and as much as I hate to admit it I have seen every episode at least twice, in short, I am a Stargate nut. I have purchased all books written in the SG-1 and SG-A series, though not all of them through Amazon due to availability. Sometimes the shipping takes a long time since they are published in the U.K.

If you are a true fan of the show - then you will love this book. This reads just like and episode and the dialog is perfect and true to the TV characters. It will keep you turning the page.

The author did a fantastic job and would love to see more from them.

The story continues with the book "Cost of Honor" and picks up right where this one leaves off - it was just like watching a two part episode.

    Fun read.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying, quick and fun.......2006-10-12

"A Matter of Honor" by Sally Malcolm is a catchy story about SG-1's visit to P4X-481, a planet that has some interesting security technology and even more interesting gravitational machinery. Ordinarily that would be enough for two episodes worth of adventure, or equivalently one trade paperback from Fandemonium Books. Because the adventure has a well wrapped Baal tie-in, a Senator Kinsey hook, and all the pull of the planet-chomping black hole from the season 2 episode, "A Matter of Time" -- it rates a royal treatment -- a double book presentation. "A Matter of Honor" is the first part of the story, and "The Cost of Honor" is its conclusion. The plot of "A Matter of Honor" is very well done. It reads as fast as it is fun.

The hardest thing in the SG-1 universe for an author to do is to get the characterizations right. Sally Malcolm did an admirable job bringing our favorite Jaffa, Teal'c, to life in the pages of this book. The mannerisms were spot on. His subtle humor was natural and effectively presented. I liked her presentation of General Hammond very much.

In three places in "A Matter of Honor" the author missed the characterization mark. These EXTREMELY jarring gaffs happened in the characterization of Samantha Carter and Jack O'Neill. The first happens very, very early in the story when Samantha Carter thinks about when she will HAVE to relieve Colonel O'Neill of his command. There is an unfortunate and out of place discussion of military service being equivalent to legalized murder. The last and most appalling is when Colonel O'Neill shoots Teal'c in the ear because he mistook Teal'c for an enemy. Daniel Jackson, Teal'c, Samantha Carter and Jack O'Neill are heroic characters. The SG-1 canon has never wavered on that point. Taking liberties with the heroic nature of these four characters is -- CHEATING. Don't do it! These three miscues are the only weakness that mattered to me in the story because the storyline is so strong and (otherwise) well done.

This book is definitely worth a read, even if you have to hold your nose to cross three bad paragraphs. All the rest of the 236 pages of "A Matter of Honor" are a pleasure to read.

4 out of 5 stars So far best of the bunch.......2005-11-13

Finally Stargate Tie-in novels. I read TV tie-ins to relax my brain, I write fan fiction to de-stress from my commercial writing as there are no "expectations" to fulfil. Unfortunately too many TV tie-in writers (Highlander, anyone?) write the novels as if they were writing "just fan-fic" to no expectation of quality and are clearly blinded by $ signs. On saying that, A Matter of Honor is a very good book, though I've given it 4 stars for Sally Malcolm's obvious effort rather than strictly the book's content. Let's hope Fandemonium sensibly retain this author.
The plot of the book is how an opportunity to rescue Major Boyd from the black hole is presented to SG-1. It doesn't go well (hence the sequel). I'm not going to lengthily describe the plot as that would spoil it. Ms Malcolm's SG-1 are finely drawn characters and most importantly she does her best to include those exchanges of dry wit amongst them that make the show so enjoyable. She keeps a good pace and strong dialogue throughout. Some writers use a tie-in as an excuse to be gratuitously graphically gory or macho gung-ho in a way the show won't allow, and Ms Malcolm thankfully avoids this very well. She also doesn't have SG-1 acting in completely uncharacteristic ways, such as in Sacrifice Moon where Daniel is unbelievably willing to risk his friend's lives and friendship with flimsy justification.
Of course there are flaws, mainly that Teal'c is the one who often comes through as stilted. There's an art to writing formal diction (how Teal'c talks) and it's a pain mostly. The main problem is so much of Stargate communicates on the visual level -Teal'c's "eloquent stillness" being the prime example. Watch any given episode and note how Jack & Daniel, Jack & Teal'c, Sam & Daniel, etc., do nothing more than exchange raised eyebrows yet convey 10 minutes worth of conversation. It's hard to convey that on the page without becoming tediously repetitive (I should know, fanfic, remember?)Occasionally this leads Ms Malcolm's SG-1 towards being wooden, but this is entirely forgivable - trust me, as a writer, it's difficult to maintain this balance especially when you are aiming at particular audience (for instance, I dislike the tendency for Rodney McKay in Atlantis to be a 1 dimensional comic character. He said, "My parents hated each other and took it out on me", which indicates at the least mental cruelty and probably beatings received from his parents' fists. So far however this dark edge to the character has been totally ignored). In short, if you are going to "try" a Stargate TV Tie-in, I strongly recommend that you use A Matter of Honor as the gauge of quality, because it's a strong, positive effort.

    5 out of 5 stars mission recap.......2007-07-26

After watching the episode that this book was based on. I had been wondering about what the follow-up was for months after and I've got to admit that I'm impressed with the story. You can almost hear the characters thoughts of what that previous mission had done to their friend-ship especially between O'neill and Daniel. But if there was one major flaw in this story and the show then it would be with the Tok'ra. I also thought that to bring one or two previous episodes such as the season 2 episode" Need " and episode " Politics" was a good subtext in it-self. All in all, I recommend this to any who like the series.

    3 out of 5 stars Quick read.......2007-05-12

This book flows rapidly and predictably. Still for any SG1 fan is a worthwhile and fun book.

    5 out of 5 stars Alliances-a great read for SG-1 fans.......2007-01-14

This book is a great pick up from what might have happened after the Euronda fiasco. It combines many threads from other episodes and ties them together neatly. The writer captures the personalities of the characters well, so well that you do not miss a beat in thinking this is the way O'Neill or Jackson or any of the other SG people would react to the events happening around them. You hate Kinsey, you have mixed feelings for the Tok'ra, horror at the existance of the slave farms and what SG-1 has to go through to in order to accomplish their mission. Its great read and I highly recommend it to Stargate fans!

    3 out of 5 stars Fair.......2007-01-10

I found the plot promising. The characterization of Jack and Jacob were spot on, but I found Daniel's character way off (especially, in Chapter 19). I also kept wondering if this was a team story, where was Teal'c? Teal'c doesn't come into the story until the end.

For a Stargate story, it's fair. Better than the last novel 'Survival of the Fittest'.

4 out of 5 stars A Slow Start, but Otherwise an Excellent Read!.......2006-12-31

I bought "Alliances" thinking it was the first in the new SG-1 series, since according to the product details, this book was published January 2006, prior to the other novels. However, the book itself is stamped with #8... and in the back are ads for the first seven books. Much to my relief, however, the book stood alone -- it did not matter that I hadn't read the rest of the series, it was still completely enjoyable.

For anyone wanting to read them in order:
#1. "Trial By Fire" by Sabine C. Bauer
#2. "Sacrifice Moon" by Julie Fortune
#3. "A Matter of Honor" (part 1 of 2) by Sally Mslcolm
#4. "City of the Gods" by Sonny Whitelaw
#5. "The Cost of Honor" (part 2 of 2) by Sally Malcolm
#6. "Siren Song" by Holly Scott and Jaimie Duncan
#7. "Survival of the Fittest" by Sabine C. Bauer
    #8. "Alliances" by Karen Miller

The novel started out slow, and I found the initial plot setup rather contrived. The event that sets everything else in motion did not seem realistic to me. The characters were out of character, so to speak, and there were some inconsistencies. But, I realize that the author needed some way to have it necessary for SG-1 to be out of the way for a while.

In the beginning, there were many little things that drove me crazy... Like Jack calling Daniel's artifacts "doodads" *seven* times just in the first three pages. Or Daniel saying that Sam was "making love to the naquadah generator" with Jack soon confirming that she "was indeed making love to the naquadah generator"... a cute expression, except that they gave no indications that this was just a figure of speech, and Jack's saying, "No accounting for taste..." made it seem disturbingly literal. Plus, there were a few places where things contradicted themselves, usually on the same page or within a few pages, but these were mild and not critical issues.

Because of the uneven beginning, I was expecting to have to endure the rest of the novel, but happily, once the Tok'ra got involved, the plot started picking up. And when the undercover mission began, I was seriously hooked. I read the entire novel in about three hours! The author did an excellent job of capturing the characters' personalities, mannerisms, and interactions with each other. The storyline had plenty of variety to keep things interesting, with enough peace in-between disasters for you to catch your breath.

It is obvious that the book was written by a British author, even though she took pains to Americanize it. Every so often, a strange expression would appear, a word I'd never heard of, or a strangely spelled word. It happens often enough to remind you of the book's orgin, but the story itself is good enough that it shouldn't distract too much.

Overall, I was very pleased with the book. *Much* better than the original Stargate SG-1 novel by Ashley McConnell. I'm glad they decided to start over and release a new series! I give Four Stars only because of the trouble in the beginning, otherwise it's great! I am now looking forward to ordering the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate team on the go and dealing with past enemies and old problems.......2007-06-20

With this one you have to wonder why they bothered on bringing in that arrogant senator since he has been nothing but trouble since the end of season 1. I really think that they should've of done away with him years before this one came up. But the story had a nice touch to it.All the characters were there and they had a nice line with thier off-world friends that brought up the old "don't mess with alien technology when you don't know what you're doing" cliche not to mention reference of bringing up the sarcophagus which from the issue in the season 2 episode "Need" basically made it pretty clear just how dangerous that technology could be if used to many times as well as the devices' origin in that season 7 episode. But all in all it was a really good story and I recommend this to any who like the story and the tv show.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but has potential..........2007-10-01

This book has many good things about it, such as an interesting story, historical context, plenty of plot, and several references to previous novels and episodes of the show. A few things seemed a bit far-fetched, such as Daniel's rival archeologist friend going off the deep end by turning cannibal and pretending to be an Aztec god. But most of the story was believable, and the main characterizations were excellent.

The one thing that I found completely unacceptable is the fact that the author never follows through with her cliffhangers. The point of a cliffhanger is to end a scene with a dramatic situation in order to hook the reader so they continue reading. But if you don't follow through and deal with the problem presented in the cliffhanger, it cheats the reader out of that resolution.

Several times the author ends a chapter with a series of climactic events; for example, while Daniel is visiting an ancient temple in Mexico it collapses, leaving him trapped inside and knocked unconscious by falling rocks. As a reader, I was eager to know what happened: how he survived, how he escaped, all of that. However, the author altogether skips the resolution of Daniel's dilemma--the next day, Daniel is suddenly back home, safe and sound! He mentions the cave-in as though it were unimportant, reminding us how he got knocked out, and gee, wasn't it lucky that Teal'c happened to be right behind him in the temple and was able to drag him out of the building before it collapsed on them both....

In "City of the Gods", the author constantly leaves cliffhangers without being properly resolved. She diminishes the import of every climactic scene, because she repeatedly skips the resolution and, instead, later gives a brief summary of what happened. Why should I bother getting worried about the characters when something bad happens if I already know that the author isn't going to show what happens? I don't want to hear second-hand that someone rescued the hero or that he managed to escape--I want to read what happens for myself.

As far as I am concerned, this is a pretty serious writing flaw: one that marks the author as an amateur. But, as I said, she has other good qualities as a writer and lots of potential. So if you're not a picky reader, go ahead and give this book a try! Hopefully, as Ms Whitelaw writes more she'll learn to follow through with her cliffhangers; when that happens I will be pleased to buy more of her books.

    1 out of 5 stars Amateur Stuff.......2007-09-10

Terrible going...as slow as wading through molasses. To make matters worse, Daniel Jackson's Grandfather, Nick Ballard, vanishes partway through the novel with no explanation, and is never seen or spoken of again. I wish they had more professional writers handling this series.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Fan .......2007-05-23

When I first read the book it brought up some parts of the groups past that didn't make too much sense till you read the other stories and then saw on the show that it all clicks in. One of those facts were from some of the key parts in the series were from seasons 1,2,& 3 episodes Fire and Water, Need, the information on Carter's episode as a host and the symbiote' memories, their encounter with the quantum mirror and the Crystal Skull which bring up a lot of information and the type of traumas that they all have to deal with as a group like losing a friend and a team-mate, but the back story of Daniel's past and bringing in his grandfather wasn't really necessary. I liked the idea that they focused most of this on Carter since nearly all of the books were focused on either O'Neill or Daniel and it was time that they gave Carter center stage this time around. But I have to admit that the issue with Daniel's former teacher brought back another good piece of background like his rivalry with another archeologist from the Season 4 episode " The Curse" was pretty interesting as well. Another issue that they brought up was O'neill and Carter's relationship even though neither wanted to admit it that they loved each other, but that was a nice piece in it-self as well. The diary that they put in there from Daniel's knowledge was a nice touch since it gave information on a previous planet that they went to and then the issue with dealing with the loss of a few allies like the mention of Narim and that ambassador that was killed a few weeks earlier was a nice touch as well. All in all I recommend this one to any who like the show.

1 out of 5 stars Worse than a history lecture!.......2006-11-12

Don't get me wrong I like Daniel...But reading chapter after chapter of Whitelaws having him prattle on was just TOO much. Knowledge of a subject is great, but doesn't make for an intersting novel. Way to much info. The story was disjointed and I didn't believe her character portrayals of SG-1. Boring! The two Honor books were 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2006-02-26

I'm actually extremely pleased with this novel, and found myself immensely entertained. I suspect this is in good part because I am both prepared and capable of distinguishing history from science fiction.

As a student of meso-American culture, I can state that no culture remains fixed throughout time. The Aztec culture exists today in a totally different way than it existed in the tenth century. Once one then takes this culture into a purely fictional framework, off to another planet, and twisted it to suit the machinations of a Go'auld that itself was considered an atrocious creature even by Ra's standards, it is most certainly going to be gruesome and differ from the Aztecs of past that some textbooks portray in an idealized light. As to the chocolate, of course it was never produced as candy bars, but I chuckled at the way it cleverly connected Quetzalcoatl to O'Neill. The author has taken genuine research, married it to mythology and come up with an excellent and original plot.

I automatically suspend my disbelief when I read novels like these. They are a fun detour from the real world, and I see them purely for their entertainment value. Since the series itself takes us all on an excursion from reality every week, I would have personally been disappointed if this book had attempted to foster upon us something else. Equally, I am pleased that the author did not over-simply an intriguing story.

Whether one could possibly stand so close to volcanoes without being cooked - based on the extraordinary images on her website, it appears the author had no trouble with such encounters in real life!

As to characterizations, I was gratified to note that the author dealt with them in a mature and insightful manner. I enjoyed the way each team member was presented - more so in this novel than in others from this particular series.

I would liked to have seen a longer story, as I feel the end was somewhat short and that some scenes could have been fleshed out more, but again, this was in keeping with the series which is of course subject to the restrictions of time. No doubt the publisher must have an upper word limit for similar reasons as the show's producers have a time limit. I understand that MGM approves of each novel and therefore, feel quite comfortable in reading it as canon. Having said that, as with everything else about this novel, it has remained very faithful to the series. For all of those reasons, I'm giving it five stars and would highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to this author's treatment of the spinoff Atlantis series.

I read the first few Stargate SG-1 novels that were released and almost never picked up another one. The author wrote from the movie and just never seemed to connect to her story. Ms. Bauer is obviously a fan of the television series. I thought the characters were right on target. A really well done novel, and I hope to read more from her.

5 out of 5 stars direct opinions .......2007-05-24

This one was a good one since the time-line took place between the season 5 episodes " The Fifth Guy, Right of Passage,The Menace, and Meridian" so they gave further information on their encounter with another system lord and the NID rep that replaced their biggest enemy in the first 3 seasons. I'd say that the only problem with this one was the need to create a further scape-goat in this one not to mention creating a six-way story line between the main characters and turning Fraiser into the victim was a good idea, but they took that one a little to far by the end of the story and it started getting annoying after a little while. But this was a very good story and I recommend it to any who like the show.

5 out of 5 stars first team mission.......2007-06-24

This one was really good one, but I noticed that it took place from Jack's point of view and his feelings for his team were already starting to grow strong. All the issues were there including they were just getting used to working together and for Daniel he was just getting used to being back with his original team-mates and being on earth again, but at the same time dealing with the loss of his wife for a while. The story got off to a slow start, but by the middle of the book it was really interesting since it was more along the lines of going into the season 1 epsiode" The Broca Divide" since they were being infected with another piece of alien technology just before they had to deal with it. All in all it was a really good story and I recommend it to any who like the series.

4 out of 5 stars Reads just like an episode.......2007-04-25

This truly does read like an episode right off of TV. Although the story doesn't read like it's their first mission and there are a few too many times the author has Daniel Jackson use the term/word "God" and a few other small details in dialogue - it reads well and keeps you interested until the end. Very nice storyline and a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book !!!!.......2006-10-17

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of stargate and have read a lot of fanfiction. I was very undecided about purchasing this book because I was actually looking for something set further in the series. (This book is set after the show "emancipation") But out of sheer desperation to get my stargate fix, I decided to purchase this book. And WOW, it was great. The author got the characters just right. The story is wonderfull, full of action, adventure, suspense and the requisite evil goau'ld.

    I recomend this book highly

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2006-01-04

Sacrifice Moon, by Julie Fortune, is, hands down, the best Stargate SG-1 book.

But more than that, it is a very good book on its own merits -- well written; good characterization; a very nice "team" feel. It is set very early in the series so the characters are getting to know each other, and we find out more about them. There is exploration, and first contact with an alien culture, but the mission turns dark quickly and the adventures start coming fast and furious as the tension mounts.

I strongly recommend this book. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars new planet, new enemy.......2007-08-02

When I first read this one it brought up a few questions such as whatever happened to that bounty-hunter that they had run into 4 years earlier and if there a few more enemies that they had never met. I think that if there were a few enemies in this one than it would have to be the bounty-hunter's sister, the goa'uld and that creature at the end of the story. But for Daniel you had to think that brought up one his own ambitions and that was to find some of his lost memories when he'd been gone during the previous season, but for O'neill, Carter and Teal'c this brought up their biggest fear and that was having their team-mate being turned in a goa'uld. I thought the story was really good nonetheless and I look forward to checking out the rest of them when I get the chance. Trust me, order this one, you won't be disappointed.

    2 out of 5 stars A bit different.......2007-06-05

I've been an SG-1 fan since it's inception way back when, and have read and seen a fair amount of material on the series. This book didn't quite ring true. The plot struggled through, and the ending was not quite right. The biggest issue that I had with this book was the characters. People read SG-1 fanfics to experience the exploits of the SG-1 TEAM, not Samantha Carter and her lackeys. Throughout the majority of the book, Jack, Daniel and Teal'c were portrayed predominantly as weaker than their usual selves (with the occasional spot on moods evoked seemingly more for continuity), while Carter comes across as the strong, stoic leader. While I enjoy stories with a strong female lead (i.e. Tomb Raider, political thrillers, historical thrillers, etc, etc), taking the rest of SG-1 so far out of character to strengthen the role of Samantha Carter just seems OFF. So, a meandering and struggling plot, characterization somewhat off base, and a lackluster ending all add up to the conclusion that I should have listened to my wife (another strong woman) and checked it out from the local library. At least that way you won't feel ripped off in the end.

3 out of 5 stars Liked this one least of all.......2007-05-17

Of all the Stargate SG-1 books, this is my least favorite. Didnt' flow right and felt like it was a strained effort. The actions of some of the main characters just didn't fit with the way you've come to know them from the TV series. Disappointing. Didn't like the way it was wrapped up either - not quite right.

    1 out of 5 stars Too great a price.......2007-09-02

My question is whether the author has ever seen the show? It sounds like she may have seen the movie since she says Daniel is blond, but other than having the names right, I'm not sure we're even talking about the same people. If you manage to make it through the holes and uneven development, then you'll probably be disappointed by the ending. Very rushed and unsatisfying. If I hadn't given one of the new authors a chance, I wouldn't have ever picked up another novelization.

3 out of 5 stars Little Bit of a let down.......2007-04-25

The book started off good and grabs you into the story, but then it ends up disappointing. The biggest issue I had with this book was the ending. It was too rushed. The pace of the book was good until 2/3rds of the way in - then it just rushed to finish the story. It was like the author was under an episode time limit and had to squeeze in the necessary criteria for an episode and follow it's time schedule. It left too many things unanswered.

I also didn't agree with some of the things the author did with the characters - having Daniel and Samantha inbibe in drinks just is out of character for Samantha. It's too easy to get carried away with the saracasm for O'Neill and the fact that Daniel walked away from Sha're is not believable in the least.

2 out of 5 stars not my type.......2006-11-11

i didnt enjoy this book, the general idea was good and tepical but there are big holes in the book that make you wonder. they did not chich if there is a dhd on the planet, they did not have radio comunications, they could not dial home but home suppose to call to know what was wrong, they made damege on that planet & and the locals may be punished by the gouald for their actions and all they did is to tell a kid to contact the nox enen the nox closed thier gate after their first engagment with sg1

5 out of 5 stars The best of Ashley McConnell's books I've read.......2005-03-17

Although it is obvious that this was written and set very early on in the series, which makes some of the details given seem slightly... off somehow, it is a very enjoyable book that I would recommend to anyone. I liked it better than the other two Ashley McConnell Stargate SG-1 books I have read. The story was interesting and although nothing truly surprising happened, it had enough twists to keep it quite engaging.

The characters were well handled. An admitted Jack O'Neill fan, I rather enjoyed all the little refrences and illusions to his past and of course his deftly portrayed wit. Daniel was well done as well, although he seemed a wee bit over-fixiated on Sha're to the exclusion of all else, but again, this is early SG-1, so that makes sense in a way. Otherwise his character was spot-on. Teal'c was also deftly handled which isn't easy to do as his character can oft be a writer's nightmare. :o) I will admit I'm not entirely sure that Sam Carter's character was portrayed to her full potential, but it was not greatly disrupting from the rest of the book.

All in all, I definitely recommend it as the best of Ashley McConnell's books.

    3 out of 5 stars A mixed review..........2003-06-30

Well I think the author has done a good job with the characters and the first few chapters, hooking the reader easily, the end of the book is wanting. First, the ending seems rushed, second she shifts the story away from the planet M'Kwethet and their homage to the Goa'uld to the fact that M'Kwethet's Stargate had no DHD and SG-1 has to find a way to get home. Like in 'The Morpheus Factor', a book set later in the series which I red first, the natives are left with their problems which may have been made even worse by SG-1's visit.
