Book Description

Test of Time is a captivating time-travel adventure that incorporates vocabulary words from the SAT and ACT, boldfacing them throughout the novel and providing definitions in a handy back-of-the book glossary. The result is a fun and effective study method for the thousands of diligent students who take these tests each year.

For Orlando Garcia Ortiz and his friends at prestigious Hadleyburg University, it's finals week. That same week, but many, many years before, a famously eccentric writer in Hartford, Connecticut, is putting the finishing touches on a manuscript about a rebellious boy named Huck. Suddenly, a bizarre thing happens: The manuscript disappears and in its place appears a strange contraption-a college student's laptop that has traveled through time. It's a mysterious set of circumstances, but our intrepid heroes at Hadleyburg, joined by Mark Twain, endeavor to retrieve their valued possessions and return to their proper places in time.

4 out of 5 stars Very good resource for SAT/ACT prep.......2007-01-03

My 12-year-old son read this book along with another vocabulary-building novel prior to taking the ACT for a regional talent search. He actually liked the story and was able to name and discuss new words from the text. I think this would be good for any test prep that requires vocabulary including the GRE. This is not a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable but disappointing ending.......2006-11-02

I am an SAT tutor and have found this book and others like it valuable to my students. Charles Harrington Elster is a master of his craft; unlike some other books of this type, his vocabulary and grammar are impeccable.* As a result, this book is very well written. What a great idea for a book-- Mark Twain in 21st century college America. Test of Time is informative and entertaining. Its ending is a bit sudden and far-fetched, though.
*Believe it or not, there are SAT vocab-building books that have poor definitions.

1 out of 5 stars DiaGnosis2012 review.......2007-02-18

The recent publication of The Ark of Millions of Years Volume Two sounded interesting, since the subtitle is 2012 and the Harvest of the End Times. The 331-page book has very poor quality graphics, many of which are blurred and pixelated images downloaded from the net with no acknowledgement to their origin. There is an acknowledgement of the author's cat, however - the book is dedicated to it! The authors, E.J. Clark and B. Alexander Agnew, Ph.D seem to see themselves as archaeologist-explorers in the vein of Indiana Jones, but their book shows that they have simply read a few New Age authors such as Arguelles, Yaxkin-Joy and/or Hunbatz Men, (or more likely, got the information second hand, off the internet), have misunderstood them, not done any proper research or checking and have mixed in the Nephilim of Sitchin and a large dose of biblical material. They even attribute the Tzolkin to Abraham or Shem (p.142). In fact it seems that the whole book is an attempt to prove and justify the bible (p.147-148). Their list of errors is huge. Here are a few:

1. Talking of Dreamspell's "galactic tones" and other concepts as if they are genuine artefacts of the Maya calendars (p.117-131)

2. Announce that Arguelles is deceased (p.120)

3. Show 2 Dreamspell Tzolkin grids and say one is the original design, while the other is modern (just because the former includes Maya numerals) p.121`-122.

4. Wrongly state that the Maya used wheels to measure time, since many people use interlocking wheels to help explain Maya calendars. (p.129-131).

5. They call the 52-year Calendar Round and 104-year Venus Round the "short count". The Short Count is actually a 13-katun cycle of just under 260 solar years (260 tuns). (p.132)

6. They state that the Maya had a 28-day lunar cycle. (p.132). The cycle was in fact alternately 29 and 30 days, with extra interpolated 30-day months.

7. They state that "The Tzolk'in (pronounced Zol Keen) is the divine or religious long count calendar of the Maya used to measure the cycles of the Pleiades, a cycle being 26,000 years." (p.132 and also p.141). The Tzolkin is NOT the Long Count, and the rest is an over-simplification - the movement of the Pleiades was used to check the precessional movement towards the alignment in 2012, (by the Maya of Chichen Itza), which only happens every 26,000 years.

8. Another misunderstanding: "The Tzolk'in calendar ends on December 21, 2012, at precisely 11.11.am GMT". (p.143). No, it is the 13-baktun cycle of the Long Count calendar that ends on 21 December 2012, but not at 11.11. That is when the Winter Solstice occurs. It is debateable amongst Mayanists as to when the date rolls over - either dusk, dawn, or midnight.

8. They state that the Haab is the Calendar Round. (p.135)

9. Mixed start and end-dates: start date: Aug 13 3114 BC (p.136) end-date: 23 December 2012 (p.139), buit also talks of Galactic Alignment, (p.136), which is applicable only if the other correlation is used - start date 11 August 3114 BC; end-date 21 December 2012. On p.153, both dates are given, "December 21-23") showing the authors' confusion.

10. "The Aztecs used a sacred calendar called the Tonalpohualli, a long count calendar borrowed from the Mayan Tzolk'in system with some modifications added." The Tzolkin (and Tonalpohualli) ARE NOT the same as the Long Count!

11. The central panel of the Aztec Sunstone is presented as the entire Sunstone. The reason is that it was copied from the internet, and only the central panel of the colour rendition by Roberto Sieck Flandes can be found online. If you want to see the whole painting, see Beyond 2012 colour plates.

12. Galactic Alignment is stated to be "the winding down of precession". Galactic Alignment is a 36-year time window in the 26,000-year cycle of precession - not the end of it.

There are many more errors, but I'm sure you get the gist of this. This book is actually an insult to the intelligence!

I have to chime in. It is quite obvious to me that Mr. McNaughton has reviewed the wrong book. This book, The Ark of Millions of Years, Volume TWO, which I own, is all about the 2012 Mayan End Time date. Because the authors are the first to "crack" the 2012 Mayan calendar code meaning in a very unique way, I rate this book highly.

Now, I believe that Mr. McNaughton is referring to the Volume One of The Ark of Millions of Years. He mentions several books that are not even in the authors reference list. Regardless, the questions that he raises were indeed answered in that book, in fact every one of them.

The authors bring to the table a new version of the creation as told through many ancient reliable texts, including the Bible, that answers the questions about the flood of Noah, origin of the Jews, whether man was created or evolved, the true age of the earth, the role of the fallen angels, and much more in a new light from ancient Jewish texts recently translated.

The authors make the claim that it is the most comprehensive book on the creation; and they did it admirably, in a most remarkable way. They also claim the book restores a key piece of knowledge that was lost about 6,000 years ago pertaining to the understanding of the creation; this loss caused the chasm between creationists and evolutionists. Additionally, the book actually fulfills an ancient Jewish prophecy found in the Zohar and its publishing was heralded by a Grand Sextile (Star of David) alignment of heavenly bodies announcing the return of the lost "key." I love this book, have read it twice, and highly recommend it to others.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully-Written and Insightful Book.......2005-05-30

I have long been interested in the use of plants by various cultures around the world, and it was this fascination that led me to Harvest McCampbell's wonderful book.
Sacred Smoke details the sacred practice of smudging, the ceremonial burning of aromatic herbs by many Native American tribes.

The book offers detailed information on eighteen plants: Balsam Fir, Bayberry, California Bay, cedar, Desert Sage, Epazote, Fennel, Hemlock, Juniper. Mint, Mullein, Mugwort, Pine, Spruce, Sweet Grass, Uva Ursi, Wild Tobacco and Yerba Santa. Information includes cultural uses, growing tips, a list of nurseries where plants may be obtained, and even an extensive listing of related web links. The information is detailed and very well organized.

However, it is the personal accounts by the author that makes this book so special. I particularly loved the section on suffering. She writes of embracing suffering instead of trying to rise above it: "The mosquito suffers in the dragonfly's jaws so that there will always be dragonflies. The dragonfly suffers in the little bird's beak so there will always be little birds. The little bird suffers in the hawk's talons so there will always be hawks. I suffer the bite of the mosquito, so there will always be dragonflies, little birds and hawks."

In short, this is a beautifully-written, insightful book that deserves a space on every nature lover's bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars A deeply respectful accounting.......2003-06-17

Sacred Smoke: The Ancient Art Of Smudging For Modern Times by Harvest McCampbell (who began her studies of herbs, smudging, and ritual with her Iroquois Onondaga Oswegatchie grandmother) is an informative and informed, step-by-step, "user friendly" guide to the spiritual practice of burning herbs, as undertaken by Native Americans for generations. A deeply respectful accounting of this enlightening and meditative practice, Sacred Smoke is a unique and enthusiastically recommended contribution to Native Am-erican Studies reference collections and Metaphysical Studies reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for for beginners AND experienced herbalists.......2002-11-08

Recently, amazon.com delivered to my door a very wonderful book... Sacred Smoke by Harvest McCampbell is a primer and reference text regarding how to identify, collect, and even grow a wide range of sacred plants used for smudging. In her book, Harvest has succeeded in writing of sacred things without "crossing the line." She totally avoids being cloaked in shadowy mysticism and strives to communicate facts which can then be applied to one's own traditions and teachings.

I found this book to be valuable on two levels... As an "evening's read" I felt like Harvest was sitting next to me having a conversation about her grandmother and the wisdom she passed on regarding sacred plants. As a reference work, I found Sacred Smoke to be filled with well documented herbal facts and sources that are organized for easy reference.

One of the difficulties any author faces with works of this type is how to impart knowledge on paper that can really only be learned through experience. Harvest succeeds marvelously in this by introducing concepts, then directing the reader to other sources for further research - including the internet - all the while continually reminding us to seek out our own elders and find our own traditions.

In short, Harvest has crafted a book that should be of great interest both to beginning students and experienced herbalists.

It's been a long time since I've found a book I was so happy to have in my library for many years to come!

5 out of 5 stars Smudging 101.......2002-04-15

All that you need to know about the art of smudging (purification with sacred plants and fire) is contained within the pages of this well-written, informative, and interesting book. One of the most highly respected and nationally known Native American herbalists today, Harvest began her training at the knee of her Native grandmother. She has been healing and educating others for over 20 years, and few herbalists today can claim the scope of knowledge that she possesses. Harvest wrote this greatly expanded second edition of her popular first self-published work from the seclusion of her home in a small northern California native community. As an herbalist and an educator, Harvest is unsurpassed in her knowledge and skills as well as her ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. If you buy one book about herbs this summer, let it be Sacred Smoke.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Look at the Last Days of a Wonderful Man.......2007-09-13

I did not know exactly what to expect with this book. I had finished From Sawdust to Stardust: The Biography of DeForest Kelley, Star Trek's Dr. McCoy (Star Trek) (which I enjoyed very much) and was interested in learning more about De, and happened upon "A Harvest of Memories" which seemed to be just what I was looking for. It turned out to be very different from what I had expected - unlike so many other books like it, this book provided a very intimate and personal look at DeForest Kelley in a way that I found surprising, refreshing, sad, and real. The later half of the book provides an uncensored look at the last days of De, right down to the nitty gritty reality of being so ill you can not do anything for yourself; not even take a bath or use the bathroom. To some who have had experiences with loved ones passing over the course of long illnesses that render them physically weak and reliant upon others, I should warn you that this book will bring those memories back to you in a strong way. If you can endure, though, the reward is something you'll never get otherwise; a chance to feel as if you truly knew DeForest Kelley. Not the actor, not the celebrity, not Doctor McCoy - but De, the wonderful, kind, gentle, man. I am fortunate to have met, via conventions, almost every member of every cast of every Star Trek series both regular and recurring. Yet with De, I never had the opportunity; I became a Star Trek fan only in 1996, attended by first real convention in 1998, and De was gone in the summer of 1999. This book made me feel as if I finally did get to meet him - more, really. It made me feel as if I was lucky enough to know him.

5 out of 5 stars Being Led Along a Unique Path..........2007-04-25

It has taken me nearly 8 years to come to the point where I could bring myself to read about the life of DeForest Kelley, who was so dear to me. As, I'm sure, with most readers of A Harvest of Memories, I was moved to tears very often by the touching narrative. It is the story of Kris Smith's devotion to a great man and his message. Because we learn of his very nature, which made him stand out from the crowd, NO ONE who has read this book could ever say, "I can't see DeForest for de trees!"

Living day to day through Kris's extraordinary experience, encourages all of us to try to do the "De-thing" and I hope that, when it is my turn, I can bow out of this life with even a fraction of the grace and heart that De showed all through his life.

Though I have come to learn De's story rather late after his passing, I shall not forget it. Kris Smith was in a unique position to mesh the details of her own life and those of the Kelleys into a seamless, heartfelt and heartbreaking odyssey. The reader is guided gently by a very special person with very special memories!

5 out of 5 stars Deforest Kelley: A Harvest of Memories.......2007-01-19

I found this book to be a very good read. I didn't expect anything but the authors memoir about the time she spent with the Kelleys. I was touched by the way she voluntarily helped people who needed her. I haven't been in that situation yet, but I know people who have and have seen first hand the toll it takes on a caregiver.

1 out of 5 stars DeForest Kelley: A Harvest Of Memories.......2006-12-27

As one reviewer proclaimed that this was Kristine's life and times. This fiction was incredible in showing her delusions and fanatical insight toward a very, very private man. It is not recommended reading for those who respect DeForest Kelley. My condolences to Carolyn Kelley who had to put up with this nonsense.

      5 out of 5 stars Touching story.......2006-11-15

Kristine's memories of DeForest Kelley was especially meaningful for me especially the last part where she served as his caregiver. I recently did the same for my father while my mother was ill at the same time. It takes a special sort of person to do what Kristine did for the Kelly's. For fans of the cast of the original Star Trek series this is a must read. It shows an honest look at what fandom can be and what a fine person DeForest Kelly was.

The Four Seasons of Italian Cooking is a handsome reminder of the simplicity and splendor of rustic Italian food. To demonstrate the regional nature of Italian cooking, A.J. Battifarano traveled around Italy and met with fascinating characters in Tuscany, Umbria, the Piedmont, Lombardy, Campania, and Apulia. In each region, we learn the story of families and individuals involved in the food industry, perhaps as a farmer or as the owner of an inn or restaurant. Meet Franco and Esther Carnero, a couple who restored an old house in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, developed a vineyard and garden, and then opened a small inn, La Luna e i Falo, or the Moon and the Bonfires. Here Esther serves dishes based on old, local recipes (which she shares with us), including roast veal accompanied by a sweet red pepper and fig sauce, and a hazelnut cake made with the locally grown crop of nuts. Throughout this Italian adventure, we are introduced to satisfying, yet simple to prepare, dishes. Misticanza is a splendid example--a dish of dark leafy greens, just boiled and simply dressed with extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon juice. In addition to 125 charming recipes, and personal narratives, Battifarano also presents expert advice for storing and preparing fruits and vegetables from the four seasons. In true Italian fashion, it is the flavor of each ingredient that matters. This means the freshest ingredients are required for reproducing the profoundly satisfying flavors of Italy's farmhouse cooking. --Dana Jacobi

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing book.......2007-08-22

As Catalans we love cooking and (specially) eating. This book is just the perfect balance between exquisite recipes, excellent presentation and informative reading. Do not miss the chance to get it

5 out of 5 stars Authentic and Outstanding.......2003-09-28

I just returned from a lovely stay at La Luna e i Falo, and enjoyed six nights of impeccable meals prepared by Elena and Franco. Our meals included all of the recipes from this cookbook, and I must say, not one of them disappointed! I was able to read this cookbook while at the farm, and made a note to immediately try to find it when I returned home. Amazon is the only place to get it, since it is now out of print. It was only released in America, so you can't even find an Italian version of the book. The other recipes from other cooks featured in the book look equally as good. You can't get more authentic, regional recipes than those that are found here. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Most unusual Italian cookbook AND travellog.......1999-08-12

I love this book. It is the most unusual cookbook.I have travelled the Italian Countryside many times and this book reflects much of its uniqueness. I bought four copies for friends.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on really authentic Italian cooking.......1998-11-30

In this world inundated with tomes devoted to Italian cooking, this wonderful book stands out. The author spent years researching, collecting and testing authentic, seasonal farmhouse recipes (from all over the country) made with only the freshest ingredients. (The recipes are full-proof!!) This is one of the few books that allows everyone to make some of the most appetizing Italian dishes--just as the Italians do. Everything is explained in detail--from ingredients to techniques to customs to mail-order sources--in one of the most complete books ever written on the subject. And if this weren't enough, the flavor of the food is beautifully captured in some of the most exquisite photographs ever taken of Italy and its food. This book is a MUST for anyone who likes to cook and/or eat the most mouth-watering Italian cuisine!!

5 out of 5 stars a terrific cookbook, travel book and picture book all in one.......1998-11-19

This is a great Italian cookbook, very different from most of the cookbooks you see. Not only does it have great recipes but it also tells great stories about all the various farms the authors visit. And it also tells you how you can visit the farms yourself. The pictures in particular are very interesting. They are not the usual slick shots. It seems like they were all done on location and they have a feel of food photo-journalism. This book has great recipes and great heart and soul.

      2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed............2006-04-24

I recently purchased "Peter in Blueberry Land" by Elsa Beskow for my 4 year old son and he absolutely loved it, as did I. I decided to try another book and chose this one. I was incredibly disappointed and found it to have very hierarchical and negative undertones. It was also a very long, drawn out story. My very active boy grew bored with it after the first page, as it was hard for him to follow. I was actually quite happy with this, as I had not read it before showing it to my son (I normally do, but HE was the one who excitedly found the amazon box on our front porch and after reading Peter in Blueberry Land I assumed this book would be equally as wonderful. Lesson learned). My mommy instincts kicked in with my overall feeling of the book as I read. I will definitely be sending this one back. This will not deter me from trying different Elsa Beskow books, but as far as this story goes I do not want my son learning he is better than anyone and can talk down to other people. This is what I came away with after reading this story. In the interest of fairness I must add that I am very picky about what my son can and can't read.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready to read it over and over........2003-03-25

My son, and now my daughter, 2 1/2 love this book. There is such a magical quality to the illustrations and writings. It has a relaxing quality that is just right for bedtime reading. This is one of Elsa Beskow's best!

      3 out of 5 stars A Time of death.......2005-03-03

This volume, A Time of death, poses a significant problem of determining exactly how to evaluate it. If read simply as a novel, based around real events, but using these as not significantly more than the basis of a story line, then the book is very good - and of course well writen. It is only if you move past that approach, and see the book (and I talk only about this one volume - part 2 I think - as i have not read the others yet) as having a more real historical validity - as history, rather than a novel based on a historical story - that evaluation becomes harder.

Its a deeply troubling problem, as most of the other reviews here tend to treat the book as objective history, which it is not, although it is based on real events, and with very good histroical research underlying its main story line. The best way to describe the problem with the book - and its maybe more a problem with our approach to reading it - can be seen in the subject of betrayal. The characters talk alot about what they see as betrayal, and if the author is using this to express a general feeling in Serbia during the period covered by the book, then this is fine - in fact necessary to give the book a better historical flavour. It is when we move past this understanding, to seeing the notions of betrayal in the book as REAL historical fact, and correct iinterpretation, that problems start.

Did the author intend us to do this, or simply leave it as an expression of the feeling during that time? I do not know the answer to this, yet, but the historical truth of the issues which are assumed to be evaluated as betrayal is at least highly questionable (and of course the underlying notion that Serbia was totally innocent of starting WW1 also highly questionable), and the desire to focus so much on this deeply worrying.

Enjoy the novel(s) and even use them to become interested in Serbia and the period, but do not rely on them as history. Just like films of historical figures should not be seen as historical truth, neither should this book.

      5 out of 5 stars must read.......2001-08-19

Searing, visceral stuff - the story of betrayal upon betrayal, and of how a nation was ground into dust and doggedly refused to stay there. The Serbian retreat across the winter mountains, under pressure from three separate war fronts and abandoned by those they believed were their allies, is a tragic and epic one. Here are some of the very deepest roots of the history of the embattled Balkans. A must-read.

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2000-07-07

EXCELLENT! This book was written perfectly to the letter. It is a combination of four of his earlier masterpieces put together. I do not suggest buying this book if you don't like perfectly written books. There is not enough time or words to describe this masterpiece.

      5 out of 5 stars Warning!.......1999-07-16

After having read the very only comment on your site regarding 'A Time of Death', in which a reader complained about the translation, and also expressed difficulty to understand what was going on, I decided to write a little comment in order to encourage people to go ahead and read Cosic's work. What you must bear in mind, though, is that Dobrica Cosic has been writing all his life one continuous story, one novel. Although it is not impossible to read any one of them singled out, or read them in any order, and get some reading pleasure, I should think it is best to read them in the correct order so that you can follow the characters and their life in a chronological order. I cannot be of a lot of help with titles in English, since I read Cosic in the original language, , but I can tell you that it is best to start with 'A Time of Death', continue with 'Reach to eternity', and finish with 'South to destiny', which would be the end of reading about the Serbian tragedy in the period of the WWI. Then Cosic continues with another irresistable trilogy called in original 'A Time of Evil' (Vreme Zla), but I am not sure of its English title in translation, which follows the same characters through the period in between the WWI and WWII. The latest published book from the same story stream iz the first book from the forthcoming trilogy called 'Vreme Vlasti' (literally translated 'A Time of Reign'), which is the one I am after at the moment. The amount of reading seems overwhelming, but don't be put off. I remember reading one of the books with 500 pages in one night, and kicking myself the following morning for spoiling the pleasure of reading it for longer period of time. As a writer, Cosic is realistic, he can be cruel, he can also be helplessly romantic, he can make you laugh and cry because you always end up falling in love with at least one of his characters. I met a young man once who told that he thought of naming his future daughter after one of 'A Time of Death' female characters, which I thought was very funny, since I was already convinced by then, I was going to name one of my future sons after one of the male characters from the same novel. You don't easily forget those lives and the meaning of their universal love, hate, pleasure and pain. Cosic is also very well historically informed, and I cannot think of an easier way to learn about history of that time. I hope you enjoy the reading, and when you meet Bogdan, tell him I still think of him sometime.
