    Book Description

The national bestselling author takes a departure from his epic science fiction to craft this cross between Len Deighton-style espionage and H.P. Lovecraftian horror.

Bob Howard is a computer-hacker desk jockey, who has more than enough trouble keeping up with the endless paperwork he has to do on a daily basis. He should never be called on to do anything remotely heroic.

    Download Description

In the title piece, Alan Turing, the father of modern computer science, completes his theorem on "Phase Conjugate Grammars for Extra-dimensional Summoning." Turing's work paves the way for esoteric mathematical computations that, when carried out, have side effects that leak through a channel underlying the structure of the Cosmos. Out there in the multiverse are "listeners" who can sometimes be coerced into opening gates. In 1945, Nazi Germany's Ahnenerbe-SS, in an attempt to escape the Allied onslaught, performs just such a summoning on the souls of more than six million. A gate opens to an alternate universe through which the SS move people and material-to live to fight another day. But their summoning brings forth more than the SS have bargained for-an evil, patiently waiting all this time while learning the ways of humans, now poises to lunch on Earth. Secret intelligence agencies, esoteric theorems, Lovecraftian horrors, Middle East terrorist connections, a damsel in distress, and a final battle on the surface of a dying planet round out this story.

This book was ok, but it wasn't as exciting as i thought it would be. Maybe because there were new authors that were just starting out. Some of the short stories were good, but overall, keep ya money folks!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Reading!.......2006-06-26

Concrete Jungle is compilation of stories that are well-written, interesting and real. Shannon Holmes is but one of the authors that have contributed to the book. Love, lust, lies... street life and hard truths... Concrete Jungle's got it! The best thing about this book is the variety of writing styles, ideas and energy. I couldn't put it down!

5 out of 5 stars A tapestry of urban life in America..........2005-12-31

In cities throughout the United States, an individual street culture exists known as the Concrete Jungle; not the traditional jungle with animals. It is not located on the African or South American continents. No! The urban jungle which lives in American cities. This collection of short-stories explores life in the Concrete Jungle.

The stories are heart-warming, funny and real and share the day to day exploration of what it is to live life in this place. This anthology displays a list of talented writers which include Shannon Holmes and Anthony Whyte. Many of the writers are not names that are recognizable yet, but they will be. The stories are fast and free flowing, each one displays the unique voices that brightly shine from the first to last story.

To paraphrase Lene, the Concrete Jungle has billions of stories, some are true and others half truths but everyone has a story to tell. The CONCRETE JUNGLE starts off with an explosive introduction. Shakespeare is quoted in the introduction; "The world is a stage and everyone is a player". Those are definitely prophetic words for the upcoming short-stories. From the young girl who thinks she can out-smart and out-hustle to get on top of the drug game, to the white grocery boy who becomes the hottest "black" player on campus. Or, maybe the cut-throat and ambitious femme-fatale who connives her way to the top of corporate America. Or the ruthless and violent stick-up man who learns that what goes around-comes around. Each character is vastly different but all share one thing in common: living life in the Concrete Jungle.

If read consecutively, back to front or sporadically, CONCRETE JUNGLE is a compilation of short-stories that grabs the reader's attention. Each story stands on its own uniqueness. All are free-flowing and well-written. The introductory prose sets the tone, and its lyrics grabs the reader's attention and sets the mood for what is to follow. Holmes, Whyte, and Rivers, are masters of urban literature. Each share their style and talent as contributors on this project. The anthology also brings together new, exciting voices of urban fiction. I was amazed at how the stories just drew me in. I'm not going to say that I read each story one after another. I read them out of order and that's what was the amazing part. The diversity, the range of talent, and the various perceptions set the stage for each writer's voice to be heard. The collection of lives is an interwoven tapestry. That's The beauty of CONCRETE JUNGLE.

I have to say, I had to read a short story collection for my English class, I picked this one because I wanted something more modern, current and relevant. I got that and a lot more! I started reading various stories, not in order and I found out that this collection is full of Black protagonists. I didn't know the others but I was aware of the book, but having a collection like this is rare, all truly moving and touching...except...the structural errors that occurred throughout all the stories, there were strange indents, strange comma uses, it was quite hard to read. I just noticed these things, they didn't hinder the story or ruin the stories in anyway, just made them a little difficult to read. I don't know if it was part of the story or just poorly edited, its one of those things I think people should be aware of.
On brighter note, this is a very highly entertaining, mind-opening and touching collection of stories, I truly must buy for all those short story enthusiasts!

on a whim some time last year i picked up issue #1 of the apparently new series by the title of Elephantmen. i was at once enthralled by a dark, mysterious, bladerunner-esque pulp-laden world of the future, full of mercenaries, monsters and a sense of nightmarish magic. the art drew me in, and refused to let me go.
i fervently searched for any and all traces of prior work, and then found a notification for the release of hip flask; concrete jungle.
let me once again say... wow. absolutely amazing. the art, the words, the characters, the sense of wonder and horror that strikes you all at once. even if you've never read a Starkings story before, the beautiful art work by ladronn will draw you in long enough fir the words to hook you completely.
in case you hadn't noticed, i am smitten with hip, and hope to see more of his adventures in a world gone horribly wrong.

    5 out of 5 stars Predator: Concrete Jungle - A great read!.......2005-10-21

Well, I just finished this book, and man was it a page turner! From the beginning to the end, it was action, with Detective Schaefer and Detective Raesche going up against the deadly hunters, and managing to take out more than Arnold did in the first movie. From what I understand, this story was originally set to be the sequel to the first Predator movie, but was rewritten into the Predator 2 that we all know, due to Schwarznegger's scheduling conflicts. Too bad, because it would've made a great movie. Nevertheless, with the character of Schaefer rewritten into Schwarznegger's brother, it becomes a personal quest for the protagonist to teach the Predators a lesson as a large safari group of them hunt through the streets of New York City.

Yes, I did notice the similarities between the book and the movie Predator 2, but so what? I enjoyed both and so should you. Besides, the timeline makes both the book and movie feasible. The book takes place 8 years after the original "Predator", while "Predator 2" takes place 10 years later.

    Enjoy the book, I did!

4 out of 5 stars Predator part 1.5.......2005-10-07

This is the novelization of the graphic novel put forth by Dark Horse comics which is great in its own right. This book is a nicely done translation to written words although the writing style is a little screenwriter-ish rather than a book author. It's a fast read and will be enjoyed by fans of Predator. Your dealing with Dutch's (Schwarzenegger) brother in his job as a police detective. As another reviewer pointed out, this is what Predator 2 was supposed to be. Drug war, predators, and Dutch with the police. Could easily be translated into Predator 3 for a blow 'em up action movie, probably starring Dolph Lundgren as Schaefer (yeah I know Dolph's acting is less than stellar but so is Arnie's). The book itself, if you're a fan, you'll love it; if your not, you should still enjoy it but keep in mind it is an action book with no plot.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2005-03-14

I love both species and anything to do with them. If your over the age of nine don't waste your money. I was let down to say the least. There are MANY burger stands that have burgers needing to be turned. Nathan Archer should try that line of work. He sure can't write. Hope the other two novels in the series are better then this one. ( I got them all at once. )
I hate to be negative, but this was a great story, just poorly told. Think of a five year old trying to tell you Hamlet. For shame Mr. Archer.

    4 out of 5 stars Predator:concrete Jungle.......2005-01-11

Over the years I have been interested in reading the "Alien/Predator" novels. Just recently over Winter Break I picked up a new book called "Predator, Concrete Jungle" this book is nothing less then amazing, I never really goy bored when i am reading this book. The Storyis about a New your police offer named Shaefer who has just recently just started encountering very strange murders in the big Apple, After Shaefer's encounters with a creature(predator) he has grown attached to finding out what is going on.
This book was almost like watching a movie to me I was so into it I didn't even pay attention to the time around me. I really enjoyed how detailed the author was in this book, iy kinda made me seem like I was there.
The charactors in the story where really planned out to fit just perfectly in the story. One of the things that I didn't like about the story was how sometimes a few not all of the charactors would act very sensless wich I don't think an average personwould do.
New york City was the perfect setting for this story in my opinion. New York was perfect because of the whole attitude the people have and all the taxis that got destroyed and the battle scenes that took place in grand central station and in the subway tunnels.
Overall I really recommend this book, but in order to enjoy these type of boks you have to be into the whole science fiction vibe. This book contains a lot of "gore" and if you have a week stomache don't read it. In the other hand if you like suspense and action Please read this book!

4 out of 5 stars A PREDATOR BREEZE READ THAT IS EXCITING!.......2004-10-25

Nathan Archer does an outstanding job writing this Predator adventure. If only the movies would put this much into it!
Archer has a good knack for cutting through the crap and giving the reader a fun, fast, exciting read.

Nathan archer is the best author in the world! I have read both cold war and concrete jungle and they are the best books i have ever read. I recomend Nathan Archer to all you predator lovers. I just hope he writes another predator novel with shaefer and rasche in it. If you havn't read this book, do so now, trust me! Also if you are interested in Predator Email me!

4 out of 5 stars An action packed story..........1999-06-16

A good idea to put Dutch's brother against the predators! This book has a lot of action and I liked that, but the action is not very realistic in some parts. Like when Schaefer manaced to run a long way to a predator and kill him with a metal pipe, and the predator just stood there?! But the plot is quite good and pictures are well drawn. But that is the only bad part in this one. This is the first predator only book I've read, and I am going to keep buing them 'cause this was so cool!

5 out of 5 stars Unusual but Awesome!.......2007-10-08

A little about me: I never take anything I read as gospel. I am not a "pagan" and I do not identify myself with any particular path. I'm a wandering mystic. I just kind of read everything and take what rings truth in me and assimilate it into my personal belief structure.

This book fills a very real need in mystical literature for people like me. I am the sort of person who generally prefers cities over the country (although I do enjoy returning to nature occasionally) and so it is hard for me to connect with very nature oriented pagan literature. When you spend most of your days walking around a city, full of concrete, alley ways, faces, and buildings you don't often run into a babbling brook, or a natural clearing of trees, or a patch of clover. It's just a different world and Raven Kaldera expertly shows that spirituality can be found anywhere, even in a dirty alleyway when Skram whispers in your ear and you notice a shadowy figure a ways away and suddenly feel you should be elsewhere. Why can't cockroaches and squirrels and pigeons be totem animals? Some of my friends respect this book merely due to how perfectly his description of the squirel totem person fits me. LOL

This is not for the average tree-hugging dirt worshiping hippie nature child pagan. This is for those of us who just march to the beat of our own drummer and find spirituality EVERYWHERE we go, not just in the places you'd expect to find it.

Give this book a chance. Seriously. This guy has some fantastic ideas even if you don't adopt his beliefs in rote.

    4 out of 5 stars I am a modern Satanist........2006-12-18

After reading this book I have found that much of the content applies to ideas such a the ones expressed in the Satanic Bible. If you do not know, Modern LaVeyan Satanism originated from Paganism so there is definatly major similarities. I enjoyed this book and thought it was a good read especially for a Modern Satanist. I am eager to start combining the 2 religions with this book. I have conducted many rituals involving transfer of energy for ones good fortune and have been successful everytime so these are some new ideas that I am willing to try. By the way this is not only for people living in big cities like new york, it has instructions on what to do in place more rural outside the city limits as well.

4 out of 5 stars A little cheesy, but overall good.......2006-11-10

I snapped this book up because it looked like just the sort of book for me: adapting to life outside the woods and learning to practice witchcraft in my apartment instead of expansive backyard. I was pleased with the amount of useful information, such as affordable herbs and materials for spellwork. I was also fascinated by the chart on the magical significance of piercings.

Like any book on witchcraft, though, Urban Primitive isn't without its fair share of cheese. The Urban Triple Goddess and God kind of threw me for a loop, as did their continuous praise of trashpicking. Pagans already get a bad rap as it is; we don't need to add "dumpster divers" to our reputation!

If you ignore the goofy bits, though, this book is really useful. It gives advice on the practical things in life: finding and keeping a job/apartment/car/etc, protection from the chaotic energy of a populous city, even working around roommates and close neighbors. Definitely a good investment for your pagan reading collection - just remember to take some of it with a grain of salt.

1 out of 5 stars Love the cover art, loathe the content..........2006-11-08

I am one of those fortunate Pagans who is blessed to live in a more natural setting than I used to, but having lived in the city, I did at least expect some creative insight from this book. And was most sadly disappointed.

The perspective on the Goddess leaves much to be desired. Referring to her three aspects as 'Squat, Skor & Scram' is not only gaggingly juvenile, it's completely disrespectful. The God's aspects are similarly insulted as they have been renamed, 'Slick, Screw and Sarge'.

I'm leaning toward more Traditional Witchcraft these days, but I'm always interesting in learning about a new perspective and do enjoy the diversity of the different Pagan traditions. Also, the cover art for this book really makes an impression. Unfortunately, the content does not fulfill the promise of perspective implied by the cover. Yes, there are sections about piercings, tattoos and other modern/urban activities, but the actual practice (using the term loosely, of course), seems empty and - for lack of a better term - FLUFFY. Like another reviewer, I wondered if some of the content was meant to be taken as humor. It came off as more 'bad joke' than good witchcraft. Humor as written by a 15 year old dull-normal.

Then there's the altar set-up with the toy car...oy vey. To place a replica of one's car on the altar for protection energy is a great idea, but to also put gasoline, antifreeze, etc. is lame and completely dangerous, especially considering that candles and incense are also placed there.

In order for Pagans to practice a nature religion in an urban setting we do not need to resort to fluff like this. It insults the Goddess & God and cheapens (and could quite possibly damage) our environment(s). I'd suggest instead finding a nice quiet grassy area in which to sit and meditate or setting up a small indoor garden. Even a jog through the park can be a natural, spiritual and uplifting experience. There are lots of ways to commune with nature in an urban setting. Challenge yourself to find your own unique path and style.

Save your money. Even at a discount this book is overpriced.

4 out of 5 stars Good for city dwelling solitaires.......2006-10-07

Someone commented that you can't just make up dieties. Our ancestors made up their deities to explain their world. If they lived in concrete jungles like we do, who's to say they wouldn't have worshiped Skor. We all worship who ever and in what ever way makes sense and feels right to us. This book helped me connect to the spiritual a lot more than the high ceremonial structured rituals of Buckland. Yeah the names of the triple dieties are a little strange and perhaps the offerings are not quite what the Covenant of the Goddess would find "appropriate" but not all of us have access to the right herbs or robes or chalices. Some of us need reminders that it doesn't matter what we use to practice our magic, it's in the intention.

This book is written by real people, living in the real world, working real magic. And as a witch living in the city, I can relate much more to this than just about any other. Scott Cunningham even said it doesn't matter what tools you use, a butter knife can make an excellent athame. Tannin & Raven are just following that philosophy. Anyone who thinks this is silly should get off their moral high horse and "practice what they preach".

An it harm none, do what you will.

      4 out of 5 stars RPG.......2007-09-03

A character book that is for the hodgepodge of heroes and villains based around New York. Which in Marvel is most of them, but looking at the non-famous teams, mostly.

5 out of 5 stars Their rainforest is ours.......2000-05-23

Dion, Rockman, and Ross show us what is in front of most of us, the dwellers of the urban landscape, in a way we all might like to think about looking at the world. This is a great, thought-provoking book which is a must for every rural and urban school, city, and town library around the globe. If hundreds of curious people pick it up to buy and read, and give it some consideration, all the better. I loved it. - Loren Coleman

      5 out of 5 stars Urban life..........2000-04-08

A great book, with a general overview of the urban dwellers and the habitat they transform by interactions beetween species, space, history and the human perpective of the life in the cities.

Its real achivement is the explorations in to urban ecosystems, with an accesible language for everyone.
