Book Description

Violence racks Cinnabar. The fleets of the tyrannical Alliance are on the move, and at home class riots threaten to rip apart not only society but the Republic of Cinnabar Navy. Lt. Daniel Leary has earned promotion, but the needs of the Republic and the RCN require that he serve under an officer whose paranoia has already led him to execute crewmen out of hand. Signals Officer Adele Mundy has repeatedly proved her skills and loyalty as Cinnabar's most accomplished intelligence agent, but now elements within the Republic want to draw her into a conspiracy like the one that led to her parent's massacre. Leary and Mundy battle their way from riot-torn streets to spies in an outlying base and an anarchic planet where violence is the only law, but if they succeed at every stage, one test still remains: a space battle against an overwhelming Alliance force. Even for Daniel Leary it will be a difficult fight to win-and almost impossible to survive.

4 out of 5 stars thank goodness.......2007-09-26

Thank goodness David Drake returns to his true writing form. The last Lt. Leary book, Far Side of the Stars, was terrible. This book returns to the characters and A REAL PLOT. I enjoyed it and will buy the next, and the next and the next.....

5 out of 5 stars David Drake shows his talent yet again........2007-08-28

First, I must admit I really like Mr. Drake's books. Fast paced, just the right amount of character development (not too much, not too little), etc.

That said, this Lt. Leary series has turned out to be most pleasant to read. Unlike some, dare I say, "matured" authors, Mr. Drake has improved his story telling without deviating from his basic style. Read through the Hammer's Slammers books and and then this series; I think you'll see the increase in expansion of style without going off on some unexpected tangent. I am not saying the two series are closely akin, though.

For some reason, I equate the Lt. Leary series to Mr. Weber's Honor Harrington series (and may the the Lt. continue for as many books) and Mrs. Bujold's Vorkosagan Saga. A strange coupling, but there. Good reads all.

5 out of 5 stars A fine political scenario........2007-08-04

David Drake's THE WAY TO GLORY tells of one Lt. Daniel Leary who also has problems with politics when a paranoid officer above him begins to execute those who are out of hand. Add a conspiracy, spies and anarchy and you have a fine political scenario.

4 out of 5 stars Lt. Leary rides again.......2007-07-04

This is another book in the Lt. Leary series by David Drake. If you like military science fiction with a few wrinkles, you will like this. It is reasonably standard fare except for the female lead and her bodyguard. Both of them are stone killers but in different mindsets. This series is worth reading just to try to figure these two smoking shooters out.

5 out of 5 stars Drake in his groove.......2007-06-27

More of the great stuff from Drake. Subtle as a hammer. But sometimes a hammer is what you need. The books in this series get read in one sitting.

Book Description

Anxiety and depression are epidemics in our society today. I believe that we have fallen into a trap by choosing to use medication as a means of combating these issues. They, in my opinion, are problems with solutions, rather than diseases or disorders that need to be medicated. There are many dangers that hide behind these so-called remedies that society has so readily embraced. I am writing to expose them and to take a firm stand against them; and to offer the one, absolutely certain answer...God Himself. Whether you are already a believer in Christ, or don't know Him, I am sure this message can serve to free you from the bondage you may be in. My deep desire is that you would open your heart to hear the most important and glorious truth that was ever spoken to us through God's Word; and that is this: Christ Jesus CAN and WILL deliver you! This is my family's story of our walk through deep darkness into His amazing light.

5 out of 5 stars From the Depths of Depression to the Light of God's Glory.......2007-05-12

I am bias because I know the author personally. She lives her beliefs and that makes all the difference in my opinion. This book offers a real life experiential alternative to medication for depression or chemical imbalances. It is written in a down to earth, conversational style which makes it a quick and enjoyable read. For anyone exploring their own faith and what Christ can do for you in an immensely important area in your life, I can recommend this book.

I have been training and riding barrel horses for 24 years and feel that this is the best barrel racing book I have ever come across. It is a great tool for all levels of barrel racers- from beginner to experienced. I found the chapters regarding barrel horse bloodlines and solving common problems very interesting. This book is easy to read and comprehend and has magnificent pictures to visually display the content. Worth the money!

This book contains hundreds of beautiful color photos and is nice enough to be a "coffee table" book (that's where mine is). Book Description

Taking a highly original, thematic approach to the study of Horatio Lord Nelson, this book analyzes the admiral's unique war-fighting style. Doctrine, tactics, and operational art are part of the analysis, as are Nelson's command and leadership abilities and his attitudes and beliefs. But the book's focus is on how all these elements combined to form the man whose infectious ethos spread through his entire force. It shows that Nelson's creative genius, excitable and intense personality, dramatic visage, and fervor for all things martial not only inspired courage and loyalty but so dazzled and enflamed the hearts and minds of his men that he reached near cult status in his lifetime.

As a professional military analyst who has devoted his career to researching, writing, and teaching about the tactics and operational art of warfare, the author draws on his own training and experience to view the admiral's war fighting from a vantage point not accessible to many of Nelson's leading biographers. Joel Hayward breaks free from the constraints of chronology to thematically explore in greater-than-usual depth and coherence the key aspects of Nelson's fighting style and to answer questions not previously raised about that style and its supporting ideas, including to what degree Nelson's style can be adopted by modern warriors. Nelson scholars and enthusiasts will consider the book to be a fine companion to the more traditional studies of the great admiral. The book will also appeal to students of warfare in general, especially those who focus on the Napoleonic period. 256 pages. 9 photographs. 7 maps. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Hardcover. 6 x 9 inches.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2006-05-20

I'm in the US Navy and certainly wasn't looking at books on Brits when searching for a book on early maneuver warfare. But in a bibliography on maneuver I came across Hayward's book, which was both highly recommended and had an entire chapter on Nelson and maneuver warfare. It was exactly what I wanted: evidence that the ideas imbedded within our current doctrine go way back. I ended up actually reading the entire book and to my surprise found out that John Paul Jones wasn't the father of modern naval warfare; Nelson was. The book is full of insight into the nature of war at sea. I think it would benefit sailors in every navy. Rob Wheble.

4 out of 5 stars a fascinating personality and genius.......2006-05-20

Although there are many fine biographies of Nelson, I recommend this lesser-known work, for it provides a number of key points about Nelson as a human being and as a military leader.

1. Nelson was a logistical genius. It's nice to be brilliant on the battlefield, but if your men are exhausted, poorly fed and sick, and your equipment falling apart, you will probably lose despite your brilliance. As hundreds of written commands show, Nelson worked tirelessly to supply his men with fresh food whenever possible and gather the materials needed to keep the ships in fighting trim. He was at sea for months before Trafalgar, in weather that wore down his wooden ships and exposed sailors, while the French and Spanish were in port. By all rights they should have been rested and full of spirit, but it was they who were ill and the British who were fit. This stems largely from Nelson's obsessive concern for the logistical train needed to support his massive 27-ship fleet.

2. Nelson truly cared about the men under his command. While he understood the need for discipline, he was neither bullying nor cruel toward his men, who were often "pressed," i.e. virtually enslaved by press-gangs which prowled the waterfronts and ports of England to fill the fleet's gundecks. Nelson focused enormous attention on finding fresh meat and other foodstuffs for his sailors, even spending his own money at times to do so.

3. Nelson's confidence inspired those under his command. By all accounts, the English sailors went into battle confident of victory, simply because Nelson was their leader.

4. Genius is not transferable to other fields of endeavor. One might guess that Nelson would have brought some military genius to land warfare as well, but in fact his personality and naval skills did not transfer at all to land. He was an abysmally inept leader on land, impulsive when planning was key, impatient when patience was key, and reckless when victory was impossible. Indeed, both his injuries (loss of vision in one eye and loss of an arm) occurred in land battles in which he'd been tasked to overcome forts. He failed in both battles.

5. Nelson empowered his captains to pursue an overall battle plan with their own initiative. Nelson was very careful to explain his overall plan for the battle--the so-called "Nelson touch"--but he left the details and implementation up to each captain. Thus as the battle unfolded, the English always had the advantage of individual initiative, while the competing fleets tended to rely on direct orders issued through signal flags-- flags which were often obscured by the smoke from black powder gunfire or the interference of other ships.

6. Nelson rose through the ranks in a window of British naval history when command was based on merit rather than birthright. While the higher reaches of naval command continued to be filled by those born into nobility, the war with Napoleon forced the British to look outside the narrow confines of the noble classes for actual talent in battle. After all, what good is a peerage if your estate is occupied by the French?

7. Like many "great people," Nelson was a jumble of contradictory internal forces. The son of a vicar, Nelson remained deeply devout throughout his life, despite the violence of his chosen trade and his blatantly adulterous affair with Lady Hamilton. Though he held no special rancor for the various other enemies he was ordered to battle in his career (Americans, Danes, etc.), he did hate the French with what can only be called unbridled passion. He thought they were threatening civilization as he understood it and Napoleon had to be crushed. Though there were periods of "peaceful co-existence" in the Napoleonic Wars, Nelson believed the only solution was to completely defeat the French. Though blessed with compassion for the men under his command, he was vainglorious to a fault, often emblazoning himself with a chestful of gaudy medals.

8. "The Nelson Touch" consisted of thinking outside the norms of 18th century sea warfare. Nelson generally gained the advantage by doing the unexpected or taking what others would see as unacceptable risk. For instance, in the Battle of the Nile, which drove Napoleon from North Africa, he engaged in a night battle, a very chancy affair considering the presence of nearby shoals and the impossibility of communicating with his captains.

So consider celebrating Trafalgar's 200th anniversary by reading more about a fascinating personality and genius-- even if his genius was war at sea.

4 out of 5 stars A different approach to the life of Lord Nelson.......2006-03-04

This book on Nelson takes a different tack than most biographies. It has a non-traditional approach and it does not cast Nelson as a divine being. Instead Hayward uses a thematic essay approach to get at who Nelson was and to make him relevant to our age. As a result, I found Hayward's methodology to be highly original and interesting.

Using themes, Nelson's command and leadership technique is examined from six different perspectives. To derive an understanding of a man as complex and compelling as Nelson can not be done simply by producing a historical recanting of his exploits and accomplishments. Besides that has been done numerous times over.

Hayward does an excellent job of resolving the apparent hypocrisies in Nelson's life (his religiosity and adulterous affair with Lady Hamilton) as well as shed some light on his creative genius in war and his ability to inspire a Nation. The author's approach to Nelson's warfighting from a viewpoint of maneuver warfare, land war, and coalition warfare is unique and makes this book relevant to a modern warrior.

5 out of 5 stars Originality abounds.......2005-12-12

This is the most interesting of the recent Nelson books mainly because its author asks significant new questions and digs deeper into areas of Nelson's military experience than we are used to. The result is highly pleasing.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Approach to the Life of Nelson.......2005-12-11

Joel Hayward's "For God and Glory: Lord Nelson and His Way of War" is a different type of biography. Hayward discards the standard chronological account in favor of an examination of key themes in Nelson's approach to war. These themes include Nelson's conception of his enemies, his spiritual beliefs, his leadership style, his warfighting styles on sea and land, and his experience of coalition warfare. Hayward leverages his background in military strategy and history to explore Nelson's experiences with respect to these themes and how they contributed to the growth and application of his leadership skills. The author uses many examples from Nelson's very long life in uniform, in and out of combat, to illustrate his points. The result nicely highlights Nelson's gifts as a leader and how they directly related to his success in combat.

This approach has much to recommend itself for a professional military audience and for the student of the military art. The book as written would lend itself nicely to use by leadership seminars in or out of the military. Nelson's stress on developing and trusting subordinates and issuing mission-type orders, while setting a superb personal example, are leadership traits applicable in a variety of circumstances.

Those looking for a more typical biography, or who are unfamiliar with Nelson's career, may find the thematic approach difficult to follow. This approach causes some repetition in the discussion of incidents in Nelson's military life; the narrative is purposely thin on details of Nelson's life away from the British Navy.

This is an excellent though not perfect work. Hayward is an unabashed fan of Lord Nelson and makes repeated assertions of his greatness as part of emphasizing his points; the discussion might have benefited from a little less of this. Hayward goes to some lengths to rationalize Nelson's abandonment of his wife in favor of his mistress, Emma Hamilton, a discussion that may not be necessary to the examination of Nelson's military skills. Hayward appears to misread Clausewitzian military theory to argue that Nelson's practice of manuever warfare made him practically unique to his time. In fact, Clausewitz advocated the defeat of an enemy's main army, not frontal assaults on it as Hayward implies. The point is well-taken that Nelson was an advanced and daring military thinker. The hardcover edition suffers from some annoying editing challenges: the proper titles of named individuals such as the Duke of Wellington are repeatedly rendered in lower case.

This book is highly recommended to the professional military officer and students of the military art and of leadership in general.

This was a book that I could not put down. I love this series of books. I lost a lot of sleep because i couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. The story has it all, drama, suspense, romance, & action. This was one of the better sci-fi trilogy books that I've read in a long time. I highly recommend reading this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best book I ever read.......2001-11-18

This was a great book. It was addicting and the action and suspense was good. Its the best fantasy book by my opinion. The ending of the book is completely unpredictable, the book changes from time to time. At first your focusing on the elves and Night of Glory then near the end of the book its about 1000 years later! I strongly recomend this book if your a fan of fantasy novels, if not its still probably a good book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Compelling and unusual historical fantasy.......2007-06-29

It's the first half of the trilogy's middle volume, and it's travelogue time. This is the section where many trilogies sag, but Brenchley paints a vivid picture of desert travel and its hardships and occasional delights. There's also another display of how very different this series is from standard fantasy derived from Northern European mythology, with the world of the djinn beautifully evoked.

This volume gets the party from the Roc, where they met, to the place in the desert where they get to meet another major character, with some interesting diversions and scenery along the way. At the outset the party consists of Marron, Julianne and Elisande; Rudel and Redmond, the two Surayonese men; and Jemel, the young Sharai man introduced in volume 1 and briefly encountered in volume 2. The party have conflicting interests, not least because Marron and Elisande were involved in the death of Jemel's lover during the battle in the Roc, but they also have common interests and a common destination. That should be enough to keep the party together, but they aren't the only one with an interest in the supernatural burden Marron carries.

That burden, the almost-living weapon known as the Daughter, showed the first of its secrets at the end of the previous volume; in the trek across the desert we learn more of what it can do and what it does to its host, and a little of what it actually is. Marron isn't the person anyone would have chosen to carry it, but proves equal to the task.

And again there are hints of various romantic interests and entanglements, without it being at all obvious how these will eventually be resolved. This segment of the story concludes with another twist of one of the romantic plotlines initiated in the first volume, enticing the reader to read on.

This volume introduces more characters and adds new plot threads without concluding earlier ones, but it does expand on hints dropped in the earlier volumes, adding more depth to the world and the main characters. With the original book being split into two for the US edition, it should be seen as a segment in a long novel rather than a novel in its own right, and in that context offers enough to make for a satisfying read while still leaving the reader wanting to move on to the next volume.

3 out of 5 stars even slower.......2007-05-02

With the third volume of Mr Brenchley's saga, its characters escape the oppressive presence of the Roq de Ransom to find themselves in the frightening waste lands east of Outremer.
The map at the beginning of the book cancel what little mistery was left about the location of this series.

We abandon for the time being Anton, left at the Roq, but we gain Jemel and Rudel, much more important in this third book than they were.
All is not well though. If Jemel and Elisande acquire the status of POV bearers and relative depth, but Marron, after the emotional peak of the second volume, seems here pervaded by the same coolness of the cruel Daughter he carries in himself becoming sort of distant and rigid. If this was meant to express the change he undergoes because of the Daughter it fails miserably and deprives us of one of the two main characters.

SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER

Another problem is that Elisande's love for him appears suddenly out of thin air. It is finely done, even the description of her pointless jealousy of Jemel but still we are given no basis for it.
Jemel's love for Marron, that is perfectly justified instead, is ill worded, as if the author were unwilling -or worse embarassed- to indulge in it and in the -avoidable- risk of melodrama. We are not even told what Marron thinks about it.

Worst of it all is that there are several paragraphs of the book where the plot flows so slowly and filled of unnecessary details that it drags. Are we dealing with a second-volume crisis? (remember this series was originally a trilogy and that this is the first part of the original second volume)

5 out of 5 stars Supplies crucial additional insight into the characters.......2004-03-06

A Dark Way to Glory (The Third Book of Outremer) follows Chaz Brenchley's unlikely party of heroes, each of whom we have already met yet still seek to truly understand, from the outskirts of the fortress Roq de Rancon across the dangerous deserts of the Sharai to the brink of Rhabat. The weariness of such a harsh and dangerous journey weighs heavily on the action in this installment of the series, providing a welcome opportunity to learn more about each of the major characters and the very different motivations driving each of them. Those who thirst for battle scenes will find only a few such moments here, but each fight described in these pages radiates an intensity not seen previously in the series.

A Dark Way to Glory provides readers the time to evaluate and come to terms with the shocking truths revealed in the final pages of the previous book, Tower of the King's Daughter. Each major character has now faced a crossroads and made his/her choice for the future. Julianne de Rance, daughter of the King's Shadow, has chosen to wed and then steal away (reluctantly) from her husband, risking love and life to follow the instructions of a mysterious djinni. With her is Elisande, an enigmatic young lady from Surayon, the "enfolded land" which the forces of Outremer seek to find and destroy; her friendship with Julianne is only one of several reasons she travels to Rhabat. In part, she goes to thwart her hated father Rudel, the jongleur whom we now know is a statesman of Surayon - as is Redmond, the torture victim rescued from the cells beneath Roq de Rancon. Jemel, a Sharai fighter whose blood brother fell at the hands of the knight Sieur Anton d'Escrivey, strips himself of all tribal affiliation and insists on accompanying the party for reasons of his own. At the heart of the whole story, though, stands young Marron; he is a truly sympathetic character who has, despite the best of intentions, betrayed the holy order of the Knights Ransomers, his master knight, and now his very own people. Circumstances beyond his control have made him the Ghost Walker, holder of the darkly mysterious, deadly force known as the Daughter. In this book, the complex secrets of the Daughter slowly begin to reveal themselves.

The desert peoples of Outremer have prayed for the return of the Ghost Walker for centuries, dreaming of the day their most awesome weapon, the Daughter, would be taken up once again by the Ghost Walker and used to destroy their enemies. No one among these people would have ever chosen Marron to be the Daughter's human vessel; the lad has seen and done things that truly haunt him, and he refuses to kill again. Certainly, the enigmatic Shadow Dancers, untold generations of whom have prepared to serve the Ghost Walker when he returns, are certainly not well pleased by the weakness of the chosen one (whom they insist on accompanying across the desert). I have to admit that the revelations of the previous book caused me to place some distance between myself and Marron, but his struggles to face up to the almost impossible challenges and internal struggles he must face as the Ghost Walker warmed me to him once again. He is still really just a boy, but he carries the greatest burdens in all of Outremer within his very body and soul. Young Elisande is fast becoming as interesting a character as Marron, though. The first two Outremer books failed to divulge many of her secrets, but her character grows tremendously as she and her party find their way across the desert. The depth and range of her emotions and thoughts threaten to force Julianne, a strong female character in her own right, somewhat into the background for the time being.

I daresay that Brenchley's bold revelations regarding Marron at the end of Tower of the King's Daughter may have rubbed some readers the wrong way. It certainly forced me to step back and reappraise everything I had just read. I would urge all readers to forge ahead with the series, though. I was appalled by the dark secret that was revealed, but Marron reemerges as an extraordinarily deep, enigmatic, and sympathetic soul in the pages of A Dark Way to Glory. Few fantasy writers can equal the power and richness of Chaz Brenchley's prose, and I am more excited than ever to see what this visionary author has in store for me in the remaining Outremer books.

He was the man for her. Surely he could see that! Kit lacey exuded a passionaltely artistic nature well beyond her nineteen years. but in Queensland's tiny, tropical Eden Cove no man existed to match her lust for life, until international news correspondent Thorne Stratton invaded her private paradise. Suddenly Kit felt she had crashed into some dangerous force field. Nothing in her experience had prepared her for this man's magnetism. Yet, despite Thorne's intense interest in her life, he kept a physical distance between them, much to Kit's confustion and frustration!
