Jean Kirkpatrick: PhD, Founder of Women for Sobriety, and Eloquent Writer.......2006-12-03
I couldn't put "Turnabout" down. Dr. Kirpatrick shares the details of her struggle with alcohol, and how she overcame her addiction. It's written with honesty and truth - no soft-peddling what alcohol can do to a person who is alcohol-intolerant.
She also wrote "Good-bye Hangovers, Hello Life", which was another page-turner. This companion book to "Turnabout" is a little less personal, and more of a self-help book for women who are struggling.
Both books changed my life, and I am grateful to Dr. Kirkpatrick for writing them. Her books are easy to read and her concepts are easy to grasp. She understands the alcohol-related issues that are unique to women.
Must Read!.......2000-07-14
Jean Kirkpatrick and Women for Sobriety saved my life and my self-esteem. No one should deny herself the strong and wonderful program that WFS and Jean Kirkpatrick provide. I am a huge fan, and have and will read this book over and over again.
Seeing things in a new light!.......1999-07-29
She is offering a new way of recovery, based on 13 statements of Women for Sobriety that she developed to help her stay sober and now she is sending this message out to other women who want to stay sober and don't like to attend AA meetings. WFS is similar to AA but it is based on self-esteem statements that make a woman more competant in themselves. Definitly a new way of life to see things in a new light and move on with your life with out alcohol and drugs.

Book Description
In the year 2000 Melly and Anny Beth had reached the peak of old age and were ready to die. But when offered the chance to be young again by participating in a top-secret experiment called Project Turnabout, they agreed. Miraculously, the experiment worked -- Melly and Anny Beth were actually growing younger every year. But when they learned that the final treatment would be deadly, they ran for their lives.
Now it is 2085. Melly and Anny Beth are teenagers. They have no idea what will happen when they hit age zero, but they do know they will soon be too young to take care of themselves. They need to find someone to help them before time runs out, once and for all....

Backward Aging.......2007-02-23
It was the year 2000, and Amelia was living in a nursing home. She was sick and had given up on her life. She was content to let her sons make all of the decisions for her, and she was ready to die. Then the doctors at the nursing home had her sign something. She wasn't quite sure what it was she was signing, but she signed anyway. Things began to change. One day she finds she doesn't need her hearing aid anymore. Amelia can swing her legs over the side of her bed again. Some people who live in the nursing home can walk again instead of being confined to wheelchairs. Amelia learns that what she signed was an agreement to participate in a study of an experimental drug that would reverse the effect of aging. Everyone at the nursing home has taken the drug, and they are all growing younger every day.
Things seem wonderful--it's a second chance at life! Then, on her first birthday back in time, Amelia realizes that she can't remember the last year of her life growing older. The nursing home residents realize that once they start growing younger, their memories of growing older disappear; they are rewritten with the new memories of growing younger. One man is afraid of forgetting his beloved wife's funeral where so many people said such nice things, and he is the first to request the Cure, the drug that will halt his age at that exact moment. The Cure has worked wonderfully in lab mice. But when this man takes the Cure, he immediately shrivels up and dies.
Amelia decides not to stick around very long in this place with the doctors and the other old people getting young. It is too frantic, too upsetting. Instead she and a friend, Anny Beth, decide to go off and live their lives together, experiencing the world a second time as they both grow younger and younger. However, they then get toward the end of their new lives. Amelia, now calling herself Melly, is sixteen and still growing younger. Anny Beth is eighteen. Soon they will not be able to live on their own. What will happen when they are toddlers again? They will need someone to take care of them. Thus begins the search for someone they can trust with their story and their lives.
I loved the whole idea of moving backward in time, and I thought the author did a good job of showing the potential problems with this sort of medical advance. I would have liked to see what things were like even more in the future, when Melly and Anny Beth were almost done with their lives.
Turnabout...almost perfect.......2006-10-17
This book is about two women. They are old and in a nursing home. One day a doctor gets them to sign a contract. Soon, both get injected with an un-aging serum. There is a cure, but it ends up killing whoever gets it. These two try to live a normal life and defy the odds. Turnabout was an outstanding book. The personalities of these people just jump off the page. Both the characters have a strong point of view which makes this adequate and above. The plot makes you think as well. The only bad part was the ending. It didn't wrap up the whole story. Margaret Peterson Haddix is the author of "Running Out of Time" I think Turnabout is better, but they are both interesting.
The fascinating concept of reverse aging.......2006-10-17
I've been intending to read Margaret Peterson Haddix's Shadow Children series for a while now, so I was intrigued when a friend put Turnabout into my hands last week. Turnabout falls into the category of speculative fiction, bordering on science fiction. It's the story of two elderly women in the year 2000 who are given an experimental drug that causes them to age backwards. Alternating chapters of the story take place in 2085, as the two are re-entering adolescence, fearful of what will happen as they become children, unable to care for themselves.
This is the second book I've read this year that features reverse-aging, after Gabrielle Zevin's Elsewhere. The two books are quite different in their approaches. Turnabout is relatively scientific, with discussion of telomeres and their impact on aging. Because much of the book takes place in the 2085, Haddix speculates about privacy laws, auto-guided cars, and other futuristic issues. Elsewhere, by contrast, is about reverse aging after death, in a place separate from Earth, and reflects a less scientific approach.
Turnabout addresses fascinating philosophical questions. What if when I neared the end of my life I could take some drug that would enable me to age backwards? Would I want to? What if as I aged backwards, I lost my memories of the corresponding years from my original forward life? Would I still want to do it? Would I be willing to give up memories of things that I had experienced? Would I be the same person if I didn't have my memories?
Then there are the pragmatic issues. The two women/girls vow to keep their reverse-aging a secret from the general public. This entails frequent relocation, not being able to contact their relatives, and particular challenges as they hit adolescence (again), such as no longer being old enough to drive. How can you marry someone if you're aging backwards and the other person is aging forwards? How could you possibly have children? What happens when you reach the date of your original birth?
Turnabout is in large part an examination of these issues. However, it also tells the compelling story of Melly and Anny Beth as they race against their own changing bodies to find someone who will care for them as they get younger. The two are reasonably well-drawn characters, with a closer relationship to one another than either has had with anyone else, best friends and de facto sisters. Each has her own unique reasons for wanting to live her second life to the fullest, and her own ghosts from the past to escape.
This is a fun read that will make the reader think a bit about science and aging, and what the future might be like. I look forward to reading Margaret Peterson Haddix's other books.
This book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on October 15, 2006.
Turnabout is Fabulous.......2006-08-06
WARNING: SPOILERS!
I love Margaret Peterson Haddix, and I was very glad to find this book up to her usual standard. Both the main characters, Anny Beth and Melly (who is also called Amelia, Amy, and Ms. Hazelwood throughout the book, to clear up any confusion) are deep and sympathetic characters. When a scientific experiment meant to turn around the aging process gets out of control, and the scientists learn there is no way to STOP this "unaging", Melly and Anny Beth find themselves as teenagers. . . and growing younger every day. Melly, the practical one, starts to look into someone who might be willing to adopt them when they grow younger still, while Anny Beth is just enjoying life as a teenager-- for the second time around. Though the ending is slightly weak, and we sadly do not get to find out what happens to Melly and Anny Beth when they reach zero (will they turn around and start aging again, or will they simply disappear?) Turnabout is still a fun, enjoyable read filled with memorable characters and strong writing. Great for anyone over the age of twelve or so.
Turnabout .......2006-03-22
This book was science fiction, but perhaps not for long. The idea of reversing age does seem impossible now, but maybe in the future they could invent something like this. At some points, Turnabout was hard to understand. I did not understand why Melly and Anny Beth were running away from the agency, and the ending didn't really conclude the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in futuristic ideas.

Somewhat Disappointing.......2007-01-27
I am a big fan of Boston based detective fiction and have read all of Healy's books. I found Turnabout not up to his usual standard, but still worth reading.
Price to Pay.......2004-04-12
Think about this: if you had the chance to be young again would you take it; even if you lost all your memories eventually? That's what the 50 people in the book The Turnabout had to ask themselves only they didn't have a choice. What is it that attracts us to the young years so much? Would it be worth your memories to go back to your youth?
I personally would not want to lose my memories. I'm only 15 and I know that I wouldn't give them up to re-attempt my life as bad as it may seem sometimes. I feel memories are one if not the most important thing to keep in this world. One of my leading fears is the dreadful fear of developing Alzheimer's and losing everything I've worked to have. In the end really all we have left are memories; this thought always seems to kill me too.
But you might be thinking if all we have left in the end is memories and that's depressing why not just go back to where you're living all those memories? I don't exactly know why I feel I'd rather not but I still wouldn't. It's still a matter of knowing I had something in my life. Would you want to just forget the love that you and your wife shared, or lose the memories of raising your children, or all the lives you might have touched in your life somehow? I wouldn't give these memories for anything. These things are the reason I live. And if I had them I wouldn't want to risk losing them (or the memories of them) and risk not being able to do it again.
The Turnabout was a very thought provoking book as you can see. Many questions were brought to my head. You'll have to read and decide for yourself what you believe because what you believe is one of the most important things to decide in the world or else your not really living I feel.

MUST READ FOR WOMEN ALCOHOLICS.......2002-03-23
I am a recovering alcoholic and I thank Jean Kirkpatrick for my sobriety today. Ms. Kirkpatrick is the founder of the Women for Sobriety "New Life" Program which is the first self-help recovery program exclusively for women. Women For Sobriety groups are world-wide and offer support for the alcoholic woman. This book was my first step toward sobriety. I now attend AA meetings and have been sober for 14 months.
If you are female and think you have a drinking problem, don't delay in getting this book.

An About-Face.......2006-01-28
Humor is often misused, but in a master's hand, it can be the best tool to push a point. Here Thorne Smith helps us see marriage in a different light.
In Turnabout, Sally and Tim Willows revolt against the constrictions of their marriage. Sally wants romance and a job; Tim wants to be in the nude and wiggle his toes. It takes the intervention of an annoyed statue, Mr. Ram, who switches their bodies, to resolve these 'irreconciable differences'.
The novel is a brisk read, magnetically holding the attention to the last page. The hopelessness of the first chapter is conveyed colorfully, introducing us to the hilarious plot. Smith pours out wry double entendres, "one does not play with fire here, one actually uses it," and dry quips, "...then proceeded to give a loquacious dissertation on the virtues of brevity."
There are some lessons to be learned here, mind you, like getting to be in a person's shoe to feel his pain, but even without them, Turnabout can be read for its sheer fun with words. This is my first Thorne Smith read; it will be definitely not be my last.
Turnabout is More than Fair Play.......2005-03-07
I discovered this book decades ago in an old steamer trunk that belonged to my wife's late aunt. I was surprised to find it so hilarious since I had never heard of Thorne Smith. When I later found out he had authored "Topper", I understood. I could hardly put it down because it kept me wondering what disaster would next befall Tim - or should I say Sally? Read it! You will understand.
Also, to Catherine: Turnabout was made into a movie in 1940. I've yet to see it, but I've read some good reviews about it.
Reading and re-reading for forty years and still wonderful!.......2004-04-27
I first found this book when I was fifteen and have read it now at least fifty times. The characters and events still bring tears of laughter to my eyes. I've wished for a very long time that this could be made into a movie so more people could share Thorne Smith's vision. It is an intelligent read and a wonderful look at urban life in the late 20's. Block out some time and prepare to laugh out loud.
Delightful Comedy.......2000-10-14
Read this fantasy on several levels. Mr. Smith is a wordsmith able to delight while commenting on the human condition. It is especially refreshing to draw comparisons with the 20's and today.
Interesting and funny "what if".......1999-11-22
The 1920's through the eyes of a husband and wife who switch bodies with each other. While some of the gags are a bit dated, it was interesting to view male/female attitudes of that era. What would you do if you swapped bodies with someone of the opposite gender here in 1999? I know what I would do.

Book Description
After her free-spirited mother dies, Livvy is uprooted from her New York home and sent to Baltimore to live with her mother's old college friend, a woman Livvy has never heard of. Jessie is nothing like Livvy's mother: She's sensible, likes to weave, and doesn't even have pierced ears. What she does have is The Turnabout Shop, where she and her mother sell antiques, and a family larger than any Livvy has ever known. She also has a bunch of warm, quirky neighbors, including a girl Livvy's age. Set down to live among strangers, Livvy begins again from scratch, discovering that even without her mother, she can still learn and laugh and love, and take root in a whole different world.

The Turnabout Shop.......2002-10-15
The Turnabout Shop by Colby Rodowsky is a good book. The main character is fifth-grader Ann Olivia Lyons, nicknamed Livvy. Livvy used to live with her mother, Althea, in New York, but now Althea is dead and Livvy has to go live with her mother's friend from college in Baltimore, Jessie Barnes. Jessie Barnes is a plain and sensible woman, nothing like Althea was. Livvy misses Althea and thinks that she will never get along in Maryland. But then she goes to Jessie and her mother Ivy's antiques store, the Turnabout Shop, and also meets Lu, a girl her age who lives nearby. Livvy and Lu become good friends. Livvy also meets Jessie Barnes's neighbors and relatives. She gets along with all of them. But she and Jessie don't get along too well. Will Jessie and Livvy ever feel like family?
Being An Orphan.......2001-05-11
This book is a wonderful book. It explains how hard it is to be, well, kind of an orphan. Its about a fifth grade girl, who's mother just died of a sickness. Her name is Livvy. Since she does not have Dad, she has to be adopted or taken care of by another family. So she gets taken by a lady named Jessie. Although Jessie is very nice, Livvy still is not happy being her daughter. Jessie and her mother own an antique store called The Turnabout Shop. It is a nice little shop that Livvy sometimes likes to go there after school. Livvy does a lot of fun things with Jessie, including getting her ears pierced, but there is a problem, Livvy hates when people call Jessie her mother. Everything goes fine until something terrible happens to the Turnabout Shop. To find out what happens, read this sad but exciting book. I rate this book a four because like I said before, its sad and gives you a taste of being an orphan, and it is exciting.
