Book Description

There has never been a self publishing manual like this.

Aiming at Amazon is NOT about getting your book into bookstores. Instead, it lays out an innovative approach focused almost entirely on sales at Amazon.com. It tells exactly how to make a nonfiction book sell well online, with tips never before offered in print.

This book is also NOT about working with a "self publishing company." It introduces the printer/distributor used by almost all those companies themselves -- the one they keep secret so they can be middlemen and charge you double.

Forget bookstores. And forget self publishing companies. Let Aiming at Amazon reveal to you the NEW business of self publishing.

Planning to self-publish your book? Aaron teaches you how to bypass all the middle-men. Believe, I know - I published my first book through a publishing service (you'd know the name), and it was so easy. And it was FREE. BUT, by using them my book had to be priced too high to sell: $21.98 for a 228-page paperback novel. After reading Aiming at Amazon I learned how I could cut my retail price in half, yet still make a decent profit. I have just published the second edition of my first mystery novel, along with my second and third novels using the advice in this book. Check out one of them here:Hideaway Hospital Murders (Greg Tenorly Mystery Series, Book 2). I highly recommend Aiming at Amazon. Frankly, I'm surprised he's sharing the information instead of just keeping it to himself for his own use. So, if you're planning to self-publish your book, don't do anything else until you read this book!

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference guide.......2007-09-04

I have recently gone through the process of publishing a non-fiction book now listed on Amazon. Fortunately I came across this book just as I had completed my writing. Throughout the roughly six-month process of defining a market strategy and implementing it, Aiming at Amazon has been sitting next to my desk rather than on the bookshelf. Aaron Shepard is one of those rare "self-help" authors who provide common-sense, practical advice rather than just rah-rah bromides and useless pep talks. If you are self-publishing, start here.

5 out of 5 stars So good if you are a competitor I hope you don't read it!.......2007-09-01

I am an experienced publishing exec with numerous NYT bestsellers in my past, but Aaron Shepherd has changed the way I look at publishing. A truly great book.

Oh, and did you notice that to scroll down to the customer reviews you first had to get past the best Amazon page you have ever seen? And that's just one reason to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-08-23

Aaron Shepard's Aiming at Amazon book is a light read full of helpful tips on tailoring your publishing endeavors at one of the best sources of online book sales: Amazon.com. In this how-to, Shepard meticulously shows how to get your book put together and "optimized" for online shopping. Along with his friend, Morris Rosenthal's book on POD book publishing Print-on-Demand Book Publishing: A New Approach To Printing And Marketing Books For Publishers And Self-Publishing Authors, any new publisher can have their books online making money in under a month (approx.)Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars One Of The Better Books .......2007-05-13

I did like this book. Yes, there is some motivational gibberish involved, but it didn't annoy me. Instead, it struck me as friendly and chatty.

But. This book just does not hold a candle to Dan Poynter's "Writing Nonfiction: Turning Thoughts Into Books." Yes, it's about writing nonfiction, and yes, it can be used to quickly organize any writing project. I've been teaching screen and play writing for thirty years, and Poynter's book helped me tighten my own teaching and writing.

Again, Bollow's book is great. I own both mentioned above, and simply prefer Poynter's.

1 out of 5 stars Let's be lighting FAST: don't buy this book; don't wastet your time.......2007-02-28

Let me say what I have to say in a lighting FAST way (that I did not learn by reading this book): it is tedium itself; repetitive, uninspired, tiresome. As if this was not enough, it has plenty of nauseating humbug supposed to motivate you.

Keep away from this book. I am sure you have better things to buy with your money; better things to do with your time; better things to feed your brain with.

(By the way: I gave it one star because Amazon does not allow me to give it zero or less.)

3 out of 5 stars Good system. Not revolutionary, though........2006-10-09

Bollow's method for dynamic writing is not revolutionary as mentioned in the book description. Similar methods have been used by writing professors in undergraduate and graduate curriculums. During my master's academic writing course in 1994 , for example, I learned the following method very similar to the FAST SYSTEM (FS):

1) Idea generation entails discussing a topic in pairs or groups. After that, students were supposed to brainstorm the topic, or noting down the various elements that come to mind as they reflect on the topic.

2. Freewriting according to H.D. Brown (1994) in his book "Teaching by principles" Teaching is "an initial exploration of the ideas that you have about a topic". At this point, students begin to develop their ideas and establish a viewpoint about an issue. According to Brown (1994), students should freewrite by writing whatever comes to mind about a topic for ten minutes without stopping, judging ideas, or worrying about spelling and grammar.

3. Drafting requires students to begin structuring their writing and making it coherent.

4. The final draft is produced after successive stages of drafting, editing, and revising.

Bollows, however, gives highly motivating tips to turn writing into a pleasurable task. By reading this book I've felt encouraged to go ahead with some of my projects that once I've found to be a burden.

By freewriting you write faster and better because your writing tends to become more natural and authentic. Bollows, as a result, writes in plain English and conveys his idea as he was talking to the reader. This is an essence for clear writing.

In addition, this is the first writing guide I know that presents a step-by-step system. Most of writing guides only provide a list of dos don'ts.

Finally, before applying the FS, Bollows urges the reader to become a proficient typist. I strongly believe that by combing skillful touch typing with the FS you will be able to write faster and improve your logical reasoning.

That's the book to have if you really want to write ! I was in a writer's block since two years, and now, I'm writing every day ! Thanks a lot, Jeff ! With "If you can talk, you can write", this book changed my life !

The concepts are clear and the book is very motivating.

Illustrator-author Patricia Polacco returns to Norman Rockwell-era Michigan for another autobiographical meditation, this time on the importance of passing "the lightning of our stories and our heritage into the jars of our children's minds."

A fondly remembered family reunion provides the sweeter-than-sweet backdrop for this picture book, as Polacco recalls how she and her cousins eagerly anticipated her Gramma helping them "catch lightning in a jar." The "lightning," of course, eventually comes thanks to some incarcerated insects, but is warmly preceded by all sorts of metaphorical strikes and flashes: Auntie Bertha's trademark meatloaf cooked with a hard-boiled egg in the middle ("like a giant eye"), watermelon-seed-spitting and croquet games (interrupted by "friendly quarrels about bent hoops, crooked wickets and wanting to take reshots"), and, most importantly, oh-so-many stories about an umbrella-loving rattlesnake, a seven-mile walk to a one-room schoolhouse, and a grandfather who "saved souls as a circuit preacher when he wasn't farming."

Polacco's nostalgic pencil and watercolor illustrations chronicle the day's frolics, all the way up to its buggy climax. She then leaves the Greatest Generation behind for an instructive final act, about a new reunion and "a new crop of children": "I'll send them home with full bellies, tired bones and flickering jars in their laps. Their hearts will be overflowing. Full of lightning, put there by folks who loved them even before they were born." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

    Book Description

It's family reunion time! Trisha and her cousins can hardly wait to see one another again. They can't decide what they like best: the great feast (with zillions of meatloafs and gazillions of Jell-O salads), the softball game, the storytelling . . . the yearly rituals go on and on. But this year, Gramma has a new surprise in store: She promises to teach the grandchildren to catch lightning in a jar. Lightning in a jar! Trisha can't wait to find out what she means. It's a secret she will pass down to her own grandchildren one day, along with the family stories handed down with love through all the generations.

5 out of 5 stars When Lightning Comes in a Jar.......2006-10-12

This book is a very good book that I have read in my class. This book is by a very good writer named Patricia Polacco. This book is fiction. The main characters are Trisha,Lydia, Sandy, and Trisha's dads side of the family.

In the beginning of the story Trisha's family is coming for a family reunion. At the party Trisha meets Lydia and Sandy and they eat gazillions of Jell-os and Meatloafs, that are each a differnt kind that represents each of the Aunts cooking. Then after they eat they have their Annual Basball game, croquet, bag races, Watermelon- seed -spitting contests, and rides on grandpa's horse. They also see how tall everybody is. Next the Aunts tell stories about old time photos. they also get a family photo. Then when night falls grandma tells a poem about lightning bugs and the kids catch fireflies. Then everbody waits till next year to see everybody again.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes family reunions and some fiction and Non-fiction. I liked this book because it has a lots of things happening and some of it is Non-fiction and fiction mixed togther.

5 out of 5 stars Grandmother creates memories for her grandchildren.......2003-03-23

The theme of this moving story can be summed up in the last two paragraphs. "I'll send them home with full bellies, tired bones and flickering jars in their laps. Their hearts will be overflowing. Full of lightning, put there by folks who loved them even before they were born. Gramma knew this well.
She also knew that someday they would tell their children about all of us, and of the magic nights when we caught lightning in a jar."
Inspired by another of Polacco's real life memories, she writes about a family reunion, after a forty-one-year gap. Her grandmother organizes all the children, teaching them how to catch fireflies. The children put these fireflies in a jar and then there is magic! Childhood memories are the ones that sustain us through our adult life. And often, we will pass these memories on to our own children and grandchildren. This is a precious book that will leave all readers with a warm fuzzy feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Family Traditions and Heartfelt Memories............2002-07-26

"Today is the family reunion! I can hardly wait. My dad's side of the family will come soon. It's been ages since I've seen them all..." And as Trisha anxiously awaits the arrival of all her relatives, she remembers the last family reunion at Gramma's house, so many years ago. First all the wonderful food, including about a zillion meatloafs, each made by an auntie from a different recipe, and a gazillion different Jello salads shaking and shimmering on the table. Then there were the games, baseball, croquet, potato sack races, and watermelon spitting contests. Next, all the kids were carefully measured on the side of the milk shed, and Trisha remembers looking at the marks of her gramma and aunties when they were just girls. And last, out came the old photo albums and stories of walking seven miles to school and seeing "the first-ever flying machine in the state of Michigan." And as the day ended and night fell, "small bursts of starlight puffed up out of the grass", and all the children ran to catch lighning in a jar..... Inspired by her own childhood memories, and "the real-life experience of hosting a large reunion after a forty-one year gap between family gatherings", Patricia Polacco's evocative, heartfelt text is full of imagery and magic as she draws the reader into her large and boisterous family for an enchanting day of fun. But it's her expressive artwork that really brings the story to life, and each two-page, water-color and pencil spread is filled with nostalgic, joyous detail. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, When Lightning Comes In A Jar makes a marvelous read aloud the entire family can share and enjoy together, and is a treasured slice of history told with great insight, wisdom, humor, and love. "I'll send them home with full bellies, tired bones and flickering jars in their laps. Their hearts will be overflowing. Full of lighning, put there by folks who loved them even before they were born. Gramma knew this well. She also knew that someday they would tell their children about all of us, and of the magic nights when we caught lightning in a jar."

    4 out of 5 stars More Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes--Or Less!.......2003-08-23

I got this book from the library and like it so much, I'm ordering one for myself. [A couple of weeks ago, I accidently ordered the first one, and it has its merits too, so I'm not disappointed. The first book (same title except for the word "More") has a section on tips at the beginning of the book and 5 meal menus at the end of the book.]

I love the recipes in this book, particularly the grilling recipes--I use a family size Foreman grill. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that I usually keep on hand, and the ones I have tried are very tasty.

One caveat: Check the carbohydrate count before you decide to use a recipe. Many of the desserts in particular are too high in carbohydrates for diabetics. (Most recipes are pretty good in the fat and sodium levels.)

I wish these books had more complete menus like the 5 in the first book. (This book has no menus.)

3 out of 5 stars Mainly for families.......2001-07-08

Shortly after being diagnosed as a diabetic, I ordered several cookbooks including both this book and its predecessor. The recipes in both books seem to be wonderful and quick. However, we have not used either book very much because almost all recipes are for 6 or more servings. We are two people; they just don't work for us. More menus also would be helpful, especially to the newly diagnosed. Only one book (the first one) has menus, and they are mainly for entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars More Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes- or Less!.......2000-05-09

The wide variety of recipes for the Diabetic, and the health conscious takes the meal preparer from dips, through main course and dessert. All the exchanges are readable on the recipe page as well as preparation time. With this one book, I use all the different recipes, they can be presented so well, no one at my dinner table knows I am a Diabetic cooking for a Diabetic, rather that I cook tasty meals we all enjoy. 4 out of 5 stars Light Space Opera -- and lots of fun.......2006-05-07

David Drake's With the Lightnings, from 1998, is the first of a space opera series featuring Lieutenant Daniel Leary of the Republic of Cinnabar navy. As far as I can tell there have been three further books with a fifth in the series, Some Golden Harbor, due this year. The model here is clearly naval adventure fiction resembling Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, or perhaps C. S. Forester's Hornblower series. I can't tell if the correspondences with Hornblower might not be closer than with O'Brian, but there are definitely points of comparison with the Aubrey/Maturin books.

Daniel Leary is a junior lieutenant from a powerful family on the planet Cinnabar, leader of a group of human-colonized worlds. His father is one of the leading politicians on Cinnabar, but Daniel and his father are not on speaking terms. Leary is assigned to a small diplomatic mission to the independent planet Kostroma, which has historically been neutral but favoring Cinnabar in an ongoing rivalry with a fairly evil seeming group of worlds, the Alliance. A new Elector has taken over on Kostroma, and it's necessary to make sure the Alliance doesn't sway this Elector's opinions.

Leary has an interest in natural history (thus Drake takes a "Maturin" characteristic and transfers it to his "Aubrey"-analog), and he makes his way to the Elector's Library. This library is run by Adele Mundy, who has spent 15 years or so in Alliance space learning to be a great librarian. (Er, information retrieval specialist.) But Adele is actually part of a once influential Cinnabar family, the Mundys of Chatsworth, most of whom were brutally murdered when they were accused of treason. The accusations were made by ... Corder Leary, Daniel's father. (It seems that the accusations were correct to an extent -- some of the Mundys were traitors, though not Adele, but the resulting punishment, murdering everyone connected with the family including Adele's 10 year old sister, was excessive.) Adele, basically apolitical, survived by virtue of being away in Alliance space. But when Adele realizes who Daniel is, she insults him gravely. Daniel's only recourse, he feels, is to fight a duel, but he finds a graceful way out of this and the two become friends of a sort.

But then, after a very long time setting things in place, all heck breaks loose. An Alliance spy has planned a coup, and the Elector is overthrown by a man in league with the Alliance. Most of the diplomats are summarily murdered, but Daniel escapes, along with a crew of "sailors" he has assigned to make shelves for Adele's library. And of course, Adele, a crack shot and a great hacker too, comes along.

There follows a series of hair-raising adventures, both on surface ships and space ships. Daniel Leary is shown (surprise!) to have brilliant leadership capabilities, while Adele proves a very resourceful communications officer type. (She seems well placed to take the Maturin role of non-Naval sidekick who will have a secret job as a spy on future missions.) And in the end Daniel more or less single-handedly (well, double-handedly with Adele, and also with the help of his 20 or so sailors) takes over a space ship and saves the day against amazing odds.

So, yes, it's basically pulp. The main characters are impossibly brilliant. The bad guys do some sneering. There are class assumptions, and servant/master relationship assumptions, that I have a hard time swallowing. The whole thing is pretty implausible. As others have said, the action takes a long time to start. I know all that -- but I still enjoyed the book immensely. It's just nice light fun. The main characters are engaging and easy to root for. (And so far as I can tell not destined for each other. (Adele is about a decade older than Daniel, and seems to be not interested in romantic relationships of any sort, while Daniel is very interested in short-term (i.e. one night) romantic relationships with girls who are much prettier and dumber than Adele.))

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Kick-off to the Cinnabar Leary/Mundy Series.......2006-04-23

It takes a little while for this story to kick into gear, so that the characters and story backdrop can be introduced; but there is plenty of action and intrigue in the later sections, to make up for the initial slow development.

This Military SciFi story takes place in the far future, in which mankind has discovered faster than light travel, and spread though hundreds of star systems in the galaxy, and where many competing factions have evolved. There are two main competing factions involved in this story: The Republic of Cinnabar - in whose Space Navy the main characters Leary and Mundy are a part; and The Alliance - a typical dictatorial "evil empire".

Our characters are thrown into a situation in which Cinnabar and The Alliance are manuevering for influence over an unstable but economically and tactically important Planetary system. When The Alliance takes advantage of a planetary leadership counter-coup to gain control over the planet, Leary and Mundy have to lead a small band of Cinnabars to try to undermine The Alliance from setting up a planetary defense system, and cementing their control over the planet.

Leary's talent for leadership, and Mundy's computer/communication/gunslinging/spying skills are combined with the various other Cinnabar characters' talents, and this leads to all sorts of interesting situations and outcomes - and it all leads up to a magnificent ending... I'm definately hooked on this Series, and have already started on the next book in the series: LT. LEARY, COMMANDING.

5 out of 5 stars As Exciting as Later Stories.......2005-09-14

I had read other volumes in this series and wanted to see "how it all started." Sometimes a series will start slow and build up as other books appear but the first story was just as exciting as all the rest. Now, I'm looking for more!

4 out of 5 stars Calling all librarians and those who are isolated and alone.......2005-09-02

I enjoyed this novel on several levels. I identified with the terrible isolation of the main characters. The librarian is a model of efficiency, and an excellent example of a lonely woman living by her own high standard without a single associate, friend or living kin. Mpst of us would "curl up and croak", but she perseveres. When she could rage at fate, she instead accepts a token from a young officer who is standing on his own (shaky) feet, having left the posh life provided by a political father, with whom he disagrees on moral grounds. His act of kindness has enormous consequenses. These two people with pride, and the dertermination to get the next step accomplished, overcome the odds. Imcompetence, and arrogance hamper ther enemies. I would recommend that every librarian read this, even if you don't like SF. It may offend the people who object to gun control, but I believe in hitting one's target on the range, and hoping never to face the reality. This young woman got slammed into viscious reality, and dealt with it, knowing the emotional cost. My only regret is that the author did not show us her nightmares, that she could have gotten comfort from other millitary service people. I hope she finds that comfort in future novels.

People who liked this may enjoy the series by Ms Lois Mcmaster Bujold which begins with "Shards of Honor". My favorite is "The Warrior's Apprentice" although the series with Miles is excellent overall.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre adventure story.......2005-02-24

You can read about the storyline in the other reviews so I won't repeat it here. I found this a mediocre adventure story that disappointed slightly in three ways: the characters had no depth, there was too much gore for my taste, and there wasn't very much science fiction in it. Except for a space battle in the last 20 pages, the book could have transpired on present-day Earth. Science fiction should either be good literature or have interesting science in it, I'm fine with either, but this book has neither. If you want adventure stories about plucky junior officers, I recommend the Hornblower novels instead.

5 out of 5 stars Light Yet Meaningful.......2006-09-11

I read this book a few days after my doctor told me he was "very concerned" I may have a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. I found the easy style of the book was something I definitely needed while my mind was racing in a million directions. I loved that I could identify with the author on silly things like what to wear to my next doctor's appointment. The lightness yet meaningful style of the book helps in a time when so much is going on around you.
