2 out of 5 stars Not very informative.......2003-07-01

When I first bought this book, I was already collecting most of the series mentioned (There is a of them on the front of the book). The first series mentioned was Ruth Fielding. Four formats were listed, of the five formats that exist. This was the first warning. All through the book, John Axe combined formats, or did not list them at all. Although it gives some nice eronious information (i.e. information about the stratmeyer synicate), most of the contents can be found after a two mininte search on Google. At one point, I emailed John Axe with a few Beverly Gray formats that he did not include in the guide. In his reply, he called them "anomalties", and compared them with some misprints that he owned. As of yet, I have not found a good guide, except ones for individual series. ...

4 out of 5 stars Great Book ..........2003-03-10

For the majority of the book, the glossy pages are filled with pictures of nearly every cover of our favorite girls' series books. The Dana Girls section does NOT contain all the different artwork and seems to be slapped together and added to the book at the last moment. But other than that, I liked the book...

3 out of 5 stars A slight disappointment.......2002-08-07

I bought this book because I wanted to see pictures of all the Dana Girls books. I can't believe that is the only series that isn't pictured fully! Only one book cover in each format of the Dana Girls is pictured. All the other series have every book pictured. That was very disappointing. It was fun to see new books added for this update of the author's previous book: Cherry Ames, Connie Blair, and Vicki Barr, but a letdown that the Dana Girls books were overlooked. I probably wouldn't have purchased this if I'd known.

Book Description

From the compilers of the popular Lists to Live By series come 200 powerful lists by some of the industry’s top Christian speakers and authors, including Chuck Colson, Joseph Stowell, Max Lucado, Pat Robertson, Shirley Dobson, Henry Blackaby, Dennis Rainey, Bill Gothard, Rick Warren, John MacArthur, Chuck Swindoll, and Bruce Wilkinson.

The lists are divided into twelve easy-to-reference sections, with topics like virtue, prayer, faith, Christian marriage, God’s wisdom, worship, fellowship/community, heaven, and family. Full of humor, insight, and practical advice, these lists will deepen faith, strengthen relationships, nurture hope, and build character.

The Power to Inspire

Life-giving truth is all around us, but who can remember it all? We’ve made it easy by gathering the most essential information into 200 powerful lists. Whether you need a spiritual lift, a moment’s encouragement, a deeper appreciation for worship, or wisdom for a key decision—it’s all here.

As you read through these priceless insights from respected Christian authors, linger over your favorite lists and savor the profound wisdom. Lists To Live By will deepen your faith, strengthen relationships, nurture hope, build character, and ultimately enrich your life.

Story Behind the Book

Every day you are bombarded with mountains of information, but how do you sort out what’s best? How do you remember it? How do you bring order to the chaos? We’ve made it easy by condensing some of the most valuable ideas into 200 bite-sized gems. The Oregonian newspaper ( Portland , OR ) calls list-o-mania the hottest, coolest, most sensational trend in pop culture. The bestselling Lists to Live By series is on top of that wave. In all of our books, we have intentionally avoided lists about the trivial…and instead focused on what really matters. In The Christian Collection we’ve searched the world (well, almost) for the most powerful and inspirational lists on prayer, faith, hope, heaven, love, family, worship, wisdom, and comfort. Like a compass, this collection will keep your life headed in the right direction. As with all the books in the series, these are not lists to do, but lists to become.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR WRITERS AND SPEAKERS.......2005-07-22

If you're a serious writer or speaker, you're always on the lookout for anecdotes and quotes to broaden the appeal of your books, articles, and speeches. Here's one collection that keeps what you need handy. The compilers say, "We've tried to catch the beauty of simplicity by taking powerful ideas and expressing them in only a few words. If it is true that the best gifts come in small packages, then reading this book will be like unwrapping more than two hundred small gifts that are filled with extraordinary inspiration."

The book is divided into thirteen topics, making it quick and easy to look up what you need. These subjects include: faith, growing deeper and stronger, God and His Word, worship and praise, prayer, marriage, family, community, success, wisdom, virtue, comfort for tough times, and eternal hope.

Here, you'll find the words of many well-loved Christian personalities in one concise reference manual. The acknowledgement section in the back attributes the lists to their original sources, which may lead to your further research on topics of interest.

But when you've got only a few days or hours to stand up and give a devotion or sermon, you may not have time to research in-depth -- that's where a book like this can be put to good use. You can drive home your point attributing it to an expert to further capture the attention of your audience.

Some of the authors included in this book include Max Lucado, John Piper, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Stanley, Charles Swindoll, Billy Graham, Anne Graham Lotz, Dennis & Barbara Rainey, Steve & Mary Farrar, Charles Spurgeon, Bill Gothard, St. Augustine, Barbara Johnson, Rick Warren, James Dobson, and Stormie Omartian. Plus, there are plenty of lists compiled directly from the Bible.

While I really like this book, I'm hoping the publisher will see this review and hear my one criticism: PLEASE DON'T SACRIFICE READABILITY FOR LOOKS! Who decided to print this book using hunter-green type in a light font? This is the most disappointing aspect of this book. It would be so much easier on the eyes if it were printed in black font. And since it's a reference manual that is most likely going to be skimmed until the perfect nugget is found, it should be highly readable. I know the color of the font matches the covers, and it does indeed look beautiful, but I hope my small plea may make someone aware of this problem. I look at this book far less than I would if it were printed in much more readable type.

3 out of 5 stars Another solid thriller.......2006-10-24

I seem to be in the minority giving this a three star rating, but I am very critical, my time is highly valued. I enjoyed the book greatly, but found the ending a bit hurried. Like Flashback, I thought the storyline was intriguing and the writing was (mostly) non-intrusive to the tale. But, unfortunately, the resolution to both books happened too quickly for my tastes. I also found the conclusion for both books easily predictable.

Despite any shortcomings, it's rare to come across a well researched, well written biotech thriller. It seems Gary has found a niche for this period of his career.

5 out of 5 stars Gray Matter.......2006-09-12

Braver touches the reader on so many levels. He's unique in the genre, he writes with sensitivity yet he spares no one the gripping drama and blood curdling scenes. Imagine the agony of the sting victim. Gary braver steadily adds the literary competence so missing in the thriller genre. Looking forward to his next novel.

5 out of 5 stars What Matters Most.......2006-05-09

Gray Matter deals with efforts to raise the intelligence of children and the obsession of some parents to put their kids on the fast track of a successful life (best schools, successful careers, high income, etc). Elixir (published right before Gray Matter) involves a drug that can keep us young nearly forever. Middle age (let's face it, those of us in our 40's are technically middle-aged) is the stage of life most attracted to this drug. Flashback (published after Gray Matter) is the story of a drug that can cure Alzheimer's. The elderly are most affected by this breakthrough.

While each book can be read alone as a complete story, if you read them one right after the other, you'll notice a common theme affecting the three stages of life: childhood, the prime of life and old age. That theme is the ageless attraction of forbidden fruit, which in each of these books involves a dangerous scientific or medical breakthrough that is very plausible and can happen in the near future. How far will people go to taste that attractive fruit?

Gray Matter is the saddest of the three books, because it involves the harming of children in the cause of plucking forbidden fruit. You will get to know several children affected by a secret medical procedure that nearly doubles their intelligence and IQ. The procedure has horrible consequences which are slowly revealed to us. In the end of this engrossing suspense novel, you will ask yourself questions about how far you would be willing to go to help your children. Would you rather have a child with an IQ of only 82, yet who sings like an angel? Or would you rather have a child smart enough to get into MIT but at the price of losing the personality and character that made him/her so special to you? Braver writes about ordinary people like you and me who are confronted with these tough questions. In the end, his writing is full of love for family and compassion for the human spirit. This book is worth your time spent reading it.

5 out of 5 stars An All-Nighter!!!.......2006-01-03

What a fantastic read!! When I first picked up this book I thought to myself, "this is a long book, it had better hook me from the first few pages or I know I won't bother". Well, hook me it did!! I literally could not put it down all darn night! I am a voracious reader, I literally will read a book in one or two sittings. I go through an author's books like the dryer goes through socks. I am so happy that I have now discovered what an amazing writer Gary Braver is. His characters could be your neighbor, your best friend, or the guy down the street, they are real. His writing enables us as readers to commiserate with the characters, understand exactly where they're coming from, but keeps us on the edge of our seat because we're not sure where they're going. Nothing is given away, it's tense, mesmerizing and exciting. This book is also different from so many medical thrillers, for me it was a new concept, a new idea, and so interesting. I won't give anything away, I don't want to spoil one minute of the thrilling journey you will take through this book, but believe me when I say, you will NOT be able to put it down. Expect to lose some sleep, let the laundry wash itself (ha!), and the darn husband and kids can cook their own dinner!!! A great escape, and I so look forward to reading each and every one of Gary's books.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2005-09-12

Gary Braver writes a riveting story. This is a page turner and I could not put it down. An excellent read I definitely recommend!

1 out of 5 stars Book is renamed for New edition! Grrrr.......2003-03-10

I ordered Secret of Collecting Girls Series books as well as All About Collecting Girls Series Books, both by John Axe... Well, after ordering both of the books, I found out that Secret of.... is just the first edition. It contains info on Ruth Fielding, Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Beverly Gray, Kay Tracey, Penny Parker and I think Cherry Ames. {I say "I think" because the book got returned, but I know it at least goes up to Penny Parker} Problem is, this EXACT SAME INFORMATION is found in All About Collecting... with the addition of three or four other girls' series books. I felt [disappointed] because the two books are obviously just a first edition and a second edition with some added material. I've never heard of a 2nd edition being RENAMED something else, albeit a similar title. So word to the wise. If you don't care about the other series mentioned in All About (Vicki Barr, Connie Blair, & Dana Girls) then get this book and save a few dollars. But do NOT get them both thinking they are "companion" books as inferred on several web sites.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and eye catching.......2001-08-04

John has put together a book packed with information and beautiful pictures. Confused about the various art covers on Girks' series books? Problem solved. John does an excellent job explaining the different covers and each one is illustrated in beautiful color photographs.

Buy it for the information. Share it for the photographs. The pictures alone make this a great book for the coffee table. Even non collectors will enjoy seeing the beautiful dust jackets from the books they enjoyed as children.

Worth so much more than the price. John presents his material in a straight forward easy to understand format. John's book is a must have for serious collectors, but non collectors will enjoy it just as much.

I bought it, and I love it. The only regret I have is I wish I would have bought it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price for the pictures alone.......2001-02-15

The title of this book may mislead some readers to believe that it covers many girls' series books, when in reality it covers only the following: Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Kay Tracey, Beverly Gray, Penny Parker, and Ruth Fielding. (The subtitle of the book indicates that these series are featured, but it is still not necessarily clear that they are the only series in the book.) That being said, this book is clearly a labor of love by a person who knows what he's talking about. There is intelligent discussion on collecting books, cleaning old books, estimating values, and different formats.

And then... the pictures. This book includes full color photographs of all the book covers in their various incarnations. For instance, on one page are placed the FOUR different covers for Nancy Drew's "The Clue of the Broken Locket." It's fun to see how the covers evolved over the years, and the author offers much historical information about the cover artists, the Stratemeyer Syndicate in general, and the various editions in which the books have been offered. The other series mentioned above are treated in a similar manner. Overall this is an attractively designed book that can give pleasure whether you browse leisurely or read closely. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Too many clues so obviously missed by the good guys........2002-06-11

For a first in the series this was a pretty good book. The characters are likable, we all know a cafe owner/waitress like Millie, we all know a sexist cop like Schultz and we know the divorcee-new career-new single parent Mom like PJ. We, if we are lucky, have not met any serial killers like Pauley Mac, The Dog. Although Dr. PJ Gray is supposed to be a computer whiz psychologist and Leo Schultz is supposed to be a 20 year veteran cop, they miss clues that play, dance, hum and hang before their eyes. The killer stands across the counter from them and hums the "Star Spangled Banner" in the same note he did on the crime scene video, and they don't notice. They discuss the case in detail while eating the food he has prepared for them, and considering he lives on a diet of victim's, brains you would think PJ and Leo would be more careful about who cooks for them.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Stupid for a Psychologist.......2001-10-02

At first I was bored with the "Silence of the Lambs" theme. Then, somehow, I became engaged with PJ and Leo. They did seem like "real" folks...I especially found it refreshing to find a female main character who is not reed thin and actually likes to eat milkshakes, coffeecake and burgers and fries!! But.....was anyone else disturbed at the lack of concern she seemed to have over her home being burgalized and vandalized??? She didn't change the locks? Get a security alarm put in or at least beef up what little security she had (Leo could have helped her there)? I found that highly unrealistic. ANNNNDDDDDD..... she's home all alone after the break-in, and there's a knock on the door. Does she go to the door and ask who is it? No. Does she go to the door and look through the peephole? No. Does she peek out of a curtain? No. What does she do? She stays put and yells, "it's open!"

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Shirley Kennett Gets & Keeps Your Attention Again!.......2000-09-03

Her orignal in her great series! Don't miss her 4th in the series of P. J. written under the name of Avery Morgan titled Act of Betrayal!

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but simplistic. Heroine is questionable........1999-06-29

I enjoyed this book as a good "airplane read." It's short and simplistic and, despite the gory subject material, is mindnumbing enough to make it a good 'time-killer.' It requires no thought on the part of the reader.

What I disliked was the heroine. This deified 'single mom' takes her 12 y.o. son out of state so she can take a lower-paying job because SHE doesn't want to run into her ex and new wife at the market. When her new lower-paying, out-of-state job puts her son in harm's way, she immediately capitulates to her 12 y.o.'s whims and sends him to live with a stranger without ever discussing it with the boy's dad or offering him the opportunity to care for the child. Very nice. I suspect the heroine is a reflection of the author, and it shows in the self-satisfaction the heroine projects.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......1999-03-06

I'm a big fan of suspense, so when a friend told me to check out this book, I got it right away because I'm always looking for new authors. This book blew me away! It is one of the best written, most creative, and most suspenseful books I've read, and I've gone through a lot of them. You can't go wrong here. The main character PJ Gray is a real woman, not a cardboard creation, and her sidekick Leo Schultz deserves a series of his own. Kennett provides a view into the mind of one of the most interesting and evil villains I've come across.

5 out of 5 stars Bizarre yet very entertaining.......2007-02-19

The title about says it all. The author definitely keeps your full attention while you are listening to these assorted strange tales. He brings the limits of human imagination to you in an easily understood presentation that will have you thinking twice about your future interactions with others, especially strangers. It can become quite scary at times as you find yourself imagining that you are one of the various victims in these short tales. A recommended addition to anyones audio library.

5 out of 5 stars DARK LOTUS.......2001-06-24

This Cryptic Collection of Stories is as Scary As Hell. I would recomend it to any Scary Story fan. It makes it better than reading the book caus you can enjoy it in the Dark. Warning: THIS IS VERY SCARY. Stories like Sometimes They Come Back, The BoogyMan, and especialy Jerusalems Lot will freak you out.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining book on tape.......2000-07-09

I listened to the 5 stories today and found it very entertaining. I have seen the movie The Lawnmower Man and it was quite different. But this version was real good. I liked Sometimes they come back the best. Quitters Inc, The ledge and The mangler were all very good as well. This is my 1st King exposure to his horror stories and it was all I expected it to be. I recommend it highly. Narrator John Glover is very good too.

5 out of 5 stars John Glover is great!.......2000-06-21

This was just as good, or maybe even better than reading the book! The things that made it a lot better were the reader, John Glover, he was so great, and the sound effects. I was listening to Lawnmower Man, and I didn't remember it was that scary! This audio book should be heard after you read Night Shift, or if you aren't planning to. All the short stories are guaranteed to give you sleepless nights, and it is a high recommendation!

Book Description

Looking to put a twinkle in your wrinkle? A little rage in your age? We've got just the book for you! Photographer Bob Elsdale has found an extremely unlikely source of inspiration for this irresistible book on the joys of aging¿some enormous but very agile elephants.

Even if getting older is no day at the beach, that's just where Elsdale's elephants engage in some surprising behavior. The playful pachyderms frolic in the surf, knock around beach balls, lounge in the sun, play tic-tac-toe, and even enjoy catching waves on surfboards.

So what does all this have to do with empowering the elders among us? Lots, as it turns out. The simple but inspired text is full of wry reminders that there are lots of advantages to getting older and endless opportunities to enjoy them. After all, when you've reached a certain age, "No one gets suspicious when you fool around," according to Elsdale's elephants. And, "everywhere is memory lane."

A historic herd of baby boomers begins turning 60 this year. And even if they sometimes feel a little weary, they're still young at heart. After all, it's not the body that counts¿it's the gray matter that matters.

3 out of 5 stars A 5 star photography book or a 1 star book on aging?.......2006-10-19

This book, "Gray Matter: Why It's Good to Be Old!," by Bob Elsdale, may make you crazy. The title, the two pages of text noting that Baby Boomers are aging, and the bonus magnifying/reading lens (included) make you think this is a book on aging and memory (note the elephant theme... they never forget).

HOWEVER, the 30 or so photographs are not related to aging and memory. A picture of an elephant on a surfboard? An elephant playing a bass fiddle? Driving a car on the beach? This seems to be a case of Seinfieldian "New Yorker" humor.... "I just don't get it."

BUT, Bob Elsdale has produced an extraordinary collection of photographs of elephants at the sea. With Photoshop, he's added kites, and chess, and fishing poles. Eerie, yes. Exploitative, perhaps. Riveting, certainly. The detail and composition of the photographs are amazing. You will be torn between gasping at the quality of the pictures while trying to understand the intent of the composer.

Three stars because of the hybrid nature of a 5 star x 1 star book.

5 out of 5 stars Ingenious Way to Present Office Politics.......2007-02-11

A story presented in comic book form that follows an ordinary Joe (named Gray)in uniting his company's division to make changes before the division is eliminated. Tremendous wisdom presented in thinking about others viewpoints and dealing with sensitive (ie aggressive) egos in getting things done. Humorous and engaging -it's a great way to introduce those who are entering the work world or the world weary who have forgotten the subtleties it takes to motivate others. Questionaires and questions, specific recommendations about what you can do to help with sales or cost savings.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY NEW PM.......2005-10-26

"I never really wanted to be a PM but the company recognized my efforts in supporting Widgets XYZ and therefore they decided to promote me by becoming a PM!!" I am sure most of u ended up like that. Well I certainly did. I will tell you that this job is not easy and especially if u are not an IT background PM, u r in trouble!

This book believe it or not I used to read in between trips to Italy before I took this new job I am in. Forget PMI (well don't forget but ...) this book will give you're the instant PM Adernialin u need and it will also manage your expectations of how things should happen. It ahs a people side in this book which most other techs books fail to see. It was allot of fun to read. I have been 12 months on the job now and I think I like it now!

1 out of 5 stars who are they trying to kid?.......2004-09-25

Gray matters is disappointing in many respects. First, the cartooning is crude and not up to standards set by syndicated strips. Second, there's not a single laugh in the whole book -- this is no Dilbert. Third, the advice is common sense to the point of being patronizing -- it features such brilliant insights as "listen to people." Wow, who'd ever think of doing that? Finally, several character actions are highly unethical and could get you in hot water if you did the same, such as breaking into a co-worker's computer, or moonlighting without your boss's knowledge at a customer company strictly to get inside information. You want to talk lawsuit? Read "The Dilbert Principle" instead -- its insights are hilarious and telling.

5 out of 5 stars A book for even those who "know it all".......2004-02-04

I approached this book with an attitude of "I know this content already," "I could have written this book". . . . But a few pages into the book, I realized I was learning.

The content is surprisingly complete. When skimming the Table of Contents, the topics did not seem comprehensive. But after reading this book, the important things were covered; including sensitive areas that are usually not discussed.

I appreciate that much of the content is in comic strip format. I know, I know, this doesn't sound good. But I have so many books that I've started and stopped because I don't have time to read it all. So it's very gratifying to get through the content of the book in one evening.

In summary, I learned some important stuff from this book and know that I can return to this book for reminders and details. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great Tips on How to succedd in your career.......2004-01-26

This is the first business book I've read that teach you great lessons about how to succeed in business and in your career in a humoristic manner.

It references stuff like the 8 commandments for selling people on your ideas, and the 7 Deadly Workplace Sins and how to overcome them.

This is definitely a must read book.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting book of lists for a family who has children.......2001-10-02

I believe one of the most important thing you can do for your child is to communicate and spend time with him/her frequently to develop a strong and healthy bond. Some of the lists are about effective discipline, communication, ways to love your child, activities for the whole family, getting to know your teen and lots more.
