Inspired perhaps by this summer's blockbuster film adaptation of Carl Sagan's Contact, a handful of nonfiction works have been reissued, all of which explore the possibility that we are not alone. C.D.B. Bryan's Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind--an engrossing work written for those skeptical about extraterrestrial visitors--is a compilation of testimonials and interviews about alien abductions. Bryan's sources, interviewed at a five-day academic conference held at M.I.T., include psychiatrists, researchers, science writers, "ufologists," and abductees, including John Mack, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard and author of Abduction: Human Encounters with Aliens. In addition, Close Encounters includes transcripts from hypnotherapy sessions with self-described "abductees." Bryan, journalist and author of Friendly Fire (1976), blends a reporter's objectivity with great compassion for the traumatized victims of these mysterious and horrific violations.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive historical overview of a complex subject........2006-08-04

C.D.B. Bryan's journalistic report of his attendance at a huge UFO & alien abduction conference in the early 1990's held at M.I.T. is a clearly written and fair minded look at a complicated and often controversial subject.

Despite the fact that most recent polls indicate that the majority of Americans & indeed the world believe "we're not alone", there are many who refuse to accept or are fearful of discussing the alien abduction phenomenon. Similarly, even when UFO enthusiasts come to agreement about various elements within their own community, there are breaks in the ranks in terms of everything from the effective use of hypnotic regression to the incredibly disturbing notion of alien/human hybrids being harvested.

It can all be dizzyingly confusing and even discouraging for the newly interested and so Bryan's book remains one of the more well organized and objective treatments on the subject. The author never tries to sway the reader in any direction. He stays steadfast to his job of reporting what he saw and trying to make some sense of it without being judgmental or partial to a particular mindset.

In-depth, informative, solidly entertaining and yes at times even patently unbelievable, but it's never boring nor a waste of your time. This would be a great starting point for the novice researcher and a great reference book for the seasoned UFO devotee. I subtracted one star for lack of photos, since a few photos of conference participants would have been a welcome addition and personal touch to this otherwise excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Where do we come in?.......2005-07-08

This book added to my suspician of a government cover up, opened the pandoras box to Alien abduction, government cover-up, military technology, Similarities between everyone abductee. Theories on all of this and more kept me reading this book cover to cover. Skeptics that want to remain skeptical should not read this book. If you have a closed mind but dont want it to be pried open do not read this book. However anyone else should definitely pick up a copy. Every question I had became answered and questions I never asked were asked and answered. It blows your mind at what could be and what is going on out there. With the help of this book I have come to believe that the government is hostile toward whatever it is that IS out there. We had no part in deciding their welcome, who knows what is to come.

4 out of 5 stars Read alone at night for the full effect!.......2004-09-28

I am nearing the end of this book and have found it incredibly interesting and just as frightening!

I was skeptical about the reports of alien abductions until I started reading this. Now it takes me a while to pluck up the courage to turn off the lights when I stop reading each night!

A definite must-read for all you skeptics!

5 out of 5 stars First rate read.......2004-07-31

If this book is fiction, it stands up all the way. If not its a bonus, but a pretty scary one if we`re under that much control. What do I think? I underwent a total paradigm shift every time I opened the book so perhaps the question is unfair.

2 out of 5 stars First half is good. Second half is silly........2003-06-17

The books starts out well. The author is attending a conference at MIT about abductions by flying saucers. He's skeptical but respectful. He introduces you to the experts, the scholars, and the abductees. So far, so good.

But in the second half, he gives you LENGTHY descriptions of hypnosis sessions with a pair of abductees --- two women whose stories start off where you'd expect and then get crazier as they progress.

Actually, "crazy" is the wrong word. "Implausible" or "transparent" would be better. The two women need to add a little extra juice to their stories to keep your attention, so they add more alien beings, more strange events, and new places to explore.

This book would be a useful addition to the dozen-or-so books on UFO adbuctions if the second half was dropped. As I read it, my mind changed from skeptical and entertained (why DO so many people say they were abducted by flying saucers?) to cringing with embarassment (the Nordic E.T. in the giant cowboy hat was too much).

I have been reading books by Bruce Coville since I was in second grade, and I think that he is a great author for children. Now, this book certainly wasn't his best, but it was up there. I would recommend this to any child who has an interest in science fiction.

Hi. I'm in third grade...and this book is what our teacher read to us from 12:45 to 1:00 everyday after lunch. It's a hilarious story about a boy trading bodies with a funny looking alien. I doubt it's true...but who knows?

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR ALL AGES. IT IS FUNNY AND STRANGE AT THE
SAME TIME. I REALLY RECAMEND ALL OF THE HELP! SERIES.

5 out of 5 stars Help! I'm Trapped In An Alien's Body.......2003-01-22

Jake Sherman switched bodies with an alien. The alien is a funny looking one, a dorky alien, from a planet where aliens sit around and eat junk food all day long. That sounds like a pretty cool life to jake, but Jake has two choices. Would he want to be a 98 pound kid or is he really going to stay like a dork?I think the book was great. You will have to read the book to find how this story will end.

5 out of 5 stars HELP! I'M TRAPPED IN AN ALIEN'S BODY.......2003-01-22

The reason why I picked this book is because the title and the cover interested me. Also when I first read the back I knew it would be a good book and it was a good book. The reason why I think it is a good book is because when Jake Sherman traded bodys with a real live alien it was very weird because I never knew that a kid could trade with an alien.

Luckily it has an exciting ending. I enjoyed reading this book.

ISBN 0671798332 - The Covilles do it again. Every time I pick up a book with this pair's names on it, my expectations are not high - they always make me regret my assumptions!

Rod Allbright's summer is off to a terrible start: his cousin Elspeth is being dumped on them because her parents want to "get away". Obviously, they want to get away from Elspeth, who is quick with a negative word on every subject and every person she meets. Desperate to get away from her, too, Rod tells his mother he's going for a walk. Of course, his mother makes him take along Elspeth. Out of spite, since he's basically forced to take her, he wears his new sneakers despite the fact that he knows his mother doesn't want him to.

In the field behind the house, everything takes a sudden turn. The kids fall into a huge footprint, which is scary enough. It gets scarier when the foot that made it comes back - and the owner of that foot kidnaps the cousins! Taken to Dimension X to be used as bait for Grakkar, the commander of the Ferkel, and his crew, Rod and Elspeth have to work together to survive until rescue arrives. When it does, trouble really begins. Their kidnapper, Smorkus Flinders, has far bigger plans than they could ever have imagined and he must be stopped.

This is the second book in the series (the first was Aliens Ate My Homework), but it's not 100% necessary to have read the first one. It might help, since the story DOES refer to the previous tale, but it is possible to read this one without ever having read the first. Of course, the cliffhanger in this one is destined to have you looking for the next one!

I liked the references to Dr Suess (Thing One and Thing Two) and the classic The Sound of Music. It had me reading closer than usual to find other hidden gems. Probably the best part of the book is the lesson Rod learns about why Elspeth is the way she is - and it isn't because she's just a rotten person.

5 out of 5 stars smart, witty book.......2006-05-05

Have you ever been transported to another dimension? Do you know what it feels like to be shoved into a forty foot monsters ear and eat kispa-dinka evernight? If not, then i suggest you read this book to find out more about this crazy life. During his adventures, Rod and his bratty cousin elspet are captured by smorkus flinders, a giant alien seeking revenge on Rods alien friends. When rod is reunited with his friends in dimension X, they face a whole new problem. How to get out. Throughout their encounters they meet up with crazy shapeshifters, a ting wongovia, and many other strange things. In the end Rod is enlarged and put up in a battle againse Smorkus Flinders and wins. He then finds out that the reason his dad had left them is because he was an alien. This book is a very good book, but an easy read. it is wild, wacky , and witty. it is well written and should be enjoyed by children of all ages.

The first thing i liked about this book was the overall obscurity and wackiness of the settings and characters. I mean, really, whos ever heard of a ting wongovia? It was characters like these that brought the imaginative aspect to the book. This book really provokes your mind to really think about what some of the things might look like and what it must be like to live there. This as a whole is what makes this book intersting.

Another thing that pleased me while reading this book was the vocabulary that was used to describe the scenes shown. While the settings were vivid, the vocabulary really helped bring alot of the settings to life almost. For example, the author used almost child-like vocabulary to describe this part of dimension X: "The sky looked like boiling purple water, the ground like a pot of overcooked macaroni." Sentences like these are peppered throughout the book, and really bring it to life.

The third and final thing that amused me about this book is the sheer simplicity, but also very complex plotline to the story. The book goes from very high points to very low points, and ends with a wonderful climax and a resolution with a big twist. This book is an easy read, so i dont reccomend it highly for adults, but the average high elementary through middle school age will enjoy its childish charm.

Overall, "I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X" by Bruce Coville is an intersting read, full of surprises, wackiness, and over cooked macaroni. This book should be enjoyed by children of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars I Left My Sneakers In Demension X.......2006-05-02

I thought this book was very adventurous. All of the characters had their own great personality and unique look. The settings changed through-out the book. All places were mysterious and you never knew what wierd thing would happen to the characters! There were many main characters of the book. The most important character was Rod. All of the CRAZY events happend to either Rod or his little cousin Elspeth. Even if these two kids don't get along....they still get through this scary time together. Since Elspeth is pain (according to Rod), Rod learns that Elspeth can be nice. Also, Rod gets...oh yea, can't tell you!! Do you want to know what happens next? Read the book I Left My Sneakers In Demension X!!! It was a thriller!!!!!~Kerry:-)

A fine book. Very well written. A little less humorous than the Rod Allbright Alien Adventure Series, but that did not ruin the book. A perfect read for 4-6 grade. I was enthralled by the way Coville created a group of great characters, each with a distinctive personality, and each easy to love-or hate.

One thing that I really liked about this book was that it had a language different than the other lanugages that you see in sci-fi. The language in question used bodily functions other than the standard speaking.

It's about a young, purple alien named Pleskit that is taken along by his father to Earth as part of a trade mission. Pleskit is enrolled in a public school, and, thanks to some wrong information about how Earthlings always speak the truth, Pleskit succeeds in making most of the kids at school hate him.

Except for Tim Tompkins, that is, resident alien enthusiast. He's psyched out of his mind to see a real, live alien and wants to make friends with Pleskit, but something always comes up- like, Pleskit seemingly attacking another boy at school, for example.

So Tim forms a plan to meet Pleskit by hiding in his 'personal needs' room (a.k.a. bathroom) and hoping to make a good impression. Surprisingly, he does, and is invited to Pleskit's house.

Tim's excited, of course, and Pleskit is outraged to hear that his database was tampered with (the whole Earthlings lie thing). They decide to scope out their number one suspect's room, but they see him coming and quickly duck into Mikta-Makta-Mookta's room (Pleskit's father's secretary). There, they discover that she has something that shouldn't be in her room...

I really liked this book, and it's great for kids that are in fifth and sixth grades.

4 out of 5 stars Response to Lit for my Seventh Grade Advanced English Class.......2004-04-20

The book I was a Sixth Grade Alien, by Bruce Coville, is about Pleskit, an alien that comes to Earth with his father, whom they call the fatherly one, and his great fatherly one, or his grandfather. Pleskit comes here for his father, who is the ambassador. When he comes to Earth, he meets Tim. Tim is an alien loving kid that lives on Earth who tries to become Pleskit's friend, and in the end they do become friends. Tim's class makes fun of him, but he still tries to become Pleskit's friend.
I was confused in the beginning of the book. I didn't understand why every chapter was told by a different person telling their part of the story. Towards the end, I started to understand why Coville did this. He did this so that you, the reader, could understand what each person felt and thought about what was going on. Pleskit, being an alien, had different thoughts and different ways of looking at things than Tim did. "From what she tells me, everyone on this planet likes to pretend that he or she is unique and different" (Coville 13). Pleskit went to an Earth training module, but I guess they didn't tell him everything about the people on Earth.
I really liked the parts in the book when Tim followed Pleskit around trying to become his friend, and when they finally did meet, they got along. I was happy to read this because at the beginning of the story Tim doesn't have many friends and then he has a friend and I am happy for him. Everyone needs a friend that they can count on. Tim finally got this. "Pleskit. I've got to make friends with him before he thinks we all hate him"(Coville 82).
I was confused at the end about how Mikta-makta-mookta and Harr-giss were trying to break down Pleskit's training modules to make him mess up and have to go back home. Was this to make his father's job go down the drain or just put it on a rocky start? "'Senator Hargis is an alien'" (Coville 159).
I really enjoyed this book. I am like Tim in some ways. I love aliens and the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I have seen it about as many times as he has. I think anyone that likes aliens or has an interest in science fiction and/or myths would like this book. I was a Sixth Grade Alien is for kids in grades five through seven. It was a pretty easy book to read. I enjoyed every part and the end kept me on my toes. I didn't want to put it down at times.

    Book Description

    IT'S A STICKY SITUATION!

Pleskit's quest to sample all things earthling -- especially earthling foods -- inevitably leads him to...peanut butter. He adores it. There's only one problem: He has an allergic reaction to the stuff that ends up making him feel incredibly romantic.

Before long, the purple alien is chasing girls around the playground, trying to kiss them. He gets a slap in the face, which snaps him back to reality. But the damage has been done. The school is in an uproar, and unless Tim and Pleskit can find a way to convince Principal Grand that it's not really Pleskit's fault, the world's first alien student may be looking for a new classroom -- on a new planet!

As in the first three books our yong heros get mixed up in a sticky situation that will keep you glued to the pages. I am one of the "I was a Sixth Grade Alien" colletion's biggest fans and this was one of my favs. I hope that you will enjoy the book as much as i did!

5 out of 5 stars The best book in the series so far!.......2000-11-28

I'm a big fan of Bruce Coville, (especially the "Sixth Grade Alien" books), and I must say, this is one of his best books yet. (Of course, I haven't read a lot of the newer ones, since I haven't had a chance to buy them yet.) A funny yet believeable plot, and also, Linnsy plays a more active part than usual, which is good. (She's one of my favorite characters.)

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Over Peanut Butter.......2000-06-07

I LOVED this book it is very funny, and I couldn't put it down. It has many of the same characters as in Bruce Covile's I was a Sixth Grade Alien #1. In this story Pleskit tries a new food from Earth- Peanut Butter. Whenever Pleskit eats Peanut Butter he becomes girl crazy. This causes a great deal of trouble in the school and almost ruins the mission. Can Pleskit and Tim save the mission? Read and find out. You won't be disappointed.

An all-original collection of twenty-seven stories by some of today's most inventive authors about alien encounters with humans-from the aliens' perspective.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Human nature from an alien point of view..........2005-06-05

I, Alien collects 27 original stories all drafted from the point of view of aliens, dealing with the odd and occasionally ogresome creature known as man. What could have been just another sci-fi anthology is entertaining and highly original. Some of the stories are pure magic. Diary of a Galactic `Émigré by Laura Resnick kicks the volume off and is laugh out loud funny. Me by Mike Resnik points out that god may not be exactly what man thinks. You be Stephen Leigh is haunting, especially for those of us who read anthologies all the time. Anakoinosis by Tobias Bucknell makes us wonder what man's nature really is, and how we would fit into the nature of other planets.

I am NOT a fan of sci-fi, normally, but I am the fan of a well written short story and this anthology is full of them. This is yet another delightful anthology by DAW, and well worth a read.

        Book Description

How the Other Half Works solves the riddle of America's contemporary immigration puzzle: why an increasingly high-tech society has use for so many immigrants who lack the basic skills that today's economy seems to demand. In clear and engaging style, Waldinger and Lichter isolate the key factors that explain the presence of unskilled immigrants in our midst. Focusing on Los Angeles, the capital of today's immigrant America, this hard-hitting book elucidates the other side of the new economy, showing that hiring is finding not so much "one's own kind" but rather the "right kind" to fit the demeaning, but indispensable, jobs many American workers disdain.
