And in a hidden grove, a familiar figure slowly awakens to find himself the captive of an animated, headless corpse.Mercilessly cutting through Taglian intrigues, Lady appears to be growing stronger every day. 3 out of 5 stars Adequate sequel, last book for 6 years.......2006-08-15

spoilers may follow

This book picks up right after the events in Shadow games, where we learn that once again dead isn't dead in the black company universe, with numerous Taken reappearing, including the decapitated Soulcatcher.

Viewpoint is written mainly from that of the Lady, with smaller parts by secondary characters, of which Croaker is now one. Plot involves more deific mysticism than previous novels, including a death-goddess intent on using the Lady for nefarious ends.

Adequate story, which he then dropped for 6 years.

4 out of 5 stars Mama Don't Allow No Foot Stomping Here........2006-08-11

After four volumes in which she has played a major, is somewhat silent, part the inevitable has occurred. With Croaker missing in action after the disastrous battle for Degajore and presumed dead, Lady has taken over. Welcome to Dreams of Steel -- Lady's own book. Once a cruel empress and once of the most powerful wizards of the north she is the now leader of that part of the Black Company that did not get trapped in the city. It is up to her to rally and bring the battle back to the shadowmasters.

Just as important as the struggle for Degajore is the introduction of several new characters. In fact, a whole sect of new characters -- the Stranglers, who are more than a little reminiscent of the thuggee. Instead of Kali their goddess is called Kina, but she is just as many-armed and malevolent as her equivalent in this world. Somewhere she sleeps while her followers dedicate their kills to her and work to bring about the Year of Skulls. Now one of the leaders of this sect, Narayan Singh, has attached himself to Lady. She sees an opportunity to use Kina's followers to further the goals of the Black Company regardless of whether the Stranglers might have an agenda of their own.

Nothing in this volume is as it seems. The story picks up some twists that are unusual, even for a Cook novel. Enough to keep the story interesting and convolute. Followers of the series will actually find little difference between Lady as narrator and Croaker. Her established character isn't one that would come naturally to being an annalist, so Cook defaults to his regular style. The result is that this volume works as well as its predecessors and has none of the weaknesses of the next few narrators. I found the book enjoyable, although the end is a little chaotic and sudden.

5 out of 5 stars Biased Praise.......2005-08-14

Love the Black Company, plain and simple. If you're going to read one, you've got to read them all and in order. If you haven't read the books prior to this one in the series, you need to. And if those don't convince you to read the entire series, there is nothing I can say in this review that will.

3 out of 5 stars Dreams of Steel (spoiler).......2003-07-09

Lady, now in command of the Black Company, gets drawn into a Thuggee-like cult. Meanwhile, Croaker ends up in the company of Soulcatcher...

Like the books before it, this has a refreshingly straightforward tone and plenty happens. I was frustrated by the lack of increased depth in some of the secondary characters, especially the Swan-Mather-Blade group. And I never felt I had a grasp on what was going on in Longshadow's head. Lady's POV generally works pretty well, though she's awfully slow to realize she's pregnant; the reader is hundreds of pages ahead.

1 out of 5 stars Enough.......2002-04-22

I am tired of The Black Company and their constant fight for "right". I never really liked the lady. She is just another bad woman turned good and Croaker is another quiet guy turned bad. The rest of the characters are boring or you dont know anything about them.

We all know that the survivors of the black company will ride into the sunset with "the golden child" and Soulcatcher will be defeated. All books end that way. Why can't true evil win sometimes?

Shadowmasters= Taken. Not much of a shock. Althought it would be nice to see The Black Company defeated by someone different. I love Soulcatcher. Finally someone who is evil. Unfortunately we all know what happens to evil people; they make stupid decisions and are defeated by the person with the least amount of power. The killing of the evil person is such a let down after the build up to the end.

I expected more.

5 out of 5 stars Time to Face Yourself, Sleel.......2004-11-06

Ok, you've read the Matador Trilogy and loved it (I hope). But it's not over. The Matador's have finished their prime mission in life but now what? "Black Steel", "The Albino Knife" and "Brother Death" are the continuing stories of Sleel, Emile and Bork.

In "Black Steel", our friend Sleel is as full of arrogance as ever. But life has, perhaps, gotten a little boring - not that he would ever admit that. Along comes a new contract as a bodyguard for an old thief - Jersey Reason. Fine. No big sweat for a man like Sleel. But two challenges are building on two distant planets for unsuspecting Sleel. First, the Lord of the "House of Black Steel" wants the thief dead and will let absolutely nothing stand in his way. On another planet a young women, with ties to the Matadors, is looking for her "perfect student". These four characters meet and the result (not to give too much away) nearly kills Sleel and crushes his ego, utterly.

The second half of the book is the story of Sleel finding himself (maybe), falling in love (maybe) and facing several of his greatest fears (definitely).

In the previous Matador books Sleel was an amusing character but didn't really add a great deal to the story. Many times he was simply a comical break in the story. In "Black Steel" all that changes. Sleel, it is discovered, is a person of great depth, high honor and deep pain. I particularly liked the part of the book that introduced Sleel's parents. If ever there were two people who should not have had children it's these two. Sleel's stone cold pain from trying to get through to his parents will make you want to put the book down and stare off into the distance.

I've read this book at least half a dozen times and lent it to numerous friends. Needless to say, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars What a book!.......1997-12-04

I'm the kind of person that reads a lot and has learned to put down books to do other things. I just couldn't do it with this book! I opened the book to start reading it and I couldn't close it until I was finished. Then I went back and read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty Bang for the Bucks.......1997-10-01

Before reading any book one must consider one's expectations of it. Black steel was, for me, a book I would read during my 30 minute commute to school. I can honestly say that I enjoyed it immensely. The writing is smooth (if simple), The characterization sufficient and the action superb. What more do you need ?

Book Description

Dion-Healer, also called Wolfwalker, dared to try to unlock the secrets of aliens. Her courage was rewarded with their fury, and she was nearly destroyed. Now, desperate to put distance between herself and the fate that awaits her, Dion rages against the wolves as much as she rages against the world.

But she cannot elude those who seek her: the Gray Ones, who grow restless with her absence; the brother searching the wilderness for his Wolfwalker twin; and the people of her homeland, who are relying on her to secure their future with her new knowledge. And there is one other: a distant warrior unable to resist the mysterious force that summons him to find a woman whose face he has never seen, whose name he has never heard.

As the forces of destiny converge on Dion, she must fight to keep her secrets safe--secrets that could change Wolfwalker, warrior, and their very world forever.

3 out of 5 stars 3 and 1/2 Stars For Good Writing But There's Still Something Missing.......2007-09-03

"Silver Moons, Black Steel" is the book that is the sequel to "Wolf's Bane", and "Grayheart is the book forthcoming, or "Wolf In Night", whichever works. This book is longer than the last, but length isn't everything. You soon come to notice that the book is nothing more but a set of journies from three indivdual POV's, a very long drawn-out journey for the three to come together at the end.

This review will probably contain spoilers, so...

Dion, the Master Healer and Wolfwalker, is still finding herself. Now, at the end of "Wolf's Bane" she claimed to find what she sought, but you never know with Dion. She is haunted by this unknown man who is a raider named Talon. Talon is also haunted by Dion by the wolves, and Talon realises that he has more of a life than with his father Drovic and his raiders.

This book should have been the thing that saved 'Wolf's Bane' but it barely did. The ending where you find out who Talon is would have brought light to the readers and Dion, but even in the Epologue there's more angst and drama that clouded this book throughout. Talon's raider band that decided to follow him in the end to sort out their lives and make a new one of themselves had plently of room for development or character differences, but even that was a failiure. The raiders Weed, Harare, Sojourn, Ki...they all sound the same, and they have no differences except some habits that they do, and their appearances. They have different fighting styles that are never tested, and they might as well be one person. There were some raiders that were unique, like Al, the only one with red hair, but I noticed a mistake in the book.

In the beginning, Morley, a raider, was killed during a failed robbery attempt yet he appears later on in the book. Something to keep in mind.

Granted, this book was fun to read, and as always, Tara is a very good writer, but it didn't bring anything new to the table.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2004-01-27

I absolutely love the Wolfwalker series. In this book, the reader really gets to focus on the characters. I couldn't put this book down. The suspense and nearly fevered pace keep the reader going. It's something to read again and again. READ THIS BOOK! (after you read the previous ones) Another winner from Tara K. Harper!

5 out of 5 stars Silver Moons, Black Steel.......2003-12-01

This book is so cool. It has adventure, heart-filled moments, and a few laughs. You may want 2 read the pre-sequels 2 this book, or it may not make sence. It has the same characters, and alot more adventures. I loved this book, and I highly suggest it.

4 out of 5 stars Story answers some questions, but..........2002-04-13

This is the 6th book in the Wolfwaker series, and is a worthy addition to the series. I felt conflicted as I read the book, because the underlying thread of this series has been following Dion's adventures, yet the real focus is on a new character named Talon, a raider. It's an adjustment to shift perspectives, and see life through the eyes of a raider since we've grown to dispise them as much as Dion. I felt myself wanting to find out more about Dion throughout the novel, and hoping that the story would shift back to Dion's perspective. Still, I found the story engaging, and couldn't put the book down...

It looks like Tara Harper may be ready to move away from Dion while staying within the same world. I only wish Tara would give us more information on some of the secondary characters like Rhom, Tehana, Gamon, and Gray Hishn. I love the Wolfwalker series, but I wonder how many books Tara has left in her that adds to the legend of Dion...

5 out of 5 stars the missing book.......2001-11-29

here it is the book that was skiped in the series.
It fills in the missing time before Ember Dione's girl is born.

This book was amazing...It had me turning pages until the wee hours of the morning because i wanted to find out who was hunting her through the wolf bond and why.

Dion is suffering from many personal losts and she is trying to hide from all the people who are making demands on her life. The Elders who want her to scout and heal for them, the Wolves who want her to keep her promise to rid them of the plague that haunts them, and the mysterious hunter who she can feel through the pack song.

Like all of Harper's books, i was drawn into the story and could feel the stress and pain that all the characters felt....especially Dion's.

This is a series i can read over and over again and it will never get old. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

5 out of 5 stars A reminder to wear your selt belt!.......2007-06-27

As a vintage car enthusiast, looking at all the crumpled old cars shown in "Crash!" that were once beautiful sculptures is fascinating though a bit unsettling. Some photos leave the viewer wondering how the car could have been twisted that way or left positioned so strangely. Fortunately, information on some crashes was available to the author. The book is a quick read and is at the very least a reminder to fasten your selt belt and drive safely or else become the subject of a sequel!

Expect this to be just as good as every Prima Book. Quality.

2 out of 5 stars Only good as a "walkthrough".......2005-04-20

This is a good "walkthrough" in that it lays out all the maps in the game, and points out where you should go or what you should do next if you're lost or stuck. However, this walkthrough fails as a "strategy guide" for its lack of strategies. Sure, it's got some tips for certain battles, but it's of no help when it comes to raising characters. It doesn't tell you if the characters in the game has a maximum level, what are the level requirements for each of the skills, how much skill points does each level of a skill costs, or how many more skillpoints will you receive as your character's level increases. These are all vital data a first-timer needs to know in order to create sucessful characters, and none of that is in this guide. In regard to characters and skills, this guide provides absolutely nothing beyond what is already revealed in the manual that comes with the game. What's the use of knowing who you're supposed to beat up next if you don't know how to build your character to get that job done? This guide does reveal hard-to-find secrets, but its lack of character development data also makes its secrets coverage incomplete (as for hidden chars). Overall, the values of this guide lies only in its maps and secret revelations. To me, it's only value is in the secrets, for I don't think it's that hard to find your way in the game. If you think a few secrets in an otherwise unpopular console game and some maps to guide your way in this game are worth ten dollars (or more), then this walkthrough's for you.

      Book Description

Thousands of African Americans poured into northwest Indiana in the 1920s dreaming of decent-paying jobs and a life without Klansmen, chain gangs, and cotton. Black Freedom Fighters in Steel: The Struggle for Democratic Unionism by Ruth Needleman adds a new dimension to the literature on race and labor. It tells the story of five men born in the South who migrated north for a chance to work the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the steel mills. Individually they fought for equality and justice; collectively they helped construct economic and union democracy in postwar America. George Kimbley, the oldest, grew up in Kentucky across the street from the family who had owned his parents. He fought with a French regiment in World War I and then settled in Gary, Indiana, in 1920 to work in steel. He joined the Steelworkers Organizing Committee and became the first African American member of its full-time staff in 1938. The youngest, Jonathan Comer, picked cotton on his father's land in Alabama, stood up to racism in the military during World War II, and became the first African American to be president of a basic steel local union. This is a book about the integration of unions, as well as about five remarkable individuals. It focuses on the decisive role of African American leaders in building interracial unionism. One chapter deals with the African American struggle for representation, highlighting the importance of independent black organization within the union. Needleman also presents a conversation among two pioneering steelworkers and current African American union leaders about the racial politics of union activism.

          Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "black plate carbon steel tin mill products" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.
