This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr
Book Description
Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

One of the best places to start.......2007-09-07
This book is a great resource for those who wonder if they may have some issues with ADD and ADHD (actually the same diagnosis) I originally bought this book to figure myself out (and subsequently saw clues to my mother's behavior all these years). WHen my youngest was diagnosed with ADHD, I re-read it to get the perspective of a child's struggle with ADD. Essential reading.
Do you question what ADD is and whether you or someone you love has ADD?.......2007-08-20
This book can change your life. If you read this book, and you see your life history/story, maybe you should find out a little more about ADD and yourself. Or if you read this book and you see your husband, wife or child, this can be a first step in answering many questions.
The classic for ADD information.......2007-08-18
I love this book, and have bought several copies over the years for newly diagnosed friends, etc. It is concise, clear and not overly stuffy. It doesn't throw a pity party like some books about disabilities do, and offers a diagnostic criteria, as well as coping skills, medical links, and resources listed in the back. A must read if you or anyone you love has ADD, or ADHD.
The BEST........2007-06-20
The absolute best book out there for an introduction to ADD. The structure of the book is perfectly managable for an ADDer without being condescendingly superficial or taking on a tone of talking to children, like some of these books do. I'd also recommend it to anyone who has friends or family who either doubt the existence of or (just don't know much about) ADD.
Check out Hallowell's "Delivered" for more coping mechanisms, and info on treatment, therapy and medication.
very helpful.......2007-06-17
If you wish to become more informed on the topic of ADD and ADHD,then this book is a "must read". The format is easy to read and understand. The reader can identify with one or more of the many examples and scenarios outlined in the book. I found it to be extremely helpful in understanding what ADD is really all about and what it feels like for my daughter to live with ADD.
In addition, I now recognize symptoms of adult ADD as well.

Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.
Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there's even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick Jennings
Book Description
In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Widely recognized as the classic in the field, the book has sold more than a million copies. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder–all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated. In this new book, Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey build on the breakthroughs of Driven to Distraction to offer a comprehensive and entirely up-to-date guide to living a successful life with ADD.
As Hallowell and Ratey point out, “attention deficit disorder” is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds. Tailored expressly to ADD learning styles and attention spans, Delivered from Distraction provides accessible, engaging discussions of every aspect of the condition, from diagnosis to finding the proper treatment regime. Inside you’ll discover
• whether ADD runs in families
• new diagnostic procedures, tests, and evaluations
• the links between ADD and other conditions
• how people with ADD can free up their inner talents and strengths
• the new drugs and how they work, and why they’re not for everyone
• exciting advances in nonpharmaceutical therapies, including changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle
• how to adapt the classic twelve-step program to treat ADD
• sexual problems associated with ADD and how to resolve them
• strategies for dealing with procrastination, clutter, and chronic forgetfulness
ADD is a trait, a way of living in the world. It only becomes a disorder when it impairs your life. Featuring gripping profiles of patients with ADD who have triumphed, Delivered from Distraction is a wise, loving guide to releasing the positive energy that all people with ADD hold inside. If you have ADD or care about someone who does, this is the book you must read.

If only..........2007-08-29
This is one of those books that is both a gift... and very upsetting. - - When I was coming up, the terms ADD and ADHD were just becoming popular... only they were becoming so popular a lot of people were having trouble taking them seriously. - - It seemed like a faddy diagnosis and an excuse to medicate any kid who the television set couldn't babysit for adequately... At that time, I should note that it was clear that I had some kind of learning disability - -yet was a supposed "gifted underachiever" - - meaning I had a supposed "borderline genius" IQ but was too "lazy", "disorganized", "unfocused" even "bored" with school work.
(Back then the only treatments were "punishment", "tolerance" or counseling to deal with the "problem behaviors")
Ironically enough, just after I finished HS the SIMPSON'S became popular, and the term GIFTED UNDERACHIEVER also became a popular term... When I went to school however, bad grades meant STUPID... and there is no doubt, I carry some of the trauma and ridicule today (*Teachers just LOVE calling on ADD kids when they're not paying attention and singling them out.... supposedly to shame them into paying attention, but in reality, as an ADD'er I think it was just one trauma built on another!)
O.K. Years passed... and because of my inability to achieve in conventional settings I can't begin to describe all the problems, conflicts and restlessness I had in life... (and here is where I begin to get back on topic....)
HAVING READ THIS BOOK I actually read chapters of my own life story to such a point that had a been able to go back 28 years and been told "this is your future" - - I would have actually been able to read it and have SEEN my future (as well as perhaps get help.)
Anyway, recently I learned that I had ADHD, and you can have ADHD without being "hyper" - - and in looking deeper I realized that my life was a text book on ADD and it explained everything - - so here's my point:
Dr. Hallowell makes a lot of suggestions and leaves it open to the reader to choose... medication, therapy, coaching, 12 step program - - even yoga, medidation and nutritional supplements. Some may very well be quack therapies, others may be under-explored answers - - throw all bias aside fact is this: Had somebody given me this book 20 years ago... (long pause) I probably would have lost it (
<-- ADD joke.... sorry.) But seriously... had I read this book a long time ago the anecdotes alone would have given me a lot of insight and helped circumvent a lot of pain.
In conclusion:- - No, the book does not offer an all in all 100% proven solves all single cure... but it offers OPTIONS... as well as anecdotes that not only demonstrate what its like to have ADD, but are cathartic to read as well... so I see this book as a gift... Looking back, I now realize I suffered because this wasn't common knowlege when I was a kid... on the other hand ADD is nothing new... there have been unfocused, disorganized yet creative people since the begining of time... now however, a syndrome that describes a condition that many people like me have is being formally studied and treatment options are being explored.
In conclusion, this book not only makes an insightful read, but may very well be a gift waiting to be given.
ORDER MULTIPLE COPIES ! ! !
New Insights into ADD.......2007-07-20
Although I have read extensively on this topic, I thought this book did a good job of summarizing symptoms and uncovering new insights into ADD.
Awesome Life Hack = Highly recommended.......2007-07-09
As a highly stressed ADD'ed individual working in the information systems / design industry, this book has helped me tremendously and I have as a result recommended to many of my friends.
Written by two Harvard Medical school graduates, both of which have ADD, this book demonstrate through real-life examples how to live one's life to the fullest.
Written in ADD-friendly writing style--lists, dialog, etc.--the book serves as an excellent guide to hack your life:
1. How to take advantage of all the pros that come with Attention Deficit Disorder.
2. Steps you can take to manage the cons that come with Attention Deficit Disorder.
Highly recommended.

My husband never finished it. . . .......2007-06-13
Obviously not written well enough for a distracted man to read it.
Lots of great info........2007-05-20
After doing a lot of research on the internet and lots of problems with my 8 year old I was feeling like a failure. I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't sure what. After reading this book it told me all the steps to take to get my son evaluated by a child psychologist and at school. I had no clue where to even go so this book helped me out a lot. There are websites mentioned in the book that help too.
Book Description
People think of ADD as a kid's problem. But kids grow up. Many adults also struggle with ADD. There are book resources on the market for these folks. But they are often too long. Or too complicated. Or too dry and clinical. Adults with ADD need straightforward tools for coping with real experiences. This book offers exactly what they need.
Each chapter takes up an issue pertinent to adults with ADD: "My mind wanders" "I'm always misplacing things." "I have trouble keeping friends." "I have a hard time getting started." In no more than five to seven pages, the book outlines strategies for each problem that are simple to put into practice. If you're struggling with adult ADD, the information in this book offers you immediate and lasting rewards: better concentration, sharper memory, enhanced focus, and greater self-confidence.

This book was so engaging...........2007-08-19
This book was so engaging that I started reading it during a seminar... and continued while driving from Tampa to Gainesville. Yes, while driving and polishing one fingernail at a time. Great tips for newbie's or the seasoned professional...Just when you thought you knew it all! I strongly recommend this book (but not while driving!)to the general public and mental health professionals! Heather Damron, LMHC, Gnv, Fl.
very useful.......2007-08-08
My clients love this book--all who are ADD or ADHD or live with someone with the disorder would likely find this book useful.
Great info__author plese larger font.......2007-07-30
I was all ready to purchase this book, and gave it 5 stars based on the content, the organization, the pretty cover--everything. I was in my final decision stage when I used my favorite feature--look inside. This is why I give the content 5 stars but my feedback for author/editor/publisher and anyone else writing out there especially about ADHD (especially for those of us over 40) is that the font was way too small. At first I thought I must be looking at the copyright page and index page only. I'd love to hear that the remaining chapters are in a larger font than the first...please for the next edition, sacrifice the small size for larger print. You have left plenty of white space in the margins, perhaps that magnifies the effect. I simply can't read books I have to make the effort to read...after all, I have ADD!!
Great Book for tips to make your life run more smoothly.......2007-06-06
Very easy and fast read, great for us ADDers. Very good yet simple tips.
Yes, I have heard of some of these tips (anyone will if you watch enough HGTV shows) but there were quite a few I had not heard and were very useful.
My wish was a book not on the subject of ADD but rather a book filled with tips to show me an easy way to organize my home, office, car, bills, daily chores. This book totally fit the bill and I've been recommending it to all my non-ADD friends for organizing their houses!
Only drawback? I wish it had more tips : ) Although I plan to research the references she lists, also very helpful.
So far the best ADD book I have read.......2007-05-12
This book is super easy for an ADD person to read! The paragraphs are short and to the point. There is no wasted space on wordiness like in some other ADD books. Some of the tips are simple, but that is helpful as I needed the reminder of the simple tips that are out there. There are many tips in getting family members to help with your quest to simplify your ADD life. That wasn't helpful to me as this is something I want to work-on by myself. But others may enjoy reading those tips. The book is wonderfully put together in that you can open it to any page and start reading. There is no need to read from cover to cover. So far this has been the best ADD book that I have read.

Customer Reviews:
Slow developing and boring.......2007-08-20
I loved all her other novels, but this one was very slow and boring. The characters spend to much time thinking and analyzing the same things. There was little plot or character development until the second half of the story. Once the plot opened up, it dragged on to a slow resolution. I not longer cared about the story. I did not get the characters. The fantasy romance stories were not very enticing and almost fillers. Once her secret was revealed it lacked any surprise. All rather anti-climactic.
What a MAN!.......2007-06-28
I loved this book. The plot device is a common one: woman doesn't want to marry, man must change her mind. But in this instance Phoebe's desire not to marry was backed up with real evidence that she truly had an interesting, useful life and didn't need a man to fill her time. She had a purpose for going to teas and balls all day and her strength of character was real and vital. I loved her from the first when upon meeting Deverell she towed him around the house party introducing him to every OTHER marriageable female in attendance. Clever, clever girl.
But most of all I just loved him! His little fantasy plays were delicious. I would have loved hearing him whisper all that sexy nonsense in my ear! Laurens has something new there, I hope she uses that again in the future. He was definitely a manly man but could also step back and allow Phoebe to lead when appropriate. Yes, What a man!
Sigh, sigh, one can dream........
Stephanie Laurens not up to her usual standard.......2007-06-24
Stephanie Laurens was the first romance author I've ever read, and I've been a faithful follower ever since I read "On a Wild Night." I've followed the Bastion Club series from the beginning and, while the stylistic quality of the books is consistently polished and the characters are usually likeable, the stories often feel formulaic. Personally, I don't think that's always a bad thing, because sometimes you want a retelling of a familiar story. Though, to be honest, her books would probably feel a lot more rehashed if it weren't for her smooth prose and tasteful love scenes. Anyway, I always find myself picking up her books because, even though I know it's not going to be the most original story, it's going to be well-written.
This book is mostly par-for-the-course, though I think the pacing is a little slow. The narrative is practically divided into two parts, the first focusing on the development of the relationship between the hero and heroine, and the second focusing on the "plot" part of the story. The villain of the story isn't even introduced until the second half of the book! I feel the plot and romantic development could have been a little tighter overall, but it doesn't actually make the book feel dragged out. As far as characterization, the two leads may not be the most original characters, but they're likeable enough, and reasonably engaging. They're certainly leagues above some of the stupid or frustrating heros and heroines that populate other trashy romances.
In this book, the author explores the more psychological aspects of seduction with some role-playing scenarios, but some of them don't seem that sexy to me, and one in particular becomes too over-complicated to be seductive. As with all Laurens books, the action is fluidly depicted with tasteful (if somewhat cliche) euphemisms.
I give this book 3.5 stars for being reasonably well-written but not very well-paced, rounded up to 4 just because I like Stephanie Laurens :) Fans of Ms. Laurens will most likely enjoy this book, and completionists like me will want to read it since it's part of the Bastion Club series, but I wouldn't recommend this book for first-time readers of Ms. Laurens. You can experience a much better example of her talent in the book "Four In Hand" published by Harlequin.
A three and a half star romance.......2007-06-13
This is not the best romance I have ever read, nor is it the worst. The book entertained me, but did not capture my imagination the way some Regency romances have.
The good points-- I really liked the male lead, Deverell. I found him to be sensitive and caring while masculine and frightening. Just the type of hero I like! I found the book to be very sensual in just the right teasing, fun way. I also liked the addition of the suspense (albeit somewhat unrealistic) in this novel. Phoebe's anxiety over men had to be overcome by Deverell was another great piece to the storyline, but I do wish that particularly aspect of the plot had been more developed.
The downsides-- The story didn't feel truly "regency," as the plot was somewhat unrealistic. First, as another reviewer mentioned, Phoebe (a virgin) ends up inviting Deverell repeatedly to spend the night with her in her family home. That would never happen. Not to mention, they have repeated sexual encounters without any discussion of the reproductive consequences of their indiscretions. I would like to think that a woman as bright as Phoebe would have thought about pregnancy before diving head-first into an intense sexual relationship with no plans of marriage or contraception. Additionally, her business of whisking female servants out of the clutches of lecherous members of the ton felt a little contrived. It was fun, but felt ridiculous, particularly as Deverell and Phoebe's family knew about this enterprise. Similarly the sideplot about the "slavery" issue seemed to appear out of nowhere and felt extremely disconnected from the rest of the storyline. I think those sections could have been removed and a gentler and more reasonable conclusion could have been reached (much more quickly).
Overall, I would read this romance again, but I would suggest checking it out of the library. It isn't one of those books that will achieve a spot among my "keeper" regencies.
Disappointing.......2007-06-13
I'm not sure that this is a true historical romance that people would love. The characters are one dimensional and the plotline is pretty boring. I think it must just be Stephanie's style, but a combo of the issues with this story make it a slow, drawn out read. I found myself skipping large sections of the book and still have some clue as to what was slowly happening. The book started out with great potenital, but flatlined. The same plot could be applied to today's world, espcially considering Deverell slept over at Phoebe's house for durations of time, with her family close at hand. I think this book just is lacking and I'm somewhat disappointed that Avon decided to publish this.
Book Description
In Driven to Distraction, Drs. Hallowell and Ratey revealed why millions of adults and children are chronic underachievers, caught up in persistent problems in school, at work, and at home. The cause is not lack of self-discipline, but, rather, an inborn neurological condition, Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD.
Answers To Distraction provides practical solutions to the dilemmas of ADD. This "user's guide" to ADD is presented in question-and-answer format ideal for even the most distractible reader. Each chapter covers a specific aspect of ADD, such as ADD in women, ADD and aggression, ADD and addiction, or ADD and work. The authors provide advice for teachers on recognizing ADD and helping students to cope, plus extraordinary insights into the relationship difficulties caused by ADD.
Customer Reviews:
Adds some to the first book.......2007-01-10
Get Driven to Distraction first, but this adds some lifestyle tips. A fair amount of repetition of the first book. It sure is cold in here.
ADD/ADHD IS REAL.......2006-03-15
This is a good book because of it's format; ie: Question/Answer. I think it might even be more helpful to those living with, or who associate with others who have ADD/ADHD.
To those who think ADD/ADHD is not real... your wrong. That being said, I wish to state here that it is not a defect. It is simply another brain/mind type. It is NORMAL, but it does not fit in with the majority. That is why we with ADD/ADHD struggle. We have to fit into a world set up for the majority. Once one learns that this is a GIFT rather than a disadvantage, it is incredibly freeing and even life saving. I know what I am talking about. I learned I had ADD when I was 37. I thank God every time I think about it that He made me this way. My advantages are far too numerous to list here, but suffice it to say, I can do what others only dream of because of this GIFT! My suggestion to all who are like me? Rejoice in it, and make it work FOR YOU. We are the dreamers of big dreams and we can make them HAPPEN.
Great AD/HD Resource.......2004-06-04
This a great AD/HD resource. The book is written in a very ADD friendly Q & A format. This book will anser many commonly asked AD/HD related questions. Many of the questioned answered are ones that you may have always wanted to know but were afried to ask.
This a great book to add your AD/HD Library.
I'll show you my disease if you show me yours! Respond.......2004-05-05
That made me laugh. I have to ask do you believe in AIDS? Do you believe in cancer? Do you think people in wheel chairs can walk? If so way? Have you had any of them? Do you really know what they are like? How do you know they are real? How because science tells you and that same science also has done brain scans on people with AD/HD and has proven that it is real.
So I know people without ADD can have some traits of ADD like forgetting things, sure some people can be just like that but when you forget your own birthday, always lose your keys etc, never organised, can't concentrate for more then about 2 minutes, never on time for anything, poor sleeping habits, trouble learning what others find easy etc would you like me to go on?
If they sound like normal people to me god help us all.
Answers to Review.......2004-03-18
Please disregard the top statement about ADHD being a medical fad. Obviously, he/she has never gone through a day of having ADHD. If this ADHD thing is such a fad, as he/she claims, then explain why studies have shown that well over 50% of those diagnosed with ADHD report major improvements after medication. ADHD research is not perfect, but it has benefited way too many people in this world to pass it off as just an excuse to sell pills.
I guarantee that the reviewer would not be diagnosed with ADHD, as he/she suggests. Doctors go through a series of questioning, and you will only be diagnosed unless your symptoms go over a certain threshold. You don't just get labeled with ADHD because you're forgetful or sometimes hyper; you have to display a certain level of symptoms. In extreme cases, it's almost impossible to deny: blurting out comments for no apparent reason, complete inability to sit still, etc....
ADHD research is not perfect. But just because it doesn't work for you or your family does not mean it applies to everyone. I'm sorry that your child was misdiagnosed, but a lot of people are diagnosed and helped. But for those who want to find information, I have (and most psychologists I know) recommended "Driven to Distraction". It's pretty much the most basic book you can find on the subject. If you are one of the fairly small percentage of adults who are constantly frustrated by a brain malfunction that makes you feel stupid (even though you know you're not), then please at least do the research. It couldn't hurt you to arm yourself with more information.

Customer Reviews:
Worth considering.......2005-09-19
This book sheds light on the skill of listening, which we often take for granted. It challenges you to consider whether you are a good listener and how that affects your everyday interactions with customers, co-workers, and friends. It's definitely a book worth reading and passing on to your friends as a gentle hint. At times the book can seem repetitive.
A good place to start.......2003-03-26
Intriguing concept: tying effective listening to meditation. The two are closely related. Each topic complements the other nicely. As a reader and practitioner, I just wanted more of each.
Excellent.......2001-07-03
This book totally transformed the way I listen! Using the techniques from this book: - I no longer have to focus on how I am going to respond. - I acually hear what the person is saying. - I don't experience stress about communicating. People comment that I communicate more effectively now, and all I've changed is how I listen. The book I felt dragged a little in the beginning, but if you just hang in there, you will be well rewarded!
A One-On-One Lesson from an Expert in Her Field.......2001-05-07
This book was a great read, including lots of highlighting and note taking. Listening is a very important skill, yet it seems to be very undervalued by the general public. The author makes us aware of just how important listening is in every aspect of our lives; from school to business to relationships with those we love.
Two of the author's most important concepts were "Mindful listening" and "Getting into the other person's movie." Both of these were a constant theme throughout the book and, if people (myself included) learn these alone, they will become much, much more effective communicators.
The author's writing style made me feel as though we were having a personal consultation. Her sincerity comes through very clearly, and I believe having this book in your library will serve as a very valuable resource both for you and for your children, as they can also have access to some very important life skills.
Mindful Listening.......2001-03-29
I had the pleasure of meeting Becky Shafir (and her delightful father Paul) at the International Listening Association Convention in March 2001, where she discussed her book _The Zen of Listening_. What her book teaches us is to "do what you're doing" -- not be thinking 10 steps ahead -- because if you're doing that, you're NOT listening. Be present in the moment and you can't help but become a more effective listener. . . not to mention person in general!

Disappointed.......2006-09-16
I was expecting something different from this book - maybe something more along the Getting Things Done path than what this ended up being. It is definitely a short read - the highlights are outlined in the book description above.
I'd say this is definitely geared more towards management than worker bee's, but there are still a few things anyone can use. Number one being, just say "no" to meetings that don't provide any value. Other than that (which I already try to practice), I just didn't get much out of this book. I'm a little surprised by all of the glowing reviews I read here. Maybe I missed something.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Your To-Do List.......2006-08-26
I'll admit, there are some books I reread simply because I didn't get them the first time around. With "Focus...", I reread it because I wanted to internalize the great tips.
The book is peppered with Key Points in blockquote style, real world examples, worksheets and each chapter begins with a summary. This is an easy read, but also an important one.
If you're in project management or in charge of making your manufacturing line work lean, this book is a must for your library
A flat-out terrific book.......2006-08-19
Lisa Haneberg's mantra in this book is that when managers do what matters most, rather than trying to do it all, they improve energy and engagement in workplaces. I couldn't agree more.
Haneberg offers ten techniques that enable managers to Focus Like A Laser Beam. The techniques are aimed at exciting and energizing their people, getting people talking about what truly matters, and letting go of activities that distract and divert energy. Practice any one of those ten techniques and you will become a better manager. Practice them all and you might become a great one.
Focus on Success with this Book.......2006-08-01
This book is a must read for anyone looking to make more money and have more fun doing it.
I work with my clients on advancing their career through value creation and I've made Focus Like a Laser Beam required reading for them.
Lisa Haneberg's book is a quick and insightful read that will provide value to managers at all levels.
Buy this book and teach its concepts to your team.
The only thing better than improving your focus is giving the gift of focus to someone else.
Great for Sales Teams!.......2006-07-27
One of the biggest challenges in B2B sales teams is overwhelm - you know, instead of the traditional idea of more month at the end of the money - many in selling have more tasks at the end of the day. Selling is a non-stop profession.
Lisa Haneberg's book hits on some key ideas which can, if put into place, immediately help individuals and a whole team be more productive. The chapter about the myths of muultitasking, the chapter about having fun (which ties into your personal mission and vision), and the idea of doing one great thing are reasons enough to invest in this book. I bring a copy to clients and encourage them to think about these topics.
If a sales leader can accomplish one great thing each day, they would be ahead of the pack. Individual salespeople need help and support to focus on what is important and revenue generating every day - not just sometimes. This is a book for every sales organization to have on hand.
Book Description
Pride. Anger. Envy. Slothfulness. Lust. Greed. Gluttony. Is this an out-of-date list of sins preached against by a behind-the-times church? Or are these sins a challenge and a stumbling block for those of us who are living at the dawn of the twenty-first century? Pastor Ed Young, Jr. says, "I believe you can not only live what the world calls a 'good life,' but you can live what God calls a 'right life.' You can be free of the things that are hanging you up. But to be free, you can and must own up to the distractions described in this book."

It's the year 2044, and America has gone to hell. A disenfranchised U.S. Air Force base has turned to highway robbery in order to pay the bills. Vast chunks of the population live nomadic lives fueled by cheap transportation and even cheaper computer power. Warfare has shifted from the battlefield to the global networks, and China holds the information edge over all comers. Global warming is raising sea level, which in turn is drowning coastal cities. And the U.S. government has become nearly meaningless. This is the world that Oscar Valparaiso would have been born into, if he'd actually been born instead of being grown in vitro by black market baby dealers. Oscar's bizarre genetic history (even he's not sure how much of him is actually human) hasn't prevented him from running one of the most successful senatorial races in history, getting his man elected by a whopping majority. But Oscar has put himself out of a job, since he'd only be a liability to his boss in Washington due to his problematic background. Instead, Oscar finds himself shuffled off to the Collaboratory, a Big Science pork barrel project that's run half by corruption and half by scientific breakthroughs. At first it seems to be a lose-lose proposition for Oscar, but soon he has his "krewe" whipped into shape and ready to take control of events. Now if only he can straighten out his love life and solve a worldwide crisis that no one else knows exists. --Craig E. Engler
Book Description
It's November 2044, an election year, and the state of the Union is a farce. The government is broke, the cities are privately owned, and the military is shaking down citizens in the streets. Washington has become a circus and no one knows that better than Oscar Valparaiso. A political spin doctor, Oscar has always made things look good. Now he wants to make a difference.
But Oscar has a skeleton in his closet. His only ally: Dr. Greta Penninger, a gifted neurologist at the bleeding edge of the neural revolution. Together they're out to spread a very dangerous idea whose time has come. And so have their enemies: every technofanatic, government goon, and laptop assassin in America. Oscar and Greta might not survive to change the world, but they'll put a new spin on it.

Masterful writing undermined by gross implausibilities........2006-05-19
-------------------------
Rating: "B": masterful writing and funny/clever satire, undermined
by gross implausibilities and clunky auctorial manipulations.
Distraction has a more mature, less headlong feel than Holy Fire,
Sterling's previous novel. And the premise is grimmer -- the mid-
21st century USA, bankrupted by a Chinese netwar, is coming
seriously unglued. could almost see the footnotes in the catalog of "what went wrong":
Military bases selling equipment to survive: Russia, now
16 US political parties, endless infighting: recent Italy.
Charismatic, corrupt, narcissistic Southern governors: a composite from RL -- pick your favorite. Fer sure a contribution from Narcissus ultimus, the Man from Hope.
Sterling's eye for the absurd and powers of invention are
unmatched, and you'll have a lot of fun reading Distraction. But --
the book never quite jells, and left me feeling vaguely dissatisfied. I
started a review, but couldn't quite put my finger on what went
wrong -- until I found Gerald Jonas had done the review I wanted to
write [G00GLE NY Times]:
In DISTRACTION (Dec 98, Bantam, $23.95) the estimable Bruce
Sterling demonstrates why science fiction is such a difficult genre
to get right... So unlikely is [Sterling's] next-century scenario
that I found myself unable to take the actions of his characters
seriously, even as satire. Ideas as counterintuitive as the
bankrupting of the United States by the overnight obliteration of
copyright and trademark laws cannot function as mere background for
other events; they call for front-and-center treatment on their
own... The players in the drama [are reduced] to bloodless puppets of
the authorial imagination...
Yup, that's pretty much What Went Wrong with the book. Perhaps he got too
close to some True Beliefs... Pity. Still worth reading, but you might wait for the paperback, or get it from the library. And mind you, I'm a big Sterling fan.
Minor cavil for a bit of background, which shows up 2 or 3 times:
Wyoming burning? What's to burn? You can walk through a short-
grass prairie fire and barely singe your leg-hair. Grmph.
And I profoundly, deeply, sincerely wish Mr Sterling would find
some fresh superlative modifiers....
I know, cheap shot. But DISTRACTION marks the start of Sterling's decline as a novelist, which, I'm sorry to report, has now extended to his nonfiction. And he's published no new short fiction since 2003. Sigh.

It's okay.......2004-01-14
The story here is decent but not exactly what it's pitched as. To read the description would lead you to believe that you're going to read a book about two people trying to change a corrupt, lost America. But by the time you finish, it's obvious that the story is more about two people who are caught up in their own bubble and have not really made an effort to fix America. Instead they have played a bunch of "dangerous" games with a few politicians and some crazies who have dropped out of society becuase there are just not jobs left.
I was also constantly mystified at how everyone reacts to Oscar in this story. Every single character he comes across just stares in amazement at his skills to think and plan quickly and to get the upper hand. That is fine and all except that he never actually earns this respect. At no point in the story did he have a thought that was really that original or dashing. Sure, he can talk quick but lots of people can do that. There were no ideas he put forward that the reader couldn't see coming. Perhaps the moral of the lesson is that in the future everyone will be so slow that a "normal" thinker by our standards will be nearly super-human.
But the one thing this book has going for it is that it has a sharp, believable future. If we don't fix our system now, it is not difficult to see the America painted here as a reality. That vision of the future alone does make this worth reading and saved the book from some serious issues that I had with it.
A work of precision intensity and intelligence.......2003-10-16
Bruce Sterling addresses every major topic of our time. It is a transformational futurists view of the social impact that biotechnology, nanotech, and a global network may have. The sheer number of concepts that have been intertwined and projected into the future are staggering. It is a massive vision, and yet it is told simply and with a sensitivity for suspense and overall appeal.
Great Near Future Sci-Fi.......2003-10-03
Sterling does it again with this book, prescient and witty. It tells the tale of two people stuck in a civil war of sorts between the old world and the new. It is a great read if you are into "Emergence Theory," as you watch the city of Buna unfold.
Confirming once again the whole genre of Sci-fFi.......2003-09-01
I've recently felt compelled to re-read 'Distraction', and I've been really enjoying myself. The character of Oscar Valparaiso has snuck up on me and won me over; my copy is all marked up in pink and purple highliner. There are so many great and clever lines.
The people who don't like the plot are probably looking for a conventional Triumph of the Individual Against All Odds adventure. "Distraction" is that rarity in speculative fiction, character-driven Sci-Fi. For an S-F novel to be character-driven, the character(s) must be recognizable and well-observed, but also modified by some speculative concept. The ability to observe well a person who cannot yet exist requires an intuitive vision that, if successful, confirms the whole genre of Sci-fi as a literary artform. I think Bruce Sterling pulls it off.
The whole delightfully wierd rambling plot, about feuding anarchistic nomad bands and the power-grappling over a national
biological laboratory by 16 political parties and neurological Gumbo a la Bayou, are loaded with flip ideas and throw-away shaggy-dog genius, but are ultimately a... well, a distraction. The real story is about Oscar himself, whose plight as the ultimate outsider seems like it must be a sublimation of something the author knows about personally. I'm sorry to say that I worry that Oscar's in-vitro birth as a genetic experiment in a black-market off-shore Columbian Mafia baby-selling operation may be occurring in real life right now. How the scary dark unavoidable abuses of our unprecedented technology impact on human souls is the real subject of this book.
Oscar's dark alter-ego, Green Huey, says to him,"I finally got you all figured out... You're always gonna have your nose pressed up against the glass, watchin' other folks drink the champagne. Nothing you do will last. You'll be a sideshow and a shadow, and you'll stay one till you die. But, son, if you got a big head start on the coming revolution, .... you can goddamn have Massachusetts." But Oscar consistantly chooses quietly perserving his own dignity over exploiting his tremendos gifts, which would only re-enforce his alienation. 'Distraction' is for anyone who's ever found their nose pressed up against the glass in this present bewildering Cyber-Age.
