    Book Description

Bill Willingham's critically acclaimed, Eisner Award-winning series FABLES is a wickedly imaginative take on the current state of the world's favorite characters from fable and lore. This original hardcover collection is set in the early days of Fabletown, long before the FABLES series began. Traveling in Arabia as an Ambassador from the exiled FABLES community, Snow White is captured by the local sultan who wants to marry her (and then kill her). But the clever Snow attempts to charm the sultan instead by playing Scheherazade, telling him fantastic stories for a total of 1001 nights.Running the gamut from uncomfortable horror to dark intrigue to mercurial coming-of-age, FABLES:1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL reveals the secret histories of familiar FABLES characters through a series of compelling and visually illustrative tales.Writer Bill Willingham is joined by an impressive array of artists, including Charles Vess, Brian Bolland, John Bolton, Michael Wm. Kaluta, James Jean, Tara McPherson, Derek Kirk Kim, Esao Andrews, Mark Buckingham, Mark Wheatley and Jill Thompson. FABLES: 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL is both a welcomed entry point to the critically acclaimed series and an essential part of Willingham's enchanting and imaginative FABLES mythos.

    Book Description

The Trappers, hunter-gatherers who live beside a mammoth wall of ice, have none of the wonders their carefully hand-copied, ancient Warm Times books describe, like cars, guns, or plows. When bloodthirsty invaders slaughter most of the tribe, a small band of survivors heads south, led by a man few of them trust. Holding the remnants of her people together is their doctor, Catania Olsen, whose ugliness has left her unmarried but whose medical skill has earned her people's respect. The Trappers' hazardous trek takes them from their familiar frozen northland, where summer lasts two chilly weeks, through a burgeoning forest where people still know how to make paper, to a warm, bustling gulf coast trade mart where man-beasts created by unnatural science tread the dirt streets. Journeying into the warm lands will change Catania, mind, heart, and soul. She will gain and lose a love, see great wisdom and greater folly, and become a mother. Finally, she will have to choose between her people and her freedom.

4 out of 5 stars Mankind in the next iceage.......2006-11-06

Set in the future after the next ice age has destroyed most of civilization, this is a story about Dr. Catania Olsen a member of the Trappers tribe, a group by people living in the North at the edge of the glacial wall. Enough time has passed so that most knowledge has been lost. Civilization is still on the fall. It is a brutal time and life is very hard. Catania's tribe is attacked and forced to move.

The tribe meets the Garden people, which live in the forest. There Catania meets the rather extreme one-eyed doctor. Catania must tread carefully with the half-mad woman.

I enjoyed this story. It is creative and well thought out. We are not presented a world where humanity bravely steps up to and overcomes a challenge, but where it descends back into darkness and merely strives for survival.

    An interesting story.

    2 out of 5 stars Unfinishable.......2006-03-23

I tried to like this book. I really did. I normally love post-apocalypse-type stories, and this one looked like a winner. Now, to be fair, the writing was not too bad, and the characters seemed well-drawn.

Let me tell you why I got 150 pages in and then threw it down in disgust: The insane overabundance of ellipses. You know, when you see three periods strung together... Once in a while, such a device can add tension, etc. etc. But when you use them (and I'm not joking here) every third or fourth sentence, it quite rudely interrupts the flow of the story. But wait! It gets worse! There were several dozen instances where the author and/or editor apparently felt that just one ellipses wouldn't do. So instead there are two or three strung together, both on the end AND beginning of sentences. ......Kind of like this......

    Annoying, and ultimately unreadable.

3 out of 5 stars Good but bloody.......2006-03-10

Reminds me more of Fantasy than Post-apocalytic. Lots of GRAPHIC violence in the battle descriptions, not for youngsters or those with "iffy" stomachs.

5 out of 5 stars a gripping tale of future survival!.......2002-06-11

The next Ice Age is upon us: imagine the mile-high cliff of ice at your back, with the Rocky Mountains another impenetrable wall of ice to the west, & people from the east, who once occasionally hunted peaceably on the periphery of your territory, are now intent on taking over your traplines & your caves. Where do you go? Into the great, green forest to the South where the snow ends & monsters dwell?

Mitchell Smith has created a whole new future, with particular attention to the anthropological aspects of how we might have made it, what things & thoughts might have survived from the Warm Time.

I particularly enjoyed the fully realized heroines & heroes, those who die & those who survive. They have keen insights & eyesights that we, today in our citified lethargy, have long since discarded. Each person could have walked in today's world & felt a glimmer of recognition for us modern folks & our modern nation, except...

SNOWFALL is a marvelous, richly-textured adventure that allows us a glimpse of what really might happen when our descendants have to grapple with the inevitable change in the Earth's climate. What will happen to Chicago, for instance, when thousands of feet of snow bury the city? What will happen to our store of knowledge, once electricity is no more? What will happen to our society? Who then will be the readers of what books? What will the doctors know? Who will be our leaders? What kinds of relationships will we have?

If you read only one science-fiction/anthropology book this year, read SNOWFALL! Mitchell Smith has written a superb survivalist saga, that lingers in your mind everafter, wondering. It certainly deserves a sequel, for I would dearly love to know how Catania makes it to the Sierras & the snow-bound warrior/hunters who live there.

    4 out of 5 stars Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi (without the SCI).......2002-04-24

I have mixed feelings about this novel. On one hand, it has a pretty neat premise: The impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy with Jupiter in 1994 perturbed that planet's orbit imperceptibly, yet just enough to cause gradual climatic change on Earth, and hundreds of years later we are in the grip of a new Ice Age. Cool idea! Yet I'm troubled by the fact that such climate change would necessarily result in the catastrophic setback of science and culture depicted in this book. If the climate change had been accompanied by, for instance, a few good meteor impacts, the tribal existence of the book's protagonists would have been far more plausible. Too many questions are left unanswered here, and "Snowfall" is left begging for a sequel.

That having been said, I still found this novel quite entertaining. I've always been a sucker for post-apocalyptic sci-fi, although there is precious little sci-fi here. Instead Mitchell Smith has painted a rich picture of a tribal community that calls itself the Trappers, living a tooth-and-nail existence just below the Wall Of Ice that engulfed Canada and the northern half of the United States. Having been forced off their land by tribes that have in turn been forced off THEIR land, the remnants of the Trappers must move south to warmer climes and strange human cultures. There are some memorable, well-drawn characters in this tale, most notably Catania, the tribe's doctor and preserver of ancient medical knowledge. Tribal warfare, sickness and death are portrayed unflinchingly here. The book is divided into short, easily digested chapters, each beginning with an excerpt from Catania's journal. Definitely worth a look if you like books of this genre.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not as great as #1.......2005-02-02

This book suffers in comparison to book #1, but then as compared to the garbage next to it on the scifi/fantasy shelves its grand stuff. Very different tone and setting but still excellent writing and great characters

    1 out of 5 stars A major disappointment!.......2004-10-07

I liked this authors previous books so well I took a chance and bought Moonrise in hardback. A big mistake. Although I can highly recommend the two previous books (Snowfall and Kingdom River), I can't do the same for this book. It does not follow the protagonist from the previous two books, it is extremely slow, and it writes of sex with a genetically altered; albeit intelligent; animal/human. I found this to be distasteful, as I did other parts of this book. If this was a paperback book, I would throw it in the trash. If you want a really great postapocalyptic book, buy "Dies the Fire", by S. M. Stirling instead.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-08-22

A slow book? I had to take a break reading it because I was out of breath. There are incredible chase sequences through dense forests, an glacier climbing scene that made me dizzy, memorable characters, and a devilishly well-imagined plot. And Smith is a heck of a writer. Sometimes, his language seems Shakespearean.

This is easily the finest part of the trilogy. I think it could be read as a standalone, but the other two inform this one and are definitely worth reading.

    3 out of 5 stars It's another slooow Moonrise!.......2004-07-30

As much as I liked the 1st book of this trilogy, these last 2 have left me bored.
As much as I liked the 1st Snowfall novel, these last two pale by comparison. Too slow and cumbersome to read. But I absolutely loved the 1st one! Why can't these other two be as good - or better?!
I loved the idea and synopsis of this one better than the 2nd novel, but it came up way short. Not a fast-moving novel at all.

5 out of 5 stars terrific climatic apocalypse science fiction.......2004-04-03

His life has been one of a prince though his father the Khan was defeated by the couple who ultimately raised him (see KINGDOM RIVER). He is second in line to the throne. However, when King Sam Monroe and his Queen Rachel die in an apparent boating accident in the Gulf and the heir Prince Newton is assassinated twenty years old Bajaret does not receive the crown; instead he flees for his life. Bajaret knows that if his enemies catch him he is dead.

In a nearby forest where he is now the hunted, Bajaret meets people reengineered in the Boston labs beneath the ice. Richard who is more beast than human; sly Nancy, and cold hearted Errol demand that Bajazet aid them in their efforts to destroy Boston, a place where evil rules. Bajazet would prefer to hide, but also learns that the Bostonians plan to attack his beloved Middle Kingdom, currently in chaos caused by the royal deaths. He begins to question whether conspiratorial murders occurred.

This terrific science fiction occurs approximately six centuries after Jupiter' orbit changed causing a new ice age (see SNOWFALL). The story line is action packed but makes the climatic apocalypse world seem so real. Mitchell Smith augments that feeling of realism with the deaths of some of the heroes. Fans of futuristic tales will be reminded of the Sterling Lanier's Hiero novels with this wonderful trilogy.

    Book Description

Sam Monroe is the reluctant commander of a tough-minded warrior people living in what was once northern Mexico. His tiny country is flanked on the northeast by the Kingdom River, a vast, trade-driven nation that replaced the southern United States, and on the northwest by the Khanate, an empire of nomads who swept down the west coast after crossing the ice from what was once Russia. Sam's people cling to a precarious, hard-won freedom. Toghrul Khan, leader of the Khanate, wants Kingdom's lucrative trade and lush farmlands. To get them, Sam Monroe knows, the Khan's forces will march right over his people's small towns and precious homesteads. His country's only hope is an alliance with Kingdom-but the far larger Kingdom may simply swallow them up. Unless . . .Sam's proven ability in the field attracts the attention of Queen Joan, who rules Kingdom with a heart as cold as the Colorado ice where she was raised. But if she gives Sam Monroe command of Kingdom's forces, her loyal generals and admirals may feel a lot less loyal. Unless . . . Young, bookish princess Rachel is the key. A marriage between Sam and the princess unites both their nations and their fighting forces and gives the commanders a way to save face.Has the alliance been made in time? The Khan's armies are sweeping east in a rush, threatening both sides of the vast Mississippi River. Kingdom's large army and navy move excruciatingly slowly. Sam's people are fleet but greatly outnumbered. And there are other dangers Sam Monroe is just beginning to comprehend. The technologically advanced people of New England, who breed monsters in women's wombs and have learned to levitate, are watching the growing conflict between the Khan and Kingdom and more important, watching Sam as he learns not just to command but to rule.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Booorrrring. . . . . . ........2005-04-15

I think this series is probably one of the most boring I have ever encountered. I'm not sure why I am still trying to slog my way through Kingdom's River. There isn't a single character that I care about and the writing is tedious. Especially the constant references to "warm-time". Who cares.

3 out of 5 stars Overly long, but entertaining.......2004-06-11

This is an entertaining read, but it's not as good as the first book in the series, Snowfall. Once again Mitchell does a good job of bringing us into the lives and world of a post apocalyptic future. However, where Snowfall was a portrait of a small band of people fleeing to survive, Kingdom River tries to work on a grand, clash of armies, scale. The result is that the characters are less vivid and there is a lot of repetition.

On the repetition front, the strategy to be used in Monroe's fight against the Khan is explained, in detail, no less than three times. Does the reader really need to be reminded that many times? There are several references to curses that "a few decades earlier would have meant death". OK, we get it, times change, even in this world. But do we need to be told the same thing again and again?

Mitchell also leaves many things unexplained. He doesn't try to explain the range of deities (Weather, Mountain Jesus, Floating Jesus etc.), content to let them be just part of the world. That's fine.

On the other hand, he doesn't explain why Monroe lets the Boston ambassadress into his camp. There is no strategic or tactical advantage in allowing her in and Monroe repeatedly shows that he is always considering the implications of his actions. The ambassadress is a minor character that does nothing to advance the plot. She feels like an after thought thrown in to let the story be more "science fiction". Maybe there will be a pay off in the third book.

One more minor annoyance - the narrative is constantly making references to "fine warm-time phrases". Maybe Mitchell is simply pointing out words and phrases that he really likes, but it's really hard to believe that these people would be constantly reflecting on their usage of the language.

This is a fun read, but it could have used another round of edits to tighten it up.

3 out of 5 stars Good Adventure Novel.......2003-08-08

This is a good adventure novel set in a future where the Earth is in the grip of an Ice Age. Civilization has crumbled and been succeeded by a variety of pre-industrial societies. This is the second book in a trilogy about North America. This book is the story of an alliance between 2 of these societies against a third pre-industrial culture, a Mongol-like horde that has crossed Beringia to conquer western North America. The story is a relatively conventional military campaign concluding with a reconstruction of the battle of Cannae. The plot has the usual romantic elements. Smith does a good job of presenting believable characters and his future Earth is interesting and described well. This book is not, however, as good as its predecessor, Snowfall. The quality of writing and plotting is better in Snowfall, which has a less conventional story line and gives a better sense of life in a barbarous age.

    4 out of 5 stars Entertaining post-apocalyptic war novel.......2003-06-22

Centuries after a sudden ice age crushed our civilization, North America is divided into several kingdoms. New England, with strange mental powers and genetic engineering keeping alive amidst the great glacier, the Southern empire in Mexico, the Khanate in the Southwest, and a powerful but stagnant Middle Kingdom surrounding the enormous River that was once Mississippi. The small, fractious country in the North Mexico has little chance between the warring giants, except for their tradition of independence, and their leader, the reluctant general Sam Monroe.

The story of Sam, and his attempts to block the all-conquering, mongol-like Khanate from running over the continent, is entertaining, full of battles and human interest stories. The language seems a bit burdened at times, with constant references to Warm-times, and the topic familiar. However, the major characters are interesting, Sam himself sympathetic, and the battles, and the politics exciting and tense.

    --inotherworlds.com

5 out of 5 stars apocalyptic future world.......2003-06-15

In the distant future a curtain of ice stretches from sea to once shining sea. To survive one must head south of the great wall of ice that has devastated what were once much of the United States and all of Canada. To endure, clans and kingdoms formed as people battles for control of the livable land left on the North America.

Years have passed since Monroe and Olsen led the Colorado Trappers south where they join forces with the Garden tree-dwellers (see SNOWFALL). Jack and Catania's son Sam now leads the army of North-Map Mexico, but knows that his people are on the easement and that the Khanate nomads led by Toghrul Khan will ravage the land on their way to war with Kingdom River ruled by Queen Joan. Sam knows his relatively small country has no chance though the never defeated army would risk their lives to prove otherwise. He needs an alliance with Joan, but worries that her much larger nation will gobble up his small country. To have some say in the confederacy, Sam marries the Kingdom's Princess Rachel. War remains inevitable as Khan and his barbarians sweep over all in their path.

The second tale in Mitchell Smith's apocalyptic future world, KINGDOM RIVER, is a very exciting look at people struggling to survive a harsh time, but in this novel (as opposed to the ice of SNOWFALL) it is from enemy forces. The story line escorts the reader to a changed realm where civilization almost totally collapsed. The audience will picture this frozen wasteland as a distinct possibility because Mr. Smith goes to extreme lengths through his strong characters and vivid universe to make everything believable.

3 out of 5 stars Suspense and romantic tension in a snowstorm.......2007-01-03

Mystery author and heiress Caitlyn Bennett is getting angry notes from a fan that turn threatening. When her editor Aaron receives similar letters at his publishing house and confronts her, she admits that she too has been on the receiving end. When someone pushes her into the path of a truck at a crosswalk, Aaron calls on his step-brother Connor McKee, who happens to be a former cop turned security consultant since the cops don't seem to believe her. Despite disliking each other, Connor and Caitlyn agree to work together to keep her safe. After weeks of being holed up together, they find that there is a thin line between lust and hate and embark on an affair, but pride gets the better of both of them.

Meanwhile, the fan has escalated his menace by killing women who resemble Caitlyn. After three victims, the police don't make the connection until Connor makes it for them, of course, by now Caitlyn has taunted the killer in the press in an effort to bring him out and end her seclusion, unaware that the killings have taken place. Then the killer strikes out at someone close to her, and Caitlyn learns that her father kept at least one big secret from her.

Sala's romantic suspense novel is set during a snowstorm in New York, adding plenty of tension and suspense (even if the bad guy was pretty easy to guess), though readers looking for sizzle will need to look further.

    4 out of 5 stars Snowfall.......2006-08-09

This was my first time reading a book from this author and I was very pleasently surprized. Well written mystery romance.

4 out of 5 stars A non stop romantic suspense.......2005-07-21

Right away, the author pulls you into the story and instantly helps you to connect with the characters. The villian's thought process and motives are clearly projected by using a pseudo name leaving the reader to keep guessing as to the killer's true identity. To an avid mystery reader, the killer will be a bit on the obvious side, but still keeps you wondering if the author will shock you. There is plenty of sexual tension between the main characters, yet the romance is a bit on the weak side. The suspense is what continues to pull the reader along and for that it is a decent read. To intensify the excitement, try reading this book in the dead of winter when a snow storm is brewing outside. Living in the heat of Arizona doesn't quite capture the full effects.

4 out of 5 stars Snowfall will Have Your Heart Race.......2005-03-31

After reading this book and Out of the Dark by Sharon Sala, she has escalated to the top of my favorite author list. This is definitely one you won't be able to put down!

Caitlin Bennett is a wealthy, beautiful author who receives a series of notes from a crazed fan. As the notes become more threatening, Caitlin calls the police only to be told that nothing will come of them. When Caitlin is shoved in front of a moving truck and lands in the hospital, her editor, Aaron Workman, calls in his stepbrother, Connor McKee, to help protect Caitlin. Connor owns a security company and becomes Caitlin's bodyguard.

Sounds like a typical thriller, right? Nope, the crux of the matter is that Connor and Caitlin have never gotten along. The barbs tossed at each other keep the reader entertained while Sala sets up the mystery.

Murder victims continue to show up, as do the letters to Caitlin. When the police realize that these victims have an uncanny resemblance to Caitlin, they begin to believe there might be something behind the correspondence and deduce that Caitlin is the main target. Great, they finally figure it out, but can they protect her? Luckily she has Connor to do it and he has his hands full with that job.

The character development is excellent. We are introduced to two dynamic personalities and shown that the struggle to be civil between the two can lead to a few amusing situations. It can also lead to romance without reducing the strong wills to anything less. And Aaron's character is just fun - he's the perfect ditzy friend that every girl needs in her life - Sala captured his essence flawlessly. Kenny, the publicist that thinks he is Mr. Wonderful, leaves everyone wanting to just smack some sense into him. I wanted to shout that he needed to get over himself. Character development on Kenny has the reader relating to others who think they are God's Gift to the World and even groaning out loud at some of his antics.

It is a bit strange, however, in that murders take place during storms. I wondered if it was Sala's way of saying she was tired of winter? With the winter we've had this year, many can relate to that way of thinking!

SNOWFALL is very suspenseful and intriguing. It's very difficult to put down once you have started reading. If you can get through this one without having your heart race, you're tougher than most.

3 out of 5 stars Very average read.......2004-09-05

I am an avid reader of all types of novels but I love romance. I have read quite a few romance novels and this was basically very very average. Meet Caitlin Bennett poor little rich girl who has no one in her life. She is a mystery writer and keeps herself locked up in her penthouse apartment. She starts to receive hate mail and is pushed in front of a car. At this point she knows that someone is stalking her. Her friend asks his brother to come protect her, and enter Mac, the bodyguard. These two have never liked each other and now are forced to spend time together until the stalker and of course later we find out he is a killer is caught.

I don't expect much of a plot when I read a romance. In fact, I'm used to the plots being "corny" and "underdeveloped." But not only was this story line silly as a "mystery" but the romance was awful. The Caitlin character spent most of the time whining, but you were supposed to like her because she treated her chaffeaur like one of the family. She's extremely wealthy and thinks someone is stalking her, but never bothers to hire private security. Her publisher gets a bomb threat and doesn't hire private security. When she is finally assaulted, one person comes to her rescue. This story had the usual flaws I find in many poorly written stories (e.g. the killer enters her apartment very easily through the roof). This was so hard to swallow - how many of the rich and famous have their homes poorly equipped so just about any nutcase off the street could enter. How many rich people would stay terriorized and not hire anyone to protect them? (The answer is zero, only a poor person would stay terrorized for months). Also the heroine's actions are just plain dumb (e.g. going on tv) And finally the killer was so predictable you knew who he would be in the first few chapters. Because in every poorly written story I've read, that's who the killer usually is. Very average read.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly satisfying.......2007-08-09

KM Peyton has been one of my favorite writers since I first discovered A Pattern of Roses and then the Pennington books back in the '80s. She is incredibly adept at creating characters we want to be close to, and then placing them in a world so complete and so realistic that reading her work is like traveling. SNOWFALL, terribly ripped by the professional critics, is more of Peyton's magic at work. Charlotte and Milo, Mar and Kitty, all of them are very like people we know, or would very much like to know, and the details of their lives can be followed like those of dear friends. And Peyton is not shy about breaking a reader's heart. Don't pay attention to the critics who apparently were reading another book with the same title. Read it and weep.

5 out of 5 stars Fine reading for any young adult........2007-08-07

Teen Charlotte knows little about the world outside her vicarage childhood, and her grandfather has arranged to have her marry a man who repels her - but she's rebelling, and searching for her freedom. Set in Victorian England, SNOWFALL reveals a girl's struggle for independence and her own life, and is fine reading for any young adult.

    5 out of 5 stars surprising ............2007-07-03

i have read hundreds, if not more, books in my life. And never has my heart been broken by a book. until this one. It was perfect and intense and despite what professional "reviewers" say - wonderful. Everyone should read this book. It is worth every minute of heartbreak.

5 out of 5 stars this book is a must read!.......2007-05-15

I personally loved this book.i thought the characters were well described so by midway through the book you got to know each characters individual personality.through the book charlotte slowly grows up and as her romance with milo deepen so do marrs feelings for her so she is tied between two men that love her.she soon realizes what she thought as love can turn out as a simple fling. If yoru into romance then this book is a wonderful book.its intruiging, passionate, and suspenseful youll find that once into it you cannot seem to put the book down

    5 out of 5 stars Utterly captivating.......2007-02-23

I've read some of the other review, and truly, it's great. Not horrible. The characters are loveable and completely real. I seriously cried for days by the ending. It's great. It gets you right in the heart. Sad but beautiful. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Simple But Engaging & Fun!.......2000-09-22

Anne Rockwell writes some of the best concept books for toddlers. The simple language flows smoothly from page to page and is complemented by clean, uncluttered pencil and watercolor illustrations. This is a great book to share with even the youngest reader as the winter season approaches. My 2-year old daughter enjoyed this book very much as she did other Anne Rockwell books: "Apples & Pumpkins", "At the Beach", and "Nice and Clean" which share the same high quality of writing and illustration. It is great to know that there are writers of children's books like her who do not rely on "cuteness" to teach or tell a story.
