3 out of 5 stars Its Alright........2007-08-30

Its a very good source, and considered a bible by some, but is strictly in metric and also relies on software instead of thorough calculations at certain points. I dont have a hatred of metric, but I wasnt raised on trained in the system so it'll make you feel quite left out if youre not an SI guy/girl. As to the software comment, its very true and sometimes examples skip steps at which point the author jumps from A to D to M to Z with little or no explanation.

2 out of 5 stars so-so.......2007-01-16

I regret this purchase. If you want to know how to do these calculations...do not buy this book. If you would like to blindly use a diskette to solve problems...well by all means purchase now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Working Reference.......2007-01-03

This book is an excellent working reference for any civil/geotechnical engineer. The example problems are very well written. The charts and graphs are easily read and very clearly printed. Excellent section on the design and analysis of segmental retaining walls. Beware of some other sites selling versions of this book printed overseas and sold here.

4 out of 5 stars CLASSICAL TEXTBOOK for GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS .......2006-03-01

I'm a civil engineer involved in the design of large hydraulic structures.

We still use Bowles in our firm for designing many structures including retaining walls of different kinds, cellular cofferdams, buildings foundations, etc.

It includes many examples, easy to understand, and many charts and tables very useful for the designer.

4 out of 5 stars A fundamental reference.......2003-07-09

If you have only a few geotechnical engineering books, this should be one of them. As a practicing geotechnical engineer I use this book 2 to 3 times per week. It includes the theory and essential reference material.

      Book Description

Large surveys are becoming increasingly available for public use, and researchers are often faced with the need to analyse complex survey data to address key scientific issues. For proper analysis it is also important to be aware of the different aspects of the design of complex surveys. Practical Methods for Design and Analysis of Complex Surveys features intermediate and advanced statistical techniques for use in designing and analysing complex surveys. This extensively updated edition features much new material, and detailed practical exercises with links to a Web site, helping instructors and enabling use for distance learning.

Practical Methods for Design and Analysis of Complex Surveys provides a useful practical resource for researchers and practitioners working in the planning, implementation or analysis of complex surveys and opinion polls, including business, educational, health, social, and socio-economic surveys and official statistics. In addition, the book is well suited for use on intermediate and advanced courses in survey sampling.

      Download Description

"Statistical complex survey analysis is a means to analyse the results, and gain information about a large population based on a complex survey of a sample of that population. A complex survey is a sample survey that divides the population into subgroups and collecting information from clusters within each subgroup and combining the results. Since the publication of the first edition in 1994, the field has changed considerably and the topic is now relevant beyond the narrow circle of survey statisticians. With large surveys becoming increasingly available for public use, researchers with little experience in survey methods are often faced with analyzing data from surveys to address scientific and programmatic issues. This practical book fills a niche by providing advanced statistical techniques for use in survey analysis, making complex surveys accessible to those working in statistics, business, economics, and the health and social sciences. 5 out of 5 stars A must-have book for sufficient coverage on sampling theory and practice.......2007-09-13

This is a book I hope I knew when I was asked so many times about sampling from others. It is written in simple language yet covers widely the major topics in sampling. Its layout is suitable for either those who are new to the sampling to pave in their own pace from chapter to chapter including exrecises, or those professionals like myself to jump in a particular topic for a quick refresh or ideas. The best part of the book is: it provides computer code to the examples in major application softwares such as S-PLUS and SAS. Although there is no code for SPSS, popular amongst market researchers, the translation from SAS into SPSS is quite convenient.

5 out of 5 stars excellent sampling textbook.......2004-12-16

this is an excellent book on sampling. it accommadates all reader levels (undergrad, graduate, practioner and theorist). i can't comment too much about the theoretical aspects of the book because that is not my focus. but for those who want to learn about sampling and use it for their jobs or school projects, i cannot think of a better text. i find myself referring to the text constantly. her examples are relatively clear and easy to follow, in my opinion. she covers cluster sampling and complex surveys (variance calculations) in depth and with great clarity.

2 out of 5 stars I've seen better math textbooks........2004-10-30

I took a sampling course last year and I must say this text on its own is terrbily deficient. Few completed examples, no solutions at the back of the book, no solutions manual provided to the professor and a horribly vague and sometimes irrelevant exercise section gives any student using this text a difficult time to read/learn.

I suggest sourcing out another before using this one. A bland reference at most.

5 out of 5 stars A well-written guide to sampling design and analysis........2004-10-19

Sharon Lohr does a great job of covering the subject of sampling, which seems to be overlooked in most curricula even though the need for it is ubiquitous across disciplines. This text is appropriate at an intermediate level such as third or fourth year undergraduate or first-year graduate study. The math notation appears to be an attempt to bridge between the notation used at the introductory level and that which appears in graduate texts such as Greene. I found it relatively easy to follow, but it might not be so easy for someone who is seeing it for the first time. The best feature of the book is its comprehensive coverage of the subject. If you have a question about sampling, there is likely a concise and understandable answer available in this text.

      2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2004-03-10

This book is not very student-friendly. Over-all, the book is an easy read and the examples in each section are helpful. However, the notation used by Lohr differs from the notation used by the statistical community (and professors) which makes applying her text to real life problems or other classes complicated. Also, the questions at the end of the chapters are asked in a vague manner. I am never sure what the questions are really asking. There is no answer key to the questions in the text, so your guess is as good as mine...

        Book Description

A practical guide to selection, screening, and multiple comparisons

This book addresses experimenters who have knowledge of classical experimental design methodology and expands their repertoire beyond hypothesis testing by providing statistical methods appropriate for selection, screening, and multiple comparisons. It concentrates on three types of procedures: selection procedures that use the "indifference-zone" approach, screening procedures using the "subset" approach, and multiple comparison procedures involving normal means. This is the first book, specifically designed for practitioners, to bring into focus many developments in the field previously covered only in university courses. It also presents new results on the comparison of procedures that have been obtained specifically for this volume.

This self-contained volume describes methods for designing experiments when the scientific objective is selection of best treatments, screening a set of treatments, and multiple comparisons among treatment means. The book emphasizes procedures appropriate in a variety of practical settings including those that require blocking and randomization restriction. It compares the relative merits of procedures when several different methods can be used in the same circumstances.

Providing practical guidance for experimenters in agriculture, engineering, medicine, and other empirical sciences, this book may also be used for a one-semester graduate course in selection methodology or to augment traditional courses in experimental design.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Bechhofer's last book on ranking and selection.......2002-01-03

Robert Bechhofer along with Milton Sobel pioneered the concept of rank and selecting the population with the largest mean or a subset of populations with the largest means. This is a practical alternative to the usual analysis of variance and multiple contrasts approach (ANOVA). ANOVA methods just determine if there are differences among populations but researchers are often interested in knowing which population has the largest (best) mean. Ranking and selection procedures consider the selection of the population with the best mean or a ranking of the populations based on the means. It is formulated in a way to pick the right populatiion (i.e. the one with the largest population mean) or subset of populations based on either maximizing the probability of correct selection or by use of indifference zones in hypothesis testing. This material has been covered in Bechhofer's treatise with Kiefer and Sobel in 1968, the text by Gupta and Panchapakesan in 1979 and Gibbons, Olkin and Sobel in 1977. This text is an update on the theory and applications and differs from the previous texts in that it also considers issues of statistical design.

The theory has been well developed over a period of the past 30 years but has not been taught in applied statistics course and inspite of its practicality it is not applied nealry as much as the analysis of variance even though it is sometimes more appropriate. This has been a frustration for Bechhofer and his colleagues. This book is another attempt to get the methods more widely known and used. Part of the problem is the lack of software. Tables as provided in the text can be exceedingly complex. The authors provide FORTRAN programs to carry out the procedures. Unfortunately in today's computing environment it will take inclusion in major statistical software packages to get these methods the usage that they probably deserve.

The text is authoritative and well-written. It could be used for an intermediate level statistics course in ranking and selection methods and designs. It is an excellent reference source. Unfortunately Bechhofer has since past away so it is now the job of his colleagues and students to promote these methods.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A374143. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Direct digital direction finding (DF) antennas will allow an incoming signal to be digitally encoded at the antenna with high dynamic range (14 bits approx. equal 86 dB) without the use of down conversion that is typically necessary. As a shipboard DF device, it also allows for the encoding of wide band, high power signals (e.g., +/- 43 volts) that can often appear on shipboard antennas due to the presence of in band transmitters that are located close by. This design utilizes three pulsed laser driven Mach-Zehnder optical interferometers to sample the RF signal. Each channel requires only 6 bit accuracy (64 comparators) to produce an Optimum Symmetrical Number System (OSNS) residue representation of the input signal. These residues are then sent to a locally programmed Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for decoding into a 14 bit digital representation of the input RF voltage. Modern day FPGA devices are rapidly becoming the state of the art in programmable logic. The inclusion of on chip flip flops allows for a fast and efficient pipelined approach to OSNS decoding. This thesis documents the first 14 bit digital antenna which utilizes an FPGA algorithm as a method of OSNS decoding. This design uses FPGA processors for both OSNS decoding and Parity processing.
