Book Description

Companies must innovate to grow, but they often forget to look beyond their own brands. Take Sony, for example. Its success with consumer innovations like the Walkman blinded it to obvious changes in how, when, and where people wanted their music. Apple capitalized on those changes in demand with the iPod, providing a new way of listening to music and of managing one’s entire music library.

This book explains how you can spot these opportunities that are hidden in plain sight. It introduces the demand-first innovation and growth model that will show you how to become an unbiased observer of people’s consumption and usage behaviors. Refining this skill helps companies generate organic growth through new products, services, solutions, and experiences that truly enhance peoples’ lives. Revealing the innovative processes of such organizations as BMW, Proctor and Gamble, GE Healthcare, and Frito-Lay, Hidden in Plain Sight offers you a new approach to identifying and executing your company’s growth strategy.

5 out of 5 stars The Formula for Innovation and Growth.......2007-07-14

Erich Joachimsthaler provides a systematic approach to make marketing accountable for innovation and growth of BtoC and BtoB companies. We have seen the innovative business concept of share of customer evolve and being executed over the last years. Hidden in Plain Sight pushes that practice further to the concept of customer advantage, which means consequently managing impact and relevance, products and services have on customers daily lifes - on customers share of the day.

Erich Joachimsthaler formulates an explicit model, the demand-first innovation and growth model (DIG-Model), that illuminates the advantages of creating the demand landscape and sets a plan for action to specify the necessary effort to capture the relevant parts of the ecosystem of customer demand, reframes the specific business opportunity space, aligns business processes across all functions and sets the foundation for sustainable innovations and predictable growth.

As one reads the carefully selected international cases (e.g. Procter & Gamble, BMW, Apple, Deutsche Telekom, Volkswagen, NetFlix, Starbucks, General Electric, Sony, Allianz) reference is made to all parts of the DIG model and how all pieces have to work together to execute in business practice. Based on his deep insight and understanding of many industries, Erich Joachimsthaler proves his approach carefully and outlines, how innovation and growth can be systematically and replicable managed. That is why this book is relevant for people from many business functions and a variety of industries.

Thanks for this outstanding business book.

5 out of 5 stars The Invisibility of the Obvious.......2007-05-23

Erich Joachimsthaler offers what he claims is a "new model of strategic innovation for achieving profitable business growth" by abandoning "some of the tried and proven conventions of innovation, marketing, and strategy formulation" and by discarding "some of today's common assumptions and management practices and adopt a fresh way of planning an executing your strategies today and your innovation and growth strategies of tomorrow." The key word is "some" as he explains how.

After discussing "hidden opportunities to innovate and grow" in Part I, he focuses in Part II on several companies which exemplify a demand-first innovation and growth model (e.g. Frito-Lay, Allianz, GE Healthcare, and State Street) and then shifts his attention, in Part III, to various strategies by which to realize customer advantage.

As the title of this book suggests, Joachimsthaler asserts - and I agree - that many senior-level executives lack the ability to see - really see - "the opportunities presented by the changing consumption or usage behaviors of people [their organizations are] trying to serve. [They] cannot spot or recognize and pursue the abundant opportunities that exist in plain sight." Why? Joachimsthaler suggests several reasons which include routine but disparate processes which fragment a company's view of its customers, perpetuation of the status quo which limits a company's perspective on its competitive marketplace, a mistaken belief that "the key to growth lies in identifying customers' needs and wants [and/or] providing solutions for the tasks or jobs it knows customers must take on and get done," and an "inside-out" perspective which results in what Theodore Levitt once characterized as "marketing myopia."

Joachimsthaler suggests three lessons that can be learned from companies such as NetFlix, Sony, and Starbucks:

1. Position existing or new products or services at natural intersections of customers' consumption and use behaviors;

2. Change or enhance customers' daily routines and create transformative experiences around activities, projects, and tasks in new and welcome ways; and

3. Deliver on previously unleashed or unarticulated desires, dreams, fantasies, and urges in the social-cultural context of people's lives.

The demand-first innovation (DIG) model can be of substantial benefit to any organization (regardless of size or nature) but it would be a fool's errand to attempt to apply all of the ideas that Joachimsthaler presents. Rather, It would be a fool's errand for anyone who reads this book to attempt to apply all of the ideas that Joachimsthaler presents. Rather, he suggests that those who read this book clearly identify their organization's key demand-relevant assets and make full use of them, rigorously evaluate and develop their organization's distinctive capabilities deployed to manage those assets, choose only those major strategic initiatives that force the integration of all demand-facing processes, and "build the culture" with innovation initiatives at all levels and within all areas throughout what should be a demand-driven enterprise.

Joachimsthaler calls for nothing less than "the activation of demand-first growth platforms by whatever means [to] help customers absorb or assimilate an innovation, or retool old ways of doing things, into their daily life or work experiences." Only then can an organization find and execute its next big growth strategy.

Book Description

Even for the religious, life is full of questions: What is faith? Can my life be more satisfying? How can I deepen my walk with Christ? What does it mean to be happy? These bubble and boil underneath the surface of our everyday life. And though we ignore them, we know they point us to realms of wisdom or even mystery-to something more.

Author Mark Buchanan asked these same questions. "I want more, God," he prayed-and the answer was more than he was looking for. It was right there, hidden in plain sight among the syllables and syntax of a few words of advice from the apostle Peter. With time and experience, Buchanan learned to tease it out, this secret of more, and he wrote a book about it: Hidden in Plain Sight. The answer, he discovered, is an investigation of the cross. The answer is an excavation of the virtues. The answer urges us passionately to "make every effort." And, Buchanan tells us, the answer is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars As functional as it is enjoyable.......2007-08-01

As a thinking Christ-follower, I struggle with the delicate balance between faith and works. I understand and appreciate God's grace, but He must be impressed by my efforts at piety...mustn't He?

With his usual deftness, Mark Buchanan presents a flowing exegesis of 2 Peter 1:1-9 that actually gives me hope in my aforementioned struggle. Buchanan is my favorite Christian author. He is a gifted wordsmith with a winsome delivery, yet his work presents a functional practicality and I reference it often. "Hidden in Plain Sight" is different than anything Buchanan has done before and he seems to be maturing as a writer. I especially enjoyed "The Petrine Diaries," behind-the-scenes glimpses into Peter's soul which added insight and context to his exhortation. When I finished the last page, I found myself looking forward to Mark Buchanan's next offering. I am certain it will be another cherished gift to the church.

4 out of 5 stars Seven Ways / One Path to a Better Life.......2007-07-26

The somewhat obscured virtues 2 Peter sets-forth, if adopted and practiced faithfully, assure you of a better life with Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Amen and amen........2007-06-06

The writer Diane Ackerman once wrote that for too many people, "Life is something that happens to them while they wait for death." In HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT, Mark Buchanan explores seven ancient virtues that are found in the writings of the apostle Peter. In doing so, Buchanan invites us to pay attention to our lives, to really live, not just exist.

The life we've always wanted, Buchanan reminds us, is already here. It's not later, like after the kids are grown, or we've gone to counseling, or gotten a degree. It's now. We have everything we need. And there are seven virtues that, according to the Apostle Peter, if we add to our lives will make us more fruitful and productive. But first we have to search out these virtues and apply them.

What are the virtues? We need knowledge, the key to efficiency and productivity, and for it to be detoxified by goodness, which renders knowledge beneficial and not impressive. Add self-control; learn to pray. Persevere. Become Godly (Godliness, he notes, is "beautiful when it is authentic, and revolting when it's pretense.") Be kind. Love each other. Virtue's "groundwork" is faith, he writes. Its lifeblood is the Spirit.

As in his previous books, such as THE REST OF GOD and THINGS UNSEEN, Buchanan crafts lovely prose and careful word choices to get his message across. "...the Spirit is a wind. I'm learning to run with his gentle pummeling on my back, keeping me from growing weary. Some days, I spread my arms like wings and catch that wind beneath them, and for moments I fly. I fly."

Buchanan's vulnerability, often poignant personal stories, careful incorporation of scripture, illustrations and quotes from such diverse writers as Annie Dillard, G.K. Chesterton, and Pat Conroy enrich and illuminate his message. Every page is a challenge if we take it to heart. And we can't be proud of these virtues; rather, each virtue must come with an underlying humility.

In one interesting passage of the book, Buchanan wrestles with a concept that I've always struggled with. When we know that whenever we make a decision, the fallout of it might have negative consequences, how do we move forward? For example, we send care packages with toothbrushes in them to impoverished children in Africa, and the local toothbrush vendor loses his business. Or the church decides to invest in new choir robes, and the local food pantry can't feed 30 families because they are short on funds. It can make you crazy! Buchanan's advice, riffing on Martin Luther's "sin boldly," is helpful: "Don't anguish over every little thing. Do what needs doing and leave the outcome to God."

Something different: Buchanan integrates "The Petrine Diaries," 11 entries drawn from the life of Peter plus three short fictional stories that are tagged onto each section of the book, which he includes to "stir up your imagination." Although his nonfiction is stronger than his fiction, these short stories help flesh out the person of Peter on which the book revolves.

This is a message that will go straight to your heart if you let it, make you ask yourself questions about the way you are living, if you are risking enough, if you really want enough of God. I love Buchanan's hope for his book: "May it disrupt us, turn us upside down in order to live right-side up.... May it help us live with such holy vigor that when we're gone, our epitaph will be, "They really lived." May we say, "God, I want more of you." Amen and amen.

With his fifth book, Buchanan proves to be one of the best Christian authors you've never heard of. He writes with humor and grace. He makes a lofty promise in "Hidden in Plain Sight," offering "the secret of more." More what? More rules to Christian living?

Buchanan states up front that this book is about practicing virtue. However, he quickly sidesteps Victorian stereotypes and invites us to explore dark, haunting, beautiful, and life-changing truths contained in a few verses from II Peter. He leads us through these precepts, connecting the dots of virtue, building one upon the other, until we have a clear picture of what it means to have godly love. Along the way, Buchanan gives us insights into this outspoken disciple. Peter is more human than we remember--and more godly than we might assume. Peter shows us an example of what to do and what not to do.

Buchanan uses this example to great effect. He offers hope for those who feel discouraged in their Christian progress, as well as correction for those who have lost their focus, or become spiritual workaholics. He raises questions. He deals honestly with life's difficulties. In a deceptively light 200 pages, he gives meaty bites of practical theology, bites that require thorough chewing to produce the most efficient nourishment. Don't rush through these pages. Mull them over. Enjoy each savory word picture. These concepts are ones to live by.

Mark Buchanan is a unique writer. He writes in a style that is "out of the box" thinking. He keeps me off balance in a good way. As a result I find myself actively engaged with the message he is seeking to convey.

Barry Grosskopf has incredible insite into the dynamics of intergenerational miscommunication. So often, knowing the story changes everything. This is an excellent read for anyyone who ever encountered conflict with an close family member. In other words, it's an excellent choice for everyone. It's on the top 10 list of important books that I've read and I've been reading for 55 years.

Psychiatrist Barry Grosskopf draws upon his years of experience and his patient histories in Hidden in Plain Sight: Getting to the Bottom of Puzzling Emotions, a guide to understanding how powerful emotions and emotional responses can be formed, why and how trauma ranging from addiction or sexual abuse to PTSD can be spread intergenerationally, how intimate relationships such as marriage can further the healing process, and why it is important to have compassion and understanding for one's parents, no matter how atrociously they have behaved, before one can effectively and consciously embrace one's own healing ability. Written in plain terms for readers of all backgrounds, Hidden in Plain Sight is a highly informed and informative look at how powerful emotional responses affect the biological wiring of the human brain and nervous system, particularly in the case of childhood (or even infancy) incidents leaving a lasting imprint, with useful strategies for learning to adjust to and cope with the fallout from trauma or abuse. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Freud's Blindness.......2007-02-08

Early in this remarkable analysis of why people are the way they are, Dr. Grosskopf lets the reader have it. Although Freud has become an easy target, still he did invent his discipline, and he has much to teach. But he suffered, as this author so clearly writes, "The restricted focus of self-analysis [that] left Freud with substantial gaps in his own self-understanding." With a cunning that William James would admire, Grosskopf reaches into the wisdom of ancient texts, and reminds us that it isn't always just about us. What informs us is what went before, and thus it is that the generational influences-often so unseen to us-are, nonetheless, still in there. Kandel's new biology of memory substantiates this idea.
Freud never considered his work finished, and was overly influenced by his own neurotic clientele. HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT is another step down the road that began in Vienna.

Dr. Barry Grosskopf makes his home on Vashon Island in Washington with his wife. His psychiatric practice focuses on the underserved, underprivileged and difficult-to-treat patients. His book is written with stories of some of his patients, their pain and healing. In this easy to read book, Dr. Grosskopf describes how all of us, whether seldom or frequently feel an unexplained pain within along with sadness.

Few of us have had enough open communication with our parents or grandparents to be able to empathize with the struggles and triumphs they have endured. However, by questioning them or other elders in our extended family, the answers may be found to our present pain. Unknown to our conscience mind, this understanding could be the key to peace within our nuclear family.

The traumas we endure are many, from war to domestic violence. When left unspoken and hidden within ourselves, the scars of this trauma can show its effect across generations. Through understanding our parents and their parents' pain, an understanding of our fear and pain can come to light. Whether this pain manifests itself from us to our children or spouses, healing and freedom from the shackles of trauma can occur.

The message spoken the loudest within this book is that we are not required to love our parents and grandparents. Rather, by understanding how they felt with their personal problems and trauma brings understanding to us for their actions. Throughout our lives, we need to ask ourselves, "Where are you?" We will often find that our reaction to a situation is being shaped by what happened a generation or possibly two ago. By acknowledging this reaction, our future actions can be changed to healing and not continuing they cycle of trauma.

Whoever is currently dealing with unresolved anger and pain would find words or wisdom and a guide to healing by reading, "Hidden in Plain Sight." It is especially geared towards those who have suffered traumatic losses and pain.

Do you understand how your parents really felt as a child or young adult? What trauma, such as war, poverty or abuse did they suffer? By finding the answer to these questions, and truly understanding how they felt, you will begin your own self-healing.

        Book Description

Julie E. Czerneda's acclaimed Web Shifters series continues with the story of Esen-the last survivor of a unique alien race. Able to take on the form of any creature she observes, Esen has long since broken the cardinal rule of her species: noninterference.

        Download Description

Picco's moon was where it all began for Esen-alit-Quar, Youngest of Ersh's Web. It was here where Ersh, the Oldest, had chosen to make her home; here, too, where Esen received her early training as a shapeshifter and a member of the Web. When Ersh's Web was destroyed, Esen and her human friend Paul survived, and together they founded Esen's Web, a group composed initially of the two of them but one which expanded slowly to include a chosen few selected by Paul. For in their universe there were all too many species ready to destroy Esen, should they discover her true nature. Still, despite the need for concealment, life had been good to Esen and Paul. They now had well-established identities, a thriving business, and numerous friends. It seemed as though they'd finally created a safe haven for themselves. At least until they received word that someone was mining Picco's Moon, desecrating Ersh's Mountain. Esen and Paul had no choice. They had to go to Picco's Moon and put a stop to the situation. But before they could even set out, they found themselves under attack on every front. Their carefully built haven gone, and loyal friends suddenly transformed into vengeful enemies, was there anywhere Esen and Paul could run, anyone they could turn to for help, any way to defeat a foe they couldn't even identify?

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as her other books.......2005-02-12

This is the final book in 'The Webshifter Trilogy' and what a disappointment it is. Although the trilogy was never going to be a heavyweight of literature, the first two books did at least provide enough of a story to keep the interest going and provide a good light sci-fi read.
Esen is a shape shifter but no one outside of her small 'web' of shifters must know this. In book one Esen becomes 'orphaned' after the other 5 members of her web are killed leaving her the only one of her kind left. The first and second book tell the story of Esen and the fight she has to survive and yet keep her true identity secret from all but the one friend she has made in the whole universe.
Unfortunately book three is yet more of the same and is repetitive. It's not that it's a terrible book or badly written...more that it feels like the author has run out of steam somewhat. If you have read the other 2 books you may want to read this purely to tie up a couple of loose ends but be warned, it isn't nearly as good as the others.

5 out of 5 stars Top reason to have a book series.......2004-02-28

This author is simply beyond words- If at all possible, Czerneda just gets better & better with each book she writes. In the third of this series, we get to return to the universe where our favorite alien Esen resides and get to see our little blue blob grow up- and get one hell of a great story to boot. Esen-alit-quar is simply one of the most beautifully written characters I have ever come across, a being so different & unique but so vulnerable, sweet and good that she personifies the phrase "never judge a book by it's cover." You never lose sight of her being an alien, but she is so endearingly "human" that you cannot help but love her. It is characters like this that make me still read Sci-fi. I only wish all authors had one ounce of the skill that Czerneda has in her craftsmanship. If you can only get one book, definitely get this one. The story & the character will become a part of you.

3 out of 5 stars Not anywhere near as strong as the first two books.......2003-06-23

"Hidden in Sight" is a disappointment. It does not live up to the promise of the first two books in the series, "Beholder's Eye" and "Changing Visions," and it brought back someone I was hoping was safely dead from the first book -- Skalet.

Skalet is not a likable person by any means. She does lots of things for the wrong reasons, and never did understand Esen. To have _her_ be the last surviving member of the original six (aside from Esen) made me feel cheated. And I really didn't like her being in this book.

Since she's such an integral part of the book, that might explain why I mostly didn't like it. The ending is rather hopeful, I guess, but it was a trial and a struggle to get there. And, frankly, I put the book down for a good week and a half before I went back to it, and had no trouble finishing the thing, with no need to re-read anything for greater clarity.

Note that my husband has a dissenting view; his point is that, as an author, if you can delineate your world so well that it sticks in the reader's brain, especially if you don't like one of the characters, you're doing your job. :)

At any rate, because I dislike Skalet so very much, and because I don't like how she interacts with Esen (she pushes her around, as older siblings often do), I had a very hard time getting through this novel.

I still like Esen and Paul, and their relationship; I liked most of the other people in this book, even the flawed Kearn who's _still_ trying to rehabilitate himself. But as I did not like Skalet, it made it harder to buy into the premise of this book.

As for how to rate the whole series, I'd give the series four stars. It's a good series, and other folks might not hate Skalet as much as I do. ;-) And I really like the premise (it's extremely original and well done), and hope that Ms. Czerneda will write more books in this universe (hopefully without Skalet, or with a reformed Skalet that isn't as repulsive).

5 out of 5 stars Another awesome book by Julie Czerneda.......2003-05-25

Hidden in Sight was one of those books that I picked up to read at 8pm one night, put it down at midnight only because I had to go to work the next day. I read it every spare moment I could through the day until I finished it that night. Just like I did with Beholders Eye and Changing Vision. The story of Essen and Paul is just as riveting and enjoyable as the first two and the new characters just add to the depth of the novel.
Do yourself a favor and read Hidden in Sight. I agree with the other reviewers you should also read Beholders Eye and Changing Vision to give you background. Actually, just read anything that Julie Czerneda has written you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Humor, adventure, colorful aliens and appealing heroine!.......2003-05-17

HIDDEN is a space opera of the best kind. While stand-alone, the book continues the evolution of Esen from the previous Webshifter novels. Esen, a very young shifter by her race's standards, and her human friend Paul, live in careful disguise to avoid the attention of the curious and the hostile. However, when they are suddenly assailed by hidden enemies, it's clear that their anonimity is no protection, and their subsequent quest to survive and counter their opponents allows the plot to explore both the exotic but fascinating aliens, and Esen's own maturing character.

The author populates her worlds with appealing aliens: they are truly not humans, but are nonetheless three-dimensional despite enormous biological and cultural diversity. The humor is well-woven into the plot, and provides a welcome relief from the tension and danger. And last, and most important, Esen herself, impulsive, well-intentioned, making mistakes and redeeming herself and those around her--a perfect combination of vulnerability and strength.

A delightful coming-of-age story for a three-hundred-year-old adolescent blue blob.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed account of 17th century Quakerism.......2004-05-15

"Hidden in Plain Sight: Quaker Women's Writings, 1650-1700" was an expensive purchase for me, but it certainly does live up to the cost.

As an anthology of Quaker women's writings in the seventeenth century, "Hidden in Plain Sight: Quaker Women's Writings, 1650-1700" does an excellent job of illustrating the lives and theological perspectives of numerous women who joined what was for its time very much a radical sect. The writings are explained with a clarity that would allow even a beginner to Quakerism to understnad very clearly the character of seventeenth century England.

Yet, at the same time many of the pitfalls undoubtedly present in modern Quakerism are utterly absent here. The theological reflection, the reflection of the presence of the sacred, is completely central throughout all these writings: this serves to ground them in a truly deep spirituality. The result is that we see exactly how the women felt they were being guided, rather than them being guided by outside sources.

Moreover, there is more than a peek into the past in the modern-looking text of the book, and the introductions and long lists of petitioners are a delightfor the historian.

Difficult to find (Pendle Hill have wanted to reprint it) but worth the money nonetheless.

          Book Description

The history of Aboriginal people in Canada taught in schools and depicted in the media tends to focus on Aboriginal displacement from native lands and the consequent social and cultural disruptions they have endured. Collectively, they are portrayed as passive victims of European colonization and government policy, and, even when well intentioned, these depictions are demeaning and do little to truly represent the role Aboriginal peoples have played in Canadian life. Hidden in Plain Sight adds another dimension to the story, showing the extraordinary contributions Aboriginal peoples have made - and continue to make - to the Canadian experience.

From treaties to contemporary arts and literatures, Aboriginal peoples have helped to define Canada and have worked to secure a place of their own making in Canadian culture. For this volume, editors David R. Newhouse, Cora J. Voyageur, and Daniel J.K. Beavon have brought together leading scholars and other impassioned voices, and together, they give full treatment to the Aboriginal contribution to Canada's intellectual, political, economic, social, historic, and cultural landscapes. Included are profiles of several leading figures such as actor Chief Dan George, artist Norval Morrisseau, author Tomson Highway, activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, and politician Phil Fontaine, among others. Canada simply would not be what it is today without these contributions. The first of two volumes, Hidden in Plain Sight is key to understanding and appreciating Canadian society and will be essential reading for generations to come.
