4 out of 5 stars entertaining contemporary romance .......2007-03-24

Chicago lawyer Nick McAllister arrives in nearby Maplefield to destroy the reputation of a do-gooder, the Protestant Reverend Annie Lane. He detests the woman on two accounts though he never met her before. She destroyed his half-brother Jason Vonkall who tried to commit suicide due to her when he drove his car into Lake Michigan and her hypocrisy reminds him of his father.

At first sight the pair are attracted to one another, but he is stunned by how virginally different she seems than what he expected; he assumes like his father she is a great performer. Nick "blackmails' Annie to visit Jason, who admits he never met her before. Jason explains to her about meeting her sister, Tanya, the spoiled actress known as the "world's sexiest viper" and insists he was not trying to kill himself. As her flock begin to whisper about her indiscretion with Nick, she falls in love with him; he reciprocates but remains at best an agnostic skeptic when it comes to God's existence and an atheist when it comes to organized religions like she preaches even as Tanya's Hollywood actions involving her druggy spouse and a protective cop will soon come to roost in the Midwest.

LANE TO HEAVEN is an entertaining contemporary romance with some suspense (with a support character named Hardball what would one expect) that comes late in the story line. The lead couple is an interesting pairing of a skeptic (hopefully my brother-in-law Stephen does not read this, but he is a lawyer) and a believer whose lives intertwine due to the antics of siblings. Fans will enjoy this fine tale in which Nick learns that love is the LANE TO HEAVEN on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Annie Get Your Man!.......2007-03-21

Annie Lane does her best to maintain a spotless reputation as a small-town preacher. She makes it her business to be a good example of clean living, especially to a troubled teen. When Nick McAllister arrives to exact revenge for something Annie didn't even do, everything she has worked for is jeopardized.

Nick thinks he sees Annie for who she really is: the woman who drove his brother to attempt suicide. The son of a hypocritical preacher, he aims to show everyone what lies beneath her Godly demeanor.

What begins as a case of mistaken identity quickly turns into something more, as the pressures of community, obligations, relatives, and emerging love push Annie and Nick into new territory.

Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always engaging, LANE TO HEAVEN is not your typical love story. At first blush, readers might expect something of the inspirational variety, but this is a contemporary romance--one that will appeal to a broad readership.

Daniel beautifully illustrates small-town life and the people that come with it. Besides Annie and Nick, there is a fair number of supporting cast. While many authors struggle with balancing so many personalities, Daniel succeeds in making each one unique and memorable.

Pick up LANE TO HEAVEN for fresh writing from a debut novelist.

    so good bye for now

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves 10 stars!.......2001-01-22

Well, I have to say that this was the best Young Jedi Knights book to come along in a while. Oh, but don't get me wrong, they're all good, but a few definitly stand above the others. Namely, Lightsabers, Jedi Under Siege, Jedi Bounty, and The Emperor's plague. And now Trouble on Cloud City has joined the ranks of the great. In this book, Lando askes Jacen, Jaina, Lowie, Tenel Ka, Anja, and Em Teedee to come with him to Cloud City to help supervise a new amusement park he is building there. When they get there however, they find that Lando's partner has been murdered, and they set out to find who did it. Anja knows of course, or at least guesses that her master Czethros is at work and she struggles on many moral points concerning her new friends, and her growing adiction to Andris Spice. Actually, in this book I found myself softening a bit towards Anja, who I previously hated. I still don't like her nearly as much as the other characters, but I began to realize that she is a victim is her own right, since it isn't her fault she was mislead and used and duped into Andris. Also, this book focused a lot on Tenel Ka, who is my favorite character in the series, and allowed us to get inside her, and see her thoughts and feelings in a way that has not been done since the masterpiece of Lightsabers. Her reaction when Jacen fell of Cloud City was heartbreaking, and I'll confess, that the scene where they all thought that they would never see him again almost had me in tears, and I never, EVER cry over books or movies or anything. I liked how this book let us see how much Tenel Ka truly cares about Jacen. Speaking of Jacen, his crush on Anja seems to have ended, which may in fact be what opened me up to her a bit, since I was always adamently against that. Anyway, I would recommend this series to any Star Wars fan, no matter what their age, even though they are generaly geared towards the 10-15 set. Also, this book would have a stronger effect on you and generally make more sense if you have read the previous twelve first, though if that is to much work, it is at least reccomeded that you read the one before it.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Star Wars you will love this series!.......2000-09-25

These are great books! This book is great for begginers. The story is great, the plot is great, it's very intriging. The book is about Jason, Jaina, and Tenel Ka, and Lobaca. Lando Calorisian is inviting the Young Jedi Knights to his Resort on Cloud City. The kids will come as long as they can bring their friend Anga Gilrado. But what they will find out is... You'll just have to read the book. It's a great book as a gift. It's a must for all Star Wars fans.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2000-08-19

Alright, I know YJK is supposed to be for the younger set, but I'm 15 and really do enjoy them. They shed new light on the characters of Jacen and Jaina, who, until YJK came along, were portrayed as bratty wonder children who kept getting kidnapped and escaping by dumb luck. OK, on to the actual book, sorry to ramble. This is the second in the Under Black Sun trilogy, which will be the last of the YJK books, at least for the time being. The kids are invited by Lando to spend time on Cloud City, bringing Anja Gallandro along. When she was introduced, I immediately understood the significance, since I have read the original Han Solo adventures back from 1979 and 1980. They arrive to find Lando's partner murdered by agents of Czethros, the Black Sun operative controlling Anja and out to get the YJK. Through a series of discoveries and things, the kids find out about Black Sun's involvement through several parties, most notably Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, who were supposed to be playing on CC. Concluding a bunch of near-death mishaps, the kids are reunited on Cloud City, but Anja is suffering Spice withdrawl, and the preview of Crisis at Crystal Reef indicates that she's really losing it. It's interesting that something that's a young adult book would deal with something like drug addiction, but it's well written and thoughtful. This is a good read for fans of the series, and even for you older folks looking for a nice light read.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to the Young Jedi Knights series!.......2000-08-12

Trouble on cloud city is an awesome continuation of the young Jedi Knights books. The way Kevin and Rebecca describe the character's feelings is what truly makes this book come alive. It brings out all of the subtle emotions that Tenel Ka feels towards Jacen and lets us know that deep down she really cares for him. This book is a must have and an excellent action packed read.

4 out of 5 stars The greatest horse race in the world.......2006-08-30

In the second installment of the Stravaganza series, we meet Georgia: a tom-boy school girl who is the newest person to join the Stravagante. Georgia soon becomes closely involved with the Stellata, the biggest horse race in Talia. There's rumor of a legendary winged horse that has been born to one of the contestants, but is true? And will the di Chimici find the horse and use it to tighten their grip on Talia forever?

Although this is not quite as good as the first, it is still really good. In addition to seeing old favorite characters (inlcuding Lucien from the first book) we meet and follow several new ones as well giving the book a fresh, new quality. Also a new feature, we meet several di Chimici and are able to see more into the lives of these powerful political plotters. A satisfying continuation of the series, don't miss it.

I raced through this book and its predecessor. They were both excellent; this one especially so. I really enjoyed it the first and second times through. It was easy to get into, had a followable plot and a satisfying conclusion. Can't wait for the next installment!

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the First.......2006-01-20

City of Stars was difficult if not impossible to sink into while reading. It seems strained and forced, and is commonly on the confusing side. The many characters switching between lands and worlds are hard to keep up with. The first was very well-written, on the contrary. The sequel, however, was alright, but very confusing.

2 out of 5 stars A good book for young kids, others skip it!.......2000-12-11

Out of all the books in this not very good series, this was probably one of the worst. Right behind Zorba the Hutt's Revenge and Queen of the Empire of course. As much as I enjoy it when the characters wander around jungle planets,(my favorite) this book had an unbelievable plot, weak diologue, and an extremely childish writing style. And that Ken is a nice boy and all, but a complete geek. An attempt to relate to the "normal kid" who would be reading this book. Also the characters from the movies are either grossly exagerated, or practicly nonexistant. All of them are warped and and barely recognizabal as Star Wars characters, most of all Luke. Kids twelve and under, for whom this book is intended for, probably won't mind any of that, though, adult and teenage Star Wars fans, such as myself will probably find them boring and silly.

      1 out of 5 stars It's not the author's fault!.......1999-06-15

The Lost City of the Jedi, a book that continues on from it's equally horrible predecessor The Glove of Darth Vader, has the same style and immature characteristics that prevent it from developing any real enjoyment.

      5 out of 5 stars A very good book........1998-06-28

This book had lots of action and excitement. It showed many different scenes and had a great plot. It included good characters and excellent pictures. An awesome book.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-06-18

This book is one of the worst Star Wars books I have ever read!!! There aren't any Jedi princes!!! And why does that Baji dude say everything in rhyme??? Don't you think that if there really was a "Lost City of the Jedi," the Rebels would have found it when they made their base there?? I advise you: if you are a true Star Wars fan, you will not read this book full of false information

Inside this colorful and easy-to-follow book, you'll find the 21 patterns for the beautiful Memory Bouquet applique quilt. And 12 quilting patterns. And much more that will please beginners and experts alike.

4 out of 5 stars Sar quilts II.......2007-03-17

Easy to follow directions, I like the fact that it has patterns from the past. We are using this in a quilt square block class I am taking.

4 out of 5 stars patchwork and applique from the k.c. star.......2006-06-21

this is apparently the second quilting book with patterns from the kansas city star newspaper archives of the 30s-40s.

now, in my opinion, just because a pattern was printed in the 30s does not necessarily make it a '30s' pattern--after all, a log cabin or lone star pattern printed in a magazine today is not a 21st century pattern. these basic patterns date to the 19th century. many of the pieced patterns in this book also date to the 19th or very early 20th century, but were printed in the k.c. star in the 30s. happily for me, there are several pieced patterns that have the flavor of the 30s, whether variations on tradition or originals.

the reason i am keeping this book in my too large quilting library is because, in addition to pieced patterns, there are twenty fabulous applique patterns from 1930 which are completely 30s in design.

there are some very nice aspects to the presentation of the patterns: a setting is shown both straight and on point (i first thought this was unnecessary, until i realized how convenient it is to see both side by side), there is a section showing various combinations of the pieced patterns, and there is a color picture of a newly sewn block and sometimes a complete quilt to illustrate the individual pattern.

unfortunately, the updated cutting instructions too often substitute half-square triangles for square-in-square patterns. i don't understand why contemporary quilters are considered less competent than those in the 30s.

there is a section of quilting patterns from the 30s included, and some are wonderful, but all are good. there is a two page section on making a quilt. good luck to absolute beginners!

each pattern is also paired with a short article or advertisement from the day it was originally published. these were very interesting, too.

so, taken all in all, there is a lot of value in this book. i gave it four stars only because of the inclusion of so many traditional patterns that can be found anywhere.
