    Book Description

The spectacular space epic continues, as the techno-mages face the growing threat of the Shadows . . .

As Elric and his student Galen watch with taut anticipation, dragons, angels, and shooting stars rain from the sky, heralding the arrival of the techno-mages on the planet Soom. It's the first time Elric-a member of the ruling Circle-has hosted such a gathering, and if all goes well, Galen and the other apprentices will emerge triumphant from the grueling initiation rites, ready to embrace their roles as full mages among the most powerful beings in the known universe.

But rumors fly of approaching danger and Galen and his young lover, Isabelle, are chosen to investigate the dark tidings. An ancient race has awakened after a thousand years, thirsty for war, slaughter, and annihilation. Will the techno-mages be the deciding factor in the war ahead? Or the first casualties?

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Well-written, usually interesting.......2006-05-19

This is a well-written novel spinoff from the Babylon 5 and Crusade television series.

Writing is enjoyable, the author appears to have the background data down correctly, and while only 1 character spent any time as a tv character (galen, probably less than 10 crusade episodes + call to arms?) 'early year' books always get some leeway on character development. Obviously Elric was a character in 'geometry of shadows' but 5 minutes of dialogue (if that) is just the bare-bones of a written character.

It was an enjoyable read, and didn't feel contrived or poorly constructed.

My main complaint is why anyone wants to read about the adventures of Anna as a shadown warship cpu. Those pages were skipped. Maybe there is a future plot reason to bring it out now.

The fact book 2 is apparently out of print and sold for multiples of original cover price (as well as the 3rd centauri prime book) is absurd. I am not sure I have ever heard of a published paperback only a few years old being hoarded or sold at absurd mark-ups to this degree....clearly the publisher is in need of a market economics course.

    3 out of 5 stars Tech Wizards.......2005-11-25

Cavelos has created the best B-5 trilogy yet. Her novels (Casting Shadows, Summoning Light, and Invoking Darkness) flesh out the background of the techno-mages and Galen's past. She meshes her material with the television series seamlessly and brings out nuances in character and situation. The relationship between the techno-mages and the Shadows is revealed in a striking manner that will satisfy any B-5 fan.

Though the most exciting B-5 trilogy I have yet read, Cavelos has a tendency to focus on emotional-turmoil and bringing the pacing of the plot to a complete and utter halt so a character can brood, mope, brood some more, mope again. Making matters worse, she repeats the same trite descriptions describing these feelings of melancholy and worthlessness over and over. But the rewards of completing this trilogy is worth the pitfalls in the prose. A must for any B-5 fan.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Background.......2005-10-28

I, as a big Bab 5 fan, really liked this. It fills in alot of background for the Tchno-mages and their actions parallel to the series, as well as some things about Galen, who featured so much in Crusade. To some extent, it would do well as a stand-alone, so I look forward to the next two books of the series.

    5 out of 5 stars A Promising Start.......2005-06-06

I'd certainly like to be an objective reviewer and say something about how non-B5-fans might feel about this book, but it's hardly possible. And, after all, it really is a Babylon 5 book, from the very first page on - the first chapter has both Shadows and Vorlons, and Morden plays a noticeable role in the book, which was enough to capture a fan's attention. So, 5 stars from a sworn B5-fan, and others, well, I guess you've just got to read and see. There is action and adventure, there is magic and romance, so it's pretty much got everything your regular science-fantasy would.

As the series title says, "Casting Shadows" is about the technomages, who didn't get a whole lot of attention in the series, and just a bit more in the spin-off, Crusade. The characters feel real, and through their way of showing off with illusions and such, even minor characters get clear personalities. The plot has its surprises and twists, as always, when the Shadows are involved... And there is romance as well, but the way it's written, it doesn't feel overly sugar-coated.

The only thing that momentarily annoyed me is the author's way of reusing the exactly same phrases several times. It might be a way of creating connections to the earlier moments, but somehow it feels a bit awkward, because surely there would've been some other way of saying those things instead of using the exact same words. Anyway, that's a small nitpicky thing. Overall, this was one of the best TV-show based books I've read, and I'm really looking forward to reading the next one.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Novelization.......2004-05-30

The 3 vol. series is an excellent tie-in to and novelization of the B5 t.v. series. Based on the Mysterious characters known as Techno-Mages who "use science to create Magic" We learn how the Mages work their Magic? With the aid of a programmable alien symbiotic implant at the base of thier skulls, of course. With it they can acomplish the same feats as the Wizards and Sorcerers in the Fantasy Novels. Endless streams of exploding fireballs, protective shields around their bodies, invisible highspeed platforms of levitation for movement, holographic dragons. Guided by the Circle and dedicated to the code. We also learn that Techno Mages go through various levels of training such as apprentis, chrystalis, initiate then Mage, apparently each candidate spends a couple of years at each stage. But now a new initiate (Galen the charactar from B5 & Crusade) Has discovered the long lost spell of distruction. Just as a large and unusual and sudden amount of activity is being detected on the rim. maybe the Shadows? I've heard from B5 websites that the Techno Mages where made up of numerous different species? but these Novels only describe human and centauri.

4 out of 5 stars unique book addresses night fears while casting shadows.......2004-01-11

This is a book that will make your little one positively anxious to go to bed! Spiral bound, you flip through the pages and use the attached flashlight to cast shadows on the wall as you read the accompanying stanza. The story tells of a ring held by the wicked crow, a jackal who plots and fights to claim the ring, and William -- who watches the battle and finally decides to act ....

The poem is not great but the story it tells, and the lesson of not fearing nighttime shadows, will please your little one. The concept is great and exciting for kids and adults, and the cut-outs are well done. I bought the book used and am glad I did so. While this is a fine book with heavy paper, cut-outs and spiral binding, and you can see why it's so expensive, it's still very expensive. This might be a good incentive to make your own shadow casting book or story.

5 out of 5 stars the power of imagination.......2001-03-31

My art teacher showed us this book in class. It was so wonderful to get a book that left something to the childs imagination. That is the problem I have with too much TV for children it does not allow them to create the minds eye. This book allows for that. Each page is well crafted and the addition of the flashlite keeps my child wanting to read tne book and use the light. He was fasinated when the images appeared on our wall. I think any child of age 4 years and up will appreciate this book and think that their parent is so cool. Which is what we really want isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome gift for all ages!.......2001-02-09

My aunt got this for me for Xmas because she knows I like children's books. The staff at the library I work at all read it together up in the storage room last week, and last weekend I read it to 2 girls, ages 8 and 9, who insisted on each taking turns reading it out loud. The cut-out pages and their shadows are extremely effective in displaying to kids that yes, shadows in the dark can be scary, but they needn't be. The first and last page are to be lit from behind with the included flashlight, which work as stepping stones into and back out of 'shadowland' with the hero, William. In between, the cut-out pages can be projected as large as your wall or ceiling allow them to be. Great for both boys and girls, and for a broad age group.

5 out of 5 stars The best children's book ever!.......2000-01-19

I bought this for my 4 year old son. And believe me, the cost almost made me say no. But it is so wonderful and my 7 year old son loves it too. It's short but well worth it. Something they will want to keep to read to their kids

5 out of 5 stars BRINGS CHILDREN AND PARENTS TOGETHER.......1999-12-10

The book is fun! But I thing what is even better is how it brings parents and children together. I am always trying to find new things to do with the kids in general, and this book solves the problem at bedtime. To the author, I say "Good work", and I hope you bring something else out soon.

William awakes the next morning, having learned an enduring lesson about the real meaning of Christmas.

2 out of 5 stars Only for children with a special grandfather who is close.......2005-12-27

The pictures in this shadow book are beautiful on their own, but the story that goes with it is essentially about a boy's relationship with his loving grandfather and is clearly only for lucky children who have that. I'd never confronted this situation before because I always knew what I was getting into with books for my children, but now I believe firmly that when a book for little ones is sold on-line, relationships in the story need to be either in the title or at least in the review. It was a painful disaster at our household, where one grandfather has died and the other has Alzheimers. I also blithely bought the book for a friend's son who is equally grandfather-less and it was painful for them also. This is surely a book that would be treasured by children who have grandfathers closeby who spend qulaity time with them. For those who don't, the enlarged impressions made by the shadows at night only bring sadness.

    5 out of 5 stars charming book.......2004-12-12

This is a unique and charming book for Christmas. Though the poem is of mediocre quality, it is good enough, and tells the story of William, watching out the window on Christmas Eve. Each page is a cutout, and the little flashlight that accompanies the book (held on with a velcro strip), lets you read the lines in the dark and illuminate the shadows from these 15 lovely stencils.

Young and old alike will delight in this unique holiday offering.

5 out of 5 stars Something totally different for bedtime!.......2003-12-31

The idea behind this book is wonderful. Each verse is accompanied by a detailed cut-out. When you shine the flashlight (included) onto the picture, an even more beautiful scene is rendered on your child's dark bedroom wall. We have read it every night since we bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted and written!.......2003-12-02

This book will be a Christmas tradition in our house for years to come. My two daughters, ages 4 and 5, were amazed and delighted by the story and images projected on the wall. We are having a lot of fun with this book- I projected "Grandpa" right onto their pillows, and pretended that he was going to sleep with them. This book is pricey because of the detailed, high quality laser cut pages. It is well worth the money!

    5 out of 5 stars A very special book!.......2001-11-28

I bought 2 copies of this book, one for my niece and the other for my nephew. When they arrived, I made sure to put batteries in each of the penlights. (You will need 2 AAA batteries.) Then I turned off all the lights and read the book myself. What a delight! The negative spaces of the cutout become snow covered mountains, filling the wall or ceiling of the room with a completely new world. The story is lovely, but the shadow images are stunning and mesmerizing. These will be hard books to wrap and give away. I will have to buy a copy for myself.

        Book Description

Special Operations Forces (SOF) have never been an integral element of Canada's military capability. Although units have existed periodically throughout the country's history, they have always been in the shadows. However, the terrorist attack in the United States on September 11, 2001, changed that. In the aftermath of 9/11, SOF became the force of choice. Casting Light on the Shadows consists of a series of essays on SOF-related issues written by individuals with specialized knowledge and expertise in the field. As well as providing a solid foundation for SOF theory, historical background, and evolution, the book also highlights ongoing developments in SOF.

In Casting Her Own Shadow, historian Allida Black chronicles Eleanor Roosevelt's considerable---if often unacknowledged---influence on liberal politics. Throughout her adult life, Roosevelt campaigned for civil rights and women's issues, conducting a vigorous campaign of editorials in publications like Redbook and The New York Times to advance the causes she espoused. She enjoyed a huge following, Black notes, not least because her writing was commonsensical and good-humored, even when Roosevelt was clearly irritated. "I am beginning to think," she once observed, for instance, "that if you have been a liberal, and if you believe that those who are strong must sometimes consider the weak, and that with strength and power goes responsibility, automatically some people will consider you a Communist." Better known than her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when he entered national politics, Eleanor managed to keep her own identity even as his advisors urged her to keep a lower profile and stay out of the news. What bearing does all this have on the present? Well, this is a matter being played out even now in Washington, for no one quite resembles Roosevelt so much as Hillary Clinton, whose work as a politician and newspaper columnist echoes Roosevelt's---and who has been similarly reviled for expressing independent ideas.

        Book Description

Black shows how Eleanor Roosevelt, after being freed from the constraints imposed by her role in the White House, eagerly expanded her career and unabashedly challenged both the Democratic party and American liberals to practice what they preach.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Out of the Shadow--Into the Sun.......2000-05-08

Negotiating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through the United Nations was not the only post-FDR contribution of Eleanor Roosevelt. This extraordinary woman was a powerful force within the Democratic Party and America until the day she died and left a legacy in her own right on issues of civil rights and civil liberties that finds voice even today.

Black's book focuses on Roosevelt's post-White House years and brings ER's domestic front activities and contributions to light--showing the long-term and deep nature of Eleanor Roosevelt's convictions. The book traces ER's growth in understanding of issues and underscores the courage it took to live her life in the forefront of debate and controversy.

This book should be read by anyone interested in Eleanor Roosevelt for the insight it brings and the truly interesting stories it tells. I particularly found the chapter on ER's relationship with John F. Kennedy fascinating and learned that ER withheld her support for his candidacy until he promised her action on civil rights. Ever the consumate tactition, she even rearranged the chairs at the famous meeting between them at Val Kil so she would be sitting higher than him.

"Casting" is pain-stakingly researched and well documented. Allida Black's interpretation of ER is founded on years of work with Roosevelt's papers and other sources.
