The best there is!.......1998-11-05
As all books by Yariv exremely readable. Excellent overview and excellent explanations. The layout is not fancy but the text is gold. No "handwaving", the authors are really interested in teaching the subject.

Laser Beam Scintillation "Without" Applications.......2002-02-21
Very disapointed in the book's content. While the authors are extremely knowledgable of the subject matter, they cannot seem to convey the information to the layperson. The book is mostly theoretical and very math intensive. I would have preferred more text and less equation derivation. The first ten pages were good, but beyond that I was lost. Haven't had that kind of math in 20 years. From viewing the Table of Contents on SPIE's website, the chapters appeared to be just what I was looking for. However, there were no practical applications with real world numerical values, only theory. Not for the practical engineer unless you have an extensive math background.

Book Description
Five years to the day, almost to the second, after he disappeared from the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute, leaving his host body in a catatonic state, the being known as prot (rhymes with goat) has returned. Now, in sixteen more sessions with psychiatrist Gene Brewer, prot reveals that he has come back to escort a chosen few to his home planet, K-PAX.K-PAX is an idyllic planet free of the pain and suffering of Earth. Prot has incredible insights into how to cure that suffering, and his radical ideas have made him a celebrity. Now, legions of people are longing to follow him home.But Dr. Brewer has heard it before. Five years ago, he discovered another person buried deep in prot's personality: Robert Porter of Montana. The mystery of Robert's illness and of prot's true origins lie deep within Robert's shattered psyche. Now Dr. Brewer must race against the clock to unlock the secrets of Robert's traumatic past and not only save his patient's fate-but also that of humanity....AUTHORBIO: GENE BREWER was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana, and educated at DePauw University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Before becoming a novelist, he studied DNA replication and cell division at several major research institutions. Dr. Brewer lives in New York City with his wife and Dalmatian.

Worst book I've ever read.......2007-06-18
As I said in my review of K-Pax, this author can't write. I read these books after seeing the movie and being unhappy with the inconclusive ending. My husband and I both wanted to be able to determine whether "prot" was or was not an alien, otherwise I'd have never suffered through two badly written books, the second one worse than the first. This author appears to have given only cursory attention to researching the subject of mental illness. He creates utterly contrived characters and situations (Like Lou, the pregnant man.) The way the mental hospital is run is patently absurd (putting a journalist in charge of a patient?) He writes without a sense of direction, writing as it pops into his head. His explanation for Robert's mental illness is completely un-original, and seems like a bail-out because he's not talented enough to write anything better. The character, "prot" is an obnoxious antagonist poster-child for anarchists, hippies, PETA, tree-huggers, agnostics, and any far left organization you can think of. His preachy harping, and criticism make him completely un-lovable in the sequel. Is the author trying to make a moral point? Throughout the book the reader cannot come to any decision about prot's origin because the author continually throws in new scenarios to create a dichotomy: is he a mentally disturbed man, or is he an alien? Even the author can't make up his mind. He dragged out the book by never leaning in any particular direction. Brewer created two completely different characters in Robert and Prot, but gave no conclusive or believable way to reconcile their co-existing in the one person. The problem is, the book needed a decisive, well authored moment and it never came. It was a waste of time.
NO where near as good as the first novel..........2005-08-24
prot's back, hooray, unfortunately he's now snotty, condescending, smug, insulting and rude. Oddly enough another character in the book exclaims that "he's exactly the same as he was" while anyone who's read both books will see that sentiment is patently false. While I enjoyed the first book and did finish reading this novel I must say Gene Brewer was off his feed, game, rocker when he wrote this. A patient claims HE'S pregnant, begins to put on huge amounts of weight and is NOT physically examined? A doctor allows a patient who's just barely recovering from sexual dysfunction due to childhood molestation to have sex in his examining room with a person in love with one of the patients alter egos? A discrepancy that truly annoyed me was: At one point one of Robert Porter's personalities confesses to killing the uncle who molested him after he's raped and killed Porter's wife and child later in the book we're told that the uncle and aunt died in a fire long before the killing supposedly happened. This isn't explained or explored or even touched on and it makes no sense. Did Gene Brewer just forget what he told us a few pages before hand? If he did, shame on him. If he didn't why didn't the doctor in the book even explore this avenue before releasing the patient! All in all, if you're read the first book you might as well read this one, but don't be surprised if you're not happy about it. I know I'm not...
In A Paperback Book.......2004-09-12
You saw or read K-PAX? I enjoyed the way the film left the decision as to whom main character prot really was to the viewer, so I was hesitant to purchase this second book in the trilogy. On A Beam Of Light proved a delight to tear through not only because you get to learn more about and hear more from our newest favorite alien character, but because of the ease with which the story was written, with a quick-paced style that leaves nothing out. It's great to peruse something "clinical" or technical without the author bogging the story down with pages of explanations of terms and procedures as though he or she thinks his reader is some kind of idiot. Brewer's psyche ward seems more pleasant a place to hang out and meet people than anyplace public these days, or as hero prot points out...perhaps the people within the building should be set free and everyone not undergoing constant psychiatric evaluation should be housed within.
It's been a delight to hang with prot again, and I look forward to the third installment. I gave this book only four out of five stars, because I fully expect the next book the author pens to somehow be even better.
A great, fast read. Does well even if you never read the first book (though it makes you want to go back and get it). Highly addictive stuff.
He's from the planet K-PAX. Everyone wants to go there..........2004-05-22
+++++
This sequel (first published in 2001) to the previous popular novel K-PAX (1995), both authored by Gene Brewer, consists again of sixteen chapters (or "sessions") and has as well a prologue and epilogue. (There is no short glossary as in the previous novel.)
The prot-agonist of this story who calls himself "Prot" (pronounced pr-OAT) "returns" (after a five year absence) from the utopian planet K-PAX (that, according to the previous novel, is in the constellation Lyra) to enter the mind of the catatonic earthling-patient called "Robert Porter" (whose identity was discovered at the end of the previous novel). The setting of this sequel is in the same institution as in the previous novel.
Prot is treated by the same psychiatrist of the previous novel, Dr. Gene Brewer. (Note that the doctor has the same name as the author.) The entire book again is mainly about the interaction and relationship that develops between Prot and Dr. Brewer. However, now there is much more interaction between Dr. Brewer and Robert Porter (who is called "Rob").
The previous novel had Prot with much wit, wisdom, and humor. Prot does not seem to have as much of this in this sequel because more focus is on Rob. However, Prot's wit and wisdom shine through and he gives interesting social commentary when he appears on a television talk show. Here are three examples of what Prot says when he was on that show:
(1) "Why not try living without wars, religion...and the rest for a decade or two? If you don't like it you can always go back to hatred and killing."
(2) "What kind of world [on Earth] is it where violence and war are not only accepted, but your youth are encouraged to practice them? Where your leaders must be constantly guarded against assassination, and airline travellers frisked for weapons? Where every vial of aspirin must be protected against poisoning? Where some of your beings make fortunes [playing] games while others are starving? Where no one believes a single word your governments or your corporations say?"
(3) "Hunting is no sport, it is cold-blooded murder. If you can outwrestle a bear or chase down a rabbit, then you can consider yourself a true sportsman."
Prot still demonstrates certain outworldly abilities and even some of his medical tests are strange. Thus, both Dr. Brewer and the reader are not sure weather Prot is indeed an extraterrestrial or a traumatized human being suffering from "multiple personality disorder."
In this sequel, there is more interest in Rob and the other institutionalized patients. (The reader is introduced to many new and interesting patients.) Prot still has a positive influence on the other patients thus again giving this sequel a certain warmth. (He even has a positive influence on animals.) Through the character of Dr. Brewer, the author reveals and explains certain psychological concepts.
Suspense is created when Prot reveals that he is going back to K-PAX for good but this time he does not tell Dr. Brewer the date and time of his "departure." As well, Prot says that this time he will not bring just one (as in the previous novel) but one hundred of his fellow patients with him back to his utopian world.
By the end, most questions posed in this sequel are answered. However, some are not. In other words, this sequel as in the previous novel ends on an ambiguous note. (Some readers may not find the ending ambiguous.) In fact, the last sentence of this sequel is said by Dr. Brewer and reads as follows: "I still go out at night and look up at the sky, toward the constellation Lyra. And I still wonder..."
Can this sequel be read without reading the previous novel? Yes it is possible. But I would not recommend it. Even though the author Brewer rehashes some of the story from the previous novel in the sequel's prologue and first few chapters, I found that he missed some crucial and interesting information that was needed to fully understand all the finer nuances in this sequel.
This sequel is the second novel in a trilogy. The first novel, as mentioned, was entitled "K-PAX" while the third novel is entitled "K-PAX III: The Worlds of Prot."
In conclusion, this is a good sequel that will hold your attention to the end. As in the first novel, Prot's story will teach the reader about himself/herself!!
+++++
The Return of Prot!.......2003-07-05
I was a bit skeptical when I started to read this book. I thought it might be just a sloppy sequal. Fortunately, I was proved wrong. In fact, it fits right in with the first book, K-PAX.
The story takes place 5 years after the original book, when Prot returns home. All the main characters are back, along with some interesting new ones at the hospital.
Like the last book, this novel leaves you wondering whether or not Prot really was who he said he was, or just a dillusionary effect of multiple personality disorder. In my opinion, the first book is more convincing that Prot is human, but in this one he seems more alien.
Either way, this is a great book that continues the exciting story of Prot from K-PAX.

Book Description
In 1954, Charles Townes invented the laser's microwave cousin, the maser. The next logical step was to extend the same physical principles to the shorter wavelengths of light, but the idea did not catch fire until October 1957, when Townes asked Gordon Gould about Gould's research on using light to excite thallium atoms. Each took the idea and ran with it. The independent-minded Gould sought the fortune of an independent inventor; the professorial Townes sought the fame of scientific recognition. Townes enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Arthur Schawlow, and got Bell Labs into the race. Gould turned his ideas into a patent application and a million-dollar defense contract. They soon had company. Ali Javan, one of Townes's former students, began pulling 90-hour weeks at Bell Labs with colleague Bill Bennett. And far away in California a bright young physicist named Ted Maiman became a very dark horse in the race. While Schawlow proclaimed that ruby could never make a laser, Maiman slowly convinced himself it would. As others struggled with recalcitrant equipment and military secrecy, Maiman built a tiny and elegant device that fit in the palm of his hand. His ruby laser worked the first time he tried it, on May 16, 1960, but afterwards he had to battle for acceptance as the man who made the first laser. Beam is a fascinating tale of a remarkable and powerful invention that has become a symbol of modern technology.

Fun to Read.......2006-09-28
I thought that Jeff Hecht's "City of Light" was a better book but the race became better and better when you get further into it. The writing was casual, informative and descriptive and the technical information slowly evolved (not overbearing) as progress was made by the various principals. Yes, it was a science telenovela. However, I think he should have written a Chapter 20 to give a Wikipedia-like roundup or summation of laser theory and applications. I think the author was persuasive on his remarks on Maiman missing out of the Nobel.

Modern Map Methods in Particle Beam Physics.......2002-10-03
This book is a fine study of the dynamics of beam particles in particle accelerators. It deals with the description of the motion of particles in accelerators to very high precision over short times and the analysis of the topology of the evolution of state space over long times. The book has seven chapters.
Chapter 1 deals with the dynamics of particles and fields. There are 5 subsections : Beams and Beam Physics ; Differential Equations, Determinism and Maps ; Lagrangian Systems ; Hamiltonian Systems ; Fields and Potentials. An interesting idea here is the use of the Hamiltonian to represent energy particle in which the particle can be 'squeezed' and when let go, it returns to its original shape. This property is called symplecity and is akin to the motion of an incompressible liquid within a structure of guidance surfaces : The surfaces can never be crossed, and the closer they lie together, the faster the liquid flows.
Chapter 2 deals with the differential algebraic techniques which are used to study weakly nonlinear motion of particles in accelerators linked to the common concept of the transfer map of the dynamics of those particles. There are 5 subsections here :
Differential Algebraic Techniques ; Function Spaces and Their Algebras ; Taylor Differential Algebras ; Advanced Methods ;
Appendix on Third ODE Integrator.
Chapter 3 deals with Fields. All the fields here are governed by Maxwell's equation. There are 2 subsections here : Analytic Field Representation ; Practical Utilization of Field Information.
Chapter 4 deals with the properties of maps. Maps are used to describe the flows for the ordinary differential equations occurring in beam physics. There are 4 subsections :
Maps : Properties ; Manipulations ; Symmetries ; Representations.
Chapter 5 deals with the calculation of maps. There are 5 subsections : Maps : Calculation ; The Particle Optical Equations of Motion ; Equations of Motion for Spin ; Maps Determined by Algebraic Relations ; Maps Determined by Differential Equations.
Chapter 6 deals with imaging systems. As described in the book, imaging systems are devices used for the purpose of measuring position, momentum, energy or mass of charged particles, in which microscopes and spectrometers are included. There are 4 subsections : Introduction ; Aberration and Their Correction ;
Reconstructive Correction of Aberrations ; Aberration Correction via Repetitive Symmetry.
Chapter 7 deals with repetitive systems. As described in the book, all repetitive systems require that the particles remain confined in the ring, which means that the motion is stable in that their coordinates do not exceed a certain bound d. The study of the dynamics of repetitive systems has long been a key concern of beam physics. There are 5 subsections : Repetitive
Systems ; Linear Theory ; Parameter-Dependent Linear Theory ;
Normal Forms ; Symplectic Tracking.
The book is a liking for those who love mathematics. Going through the book, one can find and is amazed how mathematics can provide the modern technology for the construction of very effective and very accurate accelerator machines to meet the objectives of various scientific fields.

Book Description
This book presents beam physics using a unified approach, emphasizing basic concepts and analysis methods. While many existing resources in beams and accelerators are specialized to aid the professional practitioner, this text anticipates the needs of physics students. The central concepts underpinning the physics of accelerators, charged particle, and photon beams are built up from familiar, intertwining components, such as electromagnetism, relativity, and Hamiltonian dynamics. These components are woven into an illustrative set of examples that allow investigation of a variety of physical scenarios. With these tools, single particle dynamics in linear accelerators are discussed, with general methods that are naturally extended to circular accelerators. Beyond single particle dynamics, the proliferation of commonly used beam descriptions are surveyed and compared. These methods provide a powerful connection between the classical charged particle beams, and beams based on coherent waves - laser beams. Aspects of experimental techniques are introduced. Numerous exercises, and examples drawn from devices such as synchrotrons and free-electron lasers, are included to illustrate relevant physical principles.
