Book Description

Tony Dungy's words and example have intrigued millions of people, particularly following his victory in Super Bowl XLI, the first for an African American coach. How is it possible for a coach--especially a football coach--to win the respect of his players and lead them to the Super Bowl without the screaming histrionics, the profanities, the demand that the sport come before anything else? How is it possible for anyone to be successful without compromising faith and family? In this inspiring and reflective memoir, Coach Dungy tells the story of a life lived for God and family--and challenges us all to redefine our ideas of what it means to succeed. Includes a foreword by Denzel Washington and a 16-page color photo insert.

5 out of 5 stars A Life changing book!.......2007-10-10

A great read! Very inspirational! A must read for all football fans. Tony Dungy is living proof that good guys can finish first. It just goes to show you that it pays to do things the right way and to treat people with respect.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Strength.......2007-10-10

This was an excellent book. It showed how ones spiritual beliefs can guide you through our daily lives both in good and and bad.

It gave great insight to how and why the Indianapolis Colts football team is managed and what their priorities are in regard to player selection and weekly stradagy.

And finally, Tony presents his philosophy on how trying to do the "right thing" in all situations leaves you with few regrets.

This book captures so many different aspects of life from being an authentic Christian, football, African American history, to parenting. I really enjoyed the honesty as well as the humility of Tony Dungy. This book is a great gift for anybody.

I've never been more excited about a book! I knew this was going to be good just from the little I read on the cover. You can relate the story of Tony Dungy to any aspect. It has nothing to do with sports, but everything to do with life!

4 out of 5 stars Explains Magic strategies simply.......1999-06-16

Only being a novice with only a few cards, I wanted to know how to best utilize my time and money to get better at Magic. This book takes you through all the steps necessary to bring your skills up to par. I enjoyed the section about deck building since I had no experience (and no cards). Probably the best part of the book is everything is explained visually. You can see and read each of the cards and how they interact. The only concern I had with the book is that it is set up for Release 5, not the current release. But that's not that big of a deal. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand this game.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......1999-06-12

i liked it a lot. good rules explanations

5 out of 5 stars Great book to read, it helped me alot since I'm a beginner........1999-01-23

This book breaks it down into its simplest terms. I was able to understand and follow the directions easy. A definite need for those of us that are new to playing Magic the Gathering.

5 out of 5 stars This is absolutely the best book for a beginner to buy........1998-09-02

I can't think of any book that will teach you the finer details of the game better than this. As a beginner, photos of actual cards help immensely in learning the game. Only "Official" books show the actual cards. This book is great for a beginner who wants to advance to intermediate and tournament level play. The book is dedicated to teaching you all about the strategy of playing with the 5th edition cards. There is a fantastic attack sequence description in this book. The book also details banding, instants, and interrupts which can be very confusing to beginners. Good information is also included for creating and playing with the 5 basic decks: an inexpensive Weenie Deck; a Big Creature Deck; a Burn Deck; a Permission Deck; and a Land Destruction/Discard Deck.

5 out of 5 stars bethmo is simply the best writer around on M:tG.......1998-07-07

Beth Moursund, bethmo, is simply the best writer there is on Magic: the Gathering. She has a simple style, but makes very deep points. Time and again I have read her discussion of a card or a strategy and been amazed at her insight.

This is a book for the beginning to intermediate player. Actually, it's a book for all but the expert. (And even an expert would appreciate her writing.) In this book, bethmo discusses both how to play the game and how to build winning decks. She illustrates her approach with plays and with decks, so that her theory and practice can be seen side-by-side. Most wonderful of all, the book has illustrations of all the cards she discusses, so you don't have to wonder what the heck some card says. It's right there for you to see. Also, don't worry that the decks will involve out-of-print cards that will cost you a small fortune to procure. bethmo deliberately uses only in-print cards from relatively recent (and still very available editions of the game). She's so good that she doesn't need to take refuge in a deck full of $20 to $200 cards.

By all means, by this book. Once you read it you'll be a bethmo addict, too. Then you can go out and buy other of her books, like her guide to Tempest, the single-card strategies (outdated unless you have the computer game or $1000s to spend), or one of the encyclopedia volumes.

Any collaborative effort by the esteemed Charlotte Zolotow and the illustrious Maurice Sendak is bound to be a success. These beloved creators of countless children's favorites outdo themselves with this 1963 Caldecott Honor-winning classic about a little girl in need of assistance. Finding a birthday present for her mother is no easy task for our heroine. Luckily, she happens upon the avuncular Mr. Rabbit, whose heart is in the right place, even if he doesn't always have the best ideas. Ultimately, his suggestions do come in handy, and between the two of them they determine the ideal birthday tribute: the gift of color. Children will join the protagonists in contemplating how to make the abstract tangible, and all readers will be delighted to see yellow translate to bananas, as green is given in pears, and blue takes the shape of grapes.

The soft, muted colors of Sendak's illustrations are reminiscent of a Monet landscape--utterly appealing and dreamy. And the reflective, sing-song dialogue between Mr. Rabbit and the girl is as deliciously lulling as a shady swing in a hammock. This quiet, peaceful book is a treasure for any shelf. (Ages 4 to 8)

    Book Description

The author of such classics as My Granson Lew, Williams's Doll, and Over and Over needs no introduction. Neither does her collaborator Maurice Sendak, who has illustrated so many of today's best-loved, as well as most distinguised, books for children. The heroine of their book has a problem. And at first it does not look as though Mr. Rabbit is going to be much help in solving it . For everyone knows you cannot give your mother a red roof, a yellow taxi-cab, a green caterpillar, or a blue lake for her birthday. But then all the little girl had said was that her mother liked red, yellow, green and blue -- and so Mr. Rabbit was trying. How he and the liitle girl come up with the absolutely perfect present makes a story the the youngest reader will love. And the wonderously bright full-color pictures will bring hours of pleasure to readers and lookers of all ages.

Winning Colors is the weakest link in the series. It gets bogged down in politics. But don't let that turn you off. The cover art for this book is silly. If you read Against the Odds and Sporting Chance, hang in there. You will still get a dose of space battles and horses. Check this one out from the library.

Here's the book order if you are intersted: Hunting Party, Sporting Chance, Winning Colors, Once a Hero, Rules of Engagement, Change of Command, and Against the Odds.

4 out of 5 stars Back in the Saddle.......2006-01-14

It looks like Heris Serrano will finally be vindicated. After being unjustly cashiered from the fleet, she has served as the yacht captain for a rich lady. Even that has had its share of adventure but she has always pined for the fleet. Now she has a chance to return but that chance is a dangerous one.

Her mistress is visiting a planet intent upon buying some horseflesh. While there, Serrano learns of the locals' fears of imminent invasion. She manages to offer some good advice and help them drive off a probe but things fall apart when elements from her own fleet show up and appear to be turncoats. She might be able to save the system from destruction from the real invasion fleet only if she foments a mutiny and takes command of the fleet herself. Needless to say, the turncoats have other ideas.

This seems as if it will wind up the Serrano trilogy. That's a shame. It has been a good series thus far.

4 out of 5 stars All things considered, an excellent read.......2005-01-21

Heris Serrano, formerly a captain in the Regular Space Service, has spent the last several years commanding a rich old lady's private transportation instead. Now, in the concluding volume of the trilogy begun by Hunting Party and continued with Sporting Chance, she's offered what may be a chance to go back to the life she loves best. The charming rural planet where Lady Cecelia wants to do some horse-trading lies undefended, and the so-called Benignity of the Compassionate Hand (an outlaw state) has it slated for scorching and annexation. All that stands between the enemy forces and Xavier's frightened population is Heris and her crew. Aboard what? An armed yacht. Aided by a few shuttles, a snail-like ore carrier, and one museum-vintage starship.

This wonderful adventure story gets needlessly complicated in places because of all the subplots we're following as the author moves toward tying up the trilogy's many loose ends. You do need to know the characters already in order to grasp what's going on; I wouldn't recommend trying to read this book first, and reading it as a standalone would be frustrating at best. But it does a fine job of pointing up its theme of maturity, as the younger characters achieve this quality that was lacking when we first met them; and as the older characters start to realize how their potentially endless lives (thanks to "rejuv") will alter their children's and grandchildren's futures. Or perhaps I should say nieces and nephews, not children and grandchildren; because aside from Heris herself, this book's most notable characters are its formidable maiden aunts.

All things considered, an excellent read.

1 out of 5 stars Certainly Not a Starting Point.......2003-11-17

This was my first and last Elizabeth Moon novel. Something about the cover art appealed to me, but a pretty painting covers an awful book.

Winning Colors suffers from a rambling plot, an unlikely political setting and absolutely dismal characterization.

Adventures remembered by characters are not flashbacks to illustrate a point, but filler snippets from previous books in a series. This device (dating back to the pulp age of science fiction when authors were paid by the word) has no place in 21st century sci-fi.

Much of the disjointed nature of the book comes from the fact that a word-count was being sought. Once Moon reached that count, the book wraps in less than 10 pages. The plot of this book is boring, hackneyed and predictable. Adding insult to injury, the plot that is rehashed here from a previous book in the series seems far-fetched; in addition to being boring, hackneyed and predictable.

There is a principle in series fiction that each installment should, in some way, stand alone. That is definitely not the case here. If you try (as I did) to enter Moon's universe with this book, you will likely be disappointed.

If you have a favorite character from an earlier book, you might find something worthwhile here. In the span of this novel, none of the characters appeared interesting enough for me to care much what happened to them. The excessive number of characters for such a thin plot is not new to series fiction, but in this case they were so unlikable that their continuing presence became an additional irritant.

Try out this book from your local library before you waste $7 on a poor effort.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad...........2003-07-16

I'll have to admit that I struggled to finish this book. The second half of the book couldn't really keep my attention. I finished the first half pretty quick, then nursed the rest of it along bit by bit.

I would say that while I liked the ending, for the most part, the storyline wasn't tightly spun enough to really give this book the unputdownable quality it needed.

Lots of different sub plots that will eventually link up. A wealthy Morreline is killed by miners in Patchcock, The Famillias is struggling to regroup with Bunny at the helm after the abdication of the King. Cecelia's finally in the pink of health and out to sue Ronnie's family. Ronnie and Raffa have a relationship going against the wishes of their parents. And so on.

This book draws a little more on Heris' military roots as she finds herself in command of a miniscule task force. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes of Heris in command of her ships. She reminded me a litle bit of David Weber's Honor Harrington in her demeanour and the way she handled the battle.

And we finally meet Junior Grade Lieutenant Esmay Suiza, the character Moon will use to head the series from the next book on out.

Overall, not too bad. But I think the first couple of books in the series were much better than this one. Still, if you're a fan of the Serrano series, it won't hurt to struggle through Winning Colors just so you can get to the next book!

    Book Description

Oliver Lewis was champion jockey of the Kentucky Derby in 1875 with a winning race time of two minutes and 37 seconds. Jockey Willie Simms won in 1896, bringing his horse in at two minutes and seven seconds. James Winkfield was the winning jockey in both 1901 and 1902 with winning race times of two minutes and seven seconds and two minutes and eight seconds, respectively. Each of these men possessed the skill and power necessary to spur a horse to glorious victory. All are members of the small, select group of Derby-winning jockeys who were African Americans. The stakes were high: Black jockeys who won a race in the late 1700s and 1800s sometimes won freedom from slavery as well.

This work examines the presence of black jockeys in the Kentucky Derby, from the first instance of slaves working as stable hands and tending their masters' horses to the first black jockey to win the prestigious Kentucky Derby in 1875 and the continued participation of black jockeys in the Kentucky Derby. Black owners and trainers in the Kentucky Derby are also discussed. Three appendices list black winning jockeys, black trainers and black owners of Kentucky Derby horses.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Rich History Of Triumph And Tragedy.......2007-03-06

Between the years 1875-1902, a dozen black jockeys were aboard winning mounts 16 times in the Kentucky Derby. There hasn't been a black jockey in the winner's circle since Jimmy Winkfield 105 years ago.

In an information-packed 110 pages, authors James Robert Saunders and Monica Renae Saunders takes the reader back to a forgotten period in American history that was yet another victim to the hate of institutionalized racism.

Biographies of the 12 jockeys are richly supplemented with an overview of society and the sport, along with background material that dates back to slavery, when most jobs in the plantation stables were done by slaves & jockeys as young as 10 or 11 piloted the Thoroughbreds in races throughout the nation.

How bizarre it is that opportunities in the sport that began with slavery were then destroyed by slavery in the guise of Jim Crow. The reverberations are still felt today, as opportunities at the top levels of the sport have remained difficult - if not impossible - for blacks to achieve.

The appendix includes lists of champion jockeys, trainers who had runners in the race and owners who had starters in the field. The Thoroughbred owners include Berry Gordy and Stanley Burrell, better-known as MC Hammer, whose racer was aptly named, Dance Floor.

This is a story of triumph in the face of great odds and the tragedy of a nation that seeminngly can't ride fast enough away from the real history of racism in society & sports.

2 out of 5 stars Nice to read at the beginning, but more and more egoistic as it goes along.......2006-05-20

    18 Jun 2005

As the book progressed, it got more and more egoistic, to the point where it becomes a turn-off towards the end of the book. I am surprised that there was so little mentioned of Hakeem. Shaq's attitude seems to be that since he can score, he does not respect centers who can't score. Whereas he respect Bill Russell. But he does give Kobe his fair share of spotlight. The other book I read was an unabashed hype of Shaq, so this is a big improvement.

    4 out of 5 stars SHAQ SPEAKS.......2005-08-08

THIS IS A BOOK BY SHAQUILLE O'NEAL CENTER FOR THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. HE TELLS US SOME OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER IN THE NBA. MOST OF THE BOOK CONCERNS WINNING HIS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NBA. HE TOUCHES ON HIS TEAMATES, COACHES AND LIFE IN GENERAL IN THE NBA. I LIKED THIS BOOK AND I LIKE SHAQ, EVEN THOUGH HE IS A BIT FULL OF HIMSELF. HE ENJOYS LIFE AND IS VERY HUMAN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO LAKER AND BASKETBALL FANS.

5 out of 5 stars In his own words--pretty authentic stuff.......2005-02-06

From all of his interviews and press conferences, I know that he wrote this book and there were very few, if any, editors to "re-write" his book like most athlete autobiographies. This one might not have every sentence punctuated correctly, but he does a great job as a whole. Where else can you get something like this--a diary, essentially--from the store.

3 out of 5 stars The Shaq attack now in Miami...he's changed........2004-07-21

I do agree that some sections he repeats himself, and caught myself wondering if I had read that section already. I do like his conversational approach though as it seems like he's just talking right to you. Nowhere does it mention in the 'laws of book etiquette' that you have to be a prolific writer to release a book.

I've read the whole book and thoroughly enjoyed it and how it gave the readers an insight on how Shaq views the NBA, how the underachieving pre-Jackson Lakers REALLY were, and most rewarding, his upbringing and how his parents raised him.

Don't expect the same Shaq in this book than what he portrays now. As he's contradicted himself a bit in light of recent events regarding his trade to Miami. Nevertheless, I do recommend this book as a casual and humorous read.
    - Laker fan for life, thanks Shaq for your dominance

    2 out of 5 stars what a big joke!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-11

5 out of 5 stars A POIGNANT STORY THAT WILL PULL AT YOUR HEART STRINGS.......2006-08-26

This book is a great read for survivors of childhood abuse and should be on the shelf of all mental health care workers who provide services to adolescents and adults. The story grabs you from the beginning with an element of fantasy and the inherent innocence of all children. As the story progressed and reality took over I found myself going through so many emotions I couldn't put the book down until I reached the end. It was only after I finished reading it and had time to ponder it did I grasp the many messages the author is trying to share with the readers. The simplicity of the format, the characters and the sometimes hidden meanings all make for a deeply profound story. I give it 4 stars only because I was so moved by the story and the author's message of hope, I would have liked it to be longer than the 65 pages.

      Book Description

In 1959, Lorraine Hansberry became the first black woman playwright to be produced on Broadway. Her play, A Raisin in the Sun -- based loosely on the experiences of her own family in Chicago -- was an overnight sensation with both black and white audiences. In the wake of its phenomenal success, Hansberry became a spokesperson for black Americans during the 1960s civil rights movement. Then in 1964, just before the Broadway opening of her second play, The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, Hansberry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Her brilliant career as a writer was cut short a year later, when she died at age 34.
