5 out of 5 stars It's Isaac Asimov- Of Course it's Great!.......2007-01-06

I read this collection a couple of years ago, and I fell in love immediately. This collection of short stories is probably one of the best collections you can come across of Asimov's short stories. His views about humanity and the rise of technonogy is fused with his original and creative plots and his incredible writing skill. These stories, including "The Ugly Little Boy," and, of course, the much celebrated "The Last Question" really get you thinking. However, this book is really worth it for the title story, "Robot Dreams," which cannot be found in any other collection of his (and it's a really good story too!). I am not a sci-fi fan, but when it comes to authors such as Asimov, I can make the exception. Get this. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Asimov Delivers.......2006-12-26

I've always been an Isaac Asimov fan from the first read of "The Last Question" and "The Ugly Boy" (which are both included in this collection) published in the Asimov collection, "Nine Tomorrows".

His short stories in this volume are just as compelling and make for good nightstand reading. I've read and re-read this book several times over the years, and each time I re-read it, it is as fresh as the first time. Of course, my favorites are the robotic stories with Susan Calvin. Unfortunately, only two are published in this collection. Nevertheless, Mr. Asimov was a master story-teller, and knew his subject matter very well...he is sorely missed.

Three stories in particular stand out: "The Ugly Boy", which poses (and answers) the question of how modern man would react to a neanderthal being plucked out of time, as it were, and thrust into our world; "The Billiard Ball", which explores man's ubiquitous search for the perpetual-motion machine - but more than that, it examines two diametrically opposed personalities and philosophies clashing on the field of academia; and finally, "Lest We Remember", a story that involves the synthetic development of "total recall", and all the socio-political ramifications that capability produces in a fiercely competitive business setting. All in all, five stars...

5 out of 5 stars Mostly NON-robot short stories.......2004-07-18

I expected this to be a collection of robot stories because of the title, but only two are robot stories. They are the first two, and the first one is also a story from _I, Robot_ (which I just re-read). The second one is "Robot Dreams" from which the book takes its title, and it is another Susan Calvin robot story like those from _I, Robot_ but was written in the mid-'80s (_I, Robot_ was written 30 years earlier). It is in the same mold with the earlier stories, but with a nod to advancing technology (small computers, for instance).

Many other stories in this collection center on "Multivac," an immense computer. The name is an obvious derivative of UNIVAC, a large, vacuum-tube based computer of the early 1950s. UNIVAC became famous for predicting that Eisenhower would win the 1952 election based on early returns (against pundit predictions that Stevenson would win). That led directly to one story, "Franchise," which takes the ability to sample a small number of votes to predict a total election outcome and drives the idea to an absurd (but nevertheless interesting) extreme.

There are a variety of other stories, from ones dealing with beings without bodies to one talking about an alien medical investigator who has come to Earth to find out more about a disease. All are worth the read, and some are truly fascinating and end in very unexpected ways.

Ralph McQuarrie provides the cover illustration and several others for individual stories; they are of the style familiar to anyone who has seen original art from "Star Wars" (which he worked on). Asimov's introduction is amusing; he explains what he got right in predicting the future--and what he got spectacularly wrong. He discusses this with respect to both stories in the book (Multivac, for instance) and to other books and stories he had written decades earlier.

All in all, this book was a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Good story sampler, great art........2004-07-01

Someone wrote that he only knew of one story being in another collection, and another wrote that it's only complete if you have Robot Visions as well. Here's the scoop.

Robot Visions has 7 of the 9 stories from I, Robot, 2 stories from Bicentennial Man and one unique to Robot Visions, the title story. The I, Robot and Bicentennial Man stories are all also included in The Complete Robot.

Robot Dreams, as others have pointed out, is actually a well-rounded compendium and has only a few robot stories. The title story is unique to this collection, but the three others are included in The Complete Robot (one of those is an I, Robot story).

So, the first story is from I, Robot, and the second is the newly-penned title story. The next 5 stories are from Nightfall, then comes the title story from Martian Way. Then come two from Earth is Room Enough and one from Nine Tomorrows. The next two stories are from Buy Jupiter, and then three stories from Nine Tomorrows. There follows the final story from Asimov's Mysteries, then a story that's been in four other collections, including TCR. Finally, the last two stories are from The Winds of Change.

5 out of 5 stars One of two fine collections.......2003-12-16

This books is a great example of the stories Asimov has locked away in his mind. Some of these stories he had been thinking about for years before he actually wrote them down. The book is really not complete however unless you get Robot Visions as well. Robot Visions is actually the better of the two, but you can't miss out of some of the stories in here if you are a fan of his Robot Series.

Whoops! When Ricky offers his gigantic robot friend his parents' minivan as a skateboard substitute, neither mouse nor robot considers the consequences. Sure enough, the skateboarders wipe out, and the van is squashed. Now it's up to the "boys" to earn some money to pay for the damage. "Meanwhile, about 35 million miles away on the planet Mars, there lived a mean little monkey who was hatching an evil plan." Good thing for Ricky and Robot, because, well, one intergalactic battle leads to another, and pretty soon these two have earned themselves a brand-new rocket-powered minivan from the general of the Squeakyville Air and Space Association, in gratitude for saving Earth from Major Monkey and his mecha-monkeys.

Young readers will be pleased as punch to see this latest title in Dav Pilkey's series, which includes Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot vs. the Mutant Mosquitoes from Mercury and Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot vs. the Voodoo Vultures from Venus, all illustrated with Martin Ontiveros's funny black-and-white drawings. 5 out of 5 stars Great for becoming independent readers.......2006-08-10

My son was first drawn to the illustrations in Ricky Ricotta/Mighty Robot series but I held out buying the books because I thought they were "glorified" comic books. However, much to my surprise when I actually read it myself, it was quite hilarious.

The best part was that it was easy enough for my 5 year old to read on his own (with a little help), which was really a major coup as I could not get him to start reading chapter books.

We ended up buying all 7 books and he has already read 4 of them in 2 weeks!

The author's website also has some great games.

5 out of 5 stars This book is great!.......2004-08-22

In this, the fourth Ricky Ricotta book, Ricky and the Mighty Robot face their gravest threat yet. Major Monkey is tired of being alone on Mars, and decides that he will conquer the Earth, and to do that he must first put the Mighty Robot out of the way. Can Ricky save the Mighty Robot and the Earth, all at the same time? You bet he can!

This book is great! The drawings are black-and-white, but are quite funny, and go along great with the story, which is hilarious! My ten-year-old son picked out this book (he's into robots right now), and loved it. The book contains some "Flip-o-rama" pages, where you rapidly flip the pages back and forth and watch the somewhat-animated cartoon, which we both thought was pretty cool. The text is pretty short, and definitely not challenging to him, but he nonetheless loved this book. We highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Pilkey strikes again.......2002-02-13

We just had to get the latest Ricky Ricotta book as my 4 1/2 year old son is in love with Ricky Ricotta and Captain Underpants. I find the Ricky Ricotta series a little less humorous and more boiler plate than the Captain Underpants series, however my son loves them both. The Flip-O-Ramas are great as usual and my son now makes up the sound effects. He also really enjoys going through how to draw each character at the end. He hasn't tried to actually draw them yet. All of the books in this series have a villain from another planet who Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot is able to defeat and put in jail. My son loves seeing the old villains in the jail windows at the end of the story. I sure hope the next book in the series comes out soon because I don't know how long my son can wait. If your kids like Captain Underpants, Ricky Ricotta is likely to be a favorite, although I think some older kids may find it boring in comparison. It is easier to read, however, and would be a good book for a beginning reader to read themselves.

Parents can be forgiven for wondering what it is that appeals about William Joyce's Ping-Pong-headed space hero, Rolie Polie Olie. But read about him and his family to any child under five, and there's no doubting that the attraction of the Rolie Polie Planet is powerful. In this rhyming bedtime adventure, Olie waits for a goodnight story from Pappy (grandpa), but Pappy turns up late and befuddled after a nasty bonk on the head. Olie saves the day by creating a sort of funny ray. (The adult but not the child will be irritated at the inconsistencies here: in one illustration Olie is filling a bucket with tricks and treats, and in the next this has inexplicably become a bubble-gun; equally inexplicably, it's described as a ray-gun.) "Then Olie burst into the room / and with his ray dispelled the gloom. 'I made a Pappy pick-me-up / to help old Pappy ungrow up.'" Shakespeare it isn't, but small kids are better than we are at empathizing with characters whose very souls seem to be made from Ping-Pong balls too. They love it! (Ages 3 to 5) --Richard Farr

This book, Sleepy Time Olie is a great book because it gets kids' imaginations going wild. The illistrations are amazing! I love the adorable characters that seem to come to life with William Joyce's writing. In this book, Joyce writes when Olie's grandpa comes to visit Olie and his family at their house. But Olie's grandpa is is not feeling well.To chear him up, Olie and his sister, Zowie make a neat tool that shoots out bubbles! This really makes Olie's grandpa happy and creates a unique ending to the story. Again, I think this book is great and I reccomend it to any kid younger than 7 years old.

5 out of 5 stars Rolie Olie is Spactolie.......2007-04-20

Sleepy Time Olie is a wonderful book. It has to do with Pappy feeling old and unhappy, so you know Olie has something up his sleeve. Olie creates a gadget that makes Pappy feel Happy and Olie gets to have him read to him before going to sleep. The setting is in my favorite place that they mention (The house) because a little child might get confused so it is easier for them to understand there is only one location. I loved this book and all of the other Rolie Polie Olie books because it fills me with joy and happiness. Even though I grew out of these books it makes me feel five again! I would recommend this book to anybody who loves the Rolie Polie Olie collection. Although William Joyce has better books, Rolie Polie Olie books are books that don't get dusty on the shelf. I still watch these episodes on Disney and laugh out loud.

5 out of 5 stars different but so enticing!!.......2006-11-17

I absolutely enjoy the colors, the text, and how my daughter is pulled into this book as I read it to her. I wasn't impressed with the price but what can you do? Its quality is above Dora's & Caillou's books.
Frankly, at the beginning when we began watching the series on television, I didn't like the idea. When I saw how my daughter wanted mommy to keep the channel on, I left it, and I too now like it a great deal. While reading, you have to try and immitate how the characters speak on television to get into it as a reader (with Zowie my favorite)
I find Caillou books too wordy, while this series is cute with the words rolling off your tongue as a nice change.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations and a fun read.......2006-07-25

My Son is 19 months old. The book is a bit wordy for him, so I have to read a bit quicker...but he enjoys it. He recognizes the characters, and points out all the objects. I'm sure in a few more months, he will ask to read it over and over again.

2 out of 5 stars No research done at all.......2007-08-29

Okay I love the Terminator movies, but this book was just plain bad.

First of all, the author couldn't get the model number of any of the Terminators right. Right in T2, Arnold's character says that he is a "Cyberdyne Systems model 101."

Yet everytime John runs into a terminator in this book with Arnold's face, he always says something like, "He reminds me of Uncle Bob," or "I can't believe we defeated these things back with just bullets." Then saying that it's the same one that went back in time to protect him. When he says they are obviously T-800's or T-1's or some other model number.

And if that wasn't bad enough, the author constantly relied on time paradoxes and going back and forth between two time periods and communicating across time with no rational explaination of why or how this was able to be done.

In short if you love the Terminator movies and the comics, do yourself a favor and skip this one. If you want a real GOOD Terminator book series to read, check out the T2: Infiltrator series.

This was just crap. Then again what do you expect from one of the writers from the New Jedi Order series?

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book That Salvages the T3 Movie Disaster.......2005-11-07

Aaron Allston superbly patches up the gaping holes created by the movie T3: Rise of The Machines. This book gives an exciting and technically competent look at the world as it is in 2029 while providing the reader with a new story that is very much more convincing than the crap created by the introduction of TX in T3. If you are like me and were very dissapointed with T3 the movie, and found it very difficult to believe that a defeated Skynet could produce and send back in time not only the prototype T-1000, but also a fully functional T-X, then this book is for you. Allston deliberately stays away from using TX in this book. The only real link to T-3 is the involvement of one of the Skynet programmers working under General Brewster just before judgment day; otherwise, this could very well be a standalone work that is a brilliant addition to the Terminator series. Another great feature of this book is that the reader "finally" gets a real close-up look at the day-to-day operations of John Connor's resistance. The 2029 battles are superbly described and technically believeable! The action is riveting. Best of all, Allston doesn't fill up the story with a lot of "fluff." The whole story is to the point and keeps your attention throughout. What a story. If I were king for a day, I would erase the movie that "was" T-3 and find some way to adapt this book for the T-3 sequel - It's just that good. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A good book in the terminator universe.......2005-01-28

Judgement Day has happen. Millions are dead. Skynet rules the earth. But John Conner and Kate Brewster lead the resistance for mankind. A member or Conner's intercircle Daniel Avila has found a way to communicate with his younger self. Danny Avila was young programmer who was working on the Skynet. Now the Conner will launch a bold plan to use the Danny of the past so all of mankind can have a future.
This was a good book. Mr. Allston does a great job of taking the Terminator 3 characters to a whole new level. This book moves a good pace that keeps the readers interest. A fan of the terminator movies will want to miss this book.

4 out of 5 stars Allston does it again!.......2004-02-13

I was torn when this book came out. On one hand, I thought Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was a very mediocre film. The fact that not only did it fudge the continuity of the previous films but was also inconsistent within itself did not help matters. So when I heard there was going to be a tie-in novel, and a hardcover to boot, I had no interest in reading it. Then I heard it would be by Aaron Allston. Allston, whose X-Wing novels rank among the best of the Star Wars expanded universe, and whose "Doc Sidhe" novels are also surprisingly good, is one of my favorite escapist writers and he has, I think, the potential to write some Really Good Books down the line. So, as I said, I was torn: I wanted the new Allston book, but I certainly did *not* want to buy a hardcover Terminator novel. Well, I found it cheap, so I bought it. And once more, Allston failed to disappoint.

Allston's writing is not as strong here as in some of his previous novels, but it's still well above the standard for movie tie-in novels. He writes action (and in this novel there's certainly plenty of it) well; this is definitely a page-turner. The characters aren't terribly interesting, but they're consistent and amusing -- one of the things I love about Allston is his ability to make me laugh -- and not *too* clichéd. And if you can forgive the never-quite-explained time-traveling-dreaming thing, the plot is certainly lots of fun to watch unfold.

This novel is much better written and much more entertaining than S.M. Stirling's (now obsolete) T2 trilogy, if not as dense. It also goes a long way toward filling in many of the plotholes and inconsistencies in the Terminator 3 film. It's interesting to see more of Cyber Research Systems' and Skynet's history, as well as a better look than we've seen before (outside of the comics) at the post-Judgment Day future. Although I will say that the future here certainly seems a lot less bleak and grim and horrible than it did in the flashback scenes of the original Terminator film. But I digress.

If you're a Terminator fan, if you've liked any of Allston's other books, or if you're just looking for a fun, action-packed and reasonably well-written leisure read, this is for you. Lots of fun; recommended.

I do wish, though, that Allston had a slightly higher original novel to tie-in novel ratio. I think right now he's got three original novels and eleven books set in various film or RPG universes. I hope he has the chance to even up that score a bit.

Kids hate it when they're left alone with a Robot Babysitter. And why wouldn't they? You can't argue with a computer program that tells you 8:00 Earth time is bedtime... and then at 8:15 reports that you are in violation of your scheduled routine. "The trouble with you, Babysitter, is that you are no fun," complains young Benjamin McFadden. "I'm not programmed for fun," Babysitter answers. So, Benjamin opens up the forbidden panel on Babysitter's back and programs it for fun. Games! Books! Music! Cookies! Fun is had, but when Benjamin gets tired, the robot does not. Much to Benjamin's horror, Babysitter has become an out-of-control fun machine, wreaking complete havoc on the household as the pages explode with flying basketballs, jogging dice, rolling cups of cocoa, and cavorting chess pieces. Desperate, he calls the Babysitter Help Line, and is told that he must use the Ultimate Password to get his dear old boring Babysitter back. What is the Ultimate Password? Luckily, Benjamin figures it out before his parents get home. Kids will like poring over the comical details in Timothy Bush's artful depictions of a futuristic Jetsons-style home, and will easily relate to familiar babysitter-related sentiments and scenarios. An interplanetary robot romp! (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

"Drawing or writing, Bush's pen is loaded with wit."*
Welcome to the spaceship home of Benjamin McFadden--where tennis is played in spacesuits, books are read in zero gravity, and robot babysitters have eight arms and are preprogrammed to send you to bed at 8:00 p.m. sharp. But the night his parents go to the Rings of Saturn Preservation Dance, Benjamin McFadden isn't ready for bed. Taking matters into his own hands, he reprograms Babysitter, and his own private party is soon underway--until Benjamin is finally ready to rest. The only hitch? Now Babysitter wants to party, and Benjamin must stop the festivities before his parents get home. Timothy Bush takes fun and multiplies it by a million in his most far-out book to date, filling it with fanciful illustrations and a story meant especially for fans who thirst for adventure!

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect Adventure Book for a 6-Year-Old Boy!.......2004-11-24

Wow! My 6-year-old son absolutely loves this book! He loves it when the robot babysitter changes her "attitude" and everything is "fun, fun, fun!" It doesn't hurt when Mom makes the robot sound like a robot, either! It's just a fun book for any little boy (or girl, for that matter!). I can highly recommend this book for the 5-7 age range.

4 out of 5 stars Benjamin McFadden and the Robot Babysitter.......2004-09-24

Mrs. Burton's class read this fantasy book about a boy who disobeys his mother and father and it leads to a big disaster. Benjomin is left alone with his robot babysitter and all he wants to do is have fun. When Benjamin disobeyed his parents and reprogrammed his robot babysitter he got more than he expected. This book is an excellent story for young children and adults. To find out more about his adventure buy this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read-Aloud for All Ages.......2003-08-23

I got this book to read to my kindergartener, who adores it, but my 3rd-grader enjoys it just as much. (Actually, I've noticed my husband slips into the room to listen, too!) We have a great time with the voices, and everyone chimes in on the last word. The story appeals to anyone young enough for a babysitter--or anyone who's ever been a babysitter, for that matter--and the illustrations are wonderful for all ages, with so much creative insanity happening on each page that we frequently have to go back after reading it to savor the pictures for a while longer.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2002-08-17

Imaginative fun, with an exasperated protagonist reminsicent of The Cat In The Hat. My two-year-old loves it, and we have fun doing the voices of Babysitter and the Lady from the Babysitter Help Line.

    Timothy Bush ``gets'' kids sensibilities.

5 out of 5 stars This book is rad, dude.......2001-02-28

Benjamin Mc Fadden and the robot baby sitter are by Timothy Bush. Timothy Bush is a great writer and a good illustrator too. This book is great, it's funny and it's good for a bedtime story for kids the age of 3 to 13. Benjamin is a stubborn boy when it comes to bedtime. The book is about a robot baby sitter that's mean. Benjamin reprograms the robot to be fun. The baby sitter reprograms the other robots to be fun too. Then it gets out of control. Then Benjamin says the password, it's pa... sorry you will have to read the book.

I like the end when Benjamin said " What a weird night. " and Fantastic (the robot cat) said something really funny. Then Benjamin looks like the book is going to happen all over again. I recommend this book to Kindergartners though 6th graders because every one can enjoy it. I think 7th graders won't read it because it's too easy to them.

By the way this book takes place in outer space, you can tell from the illustrations.
