    Book Description

Though there has been much speculation on whether flying saucers and the aliens who allegedly favor such craft have any basis in reality, it is a fact that over the years a variety of experimental aircraft that could be described as "flying saucer" types have been developed in different countries right here on earth. Such aircraft have invariably been shrouded in secrecy, and this book finally presents a serious factual study of these mysterious designs. This book covers 20 "flying saucer" and similar aircraft projects in detail, including the Vought V-173 Pancake, the Boeing B390, the German AS-6 and Focke Wulf VTOL saucer, and others. It also covers NASA's research into lenticular lifting body designs, lunar ferry systems, exotic lightship concepts and recent laser propulsion experiments. All of the craft featured in this book are on the cuttin edge of aviation research and will appeal greatly to those fascinated by flying saucers and their sinister or conspirational connections.

While Jung is known mainly for his theories on the nature of the unconscious mind, he did have an interest in the paranormal. In this essay, Jung applies his analytical skills to the UFO phenomenon. Rather than assuming that the modern prevalence of UFO sightings are due to extraterrestrial craft, Jung reserves judgment on their origin and connects UFOs with archetypal imagery, concluding that they have become a "living myth." This essay is intriguing in its methodology and implications as to the nature of UFOs and their relation to the human psyche.

    Book Description

"In the threatening situation of the world today, when people are beginning to see that everything is at stake, the projection-creating fantasy soars beyond the realm of earthly organizations and powers into the heavens, into interstellar space, where the rulers of human fate, the gods, once had their abode in the planets.... Even people who would never have thought that a religious problem could be a serious matter that concerned them personally are beginning to ask themselves fundamental questions. Under these circumstances it would not be at all surprising if those sections of the community who ask themselves nothing were visited by `visions,' by a widespread myth seriously believed in by some and rejected as absurd by others."--C. G. Jung, in Flying Saucers

Jung's primary concern in Flying Saucers is not with the reality or unreality of UFOs but with their psychic aspect. Rather than speculate about their possible nature and extraterrestrial origin as alleged spacecraft, he asks what it may signify that these phenomena, whether real or imagined, are seen in such numbers just at a time when humankind is menaced as never before in history. The UFOs represent, in Jung's phrase, "a modern myth."

    5 out of 5 stars UFO'S AS MANDALAS.......2006-11-30

Though we can come pretty close to taking it for granted that intelligent life exists somewhere out there in the universe, I also take it for granted that this has nothing to do with the UFO phenomenon. However, since so-called UFO's have been sighted by thousands of reputable people, and have been caught on radar, it is clear that they are something. In the 1950's, when FLYING SAUCERS was written, humanity felt itself to be on the brink of self destruction with nuclear weapons. Today, that menace is not only compounded by archaic religious fanaticism, but we also face the even greater threat of global warming. Dr. Jung's notion is that such tensions in the psyche create a potential which expresses itself as manifestation of psychic energy so that a "uniting symbol" is created in the unconscious. Though the idea that UFO's are psychic projections capable of being picked up by radar is hard to take seriously, it is less so than the idea that FTL alien spacecraft have been buzzing around Earth for hundreds of years.

Even is there should turn out to be some physical explanation for UFO's, it is the meaning of the rumor that is of importance. Most alien abductions might well be delusions induced during hypnogogic states of mind, but that explanation does not eliminate the importance of the fact that thousands of people are experiencing such a delusion. Mass-mindedness -- Communism, Corporationism, Nazism, and Christian and Moslem fanaticism -- has proven itself to be the greatest danger facing modern man. So Dr. Jung postulates that the psyche projects a symbol of wholeness, a mandala, in response to this danger. Of course, if mankind ignores this symbolic warning by interpreting it as alien spacecraft, it does us no good.
(Peter Payne, author of CAPTAIN CALIFORNIA: A YOUNG MAN'S ENCOUNTER WITH THE EVIL WITHIN HIMSELF)

5 out of 5 stars Aberations in the Collective Unconscious........2001-08-02

In a world of black helicopters flying overhead, cattle mutilations, and Y2K bugs, these cogent remarks by Jung are all the more relevant. The post-modern era is plagued by millenial hysteria, doomsday cults, and "alien visitations". What does this all mean for modern man? Psychical aberations manifest themselves in mass delusions. What else lurks in the depths of man's soul? And, what else is waiting to rise to the surface? We can only speculate.

5 out of 5 stars imaginal symbols of wholeness.......2000-06-02

Jung's interpretation of flying saucers as compensatory Self symbols of wholeness required by an era of psychological fragmentation is both brilliant and well-developed in this fine little book.

5 out of 5 stars THE BASIS FOR UFOs PSYCHO-SOCIOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION.......1999-08-24

What Jung did with this book is, fundamentally, setting the honest basis for UFO intereptation from a psychological point of view. That's why the open postulates he gained from this inquiry have generated many controversies and strumentalization among the ufologists' field. UFOs - says Jung - may be psycho-sociological phenomena which come from both the inner symbolic human subconscious AND from our technological era's imaginism. However, those hardly conventionally explainable episode may even - in Jung's own opinion - be a HARD and MATERIAL phenomenon, which may be explained with extraterrestrial visits. From this point of view, the sociological redutionism slips towards a postume status, leaving the question as open as ever. Definitely, the book you should be starting with if you like the subject.

    Book Description

Erich von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods is a work of monumental importance--the first book to introduce the shocking theory that ancient Earth had been visited by aliens. This world-famous bestseller has withstood the test of time, inspiring countless books and films, including the author's own popular sequel, The Eyes of the Sphinx. But here is where it all began--von Daniken's startling theories of our earliest encounters with alien worlds, based upon his lifelong studies of ancient ruins, lost cities, potential spaceports, and a myriad of hard scientific facts that point to extraterrestrial intervention in human history. Most incredible of all, however, is von Daniken's theory that we ourselves are the descendants of these galactic pioneers--and the archeological discoveries that prove it... * An alien astronaut preserved in a pyramid
    * Thousand-year-old spaceflight navigation charts
    * Computer astronomy from Incan and Egyptian ruins
    * A map of the land beneath the ice cap of Antarctica
    * A giant spaceport discovered in the Andes
Includes remarkable photos that document mankind's first contact with aliens at the dawn of civilization.

1 out of 5 stars An archetypal example of 1970's fluffy pseudoscience drivel.......2007-08-19

    [Review written in Nov 2006]

I'll be brief, because the book doesn't deserve more time than that.

This book is one of the archetypal examples of 1970's fluffy pseudoscience drivel, which is practically a genre unto itself.

This particular example has long since been debunked by many reputable scientist authors, and at considerable length. I only reviewed this book because it was a best seller in it's day, and people still talk about it. Then again, supermarket tabloids are best sellers too, so that's not saying an awful lot.

In any case, just for the sake of completeness, I read this book as a young, gullible, and naieve teen back in the mid-late 1970's, when shows like "In Search Of", "Project Blue Book", UFO sightings, and things like "streaking", acid rock, smoking recreational drugs, poor personal hygine and rampant anti-intellectualism were all the rage in pop culture, and things like CB Radio, Walkie Talkies, and pocket calculators were the newfangled high-brow hobbies of the day for adolescent geeks like me.

Decades later, as an educated, rational and moderately well read and informed adult ... it's almost unreadable.

    Save your time and money.

3 out of 5 stars This is not the show from the 1970-'s.......2007-07-14

Too many people are not reviewing the correct program. This is not a movie, it is also not the show from the 1970's narrated by Rod Serling. This is a remake (and update of information) from 1997. It has that guy from Home Improvement as the host (not Tim Allen)...Richard Karn. Eric Von Daniken and Richard K travel the globe showing old and new sites. It is an OK show but not the best. It was from 1997 and broadcast on TV. Keep watching the skies. The aliens return on Christmas day 2012, not sure why or what they want (so the Myan calendar tells us).

    Book Description

The Government knows all about UFOs. And it knows all about you, too...

Since 1947, official agencies across the world, including the CIA, the FBI, the United States Air Force, the National Security Agency, and the British Ministry of Defense, have undertaken clandestine UFO investigations and have compiled thousands of pages of classified documentation on this strange, unearthly subject. But, in their quest for the truth about UFOs, those same agencies have been secretly spying on you, as well.

It isn't paranoia if you think "they" are watching you: they really are!

Revealed for the first-time from on-the-record interviewees, an analysis of previously-classified official records, and testimony provided by insider-sources, is the amazing story about how and why Military, Intelligence, and Government departments keep a close watch on those people that look for, and see, UFOs.

Highlights of On the Trail of the Saucer Spies include:

    * The FBI's reports on people who claim to have met extraterrestrials*

    * Top Secret surveillance of alien-abductees *

    * The real-life Men in Black who spy on UFO witnesses *

    * Phone-tapping and mail-interference of UFO researchers and authors *

    * Scotland Yard's secret monitoring of UFO computer-hackers *

    * Classified files on researchers of the famous Roswell crash of 1947 *

    * Official infiltration of Flying Saucer research groups *

    * UFO writers suspected by the Government of working for hostile nations to uncover defense secrets*

*The author's own experience of being spied upon by the British Ministry of Defense for his interest in UFOs*

5 out of 5 stars Solves the UFO Mystery.......2006-09-06

Redfern's latest book is so amazing it's completely mind-blowing. I don't want to give any the truly astounding evidence he has unearthed but let's just say I'll be forever thankful for Redfern's sleuthing skills. I, myself, had a very close encounter with a big, black flat triangle, preceded by spheres of light, each a different color, doing inexpliable manuevers on the horizon. So Redfern had been kind enough to respond to an enquiry I emailed him and he mentioned some evidence to me and then this new book gave the details on what he had mentioned.

Holy cow! Redfern has played a truly crucial role in the conditioning feedback that Jacque Vallee talked about -- how there appears to be this huge psy-op agenda that is increasingly guiding the masses, through mass media, to a deeper level of conspiracy.

5 out of 5 stars They've been watching all along...And Redfern Can Prove It!.......2006-06-01

Nick Redfern is the one authority on UFOs and government cover-ups that wins my total trust. His meticulous research, smooth style, and occasional well-placed wit make for books that simply cannot be argued against as he proposes that the governments and military agencies of many a nation have long been interested in keeping a spying eye on UFO witnesses, researchers and investigators.

"On The Trail of the Saucer Spies" documents the below-the-radar interest of the U.S. and British official agencies in all things ufological, focusing on clandestine investigations carried out on the parts of the CIA, FBI, Air Force, NSA and British MoD, since 1947. In many cases, the sinister spying has served to undermine legitimate UFO research, and even the researchers themselves, as thousands of classified documents show.

Redfern lays out the blow by blow agendas of these mysterious agencies, along with many eye-witness reports and anecdotes from those who've been spied on (including himself!). As a researcher, Redfern does his best to unturn every stone, with a sense of objectivity and a strong curiosity that propels him to boldly go where few researchers have gone before, even if it means getting his own butt tailed by the Feds. He covers everything from the bizarre Men In Black to Area 51 and the alleged crashes at Roswell and Bentwaters, and a whole lot of stuff you may never have heard of, but should know about, some courtesy of his underground source known only as "The Sandman."

The story of Paul Bennewitz is most chilling. Paul was a physicist who, in the late 1970's, began digging into Air Force and NSA secret projects, and soon found his life unravelling at the hands of sinister forces bent on preventing him from getting too close to the truth. Other chilling stories include one about an abductee who "came out" of an abduction to see actual humans in black fatigues in her room. They even apologized before they hustled away in their black helicopter!

"On The Trail of the Saucer Spies" is great late-night, page-turning reading that will no doubt have you looking over your shoulder, especially in this day of domestic spying. If you are a UFO buff, all the more reason to read up, and be prepared for anything.

5 out of 5 stars Saucer Spies - UFO Reality.......2006-03-11

It would seem fair to say that at least for the last year, Nick Redfern has been the hottest topic around when it comes to UFO related books. Back in June 2005 we had Body Snatchers, the story about what really happened at Roswell, and now we have Saucer Spies, the history of American and British Intelligence agency observation of Ufologists.

Now when you read that last sentence it makes a kind of natural sense. After all, you would think, of course the Intelligence agencies are going to watch Ufologists and they are going to smack them sharply on the nose like a naughty puppy if any of them get too close to any kind of truth.

Except that's not how it was. It seems that the spooks couldn't care less what researchers found out about UFOs, which isn't very nice of them. Their interest it appears was more to do with the concern that some Ufologists might be using an interest in the subject as a cover for less patriotic activities. Like for instance spying for a foreign power, and so on.

And Nick Redfern should know as he himself was watched by the UK's Special Branch for a number of years. You see, Nick kept company with very bad men. Matthew Williams, Matthew Bevan and Robin Cole were all dastardly villains because they too were Ufologists and rather than just sitting lamely back and fiddling with their widgets, they got off their backsides and either broke into restricted government buildings to get answers or hacked into the Pentagon's computer system, or, as in Robin's case, had the temerity to actually write a pamphlet on what the GCHQ (UK equivalent of the NSA) knew about UFOs.

But not satisfied with just consorting with these grave threats to the security of the realm, Nick further compounded his attraction to Special branch by standing outside Porton Down, the UK government's centre for biological warfare research, and noting down the car registration numbers of people driving in and out of the base. Why would a Ufologist want to do that for God's sake? I'm afraid the answer is in the book.

Nick covers Adamski, Newton/Scully/Gebauer, Van Tassel, Albert Bender, Men in Black, the real story behind some alien abductions, APEN - a mysterious group of UK individuals from the political far right, the Berwyn Mountain incident, Jenny Randles meeting with "Robert", animal mutilations, the escapades of Matthew Williams, Matthew Bevan's hacking into the Pentagon, the Provost and Security Services, direct approaches to Ufologists by AFOSI, and much, much more. In particular, Nick has the assistance of a former Special Branch detective who he calls The Sandman who, years after the events described in Nick's book, is quite happy to confirm and clear up and explain what was going on and why.

This is an excellently researched and well written and informative book that casts Ufology in another perspective. It is a perspective that some may feel uncomfortable with but you need to remember that this is a Nick Redfern book and Nick isn't in to tucking us up all safe and snug at night. What this is is a further clarification of the UFO Reality and that reality isn't exactly what a lot of Ufologists currently believe it to be. Prepare to be disturbed.

By digging up and adding to the 1950 manuscript of writer DeWayne B. Johnson, researcher Kenn Thomas (author of "Popular Alienation," "The Octopus: The Secret Government and Death of Danny Casolaro" and publisher of the Steamshovel Press) has shown in "Flying Saucers Over Los Angeles" that UFOs are as American as unlimited defense spending, and are not the sole obsession of nutjobs. The book chronicles dozens of provocative news accounts from the 1940s onward, including the "Battle of Los Angeles" in February 1942, in which the US military fired over 1,400 rounds of ammunition at a strangely shaped craft, which General George Marshall thought was an enemy spycraft. The book cites umpteen examples of sightings of saucer and cigar-shaped craft in the period after World War II, as seen by credible witnesses, such as police and pilots. Even in the 1950s, before the age of massive distrust in the government, there were just too many sightings to be dismissed as mass hysteria, hallucinations, weather balloons, aerial phenemona, etc. Johnson's work, as relayed and amplified by Thomas, also explores explanations of alien technology, but comes down on the side of UFOs being military-created. Overall, the Johnson/Thomas approach to the material is well-researched, responsible, logical and void of histrionics. There's even a very entertaining appendix of news clippings from the 1940s and 1950s, which not only puts the history of UFO study into perspective, but also provides a window to the social history of the period through the other news stories that shared the newspapers' pages. The language of "journalism" in these mid-century pieces from the LA Daily News, The LA Times, and the Daily Mirror (yes, Angelenos once had a choice of more than one bad paper) is often quaint, hilarious, and creepily contemporary. For instance, one front page story recounts a Kevorkian-style mercy killing trial. Such nuggets are all a bonus for readers interested in getting an introduction to the history of the UFO situation in America, or to bolstering their viewpoints. History is indeed on the side of those who know that strange, top-secret objects flit around the sky on a daily basis, and that they're footing the bill for it all.

        Book Description

Someone is using top-secret information about saucer technology, information that comes from the mysterious top-secret region in Nevada known as Area 51. Meanwhile, Charley takes up flying space planes to the moon for the French lunar base project. There she discovers a madman and a world-threatening antigravity beam…

When Charley sees how high the stakes are, she needs the kind of help that only Rip can bring her—by prying his saucer out of the hands of the U.S. Government and hurtling it toward the moon...

A furious duel is in the offing between a megalomaniac bent on the conquest of Earth and a handful of runaway heroes. As a plot that reaches back 50 years explodes, a horrific weapon is trained on the Earth’s cities; humankind is dragged to the brink and offered a fearsome choice: surrender or death...

5 out of 5 stars The Day The Earth Stood Still (or at least I did).......2007-04-22

Great '50s sci-fi space opera in the best Heinlein-esque tradition; ray guns, robots and rocket ships. I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down. So, why doesn't Amazon sell "Saucer"? I can't find it anywhere on the site. I went looking for the start of the series but could not find it anywhere. Too bad, lost another sale to Barnes and Noble's.

4 out of 5 stars Great Pulp Story.......2007-03-26

I found this in a discount bin at Barnes & Noble and couldn't resist. I have never read any of his books before, so it sounded like a good start.

This is classic pulp fiction and as some other reviewers alluded to, it reminds me of the serials from the 30's and 40's. I don't think that is a problem at all and in fact, it gives the story a nice bit of charm. Others have already gone into the plot details so I won't rehash them. Instead, I will give my impressions of the story as a whole.

This book was a lot of fun to read and kept me engrossed. The chapters are not too long and there are plenty of scene breaks where you can take a rest. I read a lot during commercials when watching TV, so the short scenes are great. The story moves fast but not too fast. The science is believable based on my limited knowledge, and even if not realistic, is realistic enough.

In fact, my one criticism is that the story is too real. It takes an alien spacecraft, and makes it a little too much like a regular old airplane. The basis of the saucers are truly sci-fi, but he somewhat kills the fantasy with his obvious real experience as a pilot. So, for an object being so old yet so advanced, it sometimes comes off as just an advanced airplane (okay, jet, to be technical) rather than a real alien flying saucer. However, that is only a minor criticism and it did not dampen my enjoyment of the story.

Overall, this was well worth the time and I am going to look for the first one in the series. Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Science Fiction from the 1930s.......2006-07-02

This book lacks the interesting plots, strong characters, and technical authenticity that I associate with most of Coonts' work. Instead we get an egomaniac intent on reforming the world with a single superweapon,a device that got old while H.G. Wells was still using it. Long before mid book, the outcome is clear and the only motivations to finish are determination, a mild interest in the precise details chosen, and a fading hope that the old Coonts may show up. The characters are not totally shallow, but I never felt very worried about their safety, nor very concerned if I turned out wrong and they got clobbered. Technology in "Saucer" consists of long words and simplistic physics including an antigravity weapon that works backwards when the hero reverses the power leads. This is about as likely as turning the plug around on your air conditioner to heat your house in the winter. If you want to spend money on Coonts, buy any of the Grafton series and leave "Saucer" on the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as its predecessor.......2006-06-10

The modern military novel has often been compared to science fiction, and I own some technothrillers that have been written by authors known primarily for science fiction, but Coonts' second attempt at the genre shows that he should stick to things more grounded in reality. Not only did it feel like it had been dashed off over a weekend or two simply to fulfill a contractual obligation, it was as if he was under orders to provide some sort of right-wing balance to the material--I saw better French bashing on the Bruce Campbell show Jack of All Trades - The Complete Series. The only real reason to buy this book is to complete a collection.

3 out of 5 stars Based on an Untruth.......2006-04-22

This is another book that lingered too long in expensive editions before finally making it to mass market. Having fully enjoyed the first book I was just waiting for a chance to read the sequel. I found the book to be good but somewhat disappointing. As a pulp-like story it was fast and fun but as a modern-day techno-thriller it was lacking. Most of the lack was caused by a simple failure of common knowledge.

Rip is back and very wealthy due to patents he and his uncle hold based on the saucer technology. Girlfriend Charlie has left from boredom and taken an offer to join the French space service and travel to their permanent base on the Moon. But while flying out to the Moon Charlie discovers that there is a dangerous secret agenda in the French space service. Once on the Moon she manages to find out more information and flees back to Earth. Soon the whole world knows some of what she knows and the world powers find the balance of power shifting. Rip and Charlie may be able to set things right.

While this is a fun and fast read there were a few facts that ruined the realism. The space planes used by the French seem to be gigantic with loads of extra space aboard. This takes away from the attempt at realistically colonizing the Moon. But the real big error is with a nuclear reactor. The author apparently knows nothing about what one is, how it works, its size, its weight, or its portability. Too much of the books action relies on the false understanding of this piece of hardware. I do not mean the reactor on the saucer, that can remain in the realm of "superscience" and not affect the story. This refers to an actual human-build nuclear reactor. Of course if you know as little as the author about the subject, you won't see the blaring flaws. So if you hold this story in a class with the pulps, where science is pseudo at best, then the story is really quite fun. Otherwise it misses.
