Great stuff! The kids love it!

3 out of 5 stars This takes MAGIC to a whole new meaning!.......2006-11-02

This book half magic is about 4 siblings with a very boring dull life. Especially ever sense there dad died, it's up to their mom to raise them. So that makes their life even more boring. But this summer was going to make them see things in a whole new way. This book is funny interesting easy book to pick up and read and a hard book to put down. I loved Half Magic because it was an enjoyable book and it is worth while!

5 out of 5 stars Love Magic.......2006-04-23

love the book Half Magic, so I got the set of 6. just lovely!

but, had to laugh - Amaz said "reading level 4 - 8" uhh. dunno to many 4 years reading chapter books. I read it in 6th grade, that's about 10 or 12?

magical, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars if you're a fan of E. Nesbit books, you'll like these.......2006-01-09

E. Nesbit was one of J.K. Rowling's favorite authors when she was growing up. We've enjoyed her books as well as the Harry Potter books and the Narnia books. Apparently Edward Eager is a fan of E. Nesbit as well -- he mentions it in Half Magic.

This series was written some time ago (and the copyright was recently renewed by, I assume, an heir of the author), back when "Technicolor" movies were brand new, and people still commonly travelled in Pullman cars (on trains). They take place in the US, unlike the books I mentioned above. I love the fact that this author mentions other books, real works of literature that have been anjoyed by his characters, it's a really nice touch.

We have read Half Magic and just started Knight's Castle. I don't know if they are all sequential, but we were glad we made the attempt to read them in order -- we got them from the library and the order wasn't readily apparent without checking the original publishing dates. We found a completely new set of children in the second book, but then discovered that their Mom was one of the children from the first book. If you read them out of order, no major plot points are probably given away (I can't say for sure since we're not even finished with the 2nd book yet), but it's more of a treat to read them in the right order and see the kids from the first story all grown up.

I highly recommend these books!

5 out of 5 stars I met these books in 1966 and they still are the best ! .......2004-07-24

A very good children's librarian recommended these to me the summer that I was 9 years old - I remember being sad as I finished each one but later begging my Mom to buy me all of the books in the series so that I could enjoy them again and again. The children in the stories are witty, not easily fooled and have independent minds - so different from many other book children of the time. I think my favorite is the 7 year old spunky Martha in the first two. Of course we have all wanted to go on a Quest with knights and damsels in distress. I just introduced my husband to the series and he loved them as well - I say snap up this set as quickly as possible and enjoy the pure magic.

Karen Elizabeth Gordon is no ordinary grammarian, and her works (including The New Well-Tempered Sentence, Torn Wings and Faux Pas, and The Disheveled Dictionary)--are no ordinary books of grammar. A special edition of the 1984 classic, The Deluxe Transitive Vampire is populated by a wickedly decadent cast of gargoyles, mastodons, murderous debutantes, and, yes, vampires (both transitive and otherwise), who cavort and consort in order to illustrate basic principles of grammar. The sentences are intoxicating--"How he loved to dangle his participles, brush his forelock off his forehead with his foreleg, and gaze into the aqueous depths"--but the rules and their explanations are as sound as any you might find in Strunk and White. Outlining the building blocks of the English language, from parts of speech to phrases and clauses, The Deluxe Transitive Vampire goes on to exorcise such grammatical demons as passive voice, fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences. At last, a handbook of grammar you will actually want to read. In the words of Gordon's preface, "Howling, exploding, crackling, flickering with new life-forms, and drunk on fresh blood (some of mine is certainly missing), this deluxe edition reminds us on every page that words, too, have hoofs and wings to transport us far and deep."

Book Description

Playful and practical, this is the style book you can't wait to use, a guide that addresses classic questions of English usage with wit and the blackest of humor. Black-and-white illustrations throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Grammar goes beyond boring.......2007-03-05

The subject of English grammar tends to conjure up vision of stern gray-haired teachers who look like they suck on lemons between classes. This book breaks the stereotype while achieving the almost impossible: making the acquisition of a firm grasp of grammatical conventions enjoyable.

Starting with the basic of the sentence and progressing through parts of speech, and the nuances of verbs and pronouns, the illustrations attract the reader's attentions and the offbeat and tongue-in-cheek examples keep it. Progressing through more complicated structures and finishing off with sentence construction, this is the most fun I have ever had while reviewing sound grammatical style.

The somewhat risqué nature of some of the pictures and content keep this book from being a staple in the average classroom, but its judicious use can pique the interest of even the most grammar-adverse student.

Personally, I would not allow any high school student to unrestricted access to this book because it would destroy the no-fun, sourpuss, and asexual image that English teachers have worked so hard and so long to create. Students actually wanting to read a grammar book would bring absolute chaos the mundane universe of language.

3 out of 5 stars Not much to say, really..........2007-02-28

Karen Elizabeth Gordon, The Deluxe Transitive Vampire (Pantheon, 1993)

Gordon followed up The Well-Tempered Sentence with The Transitive Vampire, so it stood to reason that the tenth-anniversary revision of the first would would be followed by one for the second. And there's nothing terribly new here; once again, sticklers will find a few things to attack, while the rest of the world will be perfectly happy with everything represented here. If you liked the first one, you'll like the second. ***

Absolutely wonderful, fun book. I used it recently to teach adults in my classes on Memoir. They needed help in understanding verbs and basic sentence structure--very helpful and a great teaching tool!

Edward Eager has been delighting young readers for more than 40 years with stories that mix magic and reality. Half Magic, the most popular of his tales about four children who encounter magical coins, time-travel herb gardens, and other unlikely devices, is a warm, funny, original adventure. The title refers to a coin that the children find. Through a comical series of coincidences, they discover that the coin is magic. Well, it's not totally magic--it's only (you guessed it) half magic. That means there's a certain logic to the wishes one must make to generate a desired outcome. Imagine the results emerging from inaccurate efforts: half invisible, half rescued, half everything! Half Magic is never too cute, and with just enough emotion to complement the magic, this classic is sure to hold a special place in any child's library. If you love Half Magic, its sequels--Knight's Castle, The Time Garden, and Magic by the Lake--have also been reissued in lovely hardcover editions, complete with N.M. Bodecker's original illustrations and covers by Quentin Blake. (Ages 8 to 12)

Book Description

Since Half Magic first hit bookshelves in 1954, Edward Eager’s tales of magic have become beloved classics. Now four cherished stories by Edward Eager about vacationing cousins who stumble into magical doings and whimsical adventures are available in updated hardcover and paperback formats. The original lively illustrations by N. M. Bodecker have been retained, but eye-catching new cover art by Kate Greenaway Medalist Quentin Blake gives these classics a fresh, contemporary look for a whole new generation.

4 out of 5 stars Half Magic.......2007-04-20

Is Jane's theory of magic real?
Jane found a quarter lying on the ground, so she picked it up and wished that there would be a fire nearby. After a few minutes her wish came true. Did the fire just happen by accident or did the quarter do it?
The main characters in the story are Jane, Katherine, Mark, and Martha. Jane is the oldest and smartest. She is also a nice girl.
Katherine is hard to explain because she doesn't show herself that much. She is a shy, but very sweet girl. Mark is the only boy in his family, he is a brave boy, but sometimes he wishes he had a brother. Martha is the youngest in the family and can't stay stare into space doing nothing then she will get bored and will want to go on an adventure.
Jane is very secretive about her quarter because she thinks it is magic, but is it? Will they ever know what Jane is hiding from them? Later in the story their mom meets Mr. Smith. They like Mr. Smith but Jane has other thoughts about him. Jane doesn't want Mr. Smith to marry her mom because she doesn't want anybody to replace her dad. She loves him and misses him a lot. Will their mom get married to Mr. Smith? This is a fun, exciting, and adventures book. If you like magic this is a perfect story for you. It doesn't let the book down. So don't just sit there, go to a library or a store an get your hands on Half Magic.

4 out of 5 stars Half Magic.......2007-04-17

Half Magic is about these kids who have to spend the summer with their baby sitter, and it is very hot and they have nothing to do. So, on the way to the library, they find something on the side walk that is magic. The kids have discovered things that were odd and are excited about what will happen next. So read and see what will happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes things that will appear randomly.

3 out of 5 stars Half Magic.......2007-04-13

Half Magic by Edward Eager is an okay book that I would recommend to people that get entertained easily. It is about these four children who find a magic stone. But there is a catch to the stone. It only grants half of the wish that they wish for. So they half to wish for twice as much as they really need. And with each wish, the stone wears down more and more. Some crazy stuff happens to these kids. But I will tell you about them later.
I told you there was four main characters, the children, but I am only going to tell you about Jane and Mark. Jane is mostly happy all the time, but in a couple parts angry, and she acts like she is really loving to all of her siblings. She is the oldest of the four children, she is one of three girls, and she is the only one with really long hair. She is very adventurous and outgoing. She is fun but sometimes boring, and she is stubborn sometimes. She really acts like a lady, and she is always neat and tidy. And now, on to Mark. Mark is probably the smartest kid that any of the four children know. I think he feels superior to every one else. And he is very confused about the whole stone concept. He is the second tallest out of all of the children. He is the only boy out of the children, and has short hair and wears glasses. He is smart, somewhat nosy, and he acts very mature. He behaves smart, he is sometimes silly, but he is always mature.
The places these kids go to are crazy and amazing. They go to an old town, where everybody talks funny, and there are knights in armor everywhere. Another place they go to is a desert. It's sandy, hot, stuffy, and they can't see anything beyond five feet. The mom takes the stone on accident and wishes she was home, but she was only half way there, so she ended up in the middle of no where at like eleven at night. All there is there is a road, some bushes, and a car that gives her a ride to her house back home. But most of all of the adventures happen at the children's house. You will have to read the book to find out what happens to the children in these places, though.
Half Magic by Edward Eager is a mediocre book that I would suggest this book to mature readers that have nothing to do on a Saturday night but read a book. Have fun!

Roger, Anne, Eliza, and Jack find a magic way to go back into the time of Robin Hood, Rebecca, and Ivanhoe.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Attention history and fantasy lovers!.......2006-07-21

Four children and a magical toy castle, what could happen? Everything! When Ann and Roger visit their cousins in Baltimore, Roger is given a toy castle, with toy figures from Ivanhoe and other legends. But the tables turn when they find they can become part of the world that Robin Hood, Rebecca, and Maurice De Bracey inhabited. Can the children solve the problems that they cause as they change the plots of these famous stories? If you like history, and fantasy this book is a definite read. I absolutely adored it!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The interesting book.......2004-06-04

The book is interesting and funny. It's all about four children, two of whom must go to their cousin's house because it is close to the hospital where their dad will be treated. Suddenly, one the children's toys comes to life and starts talking. He tells them about a magic world and offers them a wish. They want their father to be well, but for that to happen, they have to earn the wish by living in the toy's world - in the time of Robin Hood!
As the children play in the world, they end up messing up history. They even play baseball with the Saxons.
This was a funny book. There were so many funny parts, that I don't have a favorite

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Half-Magic.......2003-03-21

I've read all books by Eager from the Magic Box set, and I would rate them in this order (from best to worst):
    1)Half-Magic
    2)The Time Garden
    3)Magic by the Lake
    4)Knight's Castle

Knight's Castle was confusing and not as funny as it tried to be. It is about 4 children that live in the story of Ivanhoe and Robin Hood at night. However, there were some good moments between Roger and his sister Ann.
If I were a child between 9-12, I think I would have loved all of them. However, Eager's books are not as modern as J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, and won't be enjoyed as much by adults.

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start with Eager.......2002-08-03

...This is a simple little tale of a group of children who discover a little bit of magic in an old toy soldier. In Eager's work, magic has fairly strict rules (in _Half-Magic_, the charm granted any wish--but only in halves), and here the rules work as a kind of companion to the idea that magic can only work if you continue to believe in it (that is, if you start to think of the creatures you are interacting with simply as dolls, they revert to being dolls again). The plot achieves its urgency through a possible problem in the family, but, with a little help, everything can be solved. A little more moralistic and straight-forward than some of his others, but well worth reading--especially if you've never tried Eager before.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books ever written!.......2002-08-01

I first read Eager's books as a child and I have been reading them on and off for the last twenty-five years (I keep a complete collection in my bedroom and I read them whenever I want a good laugh).

Eager writes on two levels--there is something in this (and all of his books) for both children and adults. As a kid, I loved Roger, Ann, Eliza and Jack because they aren't perfect and because they have their own squabbles and flaws. As an adult, I find them refreshing in their honesty---Eliza, especially, always lets you know how she feels!

The story is wonderful and begins with the scenario of all great children's books (missing or distracted parents). Roger and Ann's father requires emergency surgery and the family travels east to Baltimore for the operation. A visit to Aunt Katherine's is to be dreaded b/c of cousins Jack and Eliza (as Ann puts it "Jack and Eliza---help!). Jack is camera-obsessed while Eliza was the bossiest nine year old on the block before she moved to Baltimore.

But...a magical gift from Uncle Mark brings the cousins together. A castle complete with all the characters from Ivanhoe comes magically alive every three nights and Jack, Eliza, Ann and Roger are soon embarked on a variety of quests. Somehow tho' nothing seems to work out quite as Roger, Jack, Eliza and Ann plan---Ivanhoe is nearly captured when Roger spills the beans about his hidden presence in the castle, an attempt to modernize 'ye merrie England' results in Ivanhoe's experimenting with space travel and so on. Gradually, Roger realizes that he needs to perform a great deed if he is to help his father recover and he, Ann, Jack and Eliza draw on their own inner strengths to perform the necessary quest and save chivalry for ever.

Don't miss out on this book! Half Magic, Magic By the Lake (which deal with Roger and Ann's mom and her siblings) and The Time Garden (which features Jack, Eliza, Ann and Roger) are among the best children's books written this century. I won't compare them to the Harry Potter books (equally great!) but I will say that if you loved Harry Potter, you will love Edward Eager.

    5 out of 5 stars Seven-Day Magic.......2007-02-28

There were five friends who were all in the library one day talking about what kind of books are their favorites. Barnaby said that the best kind of book is a magical book. Everyone had agreed that magic books were the best. Barnaby, John, Susan, Abbie and Fredricka each had a different kind of magic book that they liked. All of them knew that books were magical but today is the day they find out that some books are more magical then others.

As they were ready to check out of the books that got in the library. Susan finds a book on the ground and she picks it up and decides to pick it up. After she checks it out she starts reading it and finds out that it is about her friends and her. They rest of the pages were blank, it was them to fill in pages with their own adventures. Since they are making the adventures if they wish te wrong adventure the story won't end happily ever after.

I really liked the book. I liked it because it was a magic book and also because it involed children. I would also recomend his other books such as half magic and the well wishers.

5 out of 5 stars amazing, like all eager books.......2005-02-27

As always, Edward Eager did it again. Every book of his is just plain magical, and I zoom through them faster than the blink of an eye. I love reading and all books whatsoever, and fantasy stories especially appeal to me. John, Susan, Abbie, Barnaby and Fredericka are beautifully portrayed and every word will keep you wishing for more. I love writing stories along with reading, and I hope to someday have his skills!
Oh, what all of us wouldn't give for that magical red book.

I love all Roald Dahl books, too, and since all of his books were illustrated by Quentin Blake, it was delightful to see his artwork on the cover of this edition.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributes to all of these fantastic books being published -- I appreciate every one of you!

Barnaby, Abbie, Fredericka, John, and Susan LOVE books! Every Saturday they go to the library and take out some. When the story starts, they are sitting in the library. "The best kind of book is a magic book," said Barnaby. "Naturally," said John. "The best kind of magic book," said Barnaby, "is when it's about ordinary people like us, and then something happens and it's magic." "Like when you find a nickel, but it isn't at all a nickel, it's a half-magic talisman," said Susan. "Or you're playing and someone asks you `Is this the road to Butterfield?'" said Abbie. "Only it isn't, it's the road to Oz!" shrilled Fredericka. Then, just as they're checking out, Susan grabbed an interesting-looking red book. The Librarian looked at her strangely, but just said, "That's a seven-day book." On the way home, Susan read aloud from her book. "'The best kind of book is a magic book,' said Barnaby. `Naturally,' said John. `The best kind of magic book,'"...... Her voice trailed off. The grand adventure had begun. Through this great work of literature, Edward Eager expresses comedy, drama, novelty, and fun! The red book was magic and if somebody picked it up it would turn into whatever kind of book they liked best. Since John, Susan, Barnaby and Fredericka wanted a magic book, it turned into one that they could wish upon, and wrote down whatever they did. A dragon captures Fredericka. They visit what happened after the book Half Magic ended. John and Susan's Grandmother accidentally wishes herself to be in her "prime," and they find themselves in an old schoolhouse fifty years ago. Then they go to Fredericka, Barnaby and Abbie's father's T.V. Studio, and make him famous singing "Chickadee Tidbits." Then, when they refuse to return the book to the library, the book makes them argue. Barnaby finds himself staring into a magic pool, hypnotized with the horribleness of his worst deeds. Can the children save him? You should definitely read this five star book to find out!!!
I really enjoyed reading Seven-Day Magic! I thought that it's neat how it flashes into other books, (even prehistoric Oz)! This book is extremely well written, and it can make you laugh, (or bite your fingernails). One of the best parts is the way that Mrs. Funkhouser defeats the dragon! The magic book turns into a cook book, and tells her to "use salt to put out fire" and to "use household ammonia to heal scratches." The dragon's fire and teeth went away. The dragon said, "Hey, St. George would have been more dignified!" This is one of my favorite books, and you'll like it too!

5 out of 5 stars seven day magic.......2002-11-25

seven day-magic is an amazingly magical book. It is about 5 children(Abbie, john,Susan,Barnaby, and Fredricka) who finds a magic book that changes their lives forever. Everyone gets a wish, even granny! Sometimes they don't get what they wanted and their wish turns into a disaster!! They can only have the book for 7 days. the book was the best thing that ever happened to them,so on the seventh day they are sad to take the book back. This would be a great book for anyone that likes magic. Anyone at any age can read this book. Almost anyone can relate to any of the characters! I definitely suggest this book!!

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant but a little pale.......2005-10-07

When the characters of a book spend the whole thing wondering if what's been going on is real magic or not, it' safe to assume the magic is not dramatic and thunderous.

That's how it is in this book. A group of children go around the countryside together, getting to know the people in the village, and doing good deeds that don't always turn out as they'd planned. Watching the children become fast friends, though one of them is thorny and another is goofy and a bit of a reject, is the best part of the book. The plot isn't predictable, but its surprises are mild.

I agree that Half Magic and Magic By the Lake, by the same author, pack more punch. But this one's nice for filling in if you've read those and want another Edward Eager fix, or if you just want to while away a summer day.

4 out of 5 stars We are the magic.......2003-11-11

First, I recommend that you read the book "Half-Magic" first. That is Mr. Eager's best book, and it sets the tone for every other book he wrote. You get a feel for the type of characters he has in his stories, and the theme of magic having rules, which is absolutely critical in this book.

This books' charm is that Mr. Eager is so vague about the children's; wishes being magic or not that you are left wondering. This is not as overt as his other books, and it is this subtlety that energizes me.

We all know that magic has rules-read G. K. Chesterton's essay "The Ethics of Elf-Land"-but this book takes that idea to the next level. The magic is not magic at all, but just our godlike powers of doing good and helping other people.

This book is a great way to get your children to do right. Start out with "Half Magic,' and teach you children that magic, along with everything else, has rules. Then introduce them to this series of books, which teaches that magic is just us doing the right thing. This will save you many lectures and fights sine the morality is coated in a fairy tale.

A great alternative to Harry Potter.

In Magic or Not, Chris, Lydia, James and Laura do good turns for people. Laura and James' family move to a new house that has a wishing well in front of it. Whether this well is magic or not, you'll have to find that out yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Is This Story Magic?.......2002-09-24

Magic or Not is one of the fabulous books written by Edward Egaer. In this fine story Kip, Lydia, Laura, and James find themselves in a tangle with a magic wishing well! I would recommend Magic or Not to children of all ages. Reading this story is an adventure from beginning to end.

WhenI started this book it took a while to get through the fist couple of pages. This part didn't grab my intrest that well. As I went on through the book, it began to get more and more intresting to me. Magic Or Not is one of the great adventures written by Edward Eager.

Anemic sequel to the earlier and superior MAGIC OR NOT? The same children reappear, Kip, Lydia, Laura, Gordy in an upscale suburban neighborhood something like Scarsdale, NY or Greenwich, CT. Children love this book with its search for magical wishing wells, as well as trying to figure out Eager's clever puzzle--are the things that happen to them the result of their wishes, or is it all just a coincidence? Adults will like the spectacle of the different John Cheever-ish neighbors being lampooned in a variety of smirky ways. One added bonus is that, his character Madame Salvatini, the retired opera singer, reminisces of the days when she was young and she was just "plain Maggie Smith." This book was written well before Maggie Smith became an international star. "No one gave a hoot about me when I was plain Maggie Smith; but they drank champagne out of Madame Salvatini's slipper!"

Eager to Please, a new BDSM lite novel from Kim Corum. Here I am, take me, use me. Do whatever you like. When Kara, the wife of a wealthy businessman, is kidnapped, the last thing she expects is to feel sympathy for her captor. As her time in confinement extends, she finds herself involved sexually and playing games of submission and dominance. As each day passes, she slowly begins to fall in love and loses the homesickness she initially felt. Oddly enough, the only person she misses is her butler.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I wish it were longer!.......2006-02-11

I am probably biased towards this book, given the fact that the whole "falling in love with kidnapper" scenario has long been one of my personal favorite sexual fantasies! I was aware that this was the plot line before I purchased the book, so I was extremely excited to start reading it. And it definitely did not disappoint.

It's basically a love story, with some good old fashioned male dominance and female submission thrown in. Super hot. My favorite aspect of the book was how the two characters really cared for each other. The emotional involvement just made the sex all the more hot and intense.

Romantic bdsm has recently become one of my favorite genres, and I would say this one is at the very top of my list...even better than Breaking the Girl. I only hope Kim Corum writes more of this type. My only complaint is that this one isn't longer.

    Book Description

It's the end of the 21st century where technocrats rule and robots take care of humans’ every need. Your house watches you, knows your secrets, and talks to you. And your closest friend can be—a machine?

Gavin Bell and his teenage sister Fleur come from a middle-class family. Their much-loved, old-fashioned robot, Grumps, is running down and can’t be repaired, so a scientist friend loans them EGR3, an experimental new robot to help Grumps. EGR3, known as Eager, learns from his experiences, as a child would. He feels emotions—wonder, excitement, and loss. When the ultra high-tech, eerily human BDC4 robots begin to behave suspiciously, Eager and the Bells are drawn into a great adventure that is sometimes dark and often humorous. As Eager’s extraordinary abilities are tested to the limit, he will try to find the answer to this question: What does it mean to be alive?

Eager a new robot, developed by Professor Ogden, one of Gavin's friends. What Eager was made for, trying to find out what it means to be alive.

12-year old Gavin Bell and his father are taking the hover bus to Gavin's friend Professor Ogden's house. When they arrive Professor Odgen greets them. He takes them to his science lab and shows them his latest invention. Eager.

A few weeks later Fleur (Gavins sister) calls her friend Chike in Nigeria. He says LifeCorp's (a company that builds robots and other stuff) new line of robots; the BDC4's are locking people in their own home. Fleurs friend Marcia owns a BDC4. It has just locked her parents in her house! Fleur, Gavin, Eager and Marcia go to LifeCorps headquarters and find out what is wrong with the BDC4's while Eager finds out what it means to be alive.

Eager is a really great book. Be sure to read the sequel: Eagers Nephew!

4 out of 5 stars An eager review.......2006-10-17

The book is a very enjoyable book. The person the story is based off of is a robot named Eager. He is the most hi-tech robot that money can but. he has some amazing features. He is a robot of the future. His owner is a laid back kand'a person. I dislike how the book moves very slow. The author sould have revaled things faster. Other than that the book is great. It has a lot of adventure in it. The kids take a lot of risk. I deffinity reccomond this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book is addictive..........2006-07-31

I got this book to read aloud to my 9 year old son, but it was so great that I couldn't wait and read to the end of the book after he went to sleep! When I had finished reading it aloud to him we both wanted to read the next book "Eager's nephew" (which was equally addictive!)
The story is about a robot that has been designed to learn from his own experiences. He has emotions just the same as a human. He is a pretty funky design and my son and I had a great laugh about what he is able to do with his arms and legs.
The story is at times touching and other times thrilling.
Eager is sent to live with the Bell family partly for his own safety and partly as a learning experience.
There are some interesting elements such as how he tries to wash a baby when he has never done it or seen it done before, etc. You will have a good laugh.
Social issues of injustice and inequality are important elements for the story.
This is an excellent book in that not only is it a fascinating read but it is also a starting point for excellent discussions on a number of topics including: technology, equality, emotions, reality, family values, social issues, etc.
I could not recommend this book more highly. There are no slow parts in the story at all and it includes wonderful vocabulary that children are not often exposed to these days.
If you enjoy science fiction, you will love this book.

    3 out of 5 stars Getting there.......2006-05-25

I love stories set in the future, anything from Star Wars, to Alpha Squad. The problem is those are for teens to adults. Eager how ever is the first book I've read that's set in the future and is for kids. I'm a 14 year old so as you can probably imagine when I saw the cover of Eager with that weird rubbery face on it...I didn't want to read it, and I probably wouldn't have if it weren't for my teacher.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea here, it's a good book, except for some few corny lines like "euphoric" and unanswered question at the ending. But like I said I'm 14 this book is directed to 10 and 12 year olds, I didn't have a hard time reading it and it kind of bored me at some points, but it wasn't that bad. I kind of enjoyed reading the book. It had an interesting plot but hardly original, robbing ideas from too many books to count. The book also felt to feminine in my opinion, a lot of the characters in the book are female, which made all the suspense scenes under whelming,. Another problem here is that the book is short, for that last hundred pages it felt like every thing happened to fast.

If I had to give this book a score out of 10 I'd probably five it a 4, but hey don't take my word for it go pick your self up a copy of Eager at the library.

    4 out of 5 stars Eager Reading.......2006-05-17

Eager is a peculiar book taking place in the 21st century. Its unique style and way of making you laugh at the simplest things is one of the reasons why I chose Eager to read. I recall thinking I wouldn't like the book; how wrong I was!
The actual book is about a middle-class family in, as I have mentioned earlier, the 21st century. It is a time when technocrats, the wealthy people of that era, rule all, and LiveCorp, the company that makes all robots and technology, is prospering. No one ever thought something mysterious and hostile might be stirring up within the factory. Robots are, after all, programed to do only certain things. They are not programed to be curious or enthusiastic. That is, until Eager came along.
I will not bother you by spoiling the ending--even if I did, you probably wouldn't take my word for it. Order this book now, and perhaps you, like me, will discover that even a book from your least favorite genre can become one of your favorites.
