    Book Description

Come, come and hear of the strange and terrible tale of Miss Finch, an exacting woman befallen by mystery and abduction deep under the streets of London! New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman delivers another stunning hardcover graphic novel with longtime collaborator Michael Zulli (Creatures of the Night, The Sandman). This is the first comics adaptation of his popular story "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch," which saw print only in the U.K. edition of Gaiman's award-winning work Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fictions and Illusions and was recently interpreted for his Speaking in Tongues CD. The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch is a "mostly true story" that combines the author's trademark magic realism with Zulli's sumptuous paintings, and has been newly rewritten for this hardcover. Join a group of friends, with the stern Miss Finch in tow, as they enter musty caverns for a subterranean circus spectacle called "The Theatre of Night's Dreaming." Come inside, get out of the pounding rain, and witness this strange world of vampires, ringmasters, illusions and the Cabinet of Wishes Fulfill'd.

Everyone assumes that successful Boston Realtor Kaye Winslow has it all. Until the day she goes out to show an expensive new listing and vanishes into thin air, leaving behind her credit cards, her BlackBerry and an unidentified male corpse.

None of this makes sense—not to her husband, not to her business partner and not to the Boston P.D. But as the investigation ratchets up, homicide detectives Doug Policzki and Lorna Abrams discover the beautiful blond Realtor has an interesting dark side sh's kept carefully hidden.

Turns out a lot of people don't like Kaye, and many of them have a beef with her. But until the not-so-lovely Kaye Winslow is located, people close to her are just a little bit twitchy—because any one of them could be accused of murder.

    5 out of 5 stars Good!.......2007-05-22

The mystery was good and kept me guessing until the end. It's rare when I can't figure out what's happening, but Ms. Breton fooled me - good for her! There was romance in the story, but it wasn't over the top as with most Mira novels. I look forward to reading another of her books.

    4 out of 5 stars 4 stars.......2007-04-01

A high-powered, lady realtor whose star is on the rise disappears and a John Doe's body is found in the last place she was seen, along with her personal possessions. To the cops investigating, none of the scant clues add up in any way that makes sense. Where did she go? Who is the body? Where does her husband fit in? Complicating matters is the fact that one of the detectives finds himself attracted to the vanished woman's sister-in-law, jeopardizing their investigation with a conflict of interest. None of them could have foreseen how complicated everything would become though.

**** Ms. Breton without fail brings her readers intense character driven stories that draw you in from the outset and don't let you go. Her words paint a vivid portrait that comes alive, like a movie for the mind. You will not be able to guess the outcome of this mystery, no matter how clever you are. ****

    5 out of 5 stars action-packed police procedural .......2007-03-10

Boston realtor Kaye Winslow is meeting a potential buyer of the 6.5 million dollar Worthington House. However, when the client Philip Armentrout arrives he finds a male corpse and no Kaye. Police detectives Doug Policzi and Lorna Adams head the inquiry into the John Doe homicide and the missing realtor.

The cops interview Kaye's spouse Sam, a college professor up for tenure, and his sister Mia Delucca, Kaye's business partner. Soon evidence begins to appear that Sam may have killed Kaye, his second wife, but the detectives wonder why someone is going out of their way to hang him by sending them evidence that includes hints that he killed his first wife too.

POINT OF DEPARTURE is an action-packed police procedural with a series of mysteries such as who is the dead John Doe, where is Kate, why does she have no history prior to five years ago, and what is Sam hiding from his sister and the cops. No question that Sam is the prime suspect as he has no alibi and his rosy description of his marriage is destroyed by the divorce papers he receives. Only the doubts of Mia and the two cops especially Doug seeing a too perfect frame keep Sam from being arrested. Filled with twists and unexpected turns mystery fans will enjoy this strong thriller that keeps the romantic sublot in the background.

      Book Description

Student departure is a long-standing problem to colleges and universities. Approximately 45 percent of students enrolled in two-year colleges depart during their first year, and approximately one out of four students departs from a four-year college or university. The authors advance a serious revision of Tinto's popular interactionalist theory to account for student departure, and they postulate a theory of student departure in commuter colleges and universities.

This volume delves into the literature to describe exemplary campus-based programs designed to reduce student departure. It emphasizes the importance of addressing student departure through a multidisciplinary approach, engaging the whole campus. It proposes new models for nonresidential students and students from diverse backgrounds, and suggests directions for further research.

Academic and student affairs administrators seeking research-based approaches to understanding and reducing student departure will profit from reading this volume. Scholars of the college student experience will also find it valuable in defining new thrusts in research on the student departure process.

Egan succeeds in capturing the richness and beauty of the Pacific Northwest (and it's possibly imminent destruction) with rich description, appropriately chosen and reported interviews, and visits to exactly the places I would have chosen for such a book. From manicured gardens in essentially English Vancouver, B.C., to Indian reservations in western Washington, to the proud rural communities in eastern Washington, and visits to the precipitous peaks and brooding volcanos of the Cascade Mountains, Egan captures the presences and peoples of this region more effectively than most any other book I have encountered. Highly Recommended.

      Book Description

A fantastic book! Timothy Egan describes his journeys in the Pacific Northwest through visits to salmon fisheries, redwood forests and the manicured English gardens of Vancouver. Here is a blend of history, anthropology and politics.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Environmentally friendly essays about the wildlife, water, land and people of the Pacific Northwest.......2007-02-28

This collection of essays by Seattle native and New York Times journalist Timothy Egan is stuffed to the gills with facts about the wildlife, water and land in and around the Pacific Northwest. Each chapter begins with a map of the area under consideration, categorized by region and topic, including: a reclusive mountaineer's conquests in the Cascade Range, local volcanos, the wild waters around "We Ain't Quaint" Astoria, the history of Seattle, apple harvesting in the Yakima Valley, the Native American Puyallups, and logging in the Siskiyous of southwestern Oregon. Although with a preachy style that would make Rachel Carlson proud, Egan is a fantastic storyteller with the ability to meld anecdotes, facts and opinion in such a way that every chapter is absolutely engaging. The Good Rain contains an abundance of information about all things environmental, and is at least as useful and relevant today as it was in 1990 when it was first published. Of his three works of nonfiction, (the others being Breaking Blue, and the National Book Award winning Lasso the Wind), this is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous natural history of the Northwest.......2005-11-30

Mr. Egan is a superb writer. This collection of essays takes you through history and across the landscape of the NW. The chapter on Salmon stands with the best environmental eriting that I have encountered.

4 out of 5 stars Jenny's review of the Good Rain.......2004-12-01

I think that this was a great book to read, to grasp what the Pacific North West is all about. The parts that we need to be aware of and the parts that we are known for. I greatly enjoyed this book because it was easy to follow, and retain the facts from, and was enjoyable enough to keep you interest.

4 out of 5 stars Great story! not boring!.......2004-12-01

This book was a fun book to read. Unlike most history books, this actually told one man's story about his life growing up in the Pacific Northwest. He tells tales that he heard from his grandpa, and begins by finding the perfect place to lay his grandpa to rest in his home country of the Pacific Northwest. This book grabs your attention from the start, and it makes you want to keep reading because of the historical "stories", not historical information. I highly recommend this book to someone who does not necessarily enjoy reading large, history books, but they must enjoy fun stories about history.

3 out of 5 stars Thumbs up Thumbs down.......2004-12-01

Egan's tail does well to capture the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and inform his audience of some important issues. However, I found the layout of his book hard to follow and this made me want to put it down and stop reading. I also think that some of the chapters were overly long and repetitive.

The literature of bird watching is full of memoirs set in out-of-the-way, rural locales, but few are set in the heart of big cities such as New York, where Wall Street Journal ornithology columnist Marie Winn hangs her hat. In this delightful account, Winn tells of birding in Central Park with an unlikely band of fellow enthusiasts (including Mary Tyler Moore and Woody Allen). Among her objects of study were a pair of increasingly uncommon wood thrushes who set up their nest in the park's Ramble, treating city dwellers to their "penetrating, flutelike, heart-stoppingly beautiful song: Ee-oh-lee, ee-oh-loo-ee-lee, ee-lay-loo," and a pair of red-tail hawks who courted, mated, and produced offspring, thus quickening the spirits of Manhattanites. Both urbanites and those inclined to country matters will enjoy Winn's gracefully written story of observation and discovery.

        Book Description

        Updated Edition—Ten Years Later

The scene of this enchanting (and true) story is the Ramble, an unknown wilderness deep in the heart of New York's fabled Central Park. There an odd and amiable band of nature lovers devote themselves to observing and protecting the park's rich wildlife. When a pair of red-tailed hawks builds a nest atop a Fifth Avenue apartment house across the street from the model-boat pond, Marie Winn and her fellow "Regulars" are soon transformed into obsessed hawkwatchers. The hilarious and occasionally heartbreaking saga of Pale Male and his mate as they struggle to raise a family in their unprecedented nest site, and the affectionate portrait of the humans who fall under their spell will delight and inspire readers for years to come.

        5 out of 5 stars wonderful story.......2007-02-12

I live in Portland Oregon, and have large populations of birds in my back yard, so this was a fun read. Perhaps i will visit NYC someday, and i will bring my glasses! What a nice book!

5 out of 5 stars Birding in central Park.......2007-01-06

Although the star of this book is Pale Male, there are also wonderful stories of encounters with other birds. Marie Winn is a good writer and this is a very entertaining book for anyone interested in Pale Male or birding in Central Park.

3 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE RE-NAMED.......2006-11-10

I was hoping for a more in depth article on Pale Male. This book had a more general theme to it pertaining to all the birds/wildlife in the park. It was okay, I am glad I didn't buy it, a friend let me read hers. I absolutely love, and purchased after watching it, Pale Male, the video produced by Nature, narrated by Joane Woodward.

        5 out of 5 stars Repeated Enjoyment.......2005-11-10

Every year goes by and this simple tale becomes more treasured and heartwarming. I have given dozens of copies of this book to friends, birders and non interested alike. Everyone is grateful for the inspiration that this unusual piece of nature brings.

We watch eagles return to a nest along a stretch of the Llano River that falls in line with a highly traveled highway and the human reaction is just the same as the thousands of New Yorkers. Scores and scores of strangers with craned necks and binoculars in raised and ready position, standing in the back of their truck beds only to get a little closer to the marvel of the eagles on the the back side of our very own ranch and river.

From fall to spring each year my weekend exploration includes a trip to see the eagles and I am always thinking through whom else I could share Red Tails In Love with...it is not hard.

5 out of 5 stars Purchased this book in protest against Pale Male's eviction.......2004-12-16

As a New Yorker, I hadn't really paid much attention to Pale Male before this unfortunate state of affairs. There was something shockingly callous and arrogant in the way the board of 927 Fifth Avenue destroyed this magnificent bird's home. I hope the hawks will eventually get their nest back.

I would like to find out more about this star's history and family. My whole family is now crazy about him and Lola.

        Hail Pale Male!

It is only when their mother disappears, leaving word with each of her daughters that she will be out of the country, sisters Pagan, Prana, and Zhikr are shaken. A single parent, their mother has always been a stable, constant presence and each of them needs her now. Pagan's second pregnancy has turned into a harrowing nightmare. Prana is devastated when her long affair with a married man starts to fall apart. And Zeke has become--reluctantly-- the only sober caretaker for her soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's daughters.

In their mother's absence, the sisters piece together fragments of her past to realize what it might have cost her, a child of the sixties, to sacrifice her free-spirited ways in order to raise them in a comfortable Westchester town. In the face of difficulty--and without her mother's presence--each sister must reflect her mother's resolve and do what is necessary to preserve herself.

Definitely a "women's" book, but anyone who is a woman, who has been single, who has been married, who has sisters, a family, love relationships, parents or children, will relate to the lives and problems of these very realistic and believable women. I was wishing the book would never end. It may not be the greatest book, but it involves the reader deeply and is very affecting.

          Book Description

An exceptionally clear, communicative, and popular series, geared to the interests and needs of young adults and adults.

          3 out of 5 stars streamline`snotthebest.......2000-08-17

The book has a lot of useful info and many visuals to figure things out about the content. It manages itself through the cassette that accompanies it. What I don`t like about the book is that it becomes boring for young adults and many times for adults as well. Each unit has to be dealt by the instructor which has to adapt writing exercises, grammar or speaking `cause the book is too limited and bound to repetitions.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool for English conversation.......2000-08-07

I have been teaching English to Japanese for over a decade using the Streamline English series because it is entertaining and easy to both teach and learn from. The series is very well crafted, giving grammar in easily digested doses with a strong component of fun.

The audio cassette adds a lot to the course: breaking up lecture time, exposing students to others' speech patterns and pronunciation and giving an element of fun. Since I started with the British English series and have switched to the American series, my students and I enjoy comparing the differences in usage and even illustrative styles, since the pictures are very charming and often humorous.

This is a great series which I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Streamline as a teachers tool........2000-03-30

I've worked in Japan teaching English and this text was the only one used by the company I worked for. I found it to be very useful, and a good tool for teaching, but I think it wouldn't be any use to someone teaching themselves. But, in the right hands its a very useful way to pick up some of the finer points of English.
