Customer Reviews:
hauntingly beautiful.......2007-09-10
I particularly enjoyed descriptions of Helen/Jenny's excitement about being able to taste, smell and feel things such as a simple apple.
Some reviewers have described the book as light reading for adults. I am old and found the book very moving.
It does seem strange to me that books are classified as "teen" just because the characters are teenagers.
Actually, Helen and James are emotionally in their 20s, despite being in teen bodies. It is true that they are dealing with teen problems, but from an adult perspective. However, I think the book would be fine for anyone who has reached puberty and has had proper sex-ed.
Perhaps Jenny's born-again parents are something of a stereotype. Her father getting hot for her after he thinks she has had sex with a grown man seemed a bit gratuitous. But as long as there are millions of hypocritical fundamentalists (of various religions) spreading poison in the world, there need to be books that show the evil consequences of that behavior.
Intersting.....but.......2007-09-01
I got into this book and wasn't sure that I was going to make the effort to finish it--but I am not a quitter and I had to see it through to the end. I found that the writing was very unique and the language of the story was beautifully written. I am glad that I read the whole book and didn't give up, but I would not recommend this book to anyone I know especially a young adult. There is a lot of offensive language in it--over the top I think even for today's standards. The situations that the main characters find themselves in are very adult and very descriptive--almost too much for me and way too much for a young adult. I found the concept of the "Christian" family portrayed in this book to be unrealistic and badly stereotyped.
I cried at the end of this book and was glad I gave it a chance--but read it at your own risk.
Interesting "slant" .......2007-08-22
This was captivating with an interesting twist on the ghost / haunting concept.
I wasn't too fond of some of the characterizations, or the frank language - I think the same concepts may be carried off without being as obvious in some respects.
The novel did keep me turning the pages, though I thought the ending was rushed.
Slow start but a strong finish.......2007-08-20
This book started off slow. It took me a couple of chapters to understand what exactly was going on with the main character. Once I connected with the main character though I was intrested and the story had captivated me. I have never read a story like this with this type of plot or characters. It was refreshing and the story compelled me until the beautiful ending. I did not give this book 5 stars because of the time it took to hook me in- I almost stopped reading it, although I am very glad that I did not. The story is quite beautiful and I really enjoy the meaning I found hidden underneath the plot. This is a book that I feel has meaning on many levels. I would say a good age to read this story is in high school or older. You can tell an English teacher wrote the book with all of the many nods to great literature peppered through the book. I think if you are open minded and enjoy a good romantic ghost story this book will be a great read for you!
Great book, a winner in my eyes.......2007-08-10
I've read this book twice now and I can honestly say it made me cry both times. Laura Whitcomb's writing style pulled me in and I found myself finishing the book in a day (both times) People complain that it stereotypes Christianity but to me that is far from true (Christianity isn't even the POINT of the novel). But in regards to those comments, sure, it might be stereotypical, but there are both sides to the spectrum of Christianity- some families are definitely like the one in the novel. Back to the important stuff- I highly recommend this novel to anyone in need of a good read.

Good Buy.......2007-10-07
This book was received in the condition as described by the seller. I was completely satisfied with this purchase.
It's a great book! See also The Tao of Writing (by me).......2006-12-07
I've gone round and round trying to find a reasonably good text for a creative nonfiction course I'm teaching in the spring. Tell It Slant was sitting on my bookshelf, so I picked it up one day. It gets to the point, offers excellent, accessible advice, and allows me to teach writing. For a complete novice, it might be too little, but for an experienced writer and teacher, it's an excellent introduction to creative nonfiction. My sole complaint is that it's overpriced. I suspect that's a result of it's textbook classification, a pet-peeve of mine. Students shouldn't have to pay $40 for a paperback, or for any textbook for that matter.
Even so, that's not the authors' fault, and I highly recommend this book.

Nothing but an outline .......2006-09-15
I think the book touches on good stuff but I there's too much time referencing other people's works. Also, none of the information goes into detail; for example, the chapter on The Basics of Personal Reportage reads like an outline with the authors touching on key points and then moving on to different topic. The sections of the book are not even a page long. I just wish there were more writing help vs outline and trying to show their Knowledgeable by talking about other's work.
Worth Every Penny.......2006-04-08
I'm surprised I'm the first person to review this book! Having recently read a half-dozen other titles on the subject, I find myself coming back to this one again and again. If you want to start writing creative nonfiction RIGHT NOW, this is the book for you. It's extremely well-written and accessible.
Each chapter offers plenty of exercises for the individual writer and variations on the exercises for writing groups. All of the various forms of creative nonfiction are explained, as well as the challenges they entail.
The authors divide the book into three major parts focusing on "unearthing" the material, the forms of creative nonfiction, and "honing your craft." They discuss such topics as sentence rhythm, exposition versus scene, the pitfalls of "revenge prose," basics of good writing, mining your memory, and writing groups.
There is a very good bibliography and plenty of brief examples of other writers' work. In short, a wealth of information can be found between the covers of this slim 185-page book. Buy this book before you buy any other book on writing creative nonfiction.

Great New Quilt Design Technique.......1998-09-04
Marge Edie has done an outstanding job of teaching this technique so it can be understood by the beginner as well as the advanced quilter. Its a refreshing new idea. She gives encouragement to the beginner by revealing things like "my points don't always match". The gallery is an inspiration. You'll be surprised at how different the slant bargello looks from "regular bargello". The designs look complicated, but if you can rotary cut and sew a 1/4 inch seam with accuracy, you'll be amazed at the beautiful, one-of-a-kind creations you can turn out -- and best of all, when you are finished sewing, you are also finished quilting -- it's quilt as you go!

Thoughful book.......2005-10-21
On my recent jouney towards spiritual awareness I came across this book at a friend's house. I had heard about Mr. Hubband from time to time, the media has continuously bashed him so I thought I would give it a try. I found the precepts in the book thought provoking and have found them to be true. I think this is worth passing on to others to read. It may help you live a better life and find contentment.

Customer Reviews:
Simple yet very useful book.......2007-06-10
When of the first books I read when first starting to study Scientology. I still refer to it and use it 18 years later. Some basic ideas that can change your life!
ENjoy!
Fantastic Introduction.......2007-04-22
New Slant on Life will show you things that you can use today to better enjoy your life. I was especially impressed with the section "How to Live With Children" that helped me greatly in my relationship with my child. If you only ever read one Scientology book, I'd recommend this one.
I recommend this as a first introduction.......2005-07-25
For anyone interested in finding out what Scientology is all about, I recommend this book first. It isn't "about" Scientology - rather, it is a little piece of the kinds of things we learn in Scientology.
Composed of essays, it gives a look into how the mind works, what the relationship is between the mind, spirit, and body, a brief look at what our capabilities are as spiritual beings, and some applicable rules about life and livingness. You can study the material, apply it to your own life, and see how it works FOR YOU.
This is a great first book for anyone interested in the subject.
Scientology: a new slant on life.......2005-04-16
Out of all of L. Ron Hubbard's works, this is the most straight forward and interesting. This book makes it easy to understand Scientology and apply it to your life.
Personal Story.......2004-11-05
There was a chapter that changed my life and my idea on effort. The Chapter "Anatomy of Failure" explained that a person's downfall comes from things not happening the way they want. This was true for me. My life was a long chain of failures and I was miserable from failing. So, the change came with the advice to intend for life to keep on happening the way life keeps on happening--and a healthier way of living to try to change things for the better BUT not to be broken hearted when failure occurs. Hello! I thought I always had to be gung-ho and do or die and I was just killing myself because not everything goes my way. So I was stupid. I guess this is a confession, not a review. However, each chapter is a different subject and an excellent insight into the scope of the Scientology religion. Don't be scar'd! Books don't bite.

The hardest part of being a parent is the certain knowledge that there are some things you can't control. When Beth Kephart's son Jeremy was labeled with the unsettlingly vague diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder (a behavioral disorder related to autism) in the fall of 1991, there were no definitive medical answers, no guidebooks to Jeremy's inner world, no maps to help Jeremy's mom and dad lead their boy back into the land of relatively uncomplicated childhood. Jeremy was a beautiful child who screamed whenever strangers came near him and spent long hours every day obsessively rearranging his toy cars into indecipherable patterns. He was an early talker, but by the time of his diagnosis Jeremy's speech had degenerated into mindless parroting--a condition known as echolalia. Jeremy's triumph over his disability and his journey to reintegration is the primary story of this beautifully written book, Kephart's first.
The other story, the more universal story, is the haunting account of the symbiosis between mother and child, which grows particularly intense when a child feels pain from which his mother cannot shield him. Kephart's fears that her own maternal failings are somehow implicated in Jeremy's problem stand out as the emotional core of this memoir. Her faith in her son, perseverance, and eventual acceptance of herself play as important a role in his healing process as any course of therapy--and her unflinching descriptions of her own healing are what make A Slant of Sun such a stunning debut. --Patrizia DiLucchio
Book Description
Named a Best Book of the Year by Salon magazine and The Philadelphia Inquirer, A Slant of Sun was praised for its incandescent prose about the experience of loving a child who brings tremendous frustration and incalculable rewards and for its extraordinary resonance. Like Operating Instructions and The Liars' Club, A Slant of Sun is a contemporary classic.
Nearly one in five children grow up facing a developmental or behavioral challenge, and like them, Beth Kephart's son, Jeremy, showed early signs of being different: language eluded him, he preferred playing alone to an afternoon on the jungle gym. Doctors diagnosed Jeremy with a mild form of autism called Pervasive Developmental DisorderNot Otherwise Specified. A Slant of Sun is a passionate memoir about how Kephart, guided by the twin tools of intuition and imagination, helped lead her son toward wholeness. Pulsing with the questions, "Is normal possible? Definable?" A Slant of Sun speaks to everyonenot just parentsof the redemptive power of love.
Customer Reviews:
Lyrical writing style, some useful advice.......2005-09-21
The author writes in a highly personal, lyrical, and IMO
somewhat self-indulgent style. It's not my cup of tea, but
if there is a large audience for this form of writing, more
power to the author. I personally think that the most useful
message to come out of this book is "trust your instincts".
The primary inspiration is Beth's courage, amidst
the shock of dealing initially with the PDD-NOS conunudrum,
to tune out the noise, and chart Jeremy's course
herself based on her own instincts of what felt right
and what seemed to worked best for him. Having been in
a similar albeit less traumatic situation, I can't
convey how much courage it takes to jettison, or at
least cherry-pick among the advice of the experts. The
instinct to let the experts take over is very powerful
when you are searching for answers, and want to protect
your child from something unknown and frightening. But
when it comes to autism spectrum disorders, parental
instinct can often trump psychology.
A Self-Portrait of a Mother's Love.......2005-06-07
As beautifully as it is written, as much praise as it has received, and as interested as I am in the subject, A Slant of Sun was hard to pick up. For in opening these pages, I had to pry open a part of myself. The struggle was worthwhile, however, for the elegant prose of this book sheds light and hope upon the challenges faced by parents whose children receive the diagnosis of "Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified" as well as other invisible and elusive conditions that can affect the development of young children.
Beth Kephart immediately engages the reader as she takes you into her heart and mind. You get to know this quite ordinary, unassuming first-time mother as she struggles with the normal but uncomfortable worries of parenthood. The pages resonate with the devoted passion of a mother's love. Then comes that all too familiar, slow-dawning realization that her child's differences are beyond the range of the typical. As a parent of a child within the spectrum of PDD, I had no choice but to relive my son's early years and my own anguish in discovering that he would never be "normal."
As the author puts it, "What in the end are you fighting for? Is normal possible? Can it be defined?...And is normal superior to what the child inherently is, to what he aspires to, fights to, every second of his day?" Kephart refuses to confuse her only child with a label. She describes as only a fellow traveler can how she and her husband found therapists who "felt" right and held onto the ideas from doctors that made sense, like not letting their son get stuck in his rituals for too long. She talks about how hard it was as only a mother at home all day with her child can. As she put it, "It required more of me than I actually had to give, and at the end of it all, it was Jeremy himself who provided the light and the wisdom that moved us forward."
Jeremy is described today as a successful second grader in a country Quaker school. As a reader, I couldn't help but feel jealous for my own son has never made dramatic progress despite my hopes and dreams and efforts to the contrary. A Slant of Sun reopened that longing within me and led me to rethink my steps from my son Tariq's early years until now as he approaches his nineteenth birthday still functioning in the range of mental retardation. Still it was worth the effort, for the broad category of PDD has different implications for each child within the spectrum and for each parent who has to come to terms with the reality for their child. The combination of love and good programs can take each child as far as he or she can grow--but no further. Neither Beth Kephart nor any of us other parents have control over that.
We can hear Kephart's grief out loud in many of the essays which make up the book. While she observed her husband, on the other hand, to have grieved inside himself as most men do. Together they both did all they could while youth and innocence left this first-time mother. Like the rest of us struggling with disabilities in our children, they have been through years of having little life for themselves as they struggled to understand and meet their child's needs. First on their own, and then with therapists and teachers with the same approach, they learned to engage in Jeremy's world which helped him to enter theirs. They learned how to coach and pull him through his obsessions rather than yank him out of them and frustrate him. They made the world of relating appealing to their son.
PDD has multiple causes and numerous symptoms which appear in quite individual profiles in children who struggle simultaneously yet unevenly with language, motor skills, and social awareness. Love is the only reasonable response in the absence of a cure. It is a love without conditions for our special children regardless of how far they can or may develop. Our children teach us about the love and wonder of raising a child that escapes and transcends science and logic. A Slant of Sun lives up to its title and deserves to endure for it casts light on the arduous but rewarding journey of parenting a special child.

This is a great read.......2003-10-29
Unlike most books about autistic children written by their mothers, this mom doesn't offer the difinitive methodology for "recovery", no recipe for success. She tells the story of herself and her son to tell what she has found to be the greatest truth of the parent child relationship - love matters. You do your best, you love your child, you teach him/her what is important. So many parents of autistic children, particularly those with very young children, are so afraid of the future, they want answers. You will not find those answers here. This doesn't tell you what to do, but suggests that whatever path you take, be sure it is full of love. This is a lovely book, beautifully written, sweetly told.
beautiful insight, hopeful and profound.......2002-06-06
This book is a must read for parents of children finding their way back from the cloud of autism spectrum disorders. Beth Kephart paints a picture, not just of a heartbreaking condition but also of hope and joy in the midst of recovery. As the mother of a toddler battling the same mysterious condition I appreciated her acceptance and delight in her son. Beth Kephart put into words perfectly how parenting an autistic child can be so magical and thrilling and so sad and heartbreaking at the same time. Her refusal to let a diagnosis define her son is inspiring.
This is an excellent book to read as a companion to all the information books about autism and pdd. Her son is not 'cured' but he is back, loving and being loved.
Aside from the story itself Beth Kephart's use of words and language make the book worth reading, she writes beautifully.
A wonderful book.
one child's dignity.......2001-02-04
A Slant of Sun is a beautiful book written about a boy whose dignity and integrity teach his mother many things. This book is not an appropriate selection for parents who are seeking a plan of action or a series of steps to take toward a child's wholeness; the author makes it clear, repeatedly, that what worked well for her child is not necessarily a prescription for all children. Instead, A Slant of Sun is a book for those who believe it is important to step back, to spend time with their children, and to learn the lessons that they teach. It is a book for those who have been profoundly moved by their own child's first words, by unexpected gestures of love.

This uphill work is slow, indeed,
But down the slant-ah! note the speed!
Follow along on Bobby's adventurous ride when his cart is accidently set adrift.
Long before Richard Scarry or Dr. Seuss, an American artist delighted a generation of children and their parents with hilarious, topsy-turvy illustrations and slightly subversive tales told in rhyme. This was illustrator/author Peter Newell. Working over eighty years ago, Newell remains as profoundly enjoyable-and incredibly popular-as ever.

A childrens' book that you'll enjoy reading to them.......1999-04-10
This book dates from much earlier this century, both in the art-work and the language. The pictures are distinctive, and very nostalgic for those of us who read our grandparent's chilrdens' books while growing up. The language is challenging, every page containing words such as 'nettled' and 'perambulating'. One of our daughter's favorites, as well as mine.
One to read over and over.......1997-02-22
The crooked shape of this book gives a clue to what lies within. The Slant Book tells the tale of a boy whose stroller goes careening down a long hill, and the trouble he causes on the way down. The illustrations are great fun, and fill in the gaps where the words get difficult for small children. We've read The Slant Book over and over and never get tired of it. This book is a real pleaser for kids from 3 to 8
