4 out of 5 stars KEPT ME UP TOO LATE.......2007-08-12

I enjoyed this novel by Jackson. It is the sequel to Shiver and links many of her characters from previous books that you would not have had to read to enjoy this book. Mystery, thriller, and a bit of romance with nary a slow down. Great read.

3 out of 5 stars Implausable, repetitive, not as good as Shiver.......2007-08-11

This book suffers from some implausible connections and story lines. There are developments and scenes that are both repetitive to Shiver and to earlier in Absolute Fear itself. The introduction of new character Kristi is interesting. Shiver was more dense, more spell binding, not just because it started the story line, but because of better writing. Absolute Fear is worth reading in paperback, but probably from the library. I enjoyed it, but it's a long ways from Shiver in quality and even further from Elizabeth George or James Lee Burke.

3 out of 5 stars Just didn't work for me.......2007-08-03

"Cold-Blooded" and "Shiver", the previous two books in this series, were very good. This one, not so much.

Not enough info on:
*Eve's relationship with Cole before the shooting.
*What happened to Eve and Cole in the three months after the shooting.
*What really happened with Cole on the night of the shooting, because the few lines it was covered in were unclear.

Not enough development of the male and female leads. Ex: Did Eve work? If not how did she get her money?

As someone else pointed out why did Cole lose his house, car, job, money and possessions when he hadn't even been indicted yet? His attorney was a friend so he would have gotten a break on that fee and Cole was an attorney also so he would have been able to do a lot of the work on his own.

Now we have two women in the TSTL (too stupid to live), dumber than a box of rocks, don't have two brain cells to rub together category. Eve had found her friend brutally murdered with a tattoo carved into him, she'd been shot and almost died. Then her father was murdered in the same manner as her friend (also with a tattoo) and Eve has been targeted by the killer. Yet she went running around on her own, meeting a friend at a restaurant and then into a deserted insane asylum. TSTL

Kristi's dad is a cop and she's mad at him because he won't give her privileged details on a current investigation so she can write a true crime book. Kristi had been kidnapped, chained to a wall, and almost died because of the serial killer that had been after her. Yet there she is, a year or so later, wandering alone around the same insane asylum as Eve, not at the same time, taking pictures of the area where a nun had just been found also carved up and dead. TSTL

Other reviewers have brought up the fact that the insane asylum plot is getting really old and I agree; its way past time for it to go away.

Then there's the now dead priest who was taking advantage of women and fathering kids all over the place. This is just plain insulting! There have been cases of abuse by priests lately, but the vast majority of priests are good, spiritual people who believe in their calling. This part of the plot was particularly distasteful!

I realize New Orleans is not a huge city but it's not Mayberry so having all these people related to each other goes way past the bounds of being even slightly credible.

Fortunately I bought this book used!

1 out of 5 stars Adult Nancy Drew Thriller?.......2007-07-09

Far-fetched -- where in the world can you have detectives, girlfriends, daughters, killer, mental hospital inmates, be related to each other, with the ending surprising even the characters as to their relationship? Except for the hot and heavy spicing of sex episodes, this could be classified as another Nancy Drew novel.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Fear Review.......2007-06-13

Absolute Fear was the second book in the New Orleans series. The characters were familiar and I enjoyed them in this book. The new characters were very intriquing. The end really stunned me. I couldn't believe that Kristi saw her father's death in the near future.

Book Description

In cyberspace, no one can hear you scream.

Instead of preparing for her high school graduation, Lucy Kincaid is facing a vicious execution. Lured by an online predator, she’s destined to die horribly–live on the Internet–while hundreds of heartless viewers watch and vote on the method of her slaughter. Her family’s only hope rests with Kate Donovan, an FBI agent who took on the same sadistic killer once before . . . and lost. Blamed for another girl’s gruesome murder, Kate’s been fighting to clear her name. But she agrees to join the hunt for Lucy–and reluctantly steps back into her worst nightmare.

With time running out before the bloody webcast airs, Kate teams up with forensic psychiatrist Dillon Kincaid to get inside the head of her twisted quarry, zero in on his chamber of horrors, and reach Lucy before grim history repeats itself and another innocent’s brutal death goes hideously live.

Face the fear. Speak its name. See its face.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars deeped upsetting.......2007-10-07

Although this author writes a good story, I find the context of this novel too deeply unsettling to ever read another novel by this author. I found what happened to Lucy absolutely horrifying and was unable to put the story completely out of my mind and even had nightmares. I do read other novels about serial killers, but this was just too awful. I do not read books to have nightmares about them, so I just will not read anymore of her novels.

5 out of 5 stars SIX FOR SIX.......2007-08-22

I HAVE READ 6 OF ALLISON BRENNAN'S BOOKS. THE PREY, THE HUNT (MY FAVORITE OF THE THREE) AND THE KILL. WHAT MADE ME DECIDE TO GET INTO THE EVIL SERIES, WAS THE FACT NICK THOMAS (THE HUNT) WAS THE LEAD MALE IN THE FIRST BOOK, SPEAK NO EVIL. THOUGH I REALLY ENJOYED ALL THREE BOOKS OF THE EVIL SERIES, I WANTED MORE IN THE END ABOUT PATRICK. IS HE GOING TO WAKE UP FROM THE COMA AND HAVE HIS OWN STORY? AND WHAT ABOUT JACK'S STORY.WILL WE EVER LEARN THE WHATS AND WHYS OF HIS LIFE DURING THE ELEVEN YEARS HE HAS BEEN GONE FROM THE KINCAID FAMILY. DOES CARINA AND NICK TIE THE KNOT? DOES CONNOR AND JUILA'S STORY END WITH OUT AN ENDING? HOPEFULLY THE NEW BOOK DUE OUT IN EARLY 2008, WILL PICK UP ON THESE LOOSE ENDS, LIKE SPEAK NO EVIL DID FOR THE PREY , THE HUNT AND THE KILL. IT WAS, ALSO, GOOD TO SEE QUINN PETERSON WAS STILL KEEPING THINGS AT THE FBI RUNNING AND HAVING MARINDA TO HELP LUCY. I LIKE BOOK SERIES THAT LET YOU REVISIT OTHER CHARACTERS I HAVE READ ABOUT, SO I HOPE MS BRENNAN CONTINUES TO CONNECT HER'S IN FUTURE BOOKS. IF YOU ENJOY BOOKS THAT LET YOU REVISIT AND CONNECT, PLEASE CHECK OUT MARIAH STEWERT. SHE IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST,IF NOT THE BEST, AT WRITING NEW BOOKS THAT INCORPORATE CHARACTERS FROM HER OTHER BOOKS.

2 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2007-08-13

I don't know why this book disturbed me so much, but it did. Maybe it's because we'd gotten to know the Kincaid family over the past two books, and I was a bit surprised to see the brutality leveled at so many of them. Regardless though, it made me very disturbed.

This series was my first try with Allison Brennan. However, while the books were well-written, they were way too graphic and violent for my tastes. A good story can still be told without that level of violence, or such graphic storytelling.

I don't think I'll be checking out anything more of hers.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-08-13

I couldn't put this one down. I only wish i had read the other books before. I can't wait to go back and read more about the characters.

4 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2007-08-09

The clock is ticking and you can't wait to know the outcome! I definitely lost myself in this novel. It was difficult to put this one down...

    Amazon.com Reviews

Heralded as the "best book on the dope decade" by the New York Times Book Review, Hunter S. Thompson's documented drug orgy through Las Vegas would no doubt leave Nancy Reagan blushing and D.A.R.E. founders rethinking their motto. Under the pseudonym of Raoul Duke, Thompson travels with his Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo, in a souped-up convertible dubbed the "Great Red Shark." In its trunk, they stow "two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.... A quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls," which they manage to consume during their short tour.

On assignment from a sports magazine to cover "the fabulous Mint 400"--a free-for-all biker's race in the heart of the Nevada desert--the drug-a-delic duo stumbles through Vegas in hallucinatory hopes of finding the American dream (two truck-stop waitresses tell them it's nearby, but can't remember if it's on the right or the left). They of course never get the story, but they do commit the only sins in Vegas: "burning the locals, abusing the tourists, terrifying the help." For Thompson to remember and pen his experiences with such clarity and wit is nothing short of a miracle; an impressive feat no matter how one feels about the subject matter. A first-rate sensibility twinger, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a pop-culture classic, an icon of an era past, and a nugget of pure comedic genius. --Rebekah Warren

    Book Description

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page.  It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken.

Now this cult classic of gonzo journalism is a major motion picture from Universal, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro.  Opens everywhere on May 22, 1998.

To listen to its proponents, network (or multilevel) marketing is the greatest thing since sliced bread: top performers earn $1 million a month, reside in alluring places like Aspen and Kauai, and still find quality time to happily raise children and lovingly cement spousal relationships. Contending that those who fail to make it that far are ill prepared for the initial challenges they face, Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell--married network marketers who are among the industry's leaders, as well as members of a University of Illinois faculty that teaches the only college-certified course on the subject in the U.S.--have written Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams! to convey both advice and inspiration to newcomers. Peppered with personal anecdotes that bring their recommendations to life, the two offer logical strategies for overcoming rookie obstacles and kick starting a career. Individual chapters explore issues such as battling rejection, avoiding depression, handling prospects, supervising recruits, and managing time. Each concludes with a comprehensive summary, but save it for later reference and don't skip the preceding narrative, or you risk missing the book's considerable motivational component. --Howard Rothman

2 out of 5 stars Same old stuff, different cover............2007-09-16

There are many books like this out there with the methods are out of date. Most successful network marketers build their fortune on the backs of others. There are some new twists on old approaches, the problem with most network marketing, MLM, multilevel marketing methods is the company's business model drives the behavior in the field and turns people into pushy, aggressive sales people, which causes huge failure in the industry.

I only wish that I bought this book 18 months ago when I started with this wonderful MLM company I belong to. The insights of this industry are fully explained in this book along with stories that people in their organization have lived and learned through. Not only is the information useful and ready to be applied to your business but the inspiring stories are true examples that this industry works for those who work it. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in a MLM company and for anyone who is a veteran in MLM. 5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-06-11

I'm new to network marketing but not new to the law of attraction and motivational interviewing so when I read this book it was exciting for me to see how all three things could go together! It really helped me to view sales in a positive light and see how I can actually help others through network marketing. I've already used motivational interviewing as a nurse but never thought of how it could be applied in this way. The book is well written and easy to follow. Of course the stragtegies in the book need to be practiced, practiced, practiced before becomming second nature, but that's true of any new skill. I highly recommend this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide.......2007-05-24

This is the best book I've read on network marketing. It is a definite keeper and I have recommended this to people in my up and down-lines. Don't worry about approaching people. This gives you step by step guidelines and sample scripts, but most importantly shows you how to adapt them and make them your own. Nothing worse than canned words, you need to live and breathe what you market.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for a network marketer.......2007-05-14

If you want to be a successful network marketer, you know that you will need to ask enough questions to figure out if you can help your prospect or move on to the next. This book shows you how to ask questions naturally. Read this before you ever talk to one person about your business! It even helps in personal relationships! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars The Bridge Over Troubled Network Marketing Waters.......2007-02-20

If you are in network marketing, this book can only help you. What a great book. It is a book that makes sense. I bought this book and I had two very productive conversations immediately. People thanked me as opposed to "how fast can I get away from this salesperson?"
Something in me had changed because of this information and people were a whole lot more receptive to what I had to say - because for the first time I knew what to say - and when. My intentions all along have been good but sometimes the words got in the way in the past and halted communication.
No one can teach you what they have not done so if you need an mlm boost this is the route, I think this book should sell for about $1000.00, so get yours now!!!
Looking forward to going to the top in my company!!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars A Must Read.....................2007-01-09

If you have any involvement in Network Marketing this is a must read. It really gets into the essence of what Network Marketing should be about which is building relationships and helping people. This book gives you a step by step blueprint for putting the fun back into your network marketing business instead of working with with fear, anxiety and the loss of friendship. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to build their business in a way that will last.

    Book Description

    "If you really loved me..."

"After all I've done for you..."

"How can you be so selfish..."

Do any of the above sound familiar? They're all examples of emotional blackmail, a powerful form of manipulation in which people close to us threaten to punish us for not doing what they want. Emotional blackmailers know how much we value our relationships with them. They know our vulnerabilities and our deepest secrets. They are our mothers, our partners, our bosses and coworkers, our friends and our lovers. And no matter how much they care about us, they use this intimate knowledge to give themselves the payoff they want: our compliance.

Susan Forward knows what pushes our hot buttons. Just as John Gray illuminates the communications gap between the sexes in Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and Harriet Lerner describes an intricate dynamic in The Dance of Anger, so Susan Forward presents the anatomy of a relationship damaged by manipulation, and gives readers an arsenal of tools to fight back. In her clear, no-nonsense style, Forward provides powerful, practical strategies for blackmail targets, including checklists, practice scenarios and concrete communications techniques that will strengthen relationships and break the blackmail cycle for good.

5 out of 5 stars If you keep asking yourself, whadd'id I do? and walking on eggshells, this book is for YOU!.......2007-10-04

This book was recommended by a close friend who'd been listening to my "what happened?" tales of confusion and she recognized the syndrome instantly. "Emotional Blackmail". Just the title itself is helpful before the book even arrives at your door. Granted, it's very important to examine what part you may well be playing in this weird dance, however it's presenting itself in your life. BUT, you know, it just MIGHT NOT be about YOU!!! I do wish this book went further to include other relationships (such as the one pertinent to my dilemma with an adult step-son), however, it's so well done that you can extrapolate and employ various strategies to help straighten out your head and heart instead of going around miserable all the time wondering my personal mantra of "whadd'id I do?". And I'm a COUNSELOR! You know, you can be just too close to situations in your own life and this book will help you unravel some really common ones. Do yourself a favor. Take a deep breath, relax that knot in your stomach, and get this book. Then read it and get yourself FREE. Yow, it's a subtle thing to get tangled in!

    5 out of 5 stars Overwhelmingly Helpful!.......2007-07-19

I bought this book a few months ago. I read it in a single night. It was so amazing; it felt like I was reading about my life and my family members! This book helped me to identify the different types of control and manipulation people use and how to break free from the vicious cycle. I used this book along with "If you had controlling parents" by Dan Neuharth, to get out of the destructive and dysfunctional cycle that my family was in the middle of. I highly recomend both of these books! This particular book works for any controlling and manipulative relationship you might be in---there are lots of stories with examples form real people's lives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!.......2007-07-05

A great book, I would love to get in touch with the author to thank her for being part of my emotional healing after leaving an extremely abusive church. Does anybody know her email?
I felt like face to face with Susan, she was right there, present all along the way. Easy to read, easy to understand the principles of blackmailing and warm guiding through the healing process.
I recommend this book for any person who feels weak and frustrated when yielding to pressure. But please, don't read it quickly. Give it time to transform you, chew the information and take time for the exercises!People of the LieThe Road Less Travelled (Arrow New-Age)

    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-05-09

Very good book. Hit right on the money for what I've experienced in terms of emotional blackmail. Very useful. Just reinforced my decision to exit a relationship for the very reasons this book discusses; enduring persistent pressure from narcisistic partners trying to manipulate you into actions and behaviors for their own interests, with little regard for your own. If you even remotely identify with the title of this book, then it would be worthwhile to read it and then implement the corrective steps to get past the subtle blackmailers in your own life, and stop enabling them to press you into making poor personal decisions.

    A Michael Crichton Timeline
Amazon.com reveals a few facts about the "father of the techno-thriller."

1942: John Michael Crichton is born in Chicago, Illinois on Oct. 23.

1960: Crichton graduates from Roslyn High School on Long Island, New York, with high marks and a reputation as a star basketball player. He decides to attend Harvard University to study English. During his studies, he rankles under his writing professors' criticism. As an act of rebellion, Crichton submits an essay by George Orwell as his own. The professor doesn't catch the plagiarism and gives Orwell a B-. This experience convinces Crichton to change his field of study to anthropology.

1964: Crichton graduates summa cum laude from Harvard University in anthropology. After studying further as a visiting lecturer at Cambridge University and receiving the Henry Russell Shaw Travelling Fellowship, which allowed him to travel in Europe and North Africa, Crichton begins coursework at the Harvard School of Medicine. To help fund his medical endeavors, he writes spy thrillers under several pen names. One of these works, A Case of Need, wins the 1968 Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Allan Poe Award.

1969: Crichton graduates from Harvard Medical school and is accepted as a post-doctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Science in La Jolla, Calif. However, his career in medicine is waylaid by the publication of the first novel under his own name, The Andromeda Strain. The novel, about an apocalyptic plague, climbs high on bestseller lists and is later made into a popular film. Crichton said of his decision to pursue writing full time: "To quit medicine to become a writer struck most people like quitting the Supreme Court to become a bail bondsman."

1972: Crichton's second novel under his own name The Terminal Man, is published. Also, two of Crichton's previous works under his pen names, Dealing and A Case of Need are made into movies. After watching the filming, Crichton decides to try his hand at directing. He will eventually direct seven films including the 1973 science-fiction hit Westworld, which was the first film ever to use computer-generated effects.

1980: Crichton draws on his anthropology background and fascination with new technology to create Congo, a best-selling novel about a search for industrial diamonds and a new race of gorillas. The novel, patterned after the adventure writings of H. Ryder Haggard, updates the genre with the inclusion of high-tech gadgets that, although may seem quaint 20 years later, serve to set Crichton's work apart and he begins to cement his reputation as "the father of the techno-thriller."

1990: After the 1980s, which saw the publication of the underwater adventure Sphere (1987) and an invitation to become a visiting writer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1988), Crichton begins the new decade with a bang via the publication of his most popular novel, Jurassic Park. The book is a powerful example of Crichton's use of science and technology as the bedrock for his work. Heady discussion of genetic engineering, chaos theory, and paleontology run throughout the tightly-wound thriller that strands a crew of scientists on an island populated by cloned dinosaurs run amok. The novel inspires the 1993 Steven Spielberg film, and together book and film will re-ignite the world's fascination with dinosaurs.

1995: Crichton resurrects an idea from his medical school days to create the Emmy-Award Winning television series ER. In this year, ER won eight Emmys and Crichton received an award from the Producers Guild of America in the category of outstanding multi-episodic series. Set in an insanely busy an often dangerous Chicago emergency room, the fast-paced drama is defined by Crichton's now trademark use of technical expertise and insider jargon. The year also saw the publication of The Lost World returning readers to the dinosaur-infested island.

2000: In recognition for Crichton's contribution in popularizing paleontology, a dinosaur discovered in southern China is named after him. "Crichton's ankylosaur" is a small, armored plant-eating dinosaur that dates to the early Jurassic Period, about 180 million years ago. "For a person like me, this is much better than an Academy Award," Crichton said of the honor.

2004: Crichton's newest thriller State of Fear is published.

4 out of 5 stars An... interesting thriller.......2007-10-10

I'm somewhat accustomed to the classic Michael Crichton- the one that takes a somewhat farfetched thing and makes it somehow both plausible and exciting. You know, say... killer apes guarding diamonds in the Congo, or an American spacecraft from the future that flies through a blackhole and crashes in the Pacific. State of Fear, however, is something entirely different. This is something that, for all intents and purposes, could happen tomorrow.

The basic premise of the novel is that the modern environmentalist movement is based on faith rather than a science. In a sense, it is a religion with many adherents that will go to any length to push their (largely unfounded) opinions. This is true, and after reading this story, it IS rather frightening. Global warming is the point in question in State of Fear, but if you think about it, it could have been any number of things. Generally, the story follows the usual driving Crichton-style plot, and it definitely keeps your attention. The big difference in this one is that it's chock full of cited documentation and graphs, most of which go to illustrate that there is no hard scientific basis proving that humans are causing global warming.

It's hard to touch a topic like global warming and not come away scalded, but I believe Crichton has done a good job. Some people believe he's trying to make a point about global warming. Having read through his (or rather, his characters') arguments very carefully, I'm convinced he isn't- rather, he's driving home the point that you cannot just believe what politicians, environmentalists, and the average Joe say. These people are not scientists, and 99% of them have absolutely NO idea what they're talking about. If you don't believe this, go watch Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' which, coincidentally, is also on global warming. So many people think that movie is accurate (he even won an Oscar for it!) but if you do even a tiny bit of research and watch it with anything approaching a critical eye you'll see that the 'facts' presented in it are unsubstantiated, and it has no basis in real science.

What's really scary about State of Fear, to me at least, is how Crichton portrays the scientific community as being bullied into taking a particular (political) stance on issues. I don't know the extent to which this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least. After all, researchers do need funding, and if they come up with results that their benefactors don't like... This would indicate that science is being tainted by, essentially, a religion. That would a disaster far worse than anything global warming might produce.

5 out of 5 stars "Nobody knows that I'm wrong," said Crichton...........2007-10-02

...on the Charlie Rose show earlier this year (the video is on Crichton's official site). Nobody knows that the earth won't warm only 8/10ths of one degree Celsius, as Crichton predicts - no, he doesn't predict, he guesses. "We can't `assess' the future, nor can we `predict' it....We can only guess. An informed guess is just a guess." (from the Bibliography section of the novel).

It seems that many people don't get it - Crichton does not deny global warming. He believes the earth is getting warmer and that some of the warming (particularly the carbon dioxide increase) is due to human activity. I think a lot of people are upset just because he doesn't believe it's "catastrophic", he doesn't believe that entire populations switching to hybrid cars would save the world (and the world does not need to be saved!). He's not buying in to the popular consensus, and he proves that he doesn't need to. He's researched the matter like the brilliant scientist he is. Catastrophes are great for science fiction books and movies, such as Jurassic Park. State of Fear is also science fiction (the storyline), but its scientific facts are real and it's obvious that Crichton did a great deal of research. What other novelists use footnotes and have an immense bibliography section at the end of the book? His critics argue that he "picks and chooses" his data to support his "agenda." But who doesn't? Researchers do it, Al Gore does it, politicians do it, the media does it. And really, even when students write research papers in school, they have to pick and choose their data.

Crichton is very logical, so I still don't understand what's so controversial or "right-wing" about his major points:

-No one knows how much of the warming is natural
-No one knows how much of the warming is due to human activity
-No one can predict the future climate more than 10 days in advance

Crichton reminds us that current weather predictions are rarely made more than 10 days in advance, and even then they can be wrong. Computer models can't predict El Ninos correctly either - "and if you can't predict El Ninos, the predictive value of your model in other areas is suspect." Just like in court, if it is revealed that the defendant lied about something, how can the jury believe anything else he/she says?

The character of Ted Bradley embodies the current celeb/media obsession with halting global warming (an arrogant notion, according to Crichton, that mere humans can affect the complex atmosphere of an entire planet - more precisely, "a coupled non-linear chaotic system" which is impossible to predict). Bradley, along with other limousine liberals in the book, brag to each other about buying hybrid cars for their staff, but they are traveling in a private jet during this discussion ("Just by making this trip, they're generating more pollution per capita than most people on the planet will generate in a year."), and SUV limos are ready to meet them at the airport. I know some celebrities do practice what they preach, but the majority does not. It reminds me of that activist who set fire to a Hummer dealership's fleet a few years ago. Afterwards, she hopped on her private jet to travel somewhere. How inconsistent.

I've been a Crichton fan for about 13 years now, and I only read the book because he wrote it - global warming never interested me too much - however, I dislike SUVs and think they're wasteful and unnecessary for the most part, and I try to conserve energy, water, and gasoline. I wouldn't mind paying a carbon tax. And Crichton certainly isn't against conservation and carbon taxes either - he wants to improve our environment - he just doesn't define global warming as an emergency and doesn't think we should be spending so much money on this unpredictable theory as opposed to AIDS and other true emergencies. But anyway, I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would, particularly the parts in Antarctica (which is getting colder, by the way). And I respect Crichton even more as a writer because he dared to write this. After reading this book, I am thoroughly convinced that I don't need to worry about the ice sheets melting. The sky is not falling. But if it does, I doubt that humans could do anything about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-24

This book is great. It provides scientific data for global warming and thriller stories at the same time. While it would be too much go-ahead if you start to deny global warming just after reading this book, the best part of the book is the tension between truth, science, funding-dependent scientific presentation, NGOs, and big powers, media , i.e., the inter-play between all different interest-pursuing groups. Great work.

1 out of 5 stars Sacrifices for a misleading Message.......2007-09-24

This is a remarkably poorly written best seller. In his zeal for selling the reader on his message (that there is no good evidence for global warming), Crichton sacrifices his story telling skills. The main characters in this book are cartoons with only one purpose - to either express Crichton's views on global warming with complete confidence - or to listen to those views with growing awareness. And, they are such trashy cartoon characters! Is there suspense? Only if you think that the main cartoon characters are in danger of being killed by mere lightning bolts or bullets. Beyond the remarkably badly told story, the science itself is unfortunately misleading. But that would take more than a few lines to address in any detail.

3 out of 5 stars State of Fear.......2007-09-19

This was a very readable book. I loved the way that he built suspense. A lot of it however was pure ludicrosity. To imagine that any belevable humans, especially a run of the mill L.A. lawyer could have this many serial adventures and near death experiences all over the world, one after another, just stretches credibilty to the breaking point. Also this book is a diatribe against a host of forces that the author believes has caused our society to continually be fooled and manipulated onto believing in one crisis after another leaving us, as a culture, to be in a constant state of fear. He makes a very powerful arguement that the current flavor of the month in this regard is Global Warming /Climate Change. In this regard it does make you think. I can't help however, the feeling that he is making his point by manipulating his own set of facts while disregarding others , the very thing that he is accusing others of doing. I find the danger here is that people will take these"facts" and conclude that everything is okay. There are plenty of other reasons for people to curb their consumeristic ways. Let's all stop being less selfish. Let's think about what's good for our country. That's true patriotism.

I love Susan Jeffers! Her book Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway has helped me clarify what is important to me, who I want to be in the world, and the kind of life I want to live. Her works are so congruent with my own personal journey toward wholeness. I recommend that you read the book first. If it resonates with you, then you'll want her three Inner Talk CDs. I listen to Inner Talk for a Confident Day and Inner Talk for Peace of Mind almost every day. They help me achieve inward peace and remind me of what is truly important in my life. I could go on and on about her books and CDs. I recommend her works for anybody desiring joy, peace, love, and fulfillment in their life. She is practical, uplifting, empowering, and hugely encouraging. Be prepared, however, to put in to practice her very practical advice. The only way to benefit from her book is to commit to her suggestions. I have, and it has made a hugely positive impact on my life.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring .......2007-09-15

Ever since reading "Your money or your life" I have been on a quest to find similar mind shifting books and "Feel the fear and do it anyway" fits into that category.

It's funny how things come into your life by coincidence. In a casual chat to a friend one night about something totally unrelated, he mentioned how he taught a course based on the principles of this book, so I bought it. The book has answered many questions that I have had rattling around in my mind for a while.

My big fear was public speaking so I'm doing a toastmaster course now. I'm still fearful but at least I'm chipping away at the coal face to become more at ease with the task. I have been checking out toastmaster clubs of late and the other night the guests were given the opportunity to speak in table topics. In this situation I would normally say no because of fear but "Feel the fear and do it anyway" came to mind so I did. At the end of the night I was given another opportunity to speak which was great. I am slowly chipping away at my public speaking fears thanks to the book. I was chatting to a girl at the public speaking course and she has read the book and was there to overcome her public speaking fears as well.

What I am finding really helpful with these reviews is when people mention similar books that have given them inspiration. If you have any inspiring book then mention them please.

I ordered this book on the suggestion of a friend from Italy. I really haven't had time to get into it as yet, but from what I've read it is just exactly what I was interested in.

    4 out of 5 stars interesting information.......2007-08-25

This book was a pretty interesting read. However, I didn't try the techniques because everything it does pretty much is a bipass to what faith can do. Some people have it and some don't. But I had no problems with the delivery of the product or anything.

5 out of 5 stars It works most of the time........2007-08-06

This is a great book. I have found that the tapping technique is very effective with at least 90% of the people I have worked with. It will not work, however, on very negative people who are convinced they cannot be helped, those who are died in the wool skeptics who are determined to prove you wrong, people who are clinging to their illness because they are afraid of losing their disability pension or because their illness brings them sympathy and attention from their family and friends. Usually you can identify these people ahead of time and avoid working with them. There are cases where the reason for their illness is a spiritual possession. This will involve finding someone who knows how to work with that problem.

5 out of 5 stars Tapping the Healer Within is AMAZING!.......2007-07-17

This was the most amazing and helpful book I have ever read! I was so excited after the first time I used the proceedures correctly and it worked, that I had to do an anxiety treatment on myself so I could sleep. I couldn't stop my mind from thinking of the incredible possibilities of healing this therapy presented. I bought five more books for friends and family and will soon place another order. Do yourself a favor and order 10 the first time! I have successfully used the treatment to heal my seven year old of a terrible migraine. I also healed my daughter (12) of a severe needle phobia. I used it to heal another 12 year old of being in basements (where she sleeps). I treated another for deep emotional issues that were preventing him from focusing at work. I look forward to using this therapy more and learning more about it. I am presently reading the Amazon.com suggested book called "Evolving Thought Field Therapy" (Diepold...). It is equally amazing and takes this therapy one step further. It also doesn't require tapping, just touching. It is very detailed and included diagnostic instruction with charts. I highly recommend both books. If this one doesn't work for you, read the Evolving book to understand what more you can do to get this therapy to work for you. It REALLY WORKS! I think I have found my future vocation. I hope to train in this field now. Andrea

5 out of 5 stars Kay's Positive Review of Tapping the Healer Within.......2007-02-15

A friend had me read a page of this book. It so interested me that I checked it out of the library, read it, was highly intrigued by it and purchased four copies--one for myself, two for my adult children and one for the friend who first introduced the book to me.

"Tapping the Healer Within" is about removing "perterbations" by usuing thought field therapy (tft) and thus attaining serenity whereas before there was fear, anxieties, phobias, etc.

Currently I am using the techniques described in the book and have met with unusual success in the elimination of stress in connection with the recent death of my mother.

The author, Roger J. Callahan, Ph.D (for many years--20+) has written the book well, with plenty of success stories. He has ended the book with address contacts, etc. There are additional aids available for purchase and they are listed at the end of the book.

After talking with Dr. Callahan personally on the phone and working further with him, I have purchased three additional copies of the book and have given them to friends in hopes of helping them with the stresses of their lives. I highly recommend "Tapping the Healer Within".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book on the basics only.......2006-11-10

This book is excellent for the person who wants to understand the basics and is also a very good resource book. Once on the path of tapping, one goes on to other more elaborate formulaic books. Loved it for what it is.

Each hour, 75 women are raped in the United States, and every few seconds, a woman is beaten. Each day, 400 Americans suffer shooting injuries, and another 1,100 face criminals armed with guns. Author Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They may distrust the fear, or it may impel them to some action that saves their lives. A leading expert on predicting violent behavior, de Becker believes we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive. The book teaches how to identify the warning signals of a potential attacker and recommends strategies for dealing with the problem before it becomes life threatening. The case studies are gripping and suspenseful, and include tactics for dealing with similar situations.

People don't just "snap" and become violent, says de Becker, whose clients include federal government agencies, celebrities, police departments, and shelters for battered women. "There is a process as observable, and often as predictable, as water coming to a boil." Learning to predict violence is the cornerstone to preventing it. De Becker is a master of the psychology of violence, and his advice may save your life. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars This book was a "gift!".......2007-10-04

I've read this book three times now, and each time I read it I uncover more and more incredibly helpful advice and wisdom.

I think it's a mistake to focus on the author's alleged "anti-gun" bias - out of a 400+ page book, that's discussed for perhaps 5 or 6 pages, at most. I don't really think the author sounded "anti" gun at all, either - it seemed to me he was advocating caution rather than an outright ban on the use of guns for personal safety. Considering that most women don't have the time or financial resources to learn how to use and purchase a gun, who cares, anyway? The point seems irrelevant to me.

I frankly don't care whether or not his crime statistics can be backed up by research, either - what difference does it make to know exactly how many people were assaulted or murdered in a given year? One is too many, and if this book can help save one person from harm, or even death, what does it matter whether the person was one of 1,000 or one of 10,000?

Finally, someone mentioned that reading this book would cause people to become more fearful. For me, the opposite was true. I'd been having some trouble with an individual I tried "to let down easy." He just can't seem to let go, and I used to worry a lot about what was going on. I often felt afraid - afraid because I never knew when he might try to contact me again, afraid because I never knew what he might do next. I recently reread the book, though, and now, instead of worrying about the situation, I find that I can relax. I trust that my intuition will let me know if there's something that I really do need to be afraid of - and I now know I will be able to take action to protect myself accordingly.

I haven't felt this good in quite awhile, and I'm truly grateful to Gavin DeCker for this "gift" - the gift of the ability to live my life now without fear.

    4 out of 5 stars A Gift of Fear.......2007-10-01

This book was recommended by a presenter at a statewide safety conference in Missouri. I purchased and read the book. I believe that it will be very beneficial to our staff with regard to keeping their intuitive senses sharp. School violence is a topic of critical importance. Our district purchased enough copies to provide every staff person with their own copy. Mr. de Becker uses his experiences to tell us how to keep our senses sharp. I recently conducted a professional development session using his book as background information.

5 out of 5 stars Trust Your Instincts!.......2007-09-25

Gavin de Becker has written an excellent book on intuition and how it can help you stay safe. This is simply the best book on this topic. This book describes ways to listen to those small messages. The author uses numerous real incidents to illustrate the principles he discusses. If you are looking for a comprehensive self-defense book, this is not it, but if you are looking for a definitive study of intuition and how it can help keep you safe - then this is the book!!

    5 out of 5 stars Recommended reading.......2007-09-25

This book is 400 pages full of informations about you and how others perceive the world around you.

Good that the author goes deep into the issue, quoting also Robert Hare's precious work:

"The ability to act in spite of conscience or empathy is one characteristic associated with psychopaths. Robert D. Hare's insightful book 'Without Conscience' identifies several other features. Such people are: - Glib and superficial - Egocentric and grandiose - Lacking remorse or guilt - Deceitful and manipulative - Impulsive - In the need of excitement - Lacking responsibility - Emotionally shallow. Many errors in predicting behavior come from the belief that others will perceive things as we do. The psychopath described above will not."

And there are so many examples out there, from burglars to politicians and right into your TV set, every day.

1 out of 5 stars A Book for the Gullible and Fearful. .......2007-09-02

I am a law enforcement officer and have worked the streets in the Southern California area for almost 20 years. I read this book and would NOT recommend it to anyone. I have the 1997 edition and it was given to my by a friend to read and review.

First, the book promotes an anti-gun bias and the author wastes no time in alleged gun violence statistics he provides but interestingly never cites his sources to support them. Here's an example, "In the last two years alone, more Americans died from gunshot wounds than were killed during the entire Vietnam War."

De Becker never cited which last two years so I assumed it was the years 1995 and 1996. Per Wikipedia, 58,209 brave American soldiers were killed in the Vietnam War, 153,303 wounded and 1,948 missing. I checked FBI crime statistics under the combined category of murder/non-negligent manslaughter rates for the years of 1995 and 1996. In 1995, there were 21,665 murders and in 1996 there were 19,645 murders for a total of 41,310 well short of 58,209 soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.

He further compares United States crime rate to Japan's crime rate. A nation of over 260 million (1995 statistics) versus a nation of 126 million(1995 statistics)is not a fair comparison. Is Japan a safe country? Not really, as you are more likely to commit suicide in Japan. Japan's murder rate average 0.9 per 100,000, but its suicide rate is 20.3, for a combined rate of 21.1 per 100,000. The U.S. murder rate average 7.4 per 100,000, and the suicide rate is 12.0, for a combined total of 19.4 per 100,000. Thus, the combined murder and suicide rates in Japan and the U.S. are nearly equal even though firearms are virtually non-existent in Japan.

He then claims, "By this time tomorrow, 400 more Americans will suffer a shooting injury and another 1,100 will face a criminal with a gun as Kelly did. Within the hour, another 75 women will be raped as Kelly was."

I tried finding statistics for the above quote but could not find any data that supported his claim. What I did find was that Prof. Gary Kleck from the School of Criminology, Florida State University, discovered Americans use firearms to prevent crimes approximately 1 to 1.5 million times per year. These are the very cases De Becker ignored. Had De Becker considered these facts, he would have had to conclude a firearm in the home makes a family and a person safer.

Prof. Kleck also discovered that robbery victims who defended themselves with a gun suffered lower rates of injury than did those who resisted without a gun, or even those who did not resist at all and instead complied with the violent criminal's demands. In short, Prof. Kleck concluded the private ownership of firearms deters criminal behavior. (Source: "Crime Control Through the Private Use of Armed Force" by Gary Kleck

Here's another fabulous claim by De Becker." In (sad) fact, if a full jumbo jet crashed into a mountain killing everyone on board and that happened every month, month in and month out, the number of people killed still wouldn't equal the number of women murdered by their husbands and boyfriends each year.

Per Wikipedia, the Boeing 747 is commonly nicknamed the "Jumbo Jet and depending on layout can hold between 417 and 524 passengers. I did not include the flight crew. Let us do some math. 417 x 12=5004 and 524 x12=6288. Now according to De Becker 417 to 524 plus women are murdered each month by their intimates.

In 1996, approximately 1,800 murders in the US were attributed to intimates; nearly three out of four of these (1,326) had a female victim the rest were male victims! (Bureau of Justice Statistics) Now 1326 divided in 12 is 110.5. Not the 417 to 524 plus murders De Becker claims to occur monthly.

De Becker is alleged to be a security expert but I could not find anything on his training and experience as a 'security expert." What makes him a security expert? I found his bio on the Internet and it cites his awards but nothing on his background, training or expertise. I could only find that he now resides in Fiji with seven adopted children. I guess he's so scared that he left the United States. I would like to know how many hardened criminals the author has arrested, confronted or fought in his lifetime.

I was very disappointed that a highly regarded author and "security expert" distorted facts and failed miserably in citing any sources for his alleged facts in his book. What else did he distort in his book? He sets the reader up(especially women) to be in fear then offers his solution to the reader to rely on your "gift of fear" or your inner self or gut feelings. This book provides the reader with a false sense of security. If you want to protect yourself you better learn how to fight with and without a weapon.

In my opinion, this book is for the gullible and the fearful. It provides the reader with no alternative but to rely on the alleged gift of fear or intuition to protect you. Fear is not a gift and will get you killed. If you are in a state of fear, your body will shutdown and you will not be able to fight back. You should always know your surroundings and rely on common sense. You should also train your body and mind for physical combat. Seek out experts in firearms instruction and in the combat arts. Always fight back and never give up! Which martial art should you study? For the beginner, I would suggest the Israeli martial art of Krav Maga as it provides the student with a combat mindset.

Here's a true life story. In the early 1990's, I took a criminal report for a young female school teacher in which her former boyfriend threatened to kill her. She had obtained a restraining order against him but it did little to stop his ongoing verbal threats. Her boyfriend was arrested several times but was released within a few hours. This kept him away for a time but did not stop the verbal threats. She was very concerned that he was going to kill her and that nothing was going to stop him. She lived alone in a rural area and asked me if she should buy a handgun. I told her yes but only if she obtained firearms training. I introduced her to a fellow officer that worked weekends as a certified firearms instructor at a private range. She immediately received firearms training that weekend from that officer, purchased a handgun, and became very proficient with her handgun (women tend to be excellent shooters). About two months later, her boyfriend was back at her home armed with a knife, she grabbed her 9mm handgun and escaped through the rear door of her home. He broke into her home and went after her. He was about 50 yards away threatening to kill her when she took a defensive posture, pointed her handgun at him and told him to stop. He refused and ran towards her with the knife in his hand. In self defense, she fired about four shots at him and killed him. This was an unfortunate incident that the young lady had to go through but she used common sense and training to protect herself. She was not arrested and the local prosecutor determined that she acted in self-defense. She trained her body and mind for combat and it saved her life. I am glad that I had a very small part in saving that young lady's life. Remember: The Gift of FEAR=False Evidence Appears Real.

For those of us that believe in the Almighty God, here's a scripture to remember. "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.) 2 Timothy 1:7
