After the release of her bestselling title, Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem, and the Confidence Gap, Peggy Orenstein toured the country talking to groups of parents, teachers, and girls. It was after one of these teen town hall meetings that she decided to write about the crucible of postfeminist socialization at which today's women--not girls--find themselves: the reconciliation of motherhood and personal aspirations. It's a subject she's intimately familiar with. Orenstein began researching Flux when she was in her mid-30s and agonizing over whether to have a child: "I wanted the richness of motherhood in my life but worried over its costs. I could almost hear the traditionalist in me clucking, 'You can't have it all,' and it infuriated me. Why couldn't I? Why couldn't any of us?"

To help her answer these questions, she interviewed about 250 women between 1996 and 1999, and their varied responses serve as a kind of public consciousness-raising tool. She also interviewed their friends, lovers, and partners to get to the root of the expectations, joys, and frustrations of these women living in a "half-changed world." Though most of the women she interviewed come from similar backgrounds (college educated, white, middle class, and heterosexual), their combined experiences provide readers with plenty of different viewpoints to consider. A portrait of a generational Everywoman emerges from these snapshots in a way that furthers the stated purpose of the book: to inspire readers in "the search for a more satisfied life." -- J.R.

    Book Description

Peggy Orenstein’s bestselling Schoolgirls is the classic study of teenage girls and self-esteem. Now Orenstein uses the same interviewing and reporting skills to examine the lives of women in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

The advances of the women’s movement allow women to grow up with a sense of expanded possibilities. Yet traditional expectations have hardly changed. To discover how they are navigating this double burden personally and professionally, Orenstein interviewed hundreds of women and has blended their voices into a compelling narrative that gets deep inside their lives and choices. With unusual sensitivity, Orenstein offers insight and inspiration for every woman who is making important decisions of her own.

2 out of 5 stars Self-satisfied princesses wanting it all.......2007-09-26

A very self-indulgent look at a slice of the spoilt American female middle class who seem, in this book, to be completely out of touch with what real life is like for most women - those millions who struggle every day with low income, low self-esteem, exploitative employers, debts, disability etc. The book was an eye-opener in that respect in that these women in the book will be, or are by now, shapers of policies 'for the rest of us' - God help us.

4 out of 5 stars You Can't Have It All.......2004-12-01

This book is an insightful study of the issues and challenges faced by women at the turn of the 21st century. This important book, which should be read by both men and women, touches upon many spheres of a woman's life, including education, career, and family, the ways in which these spheres interconnect, and the choices that women must make in order to navigate through them. Without providing specific answers, the book poses many provocative questions that each woman should answer for herself and raises important issues that should be addressed by our society as a whole.

The book is based on the many conversations that its author, Peggy Orenstein, had conducted with a number of women over the course of a couple of years, as well as some of her deeply personal experiences. The book is divided into three parts, each focusing on a distinct period in a woman's life: "The Promise" (women in her twenties, still contemplating what their future will be like), "The Crunch" (women in their thirties, facing the realities and the choices of marriage, family, and career), and "Reconsiderations" (women in their forties and beyond, rediscovering themselves after the pressures of biological clocks and life decisions have subsided). The author illustrates how the different women choose to navigate the different stages of their lives. Each of the women has her unique perspectives and challenges; however, many common threads and patterns emerge that define their experiences.

Reading this book can be frustrating and enlightening at the same time. The frustration partially comes from acknowledging the issues faced by most women in our society. It also arises from the naïveté of many of the young women who expect to "have it all" without thinking about the inevitable tradeoffs. The enlightening part of the book is also its key takeaway: the fact that there is no single, one-size-fits-all answer, and that each of us needs to be more thoughtful and deliberate in making the important decisions that have an impact on the rest of our lives, and not just be blindly led by tradition and society's expectations.

The book also has its limitations. For one, it is focused rather narrowly on a specific type of woman: white-collar, highly educated, accomplished, career-minded. While this is not necessarily a drawback, it does limit the audience for whom this book is intended. Second, in providing us with examples, the author still shows primarily "traditional" families. It would have been truly enlightening, for example, to see a family where the husband makes significantly less than his wife and how he manages the choice to either continue working or stay home. Finally, I couldn't help but feel that some of the issues in the book are slightly over-dramatized. It leaves one with a rather unsettled feeling and not a lot of optimism for the future. While all of the issues in the book are absolutely true, when presented together they can be quite overwhelming and discomforting - but perhaps, this is precisely what the author intended.

In summary, I would recommend this book without hesitation to anyone (women and men) who is considering the choices concerning family and career, and especially to every young person about to embark on his or her life's journey.

5 out of 5 stars No Easy Answers.......2004-09-08

After the last year of telling all of my friends about Cathi Hanauer's The Bitch in the House, I'm now delighted to have discovered yet another provocative book (albeit a little late) about the current generation of women and the difficult choices we are making regarding work and family. What an emotional ride! I couldn't put it down.

Orenstein managed to touch upon all the contradictions that highly-educated career women face in this "postfeminist" moment without oversimplifying our decisionmaking. Like some of the other reviewers, I did recommend this book to my husband as it is a testament to the struggles we face. But if you are looking for easy answers, this isn't the book. If you are looking for a narrative that will give you some insight as to how other women are carving out lifestyles that, although less than perfect, are fulfilling and even joyful then this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provolking for both men and women.......2004-05-18

This is the kind of book that reassures and as well as makes you question your choices in life. The author tells her story clearly and consisely. At times I laughed outloud. There are so many things that she expresses that I have felt myself. Although this may appeal to women more than men, men should try it...in order to understand the women they know, and perhaps to connect with their daughters better.
Great read! I recommend it highly!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2004-03-11

Normally I don't like feminaz-type books, but a friend thought I might enjoy this one. I have to say it was a good effort and I found many of my own thoughts being echoed by many of the women. My only criticism is that it focused (perhaps inadvertently) on women of high socioeconomic class. Almost all were college educated and in high-paying positions. The dilemas of marriage and motherhood may seem magnified in this group of women, however it is not exclusive to them (I, myself am one). I am also African-American, however and would have liked to see more women from different ethnic backgrounds (many of of which are also college-educated, etc).

      Book Description

Camden Yards before Oriole Park... Pratt and Light before Harborplace... Howard Street bustling with well-dressed shoppers... The Jones Falls flowing freely to the harbor... Sometimes Baltimore's past is almost impossible to imagine; sometimes it's just across the street. Great buildings, beautiful bridges, wild landscapes, whole neighborhoods--all have been lost to neglect or new construction. But much of old Baltimore still stands, and much more is preserved in local archives, family albums, and fond memories.

In this revised and expanded edition of his popular book, Mark B. Miller puts Baltimore's past and present side-by-side, showing historic photographs of the city next to recent photographs taken from the same vantage point. The result is a wonderful record of Baltimore's past--and an engaging guide to the historic buildings and features that survive today. This new edition of Baltimore Transitions adds several new views of Falls Road and the Jones Falls valley and one of Broadway looking south from Baltimore Street in 1890.

      Book Description

While the basic operating principles of Helical Magnetic Flux Compression Generators are easy to understand, the details of their construction and performance limits have been described only in government reports, many of them classified. Conferences in the field of flux compression are also dominated by contributions from government (US and foreign) laboratories. And the government-sponsored research has usually been concerned with very large generators with explosive charges that require elaborate facilities and safety arrangements. This book emphasizes research into small generators (less than 500 grams of high explosives) and explains in detail the physical fundamentals, construction details, and parameter-variation effects related to them.

2 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.......2003-05-01

I read the other books in the Flinx series years ago and enjoyed them. This one was only fair-to-middlin'.

The characters seems wooden and two-dimensional. The plot line was predictable and didn't seem to have much content. The emotional communication portion was overdone and a fairly tedious. There just wasn't a lot there.

Perhaps it's just my tastes have changed...I'll have to go re-read Tar-Aiym and Mother Not to see...but this one just seemed a bit pro forma.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the most polished Flinx book.......2001-10-20

Finx in Flux is probably the most polished Flinx book. Clearly Foster learned a little more about writing between this one and the last (The End of the Matter). This is another direct sequel in which we find Flinx rescueing a beautiful gengineer (genetic engineer) who is under assault by eco-terrorists. The character development in Flinx in Flux is much richer than the other Flinx books, but what really set this one apart (for me) was the dramatic conclusion where Flinx learns of the existence of a great malevelolence, perhaps great enough to destroy the entire universe. Sadly, that is no delved into very deeply, instead leaving that open for another novel.

          5 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2000-02-20

I just finished re-reading the book again for the umpteenth time. As always it was a great read, I really enjoy the Flinx series in the common wealth. Flinx is such an interesting character to watch develop. Just a note as to the comments below that the author is not going to be writing any more Flinx novels, that is untrue. Another one will be out latter this year(2000), or early next (It is titled Reunion).

          5 out of 5 stars I liked Clarity.......1999-09-26

Flinx is 19 and about to fall in love. While on Alispan, releasing Pip's children he see's a beautiful woman washed up along a rivers edge. When she wakes up he finds out that her name is Clarity Held and a group of fanatic tree huggers are trying to distroy the business she works for. She is a gengeneer (genetic engineers) who makes plants and fungus, etc. into marketable things. Flinx decides to help Clarity, whom he has fallen in love with. Unfortuntly he tells her, as an explination of why he can't be with her, that he is an experiment from the Melioraire Society and has an unpridictable sixth sense. Clarity's boss finds out and kidnaps him and wishes to exploit his talent. Sadly enough Flinx and Clarity never truly get together. That really riled me. Finally I'd like to tell a previous reviewer that Foster is not cutting off the Pip and Flinx series, he still hasn't answered all the questions that keep his fans coming back. Eli@

          4 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite.......1999-05-01

It was a terrible disappointment to learn that Flinx in Flux was the last in the series. Such an abrupt-like ending! When I was a young teen, I read the Tar-Aiym Krang, then moved to For Love of Mother Not, then Flinx in Flux, then Bloodhype. I didn't follow the "chronological" order, but I loved the series anyway! There was something in me that identified with Flinx, he was a hero to me. Over the years, I read other books by Alan Dean Foster, also set in the same universe as the Flinx and Pip series: Cachalot, Voyage to the City of the Dead, etc. Each were wonderful books, but they were also my way of associating with the series even though it had ended.

Yet, I guess in a way, the series HAD TO end. Foster wrote of Flinx the young child in a loving, caring way... but also knew that Flinx could not be like that forever. Very likely, with this last book in the series, he deliberately propelled Flinx into the seriousness of adulthood to bring about a sense of closure.

I'll never forget that Pip loved salty snacks (she needed the NaCl to make that special corrosive poison), or that the "fish" in Oboweir could make Earth whales feel as tiny as goldfish, or that furry cuddly bearlike creatures on a cold, cold world could be such adorable prodigies...

          Book Description

Asymptote, an award-winning New York City-based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both cutting-edge architects and virtual-reality artists, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have designed and written the first book to document their 'real world' (as opposed to virtual) projects completed since 1995. It includes work as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for Knoll; and a centre for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in Soho, New York. Rashid and Couture's work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture - among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Asymptote presents a seamless trajectory of projects organized in a non-linear fashion and illustrated with installation photographs, collaged photographs, and computer-generated diagrams and environments. The projects are interspersed with descriptive text and the speculative writing that Asymptote is known for. Both partners combine architectural practice with teaching, Rashid at Columbia University and Couture at Columbia and Parsons School of Design.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars Prentious & Predictable.......2004-05-13

Don't be fooled by Rashid and Couture's slick graphics. Their oeuvre has more to do with the capabilities of computer graphics programs than it does with quality architectural spaces. And the writing is predicatable archi-speak blather carefully crafted to sound more important and serious than it is. Asymptote are one of the many anti-architecture, anti-humanist firms walking the hackneyed architectural walk these days. From the prentious table of contents to the predicatable collage graphics, this book is as commonplace as Starbucks, and offers about as much to urban design today. Give it a miss.

            Book Description

In his national bestseller Bowling Alone, Robert Putnam illuminated the decline of social capital in the US. Now, in Democracies in Flux, Putnam brings together a group of leading scholars who broaden his findings as they examine the state of social capital in eight advanced democracies around the world. The book is packed with many intriguing revelations. The contributors note, for instance, that waning participation in unions, churches, and political parties seems to be virtually universal, a troubling discovery as these forms of social capital are especially important for empowering less educated, less affluent portions of the population. Indeed, in general, the researchers found more social grouping among the affluent than among the working classes and they find evidence of a younger generation that is singularly uninterested in politics, distrustful both of politicians and of others, cynical about public affairs, and less inclined to participate in enduring social organizations. Yet social capital appears as strong as ever in Sweden, where 40% of the adult population participate in "study circles"--small groups who meet weekly for educational discussions. Social capital--good will, fellowship, sympathy, and social intercourse--is vitally important both for the health of our communities and for our own physical and psychological well being. Offering a panoramic look at social capital around the world, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of these phenomena and why they are important in today's world.

              Product Description

This is Volume III in the Anthology of Korean Studies. Korean anthropology holds a unique position in the field of anthropology, having first developed with native scholars studying native culture under the prevalent influence of cultural and social anthropology, rather than with the past western practice of studying the Other. Since the 1980s, several attempts have been made to examine Korean culture from different points of view, such as political economy and area studies. This trend is visible in the articles contributed to the Korea Journal over the past forty years. While the early articles focus mainly on Korean shamanism and folklore, the emphasis shifts in the latter half to more diverse subjects such as Koreans abroad and changes in Korean communities under the social, economic, and political influences of the modern times. This volume, Korean Anthropology: Contemporary Korean Culture in Flux, presents 30 original articles carefully selected from the Korea Journal covering all aspects of Korean culture seen through the distinct viewpoints of anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, geographers, architects, folklorists, and psychiatrists. The articles, chosen under the guidance of Professor Han Kyung-Koo, are arranged along five major themes. Articles in Part I discuss different ways of understanding Korean culture including traditional conceptualization and utilization of nature and living space, and representations abroad. Part II looks at the changes and continuities in Korean communities and beliefs under the social and political influences of modern Korea, ranging from Saemaeul Movement, religious conflicts, and marriage customs. Part III focuses on Korean women in "patriarchal" Korean society and the male-female relationship in contemporary Korea. Among featured subjects are women on Jeju-do island, female workers in multinational corporations, and family relations. Shamanistic rituals and fortunetelling, the main theme of Part IV, are still prevalent in Korea alongside modern medicine and cutting-edge technology despite the conflicts and confusion brought on by the rapid industrialization and westernization of Korean society. While some traditions have been discarded, other have been retained in a different or compromised form. This brings us to the final Part V which explores how various social relationships are formed and maintained within modern Korean society: men and women continue to rely on kinship and social ties to survive in a highly competitive and centralized society. Intended to be an introductory yet comprehensive collection of readings on Korean culture, we hope this volume will stimulate further debates and discussions on Korean culture and society.
