Book Description

Every year, thousands of undocumented migrants attempt to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, and every year, the Minutemen, a volunteer group of citizens who patrol the border, try to stop them. As the debate over immigration became increasingly fierce and polarized, three friends came up with an ingenious idea to both clarify and humanize the complexities of the issue.

For three months, Rudy Adler, Victoria Criado, and Brett Huneycutt distributed hundreds of disposable cameras, along with the means of returning them, to migrants and Minutemen so they could document their own journeys. The friends received over two thousand photographs that present both sides of the issue—and reveal the harsh realities on the ground. Capturing images from both sides of the border, Border Film Project tells the stories that no news piece, policy debate, or academic study could possibly convey.

BORDER FILM PROJECT: PHOTOS BY MIGRANT AND MINUTEMEN ON THE US-MEXICO BORDER could also have been featured in our 'arts' or 'social issues' sections, but is reviewed here for its outstanding documentary value. The authors distributed hundreds of disposable cameras, along with means of returning them, to migrants and Minutemen so they could document their own border and immigration experiences. BORDER FILM PROJECT gathers these images under one cover, pairs them with personal stories which go far beyond the usual news report, and accompanies a traveling exhibition. It's an outstanding documentary highly recommended for any collection strong in photography, social issues, and immigrant issues.

    Book Description

Labor unions in France and the U.S. opposed certain restrictionist immigration policy measures in the late twentieth century, whereas they had pressured for restrictionism in the early twentieth century. Leah Haus asks why unions changed coalitions. Haus argues that one needs to focus on the challenges of internationalization to explain this change. Many union leaders consider economic internationalization and/or the internationalization of human rights as undermining the effectiveness and/or desirability of certain restrictionist measures. At the same time, many union leaders see support for certain non-restrictionist measures as a way to facilitate organizing immigrants, which is an alternative strategy for improving wages and work conditions.

      Book Description

This new collection of empirical investigations shows how patterns of prostitution in today's world are radically changing. Western affluence, deepening poverty in many Third World villages, the cheapness of international travel, cultural shifts in attitudes to extra-marital sex, and the Internet are all making an impact. The volume includes personal testimony alongside its empirical information and sociological investigation. It stresses the importance of looking at all three sets of actors involved -- the prostitutes themselves, clients, and the pimps and international traffickers -- to provide an up-to-date portrait of prostitution today.

        Book Description

No longer just pocket money for American teens, wages paid by multinational fast-food chains are going to a new generation of order-takers, burger-flippers, and basket-fryers - newly arrived immigrants.

Hailing from China, the Caribbean, Latin America, and India, a colorful sea of faces has taken its place behind one of the most ubiquitous American business institutions - the fast-food counter. They have become a vital link between the growing service sector in our cities' ethnic enclaves and the multi-billion dollar global fast-food industry.

For four years, sociologist Jennifer Parker Talwar went behind the counter herself and listened to immigrant fast-food workers in New York City's ethnic communities. They talked about balancing their low-paying jobs and monotonous daily reality with keeping the faith that these very jobs could be the first step on the path to the American Dream. In this original and compelling work of ethnography, Talwar shows that contrary to those arguing that the fast-food industry only represents an increasing homogenization of the American workforce, fast-food chains in immigrant communities must and do adapt to their surroundings. Rather than focusing on how ethnic communities become relatively sealed off from the larger economy, Talwar explores the interplay between globalizing mainstream forces like fast-food chains and the immigrant communities of our largest and most diverse cities.

        Book Description

The U.S.-Mexico border is the busiest in the world, the longest and most dramatic meeting point of a rich and poor country, and the site of intense confrontation between law enforcement and law evasion. Border control has changed in recent years from a low-maintenance and politically marginal activity to an intensive campaign focusing on drugs and migrant labor. Yet the unprecedented buildup of border policing has taken place in an era otherwise defined by the opening of the border, most notably through NAFTA. This contrast creates a borderless economy with a barricaded border.

Peter Andreas argues that the sharp escalation in law enforcement provides a political mechanism for coping with the unintended consequences of past policy choices. Law enforcement is enthusiastically embraced as a remedy for the very problems state practices have helped to create. The high-profile display of force, Andreas emphasizes, has ultimately been less about deterring illegal crossings and more about re-crafting the image of the border and symbolically reaffirming the state's territorial authority.

Extending the analysis to the borders of the European Union, Andreas identifies different forms of law enforcement escalation that reflect distinct historical legacies and regional contexts. Andreas challenges the notion that borders are irrelevant in an age of globalization and stresses that, rather than eroding, some critical borders are being reinforced and remade.

What the heck is our Congress thinking of???? This book clearly lays out how easy it will be for terrorist to get us by easily crossing the border at will. Why is this still so??? If you like this book you should also read, "U.S. Customs, Badge of Dishonor" another narrative of our Government's border blunders.

        Book Description

This fascinating sequel both answers many of the questions raised by the first Andreasson Affair and presents some extraordinary new facts. Soon after the publication of The Andreasson Affair it became evident that the case was by no means closed. Mysterious unmarked helicopters shadowed Betty and her husband, Robert Luca, when they were at home and on vacation. Strange, apparently paranormal experiences plagued the newlywed couple.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating but problematic.......2002-09-04

This second book about the abduction experiences of Betty Andreasson Luca and her husband Bob Luca proves much more fascinating than the initial book. In a sense, this book is a prequel to its predecessor because it deals with alleged abductions experienced during Betty's childhood. What continues to set the Andreasson Affair apart from other abduction stories is the pervasive religious connotation placed by Betty on her experiences. Her story remains rather unique in this respect in the abduction literature in general. It is perhaps for this reason that her story is rarely mentioned by other researchers. One cannot say whether the events Betty recalls actually happened, although the bulk of evidence indicates that something indeed happened, and it remains virtually impossible to determine if her own feelings that the UFO occupants are angelic emissaries from God are correct or whether her own fundamentalist faith has worked its way into her mental processes as a way of making the unbelievable more acceptable and easier for her to deal with.

I am rather ambivalent when it comes to Andreasson's experiences, largely because this book betrays to me several weaknesses in the case. For example, the author only personally attended one hypnotic regression session described here, relying mainly on tapes and videos along with the information provided by his associate investigator. Distance accounts for his inability to attend the sessions, but it presents a problem to me. Most importantly, the hypnotist, while a learned behavioral psychologist, had no experience with the hypnosis of alien abductees; many times, I felt he did ask leading questions and sometimes raced ahead of his subject, leaving his own trail of information for her to follow. The absence of Fowler at the sessions left the hypnotist out on his own too often, and this accounted for most of the problems I have with the regression sessions.

Fowler also seems to be of two minds when making his points. He stresses the unique importance of this case of high strangeness, but he often rushes through other UFO materials to find anything at all that sounds similar to something Betty reported. He does attempt to place the Andreasson Affair in the context of abduction literature in general toward the end of the book, but he seems to go off on tangents that have little to do with the case at hand. He also cites sources that are questionable at best (such as an article from the Weekly World News tabloid). This does not mean the story is not true, of course. If Andreasson's revelations are accurate, this is an extraordinarily important case. For now, all of this information is greatly intriguing and invokes more questions than it answers, but there is just not enough evidence for the reader to come to a definite conclusion as to the truth of this matter.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book of it's genre!.......2002-02-19

I first read the Andreasson Affair, and the Andreasson Affair Phase Two about 20 years ago.
I have yet to read any 'abduction' books that even come close to the detail of Mr. Fowler's investigation.
The mix of religious overtones has always struck me as the most fascinating aspect of the story. I beleive this is one reason these books are not as well circulated or referenced in public libraries as others of this type. (At Least This Has Been My Experience when trying to locate them at my local library).
Still these books have stood the test of time through debunkers, sceptics, and the like who have yet to explain away this account.
Whether you believe in the possibility of alien abductions or not, these books make for very exciting reading.....and I for one "Want To Believe".

4 out of 5 stars So incredible it has to be true.......2001-05-01

Well the book says it all itself - within the very pages it asks whether this book is the result of drugs, hallucination, make-believe or just plane truth. How can such a complex story be invented by one mind and adhered to under such scrutiny? The story is just as incredible as Phase One and as such is a must for all UFOlogists. Still reeling from the incredible images conjured up, I can't wait to read Watchers (phase 3) and Watchers 2, followed by The Andreasson Legacy

4 out of 5 stars This was a OK book........1999-12-19

I enjoyed this book throughly because it represented a real life scenario I like to act out myself.

The other drivers were running away.

But the cars of Hammer Malone and Killer Brag bore down on Heller!

        He turned to face them.

Narrated by the killer who traveled 22 light years to seal the fate of Earth, AN ALIEN AFFAIR races non-stop from a deadly Long Island speedway to an extraterrestrial's secret base in Turkey, from a battle on the observation platform at the top of the Empire State Building to the pleasures in the basement appartment of hte sadistic Miss Pinch.

The aliens are here. A calico cat, a jar of mustard and a host of credit card companies may well determine the success of their mission.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The series is terrible.......2001-05-25

I thought after reading the first book in the series that this was going to be a pretty good series. The first L.Ron Hubbard book that I read was Battlefield Earth and I absolutely loved it, however this series took a terrible down fall after the first book. It just got stupid. There isn't anyone who is going to always defy the odds like Heller does. I didn't like that and I think the series won't hold my attention to read any more in the series.

        Sincerely, A very honest critic

5 out of 5 stars The aliens are here!.......2000-06-23

With this book the series takes a wild and creepy turn. Book 4 in the Mission Earth Dekology 'An Alien Affair' places the narrator Soltan Gris in the clutches of a sadistic Miss Pinch who uses a jar of mustard in a way that will make your skin crawl! There is a lot of deadly racing at a Long Island speedway, and a really explosive battle on the observation platform of the Empire State Building. This book is completely different from the previous books, as it shows yet another satirical look at a sordid part of our society. You will appreciate this book as you read on in the series, as it really shows what kind of bumbling character the narrator is, despite his vicious mean streak. The mission continues...

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story.......2000-06-02

I loved all of these stories. I could not stop once I started them. The pacing is great. The satire is great. Hubbard has a fantastic and witty sense of humor. These stories also really they get you thinking. Love them all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent regardless of what a silly man-hater might say........1999-11-08

This series is one of the best I have ever read the previous critic obviously doesn't understand the satirical irony of the story. This is a fictional work not real life as they seem to think.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but Still Plain Bad.......1999-11-03

'An Alien Affair' is entertaining enough, if you struggle through the mind-numbingly stupid lesbian plot-line (how many times does Hubbard want us to see Gris being tortured by lesbians? It happens 6 or 7 times). Luckily I kept reading, the book was so stupid until that point that I nearly gave it up. After that it was mildly interesting. Not on my top 10 list..in fact, though I don't have a list, I'll bet it's in the bottom 10 of all the books I've ever read. As to the reviewer from Columbus, OH who claims this book is realistic and great..get real. Obviously a Scientologist.

As numerous assassinations and a notoriously violent crime illustrate, Mexico is in the midst of a power struggle between the forces of corruption and organized crime--fueled principally by drug money--and those working to continue a transition to an electoral democracy. These problems, as Sebastian Rotella chronicles vividly in Twilight on the Line: Underworlds and Politics at the U.S.-Mexico Border, flow over into America as well. As a result of the success of the Drug Enforcement Agency in blocking drugs (mainly Colombian cocaine) from entering through Florida, drug lords began looking to the vulnerable U.S.-Mexican border as a route for their contraband, a shift that exacerbated not only the flow of drugs, but of illegal immigrants as well. To explain the broader problem, Rotella focuses on individuals working for justice in Mexico, explaining in great detail the difficulties men such as Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo and presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio encountered in working for change. Both men, along with countless others, were gunned down for daring to stand up to the crime bosses. As the Los Angeles Times bureau chief for Latin America, Rotella is well acquainted with the subject, deftly analyzing the social and political repercussions of the brutal drug trade in both countries. Though he offers no real solutions to the problems (of course, the same could be said of stymied Mexican officials), he does convey the desperate situation with compassion and honesty.

A terrific journalist, Sebastian Rotella was the LA Times guy in Mexico, now he's in South America. This is a great read for anyone who wonders what goes on at the border besides guards, people spilling over walls and American teens going to Tijuana to drink. He explores both sides of the fence and scratches the surface to find out what lies beneath.

        4 out of 5 stars Enthralling.......2001-04-08

This is a captivating book about the amazing underworld and life of the US/Mexico border between Tijuana and San Diego. Rotella did many in depth interviews and first-person research in writing this book. The reader can feel the desperation of those he met with and quotes frequently, several of whom have been killed in the past few years for their efforts to end corruption and drug trafficking in Mexico. For anyone not familiar with the corruption and assassination scandals to come out of Mexico in the past decade, this book will simply amaze you. For those who are more familiar with Mexico's political situation and how it relates to the U.S.'s southern border, and the people directly affected by immigration there, this book is still an informational, emotional account worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding and fascinating revelation of the border.......1999-12-03

From the first page, you will not be able to stop until the last one. Backed with a deep professional research, this story of real life is told in such an intelligent narrative style that it seems like a novel. Clever, entertaining, revealing and enjoyable. A must!

4 out of 5 stars Vivid prose, keen insight........1998-07-21

Vivid descriptions and compelling scenarios make this book such fascinating reading that it's disappointing to discover that "Twilight" focuses almost exclusively on Tijuana, while ignoring the other 1980 miles of the border. The description of the Colosio investigations get a bit tedious, but overall the book provides excellent reading on a timely topic.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful description of a Mexican narckingdom-Tijuana.......1998-06-23

Excellent book, illustrating the fusion of drugs, money, and politics. Comparing events in Tijuana with say, Juarez one can see similarities. Now citizens can read about what top U.S. policy makers have known and used to their advantage since the 80's. Mexico's govt. policy seeks to control and ensure that this largest source of dollars floating through its economy is protected. Mexico is ruled by roughly four kingdoms made up of: traffickers, PRIista, Zedillo's cabinet, military, fed, state and local officals--talk about overhead! These people all have the most to lose, especially the PRI. Thus, Clinton's efforts to provide military aid and advisors will only bolster the supression of the people of Mexico---its El Salvador with a little bit of Nicaragua, a dash of Guatemala and a smattering of Columbia. Now that the author has given us a slice of the micro, hopefully he will expand it into the macro.
