the challenge every man faces...the fight every man can win
From the television to the Internet, print media to videos, men are constantly faced with the assault of sensual images. It is impossible to avoid such temptations...but, thankfully, not impossible to rise above them.
Shattering the perception that men are unable to control their thought lives and roving eyes, Every Man's Battle shares the stories of dozens who have escaped the trap of sexual immorality and presents a practical, detailed plan for any man who desires sexual purity-perfect for men who have fallen in the past, those who want to remain strong today, and all who want to overcome temptation in the future.
Includes a special section for women, designed to help them understand and support the men they love.

Wow. I felt like these authors were looking into my soul........2007-09-23
Wow. I felt like these authors were looking into MY soul as they were writing. At times, it frightened me. It was amazing how well I could relate to what the authors were writing.
This book, which is written to Christian males, is all about winning the war on sexual temptation. It gives great advice on how a man can win this battle in as little as 6 weeks. It explored the natural tendencies of men and how our very maleness can lead us down the road of sexual impurity. The authors then turn the focus toward recognizing theses male tendencies and being "on guard" against them so that sexual purity can be obtained.
Some men have been quoted as saying, "It's natural for a male to look [at an attractive woman]." Is this [looking] stealing something that doesn't belong to you? The book answers this question. Also, if you want to be more captivated by your wife (and you may not think it's possible because you are already enamored by her), then I strongly encourage you to read this book.
I believe this book will enable you to win the battle on sexual temptation as well as strengthen your marriage (if you're married).
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I plan to read it multiple times.
Real.......2007-09-19
This book gives men an accurate perspective of lust. It provides reasons why lust is wrong by quoting scripture. It provides stories by the authors' personal lives to show that lust attacks all men and in a variety of ways. The book provides real ways to stop lusting. Finally, it provides expectations of the struggle.
This One Pulls No Punches.......2007-08-28
We're living in an age of unbridled sensuality and desire, when almost nothing is taboo, and ideas such as morality, purity, sanctity, and respect are considered highly subjective concepts. Though temptations of the flesh have always been with us - and always will be with us as long as we have the old sin nature inside - it has never before been harder for men and women alike to control their thoughts, minds, and dare I say it ....hormones.
The battle for purity of mind, thought, deed, and heart has escalated to a fever pitch, and countless of men and women alike have hurt others and been hurt by others in the areas of sexual purity. Television ads, billboards, magazine inserts - even in the once harmless Ladies Home Journal - promote life-styles and standards of living that open even the best person to thoughts and desires that, if left unchecked, can run roughshod over good intentions and the way we'd like to live.
Men, in particular, have suffered greatly in this area; and though it's not entirely their fault, the rising numbers of divorce and extramarital affairs inside the church - even among those who have served long and faithfully in the ministry - speak very loudly and clearly that something is wrong.
"Every Man's Battle", by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker, is one of the best devotionals targeting men and the battle for purity that I've come across in quite some time. It's practical, down-to-earth, and both authors "roll up their sleeves" and get right to the nitty-gritty details. It has a two-pronged approach: though it affirms men struggling with purity that they're not monsters, mentally ill, cursed, or alone in their fight; it also pulls no punches when it comes to their admonition to clean up their thought lives and behavior patterns.
"Every Man's Battle" also goes into great depth analyzing the male perspective and thought process - even going into biological detail as to why it's so hard for many men to keep pure - without succumbing to the age-old excuse, "boys will be boys". Much of what they discuss makes a tremendous amount of sense on a simple every day level, but at the same time they back everything with Scripture from God's Word.
It's very practical, and it doesn't just talk about the struggle for sexual purity and give enthusiastic exhortations and admonitions, it lays out and devises easy-to-implement action steps for any men to clean up their lives and obtain purity. In the battle for sexual purity, this isn't just a "Recon & Intel" report, it's a battle strategy aimed at one goal: to win, under the power and strength of God.
Finally, the best part about this book is the fact it's been written by two Christian men who have fought long and hard against the very beast troubling so many men. Other devotionals and books I've read about sexual purity and temptation have been on the ball and scripturally accurate, but they always read a little flat because you got the idea that though they were well researched and written, none of the authors really spent "time in the trenches". These guys have, and they aren't only recommending "good practices they've researched", but battle plans that saved their purity and marriages.
Great Book!.......2007-08-27

A Must Read for Every Christian Man.......2007-08-01
I just finished reading this book and found it very informative and enlightening. It is biblically based and a fun read. I believe it will help me both in my walk with Christ and in my relationships with my wife and family.
It's a MUST READ for any man who wants to grow spiritually with God. And when you finish, ask your wife to read it as well.

What does God have to say?.......2007-08-16
I have no idea what's up with the other reviewers. I agree that some of the other books in the Every Man's series are a bit over done, slightly jaded, and too explicit in some cases. HOWEVER, this is not the case with this book. Please go read the table of contents found above under the "search inside" link. The ENTIRE book covers those topics by providing PURE SCRIPTURE again and again and again. Besides the very few excerpts from Every Young Man's battle, the entire book is quite simply a collection of what God says on the subject. And THAT is more encouraging then any authors words could ever be. So instead of searching the Bible yourself, it's all summed up here. And then when you do your regular Bible reading, if you happen to come across one of the many verses in the book (which you will) a smile will come across your face as your knowledge of scripture gets deeper and deeper. This is espsecially useful for those who are just getting into the Bible (or want to get into the Bible).
If you're looking for a book that is more a book rather then a collection of awe inspiring scripture, Joshua Harris's book on sexual sin is great and non-explicit. Something more explicit but with some very valuable messages, specifically regarding the spiritual front of the battle, I reccomend Tactics by Fred Stoeker. Just be catious of it's explicity, and pay attention to reviews on all other books in the Every Man's series regarding sexual sin. I do agree that some ARE far too explicit. But as this battle guide is God talking to you, not the authors, get it!
Hate Yourself: For God's Sake..........2006-11-24
I thought Arterburn's book, "Every Man's Struggle" was a single book. I didn't know that it would give way to a whole raft of books, workbooks, CD's, tapes, sub-books, on and on. But I guess I'm not surprised that it happened, it makes the bucks and that's what it is all about for this author.
So, you are born and in time you realize you have certain feelings, God-given, human desires. But WAIT! Arterburn and Co. have a message for you because they have a pipeline direct to the Almighty. What gives them the authority to decide what is between one person and God? That is the most sacred relationship! Arterburn's message is, 'Don't think for yourself, listen to we, 'the chosen!' We KNOW what's right!' And with banners flying, and drums beating they march backwards through time proudly proclaiming: 'The earth was created in six days, Eve literally ate a bad apple, a snake talked to her, God made the sun stand still so a war could be fought' and on and on (Cue a southern preacher with a loud voice and a bad combover: GLOWRY HALLELUJAH!!) These "defenders of the faith" perpetrate their fundamentalism because people don't want to think. They want someone to lead them, pat their head, and tell them they are a good boy/girl.
Before you buy this book, consider a fact: Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Schlessinger, and others were the ones who yelled so loudly about immorality, were so self-righteous, judgemental, stern, and dogmatic. And yet? Yeah, you get the idea.
The irony isn't only inescapable, it's tragic because it is done in the name of God.
This book is incredible.......2006-04-03
for starters, i am 18 and still in high school. i have just as many sexual struggles as any other young man and this book is the best thing thats ever happened to me. its provided many hopeful messages about honoring God and women and ive found it to be more encouraging than the Bible (at least in the area of sexual temptation) it not only gives facts and statistics, but what women think and also real-life storries that have much more impact than the Bibles harsh preaching. it was an incredible book and i will continue reading it and encouraging others
Written by Sex Addicts for Sex Addicts.......2006-02-17
I was horrified to go through this workbook after a friend (a youth pastor) used it for a weekend retreat.
The first section teaches that all males "receive sexual gratification through three personal gates: the mind, the eyes, and the body"...and that "Satan works constantly to tempt us to yield to our lower nature by seeking such gratification through these gates."
So all sex and sexual thoughts are evil, and intimacy is achieved only through sex. So, it follows that men cannot be intimate except through sex, which is evil, so save it for your wife. Then this woman/relationship will magically fulfill every emotional and intimacy need you've ever had. Hmmm - doesn't this put a lot of stress on this relationship? And what do we do if/when this doesn't work? Blame her? Act out? Find someone else?
It goes on to explain how all males are inherently perverts, sex addicts, and these things were put into our bodies & minds by Satan. So not only are we born rapists, we have Satan living in our souls and there's nothing we can do about it.
What a sick, sick thing to tell a teenage boy. This is beyond F*cked up. How about doing something radical instead, maybe telling them the TRUTH? That this is learned behavior & part of social conditioning. That we are inundated with these messages from media, Hollywood, advertising...and that cultures who are not inundated with these messages have much fewer rapists and sex addicts.
The book is full of other B.S. like this. And another sexologist I read said that the authors, Aterburn and Stoeker, are sex addicts themselves. After reading the book it makes sense - they tend to define the world in terms of sex, sexuality, sexual orientation, sex objects, bodies & body parts. So, if you want your kids to turn out as sex addicts, it would make sense to give them a book written by sex addicts.
Or, if you're interested in accurate information about adolescence and sexuality, try:

-Escape from Intimacy, by Dr. Anne Wilson Schaef
-When Society Becomes an Addict, by Dr. Anne Wilson Schaef
A Valuable rewrite of an important message: Also, Saphire never gives a rating better than 1 star.......2006-01-14
While there is nothing particularly new in this version of Arterburn's message, it does provide practical and tactical ways for young men to avoid the plague of pornography and objectification of women. In this world awash with sexual images, young men need tools to remain pure and holy as they mature toward righteous manhood.
By the way, Saphire has never gives a rating above 1 star as of 1/13/2006. He/she appears to be a non-Christian and angry towards God and men. Take care in accepting that opinion.
Book Description
In the chaos of the interstellar communications blackout, the Capellan Chancellor has sent operative Mai Wa to help freedom fighter Evan Kurst liberate his homeworld. But Mai has betrayed Kurst before, and Evan's biggest problem is knowing who to trust in a world where today's ally is tomorrow's enemy.

Coleman's CapCon Craze Continues.......2006-05-11
Loren L. Coleman is, in my opinion, one of the best writers in the Battletech/Mechwarrior franchise, so after a number of weak entries in the Dark Age series (The Ruins of Power, the trilogy preceding this book), I was hoping Coleman could get things back on track. Sadly, he left me disappointed.
To begin with, I found the main characters of Mai Uhn Wa and Evan Kurst to be wholly unlikable, so I found myself not caring much at all about their quest for the independence of Liao, and actually rooting against them for the entire book. Kurst was especially bad, as his motivations for certain actions were rather confusing. For example, he openly hates the Betrayer of Liao, who brought about the Capellan attack on Liao that killed Evan's parents...but he joins a movement that encourages violence, and gladly welcomes another violent Capellan invasion. Odd. He also distances himself from his only friends for the majority of the book, so when Coleman tries (poorly) to humanize him near the end, it comes across as a bit too little, too late.
In fact, the only two likable characters I found in the book were Planetary Legate Viktor Ruskoff and Ritter Michaelson, but as they are non-Capellans in a Coleman book, I'm sure you can guess how well they fare. Michaelson seems wasted here, as I saw a hundred different (and more interesting!) ways the character could have been used in the Dark Age universe. Oh well, though.
And, since this a Coleman book...despite being Capellan, everyone's Chinese is absolutely terrible. While this will not bother anyone who doesn't speak the language, it really takes me out of the experience when Mai Uhn Wa uses "rong yi" for the "relax" meaning of the English word "easy". This is a mistake that not even a first-year student would make, Mr. Coleman.
Despite these problems, his writing in general is as good as ever. Scenes, battles, and characters are described well, and his technical knowledge of the Battletech universe is much more sound than some of the other writers in this series. The only minor issue I have tech-wise is that Kurst's Mech seems capable of doing everything and anything, all the time...but since Kurst is a Capellan Mechwarrior in a Coleman book, this is to be expected.
So, overall, an okay book.
Not great, and certainly not up to the standard that Ghost War set for the Dark Age universe, but it's better than the four books that preceded it.
By Temptations and By War (MechWarrior: Dark Age).......2004-07-13
I have read every book in the BattleTech, Mechwarrior, and the Dark Age Series. I not impressed with this book. The story line came out very slow. It can be compared to the very first book in the BattleTech Series: Cloak and Dagger. This book is written by one of my favorite BattleTech/Mechwarrior aurthors so I expected more out of this book. All in all I have not been impressed with this new Dark Age series. It does not seem to have the flare or sepense that the other series has. I can only hope that it gets better in the furture.
pretty good.......2004-06-07
the main character evan is what made me enjoy this book, he just seems very likable and i hope to see him impact later cappie novels, the battle at the end is a great climax and the author (coleman is my favorite behind the jade pheaonix author thurston) gives a great immersive description
Best of the Darkage setting.......2004-03-09
I'm a huge fan of the battletech novels and the mechwarrior games, but I've been relatively disappointed with the new novels in the Dark Age setting. I was particularly displeased with the Proving Grounds trilogy, which seemed to leave out the most important thing in a BT book.....interesting mechs!
Fortunately, By Temptations and By War does not suffer from this problem. While it fits in well in the Dark Age setting by not having regiments of Battlemechs stomping around, the author has still managed to put a decent number of mechs in (actual battlemechs, not agromechs). Even better, the author has included a couple of interesting Cappellan mech designs that I hadn't heard of before.
The storyline is also well written, and provides a perspective that few of the battletech books in the past have shown since it is told mostly from a Cappellan view point, and the Liaos aren't automatically painted as the (somewhat shallow) bad guys as they were in some earlier novels.
By Temptations and By War is definitely the best book that has been written in the Dark Age setting so far, and is one of the better books that Coleman has written. Even if you don't like the Dark Age timeline, I think I can recommend this book as a good read for battletech fans.
Good read!.......2004-01-12
As the Liao freedom fighter Evan Kurst bursts into the Mechwarrior storyline, it shows us more (key?) players in the battle for the Inner Sphere.
This book shows how cunning Daoshien Liao is, not even the likes of a business-savvy Jacob Bannson can match.
What I like most about this book is the epic showdown between Kurst and Michaelson: in their darkest hours, these two people rose to the occassion: Kurst gave it all for the freedom of Liao as Michaelson redeemed himself, for the last time. (it's pretty obvious who this Michaelson is)
Book Description
A few moments of illicit pleasure, a few dollars of illegal gain - what can it hurt? The aftermath of our pleasures and gains can wreak spiritual havoc when those indictments are bought at the cost of wrongdoing. In Winning the War Within, Dr. Stanley examines temptation from a biblical perspective and tracks its course from desire to sin to death. He clarifies the distinction between a test or a trial (which may come from God), and a temptation (which never comes from God) and explains God's solutions for coping with the trials and for triumphing over temptations.

Charles Stanley's Winning The War Within.......2007-05-14
Great Christian book by renown author, Charles Stanley. Great seller.
Great!.......2007-05-07
I was introduced to this book at a men's conference. Couldn't put the book down. Pastor Stanley has many interesting ways of looking at the trials we face. I wish I had the strength to get through them all!
You must have this book.......2005-12-11
Another reviewer said this book is valuable to anyone having problem with sin. One of the points this book makes evident is, that includes every human being. The book is not just about the traditional temptations of sex, alcohol, etc, but also losing your temper, being self sufficient, etc...I really believe this book can speak to anyone if read thoughtfully. It is an essential primer to any Christian wanting to know what sin and temptation are, how they originated, what forms they take, why it is important to battle, and how to accept the victory of Jesus Christ.
Another Great One by Dr. Stanley!.......2004-06-25
Once again, Dr. Stanley has written another excellent text, this one focusing on temptation.
Among the important points covered in the book include:
1. Reasons to take sin seriously.
2. God wants to develop our character.
3. Ways people shift blame for giving in to temptation.
4. God does not want us to live an anxiety-ridden life.
5. God will provide an escape route from temptation.
6. When faced with a situation, consider your past experiences, present state of mind, and future plans/goals/dreams.
7. The devil is often subtle.
8. Accountability is important in overcoming temptation.
Read and be encouraged to be strong in the Lord!
Hits the Mark.......2000-03-22
Charles Stanley accomplishes what he set out to do in this book. This is a very good tool if you are having problems with sin in your life. If you are human, chances are that you ARE having problems with sin. He gives you the tools and resources needed in overcoming sin. All you have to do is apply these biblical principles. Nothing exceptionally grand about the way he wrote the book. He gives some good illustrations, though. Mostly get-to-the-point information.
Book Description
Renowned for his compassionate and balanced thinking on international affairs, Stanley Hoffmann reflects here on the proper place of the United States in a world it has defined almost exclusively by 9/11, the war on terrorism, and the invasion of Iraq. A true global citizen, Hoffmann's analysis is uniquely informed by his place as a public intellectual with one foot in Europe, the other in America. In this brilliant essay, he considers point by point the events and actions that have led America down the path of imperialism, becoming a power at once arrogant, victorious, and unilateral. Tracing the significance of September 11 in the short term and over the long course of American history, Hoffmann explains the contradictions and the consequences for international order--and disorder.

Brilliant survey of current US foreign policy.......2005-07-30
Stanley Hoffmann, a Professor at Harvard University and the author of many books on international affairs, has written a very insightful book on current US foreign policy. He looks at the Franco-American dispute, the question of US imperialism, 9/11, the preparations for the attack on Iraq, the war and the subsequent occupation, and the future of the international system.
He writes that after 9/11, "the road selected by the United States was that of a declaration of `war' against terrorism, the creation of the notion of `illegal combatants', and the assimilation of states suspected of sheltering terrorists to the terrorists themselves. This was playing into their hands."
He suggests, "It is time to refocus the struggle against terrorism, by giving priority to the fight against Islamic jihadists (the most dangerous for U.S. and Western interests), and by spending far more energy on a permanent solution to the Palestinian problem, along the lines almost agreed upon at Taba in 2001 and advocated by the Geneva informal alliance of Palestinians and Israelis, as well as by Jimmy Carter."
He notes, "Nothing wholly good can come out of a war that resulted from a mix of self-deception and deliberate deception, waged in a part of the world in which alien control has for a long time fostered turmoil and tragedy. The presence of terrorism is not an invitation to empire, but an incentive for finding policies that reduce its appeal, and for pursuing the terrorists in ways that do not help them multiply. In the case of the Middle East, an exit from Iraq, combined with a new effort by the U.S., the U.N., the EU, and Russia to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and to create a livable Palestinian state, would mark a return to reality, to good sense, and to morality."
He concludes with some sensible proposals. He writes of Iraq, "There are good reasons for calling for the end of the occupation. As in Palestine, the occupation is the main cause of the current troubles (which does not mean that they will end if we leave; but whatever we do to try to resolve the internal conflicts is likely to backfire). Continuing U.S. military control, direct or indirect, will feed anti-Americanism (as in post-1965 South Vietnam) and provide a training and breeding ground for terrorism, native and from other countries. American interests would be better served by a shift of U.S. resources toward ... the fight against al Qaeda and its allies around the world - who have become more diversified and decentralized and continue to receive manpower and support from schools and factions in officially pro-American states such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan."
We do indeed need to focus on defeating Islamic jihadists. The barbaric bombing of Londoners on Thursday 7 July is to be utterly condemned, without qualification. The inhuman fascists who carried out, or connived in, these acts, wish to push us into a dark age of unreason and fear. They will try to blame their inhumanity on others. But terrorists are responsible for their crimes and we must hold them to account. There can be no excuses given. All of us must assist to unmask these mass murderers.
Book Description
Captain Hornblower, after two hard years on blockade at Brest, has relinquished the helm of the Hotspur. He has no ship, only the promise of one. Meanwhile there are battles to be fought.
This reading of HORNBLOWER DURING THE CRISIS includes two other stories, "Hornblower's Temptation" and "The Last Encounter," all published after C.S. Forester's death in 1966.
"Because Forester died before completing this novel, the reader is left with a summary sketch and his own imagination for final details of the plot. For Forester devotees, this will not detract from the essential verve and dash of Hornblower's last chase." (The Christian Science Monitor)
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Friendship .......2006-09-09
This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.
The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.
Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.
After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.
Would've been a good novel but the best part wasn't written........2004-03-01
This novel picks up with Hornblower relinquishing command of the Hotspur and returning to London for a new command. As typical in a Forester novel, nothing ever goes as planned and action follows Hornblower on his way home from a supply ship. There are only about 150 pages of text in this story and what was missing in the story were what Hornblower did that lead to the eventual decisive Battle of Trafalgar. It was nice to see what Forester wrote anyway only because I like the genre and I like Forester's details and descriptions of being in the Service and living during that time. But this book wouldn't be good on its own.
Cleaning up Forester's Desk.......2004-02-27
Hornblower During the Crisis is apparently a couple of pieces of left over script that Forester hadn't finished when he died, and was later published. The first half deals with Hornblower's trip home to England as a passenger on a water hoy (a supply ship that brings water to ships of the line). The water how is such a dog that after several days of beating back and forth they are still where they began. When they finally do get a fair wind they are chased by a larger French brig and only by some of Hornblower's usual trickery and bravado do they turn the tables and escape. The battle is a little too unbelievable for me; it relies too much no surprise and a sleeping French crew, which I found beyond the realm of possible. Nevertheless our hero returns safely to England.
The second part of the book is another short story about how Hornblower was assigned to be some kind of spy in Spain to deliver fake messages ordering the Spanish fleet out to sea. It's more plausible, but a short story.
Despite its shortcomings, the detail of ships and sailing in the early 19th century make the Hornblower series must reading for any man who loves the sea.
good, but unfinished leaves you wanting more.......2004-02-06
like most of the reviews the book is unfinished, which I thought was unfortunate. i really love reading about HH. i find his thoughts and thought process intriguing and his outlook on others who are involved in his life. CS Forester really gives you a feel for this charactor and puts you in his mind.
"Hornblower During the Crisis" is only 117 pages. i enjoyed it and have read all of the novels up threw "Crisis". im reading in chronological order. so i was dissapointed for it to end so quick. it is your typical HH novel, he starts out sailing and then the frogs show up, HH comes up with an idea and ofcoures it works out for the better. ends up in england with some important papers from boney. he gets promoted to captain only if he goes on a spy mission he came up with, that is where the book ends. a shame, i really wanted to see HH as a spy.
"Hornblowers Temptation" - is the first short story. it comes after "Midshipmen Hornblower" although one review said it came after "Lieutentant Hornblower", the reason is because Mr.Bush is not on board and captian sawyer is still alive. good short story, i agree with some reviews that the character is not like the HH we know. he does things for his own conscious , and not for king, for county. also this mentions that they have gone to the west indies, but in "Lieutentaunt HH", he remarks to Bush how he has never seen some sort of fish which are only in the west indies. good short story, if u like HH series then you will like this, although we are not use to this softer side of Horry.
"The Last Encounter" - this makes no sense with the HH books. his wifes is named Barbara, who he loves and can't keep his eyes off of, his only child is named Richard and he likes wine or "port" as they call it. never the less is was an ok read. i think forester wrote this just for fun. the story is about a man who comes to the door and says he someone famous and dead. HH is like whatever, but helps him anyway. not bad, i didn't really like it because it didn't hold true to Maria and his 2 kids.
this is a decent book, i wish it was finished, it really leaves you dangling. the only regret is the price $15, which are the prices for completed books. we should pay half this since we are getting half a story.
The last book in the series..........2004-01-06
Or is it? The incomplete story, 'Hornblower During The Crisis' seems to be set just after 'Hornblower And The Hotspur'. The story was never finished and the ONE page of notes at the end DO tell you how the story turns out but doesn't have much in the way of details. It would of been nice to see a dozen pages or so of the author's notes.
The next two stories, 'Hornblower's Temptation'(which seems to be set after 'Lieutenant Hornblower') and 'The Last Encounter', which is the very last tale about him, are both short but complete. They show us a very interesting view of Hornblower's inner thought process when he was young and when he gets old.
So in a way it does end the series, but also shows him during earlier periods of his life.

That Vision Thing .......2005-02-07
This book covers the first Bush administration and the foreign policy decisions they took around the end of the cold war and the Gulf war. The book covers the authors views as to what the U.S. should and should not do as far as aggression across the globe. I must say that I found this book more interesting reading it now, after the second Bush's first term and the Iraqi war. There were so many parallels in what the authors are concerned about and what has taken place over the past four years that one would have thought the book was written in 2004 and not 1992. Basically, the authors felt that the fist Bush administration was too eager to send the military off to do the job that the diplomats should have been doing. An interesting view given that most people view the first President Bush as one of the stronger Presidents in the area of Foreign Policy and diplomacy that we have had over the past few decade's.
Given the climate today the authors took some rather interesting positions that today would be met with a mixture of contempt and adoration from both sides of the political isle. They are dead set against preemptive war and want the U.S. to fall back to more of a isolationist position, at least in regard to military action. They argue that this is keeping with what the countries founding fathers would have done. They also think the UN should be the body used to work through these type of international disputes. But in a fit or either hard edged pragmatism or just plain ruthlessness, the authors argue that once we were engaged in the Gulf war the only logical outcome was to go all the way to Baghdad and oust Saddam.
Overall the book is interesting and presents its arguments is a well thought out and calm if not cautious way. This is not one of the many over dramatic, shout at each other type of political book that is so common today. These two authors are college professors and reading the book you did get the feeling of a senior level class room lecture. This is my one complaint, the book was written far to dry to gain wide acceptance among general readers. Unless you are truly interested in the topic, I would assume the general reader would put the book down after the first chapter thinking it was too dense.
American Empire?.......2000-11-19
Tucker and Hendrickson effectively communicate a criticism of American foreign policy during the Bush Administration. The book is interesting, readable and appropriate for any political science student interested in American foreign policy after the cold war. The arguments are well presented for the most part, but some are problematic. For example, the authors contend that NATO was established as a collective security stating that "NATO, however, was a pure application of collective security: `It is directed against no one; it is directed solely against aggression.'"(65) While the statement in and of itself may have occurred in practice, the organization itself was designed to combat the spread of Communism, not aggression. In The Imperial Temptation, the authors evaluate the foreign policy of an administration based on a single event: the gulf war. Although this event may be characteristic of the administration, not enough evidence is presented to support that assertion. The Imperial Temptation is a valuable book for the curious and/or critical political science student interested in varying views regarding post-cold war American foreign policy, or simply the gulf war itself. It is an interesting book, and a fairly easy reader on American foreign policy after the cold war.

Help for Young Men Seeking Honest Answers.......2000-10-16
This book is so effective because it teaches us how to honestly evaluate our thoughts and behavior. It inspires us to want to change for our own happiness and for the sake of others, without self-condemnation. Tackling destructive thoughts and behavior becomes exciting work. It teaches us how to look to a higher power to do this. Because of the universal truths involved in spiritual battle as described by Grant Schnarr, we can use the book and still feel true to our personal religious faiths. It also will greatly appeal to readers for whom traditional religions haven't worked. Anyone who feels something is missing in their life, who feels disconnected from others by depression, anxiety, or boredom or who needs a fresh approach to personal growth will love this book. I see it as especially useful for young men because it engages the masculine mind to do spiritual battle in a way that inspires the best that is within them. This, in turn, brings a sense of connectedness to other people, fulfillment and a sense of peace. It can be very effective for everyone, but I think this book is ground breaking for men who have been looking for the right approach--creative and active--to personal growth.

A Guide to Inner Peace based on Sun Tzu's Art of War? Well think about it--this is a world of paradoxes. What is the biggest obstacle to achieving inner peace? Perhaps it is our own self. What if we waged a war against our inner negativity, our doubts and our fears? Could we use the optimal book on war to conquer our inner demons and establish a beachhead for a state of personal bliss? This book gives detailed advice on how to view your internal dialogues as potential enemies and allies and finding peace. Remaining always aware and alert to how we think and believe is great advice. The book realigned how I view my personal commitment to self improvement.

It Pretty Well Enlists Everyone to the Battle.......2000-09-13
I've read a lot of spiritual warfare books, and also Eastern warrior philosophy. What is different about this book is that it draws from all sides of the issue. The Eastern discipline is here, and the best of Sun Tzu, Lao Tzu, Buddha, and the others, but you can definitely see Schnarr's Christian leanings about the battle against the "dark forces" and about the conflict between devils and angels. What this does is instead of alienating one side or the other, the book appeals to the best in all. Whether it's the Holy War of Islam, the conquering of self of Eastern philosophy, or the bold fight against the forces of evil in Judeo-Christian terms, it's all there, and all are called to battle. I also like that the battle starts with the individual, and is not some sort of call to change the world and forget about your own problems. He says if you want to change the world, begin with yourself. It's the best book on spiritual warfare I have ever read.
Physical Warfare as a Guide for Spiritual Gains.......2000-09-08
Grant Schnarr is someone who has experienced addictions and has had many spiritual battles of his own. He is now a Swedenborgian minister, and uses the lessons of his spiritual battles to help his readers understand ways to make more spiritual progress. In The Art of Spiritual Warfare, he draws on 13 selected readings from Sun Tzu's, The Art of War (often a source for thinking about business strategy), as the base for pursuing our own spiritual journeys. Candor about his own life and thoughts make this book more appealing and useful.
If you are not familiar with Sun Tzu, he was a profound thinker about the strategy of warfare who lived in China about 2,000 years ago. He is best known for the book that is the basis of this one. That description makes it sound like he was some kind of militant war-monger. Actually, Sun Tzu was more of what I would call a "judo" thinker -- use your enemy's strengths and weaknesses to avoid battle and retain the upper hand. "Those who win every battle are not really skillful -- those who render others' armies helpless without fighting are the best of all . . . ." He especially counseled on the importance of spies to help you understand the enemy and advance thinking to select the ground for confrontation in a way that would give you an overwhelming advantage that would discourage the enemy from attacking. So, long before Freud, Sun Tzu was really looking at the nature of human psychology to appreciate how to influence it positively for yourself in the very dangerous business of military preparations and battle.
The strength of this book is that Grant Schnarr is very effective in translating Sun Tzu's principles into insights about how to know yourself better and make spiritual progress easier and more certain. The book is simple, clear, and well-written.
For example, in chapter 4, he cites Sun Tzu as saying "In ancient times skillful warriors first made themselves invincible and then watched for vulnerability in their opponents . . . ." Mr. Schnarr interprets that meaning that we need to focus on ourselves, to "become strong in areas that are weak, seek health where there is spiritual sickness, and build upon the moral and spiritual strengths which already exist within." To do this, he proposes using spiritually guided meditation to prepare stronger defenses against one's own negative feelings. You will still have the negative feelings, but you learn to control them before acting on them. You are then able to step outside the passion of the moment and see yourself objectively, and select the action (or inaction) that best serves your spiritual needs.
There were several useful insights that I received from this book that had never occurred to me before. Perhaps they will help you, too. First, if you find negative thoughts and actions are associated with a given situation . . . stay out of that situation. He tells the story about a woman who fought with her son every morning about getting ready for school on time. This was tearing their relationship apart and making both of them feel terrible all day. Mr. Schnarr recommended that she ask her husband to handle this with their son, instead. The father and son had few problems, and the mother was able to stay in bed. Everyone was much better off.
Second, if you are finding a given spiritual conflict too difficult, retreat and work on an easier one. For example, if you cannot control your anger, but can control your overeating, work on the latter. The spiritual strength that you gain from making progress where you are strong enough to do so will serve you well in those areas where you are not. Eventually, you can return to working on your anger and expect to be more successful because your spiritual capability has grown.
Third, get a better understanding of when you are at your best and worst spiritually. Then use those understandings to week out the former circumstances and avoid the latter. Also, learn to change the way you think in the latter situations. To me, this is a most valuable concept for introspection.
Last year, I attended a discussion of spirituality that left me feeling quite challenged. The speaker, a rabbi, proposed that the correct spiritual standard was to have no thought of doing the wrong thing spiritually or physically. That seemed impossible and unattainable. But Mr. Schnarr's advice helped me see that by organizing my life correctly, I could spend more time in circumstances and thoughts that would leave me with no such temptations. Thank you for these insights!
The book is organized so that each chapter begins with a quotation from Sun Tzu. Frequently, that quotation is also used as part of the text of the chapter. Then you will find examples of spiritual battles, and how Sun Tzu's principle can be applied to them. Next is a brief section called "Further Applications" that looks specifically at one or two examples. Finally, there are tasks (usually three) at the end of each chapter to help you apply what you have just learned. Often these tasks involve introspection and meditation. I found the tasks to be very helpful. In an appendix, there is a guide for using these materials in a workshop if you wish to teach them to others. This is perfect for a mountain retreat type of conference.
After you have finished the book and applied its lessons, I have another task for you. Think of a book that has profoundly influenced you for the better. Write down the 10 most important lessons that you learned from that book. Then, spell out how to apply those lessons to improving the spiritual lives of those you care most about. After you have done that, repeat the process with another influential book. This will keep you on the spiritual offensive and help you become stronger spiritually.
May health, happiness, peace, and prosperity follow you all the days of your life!
A Good Read.......2000-08-31
Grant Schnarr has successfully interpreted and applied Sun Tzu's ancient military teachings to our own individual spiritual lives and battles.
This book is a well written and easily readable resource for anyone pursuing a journey of self-improvement and spiritual growth. It is unique in its application of ancient Chinese wisdom in a modern spiritual context. Already embraced by leaders of the men's movement, I predict this book will reach far beyond any one movement or group of people.
As a physician, who is also a martial arts student and someone interested in spiritual development, I find this book to be very useful and entertaining.
Mr. Schnarr is to be congratulated on writing a book that brings together ideas from ancient Chinese thought, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity and other religions. He forms a cohesive vision of spiritual development and growth that encompasses all people who have a sincere interest in spiritual growth. By growing ourselves we help others.
As Mr. Sncharr writes towards the end of the book; "...by walking with intention and nobility, as a true spiritual warrior, you make this world a better place for all of us."
