It draws from a great literary tradition—The Canterbury Tales, The Decameron, the English storytellers in the Villa Diodati who produced, among other works, Frankenstein—to tell an utterly contemporary tale of people desperate that their story be told at any cost. Appallingly entertaining, Haunted is Chuck Palahniuk at his finest—which means his most extreme and his most provocative.

Fantastic book..........2007-10-09

Haunted is an amazing book. It hooked me from the start, I just had to know how the book was going to end. This book is disturbing, shocking and appalling. But the fact that this book is so deranged is exactly what makes it enjoyable. Chuck Palahniuk has some serious talent for writing, I love reading his work to find out what is going on in his mind. Haunted is not for everyone, light headed/weak stomach people need to keep away from Haunted. If you enjoy reading novels outside of the 'norm,' then this is the book for you. Overall, Haunted gets an A+ grade from me.

I am typically prepared to be somewhat horrified and grossed out by the grotesques in his world, but this was way too much. No one in the story had any redeeming qualities, I hated them all to the bitter end. I finished it because I kept thinking that something would happen at the end to make reading all the horrible things worth it, but no...bad book, bad ending.

Desperately Grand... Until the End.......2007-07-25

This book is undoubtedly a tough read for anyone who thinks that a writer is validated solely by the fact that a feature film was made of his work. I know, I know, Fight Club was great, but let's move on for a bit.

The overlying story of this book isn't the best. However, the main function of the book is to be a compendium of short stories, and it delivers those in spades. The short stories are engrossing, compelling, disturbing, shocking, desperately clever, and they will absolutely not leave your head. Nightmare Box, Guts, and the story (the name eludes me) of the "invisible" killer of random victims are all absolutely fantastic.

The problems with the book lie within the main story, which is wholly unbelievable. The characters were wonderfully created, but their actions seem incredibly rash and unrealistic. In addition, the ending was entirely too predictable. You can see it coming from a quarter into the book. It comes on rushed and poorly executed. To have a character who thought of absolutely everything on the planet being foiled by a knife in the lock seemed absurd. Walking ahead of his captive seemed absurd. Leaving anything to chance at all seemed absurd. And what that final short story was all about, I have no clue. Stay away from the sci fi, Chuck.

Still, with the short stories as brilliant as they are, you forgive the other transgressions and enjoy them for all that they are. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Chuck's entertaining and exploratory adventure into horror.......2007-05-24

Overall, Palahniuk did a marvelous job of cobbling disparate stories into the framework of a writer's retreat.

The story 'Guts' is nearly the most awful thing you'll read, personally I thought the worse thing i read was the story of the police rape doll story. It changed my life: yet I cannot say for the better. I cannot eat southern biscuits and that white gravy anymore, for example.

Some have compared Haunted to Stephen King, and I disagree. SK is-in my view- not so clever, he's like mass production horror. I read it, i get it. Haunted is more Kurt Vonnegut, and less twilight zone, more shock-value. Gross-out in bite-size chunks. IF you like this, the book is for you. Otherwise, leave it alone.

Some say the book's cannabalism theme is a metaphor in that 'all artists are thieves'. Powerful! So from a metawriting perspective, who is Chuck intimating he stole these stories from? Could be from all the fascinating weirdies in Portland. Since after all, Portland is quite weird. After reading stranger than fiction, the lines between the two are pretty well blurred by his colorful and envious experience touched up here and there.

i was actually quite upset to read some reviews on this book. It seemed like people either didn't understand it or skipped through pages. First of all, of course the story may seem unbelievable.. ITS FICTION!!!! it doesn't have to take place in a reality scenario. Second, if you actually paid attention to the story, people weren't chopping off their fingers because they were hungry; they wanted to look tortured. Sure, the idea may have been far fetched but thats what made it so interesting. and whose to complain about this story if you've read "lullaby". in my opinion, "lullaby" was more 'unbelievable'.

Overall, i believe this was one of Chucks best novels. I couldn't put the book down because all of the characters storys were so incredibly interesting. I even found the overall story (the writers being in the old movie theater) mind grabbing.

I would also recommend "Choke"

Excellent, practical handbook.......2005-08-09

This is a great, practical guide to EMI testing and troubleshooting. Includes basic fixes, utility of those fixes to resolve observed issue(s), and estimates regarding the improvement those fixes might provide. It also includes a section on in-house, "confidence" testing (without shelling out for test chamber and all of the expensive test equipment... though you'll still need some)

My background - BSEE, 15 yrs commercial and military experience. I think the text would be especially useful for Test, EMI and project engineers. It avoids deep derivation of formulae and would be useful to technicians and designers as well.

Good overall book.......2002-02-28

This book is by no means the definitive guide to EMC. The advance reader seeking such a book should consult Clayton's R. Paul book (Intro {yea right} to EMC). Nonetheless, for what it is, it is outstanding. The author covers in a general and simplified format a wide array of topics. What I most liked about the book was that the author address installations and other non-PCB related EMI issues. Basically, issues not covered by similar books that have a tendency to address only the PCB and its related IO.

This is the best collection of information about hydrosols on the market! I make lotions and oils for dogs and cats so learning about hydrosols is critical.

The author has easy to understand information about the history and process of making hydrosols. She includes concise information on specific scents and provides recipes for their use.

I'm going to use this book on a regular basis. Hydrosols: The Next Aromatherapy was strongly suggested in Kristen Leigh Bell's book, Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals (another great work).

I purchased this book when it first came out. I thoroughly enjoyed it at that time, and have used it as a reference ever since. What so many do not realize is that different treatments (distillation vs. tincture vs. absolute vs. hydrosol, etc.) of a plant result in often VERY different properties comprising that substance. So finally having some insights into the properties of hydrosols, the water remaining from the distillation of a plant, is/was much needed. No other work like it had been available.

And what a revelation about many of them. Most people, even those working with essential oils and their cousins were not aware of what this or that hydrosol might do, let alone how to get their hands on it.

Suzanne Catty says many folks believe they are allergic to scents, but scent allergies are usually owing to the impurity of the substance used. "If we used unpolluted, totally natural smells, the chances of negative health reactions would be dramatically reduced."Catty says she discovered hydrosols when she received a brochure from the Aromatic Plant Project initiated by Jeanne Rose and other pioneers. Catty thinks these substances are as effective as oils, tisanes, and other plant-based remedies.

HYDROSOLS: THE NEXT AROMA THERAPY includes a good deal of information about the beginning of the use of hydrosols and a discussion about water. Good clean water is in demand and growing scarcer every day. In years to come a growing share of the world's population will not have access to clean water. Because humans are 60-70 percent water, and totally dependent on the stuff, this is a crises. Catty suggests good water, in addition to being a life-source, can also be medicine when combined with plant substances.

A large section of the book discusses specific hydrosols, rthe water products which form as a by-product during essential oil production (i.e. healthful water derivatives). In a section entitled `The Monographs' Catty covers specific information discovered by researchers about the properties and some applications of hydrosols. Here Catty is concerned with the chemical makeup as well as various phases of hydrosol production. Temperature, filter quality and water source all play a role in the end product(production and storage).

In subsequent chapters she goes into more depth, covering uses of hydrosols: as compresses; sitz baths and regular baths; topical compresses such as masks, scrubs, and compresses; and shampoos, conditioners and rinses. She also considers hydrosols for oral use as tonics, eye-washes or douches.

I like Catty's matter-of-fact writing about these useful products. She also provides a list of sources in the appendix, including information about her own company 'Acqua Vita'.

This book is the first of its kind to exclusively profile the use of hydrosols for phytoaromatherapy.and I expect it will revolutionize aromatherapy practice. Well written and researched, this book is based on Suzanne Catty's personal research. She has tried everything in this book, often on herself, and she speaks from well informed experience! I appreciate her honesty and candor. However, since the use of hydrosols (or hydrolates) is so new, often the reader is left with many questions, no fault of Ms. Catty, to be sure. What I would have appreciated was some sort of a chart or summary at the end that easily condensed much of the information in the book. As a healthcare professional and nationally certified Aromatherapist, I highly recommend this landmark achievement.

I agree with the other reviewers in the "Waste of paper" school, though I guess it's to be expected from TAB books, the worst publisher on the planet.

Strange that Cotter Sayre has given this a glowing review. Anonymously! Sure hope he's a better writer than reviewer, as his book is next in my pile!

Definitely not a "secrets" or a "design" book.......2006-12-29

I agree with other reviews in that there are many errors in the book which should have been discovered and corrected before printing. It's not one of the worst books on the subject, but certainly not the best. The book is fun to read but is short on depth. It actually reads like a bunch of magazine article reprints that have been collected and assigned a chapter with some extra stuff thrown in. Some chapters have a lot of detail and others completely gloss over the subject (just like some magazine articles I have read). If you are looking for a general introduction to RF principles, then this book is just OK. If you are ready to get the simulator going and design a real RF circuit, you will be a bit hard pressed to make progress.

Absolutely untrustworthy!.......2005-09-07

As another reviewer wrote, "buy it used and buy it cheap." Well, I did, and _still_ feel cheated. After receiving it just this afternoon, and spending 15 minutes scanning through it, I have to say that TAB publishers, producer of this 3rd edition, obviously needs to clean house in their proofreading department, and the author, Joseph J. Carr needs to pay more attention to the galley proofs when they're sent out. Missing diagrams, wrong diagrams to match the diagram's text, and just plain wrong information renders this book untrustworthy, and therefore worthless. Amazon won't let me award zero stars so I am forced to give it one.

This book has all the necessary for starting with RF, if you have already knowledge of electronics it will be very usefull, it has all the basics of frequencies and even how to wind an inductor or how to build an antenna.

Good manual, though needs revision........2007-06-28

This laboratory manual is very concise and easy to read. The topics range from antibody production to protein/enzyme conjugation, with step by step instructions and formulations. Previous to most topics is given a fairly thorough background. One drawback is the fact that this book is nearly 20 years old (pub. 1988) and lacks a significant amount of progress made in the areas of homo and heterobifunctional linkers, PEGylation, and antibody engineering. Given a good price however, this would be a good reference manual.

This classic is getting old...
But you cand find some important informations inside, classic protocols and keys-data to the antibodies-world.
A must-have reference for any today-biologist working with antibodies (immunostaining, immunoprecipitation, Western-blot, antibodies production, etc...).

An excellent summary of immunological methods........1998-01-16

This book is indespensible for those wishing to set up any type of antibody related methodology. Gives excellent overviews of immunodiagnostic methods (ELISA,RIA,etc.), antibody production (polyclonal and monoclonal), and includes basic summaries on the nature of the immune sytem in vivo. Especially useful to researchers developing immuno-techniques as it gives detailed methodologies.

What begins as a thoughtful essay on the roots of our culture's endemic malaise, quickly develops into a compelling call to personal action. Certainly not self-help in the traditional form, but a well-crafted, thought-provoking book that can shake up your self-perspective. I personally don't want too many people rummaging through my refrigerator - but the central premise of the book left me taking stock of my life-relationships, and making practical plans to improve them.

This is a wonderful book- well-written, insightful, and engaging. It provides a unique perspective on the isolated American culture and why our relationships suffer in this setting. The book is more than just an analysis of what's hurting our relationships- it makes a convincing argument that we are not helpless American drones but can get up and do something to change our lives. In this regard, the book is very empowering and well worth reading whether you are American or not. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

As a transplant to a big city with no family and few friends close by, I had to work hard to develop meaningful relationships in my life. This book underscores why doing this is so important. Dr. Will Miller is right -- it's those close, "Refrigerator Rights" relationships that make life worthwhile. This book is a great read.

I went to a book signing where the authors were available for questions, and they gave a little presentation based on the ideas presented in "Refrigerator Rights". My first thought, "What a goofy title to a book"! I understand now the reason for the silly title, it makes a difficult and painful topic more palatable to a deadened soul. I never really saw just how far I've gotten from where I should be in this culture. The book does a great job of showing how our culture of silly amusement, me-centered living, and technology have thwarted our ability to relate to others intimately. Basically, I never realized just how much I suck. It gives the reader a clear diagnosis of how messed up he/she is. I realize now why I don't have real lasting peace in my life. I see that I need refrigerator rights. My life has been changed forever.

I don't read self-help books, but I read this one because of an interview with Dr. Miller that I saw in a magazine. It has changed my perspective on my life, my friendships and my family. HIghly recommended.
