Not the Original Book.......2007-09-01
I read this book in a college "Cultural Anthropology" class around 1986 or so, the same year "Eyes on the Prize" was airing on PBS. Both the book and the documentary series were real eye-openers for a small-town middle-America kid! I never forgot the book and its disturbing content, especially the very real statistics and news items with which the author preceeds each chapter. While this 2005 mass-market edition is still a good book, it is NOT the same book I read in college. At first I thought my memory was responsible for what felt like significant changes from the story I recalled, so I dug out my old, dog-earred copy and compared the two. Then I found a tiny footnote on the title page of the newer Baen edition: "Newly revised by the author for this edition." OH. This is not just an updating of research , statictics, etc. Some of the revisions are drastic and definately weaken and dilute the book and its message. I doubt I would have recalled the book so clearly for 20 years if I had read this edition first. I wonder what prompted the author to so dramatically alter the original?
Early Release.......2007-04-12
"Night of Power" (1985) is Spider's third or fourth novel and as such isn't quite up to the standards of his later work. In it he wrestles with white liberal guilt over the state of race relations in America. The long interior monologues by the narrator/author get preachy and wan, the characters are cartoonlike, and the action is way over the top. However as with any Spider book there are moments of sublime pleasure and delicious wordplay, and if the novel helped him work through some of the very real issues involved then it was certainly a therapeutic project. It's interesting to see several threads appear which would later be woven into his body of work.
Creative.......2006-01-31
This book left me with really strong feelings. Intellectually, I understand this as an indicator of a good read, but it was really unsettling. While I agree wholeheartedly with Michael's message, I would never, under any circumstances, support his methods, or conclude that it would get the results he sought. It was disturbing that seemingly intelligent people that I'd grown to like a lot, would let themselves get so caught up in the decisions that were forced upon them. Actually, Russell didn't until his choices were totally eliminated.
Mr. Robinson is an excellent creator of the written word, so it deserves 4 stars for that reason alone, but the end eclipsed the entire book - the ultimate commitment made by the 14 year old, Jennifer, and its acceptance, was creepy and ruined an otherwise wonderful, apocalyptic adventure.
Grim but spideresque outlook on the future of race relations.......2005-09-10
Robinson had written this in the mid-eighties, when Reagan's policies seemed to indicate a less "melting-pot" but rather WASP-oriented domestic policy. When this book went out of print, it also seemed that the idea had gone out of fashion, and it read more like a fantasy instead. It appears this book has gone to "in print" status in a very timely manner - the criticism on the treatment of the people who were affected the most by the Katrina desaster seems to echo in the story of those who would not believe peaceful co-existence between the races was possible without segragation in the territorial sense. The thrilling story of a man who would come to New York City because his black wife, a dancer, would be able to dance once more in public before age would make her retire, is made all the more poignant because recent advances in technology would make success of a revolution much more likely. So go totally unprepared, read this story with as little information as possible, and you will enjoy it the most. Spider Robinson was in a peak of his creativity (in the 80s eclipsed only by "Mindkiller") when he wrote this one.
Insightful and thought provoking........2001-11-14
I recently re-read "Night of Power" - a few weeks after the tragedy of Sept. 11 in NYC. I'd always felt the events in Spider's book to be insightful, but somehow... in the light of real life events, it was almost too painful to read. But still, as with most of Spider's works, it ends with hope. After it's all over, there's hope. We need to keep working toward that end.

"All Journeys Are Sacred" Journey with Louise StrongBear into shamanic realms of healing. Meet her teachers as she wanders through middle earth, the lower world, and the upper world, following the path of her heart. Begin in the East, and circle the Medicine Wheel to the North, finding yourself along the way. This is a heroine's journey, correlating with the journey of the fool in the major arcana of the tarot. It is also a story of finding lost soul parts, and finding your way back to your home in the stars. It is about magic, miracles, power animals, angels, witchcraft, shamanism, and shapeshifting. This is Louise's story, the one she knows by heart. And it is your story, too-the one that you forgot. "Remember You Are Magic"

Beautiful.......2007-04-01
I found this book to be a very moving experience. I enjoyed every page of the journey. I've told all my friends about it. Thank you Ms. Strongbear for sharing with us all.
Enchanting & Engaging.......2007-03-16
I found myself traveling along in the enchanted world. Knowing how close you can be to the spirit world in your dreams is a wonderment. I know there are answers in your dreams if you just look and pay attention. Thank you Louise for guiding me through. This is a book everyone should read. Buy two and give one to a friend.
Spellbound.......2007-03-13
Unlike most reviewers, I COULD put Journey by Night down - as when you
are spellbound by a beautiful dream - and you don't want it to end....
My journey through this book took me to a completely new place. I read
and reread lines, passages, poems and chapters. As with anything practiced, it got easier...
to capture a glimpse of what can be possible
on ones own personal journey.
I evolved from an onlooker in that solitary night, to a seeker.
This book and its wisdom will be my bedside companion.
Let us hope there will be many more to come.
I would give this 10 stars if I could!!!!.......2007-03-06
You would have thought Ms. StrongBear wrote books for years. Journey by Night was very inspirational. This is one to remember...come and be a Wayfarer, as Wolf states: "Wayfarer is one who travels by foot, one step at a time. This is a way of learning. Human steps." If you feel lost and alone in the world, travel with StrongBear and meet her animated characters. Once you meet "Jimmy the Leprechaun" and feel his comedic charm, (as he tickles you and himself) but his passionate soul will let you know how similar we are with other living creatures. If you are not satisfied with his cleverness, stroll down the page and take a whimsical retreat into Pegasus world. His world is not filled with long-term suffering and illness; the aura is pleasant--letting you know that the grass is greener on the other side. After reading this book it will answer your question and have you asking questions...you would want to learn more about magic!
I would like to thank you Louise StrongBear for opening up my thinking to a whole new world. I am inspired and I believe you are a healer with the ability to capture your reader. Capturing your reader to make them believe they were there with you while in fear, afraid; but yet, having the courage to find out who you are. Hesitant but eager to connect to helpful strangers; with the question--"Haven't we met before?" Questioning should you give up, but kept your feet planted on the ground as you trotted to your destiny.
Thank you once more for bringing your iridescence as you journey by night. The stars and moon are shining bright for you. Thanks for creating an uplifting story.
Book Description
In the spirit of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lamb among the Stars series weaves the worlds of science and the spirit, technology and the supernatural into something unique and haunting. On the faraway planet of Farholme, humans live in peace under the gentle rule of the Assembly. War and evil are ancient history. But suddenly, almost imperceptibly, things begin to change. Slowly a handful of men and women begin to realize that evil has returned and it must be fought.
Customer Reviews:
As good as the first book.......2007-02-23
Farholme is now isolated from the rest of the Made Worlds. The Gate to the Assembly and Ancient Earth has been destroyed. It will now take forty years for a message from the Assembly to reach them, fifty years for a ship to arrive. Merral Stefan D'Avanos is Comander of Farholme's military, something they never needed before. Merral's greatest task may very well be convincing his fellow citizens that they need a military or a police force. It's difficult for them to understand that the threat is real. But their world has been invaded by evil. People are changing, values and morals are being discarded. Pride, fear, jealousy, things unheard of in Farholme are now apparent.
The more I read about Farholme the more I recognize our own world. Evil is real and Chris Walley has done a great job of showing it's effect on ordinary people living ordinary lives. The Power of the Night is book two in the continuing saga of the citizens of Farholme. Fast paced, with lots of action, strange creatures, and herioic characters, it's a great second book in The Lamb Among the Stars series.
A bit of a disappointment.......2006-03-16
First I would like to say to anyone who really liked this book, don't get offended. I just have to say that 'The Power of the Night' was a bit disappointing after reading 'A Shadow at Evening'.
I don't know enat it lacked, but it definately lacked something. When I read the first one, I was living it, in fact I couldn't but it down. But I struggled to finish the second one. I hope that Walley writes a third book that has the same power of the first one.
I gave it three stars because I just couldn't get into it. But it is still worth reading.
The Journey Gets Deeper.......2006-01-02
The first book was awesome. I was wondering how the sequel would be, and this book does not disapoint. Even better than the first one, The cast of characters expands and the array of enemies widens to quite an impressive amount of unique creatures. Take my word for it, Walley breaks the mold of boring cliched science fiction and offers a thrilling new experience full of intrigue and suspense. THIS IS WELL WORTH READING!
Only one problem, this book does contain nudity in it, which is a necessary part of the plot, but I would discourage youger readers from reading this book.
Power of the Night.......2005-09-30
Great story......if you like fantasy.....you will love this book.
Personally I think the theology is a bit off......but that does not detract from the story. Chris Walley is a master at his craft! I am looking forward to more from his pen.
Authors should take notes from Chris Walley.......2005-08-13
Chris Walley has brilliantly crafted a fully realized futuristic sci-fi / fantasy epic for young people and adults. The well thought out characters, compelling situations, and sweeping landscapes will keep the reader immersed, excited, and thoughtfully challenged. Regardless of individual background, an inspiring story of good and evil and the difficult decisions, sacrifices, and mistakes made in times of trouble will be richly revealed with each passing page. With the battle for hearts and minds in our own culture, both on an internal and external level, Mr. Walley's imagined world resonates provokingly with our own changing world. There is much to keep coming back to in "The Lamb Among the Stars" series, and readers will doubtless be reflective after finishing each book, as well as excited to find out what happens next! In a genre where there just doesn't seem enough of this type of literature, more from the imagination of this fresh, new author is anxiously awaited!

Great Book!.......2000-08-22
As an avid dreamer and someone who dreams nightly and remembers thier dreams, I was always asking myself "what the hell did that mean"! This book not only helped me in understanding what my dreams meant but taught me valuable skills that I could use myself to unlock the messages of my dreams. Moreover by listening to and understanding my dreams I have been able to use them to great success both in my personal and professional life. It's like having my own private, personal adviser. I'm reading it again!

DEFINITIVE NEW BOOK ON DREAM INTERPRETATION - A CLASSIC.......2000-02-25
As a licensed clinical social worker and mental health professional, I found Cynthia Richmond's DREAM POWER to be one the best books on dream interpretation that I've read. It is an easy, enjoyable read, filled with illuminating case studies and wonderful commentary. This is the most useful recent book on dream interpretation I've encountered, and an asset to anyone who searches to gain a better understanding of the meaning of their dreams. It is comprehensive, giving a wide array of types of dreams, and also gives the reader tips on how to improve dream recall and use one's dreams to improve one's waking life. This was a joy to read!
What an eye opener!.......2000-01-31
This book by Cynthia Richmond is truely an eye opener. One of the things that I really liked was that I could see that there are several other people on the planet that have the same sort of dreams that I have had. I thought that was so cool. I have so often wondered what those dreams mean and now I can figure them out. Also..this book would be interesting to people that normally aren't interested in dreams as it is straight to the point and step by step....great book!

The story of the development of artificial light in the 19th century is not only a history of its technology but a revelation of how that technology helped forge modern consciousness. The range of subjects includes the political symbolism of streetlamps, the rise of nightlife and the shop window, and the importance of the salon in the bourgeois culture. Very Highly Recommended.
Customer Reviews:
illuminating reading.......2002-10-18
This rather obscure book shouldn't be; a very meticulous and perceptive history of an important subject, the history of artificial light, Schivelbusch provides excellent research and, significantly, adds unexpected observations along the way, such as the political dimension of artificial light, light as an expression of statist control. Highly recommended.
Fascinating.......1999-05-04
An interesting treatment that focuses on the social aspects of technology, and a useful reminder of way of life that seems long past but is chronologically recent.
Book Description
Songs in the Night book 3, the sequel to the award-winning His Watchful Eye. Following World War II, little has changed in Berlin. The Swastika has been replaced by the Hammer and Sickle, the soldiers by secret police, but a life of daily oppression and fear remains. Inspired by the memory of Joseph Schumacher, his widow forms a contentious coalition to sneak six disabled young people over the Berlin Wall, out of Communist East Germany, and on to either freedom or capture.

A Heart Wrenching Story!.......2004-09-07
Even though World War II has come to an end, little has changed in Berlin. While the Swastika has been replaced by the Hammer and Sickle, and soldiers by secret police, life of oppression and fear remains.
When Mady Schumacher learns of the location of the six disabled orphans her now deceased husband, Josef, had cared for, Mady and a long-time friend, Konlon, dream up an elaborate plan to break the kids out of the mental institution they have been placed in. After they rescue the children, they hope to smuggle them over the Berlin Wall and eventually take them to America. Unfortunately, before they can even get the kids out the institution, things start to go wrong. Will what follows be a blessing or a curse?
ABOVE ALL EARTHLY POWERS is a heart wrenching story about the struggles which residents of East Berlin faced behind the Berlin Wall. The characters in the story are very well developed, instantly drawing the reader in. You become acquainted and fall in love with blind `Tomcat' and follow him around as he is able to escape the mental institution and find his friends, tell them where he and the other five have been hidden, and then his return back to the institution to wait for `the rescue'.
Even though ABOVE ALL EARTHLY POWERS is book three in the Songs of the Night series, it easily stands alone. Readers might want to pick up the first two books While Mortals Sleep and His Watchful Eye just to find out what happened prior to this story though. While the Berlin Wall was in existence since before I was born, I do remember the day it came down. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, they have a portion of the wall on display, and it was awesome to be able to touch a huge piece of history like that. Having experienced the sheer magnitude of the `small piece' of the wall that the museum had, it had to be a daunting job to dream up escape attempts and then try to carry them out with armed guards ready to shoot without warning.

Book Description
Hailed by The New York Times as a "formidable young writer ... one who unpacks her characters' emotions with a firm, graceful hand," Nani Power garnered impressive acclaim for her profound debut last year. A darkly lyrical, charged exploration of the double-edged sword of urban anonymity, her novel was deemed "daring" and "one-of-a-kind" by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Crawling at Night is a searing, unforgettable portrait of New York City and of the appetites and self-sabotaging patterns of its displaced inhabitants. Ito is a literate yet tongue-tied sushi chef who recites haiku in his head as he labors over shopping lists, which at once define and confine him. Alone, he dreams of Mariane, a lost alcoholic waitress who works with him at the Chelsea sushi bar. Ito can't help but live part of every waking day reliving the tragedy he left behind in Japan, and across town Mariane yearns for the baby girl she abandoned almost fifteen years before. In the spinning haze of two nights in Manhattan, Ito and Mariane find themselves careening on a downward spiral through the dark streets of the city. As they navigate a sea of alcohol, sex, and exotic food, we are taken inside the minds of other scarred people they encounter, whose paths, like the streets of the city itself, crisscross and overlap, skimming one another for some sort of connection. Crawling at Night is a dazzling evocation of the way people draw each other in to absorb the shock of loneliness, and how they then either drift out of orbit or are pushed away. With heartbreaking intimacy, Power shows that the dark side of the city and its struggling inhabitants is but an extension of the purest longings and intentions of those very same, very human people. "... profound and thrilling ... Crawling at Night will not only be a sensation of the season, it will also endure." -- Robert Olen Butler "A formidable young writer ... one who can put you in mind of both Mary Gaitskill and Denis Johnson." -- Dwight Garner, the New York Times Book Review "... an effective exploration of the lies we tell ourselves to help us handle the business of living." -- Jabari Asim, Washington Post Book World "[Power] has an astonishing talent ... deeply affecting...." -- Bookforum
Customer Reviews:
A challenging read that leaves the reader wondering about the characters.......2005-10-07
Another reviewer has already said it--the flashbacks in this novel make it a bit difficult to follow, at first. As soon as the reader gets involved, however, the flashbacks are essential to filling in the backstories of the sushi chef Ito, the alcoholic waitress Marianne, a Vietnamese boat refugee, and an exotic massage parlour worker. The entire novel takes place in two short nights, but the flashbacks constitute the core of the story, and the many American and Asian characters that make up this complicated and tragic tale.
As an American, the alcoholic waitress Marianne is the one I most closely identify with, as she lost her child to child protective services and moved to the city with big dreams (or delusions) of earning her way back into respectable life. I wonder how Japanese and Vietnamese immigrants feel about the portrayal of their heritage in this book.
This is a beautifully written tragedy, and for anyone who enjoyed this book, I highly recommend Andre Dubus III's The House of Sand and Fog.
A dark and lurid read!.......2003-03-28
Dark and lurid novels have always enhanced my reading experience, and the beautiful descriptions and passionate prose in Crawling at Night floored me from beginning to end.
Set in Manhattan, Crawling at Night is the story of Ito and Mariane -- a tormented sushi chef and the woman of his dreams. Painful pasts, loneliness and the cruel anonymity of the city nights bind these two together -- and the result is a powerful and literary tale of love and loss.
The characterization is flawless... Nani Power has created two protagonists that touch the reader's soul. Also, Manhattan is the perfect backdrop for this book, for it illustrates the darkness and piercing loneliness the characters endure. This is one of the best dark reads I've had all year. Nani Power is a wonderful new voice in fiction and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
Ruthless Review.......2002-07-22
Courtesy of ruthlessreviews.com
The book jacket informs us, in the kind of bio all publicists dream of, that before she wrote this, her debut novel, Nani Power was a caterer in Manhattan, a sandwich seller on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, a chef in a Japanese restaurant, and a nanny to a family living in a trailer. All of these experiences seem relevant when taking into account Crawling At Night but one title is missing; sensualist.
Two discordant protagonists paint the narrative alive in this nihilistic and self-destructive tale of loss and decay. Ito is a Japanese sushi chef with a dark past who runs to New York City to escape his demons, but, as Walden once said, "you cannot run from your past. Wherever you may go, the giant goes with you." Mariane is a raging alcoholic with a similar attachment to her past failings who loses her job when her boss attempts, and fails, to rape her. Ito discovers that he cannot save Mariane from herself, and her past, where she longs to reclaim the daughter she gave up, and therefore he cannot forgive himself for abandoning his violent son.
Told largely in flashbacks blended with the present bitterness, Crawling At Night seethes with sexuality and desire, utilizing it as a means of temporary escape until reality comes crashing back in. Unfortunately, without the sex, and the naked woman on the cover, this story would have lost me in the first five pages. I particularly enjoyed the passages where Ito recalls his time in Japan spent in a whorehouse where he fell in love with a girl named Xiu-xiu while his wife was being eaten alive by cancer at home alone. It was there that I found Nani's real power coming through, in the subtle sifting of sex and death, which is what, at its core, all great literature is about.

a desert island book..........2002-01-23
i love the way power uses flashblacks in this story; kind or reminds me of the movie " memento." she utilizes them to a point that she completely manipulates time. the characters are extremely compelling, especially ito and mariane...nani skillfully takes on the oriental and the poor white worlds and manages to shows each beautifully. the last 100 pages left me reeling. one you read mariane's story, you'll see just how much damage sexual abuse and alcoholism can do to a person....
A Modern Day William Faulkner.......2001-09-04
I haven't enjoyed reading about people so much in ages. And yet the themes and lessons that gel beneath the players' fits are spread like a web to catch the conscience. You haven't experienced New York City until you've read Nani Power's Crawling at Night. You didn't know what you were up to in the country and suburbs, but now, by reference, you will.
Book Description
The publication by the University of California Press of Five Screenplays by Preston Sturges and Four More Screenplays by Preston Sturges has been applauded by cinephiles and admirers of the director's work, and recognized as a major contribution to the history of American cinema. In this third volume of scripts by one of Hollywood's wisest and wittiest filmmakers, the focus turns to those screenplays written but not directed by Sturges.
Included in the new collection are The Power and the Glory, which greatly influenced Orson Welles in the conception of Citizen Kane, and the romantic comedies Remember the Night and Easy Living. The scripts reveal Sturges in top form as a writer of dialogue and prove beyond any possible doubt his authorship of the films, which frequently appear indistinguishable on-screen from those he himself directed.
Full of surprises and delights, these Three More Screenplays are essential reading for students of American cinema and admirers of Sturges. They cast new light on his collaborations with directors Mitchell Leisen and William K. Howard, and provide a rousing conclusion to the writings of this Hollywood master. In his substantial introduction to the volume, film historian and screenplay writer Andrew Horton analyzes the contributions of Sturges to the film comedy genre and to Hollywood film history.
