Book Description

No good deed goes unpunished . . .

Working as a consultant for a Baltimore newspaper, p.i. Tess Monaghan seems far removed from the unsolved slaying of a young federal prosecutor—until her well-meaning boyfriend, Crow, brings a street kid into their lives, a juvenile con artist who doesn't even realize he holds an important key to the sensational homicide. But Tess's ethical decision to protect the boy's identity no matter what could have dire consequences—especially when one of his friends is murdered in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity.

With federal agents threatening her with felony charges—and a killer threatening far worse—Tess couldn't deliver the kid to investigators even if she wanted to once Crow goes into hiding with his young protégé. So her only recourse is to get to the heart of the sordid and deadly affair while they're all still free . . . and still breathing.

5 out of 5 stars No Good Deeds by Laura Lippman.......2007-07-10

In Lippman's latest installment of the Tess Monaghan series, Tess has taken on a new gig as consultant to the local newspaper, where her job duties are to train reporters in investigative techniques, using three recent cases as paradigms. One of the cases Tess plans to focus on is the murder of a local federal prosecutor. When Tess's significant other, Crowe, befriends a homeless street kid, Tess inadvertently learns the young man has information about who killed the prosecutor. In an effort to inform the authorities without identifying her source, Tess sets up an interview between the young man and a reporter. Although she promises Crowe she will do everything she can to protect the young man's identity, federal agents insist she reveal her source. When Tess doesn't cooperate, they begin to threaten her family and hint at filing felony charges against her. Crowe goes into hiding with the young man, unaware that two federal agents have honed in and are after them, not to bring them in but to kill them.

The Tess Monaghan series remains a constant bestseller in PI series to date. Tess is a strong character, a young woman with an edge. To counterbalance her cynicism is her mate, laidback and amiable Crowe. Lippman excels at characterization, and with No Good Deeds allows the reader a deeper look into Crowe's persona and background. And, as always, spending time with Tess is a bonus. This must-read moves at a fast pace and has plenty of interesting characters.

I will try to read more of her only because it took me
3 chapters to figure out who did what. Will never be a PD James.

4 out of 5 stars Ghetto blasting.......2007-04-17

When PI Tess Monoghan and her boyfriend, Crow befriend (a little unwillingly on Tess's part) Lloyd, a tough, black teenager from the ghettos of Baltimore, they put in motion a series of events which are connected with murder, drug dealing and extortion by people who should know better. Lloyd is living on the streets in a hand to mouth fashion, getting money for food from begging, scams and from skirting around the edges of a criminal element which uses young boys to do their dirty work. When the body of Federal Attorney, Gregory Youssef is found, Agents begin digging to find connections with drug dealers and Lloyd clearly is frightened by the name of Youssef, even though he claims never to have met him. Tess, Crow and their families are threatened when crooked Federal agents try to locate Lloyd and so are forced to go into hiding and to call in favours from family and friends, to remain alive. It's an exciting, pacy read which fans of Tess Monoghan will thoroughly enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2007-04-08

This is the third Tess Monaghan novel I've read and I don't think it compares well with Ms. Lippman's earlier work. Crow is an annoying character. It is hard to understand how Tess even tolerates him. While reading it I kept thinking how two-dimensional he is. A 1960s hippie-wannabe who doesn't seem to understand how the world works. It also bothered me that by the end of the book there were still a couple of unresolved plot twists. Ms. Lippman is an excellent writer and her style and pacing kept me interested enough to move through the book in a single sitting. Because of her writing ability I'm looking forward to reading her latest novel, "What the Dead Know." At least I know I won't have to put up with Crow in that one. (It is a stand alone book, not part of the Monaghan series.

3 out of 5 stars No More Crow, Please!.......2007-04-04

I think Laura Lippman is a terrific writer, and I love Tess and this entire series. However, the one character I've never been able to stand is Crow, so I didn't really enjoy a book that was mostly about him.

I thought it was out of character for Tess to not question Crow about all his money via the disposable cellphone, and moreso to not be upset to find out he'd been keeping it from her considering her own financial problems. I also couldn't understand why she'd be putting herself and her family at so much risk for someone she didn't even know (who tried to take advantage of her) and a guy she was slowly finding out she barely knew and might not be able to trust.

As with all her books, this one was well-written and hard to put down. I just wish I didn't have to suffer through the annoying Crow to enjoy it.

    Book Description

Her writing has been called “powerful and subtle,” (The Times, U.K.) her plotting “original and shiver-count high.” (The Times, U.K.) Now Manda Scott has written a powerful thriller debut, the terrifying tale of a lone woman pitted against an enigmatic killer—a man who deals out death without a second thought....

    NO GOOD DEED

For Detective Inspector Orla McLeod, violence is a way of life. As a child, her own world was ripped apart by a brutal, unforgettable moment of terror. So when the Special Branch operation she is spearheading goes disastrously wrong, she will do everything she can to protect the nine-year-old boy caught in the cross fire. For Jamie Buchanan was the sole witness to an act of savagery committed in cold blood by a man rapidly becoming one of the most feared criminals in Europe.

Orla and her partner, Luke Tyler, had risked their lives to infiltrate Tord Svensen’s criminal world. Together they had gone deep undercover in a Glasgow tenement to get close enough to bring him down. Then in a series of harrowing events, everything in Orla’s life would change forever.

Now Orla finds herself haunted by the memory of what happened—and tormented by the guilt she feels over her own survival. What keeps her going are the promises she made to her partner Luke and to orphaned Jamie Buchanan. Jamie is the only person who’s seen Tord Svensen’s face, the only one able to ID him. Officially pulled off the Svensen case, Orla spirits Jamie away to the only place she feels safe, a lonely cottage under the shadow of a snowcapped Scottish mountain. But there will be no sanctuary for them in the Highlands. For, like Orla, the hunter who pursues them knows exactly what to do to survive. And that means putting both Orla and her vulnerable young charge in the grave.

Chilling, intense, and stylishly written, No Good Deed places Manda Scott among the forefront of today’s best thriller writers.

    Book Description

The shocking true crime--as seen on A&E's Cold Case Files.

In La Jolla, California, just before Christmas, 1998, David Stevens's Chrysler LeBaron exploded into flames that could not hide two bullets in his skull. For three years, the police were baffled, until an acquaintance of the victim revealed startling details-and a motive for Stevens's slaying that was even more shocking than the crime itself.

2 out of 5 stars No Good Deed is not a good book........2007-03-02

The story in itself is interesting, but not landmark. But what really hurts this book, is the writer. It reads as if written on some teenage boy's blog. Along with unneccessary commentary, Basinski includes constant comparisons to the O.J. Simpson trial. This opinion is not supported by actual research, by like so much of the book-mere commentary of the author. From page 191,
"Maybe, in a burst of optimism, the defense attorneys might hope for a second-degree murder verdict based on Ron Barker's uncontrolled rage. Stranger things have happened. Remember a guy named O.J. Simpson?"
Granted, many people joke about O.J. Simpson's innocence. However such jokes seem grossly out of place and read as unprofessional in such a book.
It is if the whole book was written by free-association after doing the research. The author will switch from narrative writing to what one can only assume are his thoughts on what the person he is observing is thinking. Considering he supposedly interviewed many of these people, such liscense should not be allowed.
There are also annoying little quips interjected throughout the text. After a defense lawyer's questioning where he asks for a dismissal for his client due to the fact that she was not involved with the cause of death, Basinski writes, "Yes, Mr. Stevens. I'm sorry to inform you your son's death was caused by two bullet wounds to the head and a gallon of gasoline." It's more a statement than the intended witty quip.
There are many better books out there to spend your money on. I would recommend almost any other one.

4 out of 5 stars An unlikely victim.......2007-02-08

This isn't a flashy story like so many we see in the media, but one of diligence. The murder of David Stevens was puzzling to the police and devastating to the Stevens family, as he had no dark side, no enemies, nothing that would cause him to be murdered so brutally. The only evidence was a set of palm prints on a mirror. The detectives had theories about what happened to David, and ran down every lead, but the only progress they made was ruling out suspects. The Stevens family felt the murder wasn't a priority, it wasn't solved in a timely manner, and they weren't being kept informed. They soon got caught up in a private detective's fantasy-world hypotheses and went public in their criticism of the police. After three years and nothing new happening, a call came in from a woman who claimed to have information on the murder. The story picks up, and we find out the strange and sad tale of David's last hours. If Ny Nourn had not come forward (for whatever her reasons were), the case may never have been solved, although I believe her involvement was more than what she testified to.

    1 out of 5 stars Argh!!!.......2007-01-29

I truly cannot finish this book. I have tried and tried, but just cannot. I even picked it up again after I saw a story of the crime on MSNBC. But the book is so badly written.........

    5 out of 5 stars Sound Fundamentals.......2007-01-26

Ex-Cop Tom Basinki's writing in No Good Deed is the non-fiction equal to Michael Connelly's fictional cop procedure books. Basinski and Connelly are the best pros around. If you want to know how real cops work No Good Deed tells it like it is. If you want phony story or cute fictional devices go someplace else. If you are a budding mystery writer No Good Deed is a great primer.

    1 out of 5 stars Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-01-25

That has got to be one of the worst books I have read in a long time. It actually took me forever to read because it was so boring. I almost put it down and gave up many times, but hate the fact that I wasted money on this. It would have been much better with more history on all of the players in this crime.

Do not buy this book if you are looking for something you cannot put down.

Lynn Hightower's female characters take no prisoners. Sonora Blair, tough-but-vulnerable Cincinnati police detective, knows the father of 15-year-old Joellen Chauncey is involved somehow in his daughter's mysterious disappearance. But Sonora's boss, partner, and colleagues think she's crazy. Dixon Chauncey is a devoted single father of three, and a mild, self-effacing milquetoast who's much too "squishy" to be a suspect. Sonora doesn't buy the official line--that Joellen got caught between two feuding scam artists involved in a thoroughbred swindle--not even when the girl's body turns up, along with an empty, blood-spattered horse trailer. Sonora won't ignore what her gut tells her. And when Joellen's diaries open up a whole new line of investigation tied into a missing children's network, she renews her efforts to find the crack in Dixon's façade. The plot is full of seductive McGuffins: the owner of a riding school who lands in the hospital minus a finger; a mysterious and sexy stranger hanging around the barn. The narrative meanders a bit, taking in Sonora's failings as a single mother to her own kids, her impulsive decision to buy a horse, and her overactive libido (which fastens itself on three different men in a little over 300 pages). But the book is crisply written, with resonant characters and a suspenseful narrative. It's a special treat for horse fanciers. --Jane Adams

    Book Description

It happened in broad daylight.  .  .

The pretty fifteen-year-old had saddled up for an afternoon ride and never come back.

She was gone.  So was her horse.  Left behind was a splintered fence.  The tracks of a pickup truck.  A discarded riding boot.  And a great deal of blood.

As a mother herself, Cincinnati detective Sonora Blair knew she was looking at a parent's worst nightmare.  As a homicide cop, she tried not to think about what might be happening to the young girl right now .  .  .  or what the police would find if they didn't get to her in time.

But nothing in Sonora's experience could prepare her for the chilling revelations that would emerge from this case .  .  .  or for the truth about other missing children, a lover's betrayal, and another unthinkable crime.  .  .

This was one of the most enjoyable mysteries I have read so far this year. Hightower's attention to detail is just right, making me feel at times like I was reading a true-crime book. I haven't read any of her other novels (yet), but if they're like this one, then this ranks with one of the best series on mystery fiction. I've docked the novel one star because an important clue was not discovered until the end.

    2 out of 5 stars Fair - nothing special.......2002-03-25

A fair mystery, nothing special. 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-11-01

I am a fan of good detective fiction. But sadly, I have found that many pieces of the genre fail to thrill and satisfy me the way Hightower has with NO GOOD DEED. After reading this book, I can easily place Lynn S. Hightower in the same category as John Grisham. Hightower's heroine Sonora Blair is both bewitching and believable. And the ending is a jolt! (As endings should be with any good piece of detective fiction.)

4 out of 5 stars Good book, I can do without some of the language........1999-07-17

There are a lot of good books out there. This is one of them. One small mistake: frieze branding is incorrect. The correct term is FREEZE. It is done with an iron cooled by liquid nitrogen, which causes the hair pigment to turn white. Good especially for use on horses. Not practical on cattle as it doesn't always "take." And it is not legal for determining ownership on cattle.

    4 out of 5 stars I'm surprized I hadn't discovered Hightower earlier!.......1998-12-28

Lynn Hightower spins a good detective/cop story. This one is set in the lower echelons of the horse business, and the auction scenes may break your heart, as they did that of the heroine, Sonora Blair. The plot was intricate and absorbing, had enough twists and turns to keep a veteran reader of this genre interested, and had good characterization, especially of the harried life of a working mother/police detective/single woman seraching for love & romance protagonist, Sonora. And I liked the setting of horsey Cincinnati, even though I'm not particularly horse-enamored. It made me want to take a drive through the area and look again at the marginal horse farms, not just the ritzy ones.

I liked this book well enough to go searching for other detective mysteries by Hightower.

    2 out of 5 stars Eh..........2003-11-26

I didn't really enjoy this book. First, there were ... errors in it. Michael did not heal Liz. Anyone writing a book about Roswell should know that. Also, I didn't like the interaction between Liz and Tess. Yes, I am not a Tess fan, but I didn't like how she walked on Liz at all. It wasn't how it happened in the show, and that really bothered me. As for storyline, the book was pretty good. If you've never seen the show, you will probably like it. If you're a die hard fan of the show, and little mistakes drive you insane, or if you aren't a big fan of Tess, this probably isn't the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good Roswell novel, based on great story idea........2003-07-07

I really like it when authors who write novelizations related to TV shows decide to base their story on possible consequences of actions taken by the characters in the show. This book does that, playing on the idea of unintended effects resulting from Max's decision to heal the children in the hospital in the episode "Roswell Christmas Carol". Now, a Father wants his daughter healed, too, and kidnaps Michael because he thinks the young man holds the answer. At the same time, criminals are using Max's unexplained good dead to make money off of unsuspecting victims by selling them a cure that they say was used on the kids Max healed. The group goes looking for Michael when he turns up missing, while at the same time dogding a reporter who suspects Max had something to do with the so called "Christmas Miracle". All in all, the story was a good one, but did kind of drag at times. Also, the author really spent too much time exploring the thoughts of the reporter and the criminals hiding out and selling their elixer over the internet. Ultimately, the Roswell fan reading this book probably doesn't care what the one criminal thinks about the other criminal he's working with, or how he doesn't like the way he is talked to sometimes by his partner. It was still a well constructed story with a great premise working behind it.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2002-06-19

I really liked No Good Deed. It kept my interest throughout the whole book! I thought the writing was good and the plot was even better. The one thing that bothered me was that they kept mentioning Michael's parents. Michael, as many Roswell fans know, was an orphan and never had parents. Maybe in the book Michael did have parents though. I'm not sure. Other than that the book was wonderful! I would definately recommend it to anyone who is thinking of reading it!

5 out of 5 stars No Good Deed Roswell 2.......2002-03-17

As a huge fan of Roswell and especially the character of Michael Guerin, I was really impressed with this book. It gave me a glimpse of another side of Michael. The side that so desperately wants to be like Max. To be able to heal instead of hurt. I also like the fact that books are somewhat in connection with the T.V. story lines. I have read the first in the series and plan on read the third. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the show or is interested in it.

4 out of 5 stars Carrying on with a really good idea.......2002-01-30

On Christmas Eve Max and Michael snuck into a childrens ward in Arizona to heal the children there for Christmas. It was an act that will come back to haunt them. A desperate father remembers Michael from that night, and he has plans for him. Chad Newcomb's little daughter missed out on the "Christmas Miracle", and he plans on making sure that Katie will be saved by one of the angels. As the rest of the gang try and save him, they find themselves dealing with an annoying reporter who keeps getting in the way. A medical scam keeps everyone guessing.

Based on the television series, this novel follows "Loose Ends". I really enjoyed this novel, finding it well written, and the switching viewpoints made the book more interesting. Unlike "Loose Ends" this novel shows a more faithful following of the characters that were developed for television from the books written by Metz. It is nice to see too that Michael has become something of a main character rather than having yet another book from the perspective of Max and Liz.

This book gets a huge thumbs up both for the quality of the writing, and a great storyline.

      Book Description

For Tess Monaghan, the unsolved murder of a young federal prosecutor is nothing more than a theoretical problem, one of several cases to be deconstructed in her new gig as a consultant to the local newspaper. But it becomes all too tangible when her boyfriend brings home a young street kid who doesn't even realize he holds an important key to the man's death. Tess agrees to protect the boy's identity no matter what, especially when one of his friends is killed in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity. But with federal agents determined to learn the boy's name at any cost, Tess finds out just how far even official authorities will go to get what they want. Soon she's facing felony charges -- and her boyfriend, Crow, has gone into hiding with his young protégé, so Tess can't deliver the kid to investigators even if she wants to. Time and time again Tess is reminded of her father's old joke, the one about the most terrifying sentence in the English language: "We're from the government -- and we're here to help."

      Book Description

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished is the story of three businessmen whose personal needs and desires bring them together in a plan of massive corporate fraud and embezzlement as one misdeed, unchecked, leads to another and then another. Together, in order to steal millions, they cripple the third largest manufacturer of PC's in America (NServer) through a plan that seems too simple to work, and yet that is why it does work. Opposing these are the corporate servants who are just trying to do their jobs. They are not super detectives. They are just everyday people trying to live within the rules, doing their assigned tasks for no more than a paycheck. One of these is NServer's new CFO who is hired to clean up the mess, but before he can even get started documents come to light that put him, and his spotless reputation, right in the middle of the embezzlement scheme. It takes Eric Peterson, an outsider from a large Boston law firm, to piece the puzzle together and drive No Good Deed Goes Unpunished to its unexpected conclusion.

      4 out of 5 stars A Legal Whodunit.......2006-10-18

This book exposes the psyche of the corporate criminal. I have always wondered, and now Kellegrew helps me understand, how corruption can hide behind the mask of bureaucracy. I have been amazed at the brazen attitude of some who proclaim their innocence in the face of the obvious. This book delves into the attitudes, actions, and twisted conscience of what appears to be a likely scenario playing out frequently in corporate America.

Bob Kellegrew is a practicing attorney. That makes the story credible and informative from a legal and insider's view. I began to read the book as I read historical fiction, both as entertainment and as education. I learned much about executive suite reality by reading this work of fiction.

I recommend the book to those who like a good whodunit and to those who are seeking a glimpse into the life of a top floor executive.

5 out of 5 stars Great read in business ethics and lack thereof!.......2006-05-16

Honestly I have to say the book was a great read. After the first few chapters I could not put it down and was skipping workouts and dinner preparation in order to get to the next chapter. Finally I was driven to a sleepless night of reading to finish the story.

This book keeps building right up until the end, to the point where I couldn't put the book down waiting to see what would happen next. The end caught me completely off guard - Great Job!

5 out of 5 stars Corporate Greed Exposed.......2005-12-07

A timely novel on deceit and immorality in the high-tech industry. The transition of the antagonists from merely being unlikeable to being actually despised makes it difficult to put the book down and to resist the urge to peek ahead a few pages. You know they will get their just desserts but how and when fuels the reader's curiosity. Kellegrew takes complex legal/financial issues and makes them both understandable and readable. Highly recommended for anyone in the Corporate world.

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific Read.......2005-11-22

I just finished the book, WOW it was terrific. I'm having book withdrawals already.

4 out of 5 stars Lost sleep ..........2005-11-20

I really enjoyed reading No Good Deed Goes Unpunished. This story provided me with a new and absorbing look at corporate law and the types of issues that may face a corporate officer and General Counsel. The sleazy and greedy behavior portrayed does not seem to be much of a stretch for some people.

I have only one complaint - I couldn't put it down and ended up with a few late nights. Now that I am done, the rest of the family can read it.
