Rise Above is Gwen Shamblin's follow-up to her million-selling, spiritually based weight loss book, The Weigh Down Diet. Expanding the principles of that book, Rise Above promises to deliver readers from what Shamblin calls the "bondage" of food. Rather than offering a simple diet plan, Shamblin addresses the spiritual root causes of overeating and admonishes her readers to serious introspection. "We are not lacking for information now," Shamblin explains, "we are hurting for motivation and heart-changing cultivation." Shamblin helps readers find motivation to master their cravings for food by reminding them of God's desire to control every aspect of life. "You may eat anything," she writes, "but you are not to be mastered by anything, for 'you are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body' (1 Cor. 6:19b-20)." Shamblin, a registered dietician, conveys her nutritional expertise and her spiritual conviction in every chapter of this straightforward, commonsensical, Bible-based book.

It's Not About Weight Loss.......2007-06-12
I have this book and read the first three chapters before I put it down. Mrs. Shamblin's doctrinal beliefs do not mirror mainstream Christian thinking. She has an agenda she is pushing, but it's not about weight loss. I encourage readers to check out Christian reviews about her weight loss program and her church. It is really scary stuff. If your goal is to lose weight and to experience a closer walk with God, The Dieter's Prayer Book by Heather Harpham Kopp can be used with any healthy-eating weight loss program.
Mixed Bag of Truth and Error.......2007-05-28
First I will say that Gwen Shamblin is giving us the truth about how to lose weight and win our battle with food. She has correctly diagnosed that food has become a God-substitute in our culture. She tells us truly that we are a greedy and self-indulgent people. If you follow her guidance about tuning in to your God-given hunger and fullness mechanism, and obeying God's signals for eating, you will lose weight. You will overcome temptation as you trust God more and consciously think about what you are doing in the realm of God's will concerning over indulgence.
However, if you are an 'orthodox' Christian, you will be challenged by some of Gwen's teachings, and will find them disturbing. If you believe that God is triune, and that Jesus is the Son of God and God the Son, prepare to be challenged. Gwen takes Scripture out of context, or uses only her very narrow interpretation of certain 'proof texts' for her agenda. Her understanding of Church history is limited at best, and is sometimes very wrong. She can come across as judgmental and mean.
If you are a very strong in your faith, you may be annoyed at some teachings, but you can still benefit from this program. Keep your focus on the Exodus metaphor, and Gwen's teachings about God's design for your hunger mechanism and how to cooperate with it. Stay attuned to learning more about how God works in your life, especially in the things you never thought about before (like your relationship to food). You will lose weight, and can gain a closer relationship with God. You may have to ignore a lot of bad theology, but Gwen's teaching on overindulgence as idolatry is very good.
Life Changing Source.......2006-06-27
I am appalled at some of the negative comments this book has received since it is indeed a life changing source of information. Her book was written with poise and a deep love for our Lord and Savior. Not only will you learn how to break free from strongholds, but you will learn how to have an awesome love affair with the 1 true GOD. So please rescue yourself from the clutches of the enemy and begin to live anew. Thankyou Mrs. Shamblin for your wonderful insight.
this woman is NOT A PROPHETESS as she claims.......2006-01-04
do not waste your money...gwen shamblin is a leader of a CULT!!! i know people who belong to her remnant fellowship-they have completely abandoned their family members who are not part of the "chosen few" who know the real "truth"...do not support this woman or her leaders. eat less and excersize more, the weight will come off. ask GOD to help you and strengthen your resolve...but don't look to Gwen...she is the devil's friend.
Graceless Message in all of Gwen's books.......2005-12-21
Started to attend the new Change series one month ago and felt something was definately missing in her message about how God viewed me about my sin of over eating.I had bought her books the Weighdown diet and Rise Above. Many scriptures to back all her claims but where is the scriptures on Grace? Aren't we saved by Grace through faith,it's a gift from God,not of works so no one can boast? Well that's all she does boast how only her Remnant Fellowship and like minded people will be saved from God's wrath. My bible tells me God has not appoint us to wrath! That's why Christ came in the first place. Why does she looks at the speck in her brothers eye when all along she has a log in her eye?I know if I were to die today even overweight I would go to heaven because I am In Christ. And don't tell me it's cheap Grace.Grace isn't cheap Christ paid the price so we can be saved. These books are full to the brim of Pharisee legalism just Beware.Believe me I sent alot of money on the series and the Holy Spirit is the one who showed me the error in these teachings along with other ex-Remnamt members and Weighdown members (you can find out that this teaching is a cult on the internet),who were either kicked out and never spoken to again or made to be ridiculed in front of the whole Remnant church.I threw away ALL of my books related to Gwen Shamblin. Some claim that there's fruit in people lives and it's changed them.Well there's fruit in other cults too and some day they will be tested by fire (holy spirit) and I believe all her works will be burned up as chaff!

A Timeline of Emancipation
In Forever Free, Eric Foner, the leading historian of America's Reconstruction era, reexamines one of the most misunderstood periods of American history: the struggle to overthrow slavery and establish freedom for African Americans in the years before, during, and after the Civil War. Forever Free is extensively illustrated, with visual essays by scholar Joshua Brown discussing the images of the period alongside Foner's text.

Book Description
From one of our most distinguished historians comes a groundbreaking new examination of the myths and realities of the period after the Civil War.
Drawing on a wide range of long-neglected documents, Eric Foner places a new emphasis on black experiences and roles during the era. We see African Americans as active agents in overthrowing slavery, in shaping Reconstruction, and creating a legacy long obscured and misunderstood. He compellingly refutes long-standing misconceptions of Reconstruction, and shows how the failures of the time sowed the seeds of the Civil Rights struggles of the 1950s and 60s. Richly illustrated and movingly written, this is an illuminating and essential addition to our understanding of this momentous era.
Customer Reviews:
AN EYE OPENER!!!!.......2007-08-15
As a Civil War Buff, I never read very much about Reconstruction, unless it was an appendage to a book about the Civil War or the years following th Civil War.
However, this book opened my eyes to the true facts of the Reconstruction - in painstaking detail and with much informative narrative, Eric Foner, quoting specific individuals and presenting historical facts about Afro-American conventions and gatherings -- tells us about the part that proud Afro-Americans, newly and joyfully liberated from their former slave years, met, convened, conferred and became leaders in their community -- statesmen, lawmakers and governors of towns, and VOTERS.
However, this freedom, this growth, this liberty was short lived, as President Johnson and the Democratic party of that time effectively put an end to this, not only squashing the Afro-American right to be citizens, but to amend a Constitutional Amendment to further deprive them of their rights and liberty.
The North, as well as the South was to blame for this.
Illustrations, quotes, anecdotes and supporting documentation as well as related input from the early Women Suffrage leaders make for a fascinating historical document that should be in every library and on every reading list.
An Excellent Primer on Reconstruction.......2007-06-16
Author Eric Foner's Forever Free: The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction focuses on the period of United States history from before the Civil War through the period of Reconstruction, with an epilogue that speaks to Civil Rights in the modern era. Throughout the text are six essays written and illustrated by Joshua Brown, the executive director of the American Social History Project. Five distinctive areas are highlighted throughout the text which include the following: the period before the Civil War, mainly concentrating on slavery and the lives of slaves; the Civil War itself, including Abraham Lincoln's strategies and the Emancipation Proclamation; Presidential Reconstruction with President Andrew Johnson; Radical Reconstruction directed by Congress and President Ulysses S. Grant; and the aforementioned Civil Rights in the modern era. Essays written by Brown highlight artwork and photography of the era and attempt to show the mood of the print media with regards to racism and the struggle to integrate American society. Noteworthy is the fact that the book was written in the politically correct times of the early twenty-first century when blacks are described as African-Americans, though Caucasians are described as whites and other ethnic groups like Asian-Americans are described as Chinese.
The life of the average slave is correctly described as dismal throughout the opening chapters. "The Peculiar Institution," as it is called, focused on plantations where slave labor "...was far more demanding than in household slavery, and the death rate among slaves much higher." Descriptions of slavery permeate the text, even listing the hardships slaves endured while being transported to the United States from Africa. One such passage states that the decks on the ships were "`...only 18 inches, so that the unfortunate human beings could not turn around, or even on their sides...and here they are usually chained to the decks by their necks and legs.'"
Battles and atrocities of the war itself are not mentioned in much detail; rather the political battles are the point of focus. On the opening page of the text, General William T. Sherman's "March to the Sea" is described thusly: "Less than three weeks earlier, Sherman, at the head...had captured the city [Savannah] completing his March to the Sea, which cut a swath of destruction...." Not mentioned is the mayhem and criminal behavior exerted by his army which most historians regard as fact. Although many believe the Civil War was exclusively about slavery, Foner does point out that even Lincoln was slow to embrace emancipation and could not support a biracial living arrangement post-war with black leaders. He suggested emigration to Central America or the Caribbean and in December 1861 "...signed an agreement with a shady entrepreneur to settle former slaves on an island off the coast of Haiti." Moreover, the Emancipation Proclamation, "...perhaps the most misunderstood important document in American history," does not have a purpose. Due to Constitutional constraints, it only freed slaves who were held in areas controlled by the Confederacy. It did not free slaves in Border States that did not secede from the Union but still practiced slavery.
Following the surrender of Confederate forces in April 1865, the period termed "Presidential Reconstruction" began in 1865 and ran until 1868. This was President Andrew Johnson's, "...promise of a quick restoration of the Union... [and] a return to normality...." Since Johnson was a Southerner and a true federalist, not much changed under his leadership. Johnson's failures led to a period known as "Radical Reconstruction" and lasted until 1877. This tumultuous period was "...the only attempt by a national government in league with emancipated slaves to fashion an interracial democracy from a slave society." During Radical Reconstruction, three Constitutional amendments were passed; the President of the United States was impeached for the first time in the nation's history; and the radical group named the Ku Klux Klan was formed. Furthermore, the federal government gained the ability to override states' rights with regards to the principle of equal civil rights.
Forever Free concludes with an assessment of the failure of the Reconstruction era, saying that blacks briefly left the servitude of slavery, then quietly returned, being only slightly better off than before. Segregation and discrimination still remained throughout the country, but was especially strong in the south. This failure to properly develop the country in a biracial way has caused many of the issues that are still faced by the United States, including segregation that lasted until the 1960s and discrimination that still exists to this day. The author attempts to show that the failures of Reconstruction are the causes of racial tensions and the reasons for failures of blacks to attain equality. Unfortunately, he fails to hold the black community accountable for some of its own shortcomings, like the high out-of-wedlock birthrate, the greater occurrences of fatherless homes, and the increasing high school dropout rate. The "Second Reconstruction" of the mid-1960s was abandoned just as the first Reconstruction was due to economic and political necessity with still more work to be done.
Overall, one cannot help but feel that Reconstruction was an abysmal failure and that many whites in the South were outright racists. It is difficult to imagine how another civil war did not take place, albeit on a smaller scale, during the two years immediately following the cessation of hostilities based upon the climate that existed in the South. Although Forever Free details events during the almost twenty year period from the beginnings of the Civil War to the end of Reconstruction, very little is written about that is positive. Further, fuller explanations of certain events are not included. For example, as mentioned earlier, Sherman's "March to the Sea" is only referred to casually without descriptions of the pure horror his army unleashed on parts of the south that might have affected the behavior by some Southerners after the war. Foner also fails to fully expand upon Andrew Johnson's impeachment, a historically significant event which led to the loss of power by the president and for all practical purposes, the country being run by Congress. This resulted in the election of another corrupt president, Ulysses S. Grant, in 1868. Finally, one is struck by the negative portrayals of black Americans throughout the period. According to Brown, there was little, if any, artwork or photographic images of blacks that did not exploit them or show them as lazy or less than intelligent. The tone of the book was negative and will lead those who are unknowledgeable about Reconstruction to believe that very little good came of it.
Emancipation, Reconstruction, and Civil Rights.......2007-04-29
Forever Free, by Eric Foner, is a condensed telling of how African-Americans went from slaves to full citizens. While not as detailed as his book on Reconstruction, or even as detailed as his Short History of Reconstruction, Foner's Forever Free does a good job introducing the reader to the struggles the freed blacks faced after emancipation in the 1860s, and the hardships they faced through a hundred years of Jim Crow and intimidation, north and south, to the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th Century.
An Introduction to Reconstruction.......2006-05-25
As a result of Ken Burns's famous television series, "The Civil War" many Americans learned about this seminal event in our history. For all its virtues, Burns's series was properly criticized for deemphasizing the role of slavery in the conflict and for not focusing on the impact of the Civil War on African Americans.
Eric Foner's "Forever Free" is part of an ambitious project designed to carry forward the Civil War story with emphasis on Emancipation an on the attempt to reconstruct the South to produce a true multi-racial society. The book is part of an ongoing effort by the Forever Free Foundation to produce a film to make the story of Reconstruction accessible and understandable to a broad audience. Foner is Professor of History at Columbia University and the author of among other things, "Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863 -- 1877 a detailed scholarly study of this controversial period. He is assisted in this book by Joshua Brown, executive director of the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning at the City University of New York. In the book, Brown complements Foner's text with six chapters of photographs, drawings and other artifacts of popular American culture illustrating the changing perception of African Americans.
Until relatively recently, many historians treating Reconstruction saw it as a tragic mistake -- as an attempt by Radical Republicans to foist corrupt governments on the defeated South dominated by unscrupulous whites and uneducated African Americans and to take vengeance on the South for the Civil War. The African American historian W.E.B. DuBois was among the first to challenge this view with his book "Black Reconstruction" and Foner, and many contemporary historians, follow in his footsteps. While recognizing the failings of Reconstruction, Foner sees it as a noble effort to end slavery and to give all Americans, white and African Americans, political and economic rights and to create, for the first time, a society truly approximating ideals of equality. Reconstruction ultimately failed due to the war-weariness and indifference of the North and to resistance and frequently terrorism within the white South.
Foner tells a complex story simply and clearly. This is not a book that breaks new scholarly ground. The book is intended for a large public which, in general, lacks a detailed understanding of our Nation's history. Foner begins with a brief discussion of slavery in the pre-War South and follows this with a discussion of the Civil War focusing on President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863), its importance and its effect. But the heart of the story lies in the Reconstruction years, as Foner describes President Andrew Johnson's conciliatory policy of Presidential Reconstruction followed by the Constitutional Amendments of the Reconstruction years and Congressional Reconstruction's attempt to give meaning to ideals of freedom and equality. The story draws upon difficult events on the national arena and on complex events in each of the Southern states. Ultimately, Reconstruction was defeated, or rather postponed, following the disputed Presidential election of 1876 and the Compromise of 1877. Foner describes the reinstitution of Jim Crow in the South which aimed to keep African Americans in subjection. An all too brief concluding section discusses the Civil Rights movement and America's ongoing struggle to secure racial equality.
The photographic commentary, both in Foner's text and in Brown's essays, adds a great deal of immediacy to the book, not the least of which derives from showing the reader some of the popular culture of the day. Many will find this unfamiliar and fascinating.
The Reconstruction era remains a too-little known and highly controversial area of our history. It will encourage the reader to engage with the topic and to think about freedom and its significance and of the promise of America. The book includes a brief bibliography for those moved to further reading and study.

Recycled text; pictures excellent.......2006-04-30
This is a rehash of Foner's earlier books on Reconstruction. Nothing new there, except that his Marxism is finally out of the closet. (His main criticism of Reconstruction is that it was not seized as an opportunity for land redistribution and the introduction of socialism in the US). The alternating chapters on photos by Joshua Brown are, in pleasant contrast, fascinating, new and well-done. Foner chapters: 0 stars; Brown chapters: 5 stars; thus average rating.

Book Description
Howard Murad, M.D., the renowned Los Angeles dermatologist, has studied the effects of the environment on skin and aging for almost thirty years. The methods he developed to counteract those effects are packed into this book's simple regimen, which will: -Smooth lines and dryness using fruit acids, such as pome-granate extract -Reverse the sun's effect on skin -Hydrate cells so skin actually becomes softer and plumper -Instruct readers on which supplements to take to help skin appear younger. Though Dr. Murad's own Murad skin care line is hugely popular and available nationwide from retailers such as Nord-stroms and Sephora and other outlets such as individually owned salons and QVC, the program in this book does not rely only on those products. Clear charts that list essential ingredients in the program for various skin types will steer readers to name-brand products at every price point at department and drug stores everywhere.

An esthetician's viewpoint...........2007-05-13
There is a lot of useful information in this book; unfortunately, Dr. Murad promotes HIS products at the expense of others. That said, this book was written by Dr. Murad and is "The Murad Method" for ageless skin. I am sure the folks who sell his line find this book helpful to those purchasing his products.
It does work.......2006-06-06
I found that the book helped break down something so complicated. When you think about all that is out there regarding skin. Q10 this and peptide that. I did not want to do botox or anything like that. I needed something that was clear. While I am not following the diet I have found great results. My skin is smoother, I don't look my age and I love it! It was really an easy commitment to make.
Don't waste your money.......2006-05-25
This is basically a commercial pitch for Dr. Murad's spas and products. Unless you are planning on buying his regime, he gives very, very scant information about how you could accomplish the program using other, less expensive products.
Don't expect an easy how-to giving you day by day advice of supplements and skin care. It's not here. I decided to buy this based on other's good reviews. Now I'm thinking that they were written by employees. I was very disappointed.
this is a good book - no subliminal marketing in my opinion.......2006-02-23
Wow. I have to say that after reading a couple of the other reviews on this book, I see that a few people missed the big picture. As a skin care professional myself, I completely understand why Dr. Murad would make the product recommendations he did in his book - it is because his are really the only formulas available right now that are 'complete' formulas to achieving healthy skin. People nowadays have a plethora of products to choose from...the challenge is, how do they choose the right products for their skin problem. Dr. Murad's approach is logical and medically sound. With the information he provides in his book, consumers will hopefully be able to make a more informed decision when it comes to choosing products for their skin. So, I am giving this book 5 stars. (I stumbled upon this book at my local library.)
Great Read!.......2005-08-13
I really enjoyed reading Wrinkle Free Forever. It has a lot of great information on not only how to treat wrinkles but how to overall just BE healthy. Dr. Murad talks about inclusive health, The Water Principle, and protecting your skin from environmental invaders. It's a simple read and not full of long medical terminology. I totally related to everything Dr. Murad spoke about and his recommendations all made sense!

Useful and challenging.......2006-04-21
In the beginning I bought it because other readers' comments and when I got it I thought it was for elderly women with nothing to do. I was wrong. The book has plenty of good ideas, associations and it presents the problem of clutter from an inner point of view, that means, not just as a physical problem to cope with. As I was reading it I put some sentencens down and now I tend to repeat them as mantras.
On the other hand, the book could have been printed in much smaller fonts and, at the end, it tends to repeat some ideas.
Not one of my favorites...........2006-02-12
Book is shy 200 pages and large print which if in a standard size print like most books would have been shy 100 pages, thus its a book that is over priced and short on wisdom for someone who has gotten beyond the idea of decluttering and wants valuable information on a total lifestyle change.
Also didnt like that most of the book is feedback from some people who have taken a class etc. Overall its a very cheap and sophomoric book on the subject. I returned the book for my money back.
Better books that I recommend are Organizing for the Spirit : Making the Details of Your Life Meaningful and Manageable by Sunny Schlenger, and Unclutter Your Life: Transforming Your Physical, Mental and Emotional Space by Katherine Gibson simply because both books besides being less expensive, get to the root of the problem that has begotten you clutter and disorganization in the first place. And their books also help unclutter more than where you live or your work space.
Me? Clutter free?.......2003-07-08
Just because I'm educated (J.D., M.S.W.) doesn't mean I'm organized! This book helped me get over my clutter-induced guilt and on to the freedom of orderliness (NOT an oxymoron, as it turns out!), and to do so with smiles and laughter along the way.
Sharing the Mana.......2003-06-09
I never thought of myself as a "Queen of Clutter;" rather I viewed myself as the "Keeper of Important Stuff." Only problem was, everything seemed important until I read "Love It Or Lose It"! The book's material was presented in a compassionate, yet direct, way that gave me the courage to look deeply at what was causing me to keep my clutter. It helped me realize that I was holding onto `things' from my past as if they were actually the `life' they once represented. Now I view them for what they are, release what is no longer needed, and by doing so, give myself the gift of freedom and space within my own soul that I now choose to fill with joy.
In Hawaii's culture, we believe all things are embued with sentient energy which holds our "mana," or spiritual essence, once it becomes ours. This belief made it difficult for me to 'release' certain things until LILI encouraged me to continue sharing my good and mana. Now, I rejoice knowing others are benefitting from things I still hold close but no longer need.
Mahalo, Mrs. Bedrosian and Hemphill, or thank you as we say in Hawaii, for bringing this light-hearted yet powerful `life guide' to our world. I, for one, am eternally grateful for the future space and freedom I shall enjoy!

What a great idea!.......2003-01-07
I found this book to be a quick, entertaining, well-organized, and useful resource in my quest to bring light and space to my home. It's full of practical guidance, and one of the best tips I received was the concept of trading time with friends to clear spaces, move items out of the house that never seem to make it past the garage, or run errands that are just no fun to do by myself. Most of all... it's nice to know that so many other people feel the same way about their clutter, and are facing the same issues as a result of it. Definitely a keeper, and a great gift for the clutter-challenged!

Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2007-01-21
Loved this book. So many practical ideas for getting out of debt. Especially her rapid debt repayment plan. I appreciated Mary Hunt's inspirational story for motivation. It's a very useful book!
Very impressed with the tips in this book.......2006-11-17
This is a great primer for those getting started on a path to living debt-free, living on one income, or just trying to be fiscally responsible. Hunt talks about attitudes about money that can be helpful to take on, strategies for thinking about and reducing your debt, and lists a number of weighty cheapskate tips that I found very helpful.
The only odd thing about this book is that it mentions God a number of times and suggests titheing and other activities and attitudes that have to do with God, yet it does not mention God or Christianity anywhere on the front or back cover - I don't know why. I am not a Christian and so I just skipped over these parts, but I would have liked to know that I was reading a book based on Christian beliefs before I bought it, since it wasn't just the odd mention.
Other than that surprise, this is a book I'd recommend to those new to frugality.
Practical guide to gaining control over your finances.......2006-03-27
The tile of this book is somewhat misleading - The Complete Cheapskate is not really about how to be "cheap" or get the best deal on something. In fact, the book's subtitle describes much more accurately what it is really about: "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out, and Break Free from Money Worries Forever!" In short, The Complete Cheapskate is a concise and down-to-earth guide to getting out of debt and getting one's finances in order.
Speaking from her personal experience, Mary Hunt describes the struggle with debt that she had gone through. Even though it was a difficult time for her and her family, she was able to overcome it and learned a lot in the process. Since then, she has dedicated her career to helping people in similar situations overcome their dependence on material things and get their financial lives on track. This book outlines her step-by-step process for getting control over one's finances.
It all begins with developing the right attitude towards money and spending, and being committed to this new financial journey. Then comes the hard part: getting a realistic assessment of your debt situation and begin taking some basic steps to get out of it. After that, Mary tackles subjects ranging from Giving, to Saving, to starting a "Freedom Account" (a powerful concept that, once applied, will help you always be prepared for any unexpected expenses, as well as save for some fun things). She then helps you figure out how to live within your means by using some basic budgeting, and offers a long list of money-saving tips in a separate chapter. Once you have committed to getting out of debt and taking control over your finances, Mary's system is easy to apply. She outlines very specific steps and given gives you examples of worksheets that you can put together (either with Excel or pen and paper), so that it's easy to manage and does not require much time - until after a while, it becomes your second nature. The bottom line is, this system works, provided there is commitment and strong desire to change.
I can speak from personal experience that I have used many of Mary's principles to get a handle on my financial situation. Even though I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Finance, I needed some help tackling my spending habits and large amounts of student debt. I began my journey towards financial freedom almost nine months ago, having read Dave Ramsey's book. While I came across Mary's writings only relatively recently, I saw a lot of similarities in the overall approach and philosophy - and I have already taken several of her concepts and tools and incorporated them into my personal financial management process.
The Complete Cheapskate is a short book. The actual content is only 169 pages (including about 35 pages of money-saving ideas); the rest of the book (another 60-some pages) contains some of "The Best of Cheapskate Monthly Articles" and some more money-saving ideas (suggested by readers of Mary's column). I didn't find these additional materials quite as engaging as the rest of her book - mostly because they seem neither complete in themselves nor do they fit with the overall narrative. It seems that they were thrown into the book almost as an afterthought, just to bulk up the content.
Overall, I would recommend reading this book to someone who is struggling with debt and cannot see a clear way out. Even if you've already read other books on the subject, it may just be that this is the one that will make it all "click" for you. I would also recommend it as a useful reading for someone who is not in debt (yet), but who would like to know how to avoid it in the future. It is both a cautionary tale and a user's manual to one's finances, and its common-sense approach can be applied by almost anyone. The best thing is, it's a quick read and can be easily put into practice, even if you just rent it from the library (like I did). This way, you will already be on your way to becoming a "cheapskate". (Sorry, Amazon!)
Very helpful tools.......2006-02-01
I found that this book has very helpful tools to manage money. Some of the ideas aren't applicable to my situation, but overall the ideas were good ones and the samples of the spreadsheets were useful. A lot of it is common knowledge, but it helps you to implement the changes in a way that works for you.
A well-defined plan of action..........2005-08-10
This book provides a well-defined plan of action that is very doable. From her own experience, Ms. Hunt has proven the effectiveness of her plan. It is also nice to see a "how-to" book written by someone that has "walked the walk" before she "talked the talk."
This is the second book of Ms. Hunt's that I have purchased, however, I have discovered that each of her books pretty much contains the same information.

Book Description
Emotional eating is by far the most common cause of weight gain. As you'll learn in Shrink Yourself, all the diets, exercise regimens, and surgical procedures in the world will not free you from this vicious cycle. Why? Because they don't address your reasons for overeating.
Shrink Yourself, a supportive, unique, and ground-breaking guide written by a world-renowned therapist who has helped thousands of people lose weight and keep it off, gets to the heart of the problem. Shrink Yourself gives you the equivalent of eight expensive sessions with the best weight-loss therapist in the world for the price of a single book.
Yo-yo dieting is an endless cycle. You diet and lose weight. Then you eat "comfort food" - that piece of cake, huge bowl of ice cream, or enormous bag of potato chips you devour to smother your feelings of fear, anxiety, stress, anger, boredom, loneliness, frustration, or so many other feelings. The comfort doesn't last long. Soon you feel guilty for breaking your diet, so you displace the guilt with another helping. Before long, you're unpacking your fat clothes again and berating yourself for your lack of willpower. Then, warily, you contemplate the next diet.
With Shrink Yourself, renowned psychiatrist and emotional eating expert Dr. Roger Gould offers the first step-by-step analysis of the connection between eating and emotion. Dr. Gould explains why the connection is so powerful and shows you how to break the emotional eating cycle, shed all your excess pounds, and keep them off for good. Based on Dr. Gould's unique method and his work involving more than twenty thousand people, this revolutionary eight-session program reveals that your uncontrollable hunger is connected to feelings of powerlessness in your life. You'll discover the five layers of powerlessness and you'll learn how to recognize and cope with each of them by:
- Conquering the feeling phobia
- Waking up from the food trance
- Challenging your self-doubts
- Defeating your defeatism
- Creating real safety
- Dealing positively with anger
- And more
Food may be a relatively inexpensive "over-the-counter tranquilizer," but its side effects can be devastating. So before you rush to try the next fad diet or start binge eating after a stressful day, ask yourself, "Is this the way I want to live?" Then read Shrink Yourself and learn how to take control of your emotions to slim down permanently? without ever counting calories again. You can truly shrink yourself.

Great Help!.......2007-10-02
I have struggled with Emotional Eating all my life. Even after loosing 208 pounds following gatric by-pass surgery this will still an issue for me. This book truly touchs the heart of the matter and has enabled me to begin the healing process!
Puts It Together.......2007-09-30
This is a great book to help you really understand your specific triggers for emotional eating. I have found it especially helpful when used with his online course which you can find on his website.
The course adds substantially to personalizing my experience. I was at a party the other day and it was so clear what the dynamics were that would cause me to overeat as I'd read the book and also gone through practice scenarios of my own on the online course.
I've read tons of books like this - this one was by far the best. Read Water with Lemon by Zonya Foco (Water With Lemon: An Inspiring Story of Diet-free, Guilt-free Weight Loss!) either before or after and also The Craving Cure(The Craving Cure) and The Right Weigh by Rena Greenberg (The Right Weigh: Six Steps to Permanent Weight Loss) - they really helped me put my emotional eating in perspective spiritually, emotionally, and with a practical approach.
It's really working well for me, thank goodness. Used by More Than 100,000 PeopleASIN:0071477365 Lickety-Split Meals: For Health Conscious People on the Go!
Question your motives.......2007-09-14
Unbelievably fantastic book. Really makes you examine your motives every time you go to put something in your mouth. Initially it is a great 'diet' (eating less than you could)because you really aren't sure if it is for the right reason, so you don't eat. I have no idea anymore if I am hungry or not, because I am starving often. But I have stopped myself from eating by waiting to see if the hunger passes as well as NOT eating when in an emotional state. Once you get sick of the word eat and food, replace it with the word, drugs, alcohol or whatever else someone does as a defense mechanism and this book could fix or atleast shed light on the whole worlds problems!
Breakthrough!.......2007-09-10
Italian and jewish parents and grandparents and wonderful cuisine ensured stuffing my face for the good life and good moods. The idea was to leave the table unable to eat more! NOT GOOD! Dr. Gould made the connection for me between a sense of emotional well being and gluttony. Broke the habit painlessly! Less time working it off in the gym. Lower blood pressure! Terrific breakthrough for all of us who love food and robust eating.

Good insight as to why you may overeat.......2007-09-07
Book provides good insight as to why you may overeat, or eat too much of the wrong things. Most useful to me has been the point about pausing before you eat to think about why you are eating. At the end of the day though, as with most diets or programs that purport to aid with weight loss or management, the effort is up to the individual.

Stuff, stuff and more stuff! Facing towering piles of your own accumulated artifacts, all out of storage space, and feeling you can never get organized and out from under it?!? Here's a common sense book about how to organize and do away with the unnecessary stuff in your life, create space and feel terribly virtuous about it at the same time! Do you know anybody who doesn't need this book? I don't.

Customer Reviews:
comic book.......2007-03-31
I found this book more of a comic book then a to help book. More stuff was humor than help hints. Would not recommend for someone seriously wanting to declutter.
Frivolous but Compelling.......2005-08-29
First, let's be blunt. Aslett got a free book out of the letters and emails sent to him by fans of Clutter's Last Stand. This book has very little Aslett and very little practical advice other than "toss it." It consists of personal stories of being a prisoner of clutter, the wilder the better.
That said, if you want to feel massively superior to people who've saved sixteen years' of National Geographics, the entire contents of the city dump, or a barn full of fluorescent light fixtures, this book is a hoot. Once you've started decluttering, read this book during your drink breaks. It's easy to put down, thanks to all the short sections, and the vision of not being like these people will keep you going.
A clutterholics dreambook.......2003-03-13
Here it is - a book cluttered with clutter comments. Kinda thin on the help, but heck! what are you going to do when all those junkies get rid of their stuff or want to share how their life doesn't go well because of all their junk! Don turns their comments into cash and sells it back to us! He's not dumb, and he doesn't have to have his file clutered after he keeps cluttering up more books about clutter. Too much clutter? Buy all his books and let them clutter your life! I feel I got taken by the cutiesies! OK one more piece of clutter to get out of my life!
Inspiring!.......2003-03-11
I thought this book was excellent! Don Aslett has a lively, easy to read style. The book is a compilation of testimonies from people who have either a problem with clutter or who have finally overcome their problem with clutter. It is inspiring, interesting and helpful.
I just about died laughing!!.......2002-03-21
I love this book!! It is full of stories that people sent Don about their experiences. Oh My Goodness, I laughed so hard I cried!! And then I started dumping junk FAST!! I didn't want my mother to read my high school diary or know that I kept broken tongue depressors from childhood imunizations!!
If the normal "dump your junk" books just don't work for you, try this one!! It will entertain and scare you into getting rid of the junk in you life.

Funny and Motivating!.......2006-04-01
I love this book!! It really makes you want to jump in and start decluttering. It is funny and he knows how to relate to the reader.
I try to reread this book before every spring cleaning!
What a Treasure!.......2006-03-11
This book is my ticket to the orderly and uncluttered life that has been eluding me. It's not only effective, but also well-organized, besides being entertaining to read, because of the way the author presents his material. I have bought an additional copy as a gift (for someone who asked to have it!), and I know she will be happy with it, too.

Not worth the time.......2007-05-13
This is a small book with very little content. I did not read anything that would change my life in any way.

Have you become locked into a life that really doesn't satisfy you anymore...if it ever did? Do you dream about a different lifestyle that would be more fulfilling than just day-to-day existence? This book will help you break out of your routine, hum-drum, and ho-hum stress-filled survival mode and into a much more rewarding experience.

The Five Secrets is a combination of advice and insight from a helpful friend, admonition and chiding from someone who cares, and a workbook to define your dream and design how you'll achieve it.
You can easily read through this entire book in one sitting, and you should. Then go back and read it again and again more carefully. Each time you read it, you'll discover something new. He's got a secret! Five, in fact........2003-09-10
I've been subscribing to Pat Lynch's online column for several years. As a writer, I have been drawn to his powerful use of language. As a human being, I have been drawn to his ability to make me think and feel, and do something differently than I would have done it before. So, when I got my copy of "The Five Secrets," I eagerly took it out of the box, knowing that he would soon be taking me out of my box. Out of my box of not believing in myself, into a world of faith and courage and kindness. With his five secrets, he compassionately guides us back to ourselves. And, in the process, he passionately and openly shares his own heart, splashed across the page. Thanks, Pat. We needed this! Now, we've all got a secret. Five, in fact.
You are the best, go for it.......2003-09-04
I live in England UK and am fortunate to have a copy of this wonderful book. The Five Secrets by Pat Lynch really teaches one how to think "Out of the Box" and achieve your dreams, whether it be in business or the same principles can apply to in my case 'sport'.
I train at ice dance, had a bad accident which destroyed my confidence, it has been hard to regain it. After reading "The Five Secrets" my skating instructor commented on how much my skating had improved as I was 'going for it' rather than holding back. Thank you Pat for helping me achieve my lifetime ambition.
A great book which everyone should read and continue to refer to
Realizing Your Own Strength..."The Five Secrets.".......2003-08-20
Does America need another self-help book right now? It does if it's as clear, energized and thoughtful as "The Five Secrets."
Pat Lynch combines a straightforward message with a relentless drive to motivate the reader. He refuses to let you get away as he keeps pushing home his message. That message centers on people realizing their own strength; their own power to take control of their lives.
Throughout my reading of the book I kept taking deep breaths and saying "Yeah!" The simple but undeniable truths Lynch writes about will stay with me.
