3 out of 5 stars This is where Go starts to get hard.......2006-10-03

This review is very general and it not intended to address specific concepts within the book.

The first two volumes of the series were quite good because 1) They dealt with basic concepts that beginners can understand, and 2) the author's writing style is well-suited for beginners who want to learn with minimal pain.

This third volume was definitely a case of diminishing returns for me. It isn't that what is said in this volume is unimportant, but the topics dealt with in this volume are not as intuitive. Moreover, once you reach a certain level, you are probably better off reading books that are totally devoted to specific topics, such as the opening, life and death, and tesuji.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2005-08-19

For the beginners, like myself, the book is fantastic! As a matter of fact, the whole series is brilliant: Janice Kim and Jeong Soo-hyun start with the explanation of the game's rules, and step by step walk you through the principles of its strategy and tactics. In this particular volume, three really-played games are reviewed with dozens of comments 'why-this-play-now-but-not-the-other-one', so after a wile you feel go is not anymore a dark jungle full of white (if you are just playing black) or black (if vice versa) monsters, like it used to be before, but a very logic stream of causes and consequences arising from a particular play.
Very useful are the problems at the end of each book or even each chapter, again, with very detailed answers and descriptions why the hell 'A' but never ever 'B'!
Absolute must for every beginner getting addicted to the game of go with, perhaps, one remark: when the say after reading all the books in the series you are ~10kyu, they are much too optimistic :-). At least - not on IGS. But never mind!
So, enjoy it. It really pays back!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect entry to upper kyus (20-15) and good refreseher for everyone else.......2005-08-04

Its rather surprising that the authors were able to condense so many useful proverbs into a single volume. The explanations are carefully thought out and explained, and they aren't based off impossible or labyrinthian setups, but positions than can and, as I have seen myself, arise in actual games. The self-testing section at the end of the book is precise and helps to reinforce the lessons presented, and yet simple enough that you don't require a board of your own to lay the problems out on. And even upper level players(10-8 kyus) would find this book useful as refresher. It was quite surprising how many knee-jerk reactions even I had that were brought up at some point.

The only problem I had with this book were the games they chose to review to illustrate the points made earlier in the book. While the games were simple and straightforward, thats all they were. Quite honestly, if the author did not say at the beginning that these were professional level games, I would not have believed that they were. But as far as criticisms go, that pales in comparison to how much good this book can do for players.

4 out of 5 stars very basic; solid.......2005-03-24

I've been playing Go for two years, and I used to have weekly lessons from a high-ranking amateur. I read the first two books of Janice Kim's series when I was just beginning, and that was the right time.

I should've read this one at that time too. It's very basic. I agree with the reviewer who complained that the content was pretty slim. That's the point of view of a player with a bit of experience. If you're a beginner with a few extra bucks, this should be helpful for you. But if you're clever, or if you have some experience on the 19x19 board, I recommend skipping this one and moving on to "Basic Techniques of Go" or "The Second Book of Go." Those two books cover the same information, plus a lot more.

I read this book in one day, without a board, and there are only about two things I want to review later.

Tonight I'll start volume four...

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Read.......2002-08-20

Having worked through the first two volumes of this series, the enterprising young player is anxious to start playing Go and stop reading about it. In addition, for some time and many players, that is sufficient. Certainly one has learned enough to live happily in the moment of conflict and capture, more than many players do. With concentration, comes a fair share of the victories and steady improvement.

Alas, this is not a perfect world. Go is a vast game, and few ever completely understand it. If a player is to improve, a time will come when he or she must study the game itself if they are to develop. Subtle bad habits of play become self destructive when facing stronger players. These latter also seem to have a magical ability to pull victory out of despair even under handicapping.

Now is the time to address the third volume 'The Dragon Style.' Despite the magical title, the purpose of this volume is to make a player aware if good and bad habits, and to begin to teach the fundamentals of strategy. To learn now one must begin to read. Read positions, read the games of others, sometimes even try to read minds. The majority of this book walks a play through several games in detail, carefully explaining the purposes of each move.

Really, this isn't hard work. With enough information to understand what each player is trying to do much can be learned from this study, It is, after all, far easier to see the whole game when it isn't the one you are playing right now. The problem, of course, is finding a source of games that are annotated intelligibly and enjoyably. Janice Kim and Jeong Soo-hyun provide some good examples. These will provide the basis for studying others.

There is nothing especially draconic about the 'dragon style.' It is sensible, thoughtful play that considers everything. Of course, this is easier to say than to accomplish. This book provides a good start along the path of reading games. If it has a failing, it is that it does not provide a list of good sources of games for study. Many are available, but not all analyses are suitable for all levels of players.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss any book in this series.......2007-10-05

I've been a mother for 16 years and I've never had all of my children read and fight over the same book before. But then my husband started reading the first book at the same time as my 12-year old who didn't want anyone else to read it while he was reading it. My 12-year old started hiding it under his pillow but his brother found it and was sneaking reads too. All three fought over who got to read when all the way to the end of the fourth book.

5 out of 5 stars The Titans and Dragons emerge from the shadows!.......2007-09-29

In the Service of Dragons is the first book of the Dragon series. The book picks up after the historic decision of King Andrew to support the elves and begins to tell the story of how the men of the kingdoms work to save the elves of the reaches. It is in this book that you get a better sense of the fantastic world Robert Stanek has created and all the wonders it contains. This book is pure excitement from the opening to the end, and I enjoyed every moment of it.

If you have been resisting the Kingdoms and Dragons books because they sound like a Tolkien wannabe, don't-read it now. Although the parallels are obvious--a world of elves, men and fantastic creates--the author is not out to mimic Tolkien but to offer a vastly different vision of what a magical world would be like. In Tolkien's world, the alliances between peoples is what saves the day, in Stanek's world, the alliances of old have shattered, men and elves were more often foes than friends, and the world was once ruled by dragons and titans.

For all its darkness, author Robert Stanek has crafted an extremely well-paced and exciting book. From the first page on, you won't be able to put it down until you find out what is happening and whether Xith will be able successful in his attempt to save Vilmos from himself.

As this is the first volume of the quartet, surely there is more excitement to come.

1 out of 5 stars no details and no plot.......2007-09-19

The writing style in this book is so sparse that every page is a struggle to visualize what is going on. There are no vivid character descriptions and details of important places are often just noted by colors such as the "grey castle" or a "red mountain". Also very frustrating is the lack of plot. I mistakenly ordered this thinking it was a part of a stand alone series - but there are 4 books before this one (the kingdom and elves series). You would think that surely something must be going on at this point, but nothing seems to be happening. Most of the book consists of boring dialog from characters who all sound alike. The lack of imagination with the titles of the sequels (In Service of Dragons Book 2, In Service of Dragons Book 3, etc.) gives a strong hint on how dull this book is.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter eat your heart out!.......2007-05-25

It's not Harry Potter and it's not meant to be. Robert Stanek has created a marvelous story that has captured readers from all age groups. His writing has been compared to JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and CS Lewis. He deserves all the success he's achieved. I've read all 4 Kingdoms books and couldn't wait to start the Dragon books.

You have only to read the first few scenes of this book to get a sense of the sweeping majestic scope of these stories. The author captivates the imagination with prose that draws his readers in like few others can. While the stories have some standard fantasy elements, the author uses them in fresh, innovative ways, and also introduces much that is new.

For me, the many characters are some of the best aspects of the story. In this one, I enjoyed getting to know some of the other characters better, especially the young prince. The world ofthe story seems a character. The world has multiple levels of reality called UnderEarth, MiddleEarth, and OverEarth. UnderEarth is a place without sun, moon or stars. It has bloodred skies and is a dark place where many strange creatures dwell. MiddleEarth is the place of the kingdoms and reaches. It is where men and elves live. OverEarth is place of the skies. It exists above the clouds of the kingdoms and reaches.

This is most definitely a great read. Read the sample and see for yourself.

There is no doubt Robert Stanek is an excellent writer on par with some of the best in any genre. That is unquestionable - all you have to do is read the samples provided to see this. He has a strong voice, and a unique style. Read the sample judge for yourself.

As I read the opening scenes, I was drawn immediately into a bold new fantasy world of titans, giants, and men. I knew immediately this book was for me and could see why Tolkien and Rowling fans enjoy this author's writing. The author has a strong command of language. He paints scenes with a master's stroke and his books have many strong characters.

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-30

This book is not quite as interesting as the others, but still enjoyable. The band of villains, in general, would not find having lunch with The Joker disagreeable.

The fire and brimstone preacher fastest gun in the world guy discovers, much as Gallandro did with Han Solo in Brian Daley's trilogy, that speed isn't everything.

I didn't know how she would get out of that execution/shootout scene, so O'Donnell continues to pull marvelous rabbits out of hats.

Once it was down to 2 on 10, rather than 2 against 20 odd, the bad guys were outnumbered.

3 out of 5 stars "Yes, he's pretty good for a vicar. Who gets first crack at him?".......2006-12-29

"Dragon's Claw" is the ninth book in the Modesty Blaise series, and was first published in 1978. This book, like the others in the series, features Modesty Blaise and her loyal sidekick Willie Garvin in an action thriller, pitted against some really nasty bad guys.

The story is fairly satisfying. The bad guys are kidnapping and killing people from the world of the arts for a reason that is unusual but not totally farfetched. Modesty, while sailing a yacht single-handed from Australia to New Zealand, rescues Luke Fletcher, a world-renowned painter. Luke Fletcher had disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea several months previous and was presumed dead - how in the world did he end up adrift in a dingy in the Tasman Sea?

This rescue leads to a relationship between Modesty and Luke, and eventually to a hunt for the bad guys, and finally to an action-packed climax on Dragon's Claw Island. A high point is a Wild West style duel with handguns between Modesty and the Reverend Uriah Crisp, a gun-toting minister who has proven that he is faster on the draw than Modesty!

The quotation that heads this review, "Yes, he's pretty good for a vicar. Who gets first crack at him?", is Modesty's remark after Uriah Crisp has demonstrated his prowess with a six-shooter, and Modesty and Willie have been told that they are scheduled to die in duels against the Reverend Crisp. (page 235)

Although I found the story satisfying, I also found it a bit contrived. If one bothers to analyze the plot in the last four chapters one realizes that there are several more obvious ways in which Modesty and Willie could have escaped from captivity on Dragon's Claw Island. But then the story wouldn't have had such a nice climax, so we accept the contrived story as a minor negative point.

A more serious problem is the portrayal of the bad guys, in particular Beauregard Browne (with an "e"). Peter O'Donnell was obviously striving for an interesting combination of an upper class Englishman with campy/gay tendencies (and frilly lilac shirts and painted toenails) who was still a deadly and formidable opponent for Modesty and Willie. For me it doesn't quite work. I find Beauregard Browne (with an "e") more silly than scary. A thriller depends to a large extent on the nastiness of the bad guys, and this is the weakest aspect of "Dragon's Claw".

Otherwise the book has the usual mix of very positive elements found in all of the Modesty Blaise books. This includes the unusual relationship between Modesty and Willie, the intelligent and humorous slant on things and Modesty's and Willie's inventiveness and their amazing fighting skills.

The book is very well written, and Peter O'Donnell has a great command of the (British) English language and a wonderful way with words. Consider the following sentence:

"There was an almost unlimited number of vexations she (Mrs. Rigby) found insupportable, such as abstract art, amateur psychologists, association football, and Australian cricketers, to name only the first few alphabetically, but when she declared her inability to tolerate these affronts, she invariably described them as unique in this respect." (page 80)

In conclusion, not one of the best Modesty Blaise books, but still recommended, even after all these years. If you've never read a Modesty Blaise book then do yourself the favor of starting from the beginning of the series, both because there is a developing background to the stories and because the first six books in the series are the best.

4 out of 5 stars Chasing the Dragon.......2000-10-23

You can't keep a good girl down, and Modesty's the best. Lose her in the middle of the ocean, alone on a yacht and you can bet she'll find trouble. This time round a rescue at sea pitches Modesty into the hands of some daring Art Thieves. Who is their mysterious backer, and where is the loot being stored? Leave it to Modesty and Willie to turn the tables on the bad guys and come out (relatively) unscathed. They even have time to practise their latest hobby in the middle of a fight for survival. That takes dedication. Dragon's Claw is hard to find, harder than most Modesty titles, but go find it: you'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars No Modesty involved.......2000-06-08

Peter O'Donnell has done it again! I love his Modesty stories, and this book just made me want more. Willie Garvin and Modesty are the ultimate daring duo. No matter the situation, they always come through and with style and class....and of course with their customary wit and humor. Keep up the good work and Please Please write more!

5 out of 5 stars The best book in the WORLD!.......2006-12-09

If you are ever bored, pick up this series, and start reading. Usually when I read books, I read in short segments. But when I picked up the first one, it was different. When I started, I couldn't stop until the end of the fourth one! It is action packed, and has so many adventures. Plus, it is suspenseful! I highly recomend this to EVERYONE!

5 out of 5 stars I love In the Service of DRAGONS!.......2006-10-19

This book was amazing. I started reading this series because the kid across the street was already reading it. So then I picked up the first one and kept going and going It's like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars all rolled into one. It's really entertaining and I couldn't stop reading. I read all 4 in 2 weeks. I'd recommend this for anyone who likes fiction.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN.......2006-10-17

All 4 dragon books are filled with mystery, suspense, adventure and action, but this is by far my favorite. I've read the Kingdoms and Dragons books about 10 times each (I'm not exagerating). These books are better than Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings combined. I liked this more than Eragon and Eldest. I love all the battles and action but nothing prepared me for this one, HOLY CRP!!!! I was glued to the book the first time I read it and totally blown away!!! This book is amazing and everyone who I've talked to says its great too! Read it you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This WAS GRREEAATT!!!!!.......2006-08-19

This Book was Great AND the best of the series. I never read anything like it. On my favorite books list this ones on the top #1. If you love adventure and you've already read Potter and Lord of the Rings, give this book a try.

    Book Description

At the culmination of their professional careers, great Oriental physicians often write books setting forth the mature versions of their clinical vision, their creations and accomplishments. Chasing the Dragon's Tail is a book in this tradition, but one that also charts a course for future explorations. Thus, while it details Dr. Manaka's clinical system in its fullest and most effective form, it is also an invitation to further investigation by one of the most inventive Oriental practitioners of the preceding generation.

The text introduces Dr. Manaka's major clinical and theoretical accomplishments by describing how the "X-signal system'' is the foundation of human topology, function, and response. In essence, the X-signal system defines qi, yin-yang, and the five phases as clinical events, just as traditional Oriental thinkers recognized these ideas through right-brain pattern recognition. While Dr. Manaka references some of the most advanced scientific thinking of our era-information theory, holographic models and new paradigms-his explanations are full of practical tests which readers can use to confirm his ideas for themselves. The core of the text is a complete description of Dr. Manaka's treatment system. This is of great importance, not only because Dr. Manaka was recognized in both Japan and China as one of the foremost practitioners of his generation, but also because the system has already proven itself adaptable to many others. It is thus a clinical manual of unique value because it describes Dr. Manaka's most important techniques: ion pumping and other root treatments, as well as his distinctive use of fire needles, channel stimulation techniques, sotai, moxibustion, and other modern Chinese and Japanese clinical developments. Beginning with a step-by-step template for formulating and confirming a diagnosis, Dr. Manaka provides the instructions necessary to apply these techniques quickly and with confidence. The text concludes with case histories and appendices that provide supporting technical details.

5 out of 5 stars East meets West on common ground.......2001-06-19

Using ideas from chaos, quantum, systems, and information theory (and many more), this book is a truly fresh and much needed perspective on TCM. The X Signal System abandons the causal theory of western biological sciences to answer the questions of TCM and effective treatment, and draws explanations and theories of energy, information exchange, and life from modern physics.

I am a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and am young in the arts, but it is clear that the foundation laid in this book will be used as a framework for western science to gain a new appreciation for Acupuncture.

We have learned much since the Huang Di and his ministers, and now with the help of Manaka, we can focus on effective treatment in modern times, as well as the classics.

    Book Description

Over-Earth is the home of dragons and titans. But don't forget about the eagle lords. Those three are the great races of Ruin Mist's past. At the dawn of the First Age, it was the titan Ky'el who gave the lesser races (men, elves, and dwarves) their freedom-at a great cost to himself and his people. Before that, the lesser races were slaves to the greater races (dragons, titans and eagle lords). Over the millennia, knowledge of Over-Earth's existence faded from the memory of the living, even that of the long-lived elves and dwarves. Most believed it was a place of myth and legend, and that it never truly existed at all. But that was before cloud-shrouded top of Solstice Mountain was revealed, and before the titans and the eagle lords returned to the lands. Now men and elves battle for the very heart and soul of the land alongside the legendary titans and eagle lords. The dark lord's reach grows and the fate of all hangs in the balance.
