Book Description
It is one of the great questions of American history--why did the Southern states bolt from the Union and help precipitate the Civil War? Now, acclaimed historian William W. Freehling offers a new answer, in the final volume of his monumental history The Road to Disunion. Here is history in the grand manner, a powerful narrative peopled with dozens of memorable portraits, telling this important story with skill and relish. Freehling highlights all the key moments on the road to war, including the violence in Bleeding Kansas, Preston Brooks's beating of Charles Sumner in the Senate chambers, the Dred Scott Decision, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, and much more. As Freehling shows, the election of Abraham Lincoln sparked a political crisis, but at first most Southerners took a cautious approach, willing to wait and see what Lincoln would do--especially, whether he would take any antagonistic measures against the South. But at this moment, the extreme fringe in the South took charge, first in South Carolina and Mississippi, but then throughout the lower South, sounding the drum roll for secession. Indeed, The Road to Disunion is the first book to fully document how this decided minority of Southern hotspurs took hold of the secessionist issue and, aided by a series of fortuitous events, drove the South out of the Union. Freehling provides compelling profiles of the leaders of this movement--many of them members of the South Carolina elite. Throughout the narrative, he evokes a world of fascinating characters and places as he captures the drama of one of America's most important--and least understood--stories. The long-awaited sequel to the award-winning Secessionists at Bay, which was hailed as "the most important history of the Old South ever published," this volume concludes a major contribution to our understanding of the Civil War. A compelling, vivid portrait of the final years of the antebellum South, The Road to Disunion will stand as an important history of its subject.

Mixed Feelings.......2007-09-19
I was a little bit disappointed because the book lacked a fair bit of context. For example, I know that a Senator from South Carolina preferred his slave concubine to his wife, but otherwise I would have to read another book to really understand what was going on. So, I appreciated the mini-biographies of the players leading up to the war, but I felt that there was a huge hole in my understanding of 1854 - 1861.
Good, but flawed.......2007-07-08
Freehling's research is quite good, but his analysis often seems flawed. Like so many Civil War researchers, Freehling generally seems to blur the distinction between what issues caused the conflict and what issues motivated Southerners to actually join the army and risk their lives in the fight. While slavery was certainly a prominent, but hardly exclusive, cause of the war, it seems to have played a relatively minor role in motivating the bulk of the Southerners who actually died fighting. Freehling's error is a common one, but it detracts from an otherwise interesting book. Still, the book is worth reading for people interested in the period -- just be sure to complement your reading with other books to get a more complete set of perspectives.
What a shame..........2007-06-06
No matter how good your research is, you get a 1 star if your writing is poor!
A Proof of Genius.......2007-05-12
Seventeen years ago Freehling's Road to Disunion Vol. I was published and we Freehling fans have been impatient for this book to come out. It has been along wait but worth it. Professor Freehling has outdone himself on Road II. If there is a problem with this book it is that you can't afford to "skip" a paragraph because you think you know all about the subject. You find a fact, a thought, or a conclusion you never thought of before. Thid book is surely the crowning jewel in Wm. Freehling's bejeweled crown. Thank you, Dr. Freehling.

Wonderful part 2.......2007-04-12
If you like Freehings Road to disunion volume I: Secessionists at bay, then you wan't be sorry getting volume II. It is written in the same style and with great analysis. You can just pick this up where you left part one. Just like volume I had many topics and events that have not been included in other antebellum histoybooks, this volume offers a lot of fresh insights about the storming 1850:s that other books miss. This book must be considered, if not the best general history of the south during theese years, one of the top 3 best. If you are interested in the pre civil war era...don't miss this book!!

Book Description
We admire these men for their greatness, but the truth is Augustine grappled with sexual passions. Martin Luther struggled to control his tongue. John Calvin fought the battle of faith with worldly weapons.
Yet each man will always be remembered for the messages he declared—messages that still resound today. John Piper explores each of these men’s lives, integrating Augustine’s delight in God with Luther’s emphasis on the Word and Calvin’s exposition of Scripture. Through their strengths and struggles we can learn how to live better today. When we consider their lives, we behold the glory and majesty of God and find power to overcome our weaknesses.
If ever you are complacent about sin, if ever you lose the joy of Jesus Christ, if ever you are dulled by the world’s influence, let the lives of these men help you recapture the wonder of God. Book 1 in The Swans Are Not Silent series.

Giants of the Faith.......2007-08-19
The books in the Swan series are taken from a conference for pastors, where Dr. Piper presents these biographies. The biographies are never meant to be exhaustic treatment, but tailored to encourage pastors.
I find these brief biographies to be so wonderful and often whet the appetite for more. One can only be encourage and motivated to do more for the Lord, having bathed the soul in these well-written, tailored sketches.
Outstanding book, outstanding series!.......2007-04-05
Incredible. This is the first book of a series of four that Piper wrote to expose this generation to some of the great saints of the past. I started by reading book three, moved to book four, just completed the first and am looking forward to diving into the second book to finish the series. This book was very powerful, enlightening and challenging. As a Reformed believer, I've grown up with a tremendous appreciation of Luther and Calvin, but knew little about the incredible influence of Augustine. As I've matured in my walk and the more I read, the more I see the fruits of Augustine's thoughts in the works of so many great thinkers and writers that followed. Piper's expose on Augustine gave me an even greater appreciation for God's sovereign grace in the life of Augustine and for how God used him like the source lake from which mighty rivers of knowledge and grace have flowed down throughout history.
I think what I enjoyed most about the book is the concept that the central theme that connected these three men was their love for God's Word - they digested it daily, they wrestled with it, they sought to squeeze out every truth that could be known about God Himself from His divine and inspired Word. Their lives were devoted to the study of Scripture and to the accurate and passionate teaching of God's Word to the people. While each lived in tumultuous times, it was amazing to read about how diligent they were with their time and how much they accomplished without any of the modern conveniences that we enjoy today.
I would highly recommend this book and the entire series to all followers of Christ to gain an even greater appreciation for God and how He has used ordinary men throughout history to accomplish extraordinary things. The books are easy to read and relatively short, but are packed with great encouragement for every believer.
Listen to the voices of Christian history..........2006-04-16
The Legacy of Sovereign Joy is Book One of John Piper's series The Swans are Not Silent. Each book of the series (of which there is currently four) collects three of the biographical lectures Piper gave at the annual Bethlehem Conference for Pastors over the past two decades. When Augustine resigned as Bishop of Hippo it was said that the "swan is silent." Piper aims to show that the swans, those in our heritage of Christians throughout the centuries, are in fact not silent.
This book expounds on the lives and thoughts of Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Calvin. It begins with an introduction about "savoring the sovereignty of grace in the lives of flawed saints." Piper explains that each of these men "had this in common: they experienced, and built their lives and ministries on, the reality of God's omnipotent grace." (18) Noting some of the flaws of each of these men, Piper believes that "the glory of God, however dimly, is mirrored in the flawed lives of his faithful servants." (37)
Each chapter is about half biography and half theological survey and averages 34 pages. There is a pattern to each chapter: after a brief introduction John Piper provides a biographical sketch and then brings out a prominent theme from author's theology. For Augustine, the theme is sovereign joy, for Luther it is sacred study, and for Calvin it is the divine majesty of the Word.
After these chapters, Piper concludes with four lessons we can learn from the "flawed saints." "1) Do not be paralyzed by your weaknesses and flaws... 2) In the battle against sin and surrender, learn the secret of sovereign joy... 3) Supernatural change comes from seeing Christ in his sacred Word... 4) Therefore, let us exult the exposition of the truth of the Gospel and herald the glory of Christ for the joy of all peoples." (143-148)
It is evident throughout the book that John Piper has done his homework; quoting often from primary texts and secondary sources. While there may be some over simplification in regard to the theological themes, Piper's points are nonetheless insightful and practical. Each chapter serves as a great introduction to the lives and thoughts of these Christian men. The Legacy of Sovereign Joy provides a stimulating resource for those looking to discover some of the motivating themes of the Reformed tradition.
Concise but comprehensive.......2005-09-15
Concise but comprehensive might sound like a contradiction but I couldn't think of any other way to describe it. John Piper really introduced me to Jonathan Edwards, and between the two of them I would say that no other author has had as much of an impact upon me in the last few years as these two. Now Piper introduces us to Augustine, Luther, and Calvin also. This is the first book in a series of three and well worth the investment. I read it in my spare time in just 1 week, have the second book ready to go, but regret not purchasing the third at the same time. Piper's strength is not only in presenting one very compelling argument about the triumph of God's grace (or "Sovereign Joy"), but to do it by presenting numerous facets of the work of Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, which are easy to follow and understand, gives an excellent overview of their lives and ministries, and which leaves you wanting to (and feeling confident of being able to) read from the original sources. Every page was a gem. Be warned though, I got about 10 pages into the book then realised my mistake ... I should have read this book with a pencil and note pad in hand! There are so many great quotes from Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, not to mention Piper himself that you'll want to write some of them down to chew over later (or file away for sermon illustrations). This is an easy read and a great introduction the some major figures in church history, not to mention excellent food for the soul. In a day when people are so biblically illiterate as well as ignorant (or contemptible) of church history, this book demonstrates that our impoverishment is foolish and unnecessary. We need more books like this! I would have given it 6 stars if I could, simply on price, readability, and content alone.
Inspiration for New Christian Leaders.......2005-04-16
As you can see by the book's subtitle, this little book has three biographical pieces on well known historical Christians. Though most Christians know the names of these men, few know any more than that. So this book serves as a useful introduction to their lives and work.
But this book offers more that just a general introduction. These essays were originally conference talks given by the author to an audience of pastors. So there is a specific theme and purpose to them beyond summary historical information. Lessons from the lives of these men are drawn out to inspire and equip a new generation of Christian leaders.
I was personally most inspired by the chapter on Martin Luther. I was greatly convicted to be more diligent in the study of God's word. But all three essays were interesting and provoked personal reflection.

ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!.......2007-07-07
Bolo is, by far, the best science fiction series I've read, and book 3 is by far the best Bolo book. When you have a book that can shake all forms of emotions out of you, you know its good, and Bolos: The Triumphant does just that! There is an element for everyone in this book. There is plenty of action (heck, what do you expect from great military SF?), but there is also a boat load of wonderful emotion that gets the tears flowing. There are even some comical moments that can get a chuckle out of you. I find it to be very hard to find a story that has the ability to weave all types of emotion and action into one without sounding farfetched or stupid, but this one combines everything into one awesome package without ever dragging. You'll cry, you'll laugh, and you'll be up all night on the edge of your seat waiting for what happens next. David Weber and Linda Evans have really hit the bull's-eye with this one; The Triumphant is worth all your time and money. It is a true masterpiece, and that is really saying something.
Get ready to Rumble!.......2002-07-29
This one contains the classic Bolo against Bolo; Wriiten by no other than David Weber. Simply captivating, obsorbing and exciting! Imagine a Bolo Novel by Weber? Buy it, read it, write a review. Enjoy!
mother, friend, brother, and a hell 'ov alot of firepower.......1997-12-09
This is probably the best bolo book, why? Supose you had a friend or mother who could recite poetry, play wargames, explore the meanings of the univers and kick out megatons of damage!! that is a bolo and in this book you will see that even a "dead" bolo can figure out a way to get the job done. An interesting point in this book is that in all but one of the stories the bolo is either massively damaged or modified to the point of being considered combat ineffective and not all stories are happy. the technical readout in the back is a great bonus. A must for any bolo fan, and anyone who believes in the power of the heart be it a Bolo, a human, or a dog gone pup.
Bolos: lancelots of the future III.......1997-07-01
This is undoubtedly the best collection of Bolo storied collected to date. Only four stories, half of themm are stories you'd find in the other anthologies. The other two shine like the sun. Little Red Hen is the story of the pioneering attempts of humanity to create a complete AI that feels emotions, and they have succeeded. I will not tell you what the main happenings in the story are because you have to read it to comprehend how masterfully it is constructed. Towards the end I actually found myself CRYING. Impossible, i tried to think to myself. It's got to be onions or mabye i stepped an a tack, but inside i knew exactly what i was crying for: LRH unit 1313 , bolo mk. 21,I(special).
Miles to go is another example of the line of distinction blurring. Thee main Bolo in this story is an experimental mk 23, eighty years old. However, she packs a huge suurprise: he former Commander was a psychotronics tech and , for lack of better words, souped up the crud out of her. She is the first Bolo to mount a brain box, an integral part of more modern bolos. Her new Commander, however han one major failing: he is in love with her. Nice problem. Read tese two if you like just about any sci-fi- you wont be dissapointed
Two for the Ladies........1997-06-10
This collection offers two extremely potent and touching explorations of the "female" psyche and combat(Little Red Hen and Miles to Go). That these psyches are housed in duralloy and packing infinite repeaters makes it all the better. These two stories in particular represent some of the finest SF I've encountered, ever
Book Description
This book has numerous first-person interviews with those individuals who lived and worked in the southern Appalachian coalfields. The people tell of their struggles through coal mine tragedies, union wars, floods, industrialization and often being at the mercy of the Federal Government. All of these events have formed Appalachia today. It has prescriptions for reform, celebrations of things that are worth preserving for the modern world, and paints a unique portrait of mountain people in their own words.
Book Description
Based on a series of fascinating What ifs posed by leading military historians, this compelling new alternate history recontructs the moments during World War II which could conceivably have altered the entire course of the Second World War and led to a German victory. Based on real battles, actions and characters, each scenario has been carefully constructed to reveal how, at points of decision, a different choice or minor incident could have set in motion an entirely new train of events altering history forever. Scenarios in this volume include the fall of Malta in 1942 and the likely consequences and the possibility of Halifax making peace with Hitler.

My Dad Wrote A Chapter In This Book!.......2007-07-22
Yes my father wrote a chapter in this book. I've never read it, but I may someday. This is his second time writing a chapter for Peter Tsouras
Interesting Alternate History.......2007-04-05
This is an interesting "what if" alternate history book. Most of the stories deal with Germany doing other campaigns other than attacking Russia. Most chapters deal with isolating Great Britain by taking Gibraltar,Malta, or Egypt and beyond.I only disliked the one chapter(that's why I gave the review 4 stars)that dealt with the battle of Kursk;it is written like a military timeline with little narrative. With that said, it is still a good read.
A top pick for military readers seeking more than fantasy speculation........2006-11-07
Peter G. Tsouras edits HITLER TRIUMPHANT: ALTERNATE DECISIONS OF WORLD WAR II provides another alternate history 'what if' collection of scenarios, this using Hitler's decisions and key changing points during the war to provide a more scholarly survey of how different circumstances could have altered the outcomes and given Hitler victory. Most such coverages come from a science fiction viewpoint - but here the analysis of battle strategy and military might makes for a top pick for military readers seeking more than fantasy speculation.

This is my preferred wedding gift to every newlywed!.......1999-06-28
I bought this book 2 years before my marriage broke up. Had my wife been a willing partner, I am sure we could have enjoyed a triumphant marriage. It is one of the best practical books I have read on relationships. I gave this book to one of this areas recognized divoce counselors and she was so impressed with its content, she hopes to use the information in it as a resource for counseling groups on saving their marriages.
Recommended for both strong and struggling marriages........1998-05-22
There are many authors who discuss their theories on what makes a strong, healthy marriage. What I especially like about "The Triumphant Marriage" is that Neil Clark Warren went directly to the "real" experts -- 100 very successful couples -- and asked them what made their marriage triumphant. The top 10 secrets each have their own chapter with practical suggestions of how to improve your marriage in that particular area. As a Christian Counselor, I am always searching for books to refer to my couples -- I have made "The Triumphant Marriage" required reading!

Historical = Very. Romance = Eh..........2007-09-23
Knight Triumphant gives the reader a story set in Scotland during the ascension of Robert the Bruce that rings true, with lots of satisfying detail. The turmoil, politics and mixed loyalties fo the time make for a solid background to the story of the Hero and Heroine. Unfortunately, although the antagonistic characters eventually come together, the process is not justified. We are not shown the chemistry between them, and indeed, there may not be any. Both are brave and admirable, but nothing of the process of their falling in love by the end of the book is mentioned. As a result, when it all came about in the end, I wasn't convinced.
The Author gave the Heroine an inordinate fondness for water; she demands a bath once a day, loves to get her feet wet and plunges into every stream she can manage to find. It became unintentionally humorous for me by the end, as if she was turning into a sponge, or some kind of frustrated mermaid. In a time when she was supposed to be a distressed captive, it made her seem self-indulgent. Indeed, this Heroine, for all of her constant, desperate attempts at escape, is certainly not motivated by suffering. The Hero and his cohorts seldom subject her to any worse abuse than locking the door to whatever room or cell she happens to be put in, and she's often put there because she herself insists on it, chafing at the reality that she's a "prisoner" of politics. She's often her own worst enemy, physically throwing herself forward into danger and conflict again and again without reason or thought, until she reminds the reader of a mindless moth, battering itself against a lightbulb.
All in all, this is a satisfying read, but the characters could have benefitted from a more carefully constructed relationship.
Terrific Story. Book 4 of a 5 part series. Read them all!.......2006-04-08
There are 5 books in this series. Reading them in order does make a difference. I've found them all to be "hard to put down." (Haven't had much sleep since I started these books! LOL.) Here is the order of the series:
Come the Morning
Conquer the Night
Seize the Dawn
Knight Triumphant
The Lion in Glory
It is definitely a must that you read "Seize the Dawn" before "Knight Triumphant." While reading "Seize," be sure to pay close attention to a loving couple by the names of "Eric" and "Margot." They make "Knight Triumphant" much more meaningful.
You will find that after reading the first few books in the series, you will want to skim through some parts of this book that repeat the history of the war and certain parts of the Graham family history. These parts are, of course, included in the stories for readers whom have not read the first books in the series. In "Knight Triumphant," these parts are short and easy to skip over. Also, the author has veered from the type of couple that she used in the first three books (a Scottish knight, and an English heiress) to make this story unique.
Knight Triumphant:
The war between Scotland and England has been a bloody battle for well over a decade. After years of fighting for their freedom, Scotland is at last feeling the triumph of winning back their country. King Edward I of England is old and his health is failing. Scotland has finally crowned their own king, Robert Bruce, and has united to fight as one people. In their new power, Scotland brings down many castles that have been taken over by the English. The one castle that they will not touch is "Castle Langley." It has been infected with a plague that has killed nearly everyone within it's walls. The English inhabitants blame the Scots who contracted the plague while at sea, then infected much of Scotland.
Eric Graham is desperate to get to his beloved wife, Margot, and their little girl, Aileen. They have been held prisoner in Castle Langley. Both have been stricken by the plague. The lady of Langley, Igrainia, is known to have knowledge of herbs for healing. Her people have cast her out of the castle, in fear that she may also become ill while nursing the countless victims. Eric finds her en-route to a safer territory. He seizes her and demands that she give him passage into Langley, as well as heal his wife and child. Igrainia has already lost her own husband to the plague, and knows that there is little she can do.
Upon entering Castle Langley, Eric and his men find that there are very few people left alive and well enough to guard it. He instantly claims the castle in the name of his king, Robert Bruce. He puts his wife in the master's chamber where he insists that Igrainia will save her. Eric sits at Margot's side as he prays for her life. While doing so, he also becomes infected. Now he is fighting for his own life. In his half- conscious state, he realizes that his wife has left this world. He is utterly devastated.
Igrainia knows how it feels to lose someone so dear. After losing her own husband, her compassion fuels her attempts to save Eric. She works tirelessly to see him through the plague that has taken hold of his body. Many people of Langley suggest that she should let the enemy invader die. But fear of retaliation by his men, and her own sense of honor, demand that she try to save him. When he revives, he is determined to find revenge against the people who took his wife prisoner. His greatest enemy is the man who imprisoned Margot, and is now trying to capture and marry Igrainia, Robert Neville. Neville wants all of the wealth that Igrainia has been left after her husband's death. He'll murder anyone who stands in his way.
Eric is angry and racked with grief. He is also afflicted with unbearable guilt as he finds himself growing to care for Igrainia. He learns that Igrainia is suffering the very same devastation. In their months together defending Langley, they progress from blaming one another for their lost loves, to giving one another a reason to hope for the future.
While reading "Knight Triumphant," you'll come to adore Eric's cousin Jamie. You'll look forward to reading his story in the 5th book, "The Lion in Glory."
Knight Triumphant.......2006-04-04
Knight Triumphant is such an amazing story. Heather Graham aka Shannon Drake never misses with her historicals. I absolutely devoured this entire series. There is only one left in the series that has yet to be published, "Queen's Lady" and I for one wish the publishers would get of their backsides and get it onto the store shelves. If you get a chance, I highly recommend reading this entire series. You won't be disappointed, a little tired from staying up late because you can't put the books down, but never disappointed.
Knight Triumphant.......2005-08-16
Shannon Drake is a marvel at what she does. She made me cry for the hero and heroine yet still want them to be together against all odds.
Brava Shannon Drake.......2005-03-05
Heather Graham, writing as shannon drake never fails to deliver her engrossing historical romances. This book was just like ever other book she has written but that is what makes her books all the more better. Knowing that when I go to buy a Shannon Drake book, I am sure to devour it from beginning to end, that's what makes an author top of the list.

The fight!.......2001-08-11
Ever thought you had to fight the Devil? This book shows that your only fight is the fight of Faith, and that Jesus has already conquered Satan for us! This book will show you where the real warefare lies. You will be set at ease knowing that the Devil has already been trampled on and that we Christians are just the "occupational army", enforcing the Devil's defeat. This book shows us not how to fight the Devil, but how to enforce his defeat in our lives.
This Book Takes You OVER, ABOVE and not BENEATH.......2001-01-10
Excellent. It helps you understand and search scriptures for proof that you are an overcomer. It teaches you to beware of extremes in teachings and movements and that EVERYTHING is to be based on, backed up, and proven by Scripture to be TRUTH. It teaches you to stand (Having done ALL TO STAND, THEN STAND). God's Word never changes, never fails, and always accomplishes. The enemy is defeated, the war is won, the fight is faith, and we are TRIUMPANT. Go and spread the Good News. This book is a must for all Christians who are determined to mature and take their position in life that Jesus paid for.
A Sound & Excellent Teaching on Demons and Our Authority.......1999-09-09
This book is a tremendous benefit to mankind, clearly outlining the makeup of human beings according to Scripture, and our spiritual and natural authority over the "flesh" and demonic forces given to us by God. I highly recommend this book to help give simple and sound understanding about the way things operate in the visible and invisible realms around us. I include this book along with several other tapes and books in a "Triage Kit" to give out in critical situations where people have little comprehension about the nature of opposing forces in their lives, and the practical Wisdom and Help that's available to them in the Word of God. It is so very understandable and positive that I often wonder why I ever spent so much time reading all those other extensively theological "scary" volumes on Spiritual Warfare, when this solid, scriptural, usable source was sitting on my bookshelf waiting to give me light and encouragement . . . I belong to The Triumphant Church!
