    Book Description

The war wasn't going well. The alien Arachnids were an enemy whose like no civilized race had ever confronted. Like some carnivorous cancer, the "Bugs" had overrun planet after planet . . . and they regarded any competing sentient species as only one more protein source. Defeat was not an option. . . . The Grand Alliance of Humans, Orions, Ophiuchi, and Gorm, united in desperate self-defense, have been driven to the wall. Billions of their civilians have been slaughtered. Their most powerful offensive operation has ended in shattering defeat and the deaths of their most experienced military commanders. Whatever they do, the Bugs just keep coming. But the warriors of the Grand Alliance know what stands behind them and they will surrender no more civilians to the oncoming juggernaut. They will die first-and they will also reactivate General Directive 18, however horrible it may be. Because when the only possible outcomes are victory or racial extermination, only one option is acceptable. The Shiva Option. And peace isn't always wonderful Once the enemy is defeated, the central governments of the Inner Worlds were anything but willing to relinguish their wartime powers. To insure that their grip on the reins of power remained firm, the bureaucrats are allowing the non-human beings of the Khanate in, while keeping the Fringe Worlds out, smugly confident that this will keep the colonial upstarts in their place. The Fringers have only one answer to that: Insurrection.

Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Summer of the Monkeys. In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy and his precious coonhound pups romp relentlessly through the Ozarks, trying to "tree" the elusive raccoon. In time, the inseparable trio wins the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, captures the wily ghost coon, and bravely fights with a mountain lion. When the victory over the mountain lion turns to tragedy, Billy grieves, but learns the beautiful old Native American legend of the sacred red fern that grows over the graves of his dogs. This unforgettable classic belongs on every child's bookshelf. (Ages 9 and up)

4 out of 5 stars Exciting ending, boring beginning.......2007-10-04

I found the beginning of this book to be quite boring. It felt like the same thing happened in practically every chapter up to about page one hundred. He would hunt, get in danger, and get out of it. Same thing every time. After that, however, it got better. More things happened like him getting in the competition, and the tragic ending. Overall it was a decent book.

1 out of 5 stars Most heartbreaking ending ever........2007-08-16

This book was great until the end. I read it as a kid in the 5th grade and enjoyed the story and the journey of the kid earning money for the dogs and his bond with them.

But, the ending is horrible. You will cry, you will be angry, and you will feel betrayed by this book forever. My husband and I still can't beleive how depressing the end is.

If you must read this stop before the last couple of chapters. Then imagine the dogs living a happy long life by the fireplace.

5 out of 5 stars Where the Red Fern Grows.......2007-08-06

This book is great for anyone who has ever lost a dear pet. This novel explores the adventures of a boy and his dogs; dogs which he remembers well into adulthood. The story is a real tear-jerker.

5 out of 5 stars Where The Red Fern Grows.......2007-07-09

Everyone who has ever had a faithful dog should read Billy's story at least once in his or her lifetime. It's an ageless tale that touches the heart and mind.

Ten-year old Billy lived in the Ozark Mountains with his parents and three younger sisters. The family was extremely poor, as were most of their neighbors at that time, and could only afford the bare necessities of life. Billy's dream of having a pair of coonhounds of his own seemed to be only that until he found a resourceful way to earn the money for himself.

For two long years, Billy trapped and sold animal pelts until he had finally saved enough money to finance his lifelong dream. With his grandfather's help, he ordered two pups and then walked several miles to bring them home. That's when the real adventures began.

If the story is beginning to sound familiar, it should. "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls is an unforgettable classic that has been enjoyed for generations.

So where does the red fern come into the story? You'll just have to read it for yourself, and don't be surprised if you hear the distant bawling of a couple of dogs who have tree'd a `coon each time you open the book.

It's just Little Ann and Old Dan, for they've never really left these Ozark hills.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it for my son after reading it myself in my younger days........2007-06-08

Maybe only country boys can appreciate it, but I thought it was a simple, yet great story, timeless.

Marty Isham and David McLaren provide an in-depth description of one of America's important early all-weather jet interceptors. Fully illustrated with photographs, charts and tables, the reader is given the full history of this great fighter. From early development as a run off from the F-80 shooting Star to a stand alone All weather Interceptor credited with destroying several communist aircraft in the night skies over North Korea, the story of this great fighter is revealed. Perhaps the highlight of this aircraft's military career is revealed when Isham and McLaren discuss the F-94 when it served numerous Air National Guard units throughout the United States. This book is a must for all aiviation historians and especially plastic model airplane builders who focus on early jet aircraft to have in their collection.

1 out of 5 stars Starfire (Stony Man).......2007-07-17

I have the whole collection of Stony Man and have all the Able Team & Phonix Force books. The currant writer made several mistakes as to the personal weapons team members carry and their personality. The book was boring and hard to follow. This edition by far was the worst that I have read so far of the Stony Man series.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2007-05-06

First, I have read every Executioneer, Able Team, Phoenix Force, Mack Bolan & Stony Man book from #1 to now so I feel I know what I like.
I found STARFIRE to be so cut up with bouncing from one set of characters to another that it hardly made sense. Not only bounceing between Able Team and Phoenix Force, but several groups of "those that will soon be killed". It reminded me of someone who bought a medium size pizza to divide among 25 people. On top of that, there was so much useless verbage thrown in, sometimes right in the middle of a battle, it made the action hard to follow. The plot, if there was one, was almost impossible to determine what was going on, and who was the person at the bottom of it all and above all; why?
Take out about 150 pages of useless tripe and verbage, condense the action, follow a story line to an obvious stopping point before switching to the other set of characters and put it all in a 200 page book; it would have been much better.
When I finally finished the book, I felt that instead of paying for the right to read it, I should have been paid to put up with the mish-mash of characters, plots and unknown beginnings and reasons why so many people were getting killed. It seemed like the main point of the book was to see how fast Able and Phoenix could kill people in one place then be moved to another so they could kill some more. And also to see how close they can come to being killed, but by some miracle, survive almost unscathed.
If the future Stony Man books are in the same vein, there will be one less book I will have to but and read each month as I will stop wasting my time on this level of writing.

    1 out of 5 stars Children's book, Children's book, Novel, Fiction, tripe.......2007-08-23

This is NOT historically correct, not a report of facts, it is in fact a novel, and not a historically correct novel, and it is aimed at children, not adults. If you are adult and think this is some kind of additional information on Ishi...take your money that you would spend on this and throw it out the window, you will be much happier. Not even close to reality.

    3 out of 5 stars It's a historical novel.......2007-02-04

I was disappointed to find that I had bought the wrong book. "Ishi: Last of His Tribe" is not a variant title for "Ishi: Between Two Worlds". This is a novelisation of Ishi's story aimed at younger readers, and one where Yahi culture is rather heavily idealised. I was looking for some solid anthropology, which, I suppose, is to be found in the other book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good action.......2006-11-30

I liked this book, because firstly this book is a true story, and I was very suprised that a true story would be so good. This book has a lot of details, and the author tries to tell you the sounds that animals and nature makes. He also uses the Yahi tribe words telling you the names of things. The author also drew some pictures when the part of the book was very complicated. The author also uses a lot of words describing the environment so clearly that it seems as if you were there yourself walking beside Ishi and his tribe.

4 out of 5 stars Great story but really sad.......2006-10-06

I read this book in school and I enjoyed it. It had a lot of good history in it and I think it's important that people know the horrible things which were done to Native Americans. This story is beautiful and touching but if you are a sensitive reader I suggest keeping a box of tissues nearby because parts of it are really sad. The writer creates a strong bond between Ishi and the reader and at times it was as if I was feeling his pain. Though it's an emotional story, I really think it's powerful and worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars College Bound required reading.......2006-06-26

I was required to read this book when I took a freshman Anthropology Class many years ago. It is an eye-opening story about human struggle and love of life. Any student planning to attend college should read this book and understand what real difficulty has already been faced.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A scifi romance that actually works.......2002-11-26

I've read a ton of Jayne Ann Krentz and even more scifi/romance crossovers and I have to say that this is one of the best.

The Heroine didn't tick me off, the Hero was just the right amount of arrogant and sensible. He actually explained things to the Heroine and she was no mental slouch either. They worked well together and were both admirably strong in the face of adversity--helping each other instead of doing stupid things to hinder like so many romance characters do.

The world was interesting, there was actual character development, and I really wanted to know about both the development of the romance AND about the secrets of the futuristic place Krentz created.

Crystal Flame, though not as good as Sweet Starfire, was still not bad. It didn't have as much of a lasting effect on me, though. Both are worth a read, and at least Sweet Starfire is worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Me Tarzan You Jane.......2002-10-25

Both of these vintage Jayne Krentz books are dated but interesting to read. When she first came out with these I think that she was one of the very few romance authors doing fantasy/sci-fi/futuristics of that type so she was definitely breaking new ground. The problem is she used the old bodice ripper model to do it and her males are a bit more alpha than the 21st century reader is used to. These two books are more in her Stephanie James style of writing than her Crystal, Quick or Krentz style of writing. So brace yourself. The heroes are of the "Me Tarzan you Jane --and you mine" and the heroines are of the "No. I mean yes. I mean no. I mean yessss .... (insert moan)" type. They are still fun to read -- just realize that it's been a few years since they were written and they're not exactly politically correct.

This is one of the best books that I have ever read by this author. I loved that Heather had so much conpassion for others. Even though the ending of this book did not end the way I would have liked, it made me realize that life is not something to take for granted. 5 out of 5 stars In her shoes.......2006-04-11

Out of all the books I have read...this book is my favorite. I can really imagine myself in the same position Heather Barlow (the main character) was in. I usually don't like Lurlene McDaniel's books, but this one caught me from the very beginning. I didn't put it down until I was finished. (It only took me a few hours to read.) I recommend everyone to read this book.

It changed Melissa's life and Jory's. Melissa started chemo and it caused her to start loosing hair, she had to stay out of the sun and she had to be careful not get way to excited. Sometimes the things we see and experience through life teaches us the importance of life. That is why I thank Lurlene McDaniel for teaching me the importance of life in the book Goodbye Doesn't Mean Forever. Not only Jory gets to experience that lesson but its like your right there experiencing it too.

This is a great book for middle school and high school students, also older people, because we all experience a type of loss and wonder what could we have done to make it better for them. We also all need to learn the lesson of life and respect our life before it's all gone because you only get to experience it once.

In Goodbye Doesn't Mean Forever, Lurlene McDaniel tells a heart-felt story of a teenage girl who is struggling with cancer.
Melissa finds out early in the story that her leukemia, which has been in remission for two years has relapsed. Jory, Melissa's best friend promises to help her have the best senior year ever, because of all the stress and pain in Melissa's life. Melissa's older brother, Michael, who is also Jory's life long crush, is asked to donate bone marrow to Melissa, because that is her only hope. Soon after, Melissa becomes well and in a couple of days, the doctors say she will be able to go home. Jory goes to visit her two days later, only to find that Melissa has caught a fever and that her body is rejecting the bone marrow. At school, a boy named Lyle tries to help Jory with all the sorrow of her sick friend. Eventually, Jory falls in love with Lyle, but still has feelings for Michael. Will Jory find true love? Will Melissa overcome cancer? To find out, read Goodbye Doesn't Mean Forever.
I highly recommend this book to any girl ages 12-112 that enjoys romance and drama novels. It is an amazing book and I promise that if you read it, you won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Heart Graber.......2005-04-21

This book Goodbye Doesn't Mean Forever; is about a girl named Melissa and her struggle with getting leukemia again. Jory is Melissa's best friend and she throws a party at the beach for Melissa, because she was one of the finalists for a National Merit Scholarship. It is at this party that Jory finds out Melissa's Leukemia is back. The first time Melissa was able to have chemo therapy but this time Melissa has to have a bone marrow transplant and her brother is the bone marrow donor. For a long time Melissa is sick after receiving the bone marrow. To help pay for the medical bills Melissa's best friend Jory has a carnival and calls it Melissa Austin Day, all the money raised and donated on that day goes towards paying the medical bills. Also Jory is able to get her parents (who are rich) to get their friends to donate money to Melissa's family. Later the bone marrow ends up taking and then Melissa gets sick from meningitis.
I liked this book because it is sad and touching how Jory is such a good friend to help Melissa's family by raising money to help pay the medical bills. If I was ever sick I hope my friends would care enough to do the same for my family. It shows me how bad thing happen to good people even when they don't deserve to have this happen to them.
There is not anything that I did not like about this book. I found it a very fast reading book and hard to put down.
The author of this book, Lurlene McDaniel, is one of my favorite authors. I like her books because they are touching and have a lot to do with people with illnesses and real life issues.

        4 out of 5 stars great book!.......2004-04-15

What a great book Goodbye Doesn't Mean Forever is! It is the sequel to Too Young To Die. I recommend that you read Too Young To Die first, in order to understand better this one. This book is about two best friends, Jory and Melissa, and about Melissa fighting with leukemia. It is really a very sad story, it almost made my cry! I felt as if I knew Melissa myself and I was watching her suffering leukemia and the bone marrow transplant. I wish I had a friend like that, who would always be with me, no matter what! And I really liked the way Michael (Melissa's brother) and Jory's relationship ended being much better in the end.

This book is continued from the book Too Young to Die. In this book, Melissa has a relapse and needs to get back into remission. The doctors say, ¡§For a person to get into remission the second is harder.¡¨ The doctors recommended that Melissa try a bone marrow transplant. Since they needed to find a compatible donor, they said that a sibling would be the best donor. So then took some bone marrow from Michael, and sure enough, their bone marrow was compatible. Not long after that, they put Melissa into isolation. They needed to get rid of all her bone marrow and put Michael¡¦s bone marrow in her body. When people came to visit her, they had to be careful and not bring in any germs because her immune system couldn¡¦t fight off germs. Her brother¡¦s marrow was working fine, but then Melissa got a fever. It was either an infection or a sign or rejection for the transplant.

I like this book because it was exciting to learn about medical technology. I learned about things I never would have wanted to learn about. This book teaches friends not to give up on each other. Melissa always trusted Jory. Jory always did what she could to help Melissa. They depended on each other whenever they needed help. ¡§Melissa needs blood will you help me?¡¨ They never gave up on each other, even when Melissa died, Jory always knew that Melissa would still be there to help her, even if she couldn¡¦t help Melissa.

I dislike this book because this book I was very sad and Melissa died. When you read about people suffering makes you feel bad. I wanted to change the whole story and make it have a happy ending. I didn¡¦t like it when the doctors gave Melissa bad news about her leukemia.

My favorite part of the book was when Jory held a carnival and called it Melissa Austin Day. I really liked that part because not only Jory was doing it for a good cause, everyone was having fun. They raised a lot of money, and a lot of people donated blood to Melissa. I think that it is wonderful to have a friend that does these things for you.
