Book Description
A number of books critical of the pharmaceutical industry have recently been published, but none has been an exposé written by a senior executive of one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies. The Whistleblower is at once an unmasking of how corporations take care of malcontents and a gripping story of one man's fight to maintain his family and his sanity. Starting in 2003, the book details the illegal, even criminal business practices the author witnessed at his corporation, as well as his crusade to legalize the reimportation of drugs. It also explains how in this post-Enron world whistle-blowers can't simply be fired, and what the author's corporation did to coerce and silence him. A story of a battle that continues today, one which any American who takes or will take prescription drugs has a stake in, The Whistleblower is a powerful testimony.
Book Description
Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett and you’ve got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love…
Agnes Crandall’s life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she’s staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane, no last name, just Shane, and he has his own problems: he’s got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn’t so little, his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes’s house, and his last hit was a miss, Shane’s life isn’t looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hit men show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and—most dangerous of all—each other. Agnes and the Hitman is the perfect combination of sugar and spice, sweet and salty—a novel of delicious proportions.

Hilarious.......2007-10-10
I started this book on a night when I was dead tired and just needed something to keep me awake until an event I had to attend. No problem staying awake; I was laughing out loud. Great one liners, great imagination. I hope these two collaborate on more books.
Get out your frying pan!.......2007-10-08
If you are a fan of Jennifer Crusie at all, you will love this book! If you read "Don't Look Down" and were disappointed, give this book a chance. This is her second collaboration with Bob Mayer and this one is just like her other books. Agnes is a very amusing main character with great quirks. If you enjoyed Bet Me you will enjoy this book.
I love Crusie, but I'm not sold on Agnes.......2007-10-03
Like many have said before, this reminds me of almost all other Crusies I've enjoyed -- a good thing.
However, my expectations for this book were set up by the excerpt at the end of the paperback version of "Don't Look Down." And frankly, they were just not met. I enjoyed the excerpt much more than any of this entire book. I kept waiting for this book to live up to that excerpt's promise.
Now, maybe nothing changed from the excerpt (though it seemed to me it did; however, I did not do a line-by-line proof). But it feels like it did, and at least for now, I'll tread lightly when it comes to the next Crusie/Mayer collaboration.
Much Much Better!.......2007-10-02
Soo much better...
Well done Jenny and Bobbie!! Anges and the Hitman is soo much better than 'Dont Look Down' (The first attempt at romance by Mayer and Crusie)..
It looks like Jenny and Bobbie have finally found the right mix of Humor (HAR!), Action and Romance (and by romance I mean sex!)
If you love Vintage Crusie read Anges and the Hitman.. Anges' and Shane's relationship is a lot like Sophie's and Phinneas' in 'Welcome to Tempation'. A down side? Maybe BUT I love Welcome to Temptation so Im not fussed.
Read It You'll Love It!!!
Has it ALL !.......2007-10-01
I read a lot of novels and this one has it ALL....it is not only hilarious, but it also has the romance along with the mystery and adventure. I highly recommend this book for a nice, relaxing, enjoyable read.
Book Description
Following up on the success of the Adrenaline title Mob: Stories of Death and Betrayal from Organized Crime, Adrenaline Classics brings back the New York Times bestseller (originally published as Killer) that helped pave the way for the latest generation of nouveau-mob stories, from Donnie Brasco to The Sopranos. “Joey”—a journeyman Jewish hitman, numbers king, and loan shark—collaborated with David Fisher (co-editor of the hit Adrenaline title Wild Blue) to lay out the rackets in gripping detail. His story includes detailed accounts of his chillingly “professional” murders of thirty-eight victims. The strong sales of Mob are further evidence that the best mafia stories—and this is one of the best—capture the public’s interest. Joey the Hitman’s original best-seller status reflects the quality of the writing, the frank intelligence of the subject/writer, and Joey’s convincingly matter-of-fact, regular-guy tone. When he writes, debunking The Godfather, “... Actually very few mob members even have Bronx-Italian accents ... a lot of mob people are not very tough, the people we meet and deal with are very ordinary, most of us stay home at night and watch TV, and we only shoot each other when absolutely necessary,” you know you’re listening to the original Soprano. This edition includes a new afterword from David Fisher, who for the first time reveals Joey's identity and the incredible story of how Joey finally died.

Doesn't Sound True, But It's Entertainment.......2007-09-02
The nagging things about this book are it's many inconsistencies. He said he was making 150 dollars a day starting at 11, but he later says he knows what it's like to make no money. What, as a 10 year old? Or he had 10 poor years with his family? He says he was a tough teenager, didn't care if he lived or died. Then he says he got that attitude at 28 when his wife was murdered. And he seems to have been everywhere and have seen and know just about everyone who is/was famous in organized crime. There's a bunch of others, I'll let you find them, as you can add an extra star for entertainment in looking for them. But these things point to a subject that was made up and not consistent because its not real. If you want a real account of "hit" men, read Murder, Inc. It still rings modern even though it was written in 1951. And you can't put it down.
I give this 3 stars because of it inconsistencies.
Real life autobiography of Jewish hitman........2006-09-05
I read the original "Killer", by Joey, back in the early 70`s.I also saw a masked "Joey" interviewed on the Sunday evening talk show "Open Mind" by David Susskind. Susskind berates Joey, at one point, for using the slur"Pollack". Susskind said"You wouldn`t want me to use an anti-Italian epithet, would you?"Joey retorted."I wouldn`t care, really, since I`m not Italian. I`m Jewish"(Susskind was stunned!) Also, in "Killer", Joey recounts a meeting in a NYC club with the reputed Columbo crime family soldier, Carmine Di Biasi, in which he describes shoving the barrel of his revolver into Di Biasi`s mouth after Di Biasi "insulted my Ethnic backround". All in all, this is not a Primer on organized crime. To really enjoy this book you are better off reading a few other books first, such as "Mafia USA","The Grim Reapers","Pictorial History of the Mafia" or "The Vallachi Papers".
Before the Sopranos there was Joey..........2005-12-28
I read this many years ago when it first came out entitled as 'Killer' and thought it was a fascinating look at the business of crime. However, I just bought the reissue and noticed that a whole chapter devoted to Joey and his feelings about women was dropped. Why so? Were the publishers getting PC about a Mafia killer so as not to offend new readers? Anyone have the original? And does anyone have any info on Joey's real name? A mention was made of his obit in Time magazine...date and issue anyone?
Anitquated.......2005-03-25
Some good anecdotes. My problem with this book is that, in contrast to books written later, it is totally anonymous. Might have been necessary in the old days, but those were the old days.
Joey is not the most important factor.......2003-11-25
Joeys existence is not the most important or fun factor of this book. The most interesting aspect is the detailed description of normal everyday mob activities. Gambling , Loansharking , bribery. This book was a very interesting introduction into what the mafia is really like. I enjoyed every page and stopped reading the book I was reading prior because I became hooked to this one. A very good book if your interested in the complexities of playing the numbers , loan sharking or any mob activities. Worth the $$$ as much as any book.

“Richard Cain was possibly the most corrupt police official in the history of Chicago.” — Federal Bureau of Investigation
Here is the dramatic story of Detective Richard Cain’s criminal career as revealed by his half-brother. Cain led a double life—one as a well known cop who led raids that landed on the front pages, and the other as a “made man”
in one of Chicago’s most notorious mafia crime families. Michael Cain weaves together years of research, interviews, family anecdotes, and rare documents to create a comprehensive biography of this complex, articulate, and self-contradictory criminal genius. In a story that reads like the plot of Martin Scorsese
’s The Departed, Cain played both ends against the middle to become a household name in Chicagoland and a notorious figure in both the Mob and the world of Chicago law enforcement. Eventually murdered in a café by two masked men wielding shotguns, he lived and died in a world of bloodshed and violence. Cain left behind a story so outlandish that he has even been accused of being involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Filled with fascinating and until-now unknown facts, The Tangled Web tells the full story of this one-man crime wave.

Truth is Better Than Fiction.......2007-09-19
Imagine having a half brother who was both a highly decorated police detective and a "made" soldier in Chicago's Giancana crime family. That is the story that unfolds as Michael Cain describes the double life of his half-brother Richard. Richard Cain was rumored to be involved in the CIA plots to assassinate Fidel Castro and he was also named as one of the mob hit men supposedly involved in the assassination of JFK. He was appointed Chief Investigator for the Cook County Sheriff's Department at the same time he was on the payroll of mob boss Sam Giancana. What is amazing is that Richard Cain's corruption was widely suspected yet it did not prevent him from moving up the ranks of law enforcement. Along the way he also found time to bug foreign embassies, pass himself off as a psychologist and become and informant for the FBI. The book is mesmerizing read and covers many aspects of organized crime in Chicago from the 1950's to the early 1970's.
A most fascinating book........2007-05-26
You have to keep telling yourself that yes, this is a true story. For a leading character that came from such humble, mundane background, Dick Cain let a most extraordinary life. The book does an excellent job of tracking his life, from a pseudo-inside perspective. It adds to the appeal of the book that the author has a vested interest in the subject, but not involved enough to have a stake beyond discovery of the truth. No over the top dramatics but a very straight forward, well told story.
The book leaves you wanting more, which is a good measure of its success. Dick Cain did great things, terrible things, but great. You read his story and he seems to be just a run of the mill tough guy, but by the end of the book you realize just how many adventures he had and just home much of this era's history he saw. It was hard to put down and was told in a very personal, well pace manner.
This is a great view of organized crime from the inside. Not from someone who made it big in a financial sense or a power sense, but from a person who actually survived as long as he did without achieving either of those measures of success. Not a stooge but not a star, which makes it, in my experience, a unique and fascinating book.
Notes from the author.......2007-05-13
This book represents the culmination of many years of research both inside my family and inside the government agencies that were a part of Richard's life. I'm proud of the work I've done and encouraged by the feedback from people who have read it.
In the true sense of the old Chinese curse, Richard was a man who led an interesting life. I'm not proud of my brother, but I made a decision that his story was worth telling for all its fascinating twists and double dealing. When I was approached by the FBI and told (with implied threats) that I should not pursue the research, I knew that I was onto something that was worth my efforts. I hope you'll agree, and please feel free to send your comments to michaeljcain@gmail.com
Best Chicago Crime Related Book I've Read.......2007-05-04
I was lucky enough to obtain a copy of this book right after its release. This is one of the few "can't put down" books that I have read in ages. The narrative written by Michael Cain flows natuarally and made this book very easy to follow and read. How the author was able to find out some of the stories related is incredible. If one wishes to read not only about how the "system" worked in law enforcment decades ago as well as follow the rise and eventual demise of one of its key players-don't pass this excellent book.
Fascinating Read.......2007-04-20
While some people live double lives, Richard Cain led triple lives, and this book fills in many of the blank spots in the lives of this dark, but fascinating mob and CIA figure.

Tommy Monaghan is an assassin; that's right, he's your standard, grade-A hit man. Well, maybe he's not so standard. Tommy also happens to have super powers--just telepathy and x-ray vision, mind you. But let's face it, those are pretty super. Writer Garth Ennis and artist John McCrea have come up with a character that has surprising complexity. By all accounts this hit man should be an antihero, and yet, Monaghan has strict rules for himself: he doesn't shoot anyone he considers "one of the good guys." Naturally, there's a lot of subjectivity here, possibly even hypocrisy, but this murky area between good and evil, right and wrong, is one of Ennis's strong points. In what is essentially a superhero setting (Gotham City, home of Batman), this book delivers elements of action, adventure, crime, and horror, all held together by Ennis's funny and believable dialogue. The blurb on the back cover sums it up nicely: "No fancy costume. No magic tricks. Just plenty of ammo, a pack of cigs, and a pitcher of beer." --Jim Pascoe

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Tommy Monaghan is a killer. Professionally. A freak alien type encounter ends up giving him some superpowers. Telepathy and x-ray vision, pretty useful stuff.
After this he decides to specialise. He will only kill bad guy metahumans. When he is given a contract on a green haired clown he comes into conflict with Batman.
Quite a bit of this is amusing, too, even though it doesn't sound like it would be. Monaghan is your likeable rogue type.
Hitman, Vol.1.......2003-10-31
Garth Ennis is usually at his best when he has total creative freedom on his titles. His character, Hitman (sort of meant to be a super-hero name like BatMAN, SpiderMAN....HitMAN...hehe) was created and debuted in a story involving demons. In fact Hitman's first issue was in The Demon Annual #2. At the time there were other issues to address. Mainly the Demon and whatever thing he's up to. In order to wrap all this up, Ennis first had to continue a similar storyline with demons throughout the first few issues of Hitman's ongoing title. Although very good, it still reads like Ennis really just wanted to get it over with. Hitman, Vol.2 is more the Hitman that we all love. Once the character was established, Ennis had the freedom to move the story arcs into a more 'organized crime' vein. But to know Hitman, you have to start at the beginning which is right here. Garth Ennis' best? Oh, heavens no. But still a worthy read. However if you're new to Garth Ennis, try picking up his best: Preacher.
COOL, BUT DISAPPOINTING AT THE SAME TIME.......2003-01-10
Garth Ennis is a great writer. After reading his genius Preacher series, I craved more of his great action and witty dialogue. Did I find it in Hitman? Yes, and no.
Movie, television, and storybook hitmen are always portrayed as the coolest kind of hero. They can kill the bad guy simply because it is there job. What makes Ennis's Hitman even cooler is that he has morals. He'll only take out Metahuman or super-crimanal scum. While this sounds like a cool concept, it doesn't entirely come out as awesome as it should.
A big part of the problem with Hitman is that the artwork is horrible. John McCrea's panels look like they're too crammed to fit all the action. And his depiction of the demons in this book are just lame.
Because this is a DC comic and takes place in Gotham City, Hitman has super powers (X-ray vision and telepathy). While he used his powers to great effect, (He threatens to read Batman's mind to reveal his secret identity) Ennis never gives the powers a specific purpose in the story.
This book does have some great highlights, particularly the Hitman's confrontations with Batman. The action-packed ending in Arkham Asylum is great, even though the villian is a real let down.
More goodies by Ennis.......2001-07-15
People who are looking for a second Preacher, this is not it. This book (which collects Hitman #1-3, Demon annual #2 and Batman Chronicles #4) is the first collection of a far more uncomplicated title, but therefore not any less fun, and the writing-style of Ennis is very recognizable here (and that's a good thing). Uncomplicated humurous (great oneliners) action, that's the best way to describe it. Tommy Monaghan is a Hitman with a conscience (who works in Gotham) who is blessed with powers like X-ray vision, telepathy and a incredibly high skill-level. Powers he likes to "abuse" in his interaction with other people, which makes for some hilarious scenes (btw, don't be fooled by him having powers because this is definately NOT a superhero title). He is different from your regular Hitman in the fact that he only takes on contracts to assassinate meta-humans, no 'regular Joe's'. AND he must see a reason for the killing, he won't kill people who he doesn't see as 'the bad guys.'
A group of demons from Hell who call themselves the 'Arkanonne' want to recruit him to be their representative on earth and send out an agent to go get him. Then Tommy gets hired to kill the Joker and he can make a million bucks with it, but he'd have to go into Arkham Asylum to do so. Meanwhile Batman is keeping an eye on the case (because he is naturally interested in everything that involves the Joker) which turns out to be something a little different from what Tommy had first expected it to be.
Like I said, this book is not as complicated as Preacher was. It doesn't really have a continuity where you have to know everything that has gone before to know what's it's about. It is an action-packed, lighthearted read about a group of Hitmen who are close friends (well some more than other) and it's filled with typical Ennis humor and oneliners (which work very well). The artwork of McCrea also needs to be given some credit because after reading it I can't think of anyone I would have liked to see in his place. The scenes follow up fluently and his facial expressions are really good, a very important factor in the book. So for people who want a deep, complicated story where you need to notice everything to see what's going on, this is not the best choice for you. For people who like Ennis' sense of bizar humor, oneliners and a lot of blood-and-guts packed action this would be more than welcome. One of MY favorite series at least.
The other Ennis masterpiece.......2001-04-05
Just like his awesome series 'Preacher', Garth Ennis manages to create a story that deals with morality, comradery, and bucket loads of bloody violence in 'Hitman'. This first book collects all the major issues that deal with the characters origin; two Batman books and the first three issues of the Hitman series. Although his origin is a bit weak (he receieved telepahty and x-ray vision after being attacked by a demon...go figure) the story quickly skips passed it and gets to the heart of the action. Ennis' usual gallows humour is strongly evident (what happens at a mobsters funeral in the last few issues is hilarious) as is his penchant for nasty head wounds. Albeit, the violence is nowhere near that of the 'Preacher' - he had to tone it down for DC - the writing is strong and McCrea's artwork is great. A fun read from the Irish wonder writer.

A run-of-the-mill assassin gets bitten by some kind of demon, and instead of being dead, the attack left him with telepathy and x-ray vision, making him an even better hit man. That's Tommy Monaghan's story, and from there it gets better and better. The second collection of Hitman comic books is much stronger and much more consistent than the original volume. 10,000 Bullets is a tale of vengeance and honor. Writer Garth Ennis has a kind of magic in which he takes characters who live firmly outside of the conventional and then infuses them with a heightened morality. In Tommy Monaghan you'll find a character you can both cheer for and feel sorry for, because he's not a stereotyped killer--he's a three-dimensional human being. This book's only real limitation is that some of the characters, specifically Monaghan's new girlfriend, are introduced in the previous collection. Nevertheless, 10,000 Bullets is an exciting read even for newcomers to Ennis's work. --Jim Pascoe

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The title is obviously a parody, and there is a parody here, as the Hitman is hired to get rid of a superhero gone over the line, called Nightfist.
One problem with being a killer for hire is that when you kill people, it can certainly make other people very unhappy. A mob boss is one of the not happy people, and he puts a contract out on Tommy.
More Ennis fun.......2001-07-16
Tommy Monaghan is a Hitman with a conscience who's blessed with x-ray vision, telepathy and one hell of a skill-level. He'll shoot any meta-human you want (he doesn't take contracts on regular people because 'where's the sport in that') as long as you bring the money, AND he HAS to see the target as 'bad people'. Otherwise, no deal. In this book (which collects Hitman #4-8) the tables are turned when a mob boss from Tommy's past wants revenge and puts a price on HIS head. A hitman, who sees himself as the best in the world, called Johnny Navarone takes the job. Meanwhile Tommy himself, who doesn't suspect a thing so far, takes on a contract of his own. He's supposed to kill of a corrupt vigilante named 'Nightfist' (which is really meant as a mocking of superhero-comics) for the price of $10.000. The assignment turns out to be a set-up and Tommy gets in a world of trouble. Navarone then does something he really shouldn't have. Now IT'S PERSONAL ! From here the story turns into a kill-fest. Finally the book concludes with #8 which is a "Final Night" tie-in. The guys spend a night hanging out but when they realize the sun isn't coming up, and Superman's on the news, they decide to stick together in the bar to wait for the end of the world. They pass the time by telling each other about the time they came closest to death.
Compared to the previous Hitman collection (the one that hasn't got a name) this one contains a lot less one-liners and a heck of a lot more action and graphic violence. Off course there ARE still one-liners and the humorlevel is up to score (it IS a Ennis title after all) but you just have to look harder for it (just LOOK at the characters, it's a blast). It's a great addition to the Hitman series and people who like the typical Ennis' humor, and don't neccesarily need a story to be too complicated will have a lot of fun with it. That's mainly what going on, action and humor and it works out very good. The one downside this book has though is that it relates a lot to the previous collection, so you should really get that one first or at least read it prior to this one (or you'll miss out on things here and there). But that's also a good book so that's not a waste either.
Continuing the bloody fun.......2001-04-05
This book, the second collection of Garth Ennis' 'Hitman' series sees the character of Tommy Monaghen (a hitman with superpowers and a fast wit) face major changes in his life. This collection also brings a close to one of the stories introduced in the first collection, as a mob boss (whose dead siamise twin's corpse decays on his bodies other half) sends a smooth assassin to deal with Tommy. All this, and a pretty funny jab at super-hero comics. '100,000 Bullets', an obvious play on Azzerello's '100 Bullets', is a fun read and a solid continuation of the 'Hitman' story.
A masterpiece.......1999-10-13
By far, this is one of the greatest stories I have ever read. Comic book or otherwise. Action, heart, humour, and some of the best dialogue ever written. The scene with the bathtub... my God... it almost ripped my heart out. Garth Ennis is truly one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
And You Thought Tarantino Was Violent..........1998-05-11
Even if you've never read Hitman before in your life, this boook is still great. From the introduction by Kevin Smith of Clerks and Chasing Amy fame, to the final chapter which offers an unconventional tie-in to your standard DC "end of the world" crossover, this book is great. If the first three pages don't make you laugh, this book might not be for you... but if you're in the mood for Siamese twin mosters whose other halves are dead, a motherlode amount of blood and killing, funny-as-hell war stories, the world's stupidest superhero and the only gangsta in America who doesn't swear, this book is for you. Ennis shows what he can do when freed from the high intellectual lofiness of Preacher (that's sarcasm, son.)

I have been a Bret Hart fan since 1985 and it's so wonderful to see a book finally released about his incredible life. Bret is such an inspiration to so many people. Although I knew a majority of the facts in the book, there were several things I didn't know about, particularly regarding his career in the late 70s and early 80s. I definitely recommend this book to anybody who is a Hitman fan.

Now I will buy the Hitman Contracts game to go with this book. The book arrived in a timely manor as described, and I am happy with it. Thank you allbooks4u.
Made a great gift!.......2005-08-02
Hello! I actually did not purchase this for myself, but as a gift for my 24-year-old brother. When I asked him how he liked it and if he was getting what he had hoped from it his response was an emphatic, "yes"! He said that the game seemed almost useless without it because you were limited as to how far you could go in the game and how much you can do in the game.
My brother is pretty honest with his opinions so, from the sounds of it, this would be a sure hit for anyone who enjoys exploring the videogame world!
I hope this has helped!

As good as..........2004-05-16
This guide is as good as the last 2 strategy guides for this franchise game. Many will remember that they too can be considered, if you are unfamiliar with these games, difficult to follow. You may actually have to "think outside the box" when using it. But, not anymore then the other HITMAN guide books. There are so many ways to do a HIT that all the variables and methods could never fit in book form. There's a guide DVD out now if you want to see them. We need to remember that guides give one example on how to go about finishing a level or get us through a rough patch when stuck. When you are playing a game as open-ended as this one.
