Excellent therapy tool for higher level cognition.......1999-02-23
I work at a outpatient head injury rehab facility and deal mainly with higher level cognition such as attention, problem solving, and memory. It is very difficult to find materials and I used to make up my own. This book has allowed me to free up alot of the time I used producing my own materials. It is a terrific book and a great asset. One other therapist in my facility has bought the book and our student affiliate has taken great interest in it. Great job at making such a useful tool!
Excellent therapy guide with useful and functional tasks.......1999-01-22
This is an excellent book for beginning therapists as well as those who have been in the field for several years. I have had the distinct pleasure of working with these authors over the last few months and have found them to be an excellent example of dedicated speech therapists who are willing to go the extra mile for their clients who are higher functioning. The acitivites in this book are functional and easy to adapt to individual clients and their needs. I guarantee that you will find this book useful in planning the most effective and functional therapy for you clients. Enjoy!!
Excellent resource for new clinicians.......1999-01-21
As a graduate student, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. I have used it in many different practicum settings, and find the activities and exercises easy to use as well as effective. In addition, the appendix on 'therapy documentation, transition, and discharge' has been very helpful as I learn more about the paperwork that accompanies the field of speech-language pathology.

Customer Reviews:
poorly designed puzzles.......2007-08-04
You might wonder how a sudoku puzzle can be poorly designed...the puzzles in this book violate at least two of the rules in good puzzle design. The first is that a well designed puzzle is symmetrical. You should be able to copy the puzzle and rotate it 180 degrees and the numbers should overlap. None of the puzzles in this book are designed that way. The second rule is that there should be only one correct answer. Many of the puzzles can be completed in multiple ways.
Two great things about the book are the spiral binding...and the main reason I selected it initially...and the small size. It fits in your purse so you have an activity with you all the time.

Excellent Resource.......2001-02-05
Excellent resource for any clinician involved in assessment of cognitive abilities of elderly patients. Very nicely complements neuropsychological research findings by focusing on application of scientific knowledge to the individual case. Nicely balanced presentation with very useful practical tips and guidelines for gero-neuropsychological assessment. I have worked with geropsychiatric populations for about 7 years and would highly recommend this book to any beginning or experienced practitioner working in this area.

Book Description
In an overpopulated world seeking living room in the jungles, the International Ecological Organization was systematically exterminating the voracious insects which made these areas uninhabitable. Using deadly foamal bombs and newly developed vibration weapons, men like Joao Martinho and his co-workers fought to clear the green hell of the Mato Grosso. But somehow those areas which had been completely cleared were becoming reinfested, despite the impenetrable vibration barriers. And tales came out of the jungles . . . of insects mutated to incredible sizes . . . of creatures who seemed to be men, but whose eyes gleamed with the chitinous sheen of insects. . . .A fascinating examination of the fragile balance between consciousness, man and insect from one of the best-loved science fiction creators of all time.

The Green Brain.......2007-09-05
This is a science fiction novella first published in 1966, one year after the classic Dune. One of the big themes of Dune is, of course, ecology. In The Green Brain, Herbert explores ecology in another setting - the jungles of a future Brazil, on Earth. In this future Brazil, the humans are trying to eliminate all insects in an effort to decrease disease and increase food production (they will keep some bees around to pollinate the crops). Needless to say, this is an ecological disaster in the making. And the bugs find a rather unique way to fight back - they develop a group brain that is every bit as bright (or brighter) than the humans. But the Green Brain does not want to fight a war with humans - it wants to find a way to communicate with them, and get them to stop the destruction of the ecosystem that all life depends upon.
Herbert has some really interesting ideas here, but the short length of the work prevents him from fully developing them. He also does not fully develop the three main characters (a Brazilian who fights the bugs on the front line, a beautiful Irish entomologist who also acts as a seductive spy, and a Chinese scientist who helped eliminate insects in China with very bad results). I was particularly puzzled on what the Chinese man's motivations were, as he knew what happened in China was a disaster, yet still pushing for the destruction of insects in Brazil.
Great ideas, but simply not fully developed...
A Short View of a Long Idea.......2007-04-05
An interesting book in the light it sheds on Dune. You can read the entire Dune series a number of times and get so caught up in the political/religious/sexual etc. themes that you can miss the larger point he begins to make as the story progresses, which is that ecology, when taken to its logical conclusion and extended beyond its customary limits of flora/fauna systems, is the ultimate science, uniting hard and soft disciplines from physics to economics to religion by studying their interactions.
Not a fantastic book by any stretch, but still really interesting, and essential if you want to really understand Herbert and Dune. Completely worth 7 bucks and an afternoon of your time. It will make the Dune series more meaningful.

It wasn't that bad........2004-11-22
Dune was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It was a feast for the mind. This book on the other hand was a light snack. Wich I think Mr. Herbert intended. I have nothing bad to say about this novel. It is an interesting story with a cool ending. The guy who did the first reveiw took it too seriously. Lighten up!
Do not waste your time........2004-02-06
When I choose to read a book, I do so for one of two major reasons: 1. Fun, 2. Insight. If the book is not fun, then I at least want to be presented with a story that makes me think. "The Green Brain" did not fulfill either purpose adequately in spite of the fact that the verbal creativity used to described various landscapes was inventive and the character development is quite good.
It was not a fun read because, though you do come to know the characters (and you do feel empathy for their desperate circumstances) you don't find yourself admiring them or respecting them. None of the three main characters (Joao, Rhin, and Chin-Lhu) are principled people and, in this respect, the book does not uplift.
Neither was the book insightful. Without giving it away, the main "message" (which is summarized in the last chapter) is quite underwhelming and is a bit of a stretch given the story that was presented to support it. Though the internal dialogue of Chen-Lhu provided one an opportunity to refect on Machiavellian doctrines, still, it was not necessarily uplifting or insightful. In fact, it was more frustrating than anything else (which may have been intended). But, if you intend to frustrate without providing insight, you are not giving the reader a very good reason to read your story.
I do not recommend that you read this book. The story will not go where you may anticipate it going. The beginning is very promising and the journey of Joao, Rhin, and Chen-Lhu is involving but the two segments of the book don't feel very well connected. A good amount of tension and anticipation is built for a resolution but the last chapter of the book feels so different from the rest of the story that it leave one feeling dissatisfied. Finally, there is a general lack of morality within the main characters and this cements my inability to recommend this book. Do not waste your time.
Fascinating ideas, incredible description........2003-12-18
Some time in the future, people are trying to make the Earth more habitable by destroying all of the world's insects and replacing them with genetically engineered ones that are more favorable to human populations. As the insects are faced with extinction, mutations appear that are better able to combat the new threat. Things get pretty strange, but this is by no means a bad thing.
Oh no! A *CHIGGER* has appeared inside of the insect-free zone! By the way, the chigger is half a meter long and spits acid. Yes, I realize that that is technically impossible. Don't worry: technicalities like that are taken care of.
Anyway, it gets better. The insects have also managed to copy the human idea of INTELLIGENCE--hence the title of the book.
The introduction and exploration of these ideas are done admirably during the first half of the novel. Then, around the half-way point, the whole tone and direction of the story changes. And this is when it gets REALLY good. The final chapters are composed of pages and pages of description. Sound boring, does it? Not in the least. This is the best description I have ever read in my life. The mood is perhaps described best as "Poe-esque"--subtle psychological descriptions that pull you right into the story, make you really understand how the characters feel. It takes you right along with the characters, providing real empathy, fear, love, anger and understanding all the way. Of course, it's more than JUST description. The Master brings so much into the writing in ways that only he can do. There's just no way to describe it--like everything Frank Herbert, you need to read it for yourself to know what it's like. I didn't really like the very last chapter, but I suppose nine out of ten ain't too bad.
The philosophical theme of the story is basically deep ecology or something similar to it. Herbert really shows his conservationist side in this one. Also, a lot of it kind of reminds me of Nietzche.
This is a very short novel (208 pages), but every page Frank Herbert writes is worth ten pages written by a lesser author. If you are a Frank Herbert fan--or a fan of intelligent fiction in general--you should definitely check out this book.

Customer Reviews:
I didn't exactly find out about this book in a normal way........2003-08-20
I'm a fan of musician Adam Green, who is the son of the book's authors. I was on his website where it said "Adam's parents wrote a book together" with a link. So I click on it, and it turns out to be for headaches. I've gotten migranes ever since I as little (and I guess all of my loud music doesn't help). I ended up checking it out from the library and learned a lot about "managing my headaches."
Patient of Dr. Green's.......2003-03-16
Dr. Mark Green treated me for migraines for about five years until I moved out of the area which made it very difficult to keep him as my neurologist (how sad for me!!). This book is written in the same style as how he manages his patients - nothing is set is stone, he is very aware of the many nuances of migraine as well as nuances of each patient's physiology, and he is always at the cutting edge of technology. I recommend this book, and Dr. Mark Green, highly. (Since I never was treated by his wife, Dr. Leah Green, I cannot offer the same comments, but would presume that her level of excellence matches her husband's)
Interesting and Informative.......2001-05-26
"Managing Your Headaches" is so readable, it's hard to believe the authors have explained more about headaches than a medical text.
Thank You, Doctors........2001-05-12
The Doctors Mark and Leah Green have zeroed in and written a compelling work aimed at those of us who suffer migraine headaches. It is enormously informative, helpful, intuitive, and accurate. The book is also a very good read, and when you finish reading it you know that you really can manage your headache and not suffer needlessly. Thank you, Dr. Green. Thank you, Dr. Green.

Taking a page from karate--another Japanese art--each title is graded by color: White Belt for easy, Green Belt for medium level, Brown Belt for hard, and Black Belt for the super-tough solvers. And because each book has an amazing 300 puzzles, the fun can go on for hours.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, but a little uneven.......2007-03-03
I actually received this entire series from my brother, who although he couldn't get into the Sudoku mode himself appreciated my passion for it.
I enjoy all levels of Sudoku, and tend to select the difficulty of the puzzle I do on the basis of how I'm feeling rather than on what I believe my ability to be. I began this book when I wanted a little more of a challenge than the White Belt book could give me, while still not wanting to put my mental abilities to a real test. Green Belt Sudoku provided just the degree of challenge I wanted. I do have to agree with one of the other reviews; the book is somewhat uneven in its level of difficulty, with some of these puzzles actually being a little more difficult than some of those in the Brown Belt book. All in all, however, it's a satisfying book.
Harder Than Many of the Tough Level Sudoku books!.......2006-03-06
I first experienced "Sudoku" puzzles a couple of months ago - and I was drawn into this numbers/logic puzzle from the get-go. I find Sudoku's very relaxing, as you have to focus on what you're doing, so your mind tends to quiet down and do just that - focus...
The way Sudoku works is this: You are given a 9x9 grid with a few numbers already filled in. The object is to get the numbers 1 through 9 in each of the boxes (there are nine), as well as in each row & column of the full 9x9 grid - with each number being used only once.
I gave this particular Sudoku book 4 stars because, although it says the puzzles included are of medium difficulty, I've found that, in many cases, they are even harder than the tough-level puzzles I've completed to date.
If you are a beginner to Sudoku, I would suggest "The Book of Sudoku" by Michael Mepham. I think it has better instructions & examples, and the puzzles include several different difficulty levels - so as you grow in learning how the puzzles work, you'll have puzzles that increase in difficulty as well.
Overall, "Green Belt Sudoku" is a great book for those who are looking for a greater challenge. However, I would consider these puzzles to be at the "tough" level, so they may become quite frustrating to the beginner.
A GOOD BOOK FOR MORE EXPERIENCED SUDOKU TYPES.......2006-01-04
Sick with the flu, a friend gave me GREEN BELT SUDOKU to pass the time getting well. Of course, I had no idea what a sudoku puzzle was until I opened this book. It turns out that green belt is the medium level of difficulty. Pen in hand, I attacked the puzzles and worked the first few then hit three in a row that stumped me. Perhaps I am a white belt (easy level) sudoku person but I work a puzzle a day (with some successes and some "give ups") and find it a nice distraction from my routine. Working a sudoku puzzle requires concentration; only half joking, I would imagine sudoku would be a great way to delay the onset of dementia because it engages the mind so well. You don't have to be a math wizard to do these puzzles. The rules are fairly simple but apparently there are some sophisticated strategies and techniques for solving sudoku puzzles, based on the number of books offering such advice. GREEN BELT SUDOKU contains 300 medium-level puzzles with the answers. There is a brief introduction on what sudoku is and how to solve a sudoku puzzle. Sometimes spelled Su Doku, these logic-based placement puzzles were first created in the United States. The Japanese made sudoku popular in 2005. GREEN BELT SUDOKU is a good collection of puzzles for more experienced sudoku types and, at a puzzle a day, should keep someone busy for almost a year. Only the perhaps too-brief brief introduction keeps this from being a five-star review.
Book Description
Sudoku fever is on! Which book in the Martial Arts Sudoku series will provide the perfect challenge for you? The skill level recommended to solve these puzzles is ranked in the same way as Japanese karate levels—by different colored belts.
