This is an attractive "point-of-sale," impulse item sort of a book that has you wondering "what was I thinking about when I bought this?" There is no theme around which the selected phrases are chosen. No gender or occassion. No inspirational or historical or career-oriented construct. It's just a bunch of the Latin "usual suspects" printed with a nice-enough graphic. No source documentation. No attributions. Just a drawing of the sun and the words, "Carpe Diem." It would more appropriately show a watercolor drawing of a pick-pocket and the pharse, "Caveat Emptor."

It would be a great gift item, but I cannot imagine to whom one would gift it.

4 out of 5 stars Living in the Moment.......2007-10-09

Carpe Diem is all about seizing life in the best possible way. This is an encouraging and humorous YA novel about one Vassar Spore who on her quest to do everything exactly the right way finds her life going not quite exactly as planned. And once she realizes its not about controlling every situation but taking each step in life as an adventure worth having, she truly meets some wonderfully imagined characters and finds herself in a place she never thought she'd be.

Autumn Cornwell does an excellent job of ushering in a world that we can only hope to one day experience for ourselves, both the tough, the absurd, and downright hilarious-- This is a great YA book for girls, and i think guys will find humor in it too. A memorable book which inspires us to live in the moment and take the challenges life gives us head on. Grab your traveling shoes!

5 out of 5 stars MY FRIEND AUTUMN'S BOOK.......2007-09-11

I've been friends with Autumn (Cornwell, of course!) for about 8 years. I still remember the day when we were talking on the phone and she suddenly announced that she was going to become a young adult book author. My first thought was, "Do people just decide to do that?" My second thought was, "How?"

Well, Autumn not only decided to do it, she did it. How? By writing a hilarious novel about an exceptionally bright, disaster prone, endearing, unforgettable teen named Vassar Spore. The story follows Vassar from her rigidly scheduled and predictable life in Seattle to her anything-but-predictable misadventures in Southeast Asia. Accompanying Vassar on her travels are her free spirited Grandma Gerd and Hanks, a wry Chinese Malaysian who's enthralled by American culture and, hmmmmm, perhaps by Vassar, as well???

If Autumn's descriptions of the exotic countries that her characters visit seem vivid and very real to readers, that's because Autumn, herself, has traveled to every one of these places. Also, many of the things that happen in this book were inspired by events that Autumn actually experienced, too.

And, yes, that includes the "Laotian jungle adventure" (as her book jacket bio calls it), involving opium addicts, cold temperatures, and a travel companion who accidentally causes a heck of a lot of trouble.

When I first read Autumn's book, it was just a typed up manuscript. She hadn't even sent it out to agents yet. At that time, the story was called SQUAT TOILETS, and I could easily imagine generations of teens reading it and being inspired to, someday, travel to distant places to experience adventures of their own.

If CARPE DIEM does change the life of even one reader, it's amazing to think that it will all be because, one day, my friend, Autumn, decided to become a YA author...

A very, very good one.

5 out of 5 stars from the other side of the world.......2007-09-10

LIM, indeed!! There's still much to learn in life, but I do know a little bit about squatty potties, SE Asia, Asian guys without facial hair, and overachievement. This book is awesome YA book that made me think about the here and now that I tend to ignore or forget. There is so much life-planning that I constantly do, and this was a good reminder to laugh and enjoy life as it is.

As for how true it is to life in SE Asia, well... I've had my share of food poisoning, snakes, and bamboo huts. Reliving those moments with Vassar made me laugh so much, as some previously awkward memories re-surfaced. That first time with a squat toilet was ridiculous.

Enjoy this book! :-) It's funny and wise, and I hope you like it as much as I have. May we all LIM!

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!.......2007-09-07

Fast-paced, humor at every turn, vicarious visit to the Far East (the only way to visit:--)) ), Vassar is a WONDERFUL character, everyone wants a relative like Grandma Gerd, and I can't wait for a sequel. Thanks so much for introducing me to Carpe Diem. I've already passed it on to friends to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy Every Twist and Turn.......2007-09-05

What a great book! Slow down and live, don't plan your life away. That has never been my problem, but Vassar plans her every moment (even putting her retainer in).
Grandma blackmails Vassar's parents so that she has to join her on her travels in Southeast Asia. Just wait! Don't miss the clues and DON'T miss this book.

On the run from interplanetary assassins, covert operative Val Con yos'Phelium and former mercenary sergeant Miri Robertson end up stranded on a distant planet-with no rescue in sight.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reasonably intelligent romantic space opera.......2007-09-10

This is the third volume in a story arc that began with _Conflict of Honors,_ and it picks up right where _Agent of Change_ left off, with Val Con yos'Phelium and Miri Robertson apparently marooned by circumstances on an interdicted (pre-spaceflight) world. Much of the book is taken up with the pair learning about and adapting to the local culture. As a Scout, Val Con is used to this, but Miri is essentially uneducated and has to flounder a bit before she learns about her own talents. Their use of music to fit themselves in is a nice theme. But there's also the search for their missing kinsman being carried on by the Korvals -- which draws the notice of the Department of Interior, which you don't want to do. Again, the romantic element gets a bit out of control, but not too badly. And you want to have the next volume ready to hand when you finish this one!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Book.......2006-06-16

Although it is an enjoyable book, I did not like Carpe Diem by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller as much as I have enjoyed the other books in the Liaden series, perhaps because I just didn't like the plot device of having them be Val Con and Miri Robertson be stuck on a planet. However, that is not to say that this was not a good book-- it was. Reading about Val and Miri struggle with the language difficulties and trying to fit in on a planet where they obviously don't was quite fun and the interplay between Val and Miri was very natural. i'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 more as a comparison to the other books in the series-- taken on its own merits, it is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd in the adventures of Miri and Val Con.......2005-07-04

"Time I was - sick - right after Klamath, I got to read lots. Book I liked best was called DICTIONARY OF PHRASE AND FABLE. It was sort of a list of things that people had said and believed - and sometimes *still* said - and next to each one was an explanation of what it was really supposed to mean.
"*Carpe diem*, now - that's supposed to mean, 'seize the day,' enjoy yourself while you can. Seemed like good advice."
- Miri Robertson to Val Con, first day on Interdicted World I-2796-893-44 (Vandar)

Unlike its two predecessors - CONFLICT OF HONORS, which concentrates primarily on the DUTIFUL PASSAGE crew with little reference to Val Con, and AGENT OF CHANGE, which concentrates *solely* on Val Con without reference to the DUTIFUL PASSAGE crew - this third volume of what later became the omnibus PARTNERS IN NECESSITY rotates the viewpoint between the yos'Galan and yos'Phelium branches of clan Korval. As such, it contains minor spoilers for CONFLICT OF HONORS and major spoilers for AGENT OF CHANGE. At a minimum, read AGENT OF CHANGE before tackling this book, and make sure to have the sequels PLAN B and I DARE at hand when you finish, since CARPE DIEM is only the second book in the continuing story of Val Con's experiences as an Agent of Change working for "the Department of the Interior" - a radical splinter group within Liaden society who are determined to give Liad its rightful place in the galaxy, although they're convinced they'll have to destroy Liad's culture to do so (those pesky clan loyalties are so inconvenient).

In one sense, CARPE DIEM is merely a waiting game, a holding action between AGENT OF CHANGE and PLAN B, wherein Miri and Val Con are trapped on an Interdicted World - a world inhabited by humans, but insufficiently advanced to have joined galactic civilization as yet - and awaiting rescue.

In terms of character development, though, CARPE DIEM is a good book. Val Con and Miri are still getting to know each other, never mind settling into being married to one another. Val Con, as a rich kid from a loving family with an expensive education, is still learning about how to reassure Miri (who had none of those things) that he'll be there for her when she needs him, while learning to open up enough to let her help with *his* issues, the Department of the Interior having done quite a lot of psychological damage to him when making him over into an Agent. They're also both learning to fit into an alien society (about the level of early 20th century Earth), which puts them on a somewhat level playing field, although Val Con as a former Scout has the advantage of being taught to handle such situations.

If you like Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels, I recommend this series highly. Val Con's a lot like post-WWI Lord Peter, including the chatty defensive mechanisms and sense of humour. Miri has fewer similarities to Harriet Vane, being a retired mercenary soldier with little formal education but a quick wit and some deep emotional scars. While Val Con has the obvious emotional trauma of having been remolded into an Agent of Change, she had some experiences in her military career that once put her in drug rehab, something she's reluctant to tell Val Con about, not knowing how he'll react.

Not that it's all angst, by any means. Val Con and Miri both have lively senses of humour, and we have interludes by Val Con's adopted brother Edger (six feet of 600-year-old Clutch turtle is a good person to have looking out for you when you're lost, not to mention on the run from the mob) and Val Con's yos'Galan cousins.

"Tell me, denubia, did the contract husband leave with all faculties intact? If yos'Galan owes for mental disability it would be best for me to settle it before the PASSAGE leaves."
- Shan yos'Galan to his sister Anthora (older brothers can be *so* unreasonable...)

2 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not deep.......2005-04-13

The books in this series are intriguing principally in terms of plot. Action, rather than detail drives the events. Character development is decent, but descriptive elements to embellish both plot and character are lacking.

For example, in the introduction of the turtle-like race, there is little physical description available beyond that they are large, long-lived, and generally turtle-like. This may be an intentional facet of the authors' writing styles, however, it is to be noted in the descriptions of places and people as well.

Apart from visual elements, sounds are not fully described either--guns go "boom" ...

The novels are quite appropriate as far as reading level goes for younger audiences, but the content is such that an older teen audience is recommended. Sexual situations are not described in detail, but a post-modern ambivalence toward sexual issues is prevalent.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful - I Loved It!.......2004-01-30

Val Con yos'Phelium, future Delm of Clan Korval, Second Speaker to the House and former Agent of Change for the Department of the Interior and his lifemate, Miri Robertson, a former mercenary and bodyguard, were ordered not to be harmed by the Juntavas syndicate. However, personal interpretation of 'not be harmed' left Val Con and Miri on a broken-down spaceship in the middle of nowhere with the enemy Yxtrang ready to kill them for the hunk of junk they were sitting in. However, Val Con and Miri managed to rig something together and 'jumped' to one of the nearest planets - a backwater world named Vandar.

Vandar had no contact with the outside universe and didn't even know that other cultures existed. With no spaceships and no radio comm that they could use, Val Con and Miri tried to resign themselves to a long stay and set about learning the culture and the language. Meanwhile, Shan yos'Galan, Val Con's brother and his lifemate, Priscilla, began searching the galaxy for him, as did Edger and Sheather, Val Con's Clutch brothers. Back on Liad, Nova yos'Galan, Val Con's sister, had translated a cryptic message from Val Con that, while ensuring the Clan of the heir's survival, told them precious little else. But she did discover that the Department of the Interior, a department that seemed shrouded in mystery and determined to conquer the planet of Liad and from there, the universe, was also looking for Val Con. The more she investigated, the more interested the Department became in Clan Korval...until Nova was forced to call Plan B - retreat strategically, trust no one, prepare for all out war....

Carpe Diem is the 5th book in the Liaden series if you read them chronologically, which I recommend. As with the other books, I simply loved Lee & Miller's characters and world building. They spend time on the details and it shows that they have carefully thought out and executed another masterpiece. I really feel as if I know the Korval family and am taking a remedial course on Liaden etiquette, these books are that well written! If you enjoy any kind of science fiction or space opera then this book has something for you - great characters, lots of action, enemies on all sides, high tech battle sequences, romance, family relations, honor, and much, much more! You can read this book as a stand-alone novel, but I would not recommend it as you will miss a lot of background and spend the first part of the book just trying to keep track of who everyone is. Also, you definitely should not miss out on any book in the wonderful Liaden universe - all of them are very highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An Enthusiastic Pep Talk.......2004-04-22

Not my favorite Campolo book, but worth a re-read. Short chapters lead to a lot of topic introduction...but not much development. This leads to a fever pitch pacing: the book's intent is to get you excited. Seize life! Do something! Experience things more fully! A good reminder to shake you out of the doldrums.

My favorite section, as usual, dealt with living more simply. His advice on page 223 regarding a christian standard of life is an articulate rendering of that which I'm trying to already do: stick to a standard of living...resisting the urge to 'grow' as the income does.

This book has something for everyone...and would make a good small-group book, as the chapters are short, no punches are pulled, and there's bound to be some lively discussion.

4 out of 5 stars Solid book.......2001-11-10

This is a solid book with lots of good insight from Campolo. My complaint would be that Campolo is such a great speaker, one that pours out emotion and feeling, and his writing falls short of that same intensity. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone that is advanced in their Christian reading, reading such books like 'The Divine Conspiracy', but for the less intense it is probably a good choice for "How such I live?" kind of reading. I'd also recommend Yancy and Manning.
Campolo does a good job of putting the hard questions right out there: "Are we doing what we should/want/dreamed of doing?" This would be a good book for a high school or college graduate, just to remind them that ten or twenty years can blow past and one can find oneself in a fenced in yard of regret.
Campolo offers a good elbow to the ribs and gives some practical advice to getting or staying on track in living ones life for Christ.

4 out of 5 stars A compelling topic addressed by a compelling author.......2001-08-30

Campolo has dozens of books out there; his writing style appeals to lots of readers. This one focuses on passionate enjoyment of life. After discussing the problems of materialism and life disillusionment that are predominant in our culture, Campolo unpacks the solution: living as God created us to. He challenges his readers to dream dreams and dare to live them out, embracing the fullness of life, including God, nature, work, and all the things around us.
Good: As with Johann Christoph Arnold's book _Seventy Times Seven_, this one has a lot of good stories and illustrations that powerfully convey the themes of the book. One example is of a man who has turned down high-paying opportunities in legal work in order to live in a one-room flat while working for civil rights - the very thing he enjoys doing. Another is of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who, when facing a mock execution, learned to savor every bit of life around him.
Bad: This book might be a bit cheesy for some people. Also, the danger with this kind of teaching is that some may interpret it to mean, "If it feels good, do it." This is not Campolo's intention, but it could be read that way. It's important to interpret a vision of fulfilled living within the context of the reign of God.
Opinion: My fourth-grade teacher once said to our class, "Today is February 6, 1980. This day will never happen in history again." She tried to teach us to appreciate everything around us and enjoy the offerings of each new day. It took awhile, but I've finally caught on to this truth. In this book Campolo has successfully delineated what it means to be truly "living".

4 out of 5 stars OK, The short chapters made it easy to read each night.......1999-04-09

The best part of this book for me was the section called "Coming Alive While Making a Living" Part 9. This part contains chapters called "This Job is Killing Me" and Community in the Workplace. These are chapters contain stories about how labor-management differences have been solved with words like...."everything would change if you guys would just treat one another like the other person is Jesus !"

I wish I had the courage to say these words !

The "value of the person" (VOP) and building character would be interesting to hear more about these seminars.

There are heart warming stories about Habitat for Humanity and Cardone Industries.

5 out of 5 stars Hard-hitting, real, true Christianity for the 90's & beyond.......1998-10-06

He's done it again! Campolo refuses to water down the Good News of the Gospel... He insists that Christianity grow sneakers and sprout wings.

Want to prove that Jesus is alive and well today? - Read/listen to this book and live what you hear and be filled to overflowing as you truly serve others in Jesus' name.

Skeptics/agnostics/atheists: Give it a try, too.

        Book Description

Though Horace is a great poet, much loved and imitated in the past, he is very little read today. This is partly because he has never been translated into readable English that is also faithful to the Latin original. David West here provides such a translation of one of Horace's greatest
works, and supports it with a basic commentary that will help newcomers to Horace--whether students or general readers--to understand how the poetry works.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Clear translation; helpful, thought-provoking commentary.......1999-01-30

This is an excellent place for someone who knows some Latin, but isn't an advanced student of the language, to start Horace (it worked for me, anyway). There's a brief, tantalising introduction to the poet's life and times, well-printed Latin texts and accurate but fluid English translations that leave just enough unsaid to puzzle the reader into thinking further (as Horace does himself in the Latin). The commentaries are well-written, accessible to all, and don't skip the difficulties. There are good notes on the metres, though putting them at the end of the book is a pity - too much flitting backwards and forwards is needed, and a non-latinist who is also not a musician might need a bit more explanation of how to apply them. The other commentaries (e.g. Nisbet and Hubbard) are cited and put into context where they're useful. The Odes, explained like this, are a revelation, and you may find yourself (as I did) involuntarily and painlessly memorising phrases or even whole verses of the Latin while reading through. Perhaps you'll also be stimulated to try out your own English verse translations of some of the poems. Very occasionally West has a rather eccentric interpretation of a word or image, but he always flags his own unorthodoxy, and in general he translates and explains clearly and modestly - you can disagree with him when you need to, without feeling patronised or let down. Above all, West transmits his strong affection for the very likeable Horace, whose tone he describes well, and often captures - a tone that moves quickly from light, worldy-wise irony to a serious view of fame, heroism, love, friendship and death, and back again to caustic wit, like clouds flitting quickly across a windy summer sky. The poems make you want to go and live in Ancient Rome - or rather, in the campagna outside it. These are some of the finest and most perfect poems ever written. So get a good Lewis and Short dictionary (that's the only important bit missing from the book) and "Carpe diem" - pluck the day.
