Book Description
"Double or Nothing" is a concrete novel in which the words become physical materials on the page. Federman gives each of these pages a shape or structure, most often a diagram or picture. The words move, cluster, jostle, and collide in a tour de force full of puns, parodies, and imitations. Within these startling and playful structures Federman develops two characters and two narratives. These stories are simultaneous and not chronological. The first deals with the narrator and his effort to make the book itself; the second, the story the narrator intends to tell, presents a young man's arrival in America. The narrator obsesses over making his narrative to the point of not making it. All of his choices for the story are made and remade. He tallies his accounts and checks his provisions. His questioning and indecision force the reader into another radical sense of the novel. The young man, whose story is to be told, also emerges from his obsessions.
Madly transfixing details-- noodles, toilet paper, toothpaste, a first subway ride, a sock full of dollars-- become milestones in a discovery of America. These details, combined with Federman's feel for the desperation of his characters, create a book that is simultaneously hilarious and frightening. The concrete play of its language, its use of found materials, give the viewer/reader a sense of constant and strange discovery. To turn these pages is to turn the corners of a world of words as full as any novel or literary discourse ever presented. "Double or Nothing" challenges the way we read fiction and the way we see words, and in the process, gives us back more of our own world and our real dilemmas than we are used to getting.
"Invention of this quality ranks the book among the fictional masterpieces of our age..." --Richard Kostelanetz, author of "The End of Intelligent Writing" and "The Old Fictions & the New"
"Federman takes the novel to the point of obsessive, ultimate reflexiveness-- and a

Disappointing reprint of classic.......2007-08-08
This is a terrific book, clever and rollicking and inventive and funny and haunting and all those good adjectives. But this edition is terribly disappointing; the text is set in a proportional font, which makes all the "concrete" games and shapes look cheesy. The pages (spoiler alert?) where the text is run together with no spaces between the words, for instance, are significantly easier to read in this edition, and a great deal is lost because of it. Try to hunt down a copy of the first (1971) edition if you can; this edition is a dim shadow of that one. (Hence the 4 stars -- really I'd give this edition much less but it is a five star book and a poor job of keeping it in print is better than none at all.)
absolutely fascinating genial eye-and-mindboggling.......1998-10-21
my review is short -- a line from a great poem by w.b. yeats: how can you tell the dancer from the dance
One of the best experimental novels out there.......1998-05-27
The structure of this book is ingeniuous - it's a guy writing a book about a guy writing a book about a 19 year old French Jewish boy coming to the US after his family is killed in the camps in WW2. This means you're immersed in this obsessive story about a guy planning on boying 365 days' worth of toilet paper and noodles and locking himself in a room to write, while the story about the kid is unrolled bit by bit, changed, modified, and improved. The typeography is all over the place, making the confusion even more profound by drawing things with the text, switching fonts, spacing, etc. There's a lot of humor in the obsession of the fictional writer, and the index/discourse at the end of the book is a killer. The writing puts it over the top, but the structure - the whole idea - is one of a kind.

Absolutely Captivating!.......1999-03-16
Double or Nothing is a gripping tale of murder, deception, and true love. It boasts a well written script, and an intriguing plot line. This modern who-dunnit is executed masterfully by an exciting cast of characters, led by Leif Garrett and Lisa Collins. They turn in fantastic performances as two fated lovers that time and injustice cannot separate. I have listened to this Audio Movie again and again in the two weeks since I purchased it, and I still find it absolutely captivating!
Cinematic Revelation for your mind.......1999-03-14
Imagination was the only form of entertainment in the mid 1920- 1950's and for writer M. D. Baer to take the most fascinating part of the entertainment business full circle. He has created not only a masterpiece for the industry. But has re-established what the original fore fathers of the business took so much pride in, imagination creating reality.
The audio movie "Double or Nothing" brings not only a gifted writer but an aspiring cast of seasoned entertainers from all branches of the entertainment business.
The combination of singing sensation Leif Garrett and Lisa Collins is just remarketable. If awards were given Garrett who is more famous for singing the love songs has found a new genre that highlights his resume.
Garrett plays dual roles in this story and as well as the other 28 cast members. But these piece is more than just a story it is a must to have item for any entertainment collector's den.
Garrett is joined by another music sensation, Michael Hutchence of INXS. This was Hutchence's last performance outside of his musical performances before he died. Also, Baltazaar Getty, Michael DeBarres, Donald Morrison and others whose name is synomious with the business.
For some the story starts out slow, but then you get hooked. It is east to follow and the story get's just stronger as it goes.
For those who like to put the tape in and drive, this is one that really needs to be in the bag. Whether you are traveling by air, train or car it would be like leaving the best part of your vacation at home.
As for the movie as awhole it is like a good book, sometimes it is not easy to put down.
Leif Garrett was the world's most famous "Teen Idol" and sold more albums during that genre and his fans would like this. It is vintage "Garrett".
And just like back in the 1970's Garrett kick down the doors of music and achived rock and roll fame. Garrett, now older and seasoned is kicking at a new door as co-producer with writer Baer for audio movies. As co-producer Garrett's vision is to take it one step further and that is obvious by the production of "Double or Nothing".

If you're a fan film noir, radio drama, or classic mysteries then you'll love Double or Nothing, don't miss it.
WONDERFULLY ENTICING!!.......1999-03-13
Double or Nothing is a fantastic story/movie/ listening experience!! it keeps you enticed from the very beginning. Well worth the time it takes to hear the whole thing from start to finish. If all audio movies are like this, I have a new hobby!
Smart modern L.A. noir potboiler.......1999-03-12
Baer does a great job with crackling dialog in this modern L.A. noir story. Sound effects help to create a whole world you can feel amid big mix-ups and bad trouble in the seedy underbelly of Hollywood. Highly recommended
Book Description
Some observers believe America's promises are dramatically fulfilled by marriage across boundaries. Following their hearts rather than familial and communal preferences, intermarried couples illustrate the triumph of such Romantic values as the sanctity of the individual and the sacredness of personal passions. Intermarriages are also touted as emblems of increased tolerance.
If intermarriage is a blessing, American Jews are among the prime beneficiaries. Recent statistical studies show that about half of all recent marriages involving a Jew have been to non-Jews. Many of these Jews maintain at least some ties to their own ethnoreligious heritage. At the same time, very few of the non-Jews marrying Jewish men and women today convert to Judaism. The same cultural tolerance that nurtures mixed marriage also promotes the idea that each partner can maintain his or her own distinctive, premarriage identity. Thus, the homes they form include two religious identities, and, often, two or more ethnic identities.
The American Jewish resistance to intermarriage held by earlier generations has given way to the view that intermarriage is normative in the American milieu. But what is the impact of mixed marriage on Jews and Judaism? Concerned that intermarriage may weaken American Jewish vitality, many wonder: Will the blessing of American openness cause Jewish culture to be virtually loved out of existence in twenty-first-century America? This provocative question frames Fishman's study.
Drawing on more than 250 original interviews with mixed-married men and women, focus group discussions with their teenaged children, materials produced by communal, secular, and religious organizations, and conferences, books, and films created by and for interfaith audiences, Fishman examines family dynamics in mixed-married households. She looks at the responses of Jewish and non-Jewish family and friends. She investigates how the "December dilemma" plays itself out in diverse mixed Jewish households and explores popular cultural depictions of mixed marriages in fiction, film, television, and in material artifacts such as the "Mixed Message Greeting Card Company."
Fishman concludes with a look at Jewish communal responses from rabbis, schools, and synagogues, and the Jewish community to the potential demographic crisis resulting from mixed marriages. While understanding and accepting the cultural imperatives that have produced high intermarriage rates, Fishman emphasizes the key role of education in creating Jews who seek to remain affiliated. As one reviewer points out, her book offers a "well-thought-out response to a problem that has generated more hysteria than reasoned analysis."

Trying to preserve the Jewish community .......2005-04-01
This work is a study of two- hundred and fifty intermarried couples. It reveals that most intermarried couples who have children do not provide a Jewish education for their children. Such an education Barack - Fishman indicates is a crucial factor in determining the future religious identity of the child. It is regrettable that a smaller percentage of intermarrying Jews care to provide an education in their own faith than do intermarrying Catholics or Presbyterians. Barack- Fishman indicates that intermarried couples divorce at a much higher rate than do inmarried ones, three to one in general, and two to one for Jewish intermarrieds. She also reveals that the orthodox have considerably lower intermarriage rates, and considerably higher levels of communal committment than do the Conservative .The Reformed have the lowest rate of inmarriage. As many Reformed Jews come from intermarried families this is not surprising, when one understands another finding, the children of intermarried couples tend to intermarry at a much higher rate than do inmarried couples.
This study confirms what Jewish community leaders and educators have known at least since the 1990 Demographic Study on the American Jewish community i.e. that intermarriage has reached records level in the community and is more weakening the community ( On the whole of course. There are many opposite examples of the Jewish community being strengthened by intermarriage. In these cases it is often the partner who has converted who shows the strongest commitment to Jewish community connection and education) than it is strengthening it.
This is a very well researched and important study. Again its major finding is that the American Jewish community must greatly enhance its quality and quantity of Jewish education if the community is going to remain a significant one in the future.
I disagree with this book's central conclusion.......2004-04-30
As publisher of InterfaithFamily.com, and co-editor of The Guide to Jewish Interfaith Family Life: An InterfaithFamily.com Handbook, my main concern is Fishman's assertion that the vast majority of mixed-married families who say they are raising their children as Jews "incorporate Christian holiday festivities" into their lives, which makes them "religiously syncretic" -- combining Judaism and Christianity -- such that Jewish identity is not transmitted to their children, even though they say that these festivities have no religious significance to them. This central conclusion is not supported by the research itself, which is based on a limited sample and is inherently subjective; is inconsistent with other available evidence, including the results of the InterfaithFamily.com Essay Contest; and provides a wholly inadequate basis for the very dangerous policy it will be used to justify -- that it is not worth encouraging interfaith families to make Jewish choices.
Instead of arguing about whether mixed-married families raising their children as Jews should see a Christmas tree in their own home or only in their relatives', rejecting the former but not the latter, everyone's focus should be on increasing the Jewish engagement of all liberal Jews -- including those in interfaith relationships. The real question about the transmission of Jewish identity in mixed-married families is not what they do around Christian holidays, but what they do the rest of the year.

Customer Reviews:
Better Than Average, But Not The Best.......2005-07-28
First off, I'd like to say that this is mostly a New Frontier book, not really a Next Generation/New Frontier team-up book as the cover suggests. Riker and Picard are the only Next Gen main crew in the story. And although Picard shares the cover with Calhoun, Riker appears in the book more than Picard, and Calhoun really is the one main character.
Early on in this book the story splits off in two, the main story being a spy novel and the secondary one a soap opera. Guess which part sucked. The relationships between the New Frontier main characters are too intertwined and their relationships are too much of a focus when the story goes onto the ship Excalibur. On the Star Trek television shows, character relationships helped to further the story and add depth, but Peter David uses the story as a background to relationships in the same way that daytime television shows do--and it doesn't work for him either.
Years ago I read three or four other New Frontier books, so I only vaguely remember them. But after reading this book I had a deep distaste for Peter David's crew. Why do so many crewmembers have to be so outrageously distinct? The doctor can't just be a Vulcan; no, she has to be a hormonal pregnant Vulcan. And why make the conn officer a normal guy when he can have a rediculous special ability that requires him to look asleep? Part of what makes Star Trek characters so likeable is their humanness, but Peter David's characters are so bizarre that it is hard to relate to them. I should say that not all of the New Frontier characters are poorly created, though two of the few likeable characters, Shelby and Lefler, were created on episodes of The Next Generation, and Zak Kebron is really just an exaggeration of Worf.
However, having said all this, I did think that the main story with Calhoun was well thought out and executed, and seeing Riker in command with Shelby as his first officer was fun. But there were times when it was tough to stick it out through the book's filler.
An Excalibur Adventure.......2003-07-06
This is the fifth book in the "Star Trek: Double Helix" series I'm reading about a mysterious villain who has been releasing biological agents across the Alpha Quadrant in an attempt to perfect the ultimate 100% fatal virus.
Now the journey comes to an end, as we finally learn who the mysterious villain is. And it's up to a teaming of Jean Luc Picard and Will Riker with the crew of the USS Excalibur to stop his final plans for wiping out all of the Federation in one fell swoop.
Highlights: 1) TNG cameos of two admirals and a major villain. 2) a James Bond-style spy adventure starring Captain Mackenzie Calhoun, complete with gadgets, brutish henchman, a feisty babe and mad villain. 3) Will Riker taking temporary command of the USS Excalibur and having to deal with its eccentric crew and his old nemesis, Shelby. 4) the Excalibur crew themselves shine in all of their wacky glory. 5) you learn even more about Calhoun's character and why he's one of the most unique Starfleet captains ever.
Nitpicks: 1) a glaring boo-boo about where the Bajoran wormhole goes to. 2) unless there's another one, Thaddeus Riker was supposed to be a Civil War not a Federation pioneer. 3) I still think the mysterious villain is way too big for his britches, and one look at his awe-inspiring impressive headquarters will make you agree. 5) unless the Narobi have been used before in a previous book (or in the next book), this interesting race wasn't utilized to their fullest potential.
All in all, this was my favorite book of the series. Peter David writes for fans, so it was fast-paced and fun to read. Those who haven't read Peter David's "New Frontier" books or aren't familiar with the Excalibur crew might get a little confused keeping track of all the characters. However, if you are a "New Frontier" fan, it must be pointed out that this book does stand by itself, so you can read it without bothering with the rest of the "Double Helix" books.
Last but not least, if you're wondering why a six-part series ends with a fifth book, the next book is a prequel that explains why The General hates Picard and the Federation so much.
James Bond in space; and I don't mean Moonraker..........2002-10-23
... well, then again... The previous reviewer hinted at the Bondesque portion of this book. But he didn't tell the half of it. There is the mad-villian, typical of Bond, who matches the Moonraker villian who built a space station to house his own kind of perfect people to survive a similar distruction of all known life. There is even a Bond girl, who winds up like most other Bond girls (at least the first one 007 sleeps with--in the old ones, Calhoun even ... well, uh... gets seduced by her Bond style--in a "rescue pod" after he rescues her from sure death.) There are the contraptions and the Q character AND even an M character... matching with the new female M in the newer Bonds. There is a near perfect match for the guy with the metalic teeth, too, exept he talks. And, if you're still with me, the final scenes on The Voices space station and in the opening scenes are sooooo typically Bond it's pathetic: a normal looking guy goes through [challenges] that would kill anyone else and survives through luck, a bit of ingenuity and with the help of his toys.
Luckily, I'm a Bond fan and a Calhoun fan (stopped reading the series after they killed him off. I was peeved.) Sadly, I"m on another Calhoun adventure, one where we find out he's not really dead... and Peter David has him in a typical Coyboy movie a la "Shane"... I know David writes a lot, but Damn! Could he be less inventive? I allowed for the fact he patterned Calhoun after Alexander the Great in the first part of the series, and even enjoyed it, but this is getting weird.
Good thing he writes well.
Peter David does it again!.......2002-07-01
This is another great installment to the New Frontier and the Double Helix series. Not having read the last of the Double Helix books yet, it seems that this one pretty much finishes the Double Helix???? A favorite quote from the book, Riker - "I've got to get off this ship." Peter David did an excellent job of integrating Picard and Riker into the New Frontier. It's really interesting and well done how he brought Riker and Shelby together again. That portion was done very well and even better than I'd expected another meeting of those two. Overall another great book by Peter David.
Wow! The best Double Helix ever!.......2002-03-24
Double or Nothing had to be the most wonderful books out of the entire series. It had a lot of Peter David's characteristic humor and interesting plot twists. His mix of characters from TNG and New Frontier turned out to be very smart, because they played up to each other well. This book definetely makes the whole series worthwhile!
Customer Reviews:
Two Sams At Once.......2003-01-05
I know this one has been out of print for a while, and it is customary to review newer things or at least things that can be located without a search, but I couldn't stand to see such a fine book supported only by a one star review. This is the only novel where Sam Leaps into two people at once, identical twins. His psyche is split in half, and we get two different versions of Sam: the side that is dedicated to solving the Leap and continuing on to help more people, and the darker more selfish side that is tired of jumping around and wants to settle down and satisfy his own desires. Their two lives unfold and they finally confront each other at the end. I had to leave off the fifth star because this one doesn't reach the emotional depth of several others in the series, the ending is good but not very touching (unlike Angels Unaware, which is perhaps the best in the series).
A Double Leap For Sam.......2003-01-04
Pay no heed to the one star review, this book is a great Leap. It isn't one of the best, I'll give you that, but it did split Sam Becket's psyche in two. In this novel and this one alone, we get two different versions of Sam at once: the one who wants to focus only on the Leap and how to solve it, and the one who is tired of Leaping and wants to settle down. What results is a sometimes comical, sometimes dramatic, altogether unique approach to the Leap themes. The two Sams move along different paths that will eventually cross in an explosive and touching finale. The only thing keeping it from a five star is the fact that it didn't reach as deep down as some of the other Leap novels and many of the episodes. Fans of the show know what I'm talking about, that little bit of seasoning that leaves you misty eyed. I can't quite describe it, but if you've ever read "Angels Unaware" you'll know. Overall, this one is worth reading.
Keep looking........1996-08-09
The title says it all. The publisher gambled double or nothing and lost. Hernderson's portrayal of the time tripping Sam Beckett was very sub-par. The story was bland with very little relation to the television series what so ever. I give it two thumbs down, only because I am limited to only two thumbs. If you want a good QUANTUM LEAP book, try "Odyssey" or "Pulitzer"

Book Description
Kip is a typical teenager, trying to catch the Buzz. It is not drugs or alcohol that are going to get him there, but the pure adrenaline rush that hits when you are playing for high stakes: the risks, the thrill - throw in some money and the fun really begins.
Double or Nothing follows Kip's ride as he gets more and more involved in high-stakes gambling. Although he is a good kid, does well in school and works at his uncle's restaurant to save for college, his rush comes from betting. What begins as ten-dollar wagers with his buddy quickly escalates. Kip constantly makes bets with himself - what wine will his next customer order? Will it be a glass or a bottle? He has the attitude, knows the odds and has done his research. The thrill comes only when money is laid down. To increase the thrill just raise the stakes. If smell is the strongest sense, imagine the smell of victory, the smell of money. Who could resist?
When Kip meets the enticing and wonderful Joey, things couldn't be better. She is unlike any girl he has known. They begin hanging out and then Kip meets Joey's father, King Hewitt, Master Illusionist. Nothing could be cooler. A magician plays the margins like no other. Unfortunately, King turns out to be a compulsive gambler, and takes his young charge to places he has never been before: the races to bet on horses and casinos to play the slots. After winning their first big race on a tip, Kip thinks King is a genius. Despite the spectacle of King losing fifty bucks in less than four minutes on the slots, Kip only becomes more hooked. Can he really feel the energy emanating from the machine?
Kip starts skipping school, missing work, diving into his college fund. The buzz is still increasing, but so are his debts. He knows he needs just one more big win to get it all back. Then King hits a losing streak and disappears. Joey's home is crashing down around her and the repo men are turning up. Can Kip keep lying to her and his mom? Can he beat the odds and turn things around before he hits bottom?

You gotta love this. .......2004-07-30
Kip is a gambler. He hangs with kids who gamble and he bets on everything. Kip thinks drug addicts, drinkers, and smokers are losers --- gambling gives him all the buzz he needs. He does not consider himself an addict. Kip knows that addicts don't amount to anything, and he plans on being rich someday.
However, when he discovers big-time gambling with his new girl friend's father King, the famous magician, his whole life changes. The horse track, casinos, and slot machines give him a buzz like he never has known before. Gambling may be taking over his life as he wipes out his mother's bank account and his college fund.
Will Kip wake up in time to recover his losses legally, or will he end up like King? Kip will probably never lose his love of gambling --- will this allow him to follow his dream of becoming a stockbroker? As he says, "The stock market isn't just legal gambling, it powers the whole economy. I get to be rich and be a patriot all at the same time. You gotta love this. Total win-win-win." Read DOUBLE OR NOTHING and find out what happens to Kip --- will he win or will he lose it all?

AT LONG LAST!!.......2001-11-05
I'll say right up front that I'm a friend of Nancy Baker Jacobs, and I haven't yet read DOUBLE OR NOTHING. I'm rating it five stars, though, in anticipation of what I know it's bound to be. I've read several of Nancy's other books, and have been waiting impatiently to receive the long-awaited DOUBLE OR NOTHING. Nancy is a great writer, and she's been gone from the mystery scene far too long. As an author myself, and a former freelance editor, I know good writing when I see it--and Nancy goes beyond good. Her books are thoughtful, intelligent, tense, fast-paced and exciting. Welcome back, Nancy! And get that promised copy of DOUBLE OR NOTHING to me--fast!!
