    Book Description

The trading strategies of legends Jesse Livermore, Bernard Baruch, Gerald Loeb, and more provide ways to triumph in the market

Today's bookshelves are so laden with Johnny-come-lately experts, eager to sell their knowledge to any and all, that it's sometimes hard for traders to know which way to turn or whom to trust. Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time makes the choice simple, examining the careers of five traders--Jesse Livermore, Bernard Baruch, Gerald Loeb, Nicolas Darvas, and Bill O'Neil--who, more than any others over the past century, demonstrated tremendous success at conquering Wall Street.

This technique-filled book presents numerous ways in which the timeless strategies of these investing icons can be used to tame today's high-speed, unforgiving marketplaces. Comparing and contrasting the successes--and occasional failures--of these five giants of finance, it reveals:

4 out of 5 stars Must read for an investor.......2007-08-18

If you are an investor, this is a must read. After all, who better to learn from than the most successful investors of all time. Granted, some of those profiled here aren't investors. In their own words, Livermore and Baruch called themselves speculators. But their goal was to make profits for their money.

It is very interesting to note that the 5 profiled cover investing in the stock market for nearly a century and that all the prinicples apply to this very day. John Boik has made a service by compiling the life stories of these five great traders/investors. It is inspirational for those who want to succeed in the market to read about these indiviudals, their life mission, their strategies, their successes, their failures, the lessons learnt.

I don't want to state what is all in the book. What is great is the opportunity to read about all these five in one place. The last chapter is well written summarizing the strategies of the five. The book itself is an easy read without you having to beat your brains out trying to remember all you read. The lessons are very crystal clear to sink in. The chapter on William O' Neal is a bit longer compared to others.

The book does not explain a combined system of trading, nor does it capture all the trades for every year each of these traded. This is not the point. The point is about the rules/strategies they followed and the lessons learnt. If you are new to trading or even if you in those initial years where you rely on tips and/or using another person to invest for you, you have to know what makes money in the market. For that, this book is a must read and a must addition to your investing library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginning traders.......2007-04-26

I really wish I had read this book earlier in my studies on trading stocks. The author does an excellent job bringing together the greatest stock traders of all time in one place. It is hard to argue with the results of these men, making millions in the markets several times over 40-50 years. Jesse Livermore made over $100 million during the crash of 1929 by being short in stocks, Nicholas Darvas made $2 million in 18 months part-time. I had already stumbled upon Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darvas, and William O'Neal, and read each of their books. They have all taught me a great deal and their teachings have lead me to profits in the market. I love the way the author has shown the similarities in all these great traders and condensed the lessons to be learned from them in the final chapter. All these great traders bought into the strongest stocks, they did not look for bargains. They believed in buying high and selling higher. They believed in buying stocks with great fundamentals and technical strength. They looked for large price increases on strong volume, they captured there profits on the rise at the first sign of weakness. Thanks to this book I will read the books by Gerald Loeb and Bernard Baruch and continue with my growth as a trader. I will also read all the books about these great men recommended at the end of the book. This book would have helped me focus on what books to read when I began learning years ago. Who better to learn from than the best there ever was?

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written and short on substance.......2007-04-26

This is an OK book for beginners and folks interested in the lives of the "greatest" traders. However, I found it to be poorly written, redundant, and very short on details. I have to imagine that becoming a successful trader takes a lot more than the very simplistic view this book portrays. Unfortunately for the reader, the lessons described in this book could be summarized in a few bullet points. I feel like the author was trying to use the traders' backgrounds to add color to the story. In the end, I don't think he was successful in writing interesting biographies or in describing trading techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how the greats did it.......2006-12-30

This book gives you a great introduction to strategies that made 5 of the greatest investors in history a lot of money. I truly find Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darvas and William O'Neil to be the most interesting but this book covers all of them.

I went on to read How I made 2 Million in the Stock market by Darvas, Reminissences of a Stock Operator and How to Make Money in Stocks by O'Neil, but this book gives you a good overview of the systems these greats used.

It's a pretty quick read and it will get you thinking in a different direction.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20

The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, if somewhat out of date..........2002-02-17

There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.

    1 out of 5 stars These strategies don't work.......2001-05-24

I lost money using these strategies. Buy Steve Nison book if you want a good book on TA. This one just doesn't measure up.

4 out of 5 stars All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16

The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.

The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).

All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

Having revitalized the classic Solar Queen series to critical acclaim, Andre Norton and Sherwood Smith now turn their storytelling talents to Norton's popular Time Traders series.Time agents Ross Murdock and Eveleen Riorden are recalled from their honeymoon to take part in a dangerous assignment: find a team of Russian scientists who have vanished without a trace from a research mission in the past of a far-off planet. Along with a team of Russian time Agents with their own mysterious agenda and Saba, a new agent teamed with Gordon Ashe, they leap into the alien world's distant history. There they encounter several alien races, whose appearance, language, and customs are almost incomprehensibly strange. Something changed this world, and music seems the only tool that might prove a key to unlocking the planet's secrets. But as they try to decipher a digital alien Rosetta stone, time is running out for their mission. Ross now knows what happened to the missing scientists--but can he save his team before they too vanish forever? This thrilling adventure of a desperate race against treacherous time itself is a tale filled with excitement and wonder in the grand Time Traders tradition.

1 out of 5 stars boring and confusing.......2005-04-17

Andre Norton is one of my favorite authors, but this book was so boring and impossibly complex that I didn't even finish reading it, which is unusual for me. If you haven't read any other books in Norton's Time Traders series (which I hadn't) do not start with this one. It's full of cryptic references to earlier books in the series, making it very difficult to figure out what's going on. I slogged through about a third of the book and finally quit reading because the characters hadn't even left home yet. They were supposed to be traveling in a time machine to rescue some colleagues who had disappeared on an alien world. Sounds exciting, right? Yeah, that would have been a lot more exciting than 80 pages of irrelevant chit-chat about the characters' marriages and lengthy analysis of the way an alien language might be constructed. If you already know these characters from previous Time Traders books, you might enjoy this one. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

1 out of 5 stars Sad echo of the great Norton.......2004-06-10

This is the only truly dull book with Andre Norton's name on it that I have ever read. In so far as I was able to grasp the plot, the time travelers (only one of whom is partially described) have gone to a planet where a Russian team vanished. This is supposed to be an urgent, emergency mission although that makes no sense if they are time travellers. For some reason, not explained, they go to a time a hundred years AFTER the disappearance. They visit a city that is not described at all, a city inhabited by strange races that are not described, they meet people there who are not described, they conveniently get jobs with no questions although they must resemble none of the people there. One of their party is incarcerated in a House of Knowledge or something like that which is not explained though the characters seem to know something about it. In fact the characters and the author, no doubt, seem to know what this whole story is about although they do not communicate their vision to the reader. This is too silly even for science fiction. I fell asleep on page 173 so I cannot say how it ended, nor do I care. It is that bad. I gave it one star because the program wouldn't let me give it anything less.

3 out of 5 stars Not Sci-Fi but Witch World Fantasy.......2003-09-03

The characters are out of Time Traders, but the story is pure Witch World. I read Norton from the time I was a small child but stopped when she went heavily into fantasy starting with Witch World. If you are a fantasy fan - read the book; if you are a si-fi fan - pass and keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars Derelict in Time.......2003-01-08

For those who have read and enjoyed the early Time Trader books (The Time Traders, Galactic Derelict, The Defiant Agents, and Key Out of Time), this book will be an enjoyable extension, with just enough difference in emphasis to remind the reader that this is no longer Ms. Norton writing alone.

After some (somewhat slow) preliminaries that help re-establish this series into a somewhat more modern time frame of post-Cold War, the story picks up the loose ends left by Galactic Derelict, with a new expedition to the final destination of that book. Although their ostensible mission is to find the missing members of an earlier Russian exploration team, the book quickly turns to unraveling the mystery of how and why all the current time denizens of the planet appear to be devolved representatives of earlier highly civilized species.

The is the best aspect of this book, as in working out the mystery, there are some fascinating portrayals of multiple different species working within an overall society that may be the ultimate in enforced harmony. There is far more emphasis here on the real sciences of the cultural, anthropological, linguistic and biological variety than was present in the original books, and the basic plot provides for quite a bit of suspense and surprise, invigorating this tale with page-turning expectations. The mind-twisting consequences of time travel are reasonably worked out here, although without really answering the basic paradox inherent in time travel capabilities.

What isn't quite as good is the basic characterizations, usually one of Norton's stronger points. Ross Murdock and Gordon Ashe don't quite seem to be the people they were in the earlier books, and most of the Russian contingent seem very sketchily drawn. Murdock's relationship with his new wife Eveleen seems very artificial. However, Saba, a new character for this book, is very competently drawn, and she pretty much carries the book.

Stylistically, this book tends to more complex vocabulary and sentence structure than Ms. Norton normally uses, which I have to attribute to her collaborator. This added complexity seems to help add some muscle and a believable tone to the story.

A competent tale and a worthy new entry to the Time Trader series, a series that helped establish Norton as one of the premier writers in the SF field long before women writers became fashionable.

I have been enjoying Andre Norton since 1964.I love her story telling. This book trashed the Time Traders stories. The story does not deal with the people that I've come to know in Andre Norton's stories but Sherwood Smith's own little people who have taken over. After PM Griffin I had great hope for these adventures. But if Sherwood Smith(three times I've tried) name is on anymore of Andre Norton's books I will not buy them.

    LOST IN TIME

Exploring space and time is a dangerous business, and no one knows this better than Time Agents Travis Fox and Ross Murdock. So when both men are stranded on far-off planets with no hope of rescue from Earth, they must rely on their wits and their training to survive.

But survival is only the beginning. To better handle the rigors of the alien world of Topaz, Fox and his crewmates have been implanted with the memories of their Apache ancestors -- but the Opposition has sent its own team with the reawakened memories of their Mongol ancestors!

Meanwhile, Murdock is trapped in the ancient past of the water world of Hawaika, facing terrifying wizards in a kingdom he knows will soon be utterly annihilated by an alien empire that is bent on the conquest of the entire galaxy.

The fates of two worlds, and possibly the galaxy itself, will be determined by the actions of these castaways in time -- and whatever happens, the lives of Time Agents everywhere will be changed forever....

4 out of 5 stars Defiant Agents and Key Out of Time.......2003-03-02

These are two books from the early 60's that were originally published as Juveniles (current category is known as Young Adult).

The Defiant Agents has not worn as well as the second book mainly because it is built around a Cold War inspired race between the US and Russia to colonize space. The thing that really saves this book from being dated though is Norton's distrust of all big government.

The US team was sent into space under Redax, a conditioning that returns their thought processes to that of their ancestors-- Apaches living in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Although they were volunteers for experimentation and exploration, they were not made fully aware of what they were going to be used for by their superiors. Consequently, when their space ships cracks up on entry the survivors. some thinking they are living in the past, some more aware of the present are confronted with a puzzle. They must figure out how to survive in an alien world where their neighbors are escapees from the Russian mind control project-- and the Russians want their people back.

Key Out of Time moves to the water world of Hawaikan. Ross Murdock, a character from the earlier books, is thrown into the past of this world when a storm blows up while they are setting up a time gate. The Russians are only mentioned in the beginning so the book feels less dated than Defiant Agents. The action here involves a struggle among the ancient people of Hawaikan to escape the influance of the mysterious aliens whose wrecked ship provided the technology that let the people of Earth reach into space.

These books are well worth reading. Individually I gave Defiant Agents a 4 and Key Out of Time a 5. The first one was pulled down by the Russian/US conflict that probably doesn't resonate with current attitude toward the Russians.

5 out of 5 stars A walk down memory lane with this sf omnibus.......2001-02-19

To gain perspective on when these novellas were released, Kennedy is President and Khrushchev is in power. The first moon walk has not occurred yet and the Mets winning the world Series is several year away when these two classic novellas were released. Both hold up well even with four decades of incredible gains by the scientific and technological communities, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some Cold War vestiges may seem outdated, yet nicely fit into the two story lines.

"The Defiant Agents". Travis Fox and crew land on planet Topaz where they must reach inside to their Apache heritage to battle a difficult climate and a Russian team of explorers who likewise dig deep into their Mongol heritage.

"Key Out of Time". Time Agent Ross Murdock needs to unite three radically different cultures and potential enemies into one force to repel the dangerous invading Baldies.

The anthology remains strong and actually shows how the great Andre Norton influenced future science fiction authors. Tales like these are why she remains one of the best loved writers of the twentieth century and now the twenty-first century.

    Book Description

Andre Norton and Sherwood Smith have collaborated on Solar Queen and Time Traders novels, but never before have they created as rousing an adventure as awaits Ross Murdock, Gordon Ashe, and the rest of the Time Patrol in Ancient Atlantis. In Earth's future, when time travel has become possible, the Time Patrol is the top secret government agency that protects Earth's past, so that our history will not become corrupted by invaders from either our future or from other worlds. For many years, Murdock, Ashe, and other members of the Time Patrol have contended with threats to our time continuum, none more deadly than the alien Baldies, who hate other high-tech civilizations and want to destroy Earth.Evidence of time travel has been found in ruins dating to the ancient world . . . in the legendary realm of Atlantis. So Murdock, Ashe, Eveleen Riordan, and other Time Patrollers deck themselves out as foreign traders to discover whether something is amiss in Atlantis. They find that the Baldies are there, as evidenced by sophisticated, high-tech equipment, whose purpose it is impossible to fathom. As they try to derail the Baldies' plot, the Time Patrollers realize that time is running out on their mission, when Atlantis is shaken by tremors that presage a cataclysm that may be the disaster that sank the fabulous island state. But they must be sure they act to preserve, not destroy, history--and if they're wrong, it'll be too late . . . for them and for Earth's future.

5 out of 5 stars Hit and Run Time Travel.......2003-02-08

Atlantis Endgame is the seventh novel in the Time Traders series, following Echoes in Time. It tells the further adventures of Ross Murdock, his wife, Eveleen Riordan, and his partner, Gordon Ashe. It also adds a new character, Linnea Edel, an old acquaintance of Gordon.

In this story, Linnea has found an anachronistic earring with a modern jeweler's mark in a site on Thera, the probable location of legendary ancient Atlantis. While interesting in and of itself, it becomes extremely intriguing when found to be identical to an earring belonging to Eveleen. This existence of this object in ancient layers of soil suggests that it was lost circa 1628 BC, shortly before the island was destroyed by an huge volcanic eruption. The Project suspects Baldie intervention in the eruption and intends to send a team back in time to investigate.

The Russian time travel group cooperates with the Project to send a small ship with six agents aboard back to Kalliste, the ancient name of Thera before the eruption. There they travel to Akrotiri, the major town on the island, where they discover signs of Baldie tech in the volcano vents both on land and in the sea. Later a group of Baldies are seen on the beach, apparently looking for indications of THEM. They also find a Baldie ship in the sea, but can't locate the Baldie onshore base. They do find a couple of Fur Faces, a alien sentient species encountered only once before; however, they do not seem to be allies of the Baldies.

The natives are anxiously awaiting word from their oracle, but nothing new has been spoken in the past few months. Some Kallistans have left the island anyway, terrified by the frequent earthquakes and the steam, smoke, ash and rock ejected by the volcano. Linnea claims to be an Egyptian Earth-Goddess priestess to infiltrate the Oracle's household and is there when the seer orders the evacuation of the island.

This novel is driven by the imminent threat of eruption, so is more like a hit and run than the almost leisurely exploration in the other tales in this series. The team are all disappointed by the lack of opportunity to study this almost unknown culture, but Linnea, the newcomer, is particularly frustrated by the time limit.

Recommended for all Norton fans and anyone who enjoys tales of ancient societies in a SF setting.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Baldies?.......2003-01-17

This book is an exicting story which moves at a brisk pace. But it is part of a series, and in this book the principle heavies are revised to be ecologists. It does not fir the earlier portrayals of the baldies at all!
In the first two books of the series the baldies were the (ruthless) dominant race of an interstellar empire. The revision of their charactor and motives does not fit the earlier books in the series. That was a very jarring element to me.
Even so, the book was an excellent read.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome addition to great old series.......2003-01-10

When archeologists discover a modern earing burried beneath tons of lava, they see an anomoly. Scientists at the time project see something different. A possible attempt by aliens to redirect human history, destroying the modern world. A small team of project agents are sent back to the ancient Greece of Minoan civilization--and Atlantis itself--to ensure that humanity's destiny is not subverted.

Before the ancient civilization of Kalliste was destroyed in a huge volcanic explosion, it had achieved technological levels not seen again until modern times. Clearly the world would have been transformed had it survived--but would the transformation have been for the better? Authors Andre Norton and Sherwood Smith add a degree of ethical complexity to a science fiction adventure. The project agents think that they are doing the right thing, but so do the two separate groups of aliens that they face.

The Time Traders series formed a part of many baby boomers introduction to science fiction and still holds power today. Norton and Smith's decision to add ethical complexity to the adventure gives strength to ATLANTIS ENDGAME. Young adult readers will find Norton and Smith's style to be approachable while more mature readers will find a deceptive intellectual subtlty. Emotional depths, however, are only hinted at.

5 out of 5 stars delightful trek in time.......2002-12-21

At a dig on the Mediterranean island of Thera, archeologist Linnea Edel finds a modern day earring buried amidst the ruins of artifacts from 1600 BC. Not knowing how the jewelry could be among these ruins, Linnea shows her anachronistic finding to her old friend Dr. Gordon Ashe, who is stunned by what she shows him.

Gordon shows the earring to his Time Patrol associates. Each reacts similarly that someone, probably the alien "Baldies," went back in time and disrupted the continuum. The team knows they must travel to Ancient Greece to Plato's Atlantis to ascertain whether the aliens are changing history by destroying a key link in the advancement of technology.

ATLANTIS ENDGAME is an exciting action adventure tale that never slows down for even a nanosecond. Andre Norton and Sherwood Smith cleverly use Atlantis as the latest base of operations of the Baldies that forces the chronology patrol squad to try to correct a seemingly minor anachronism that could snowball into the end of technology before it can begin on Planet Earth. Fans of the Time Traders series adventure (see ECHOES IN TIME) will want to travel along with Andre Norton and Sherwood Smith on this delightful trek in time.

    2 out of 5 stars A Lightweight.......1998-09-17

This book is a lightweight. There isn't much that isn't already covered by the technical analysis classics. If this was the only book I read, I would not feel comfortable playing with real money, with only the knowledge contained in this book. If you really want to learn technical analysis, you can't go wrong with the classics: John Murphy's "Technical Analysis of the Futures Market" and Martin Pring's "Technical Analysis Explained"
