5 out of 5 stars Execellent.......2007-08-21

Looks near a one stop guide to this neophyte. Pretty pictures. This has tidbits outhers don't (yet, they do too). So, complete? I wounder if any book is complete. Darn near though! Recomended.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2007-08-05

Great guide for beginners. Covers all topics in a simple, easy to read layout. Pictures help a little. Good first grow book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book .......2007-03-11

Great book for the beginner grower. Its easy to read, and gives you all the basics.

5 out of 5 stars I am beyond happy with this book!.......2007-01-12

I wasn't expecting this book to ammount to this much, but it did suprise me quite a bit. As I read through I had found so many new methods that put one of the largest grins on my face ever. The high definition pictures (besides making you drool) gave me much insight as to what I can expect to procure. Even though this is labled as a beginners book, it will walk you through exactly what you need to do, and what you need to know. It felt like being showed how to do basic algebra, and before you know it, you've learned all that and you know some advanced physics. I would highly recommend this book to ANYONE who wishes to start growing the greatest of all plants.

peace and love,
rob

1 out of 5 stars The Republic's A10 Warthog.....?.......1999-07-19

The A10 Warthog was manufactured by Fairchild Republic. Without the Fairchild Aircraft Company, there would not have been a A10.......so why in the world would you title it the Republic's A10... where in the world do you get your information ?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent review of A-10 story, in pictures.......1998-09-08

This follows the typical pattern of Don's books, with lots of colour photos of squadron aircraft - mainly taken on operational pans. Excellant, if you want a central reference for the colours and markings for the aircraft.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......1997-12-30

This is the best book on the A-10 I've ever seen. It is packed full of info, lots of stuff that you couldn't find elswhere. Its has full listings of squadrons, inluding ANG and AFRE. Its only downside is that over half the pictures are squadron pics, which show an A-10 on the ground, doing nothing. Overall this book is great for any A-10 anthusiest.

    Book Description

This work offers a unique perspective on the legacy and influence of the Christian church in Western culture. Never fixed or static, the church experienced remarkable periods of change between the sixth and sixteenth centuries. Saint Francis of Assisi, the gentle poverello of Umbria, the martyr Thomas Becket, the ill-fated lovers Abelard and Heloise, the visionary Hildegard of Bingen, all testify to the diversity and richness of the medieval church.

In this fascinating survey, Donald Logan introduces the reader to the Christian church, from the conversion of the Celtic and Germanic peoples through to the discovery of the New World. He reveals how the church unified the people of Western Europe as they worshipped with the same ceremonies and used Latin as the language of civilized communication. From the crusades to the creation of magnificent architecture, A History of the Church in the Middle Ages explores the central role of the church in determining a thousand years of history.

When King Tut's tomb was discovered in Egypt in 1922, the world was abuzz. What would be the next big, newsworthy archaeological find? Might it be Giza 7000X, a secret Egyptian tomb buried deep within the earth? Claudia Logan and Melissa Sweet (with the cooperation of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston) answer that question and ask a few more in The 5,000-Year-Old Puzzle, their truly splendid picture book for older readers. Readers follow a fictional family to Egypt in 1924 to an actual expedition led by Dr. George Reisner. Written in diary form from the perspective of young Will Hunt, who joins the expedition, the book is immediate and engaging, communicating the mystery and excitement of an archaeological dig like nothing we've seen.

Illustrated with wonderful, color-soaked paintings as well as collages of authentic documents and artifacts from the Giza 7000X site, this richly visual diary is as entertaining as it is educational. Young readers will revel in the "you are there" glimpse of an archaeological dig, learning that excavation can sometimes be as much about fleas and dust as it can be about mummies or, say, a solid gold lion's leg. Sidebars about pharoah's curses, cartouches, and heiroglyphs sit alongside enthusiastic postcards from the boy to his friends back home in Boston: "What are we doing? Picking up things hour after hour with TWEEZERS. If someone sneezes or trips--there goes 5,000 years of history down the drain." As Will lives behind the pyramids, he witnesses the discovery of a secret tomb... but whose is it? Can the team solve the mystery before Will and his parents return to America? Highly recommended. (Ages 8 and older) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

Search for the secrets of a hidden tomb

It is 1924, two years after the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. Readers are invited to join a young boy, Will Hunt, as he and his family become part of an archaeological team led by world-famous Egyptologist Dr. George Reisner. Based on actual records of Reisner’s history-making dig, Giza 7000X, this strikingly original picture book uses journal entries, funny postcards, and quirky cartoons to pull readers into an ancient unsolved mystery. Luminous paintings of the pyramids, informative sidebars and inventive collages, including authentic documents and archival photographs, help provide information and clues. When a secret tomb is uncovered, readers, along with Will, put together clues to discover: Whose tomb is this? Why was it hidden? And how can a mummy be missing from a sealed tomb?

This illuminating book invites readers to participate in the process of archaeology as it provides a rare glimpse into the true stories that exist behind the objects in museums.

5 out of 5 stars A creative and challenging exercise for young archeologists.......2003-05-23

In 1924, two years after the famous discovery of King Tut's tomb with its amazing treasures, Dr. George Reisner, a world-famous Egyptologist, is exploring an archaeological site known as Giza 7000X. Joining the dig is young Will Hunt. The conceit here is that while Will and his family are fictitious, the rest of the information about Giza 7000X is true. Reisner was the director of the Harvard University/Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and everything you see in "The 5,000-Year-Old Puzzle: Solving a Mystery of Ancient Egypt" is based on the actual records of a history-making dig (diaries, object registers, photographs, and drawings) of the his expedition. Author Claudia Logan, a former museum educator and teacher, made this book with the cooperation of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

We follow Will's adventures through his journal entries and postcards back home to his friend Sam, another member of the King Tut Club. Artist Melissa Sweet's illustrations, created in acrylic and watercolor, consist of luminous paintings of the pyramids and inventive collages of authentic documents and artifacts. Throughout the book there are sidebars providing information on ancient Egypt regarding the layout of the Great Royal Cemetery at Giza, cartouches, and hieroglyphs, as well as explaining the tools and tricks of the archeological trade. From pouring over "The 5,000-Year-Old Puzzle" young readers will come to appreciate the process by which archeologists unearth the past. Logan and Sweet also provide a sense of the time involved; Will saves a postcard telling about all the digging he has to do and there is a point where everyone sits around and waits for four months Dr. Reisner to return so they finally open the alabaster sarcophagus that has been found.

Even more impressive is the revelation that the puzzle of this title is one still waiting to be solved. Consequently, after suffering with Will through the tedious and painstaking tasks that are involved in discovering and opening an Egyptian tomb, young readers get to exercise their minds as well to come up with an explanation that fits the eight clues revealed through the book (do not worry; they are listed at the end to help). Dr. Reisner and a modern archeologist offer their own explanations, but the key thing here is that no one knows for sure. Whether teachers find a way of using this book for a class discussion or assign a bright student to do a report on it for class, "The 5,000-Year-Old Puzzle" is a great opportunity for challenging young minds to make their own judgments about each clue and come up with their own conclusions about "what really happened." The rests of us can hazard our own guesses as well.

Author, Claudia Logan, and illustrator, Melissa Sweet, have joined forces to create a fascinating and inspiring book filled with history, drama, archeaology, fun facts, trivia, anecdotes, and much, much more. Book Description

A companion volume to a major PBS series premiering in January 1993, this anthology provides a comprehensive overview of the major regions and current issues in Latin America. Each of the volume's thirteen chapters corresponds with a segment of the series and contains a wealth of primary and secondary source material, including speeches, letters, government documents, newspaper and magazine articles, and essays. Each chapter has a specific thematic and geographical focus: the chapter on women, for example, features readings on Chile, providing background on the recent political and economic upheaval that has had an especially dramatic influence on women's lives, while the chapter on religion examines the link between the renewed spiritual revival and theological debate in Brazil and Nicaragua and the marked renewal of social activism in those countries. Offering a general introduction, extensive notes, and a final integrating chapter, this anthology is an essential resource for anyone interested in Latin American history.

      Customer Reviews:

Americas is an excellent teaching tool when the goal is to make Latin America understandable to students who have been subjected to Anglo-Saxon centrism most of their student lives. This anthology of primary works helps the students to see Latin America as a multi-dimensional place with history and complexity. The book is very readable and I would recommend it for undergraduate students who do not have much previous knowledge of Latin America.

      Book Description

Here, for everyone intrigued by the ancient land of the pyramids, is a comprehensive record of civilization along the Nile and an in-depth account of Egyptian archaeology from its beginnings. With the decipherment of hieroglyphics in the early nineteenth century, many of the secrets of the pharaohs and their culture were revealed for the first time to the modern world. Adventurers and fortune hunters as well as scholars flocked to Egypt, thus initiating the plunder of priceless relics that had lain virtually untouched for thousands of years. The destruction of much that would have yielded valuable clues about ancient Egypt alerted concerned individuals, and gradually the new field of Egyptology was born. Christine Hobson takes the reader on a tour of the pharaohs' world, surveying the work of the pioneer archaeologists, from Flinders Petrie at Amarna and Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings to Geoffrey Martin at Saqqara, where his remarkable new excavations have revealed the tomb of Tutankhamun's treasurer, Maya. Specially designed features give at-a-glance information on every aspect of the Egyptian achievement, from temples, tombs, and pyramids to mummies and hieroglyphs. In addition, the author examines the mysteries of Egyptian religion, explains clearly and entertainingly the complexities of Egyptian kingship, and brings to life the daily routine of the common worker. The main part of this invaluable book is backed up by a gazetteer of sites to visit, as well as a king-list and a comparative chronology of ancient civilizations. A work of reference and a sourcebook of ideas and information, this is above all a book to enjoy for its highly readable text and marvelous illustrations.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Ms. Hobson.......2001-03-07

I always believed ancient Egyptian culture is the zenith point of the human kind on its age, their culture was far beyond complex than we believed, and gave birth to greek culture and roman empire's culture and nourished comtemporary cultures.

This book is an essential for an ancient egypt culture beginner and more, even it's an intermediate book for egypt it's very good on making you grasp egyptian heritage chronologically, informative and clear, easy reading. Very good covering of ancient egyptian culture.

I definetely recommend this book if you are a starter. It has plenty of pictures, diagrams which are adequate and correctly chosen for understanding egypt. It even has a hieroglyph reading section. But this book is scholarly minded and organized carefully. Not for magic or egyptian extraterrestrial mambo-jambo seekers nor serious researchers of egypian cryptology and mystery. Oh! Should I say thank you Ms. Hobson.

5 out of 5 stars Completely covers all aspects of Ancient Egyptian culture.......1999-10-10

Christine Hobson's book is very good. I used it as a textbook for class, but found that the subjects in the book read more like a novel. There is humor, and concentrations on art, daily life, writings, individual archaeologists, etc. It is very interesting, and covers so many subjects!

      Book Description

From ink to sailing ships, a biography of the essential tree.

The story of oak is at the root of everything we know. The oak tree is everywhere in the temperate zones of the world; knowing how to use it has made an astonishing difference to human history. Acorn-eating has sustained humans and animals; oak has been central to religious rites, heating, homemaking, and travel by land and sea; the ink from oak galls advanced the written word; oak casks have made possible food and drink storage and transport; oak ships have fought the dramatic naval battles that determined political and economic history. William Bryant Logan combines science, philosophy, spirituality, and history with a quirky curiosity about why the natural world works the way it does. In lively literary prose, he narrates the biography of the tree that since time immemorial has been a symbol of loyalty and strength, generosity and renewal. The oak has been both a patient teacher and an inexhaustible subject. Recent studies reveal remarkable facts about its communitarian nature—proving that the oak can yet instruct us. 30 illustrations.

A sweeping traversal of the oak's progress through history side by side with humankind, Logan's book is a far more satisfying essay in ethnobotany than many books aimed at a general audience. His deep knowledge of botany, forest history, and civilization informs every page. His prose is fluid and nuanced, and he interweaves his themes in wholly satisfying fashion.

This book is most like the "New Yorker" at it's best. Which was when a writer looks at some prosaic part of life and opens his eye wide; then writes about it clearly, with the full power and the real art of a bright and deep understanding of the utter complex beauty of the seemingly simple. This is a book that I would have liked to have written myself! It is a wonderful tale about the place of oaks throughout civilization. I found the linking of so many European family names to oaks and other trees very fascinating. The descriptions of the wooden structures, coppicing, early inks, acorns as food, oaks as foundation for many early technologies, and many other details brought a richness to the history of our ancestors and the beginnings of civilization. I live in an oak-hickory region of the eastern U.S., and this book has given me a greater appreciation of our national treasure.

3 out of 5 stars Oaks Compose the Frame of Civilization........2005-11-19

No tree has been more useful to human beings than the oak. In most of the temperate world, oak is the primary, the 'titular tree of the forest.' What is most impressive about the oaks is that you can go from Massachusetts to Mexico City and find them readily available. When all the other trees were cut down to make room for farm fields, some of the oaks were left to make the boundaries.

The PTA uses the oak leaf and acorn as their symbol of strength and ability to endure. There are many different types of oak, like the California white oak, the Valley Oak, the Live Oak in the South; the Angel Oak in North Carolina is a version of the live oak with hollow trunks making it the easiest wood to split and shape. Memory, reason, and skill wove a world of oak. The people understood, valued, and worshipped the tree that was 'their most intimate compannion' and source of much of thier livelihood.

An illustration shows the different acorns, from the Northern Red Oak, Black Jack Oak, Sawtooth Oak, Scarlet & White Oaks, and the Holm Oak. The first oak was discovered in Thailand; sine then, they have spread to Europe, Asia, North America, and Mexico. He gives an analogy to the Eiffel Tower and an oak as being their internal structures. Eiffel used a skeleton of iron with an empty space to create a form similar to the sixty-five-million-year history of the oaks. The Eiffel Tower is one large skeltal iron cone. The mature oak is composed of hundreds and hundreds of cones from the roots, trunk, to the branches. They are similar in strength and strength, and yet dissimilar as to the reason for their being on this earth.

William Bryant Logan has previously written DIRT: THE ECSTATIC SKIN OF THE EARTH. "A great tree infuses empty space with memory and turns it into a place." On a summer day, it is up to ten degrees cooler in the shade of a great oak. They were removed from the Whittle Compound which the U.S. Govt. now calls their own because of the roots, I was told, and after a big hullaboloo from some of the citizens, replaced with the dogwood. This town does not like trees or birds, and more and more asphalt pavement is replacing the cooling branches of trees which create oxygen. Thanks to my years of volunteer work for the PTA, I have grown to appreciate the tall, strong Oak tree for all it means to such a magnificent organization.

i found this book well written, easy to read and full of interesting aspects. i must admit that the section on using oak to build with that got into the details of cuts and joints was a bit hard to follow but all in all i now understand and appreciate the value and importance of the oak to civilization. so i encourage and recommend this very enjoyable book.

        Book Description

Phoenix is known as the “Valley of the Sun,” while Tucson is referred to as “The Old Pueblo.” These nicknames epitomize the difference in the public’s perception of each city. Phoenix continues to sprawl as one of America’s largest and fastest-growing cities. Tucson has witnessed a slower rate of growth, and has only one quarter of Phoenix’s population. This was not always the case. Prior to 1920, Tucson had a larger population. How did two cities, with such close physical proximity and similar natural environments develop so differently?
Desert Cities examines the environmental circumstances that led to the starkly divergent growth of these two cities. Michael Logan traces this significant imbalance to two main factors: water resources and cultural differences. Both cities began as agricultural communities. Phoenix had the advantage of a larger water supply, the Salt River, which has four and one half times the volume of Tucson’s Santa Cruz River. Because Phoenix had a larger river, it received federal assistance in the early twentieth century for the Salt River project, which provided water storage facilities. Tucson received no federal aid. Moreover, a significant cultural difference existed. Tucson, though it became a U.S. possession in 1853, always had a sizable Hispanic population. Phoenix was settled in the 1870s by Anglo pioneers who brought their visions of landscape development and commerce with them.
By examining the factors of watershed, culture, ethnicity, terrain, political favoritism, economic development, and history, Desert Cities offers a comprehensive evaluation that illuminates the causes of growth disparity in two major southwestern cities and provides a model for the study of bi-city resource competition.

Jedediah Smith is one of the best known of the famous mountain men and that means he's hardly known to most Americans. His life has the adventure of a wild west tale and it's true. This is one of the best works on Smith and if you want a good read and to improve your understanding of the contribution of the mountain men to the development of the American West, you must read this.
