    Book Description

This is not another one–size fits all program with strict rules and baffling instructions. One of the leading voices for holistic living, Mariel Hemingway's Healthy Living from the Inside Out is an accessible, down–to–earth guide that shows us what our bodies and minds truly need and how to make the best decisions for our daily lives. Dividing the program into four foundational areas, we can isolate the issues we all face and start making the necessary changes.

Food: What we eat and drink affects every part of our lives, from our energy level to our body shape. First by distinguishing what foods make us feel and act our best, we can then learn how to integrate a flavorful yet super nutritious diet into of our regular life.

Exercise: Exercise not just to stay in shape but to stay connected to ourselves. By putting the emphasis on quality not quantity, we learn to nurture ourselves, stay grounded, and transform our mental, emotional, and physical state a little bit each day.

Home: Too often where we live echoes the clutter and chaos of the outside world. Learn how to make our homes a place where we can rest, recharge, and refocus, a haven for the balanced life we (and our families) seek.

Silence: In our super noisy world, bringing quiet reflection into our lives slows down the rush, helps us learn the empowering skill of observation, and ultimately can guide us into healthier habits and behaviors.

    Book Description

Bikram, the "hot yoga" program, has been heating up the yoga world lately, and its founder probably has something to do with it: The outspoken, dramatic, and always controversial Bikram Choudhury has garnered a lot of attention with his version of hatha yoga that some yogis think unorthodox: In his classes, students are stuck in a room heated to at least 105 degrees doing a structured program of 26 asanas with a sergeant–like instructor––and they love it. Bikram Yoga will emulate that same energy.

With his take–no–prisoners philosophy, Bikram describes how the program can reap great medical, physical, and spiritual benefits––the poses work out every part of the body, all of which can help alleviate many common ailments, from asthma to back pain. (Photographs will accompany each pose.) In addition, the book offers the best ways to incorporate eastern philosophy into a western lifestyle and tips on how yoga can cultivate "a union between body and spirit." Simply put, you don't have to meditate passively to reap the benefits of yoga.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide for At Home Practice.......2007-09-15

I have attended Bikram Yoga classes, but the studio is far from my house. This book allows me to practice at home, using the book as a guide. The author provides a description for each pose and what areas of the body each pose may benefit the most. Although the sequence of poses is meant to be practiced in order, if you have a specific problem, you can look up which pose(s) may help. Bikram Chourdhury also provides some information and explanations related to yoga. This book contains some yoga theory but the book's primary use is for applied practice.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2007-09-14

Choudhury's book on the practice of Bikram yoga is life-altering. I currently practice Bikram yoga, which is why I decided to pick up this book. I am so glad I did because it enhanced my practice and my thinking about myself, and life. I recommend this book highly. It's an easy read, fun and most of all, incredibly informative.

4 out of 5 stars No surprises, more info on Bikram philosophy.......2007-08-30

This product is designed to enhance your Bikram yoga practice. If you are not a practicing yogi, then much of the book will be mysterious theory only. This book has helped me understand what yoga practice is supposed to do for my body. My postures are deeper and more in balance. Essential reading for the serious Bikram yogi.

1 out of 5 stars This book sucks.......2007-08-16

Make sure to read Scott Meredith's review--he is right on! I won't repeat his excellent and insightful comments. However, I ended up with a completely different conclusion from his.

Bikram's book is by far the worst yoga book I ever bought. He comes across as arrogant, condescending and annoyingly opinionated. As Meredith points out, Bikram's discussion of yoga is biased (as if he came up with the whole concept of yoga!), and the descriptions of asanas (i.e., poses) is so simple and crude that I wouldn't be surprised if most people without prior yoga experience ended up injuring themselves following his instructions.

The biggest disappointment for me was to learn about the size of Bikram's ego. He comes across so biggeted, conceited and pompous that I stopped reading the book half way in. I kept hoping that his ego would get out of the way, but nope, that didn't happen... This is the first yoga book I ended up throwing out.

Want something way better to read? Check these out for asanas and general backgroud on practice:
    1. Iyengar's "Yoga" and "Light on yoga", as well as his daughter Geeta's "Yoga: A gem for women." These are classics and for a good reason: they are clear, detailed, unbiased, and geared towards helping readers appreciate the subtleties of each asana.
    2. Eric Schiffman's "Yoga: The spirit and practice of moving into stillness." You probably won't get any better, detailed instructions and descriptions. Tons of pictures too!
    3. Miriam Austin's "Cool yoga tricks." I think the goofy title of this book underplays the quality of its content. This book is awesome when it comes to using props and adjusting asanas to fit your body.
    4. Silva, Mira and Shyam Mehta's "Yoga the Iyengar way."
    5. Gary Kraftsow's "Yoga for wellness." THE book on Viniyoga.
    6. David Swenson's "Ashtanga yoga: The practice manual." This is perhaps the best one I found on Ashtanga. I really like the sequencing of poses and his inclusion of drishties (where to look at when you're in a pose).

    For yoga philosohy, try these:
    1. Georg Feuerstein's "The yoga tradition"--there's just nothing better than this... This guy definitely knows his stuff. The book is encyclopedic.
    2. Peter Connolly's "A student's guide to the history and philosophy of yoga."
    3. Desikachar's "The heart of yoga."
    4. Eliade's "Yoga: Immortality and freedom."
    5. Carrera's "Inside the yoga sutras."

I ended buying Bikram's book not only to round up my library, but also to learn more about his style. I'm not too crazy about, as Meredith points out, the "one size fits all" approach that characterizes Bikram's yoga (in addition to the heated rooms), but hey, that's his shtik. What I really did not appreciate at all was his constant self-aggrandizing throughout the book. I found it way too distracting and unbecoming a yoga teacher.

1 out of 5 stars Very few pictures, how do you learn???.......2007-08-07

I was very disappointed with this book and would give it 0 stars if I could. On the advice of my doctor I bought it online to learn some stretching exercises for some pain I'm experiencing. Over 300 pages and there are very few pictures. Maybe I bought the wrong book, but how is one to learn if there are no pictures demonstrating how to make the positions?

    Book Description

Heralded by New York magazine as one of the city's most popular diets, macrobiotics has become the latest trend in dieting, thanks to high-profile supporters like Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Speaking to the generation of young women looking to extend their healthy lifestyles beyond yoga and Pilates, macrobiotic chef and instructor Jessica Porter offers fresh, contemporary, and accessible insight into one of the world's oldest, yet most popular, diets. She explains that by eating good quality whole foods, any woman can experience physical, sensory, emotional, and intellectual freedom.

The effects of eating a macrobiotic diet can extend beyond basic health to weight loss, beauty, better sex, and peace of mind. Cooking tips and recipes are combined with Jessica's no-nonsense philosophy and witty anecdotes to create a lifestyle book that will inspire women to hit the kitchen with an understanding of how to strengthen their minds and bodies through food.

The book gives a great overview of Macrobiotics. The author is humorous and doesn't take herself too seriously. An easy read through or reference text.

5 out of 5 stars Making macrobiotics sound less crazy.......2007-06-24

Jessica Porter's light hearted approach to macrobiotics sets this book apart. She doesn't take herself too seriously and admits how nuts it all sounds to someone who has been eating a typical American diet their whole life. It makes the macro philosophy accessible to the most cyncial of us!

5 out of 5 stars The Hip chicks got it going on when it comes to macrobiotic cooking.......2007-04-17

A fun and easy read full of useful information. Couldn't wait to get started. Waiting for her next book. The author has a great sense of humor and explains the theory behind macrobiotics in a clear and concise way. My husband and I love the fish wraps with asian slaw so much we have them at least once a week.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-04-07

Simply one of the best books I've read on macrobiotics! It gives you a good introductory course on how to become macro and how to maintain the philosophy/diet. Jessica's anecdotes are just one of the great reasons to pick this up. Even if you aren't interested in macrobiotics as a lifestyle, there is some great info in here, with some great recipes! I loved her tempura recipe, and I'm going to be trying some more this weekend. This is just great advice for anyone looking to cleanse their bodies and minds or just to eat and feel better. A+

    5 out of 5 stars Easy reading.......2007-04-06

This is a wonderful book for anyone considering Macrobiotics. The book is written with wit and humor and is very easy to understand for someone unfamiliar with Macrobiotics. Even if you do not choose to do Macrobiotics you will still find this book enjoyable. I have recommended it to friends, relatives and the occasional stranger.
There are simple suggestions in the book which will give you a small insight into the possibilities of macrobiotics that do not require a complete lifestyle change or even a purchase -- a way to basically 'test drive' macrobiotics. I was amazed at what a few changes in diet can do.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed the way I learn and teach.......2007-04-04

I learned mind mapping using this book in 2002 and have been making them for learning, and for making decisions, ever since. Now I'm using them for teaching. There's just nothing like mind maps.

One thing I'd like to emphasize: if you think you can't make maps like the ones in the book because you "can't draw", you're in for a real surprise. The very act of drawing your map will draw out your creativity -- it's quite an amazing phenomenon! Your first maps will be timid -- expect that and keep on making them. Save those first maps to "map" your progress.

But if you feel more comfortable working at the computer, since the book came out a whole slew of mind mapping software has emerged and some good ones are free.

    5 out of 5 stars I've found it useful.......2007-03-04

I don't remember how long ago I learned about mind maps, but it's been a while. And I have found them to be useful for organizing thoughts, taking notes on reading, and especially for lectures and even sermons in church.

This book is lavish with illustrations that quite honestly, would be hard for me to sit down and try to do to that quality. But I have found the color-friendly and picture-friendly technique of mind mapping to be useful for introducing the element of play into note taking -- and I've found that it can make an otherwise dull lecture a bit more interesting.

I think that sometimes you'll have to modify the techniques to fit your own personality and learning style. But over all, these techniques will help in a lot of learning and organizing situations.

4 out of 5 stars Great tool, but at times a bit elementary.......2007-01-10

If you happen to use dry erase walls for your meetings, or other types of planning, or find yourself to be a bit of a doodler rather than a 'conventional' note-taker, you'll really find this book helpful. Designed, it seems, primarily for note taking in grade school, it translates very well into other sorts of more 'adult' model-building and planning. I've taken some great tid-bits from it, and used it, almost immediately, with some adroitness and success for a series of meetings. It's a great way to systematize and visualize ideas and opinions without losing track of the conversation through too much attention payed to e-v-e-r-y l-i-t-t-l-e w-o-r-d.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but quite long and frankly a little repetitious.......2006-11-22

I'll recommend this book to people who already has some experience with mind mapping, but wants to get inspiration for new techniques.

I think it's best as a reference book, that you can browse for inspiration, for new mindmap-approaches to problemsolving. You learn about taking YES/NO decision with dyadic mindmapping. You learn to group mindmap, and lots of other stuff.

I wouldn't recommend it for mindmap-rookies. It's not a very pleasant book to read cover-to-cover. There's quite a lot of redundant information, and you spend a lot of time thinking, "haven't I read this before?" To get an introduction to mindmapping you should buy "How to mindmap", by Tony Buzan, instead.

Still worthwhile if you want some inspiration.

'Mind is the Master-Power that molds and makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and shaping what he wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills:-
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking glass.'
    -From the book

This book was my introduction to 'Change your thoughts, change yourlife'. A friend gave me this book several years ago and it dramatically changed the way I began to think. It just made sense, it clicked with me. I was also very surprised to find out that all those years I was thinking that my thoughts were private, no one but me could know them. Then, I read this and realized that our thoughts do show in many ways: appearance, health, our circumstances, etc.

I have read many books on this subject and this is one that will ALWAYS remain in my collection. I still pull it off the shelf and read it occassionally. It's overflowing with valuable wisdom on how your thoughts create your world.

This volume has 5 books in one. It's a small but somewhat chunky book with 384 pages.

5 out of 5 stars "Oh Be Wise", This helps!.......2007-04-10

Great book. His writings are inspiring. You will also note some interesting biographical info in the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Get All Three Volumes.......2007-03-16

This is the volume to start with, but I would recommend all three volumes in "The Wisdom of James Allen" series. These books are valuable to read in marathon sessions, yet they can be practically consumed in short sittings. A meal of just a few pages will give you sufficient spiritual energy for the day. I recommend reading and re-reading because the wisdom is timeless and the principles can be applied daily. This is important reading for clergy, counselors and anyone who wants to start the quest of being a guide by first learning to guide themselves.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Wisdom.......2007-01-10

As a Man Thinketh is a must read and has been for most of the 20th and now the 21st century. To get this companion piece with other great writings by James Allen is amazing. I would suggest it for anyone who is interested in finding the tools necessary to command their own lives.

    5 out of 5 stars Book review.......2007-01-04

A very enjoyable read. The simplicity of his ideas is refreshing. I do believe it really can be this simple. This small pocket size book is easy to fit into a bag/purse, or pocket and take with you wherever you go. I find spending a few minutes here and there reading it works well. Pleasant and easy to follow. Seems like a very sincere person.

We all know absolute beauty when we see it--skin that glows with health and an outer bearing that projects inner tranquillity. Yet, despite our every effort and expense, few of us know how to achieve it. In Absolute Beauty, Pratima Raichur, a chemist and internationally recognized expert on Ayurvedic skin care, explains how the external skin tissue is the physical reflection of everything that happens within the body: the way we eat and breathe, as well as the thoughts and emotions that fill our mind and color our spirit. Here, in the first beauty and skin care guide to reveal the secret to lasting radiance through the principles of Ayurveda, Pratima Raichur offers readers:

1 out of 5 stars If you have sensitive skin, don't try the skin care!.......2007-09-27

I received this book in the mail and went straight to reading the skin care section. I already know I am Pitta (sensitive skin) so I read the skin care tips for Pitta. It listed all the ingredients you should use for that type. I went out to a natural foods store and bought everything. Well $70+ later, I did exactly what she said and had horrible results! My skin broke out in a rash! My skin turned red, burned, and developed red bumps everwhere. This wasn't after multiple uses - this was after 1 use after 5 minutes. I should have known this would happen as she says you should use orange peel, rosewater, rose oil and sandalwood oil - all of which aren't good for sensitive skin but for some reason I believed her. I figured with the great reviews and her owning a spa, her advice can't be wrong. Well it is. Her skin care strategy for sensitive skin is not appropriate - please be advised.

5 out of 5 stars Profound and excellent presentation of Ayurveda.......2007-06-22

5 out of 5 stars If you are into complementary medicine you'll love this book.......2007-01-08

I bought this book when it first came out and I return to it time and again. I've tried the recipes and I've used her product line. You really can tell the difference in your skin when following her regimen. I didn't find it expensive to make the products nor hard to find the ingredients. Any Whole Foods Market carries most of what you need, the bottles, the oils etc. and I'm sure smaller health food stores can order for you. From my perspective, her product line is one of the purest on the market. A total list of her ingredients are on her website. This book goes beyond the surface of skin care into the whole being.

2 out of 5 stars I read parts to my husband for a laugh.......2006-12-27

I bought this book because I do believe that being healthy and physically and mentally in balance will make one more beautiful. I do believe that healthy food and and a diet tailored for your genetics, chemistry, and to correct for imbalances is beneficial as is relaxation techniques. But this book is not at all helpful with what it is supposed to do, which is help you tailor your diet and other regime to your unique needs. It categorizes and recommends things based on your answers to a rather ridiculous quiz that determines your elements and esoteric etcetera. I am embarassed for people thinking there is anything to it; it is to the point of being silly at times. I read parts to my husband for a laugh...

    Book Description

"Everything was alive, pulsing with light and color."
    --Susan Sarback

This is more than a how-to-paint book. It's a how-to-see book ... specifically, how to tune in to nature's glorious subtleties of light and color.

Forget complex theories. "Full-Color Seeing" is based on direct observation. It's about overcoming preconceptions and perceiving true color based on the colors that surround it, the way light hits it, time of day, season, weather conditions, and too many other factors for a mere formula to incorporate. You'll learn to see your subject--any subject--just as life truly presents it to you. This is the secret to capturing the living, breathing sense of atmosphere so celebrated in the works of the Impressionist painters.

A revision of Susan Sarbacks' illuminating Capturing Radiant Color in Oils, this book offers twelve more years of fresh insights, new paintings and expanded coverage on soft pastels. The concepts explored here have been handed down through generations of artists: Sarback was taught "Full-Color Seeing" by master painter Henry Hensche, who learned it from Charles Hawthorne, a contemporary of Claude Monet. This step-by-step approach will add greater vitality to your artwork and forever change the way you see.

5 out of 5 stars Capturing Radiant Light & Color in Oils and Soft Pastels.......2007-04-10

This book is excellent and very helpful. There are many tips and stages presented in a carefully thought out way. I have Susan Sarback's earlier book and this is a stellar update! She shares much of her immensely improved talent and knowledge. Although I am a beginner, I believe this to be helpful to artists of all experience. I highly recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars A serious book.......2007-03-05

In my opinion this book must be compared with "Painting the impressionist landscape", from Lois Griffel; the focus of both books is the same: explaining a simple step-by-step method to paint with full-spectrum color.

    In Sarback's:
-The "block studies" (painting colored wood blocks) are not so well explained. Griffel gives a lot more insight in the selection of colors, and the cloudy day example is completely missing in Sarback's.
-There are more step-by-step "real landscape" demonstrations, but they are not so well explained as in Griffel's. Just 4 pictures of preliminary states of the painting. Nevertheless the final pictures of these demonstrations are much better in Sarback's.
-There is a comparison of different color approaches to painting that is interesting: expressionist, abstract, local, etc.
-She does not explain how to select colors (which warm? which cool?) or how to compare their values. There is nothing similar to Griffel's idea of a chart for comparing values.
-She gives tips about brushstrokes or using different types of edges. These subjects are not included in Griffel's.
-Portrait and figure paintings are not covered at all. Griffel's at least shows some beautiful paintings of this kind.
-The pages are almost full of text and beautiful paintings. There are no quasi-empty pages.
-The soft pastels coverage is minimal, but oils coverage is also lacking. The book talks about general principles: do not expect low-level (paint layering, I mean) advice.

A "must have" book? I am not sure, but I think that if you follow Sarback's tips, you will paint beautiful "masterpieces". If you are a beginner consider buying Sarback's DVD "The difference a day makes". The DVD is too short (30 min or so) and a bit dissapointing, but if you want to observe the way she paints wet-on-wet, may be it is cheaper than a trip to California to attend Sarback's workshops.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-02-27

Detailed teachings from a master painter -- can it get better? This is the absolutely best how-to book on painting in the Hensche/Hawthorne tradition that is out there right now. It is a bit surprising that it is called a revised edition, as, IMHO, it is a new and even better book. The method is explained clearly and logically, easy to follow. Many step-by-step demonstrations with clear explanations teach how one can see and paint one's own still-life or landscape.

Although, in honesty, a book can't beat studying with a master in person, I'm convinced that Sarback's new book is so clearly written that a beginner in this method can learn as much of it as is possible. For those who already paint with the light-and-colour method, it is invaluable, and can take you steps and leaps further on seeing and painting light.

My impression is that master painter Sarback does gives it all, and does not "keep secrets". The very best teachers encourage students to become even better than they are, and does not hold back on advice and teaching. This book is a cornucopia of principles, method, and practical advice. I will wear it out, as I progress as a painter of light-and-colour.

Today, within the United States, a "doctor of naturopathy" (N.D.) or "doctor of naturopathic medicine" (N.M.D.) credential is available from four full-time schools of naturopathy and at least eight nonaccredited correspondence schools, of which seven maintain Web sites [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]. (One correspondence school, the Progressive Universal Life Church, offers a "Ph.D. in Naturopathy" for $250 plus "life experience with no coursework.)

It seems that everyone in the world has an opinion on how to be healthy and how to eat right. I've read a lot of junk, and I'm happy to say that Valerie Saxion is right on the money. Why? Because I feel great, all the time. Sorry, very hokey, but very true. Her advice is really good, and shows meaningful ways on suppressing your appetite, eating healthier and finding the right supplements. She even included a directory of practicing naturopatic doctors in the United States. I'm thankful for this book, which uses Biblical examples on how the human body should work, and how to cleanse one's self of parasites, and other nasties. If you're serious about health, this book is a great start.

5 out of 5 stars Radiant Tarot Deck Lives up to its name!!!.......2007-02-11

This deck is beautiful! I love the color! It stays true to the original Rider-Waite Deck and is VERY eye appealing. It comes with a small set of instructions inside the deck (more of a pamphlet than a booklet and definitely not a book). The pamphlet would be somewhat helpful to someone starting off, but I would suggest getting a "how to" tarot book to companion for beginers. There is good detail for those that read intuitively, but for those that wish to stretch beyond the traditional... you may want to go for another set of cards. This deck is great for both those just starting out or for those that have been practicing for years. This is definitely added among one of my favorite tarot decks.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre At Best.......2007-02-06

I was expecting the "perfected" version of the Rider-Waite tarot deck, and in fact I was hoping that the second rate artwork of the original cards had somehow been improved and rendered less sophomoric. Such wishful thinking!

The colors are stronger on this deck, and it has better contrast as well, but the images themselves are every bit as clunky, as grade-schoolishly drawn, and as uninspired as the original deck. What a let down.

The obviously over enthusiastic reviews this deck has received are wildly inaccurate. I suspect that those same reviewers would also give five stars to a fastfood Happy Meal and call it an upscale dining experience.

Regardless, this is a mediocre deck of tarot cards, offering zero improvement over the original, artistically challenged, Rider-Waite deck (which is itself rather mediocre - and especially so in resect to the Crowly Thoth deck).

If you want a really pretty deck, that also has adequate symbolism, pick-up a B.O.T.A. deck and color it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The PERFECT RWS Deck!!.......2007-01-30

FAR superior to the Universal Waite or the "regular" RWS deck. Colors are BEAUTIFUL, VIBRANT and ENGAGING. If you're going to buy a traditional deck, THIS IS IT, look no further!!

5 out of 5 stars Love this version!!.......2006-10-16

I got the Rider Waite and the Universal version. that was my fav cause it looked better to the eyes. I was not sure if I should buy the Radiant version cause I got 2 RW decks why would i need another? But I said to myself I am going to buy it, to see what it looks like, cause I love to see new versions of the RW deck. I must say the Radiant RW is amazing! The colors are bold and clear its refreashing. I am happy I bought it, If you are starting on Tarot Buy The Radiant or Universal versions they are the best.

4 out of 5 stars priestess' face too hard.......2006-10-12

i love the cards, the color, even the "new book" smell--but i was terribly disappointed with the changes they made to the high priestess' face. she looks nothing like the original, mystical, youthful priestess. she looks angry, tired, lined, hard, and old, and very unhappy. that threw me off and made me doubt the entire deck--i wondered if i was imagining negative energy or what. i use the priestess as my significator whenever i do a reading for myself, and her face made me not want to even touch the cards. i also have the original priestess tattooed on my arm, so i could be a little biased.
