Book Description

Multiple Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge takes readers on a fifty-million-year trip to a future where humanity's fate will be decided in a dangerous game of high-tech survival. In this taut thriller, a Hugo finalist for Best Novel, nobody knows why there are only three hundred humans left alive on the Earth fifty million years from now. Opinion is fiercely divided on whether to settle in and plant the seed of mankind anew, or to continue using high-energy stasis fields, or "bobbles," in venturing into the future. When somebody is murdered, it's obvious someone has a secret he or she is willing to kill to preserve. The murder intensifies the rift between the two factions, threatening the survival of the human race. It's up to 21st century detective Wil Brierson, the only cop left in the world, to find the culprit, a diabolical fiend whose lust for power could cause the utter extinction of man.Filled with excitement and adventure, Vinge's tense SF puzzler will satisfy readers with its sense of wonder and engaging characters, one of whom is a murderer with a unique modus operandi.

An interesting murder mystery. Using statis bobbles, time can pass at a
different rate for those outside. Therefore, being kicked out of one
effectively strands you from your fellows, forever. Is this murder?
Millions of years after an event, a police officer must try and work
out why this happened and who did it.

5 out of 5 stars A superb time travel mystery.......2006-12-28

After hearing Vernor Vinge speak recently, it was no surprise to me that Marooned In Realtime is a thoughtful, intelligent novel. Science fiction that spans great periods of time is often forced to throw characterization overboard as the scope overwhelms individuals (e.g. Stapledon's otherwise excellent Last and First Men reads more like a treatise on the future than a novel). Vinge's tale of a small group of time travelers living in the ruins of a post Singularity Earth is epic in scope but at the core is a compelling personal tale of companions lost in the distant past and hope for the future. This book is an underappreciated classic and one of the best science fiction novels I have read in some time.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books in any genre.......2006-09-07

I first read Marooned In Realtime when it was serialised in the American Analog [sic!] magazine. I enjoyed it immensely - the artwork was tantalising, too.

I have now read this book a number of times and it is one I return to from time to time, it has become an old friend. I will read it again sometime. I now have the combined novel - Across Realtime, which included The Peace War and Marooned In Realtime - both novels are excellent and worth ten times any Orson Scott Card novel!

Many ideas and feelings are explored in Marooned in Realtime. The conversations between Will and the various people he interviews about the "murder" are informative, thought provoking and full of wonder. His conversation with Della Lu, the Chinese space traveller and former cop for the Peace Authority, is the most interesting and moving. I well remember Della's phrase, spoke in a quiet voice: "Intelligent life is a very rare development." Her story is so credible, it seems as if Vinge has actually found out about the universe from a private, undisclosed source.

The speculations, mainly from Della Lu, about the Singularity are worth reading. This book, as far as I can tell, presents one of the most interesting and credible scenarios vis-à-vis the Singularity I have yet read. Only David Brin's short story, "Stones of Significance" deals with the post-Singularity are well, or, perhaps, better.

If you like the sense of wonder, thought provoking ideas and a damn good story, then Marooned In Realtime is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Murder Mystery Millions of Years in the Making.......2006-06-04

This is not quite a sequel to THE PEACE WAR but it is related and uses at least one of the same characters, Della Lu, but it is independent and can be read by itself. The technology, however, derives from that book and a knowledge of its story helps a bit.

In THE PEACE WAR, a government was able to impose a worldwide peace by imposing a "bobble" on anything that might be threatening. This can be taken to mean anything that threatens the peace or anything hat threatens the power of the peace authority. A bobble is merely a bubble, using a trick of physics to place everything inside in suspension until the bobble bursts. It is a perfect protection. That which is in a bobble can survive even in the sun itself, as long as the bobble does not burst while in the sun. Those within are protected and ignorant of all outside; those outside have no access to that within. All one can do is wait for the bobble to burst.

With the overthrow of the peace authority, technology kept racing ahead. Some time after the 23rd century, though, something happened. All the inhabitants of earth were gone with no clue as to what happened, although theories abound. Those coming out of suspension as the bobbles burst have no clue and there might not even be enough of them to make humanity's continued existence assured. One couple conceives of a grand scheme to suspend everyone until all of the bobbles are burst and then try to repopulate the world. It barely has a chance of working and those chances plunge when someone manages to murder one of the new power brokers. It is no ordinary murder, it was merely the failure to include the woman in the bobbles. She died of old age, alone in the world, while millennia passed.

One of those who has been rescued is a cop. He is tasked with trying to solve the murder of a case that is literally millions of years old. His only help is a series of journals the victim left behind. The catch is that the murderer does not want to be caught and can easily destroy anyone who interferes. Not everyone believes in the grand rescue scheme. To make matters worse, the cops is wrongly though to have raped the victim the night before the crime.

It's a good murder mystery and the technology is interesting to read about. Unfortunately, mysteries are not my favorite. Somebody who does really like them, though, should enjoy this book, especially if also a science fiction fan.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the FUTURE!.......2006-03-27

A mystery, a tale of survival, the government of New Mexico, the Peacers, bobbles and millions of years in the future. Tinkers, low tech, high tech, ungovs and statists. Wil W. Brierson, a police detective from the 21st Century, had been shanghaied - forced into a bobble against his will. Now he, and the last remains of mankind and culture, were doing all they could to survive.
And one of the most important persons on Earth, the one with the plan to save them all, is murdered. So after millions of years he gets a new job. To solve the crime.
Set in a Earth far in the future, with advanced techonolgy, interesting characters, realistic problems and new animals the book is a great read. Dogthings, social spiders and fishermonkeys remind me of a Dougal Dixon book. And as Vernor Vinge is a fan of Mr. Dixon there is a reason for that.
I don't have the Peace War but I do have the short story The Ungoverned in which Wil stops the NM invasion of Kansas so I did know some of the background of his character and why the New Mexicans dislike him. This book is just great with the first book. In other words, it pretty much stands on its own.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sequel to Forced Mate.......2007-07-04

I loved Forced Mate so wasn't surprised I loved Insufficient Mating Material. The author is witty, tells an intelligent and humorous story that also has an amazing plot running throughout. Many of the characters were remembered, or at least familiar sounding; even so, I made good use of the genealogy chart at the back of the book.

If you've read Forced Mate, you'll recall that the Imperial Family gives new meaning to the term, dysfunctional family. Well, the dysfunction continues, with treason, murder, plots and counterplots aplenty. Briefly, the Tiger Prince's sister, Martia-Djulia, publicly refuses the mate chosen for her. Unrecognizable after his surgery, Djetth is really the man she yearns to have as her mate, but he's honor bound to conceal his identity. Tiger Prince maroons the two on a deserted island until they agree to be mates. Since Djetth believes he's in love with another princess, and Martia-Djulia knows she's in love with the murdered Commander Jason, it takes a while for the two to catch on that they might actually like one another. And then they're attacked.

The romance slowly builds between the two, and the conversations leave you chuckling. The author has people from Earth as characters too, who observe and interpret what they see into Earth lingo which I found hilarious. The plot, the writing, the Tigron Empire, the characters and the romance are well done, well thought out. But it was the romance, the ending that made the book for me. One of the best endings I've read in a long time. A true romance. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars another hot and captivating episode of the rut-rageous Djinns.......2007-06-21

For some, life is a game. In past politics and relationships, Martia-Djulia and Djetthro-Jason have both been pawns. Now a new match begins and the objective is Marriage.

Tarrant-Arragon, god-Emperor of Tigron (see FORCED MATE) has spared Prince Djetthro-Jason from execution for treason on the conditions that J-J accepts a new identity and marry the emperor's sister. Djetth cannot let her know his true identity; so he must not only win a woman for the first time in his life, but to do it, he must fight against memories of her true love ... himself!

Martia-Djulia has often been sacrificed as a pawn for the Empire, but this latest betrayal is too much to accept! At her mating ceremony she learns that it is NOT her true love presented as her mate and her anger unleashes a unique Djinn-power as she refuses the match.

At every opportunity the Emperor has placed them together and at a loss for patience, has stranded them together on an island. Although they believe themselves marooned, Martia and Djetth are being protected by the emperor's warship orbiting the planet. It is a protection soon needed as other forces gather playing a deadly game. Their continued existence not only depends on survival skills Jason learned while on Earth, but on decisions others are making in other parts of the galaxy.

For those of us who have been impatiently waiting, Ms Cherry delivers another hot and captivating episode of the rut-rageous Djinns of the Tiger Empire. If you need a helpful family tree and character list, there is one on author's web site which will help if you haven't read MATING NET and FORCED MATE. You can still enjoy this story as a first read, but you will want to read them for more details.

Martia and Djetth's island interlude has some scenes that those who enjoy reality shows will appreciate. Woven through the story are updates of what is happening through the galaxy. The political intrigue that brought them to this point continues and we learn more of other Djinn whose ambitions endanger their lives. Martia and Djetth develop into likable individuals instead of adversaries as the story unfolds and reader has further insight into their thoughts and feelings.

With intriguing twists and turns, action encounters, entertaining dialog mixed with sexual innuendo and hot romance, this is a book that you won't put down until the end.

5 out of 5 stars Love on a desert island ..........2007-03-19

He used to be Commander Jason of the Saurian White Knights, but Commander Jason is no more. Now, he is Prince Djetthro-Jason of the Tigron Empire, and his destiny is to marry the Crown Prince Tarrant-Aragon's sister, Martia-Djulia. Unfortunately, Princess Martia-Djulia does not agree. She is used to being pushed aside and controlled, her wishes ignored. If she cannot marry the man she believes she loves, she has no wish to marry at all. Especially not a man who looks as beat-up and shopworn as this Prince she's never heard of before. However, Tarrant-Aragon has decreed that the two shall marry -- and what Tarrant-Aragon decrees will take place, no matter what he must do to bring it about.

I have to admit it -- I love reading about the Djinn of the Tigron Empire. This is a great sequel to Forced Mate. It works on several levels; it is both a love story and a mystery and a reminder that biology is destiny. Cherry's prose challenges the reader with carefully planned complexity while delivering romance and humor and suspense. The characters of Martia-Djulia and Djetthro-Jason are multifaceted; they seem like real people, with foibles and failings in addition to their many admirable qualities. I especially felt empathy to Martia-Djulia, a woman who dares not trust again. The male/female sex scenes are mostly tantalizing, though fairly explicit, with alien references that I found extremely funny. I altogether enjoyed this book and give it 5 Angels and a Recommended Read! -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)

3 out of 5 stars the sequel.......2007-03-17

Don't be fooled by the cover of this book..its not a strictly romance/erotica type novel..there's also the sci-fi aspect that makes up the majority of the story..this isn't what I expected as I started reading it either, so I was pleasantly surprised.

From reading the quotes on the back cover, as well as inside the book, I gather that "Insufficient Mating Material" is actually a sequel to Rowena Cherry's novel "Forced Mate." I didn't realize this until I was finished reading the book, and all of a sudden things started to make a lot more sense. From the start of this book, I was slightly confused and had a hard time keeping the characters and their family trees straight in my head...at times I also felt like the author was taking for granted that I would know things that in fact, I didn't know. Occasionally I was a bit overwhelmed by my confusion, and tempted to abandon ship so to speak, and move along to another book. That being said, I now realize that its a sequel, and that explains why the author would assume I knew certain things..

The plot is actually sort of tricky, but I'm going to do my best to simplify here..the story revolves around a young prince named Djetth, who is forcibly marooned on a desert island with Martia-Djulia. The two were supposed to mate, but Martia-Djulia refused Djetth in public during their mating ceremony. In order to force the mating process, Martia-Djulia's brother Tarrant-Arragon, strands them together on this island. Sounds sort of strange I know, but what follows is a journey as the two discover who they really are, and get to know one another in a sincere fashion. There's more to the story..of love and obsession, deceipt and dishonor, lies and manipulation.. I assume all of these things were continuations of events in the first book, but I'm not entirely sure.

It was an entertaining read, aside from my being confused through some it. I'd recommend probably reading the first book before reading "Insufficient Mating Material," to avoid the overwhelming confusion I encountered. If you're just looking for something different, erotic, romantic or intriguing, this is a good one for you..

5 out of 5 stars A Steamy Satisfying Sci-Fi.......2007-02-23

Insufficient Mating Material starts where Forced Mate left off, but IMM focuses on Djetthro-Jason (Djetth) and Martia-Djulia's (Marsh) story. The premise is simple. Marsh fell in love with Djeth when he was disguised a Commander Jason, but now he's Prince Djethro-Jason and his alter ego is permanently dead. He's thinner than usual and--without the distinctive jagged scar across his cheek, his colorful contact lenses, and his long, blond-dyed hair--he's unrecognizable. He's been ordered to marry Marsh and be the fashionista's love slave, but he doesn't mind. He has very hot, very fond memories of the last time they were together. The trouble is, Marsh doesn't want him. She's determined to be faithful to her lover Jason.

When she refuses to mate with Djetth, the couple is marooned on an island to consummate their marriage. As if that weren't enough, someone wants Marsh and Djetth dead. But who? With the Tigron royal family's convoluted political and personal agendas it's hard to guess exactly who is behind the plot and why.

Once again Rowena Cherry weaves a fabulous story from a twisted skein of subplots. Insufficient Mating Material is a steamy, satisfying read. Cherry keeps her readers guessing at the villain's identity and motivation until the very end.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun and fast paced..........2007-08-31

I picked up this book because of the coverart. I thought this story would be about Parris and Torres being stuck alone on a planet, but the story turned out different. Still, it was an enjoyable read. The characters were true to the TV series with some extra depth. Kess really shows strenght in this story. The other species they dealt with were interesting and different than what you usualy see on the TV series. Overall, I recommend this book for Voyager fans.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, a Fun Read.......2004-10-02

"Marooned" was an excellent book: it was fast-paced and had a unique plot. Christie Golden knows the characters well and it shows in the various dialogues and interactions between the crew. There was only one aspect I didn't like about Golden's writing. At the beginning of the book she had Janeway using so many Western American idioms, "like a pair of wolves," that it made the book seem corny.
I would recommend "Marooned" to any Voyager fan, especially if you liked "Basics." Like in "Basics," Captain Janeway and her crew must survive in a harsh enviroment without the use of their technologies.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Read this!.......2003-10-19

I'm a big Voyager fan, and I can honestly say that this is possibly the best Voyager book that I have ever read. It's exciting, nicely written, interesting... you should have this book if you're a Voyager fan or even just a Star Trek fan!

5 out of 5 stars ST-Voyager: Marooned.......2003-02-23

Star Trek-Voyager: Marooned written by Christie Golden is a Kes book primarily with highlights on Tom Paris/B'Elana Torres. Not to forgetten that the characterizations of Nelix and Captain Kathryn Janeway play an integral part also.

The main plot of the book is to get Kes back to U.S.S. Voyager after she's been kidnapped. Kes is portrayed as a strong character in the book but she also has a delicate side that is exploited well in the novel. What I liked about the novel is that there is some fleshing out of the charcaters above making for an interesting read. The plot moves well with the expected twists and turns keeping the reader's interest, also there is a mixture of some tongue in cheek humor with a sprinkle of intrigue making for a well-written novel.

The book has the U.S.S. Voyager in hot pursuit of an alien who has kidnapped Kes and resucue attempts but the mission fails all adding spice to the story, as a shuttle crashs on an unknown planet. Janeway and her away team must find a way off the planet as the environment is hostile... while Chakotay and the Voyager crew confronts an enemy fleet.

This book has action-adventure and good character developement making it one of the better Voyager books. Engaging and fascinating are just two words that can describe this book... read it and enjoy a good adventure tale.

5 out of 5 stars Not the best VGR book but still great!.......2002-08-27

As I said in the title, it's not the best but it's still a great VGR book. It is well worded, has a good mixture of characters, the space pirates are an interesting twist and there are some really funny scenes. The main character in this book is Kes but all of the shows main characters have a moment in the spotlight. Golden produced another wonderful piece of work with this book and I really recommend it.

P.S P/Ters should be forewarned that theirs only one or two P/Tish scenes so do NOT buy this book just because you think they might be a key relationship scene in this book. You would be sorely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-09-21

This is a storybook version of the episode of Fraggle Rock called "Marooned." It is very intelligently written, with far more words than pictures. The illustrations are beautifully done, and the story is touching. The intelligent narration augments rather than detracts from the original TV script. Very young kids would probably be daunted by the lengthy text, but any Fraggle lover aged nine or ten and older (even adults who grew up with the Fraggles) will love this book. The story deals with the idea of our own mortality in a wonderful way, getting just serious enough to get its point across without seeming saccharine or avoiding using the word "death." Five stars!

Book Description

In 1704, Alexander Selkirk was voyaging across the South Pacific when, after arguing with the ship's captain, he was put ashore aloneon an uninhabited island. Equipped with little more than a musket and his wits, Selkirk not only survived in complete solitude for more than four years, but to came to be quite comfortable and happy. After being rescued by a British privateer in 1709, he took a leading role in several dramatic captures of merchant ships. Although he returned to civilization a rich man, he couldn't find a place in society and always longed to return to the paradise of his island. Selkirk's well-documented adventures so inspired Daniel Defoe that they became the basis for his perennial classic, Robinson Crusoe. In an account that is every bit as fascinating as Defoe's novel, Robert Kraske provides vivid descriptions of Selkirk's days on the island and aboard ship, including details of the violent, bloody, and legally sanctioned pirating that went on in the early 18th century. Author's note, glossary, bibliography, index.

Book Description

There's no turning back.

The year is 2085, and a new teen has arrived at Mars Experimental Station One, a colony built to test humans' ability to live self-sufficiently in an alien and hostile environment. Already in existence for ten years, "Marsport" is a functioning city of two thousand people -- with only twenty teenagers. These teens, part of the controversial Asimov Project, were hand selected from the billions on Earth and are always under the watchful eyes of the adults.

The newcomer, Sean, is a fifteen-year-old orphan who acts tough but secretly thinks he can't measure up to the others. His companions are Jenny, also fifteen, an ethereal blond whose frail looks belie her fierce intelligence, and Alex, a fourteen-year-old pilot in training who doesn't always know his boundaries. They each have reasons to doubt themselves...and distrust each other. But one thing is certain: Mars offers them something Earth never could. When the existence of Marsport is suddenly threatened, the group must overcome their fears and join forces, for their survival depends on nothing less.

3 out of 5 stars This was not THE BEST book that I've ever read .......2005-12-28

I'd advise this book to younger readers (around ages 6-8)because it's not that long and it doesn't use extremely complicated words (such as ubiquitous)and it doesn't delve far into the main character's personal life. It is reasonable for people who want to learn about Mars because it is jam-packed with facts. It is in the future, and young kids who like science fiction would pretty much enjoy it because it has mention of robots and spaceships. Forlovers of good literature and avid readers, it doesn't have much to offer because it doesn't describe that many things, only like splashes on a Mars colony's lake and those small things.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book .......2005-12-28

Well... I sort of like it. Brad Strickland didn't describe Sean's, Alex's, or Jenny's faces, only what they were wearing. That I don't like. The good part of Mars: Year One Number One is that Sean passes the obstacles and finally reaches his goal, to fit in with the group. The book is also full of facts about Mars. Those I like. I hope the second book in the series will be better and have more description.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Story.......2007-03-31

This book wastes no time-- it's a great story about a resourceful teenage girl who reconnects with her dad (and connects for the first time with some other members of her newly blended family) during a sailboat outing gone horrifically bad. It's a quick read-- fast paced, sometimes terrifying, and kids love it. So do their parents. I started to read a few pages and was hooked till the end. Best of all, it's a story with a tough, smart young woman as hero. It should be in every middle school library.

4 out of 5 stars The story grabs you.......2007-03-20

This is truly a page turner - I couldn't put the book down until the very end. The pace never slows down and the suspense keeps on building. In addition to being a mighty good "nautical yarn" (in the tradition of "The old man and the sea") it is also a sensitive observation of the thoughts and emotions of a young girl struggling to adjust to a different "family". My only complaint is that this book might scare some younger readers away from sailing - that would be too bad!

4 out of 5 stars "Lost in Life..." is a great read for all ages .......2007-02-08

Whether you are 13 or 30, you'll enjoy this excellent bit of fiction written for the younger set. This fast-paced story of a blended family caught in a hurricane is slightly reminiscent of heftier sea epics, yet told from the point of view of a young girl struggling with issues of adholescence, broken/reconstructed family, and shattered childhood dreams played out on the open sea. It's honest, gripping, and ultimately warm and satisfying. A page-turner that begs for Raver-Lampman to bring out the sequel soon.

5 out of 5 stars From the Back Cover.......2004-11-01

Stormy Hearts. A torrential hurricane stranded Karen Beckett in a tiny motel room with Gunnery Sergeant Sam Paretti, the one man she never wanted to see again! Just months before, Karen had severed all ties with the gorgeous marine, but bittersweet memories of their love refused to vacate her mind. Now her rescuer demanded a hefty price for shelter from the storm.

2 out of 5 stars Hey Marine-you can do better than this woman!.......2002-10-28

...I have read two previous books in this series and liked them. Not this one though. The back cover description makes it sound like Sam wants sex, what he wants is an explanation for the break-up, which he never got. Karen is running away from the death of her first love, a marine Gunnery Sergeant. So how believable is it that she would date, let alone love another one? Because that's what she whines about-'you're going to die, and I'm afraid' just about through the whole book. Sam deserves better. That's why it got 2 stars instead of one, cause I liked the hero-I just wish the author had given him a better book.

    3 out of 5 stars marooned with a marine.......2000-11-15

This book was entertaining but so predictable. The heroine was a weak and indecisive woman. The story centered too much around their waiting out the storm. This book would have been better if the characters developed into a more in depth story line. I felt the story was a simple idea that did not contain enough to fill the pages of a book. The story did not "wow" me over.

2 out of 5 stars Buildup fails, instead it's boring.......2000-11-11

I think the main storyline failure is that chapter after chapter consists of the two characters arguing. This is supposed to function as the buildup of sexual tension, but it doesn't work. It gets really boring really fast.

In general, the plot and characters seemed contrived.
