Book Description
Call Arkady a clone with a conscience. Or call him a traitor. A member of the space-faring Syndicates, Arkady has defected to Israel with a hot commodity: a genetic weapon powerful enough to wipe out humanity. But Israel’s not buying it. They’re selling it–and Arkady–to the highest bidder.
As the auction heats up, the Artificial Life Emancipation Front sends in Major Catherine Li. Drummed out of the Peacekeepers for executing Syndicate prisoners, Li has now literally hooked up with an AI who has lived many lifetimes and shunted through many bodies. But while they have their own conflicting loyalties to contend with, together they’re just one player in a mysterious high-stakes game….

Taking On Too Much.......2007-10-08
There is no question that Chris Moriarty can write. She wields simile like a master swordsman, and her scenes read with the detail of an author who has really thought them through--has visualized them from every angle. Her story devices also required skill. Her first book, "Spin State", was a mystery novel set in a speculative future while this second book, "Spin Control", is a spy/intrigue novel set a few years after that. With all of these demonstrated skills, why do Moriarty's books read like someone post-holing through deep snow?
I think that, perhaps, Moriarty has been a bit too ambitious with her material. I count four main topics, Space Opera, Science Fiction, Cyber Fiction, and Action/Adventure, all crammed together and competing for space on the page. Any quarter of this book, if developed completely, would have been a well-drawn, fascinating story. Taken as a whole, though, each topic is crowded into a confusing jumble of undeveloped characters, confused motivations, and shaky chapter transitions. In my opinion, the storytelling in "Spin Control" does improve over "Spin State", and Moriarty's ideas remain fascinating albeit tedious in their development. Perhaps more improvement will come with a third book.
Mixed Bag.......2007-08-27
There are parts of this book, particularly the last 100 pages, that are hard to put down and will keep you reading through phone calls and well past bedtime.
Unfortunately, there are parts of the book that are also weak...or so fascinating that just by touching upon them rather than exploring them more...I was left unsatisfied and a bit perplexed. I agree with several of the reviewers that the parts of the book about the Syndicates were fascinating and desperately needed to be explored far more.
Also, the plot is almost ludicrously convoluted and the chart the characters draw up to get their own hands around the plot made me think first, Wow, neat idea, and then, Wait a minute...this is what's wrong, when's the last time I read a great book that had to include a chart of various characters and plotlines to keep me focused...? Never, that's when, and that's the fundamental problem.
The characterization is excellent, the setting perfectly spun (albeit depressing), and the writing top notch. Unfortunately, the plot spins a bit too much out of control, is too convoluted and thus ends up losing a lot of its punch...which then caused my enjoyment of the book to drop.
If you like Moriarity's earlier book, SPIN STATE, this is an enjoyable, if not great read. If this is your first look at Moriarity or this type of cyberpunk sci-fi, there are a lot better books out there to whet your appetite on.
A big disappointment.......2007-08-15
After enjoying Spin State so much and seeing many positive reviews by other Amazon readers, I was really looking forward to reading Spin Control. What a disappointment! I knew that it wasn't going to be a sequel per se, but I did expect the same interesting plot, characters and social/technical context that Spin State offered. Instead I found a very confusing plot (I'm still trying to figure out what happened and why, a couple of days after finishing the book) plus a lot of talky lectures about complex systems that left me bored and further confused. I do agree with other reviewers that the characterization is better in Spin Control and the inside-Syndicates perspective provides an interesting counterpoint, but these factors weren't enough to redeem the novel for me.
This is the first Amazon review that I've written, motivated by the need to give a minority report balancing all of the five-star ratings found here. I'm happy that those reviewers loved the book, but personally I wish I had quit reading Chris Moriarty after his excellent Spin State.
Great Book, better then the first!.......2007-08-15
I really enjoyed Moriarty's first novel, "Spin State" and eagerly looked forward to reading the "sequel". Spin State started off slowly, but worked its way forward and provided a good story. It was a bit confusing at times, but provided a very interesting view of a future society. I expected Spin Control to pretty much follow that same format. Well, for once I was pleasantly surprised to actually read a sequel which was better then its predecessor!! Spin Control is a far superior novel. It's better written, more coherent and the characters have LOTS more character. It was a fascinating book and one of the better ones I've read this year. I totally recommend it, but you probably have to read Spin State first, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I believe it's necessary to fully enjoying the sequel.
For those of you who loved the character of Catherine Li in the first book, she only makes cameo appearances in this one. In my opinion, this strengthens the novel as the characters who take her place are far more interesting. This book is almost entirely set on Earth, in Israel/Palesine, actually, which provides another fascinating dynamic. For those of you looking for a good sci-fi story in a land of bad fantasy and Star Wars novels, this is the book for you!
sort of a let down........2007-07-22
The first book, Spin State, was incredible. This sequel
doesn't seem to be written by someone with a lot of time to perfect the story. This novel is extremely claustrophobic, one is literally suffocated by the mechanizations of a very distant Palestine and Jerusalem. Catherine Li disappears in the first quarter of the book, and her A.I. lover (remember this is science FICTION), remains on earth engaged in some kind of power takeover by Israel. This novel is so swamped with the Israeli mossad and middle-east intrigue, that the science fiction and central theme of the story collapse under seemingly irrelevant future political posturing between these two countries. I had originally thought I was reading science fiction and not some bizarre middle-eastern polemic in a non-existent universe. Maybe I am missing something, but this novel just got bogged down in the middle in a political ping-pong game between Israel and Palastine and a clone. I kept waiting for it to break out and get spooky and interesting as she did in her last novel. It does introduce one to swarm theory so it wasn't a complete waste of time.
Book Description
Nancy Snow, a former USIA employee, examines how American propaganda efforts and covert operations are expanding more rapidly today than at any time in U.S. history, as the Bush administration attempts to increase U.S. dominance by curbing dissent and controlling opinion.
Customer Reviews:
A collection of leftist cliches. Thank God I bought this used........2007-08-31
What a piece of work Ms. Snow is. On one one hand, she trumpets Freedom of the Press as part of her "favorite psalm (page 12)," and on the other harkens the deregulation of the media that took place in 2003 (page 15) as some sort of plot to institute mind control. Does it take a mere three pages for liberal doublethink to occur? For Ms. Snow, apparently it does.
Snow attempts to wax eloquently about a post-911 antiwar speech given by Howard Zinn (whom she calls a "rock star" and whom I call "a Marxist who never met a communist dictatorship he didn't like") and then goes on with some drivel about "street-taking protests." All this before she even begins to address propaganda, which is the stated purpose of the book.
As far as I can tell (what with Snow's muddled thinking and admiration for French marxists) China, the former USSR and the United States were all big propaganda blocs prior to our victory over Communism. Now that the USSR is gone (and I'm sure leftists like Snow are still mourning the fall of the Wall) the U.S. and China are the only propagandists on the bloc... and she's not sure about China. Apparently because the mass media actually on occasion repeats the President's statements in a non-critical way and fails to be hypercritical at every turn (which I would argue is no longer the case at the moment) then it must be considered to be the same as a state-run media. the fact that the media is not daily screaming at the top of its lungs that we are involved in an unjust war and we should pull out now, today even, bothers Snow quite a bit. She wants the media to put out HER brand of propaganda!
Disagreeing with the Left, by the way, is interfering with the free speech rights. I get that all the time. Dissent is only good when leftists are the dissenters. She particularly took to task the freedom to call someone a "traitor" who is, in fact, working against the interests on the United States of America.
Aside from this rather poor reasoning Snow's twist on the nature of the 911 attackers is rather sickening, as is any attempted justification of those infamous mass murderers. I no more care about their warped view of the world than I do Mengele's, Himmler's, Stalin's or Idi Amin's.
If you want to see how convoluted post-Cold War and post-911 marxist thinking can be, then knock yourself out. Buy this book.
"Information War" illuminates failure within the system.......2005-02-04
"Information War" illuminates the Bush administration's control of information in the post-9/11 era. Though it has been over three years since that event, the propaganda machine is still in full swing. Snow highlights the attack on people's intelligence via scare tactics, the vilification of anyone who disagrees with Bush policies, and the unqualified folks put in charge of selling America and its policies to the world.
There is also a history of propaganda to show how a pacifist United States was drummed into a warmongering and blood-thirsty country during World War I. In other words, what Bush and his cronies do isn't new, it's part of a grand American tradition. Empires need propaganda to keep free thought at bay. Just look at Nazi Germany. Snow does.
The comparison is frightening. So, what do we do when the ad manager for Uncle Ben's rice tries to sell America to Arab countries? And what do we do when even the mainstream media is pressured to censor itself? We cannot trust the mainstream anymore (if we ever could), especially when it is so conservatively skewed. Nancy Snow provides the clarion call for all with a mind to speak up.
At this time, perhaps more than ever since this is a nuclear age, it is important to have research out there that tells it like it is about the policies of this country. Information control is not a good thing, especially for the so-called leader of the free world. The truth must be hard to take, but considering the non-stop lies of the Bush administration, Snow knows it will be difficult to understand. Give "Information War" a spin with an open mind, and find yourself edified.
Then take some action.
Self-Referential work.......2004-12-23
Ms Snow quotes J Goebbels to the effect that the intellectual content of propaganda need not be high, then continues to demonstrate the same concerning books about propaganda. Her opus
is a sketchy collection of ultra-left agitprop, and is published by the same people who bring us N. Chomsky and Angela Davis. I give
two stars since the book has merit as an object for study. The
editing of the book is amateurish, with misspellings, mispunctuations and contains the very odd word "lookyloo".
A caustic, keen-eyed, and highly recommended "must-read".......2004-08-10
Information War: American Propaganda, Free Speech, And Opinion Control Since 9-11 is a candid and disturbing look at how government and media have used spin control and propaganda to shape popular opinion and guide the nation toward a specific political agenda regardless of dissent since the September 11th attacks. Identifying common propaganda techniques such as card-stacking (selectively quoting facts in order to build a case against an opponent that ignores the whole truth of situations the facts refer to), labelling, bandwagon appeal (building support for an idea by perpetuating the sentiment that "everybody" is in favor of it) and much more, it goes on to spot these techniques used in recent quotes from individuals and spokespeople in the turbulent and often militaristic speeches since the attacks. A caustic, keen-eyed, and highly recommended "must-read" for anyone seeking to understand what is really going on underneath recent American rhetoric.
Uneven work shows the propaganda machine at work.......2004-08-02
A VERY short, extremely partisan and ultimately focusless collection of essays by a veteran of the United States Information Agency, the propaganda arm of the government during the Cold War. The USIA is now defunct, subsumed into other departments during the federal restructuring that saw the birth of the Dept. of Homeland Security. Snow is strongest when she is explaining the role and history of propaganda in international affairs. There is also a moving portrait of Rep. Barbara Lee, the sole Representative to try to hold onto Congressional control of War Powers after the Sept. 11 attacks. Congressional War Powers have been a joke since before I was born, but it's nice to see one person stand up for them. There are many other issues addressed here, but it's like a bag of potato chips; three days later, you don't remember them.
Book Description
Asserting that a flight certificate is a pilot's ``license to learn,'' this unique book offers valuable lessons learned by veteran pilots. Using the anecdotal style that has made his Flying magazine column so popular, Fried bridges the gap between pilot training and in-flight experience with his advice on vital but often under-emphasized areas of: maneuvering speed; weight and balance; aircraft control; prop safety; night flying; altitude.

SOME GOOD INFORMATION BUT A MIXED BAG.......2002-03-26
If your looking for a book jam packed with practical piloting techniques only don't buy the book. At the same time it mostly sticks to title and subtitle. I would give it three and one half stars if there was that option. The book does contain useful information with a broad range of topics from practical information such as landing technique to reasons to be skeptical of the FAA. I will keep the book around to reread.
If this is beyond the checkride, I wish to remain a student.......2001-11-26
The concept of a book aimed at private pilots is a good one. As a low-time private I know that there are many golden nuggets of knowledge that experienced pilots have to share that can save me a hard learning experience. With this in mind, I purchased Beyond the Checkride.
I did learn a few things from this book, mainly that Fried disdains the FAA and wants the flying public to share his feelings. The book is filled with stories of the FAA abusing its power.
In addition to its lack of content, this book is poorly written. Fried continually repeats himself and uses unclear phrases. It's amazing that any editor would allow this book to be published.
If you are interested in reading a real aviation book, buy Stick and Rudder. I guarantee you'll learn from Stick and Rudder. The only thing to be learned from Beyond the Checkride is that the very same agency that issued your pilot certificate will soon try to take it back, an idea not helpful to your skills.
Fun read, but mostly anecdotal.......2001-10-23
Not a lot of depth or specific vision in the stories. A fun read, but doesn't quite live up to it's controversial name.
If your CFI didn't teach you this.............2000-10-11
The book is well written and filled with useful information. However, it concerns me that Howard felt that CFIs aren't teaching this information. I purchased it before I finished my flight training and felt that it was a valuable asset to my learning experience.
Very useful, full of common sense.......1999-09-11
Beyond The Checkride (What your instructor never taught you) Once I began reading. I completed the book the same day. Although I am a new pilot, (250 hrs) I believe any pilot would gain new insights from Howards common sense, tell it like it is approach.

Book Description
Valerie Winslow never thought life in the tiny country of Schwerinborg could be so great.
But then she never thought she would be dating the prince of Schwerinborg either! Georg, a real prince, is also her first real boyfriend.
And then everything falls apart. Georg's decided they need to cool off for a while and her dad's sending her back to Virginia to visit her mom.
Valerie's bummed -- until she decides to go out with her old crush, David Anderson. David may not be a prince, but maybe he'll take her mind off of Georg -- or will he?

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-07-02
When we last left Valerie, she had moved to Schwerinborg with her father after her mother dropped the news that she was gay. After arriving, Valerie set her eyes on Georg, the royal family's very cute son. And in the end Valerie got the guy and is beginning to get used to her new life in Schwerinborg.
Valerie Winslow is back with a whole new set of problems. Turns out dating a future prince isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. What with all the cameras and reporters tracking your every move, and the tabloids hungry for some juicy inside news, it sure doesn't help when you are caught in the bathroom with the prince -- and when a pack of cigarettes falls out from behind the toilet.
But when a newspaper takes the story a little too far, the entire royal family and their staff that handles public relations are trying to make things right. With all the pressure, though, Georg decides that he and Valerie need to "cool off" for awhile, but what exactly does "cool off" mean? Valerie's father thinks this is the perfect time for a visit with her mother, while things settle down in Schwerinborg.
Going back home shouldn't be so bad, what with getting to hang out with her friends and her mother. But it turns out that alerie's "relationship" with Georg made headlines in Virginia, and now her friends all know what Valerie has been keeping from them. To make matters worse, Valerie still hasn't told them about her mother and her girlfriend.
Going back to Virginia does have its advantages when Valerie decides to go on a date with her longtime crush, David Anderson, who apparently has had his eye on her since she left. Will going out with David help Valerie decide if he is the right one for her? Or will it just make her miss Georg even more?
SPIN CONTROL is the perfect follow up to the last novel, Royally Jacked. The author makes Valerie stronger than ever, what with all the issues she has to deal with. Not only that, but SPIN CONTROL delves deeper into the issue of having a parent or any family member that is gay and helps us see it in a whole new light. This is another great read from Niki Burnham, who never seems to disappoint.

Great.......2005-08-01
My friends and I all read and loved Royally Jacked (the prequel about a girl who falls in love with a prince). When we finished, we were like, "Thats it! Where the heck is the rest?!" So you an imagine how excited we were when we found out about Spin Control. It picks off right where Royally Jacked leaves off.
This book is GREAT. Though I like Royally Jacked better, this comes pretty close to a tie. It touches bases with some very important issues. The question of "can you make a true 'connection' with two different people comes up. The book also brings in the whole "My mom is a lesbian" issue without going into any 'physical' details. Which makes it suitable for even young readers. I really enjoyed it.
Even Better than Royally Jacked!.......2005-03-25
Niki Burnham's sequel to Royally Jacked is even better than the first. Spin Control takes place right where Royally Jacked leaves off with Valerie finally getting her Prince. But her life isn't the fairy tale she thought it would be when the newspapers start a horrible rumor about her. Her life begins to spin out of control. Then Georg suggests they "cool off", and a confused Val heads home to spend Winter Break with her mom and unfortunately her mom's girlfriend, Gabrielle. Back home she has to face her friends who still don't know that her mom has come out of the closet and are already mad at her for not telling them about her relationship with Prince Georg. But things start to pick up when her old crush David pops back into the picture.
Spin Control answers all the unanswered questions Royally Jacked left. Burnham delves into Val's relationship with her mother and the secrets she had kept from her friends. And we find out whom her heart truly belongs to. It's a lighthearted comedy that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. If you haven't read either book, you should order them both today. You won't be disappointed.
Niki Burnham does not disappoint!!!.......2005-03-17
Niki Burnham is now one of my favorite authors. She captured me with "Royally Jacked" and stole my heart with "Spin Control".
These books are just completely awesome! If you are into teen comedic romances, than you should totally be reading these books.
"Spin Control" picks up right where "Royally Jacked" left off. In this one the main character Valerie has to go back to the States, after living in a German palace for a month, because of a little media problem shes having with her new bf. But home doesnt get any better. There are several issues she has to face with her friends and her mom, who just came out the closet. Going home also makes her have to decided who she wants to be with: David, the guy shes been crushing on forever who is FINALLY starting to notice her or Georg, her prince who really gets her and doesnt judge about the whole gay mom thing.
Though its probably true that a prince doesnt fall in love with an ordinary girl, all the time, its concept and meaning are completely heart felt and relatible. You'll love every part of it!
Fabulous Sequel to 'Royally Jacked'.......2005-03-09
Valerie Winslow seriously had her doubts about how life in the small country of Schwerinborg would treat her, but once she began dating Prince Georg, those doubts dissolved, leaving her blissfully happy. After all, Georg is a Prince - just like in all those fairytales - but he's also Val's first true boyfriend. Unfortunately, just when everything is going absolutely perfect, it all falls apart. Tabloids throughout the world begin running pictures of the two teens, depicting their relationship, and accusing the both of them of being promiscuous, doing drugs, drinking, and smoking, which is all totally untrue. The most Val and Georg have done is make-out a few times. Val feels that the two of them will be able to make it through this, but Georg has his doubts, and informs Valerie that they should "cool off for a while." And that is how Valerie ends up at her mom's apartment in Virginia. Valerie couldn't be more bummed, until she finds out that her old crush, David Anderson, wants to go out with her. Valerie jumps at the chance. After all, David may not be a Prince, but he may be the perfect distraction...
Niki Burnham has done it again, and created a sequel in SPIN CONTROL that definitely challenges it's predecessor ROYALLY JACKED. As always, Valerie's hilarious freak-out persona, and worry wart tendencies make her a lovable character, who steals the show. While her friends and their many wacky e-mails will have the reader laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Filled with many fantastic "romantic" situations, SPIN CONTROL is sure to please readers. I only hope that Niki Burnham decides to write yet another book about Val's adventures in romance.

terrific investigative legal thriller .......2006-09-10
In Northern California Judge "Taylor the Jailor" informs FBI agent Justin Russo just because he fires his lawyers in court that he will not receive any delay to prepare his new representation. Justin asks Judge Taylor to appoint attorney Suzannah Ryder, who is in court having worked on another case, to defend him. The Judge gives her no choice so she reluctantly agrees to be his defense lawyer as he is on trial for second degree murder. Worse, the judge frees him on bail into her custody.
Hearing his facts and with no other information, Suzannah begins her defense by spinning the image of the accused into that of a handsome heroic hunk who she hopes a predominant female jury will desire and free. However, when she looks into his eyes, she begins to wonder if he committed the act especially as the evidence mounts against her client. With Taylor pushing to end the trial fast and allowing her no flexibility, she wonders if perhaps this time she is defending a heated killer though she finds whatever SPIN she takes she still wants the Fed.
This is a terrific investigative legal thriller that hooks the audience from the opening prologue and never slows down until the final confrontation. The exciting story line is filled with action, but also contains a terrific romantic subplot. Like his lawyer, readers will slowly begin to believe that Justin is guilty as Kate Donovan spins a strong romantic suspense thriller.

Book Description
Dynamic Spin Chemistry Edited by Saburo Nagakura, Hisaharu Hayashi and Tohru Azumi Because of increasing concerns over the effects of electromagnetic radiation on the human body, it has become essential to understand how chemical and biological reactions are affected by magnetic fields. Dynamic Spin Chemistry focuses on theoretical and experimental research showing the great influence on the dynamic behavior of molecules due to external magnetic fields, such as magnetic quenching of gaseous fluorescence, effects on chemical reaction rates and chemically induced dynamic nuclear and electron polarization. This book discusses both the theoretical and experimental foundations of dynamic spin chemistry, as well as its future trends. After the introductory chapter, the next three chapters discuss magnetic field effects and magnetic isotope effects on chemical reactions in solution and on the dynamic behavior of excited molecules in the gas phase. Subsequent chapters deal with the effects on chemical equilibria under large fields; spin spectroscopy; chemically induced dynamic electron polarization (CIDEP) studies and reaction yield-detected ESR. This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in pure and applied chemistry, physics or biology having an interest in photochemistry, photophysics or photobiology.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The NPSAT1 satellite uses an active magnetic torque rod system, with a magnetometer for attitude determination, to maintain 3-axis stabilization, with a slightly gravity gradient friendly structure, This thesis will examine the performance of three combinations of programs and simulation models for the NPSAT1 satellite attitude control system. The models include a magnetic control law with a reduced order estimator to generate torque commands to achieve spacecraft nadir pointing and a magnetic rate (Bdot) control law to reduce spacecraft angular rates. The performances of two Bdot mode switching designs are compared Also, a case is made for the benefits of performing the system's reduced estimator prior to mode switching. All of the control methods analyzed appear to be valid control methods to achieve three-axis attitude stabilization using only magnetic torquers for active control. The most efficient control method analyzed incorporates a hand-off method from a magnetic rate (Bdot) control loop to a magnetic control loop. The results of this analysis indicates that the best use of this method is to perform the Bdot hand-off following the achievement of a predetermined combined angular rate.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Effective decision making in aeronautical environments, which often involves high elements of risk, is critical to mission success. Unfortunately, no proven methodology exists to train pilots to make successful decisions. Cockpit decision making has relied on traditional analytical models and methodologies that underestimate the role of pilot experience, expertise and judgement Naturalistic Decision Making models (NDM) contend that decision makers facing real-world decisions use experience and judgement to make timely decisions without analyzing a multitude of alternatives. This thesis analyzes 438 P-3 aviation hazard reports (hazreps) to ascertain which cognitive strategies from either the analytical or naturalistic methodology are more appropriate for handling malfunctions situations. The author presents a hybrid model of decision making by P-3 pilots based on the results of the analysis and strategies from both methodologies. This thesis recommends that decision making training be treated as a core activity of pilots not only in flight school, but alter qualification is complete. Training pilots to become experts will improve situational awareness and reduce the number of unfavorable outcomes in hazardous situations.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A130293. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research involved the design and implementation of a complete line-addressable control system for a 32x32 electrostatic piston-actuated micromirror array device. Line addressing reduces the number of control lines from N^2 to 2N making it possible to design larger arrays and arrays with smaller element sizes. The system utilizes the electromechanical bi-stability of individual elements to bold arbitrary bi-stable phase patterns. The control system applies pulse width modulated (PWM) signals to the rows and columns of the micromirror array. Three modes of operation were conceived and built into the system. The first was the traditional signal scheme which requires the array to be reset before a new pattern can be applied. The second is an original scheme that allows dynamic switching between bi-stable patterns. The third and final mode applies an effective voltage ramp across the device by operating above mechanical cutoff. Device characterization and control system testing were conducted on predesigned and prefabricated samples from two different foundry processes. Testing results showed that the control system was successfully integrated. However, bi-stable control of individual mirror elements was not successfully demonstrated on samples due to flaws in the device design. A more robust device design which corrects these flaws and increases operational yield is proposed.
