THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER
Set in a world torn apart, where man enslaves his fellow man and freedom remains elusive, THE POWER OF ONE is the moving story of one young man's search for the love that binds friends, the passion that binds lovers, and the realization that it takes only one to change the world. A weak and friendless boy growing up in South Africa during World War II, Peekay turns to two older men, one black and one white, to show him how to find the courage to dream, to succeed, to triumph over a world when all seems lost, and to inspire him to summon up the most irrersistible force of all: the Power of One.

5 out of 5 stars Buy two, keep one and give the other to a friend........2007-07-17

My favorite book of all time - and I'm a picky reader. You will become entranced in Peekay's world and never want to leave it. This should be on every person's bookshelf and handed out to every young adult.

Other advice: rent the movie first, then read the novel and you'll be able to appreciate the book more. Also, the sequel "Tandia" is good, but not as powerful as TPOO

4 out of 5 stars The ending will leave you speechless.......2007-06-30

Most five year olds feel insecure and afraid in the world, but take away a child's mother, an apparently absent father, and only a black nanny to take care of the while child in South Africa and what remains will undoubtedly be a child that quickly learns to fend for himself. The question that remains is how successful will that child be? Peekay, with a strong mind and stronger heart, proves that the Power of One can be all the power one needs to succeed.

Peekay, an English child in South Africa at the start of WWII, has everything that he knows turned upside down when he is told that his mother has suffered a nervous breakdown and he must attend boarding school many miles from home. He is the youngest student by two years and is picked on mercilessly by the older children. This physical and mental abuse causes him to wet the bed which, in turn, increases his torment. Peekay uses life's earliest challenges to form the inner strength that he will need to overcome lifelong adversity. Over the years he develops a love for boxing and his goals surround the sport. He also discovers his aptitude for academics and is brought along by friends that are unique in their quirkiness as well as loyalty.

The Power of One is a moving and highly entertaining story of a boy who will not let himself fail. The novel portrays a courage and spirit of youth that defies one's expectations given the obstacles that get in the main character's way. Supporting characters are developed so that they come alive and the reader will be unable to follow Peekay's successes without a sense of pride themselves. The last twenty pages turn the book on it's head and finish with such an unexpected shock that it will leave the reader speechless. But somehow, it is a fitting ending to a thrilling journey that is difficult to put down.

5 out of 5 stars The Great South African Novel.......2007-06-18

This expertly written novel tells the story of a boy whose chance meeting with a boxer leads him to focus his life on becoming the welterweight champion of the world.

The heart of the novel is the inspiring friendships he forms with the richly shaped characters that he encounters as he grows up.

The author's ability to tell a capturing story, and the smooth way he tells it, has produced a classic book well worth reading.

Book Description

The next twenty-four hours will be crucial to America's survival. A determined band of terrorists holds the key to bringing down the government by plunging the country into darkness, fear, and chaos -- a nightmare born not in a distant enemy land . . . but rather in the heart of America itself.

After a mission gone bad, Counter Terrorist Unit operative Jack Bauer is relegated to infiltrating a dangerous homegrown militia group -- and stumbles upon information about an activated sleeper cell of Middle Eastern terrorists on American soil. But the roots of the insidious threat may go deeper than he suspects, firmly planted in the lies and treacheries of powerful government agencies. And without the trust and support of his CTU superiors, Jack may have to rely on the very fanatics he's sworn to destroy . . . or face an earth-shattering catastrophe at the end of the day.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-11

As a fan of the TV show I looked forward to reading novels based on '24'. The first book I read (Operation Hell Gate) was a decent novel and it supplemented the down time between seasons. With respect to this book, however, I would agree with other comments that have been made - generic thriller, plot holes, confusing timing, poor character development, inconsistencies, and some editing errors.

I also have a personal gripe with this book (and others that are based on popular TV shows). Television is obviously regulated on what can be said and shown to viewers, and I wish authors would adhere to these same rules for the sake of consistency. For example, the language in this book is very graphic. Jack finds himself in the same stressful situations as seen on TV, yet in the novel he (and others) let the expletives fly. I found this to be very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Action, Great for "24" fans ..........2007-02-05

My gripe with this book is a couple of the sexist sentences ... On page 179, Nina says to Jack Bauer "You are going to want to make out with me when I show you this". A few such bits to me were so exasperating & just plain stupid that they distracted me from the otherwise good plot. I'm no militant femnist, but come on!

And I was also suprised to see former Detroit Piston's Bad Boy Bill Laimbeer's name misspelled. That's so easy to check.

4 out of 5 stars Another Thriller.......2007-01-15

The writer continues to bring the characters to life as in the series. Jack Bauer, CTU and the supporting cast are well represented.

2 out of 5 stars Not really related to the show.......2006-06-30

I agree that this book wasn't very well written. As a thriller, it wasn't that bad of a book, but as an 'episode' of 24, it wasn't good at all. The characters may have been named Jack Bauer, Nina Meyers, Tony Almeida, etc., but they weren't at all the same as the TV characters. They might have been named Joe Smith and Mary Jones for all the resemblance they had to their TV counterparts, which is none. Also, some of the mistakes made in this book were just plain stupid (check the president's itinerary, people!), and Jack and CTU really came off looking bad more than once. Lastly, there was no conclusion or closure, no tying up of loose ends; it just.... ended. I've read "Hell Gate," and it was pretty good, and I'm looking forward to "Trojan Horse." I'm sure I'll be able to give it more than two stars.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhere in the middle.......2006-05-31

From the reviews I've read on here, it seems like this is a "love it or hate it" novel, with strong arguments from both sides. What I found is that it's an average thriller, one not nearly up to the standards of the amazing show from which it's taken.

The plot has been covered already, so I'll skip it. What I will say is that Jack Bauer comes across much better as a TV character, at least when compared to this novel. His actions here are similar to what he does on TV each week, but there just doesn't seem to be any complexity to his character. Same goes for others who appear in this novel, none of whom are in any way fleshed out.

Since this takes place in the '90s, it takes a while to get over hearing names like Tony, Nina, and George Mason without thinking, "Wait a second, aren't they dead?" The majority of CTU staff appear rarely, and those not familiar with the show will likely have no idea of these characters' motivations. As for Kelly, an introduced boss at CTU, he's pretty uninteresting.

The story isn't a bad one, and it at least fits the model of the show. However, the characters fall flat and the pacing drags at parts. Recommended only for 24 fans, and even then I'll warn that it's not a great book.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle of 1060 and all that.......2006-09-01

MGM's movie, based on the book by L. Frank Baum,"The Wizard of Oz,"is nearly 70 years old. But its stars, Judy Garland, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton, still shine brightly as ever, and the movie continues to be a particular favorite of young and old.

Aljean Harmetz is the daughter of a woman who worked backstage at MGM. Harmetz's mother worked in the Wardrobe Department; she was able to estimate sewing costs on thousands of costumes, from 1937 to 1951 --including the nearly one thousand needed for "The Wizard of Oz,"alone.

So starting from this birds' eye view, Harmetz is well able to explain how "movie magic and studio power in the prime of MGM" resulted in "the miracle of Production #1060." To that end, she did hundreds of interviews, with actors, singers, songwriters, cameramen, screen writers, costumers, directors, and technicians. She succeeded in bringing the great glory days of MGM, under its sentimental czar L.B. Mayer, to technicolor life.

Harmetz explains how the Emerald City was designed and built; how the cyclone was created. She tells us how Judy Garland's immortal "Over the Rainbow" was nearly lost, as envious, nitpicking producers responded after the film's first screening: "Why does she sing in a barnyard? Take it out!"

The author gives us fine portraits of Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West--"she enjoyed every moment screaming about those slippers." Binnie Barnes, who played the Good Witch Glinda, retiring to her pink and blue dressing room to await her next call. Bert Lahr creating the endearing cowardly lion-- his costume weighed over 50 pounds. "It was like carrying a mattress around with you," he said. And he could only sip liquids once in full makeup. Ray Bolger, the dancer who created the Scarecrow, " I have no bones. I have nothing inside me. It's just the wind holding me up." And Jack Haley who inherited the Tin Woodman's part after an allergic reaction to the aluminum paste makeup, put Buddy Ebsen, first cast for the part, in hospital.

You should find you read these marvelously detailed pages with great enjoyment, and if you're as sentimental a fool as I can sometimes be, even with emotional involvement. If you love the movie, you might want to try to find this book.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie itself... if thats possible........2003-08-09

The making of the Wizard of Oz is a wonderful book to anyone who has grown to love the Wizard of Oz. You don't even have to be an obsessive fan of the movie like myself to enjoy it. It is extremely well researched. If information is not known the author says it so and does not attempt to recreate history as some nonfiction works do.

Perhaphs what makes the 1939 movie so wonderful is learning all the behind the scenes things that went into making it. This book gives respect and a knew sense of understanding as to what movie making was like in the biggest studio of that time. It is written so that it doesn't need to be read front to back. You can start in the special effects section and finish in the chapter about the script, or the music, or the directors (did you know there were four?).

Did you know that the movie had the work of 10 writers or do you know how the surrender dorothy scene was done? Well, in this book you find out his and thousands more did you know facts to impress friends. I recommend this to anyone who has watched the Wizard of Oz. And if Oz didn't win an academy award for best picture in 1939 than that was because the academy didn't have this book to help choose.

5 out of 5 stars A Peek Behind the Curtain.......2002-07-28

If you're a die hard fan of this classic film then you'll want to read this well-researched "making of" tome. The book is filled with all sorts of wonderful trivia tidbits but most of all it gives an insightful review of those behind the camera in a way I've yet to find in other "OZ" related books. The one and only shortcoming of this book is to be found in the number of pictures, in my opinion there could have been more, otherwise it's a behind the scenes look that most OZ fans won't be disappointed with.

5 out of 5 stars What a wicked world! Me, a cult icon from an MGM kid-flick!.......2001-09-07

It doesn't matter unduly if you didn't grow up watching MGM's 1939 color movie "The Wizard of Oz" in re-release or on TV. You might think that a "Munchkin" is what used to be called a "doughnut hole." You may think of Judy Garland only as Liza Minnelli's mother, and avoid prewar movies like the plague. Maybe you didn't feel that shock of recognition that "Cora the Coffee Lady" in Maxwell House TV commercials was none other than Margaret Hamilton, the green-faced Wicked Witch of the West.

Of course, if you love "The Wizard of Oz" you've love THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ all the more. I just read this book for the second time (the first upon its initial publication), and was astonished and pleased by how well it has held up. Author Aljean Harmetz has crafted a book relevant not only in terms of one particular "prestige" movie off the Hollywood assembly line; but indeed her insight, research and friendly presentation make the book stand as a metaphor of all Hollywood filmmaking during the height of the Studio Era, ca. 1940. Perhaps the late Irving Thalberg was one of the few Hollywood insiders who could "keep the whole equation of pictures inside his head," but Ms. Harmetz opens up this world for us, and shows us both its realism and its wonder.

We return to an era in which studio moguls were as eccentric and powerful as today's software barons, when studio hands were nonunionized yet intensely loyal to their studios, when no movie studio even thought about a future containing broadcast TV, when movie stars were better known than Presidents or Kings, and when Technicolor would give you any color except the one you wanted. Nonetheless, solving the creative problems inherent in bringing L. Frank Baum's novel "The Wizard of Oz" to the screen was seen as an invigorating set of challenges to be met and conquered.

Back then, MGM had a real "can-do" attitude. So no one had
ever created a moving tornado for a film? After two tries the MGM tech people got it right, and the depiction of that horrendous twister so set the tintype for what a tornado ought to look like that it persists in our collective consciousness today, despite today's ubiquitous video cameras.

There were no tape recorders. How, then, to raise or lower voices artificially for dubbing? This book tells how. What happened when Buddy Ebsen almost died from an allergy to aluminum dust he had worn as the (originally intended) Tin Man? Why was Margaret Hamilton burned severely and ignored, yet Billie Burke turned an ankle and was whisked off the set in a white ambulance? Why did the film need four directors and half a dozen screenwriters, yet was fondly recalled as a labor of love by practically everyone except a prematurely embittered Judy Garland? Was the film the great commercial and critical success you might think it would be? And, by the way, what about those Munchkins' alleged sexual proclivities? Excellent answers provided by excellent research present a fully-formed world view, warts and all.

THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ would be a wonderful companion to the new restored DVD version of the film, which is so crisp you can count the gingham checkers on Dorothy's blue dress (which was actually violet, to fool the Technicolor process). How were the ruby slippers made? What about that poppy field? Read on. Some critics have said that Harmetz's later work is not as excruciatingly well researched as THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ, but I don't care. This book and the movie are not only as much fun as ever, but a great education in the good old/bad old days of the Hollywood "Dream Factory." Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Look at the Old Hollywood Studio System.......2001-07-14

"The Making of the Wizard of Oz: Movie Magic and Studio Power in the Prime of MGM--And the Miracle of Production No 1060" is just downright enthralling. It is an expose' that breaks down the machinery and the machinations of what it took to get a major movie made in the days of the autocratic studio heads. The book offers an entertaining and totally engrossing look at the legendary film. Judy, Ray, Jack, Bert, Margaret, and Toto, too, are all analyzed in this brilliant work. The songwriters, the respective directors, the many other craftsmen, as well as the "little people," in more than the figurative sense, are all here. Vividly embellished with stills from the production, the book's text is just as captivating. The familiar as well as the unfamiliar stories about the production make for a most satisfying read for any "Oz" fan. It is also a good primer for anyone with an interest in pursuing film as a career.

5 out of 5 stars "Something Wicca this way comes" Charmed ep. 1-1 name........2007-02-21

This book was AWSOME! From the introduction to magic to the great defeat at the end. To start with to say, I liked this book because it did not follow the same exact storyline as the show. It had the same idea and characters; it just added and tweaked some things. The beginning started off a little bit boring, but I thought it was funny when Phoebe just came out of nowhere in the beginning. The spirit board part was informing though. The fighting sisters part was okay, but lets get to the interesting part when the lights go out. Once Phoebe finds the Book of Shadows (BOS). Once they get their powers it gets more interesting. But like Phoebe would know her sisters would not go with it, as it would be a joke. Okay, the talking broomstick part and all of that stuff was cool I guess. To make you understand Prue can move things with her mind, Phoebe see the future, and Piper can stop time. From the part of Prue choking her boss my tightening his tie with her anger (that is how she learns to control her power), to Piper giving herself more time in the kitchen by getting scared, or Phoebe saving kids from a car, it is interesting. Once they finally learn from Phoebe they have powers they all need to protect themselves from Jeremy, especially Piper being the girlfriend. Once Jeremy learns Piper has her powers (Jeremy is a warlock) they need to use magic to stop him. They use a magic to kill him with love, but that only hurts him, the sisters need to pull together and save each other with the spell on the spirit board. "The power of three will set us free." They finally kill Jeremy. Now knowing the are witches, a long road is in store for them...... A LONG DANGEROUS ROAD.

This all happened when Phoebe the youngest sister came back from New York. Only Piper, the middle sister knew that phoebe was coming. Prue got angry because no body told her Phoebe was coming. Phoebe went to the attic and read a spell out of the book of shadow. They received speacial powers. prue could move things with her mind, Piper can freeze time, and Phoebe can see the past. An eavil warlock wanted their powers, so he needed to kill them. The three sisters were trapped but they said a spell to destroy the warlock. You should read this book no matter what

I watched the first episode when I was way too young to remember, I began watching it fanatically in the 4th season and I found this book in my next door neighbour's library. It is different in scenes, naturally, from the actual pilot, it was much, much better. When I watched the first episode after it, it didn't explain Roger well and Melinda Warren but the book explained it brilliantly. I reccomend this book for all Charmed fans, it is necessary for your collection.

    Book Description

All born-again believers have a surrendered, submitted, regenerated human spirit in communion with the Spirit of God. This is one issue that is settled, and we can cling to it with certainty no matter what else seems to be happening in our lives! These same born-again believers can still struggle with erroneous beliefs. This book includes answers to these actual questions and many more:

Question: Why can't I stop fantasizing about things, and settle for what I have?

Question: How can you tell if a soul tie has been formed? Question: What do you mean by soulish prayers? Isn't all prayer good, just as long as you are praying?

5 out of 5 stars the mystery deepens.......2006-11-03

My 8-year-old son is a big fan of the bionicle toys and I think his initial interest had a lot to do with the bionicle books series. I'm sure many people look at these books as just a marketing ploy, but they are so much more than that. A rich history, full of mystery, adventure and action have been brought to life in all of the bionicle series. The "Legends" series is no exception. Our copies of "Power Play" and "Dark Destiny" arrived the day before we left for San Diego to visit Legoland. My son brought them on the plane along with his gameboy. He became so engrossed in the books that the gameboy didn't get any play! He read straight through! A few weeks later I picked up the books and found out for myself why. The story of the Toa, Matoran, Inika, and Piraka is fantastic. This series is by far more involved than any of the past Bionicle book series. By the end of "Power Play" I was thirsting for more and once through "Dark Destiny" could not wait for the next book to see what was going to happen! I highly recommend the books for boys and girls alike, particularly if they are in to the bionicles. Even if they are not big readers, the interest in the stories will convert them!

5 out of 5 stars odd stories but my daughter loves it.......2006-11-17

Along with Blue's, Rolie Polie Olie, Caillou, Dora, the Backyardigans is up there on my 2 1/2 yr old's request for reading material. I try to see what she sees in the book, since I like the televized Backyardigan series more than the book....but mommy is just happy little one loves it.

      5 out of 5 stars Such a great, imagination-provoking book!.......2006-09-01

I bought this book after my daughter became infatuated with the 'Race to the Tower of Power' episode. When it came, it definitely did not disappoint. Becoming a superhero has become her favorite role since and she is frequently searching around for someone who needs help. A must-buy for any little Backyardigans fans out there!!

5 out of 5 stars Great library addition for any backyardigans fan!!!.......2006-07-29

      WAHAHA!
We sure love reading this book at bedtime.
My daughter LOVES the backyardigans, and they really made fun books straight from some of the TV episodes.

4 out of 5 stars A Longer Backyardigans Book (That My Son Loves!).......2006-04-18

Previous Backyardigans books have been shorter, such as Ready-to-Read Level 1. However, this is one is longer than usual which is great for kids with longer attention spans.

Race to the Tower of Power is a 22-page softcover featuring Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua and Austin. Pablo is the supervillian Yucky Man, who slimes everything in sight, while Tyrone is Dr. Shrinky, who shrinks objects and foes. These "supervillians" want to capture the Key to the World that is hidden in the Tower of Power.

But not so fast! Two superheroes are there to stop them! Austin is Captain Hammer, who can build anything with the tap of his hammer. Uniqua is Weather Woman who has the power to change the weather. Both will need their superpowers to stop those determined villians!

Race to the Tower of Power has the Backyardigans battling it out to see who can get to the Tower of Power first. In the end, the supervillians have a change of heart and take on new names--as superheroes! (Although Pablo seems reformed against his will. *chuckle*)

This is an engaging story that my 7 year old LOVES. Since buying it for him, he's asked for it as a bed time story every single night!

My only misgiving is that they use the word "hate" several times in the book. That word is a 'no-no- in our house, and I was disappointed that writers felt a need to include it. (It's unnecessary to the story.)

All in all, a very colorful, exciting story for youngsters!

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Friends Forever.......2005-01-23

THE CHEETAH GIRLS: GROWL POWER FOREVER by Deborah Gregory takes us on an adventure of five teenage girls who dream of becoming superstars. The book is a compilation of four stories which allows us to get to know each girl up close and personal. The girls who have that growl power are: Galleria 'Bubbles' Garibaldi, Chanel 'Chuchie' Simmons, Dorinda 'Do Re Mi' Rogers, and the twins Anginette and Aquanette Walker.

In Showdown at the Okie-Dokie the girls win a talent show, but are accused of stealing their competitor's lyrics. Can the girls remain in unity during this fiasco? Chuchifrita Ballerina is the story of Chanel attempting to make her dream of becoming a prima ballerina come true. Will she be able to make her dream a reality and still be down with the Cheetah Girls? How will she be able to swing both without someone or something being neglected? In Dorinda Gets Her Groove, Dorinda lives in a foster home but eventually meets her biological sister Tiffany. Tiffany dreams of becoming a Cheetah Girl, but the other girls aren't too keen on the idea. Will Dorinda have to choose between her sister and the group? In the House With Mouse is about record producer Mouse Almighty wanting to produce the girls demo tape; the girls have to really strut their stuff to show they can shine in the spotlight.

THE CHEETAH GIRLS was a very enjoyable and entertaining read. Although the 608 pages were a bit intimidating at first, after getting into the stories and getting to know each girl personally, the pages flew by. There was a lot of slang used in the book and for adults who may not be aware of the defininitions of the words there is a very helpful Cheetah Girls glossary at the end of each story. Reading this book took me back to my teen years when me and my friends use to pretend we had a singing group, and how things would be if we made it big. The trip down memory lane brought back fond memories and in the words of the Cheetah girls this book was "spectaculous".

      5 out of 5 stars Nicole's second review.......2005-01-05

I liked the whole book a lot. I read books 11 and 12. Book 12 was great. I was hanging on every word for more information. The other book was all right. It could have told you more but it was still good. But over all, they were good. There were 4 books in 1so don't worry if it's long. I also wrote another review just to split it up.

Book # 11 was about Dorinda finding her sister and spending time with her. The other book was great. It was about Aqua and Angie going to the Mariah Carey concert and meeting Mariah with the rest of the cheetah girls. But then they go to vocal lessons and something bad happens. If you want to learn more, then read the book and find out more.

I think that girls should definitely read the book. Girls would understand it better. They should be a preteen up to an 18 year old because it's all about 5 teenage girls and their lives. The thing I didn't like about this book was there were 4 books in 1. I think it would be easier to read if it was 4 separate books than 1 book with 4 stories. I think it was confusing.

      4 out of 5 stars Nicole's Review.......2004-12-03

I was reading The Cheetah Girls books 9 and 10. I liked them, because they are about The Cheetah Girls' lives. Also I watched The Cheetah Girls movie, so I wanted to read their book.

This book is about these 5 girls who are in the music business. Their names are Galleria (Bubbles), Chanel (Chuchie), Dorinda (Do' Ra Mi), Anginette (Angie), and Aquanette (Aqua). The first book was about the show down at Okey Dokey. There are these girls that thinks the Cheetah Girls stole their song (Which they did) and they were being mean and rude. The second book was about Chanel trying to get into American Ballet Theater and if you want to hear more then read the book!!

I think a pretty good reader could understand these types of books. Now don't forget, there are 8 more books behind these books and you should read the other books first before you read these 4. And don't worry that it looks long because there are 4 books in 1 and if you see this type of book then look on the front cover and it will most likely tell you that it is, 1-4,5-8 or even what I am reading, 9-12! So don't panic if you see a book like this. I panicked when I saw that. I even said, "I can't finish all that in a month!" but I know now.

Hey I'm Courtney.I just finished reading this book and it was great!! The story of 5 girls trying to find their dreams of becoming a famous singing group is very inspiring to young girls every where who want to follow their own dreams. My favorite story in this combined book is Show down at the Okie Dokie. If you read all the cheetah girl books before this one you'll know that aqua and angie went to houston for Thanksgiving and they went to an audition for a houston helps its own concert starring Karmas Children. They get an opening spot and the rest of the cheetahs come down for the concert. They sing it's raining benjamins which was inspired by a dream chanel had where it was raining money had but they used some of the lyrics the Cash Money Girls (CMG) used in their song. And before they know it CMG is out to get the Cheetahs for bitin at they flava!!I'm not gonna tell you the rest cuz you should read this great book and the other two combined books!!So far I have all 3 combined books and I'm hoping there is a 4th one.
