This is the one book that anyone interested in Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers must have. It is accurate, informative, delightful to read and a beautiful book to own.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough History.......2005-10-29

This is a good book to read if you want to know more about how the Wheaten came to be, tracing its history and breeding from Ireland to the US. It also offers some great information on grooming and showing the breed. It's a lovely book which includes some very nice color photographs, written by a woman who definitely knows what she's talking about!

2 out of 5 stars The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier .......2005-08-03

It's very nice & informative BUT most of the pictures are Black & White...All Colored pictures would've been Better! Out of the 177 pages it had Only 8 (in the middle) were colored.

even there's no color...
a complete book from choosing a breeder to taking care of a 10 years old dog!

4 out of 5 stars Book of Gold.......1999-12-28

I do not yet own a soft coated wheaten terrier, but I found this book incredibly helpful. It backed up most of the information I had already learned about wheatens. There were a few questionable comments (diet, grooming) but the book was well-written, and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun, loved it.......2006-08-18

Garrett Files combines the murder mystery and science fiction/fantasy genres. Add to the fact the writer includes a LOT of humour and you have three delightfully enjoyable books in one. The plots are easy to follow; the characters are fully developed, and very likeable. I liked these stories so much I immediately bought all the Garrett series:
Garrett, P.I. (3 book compilation)
Garrett Investigates (3 book compilation)
Garrett on the Case (2 book compilation)
Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great detective/fantasy work, enjoyable set of books.......2006-06-23

This set of 3 books by Glen Cook does a lot to show the flexibility of this author, when contrasted with his Black Company series (I have yet to read the other series he has written). The three novels showcase the protagonist and his household in a number of lights, against enemies that are generally competent in their own right. Without spoilers, I felt that the detached resolution of book 3 was somewhat detached/anticlimatic, but overall this is a very enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Consolidation of the First Three Garrett Books.......2005-11-01

Since most of Cook's Garrett books are long out of print and very difficult to come by, you might end up having to buy this consolidation to find the individual stories. This book, "The Garrett Files," is the first of 3 consolidations (so far). The others are "Garrett, P.I." and "Garrett Investigates." This book contains the first three stories in the Garrett series: "Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," and "Cold Copper Tears." "Garrett, P.I." contains the next three: "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," and "Red Iron Nights." "Garrett Investigates" has the next three: "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat." The remaining two books ("Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols") still appear to be in print on their own. Regarding the physical book itself, I was very surprised by how good the quality was. When I was a youth I used to get books from the SFBC and the quality was less than stellar. This book appears well bound, has good quality paper, and is well cut. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what printing my book is. The date on this Amazon page is 2003. But, I can't find a date on mine anywhere (it's brand new). My cover is also different from the other one uploaded here (I've put a copy of mine here, too). Regardless, this is a very good book to have. As a pure average of my ratings for the three contained stories, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. My individual reviews follow:

"Sweet Silver Blues:" Excellent Start of the Garrett Series. This is the first of Cook's Garrett series. It's an excellent, humorous combination of Fantasy and early Detective novels (Raymond Chandler is the usual comparison). What always strikes me about this series, and especially this book (since it's the first), is how Cook's writing makes it feel like the world he's describing actually exists (and has existed for some time). It's like the history, geography, and people are THERE and he's merely opening a window to their world. This is an excellent book which I highly recommend to anyone who likes either Fantasy or Mystery. I rate it at 5 stars out of 5.

"Bitter Gold Hearts:" Very Good 2nd in the Garrett Series. This is the 2nd in Cook's Garrett series. It's a very good book, but isn't quite as good as the first in the series. The deficiency isn't anything major: it's just that I noticed a couple of the secondary characters whose personalities drastically changed from scene to scene (more so than the variability of human nature would allow). The additional role Cook gives to the Dead Man makes up for it, though. I rate it at a very good 4 stars out of 5.

"Cold Copper Tears:" An OK 3rd in Cook's Garrett Series. This is the 3rd in Cook's Garrett series. It's an excellent book for the first 99%, but, unfortunately, the ending fizzles. Oh, Garrett and the Dead Man figure things out nicely. All the 'i's are dotted and all the 't's crossed. But, instead of involving us in the denouement, Cook relegates the final cleanup to a background role. It just lacks that visceral feeling of closure. Solely because of the ending, I can rate this book at only an OK 3 stars out of 5.

Book Description

She has a chance to find something more precious than gold, if she’s brave enough to trust her heart. . . .

Her intense passion for unlocking the secrets of the past is what made Carter Wessex an archeologist. Now she’s been given a chance to dig on Farrell Mountain where a doomed party of minutemen lost their lives—as well as the gold they were carrying during the Revolutionary War. Carter refuses to let the mountain’s owner, Nick Farrell, rattle her, even though she’s all too aware of his sexy yet sardonic presence. Her work on the mountain could be the most significant find of her career . . . if she can pull herself away from the smoldering attraction that is undeniably growing between them.

Beneath the steely façade Nick Farrell wears like a well-cut suit, he is a man of hidden tenderness. From his first meeting with Carter, there’s an immediate flare—hotter than he has ever experienced before. But no one is more surprised than Nick when his desire for her deepens into something enduring. Now Nick must find a way to convince Carter that the real treasure to be found on Farrell Mountain is a true and lasting love. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Heart of Gold-A Joyfully Recommended Title!!.......2007-03-19

Carter Wessex is determined to get permission to dig on Farrell Mountain. As an archaeologist specializing in colonial America, she needs to be able to discover the secrets hidden on Farrell Mountain in order to prove her theory. However, in order to that she needs Nick Farrell's permission and he's never allowed anyone to dig on the mountain before. When Nick meets Carter he quickly realizes that her father is an important businessman who he would like to cultivate a relationship with. Finding out that Carter and her father are estranged, a situation her father would greatly like to changed, Nick thought that perhaps letting Carter dig on the mountain was a good way to establish a relationship with her father. Neither expected the attraction between them. With Carter's issues with her father, and Nick's inability to admit that he feels more for Carter than the usual desire for a woman, can they find away to build a lasting relationship? What will happen when Carter's father arrives and Carter discovers Nick's deception?

Although Heart of Gold is an older title, I had to do a review on it. One of the first books written by Jessica Bird, who is also JR Ward, it remains one of my all-time favorite contemporary romances. While browsing around, looking for new titles, I saw Heart of Gold, on the shelf. I immediately picked up a copy to re-read. Nick and Carter's story was just as enthralling as the first time I read it. Readers who haven't had the pleasure of reading Heart of Gold have missed a definite treat, and those who have will want to pull out their copies for another trip with Nick and Carter.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I couldn't put it down! I just finished ordering all the rest of her books I could find and am looking forward to reading them. I was hesitant to read Heart of Gold since I had never heard anything about the author before, so needless to say I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of read. I think it's safe to say Ms.Bird will undoubtedly gain the recognition and great reviews she deserves and hopefully will be writing lots more books in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-07-22

Carter Wessex arrives home from an archaeologist dig with only two things on her mind--cleaning all the dirt from under her finger nails and killing whatever is growing in her dirty laundry. Then best friend Grace Hall calls to coerce her into solving the Winship mystery surrounding Farrell Mountain. Carter knows this is a once in a lifetime chance to uncover the truth behind a 200 year old legend of buried gold, betrayal, and death. But Carter knows it's futile to even dream about digging on that mountain. Nick Farrell has no respect for "gold diggers" and loves nothing more than to kick them off his property. Cater makes the trip anyway and meets with Mr. Farrell. Three words pop into her head at her first look--intelligent, attractive, and powerful. Until he opens his mouth, then it's rude, arrogant, and insulting.
After meeting Carter, Nick realizes this woman is the estranged daughter of William Wessex. The very man Nick is involved in making a billion dollar deal with. He begins to wonder what it would be worth to Wessex for a chance to reconcile with the daughter who hasn't spoken to him in two years. Only after Nick falls for Carter does he find out how deep the bitter misunderstanding is between her and her father. His premeditated plans will drive Carter out of his life unless her love for him is stronger that her hurt.
As soon as I finished, my first thought was her next book can't be released soon enough for me. Everyone who read Jessica Bird's Leaping Hearts, Carter's cousin's story, knows what to expect and will not be disappointed with Heart of Gold. Very, very well written. The dialoge, the sub characters, plot, and sensuality were outstanding. My favortie part was Carter's discovery of Nick's secret. It took place far enough from the ending that there was plenty of time for the couple to resolve their issues.

5 out of 5 stars HEART OF GOLD - A golden heart-warming contemporary!.......2003-06-27

"Jessica Bird continues to soar with her second heartwarming contemporary, HEART OF GOLD for Ballantine/Ivy in April 2003. Archeologist/professor Carter Wessex is determined to get permission to dig in the mountains of billionaire, Nick Farrell's property in upstate NY to unravel a mystery and hopefully discover gold lost during the American Revolution. At first arrogant entrepreneur, Nick refuses the feisty Carter's request but he quickly changes his mind when he realizes who Carter's father is and that it could be advantageous to his latest business deal. This arrangement might be a deal maker for Nick's corporation but it could prove a heart breaker to his growing relationship with Carter when she finds out about his deal with her estranged father. With a delightful secondary love story between Nick's diabetic teenage nephew and Carter's dig partner's teenage daughter added to the highly combustible chemistry between the headstrong main couple, readers will enjoy one winning romance! HEART OF GOLD proves Jessica Bird's writing is golden with her inherent ability to pen terrific, touching, unique contemporaries that will guarantee romance readers will be her fans for life!"

4 out of 5 stars wonderful contemporary romance w a historical mystery.......2003-06-15

Colonial Era archeologist and historian, Carter Wessex agrees to accept a grant to dig on Farrell Mountain if she obtains the approval of corporate raider Nick Farrell. She is very excited about trying to solve the Revolutionary War mystery of what happened in 1775 to the Winship party and the gold they carried until she meets Nick. He is nasty and tosses her off his property.

When Nick connects the name to a business partner, he sees an opportunity to insure the man owes him favors as Carter and her father have been estranged since her mother died. Nick invites Carter to dig on his mountain, but never expected to fall in love with her. He worries what will happen when she learns the truth that he manipulated the situation as a business venture, but not as much as the concern he feels for her safety when a rival abducts her.

Solving an eighteenth century mystery using modern day archeological techniques is fun to follow and the varying relationships are all delightful to observes. However, an extra intrigue caused by a lunatic peer and Carter's misunderstanding of her parents' relationship seems unnecessary and contrived. Still Carter and Nick are a pleasant duo and his nephew, Carter's partner and his daughter make for a wonderful contemporary romance that will leave readers appreciating Jessica Bird's talent.

Science fiction fans, don't be fooled by the cover suggesting a regency romance. Readers of Sharon Shinn's Archangel series will recall how she can craft an interesting, well-paced story that blends romance and science fiction.

In the world of Heart of Gold, two major races vie for dominance: the matriarchal indigo and the patriarchal gulden. For centuries they have lived separate lives, but times are changing. More young indigo men attend college before marrying, more young people are moving to the city and meeting others of different races, and strict Apartheid-type laws have been lifted. Kit is a high caste indigo woman who was raised in the gulden society by her eccentric, anthropologist father. Nolan is an indigo man who's been allowed to pursue advanced science studies and work at the esteemed Biolab for a few years. He's developed two drugs that have saved gulden lives from fatal diseases, although his accomplishments aren't appreciated by his family. Nolan, Kit, and their companions are dragged into a flash point political situation, complicated by Kit's love for a young gulden leader who may or may not be responsible for recent terrorist acts.

For romance readers, Heart of Gold may provide an introduction to science fiction elements such as social speculation, gender, and technological innovation. For science fiction readers, it provides a fast-moving tale that addresses topics relevant to our time: race, ethnicity, gender, discrimination, family ties, and that ubiquitous truth: "The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of." --Bonnie Bouman

Book Description

A scientist by nature and a rebel at heart are brought together by a strictly forbidden desire--for justice, for equality, and for each other.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing premise and world, but the ending needs a lot of work.......2007-08-07

I was fairly surprised by "Heart of Gold" for a number of reasons. For one thing, I had been informed by another review that it was a Romeo and Juliet story-which is incorrect.

Our story takes place on a continent on which three separate races reside. There are the Indigo, the most powerful and populous race. The Indigo are a matriarchal society who live mostly in what they call "in-country" and yes, they are actually blue. Men are subjugated, though not to a terrible degree, but a working man is unusual.

Then there are the Gulden. The Gulden have been forced by the Indigo to the western most edge of the continent. They are an extremely patriarchal society in which honor killings are acceptable and you are not considered human until you're 12 years old. And yes, they're actually gold.

Then there are the albinos, who don't have anything to do with the story.

Anyway, the Gulden and Indigo have major conflict because of the expansion and colonialism of the Indigo people. To combat this, the gulden have started terrorist attacks in the city (supposedly the only city there is, no map is provided.) One of our main characters, Kit, is the daughter and granddaughter of two gulden anthropologists and the lover of the main gulden terrorist, who is the son of the king. She doesn't approve, but hey, she's in love.

And then there's Nolan, an indigo biotech worker who discovers drugs to combat gulden diseases. He's slated to marry an indigo heiress, move back "in-country" and spend the rest of his life being a husband and father. And then he learns something he really shouldn't know......

These two strangers are forced together by circumstance to try, if they can, to keep the two cultures from exploding into an all out race war.

It's not a bad book; in fact "Heart of Gold" is pretty intriguing. But the ending is just, well.....there should have been another hundred pages tacked on.

Three stars.

3 out of 5 stars This book is too short.......2007-04-08

I finished this story mostly with a feeling of regret. Sharon Shinn is a talented author and does a wonderful job of tackling a number of difficult topics but she doesn't have enough time to really finish off the disparate threads of her story in a satisfying way.

The heart of the story is about race relations between two different races of people that apparently started from the same stock but diverged radically at some point in the distant past. It would have been nice if the author could have gone into some depth on the issue to provide some background and give us some context in which to view the rest of the story. Perhaps this is intentional because the book is obviously motivated by current race-relations situation in America.

The story takes place primarily in a city but the book offers no explanation of how the city was built, why it exists, or whether the city existed before the two races started trying to talk to each other again. Again, Ms. Shinn is attempting to tell so much story that she doesn't have time for the most elementary explanations of what's going on or why.

The Indigoes, the dominant race on the planet, have lots of large plantations and many of the characters in the story come from that background but very little time is given to exploring life on the plantations. Gold society is given better treatment because the heroes have to go to Gold country as part of the plot. The Whites, a third race, are given virtually no time in the book and it might have been better to just cut them out rather than have them stand out as a major unfinished part of the story.

The author makes it quite obvious that the story takes place on a different world, probably set in the future. Is there interstellar commerce? If not, why not? If so, then why does the planet feel so isolated? Why are the Indigoes astonished to discover that the Golds have trade relations with many other species?

On the plus side, the author does a good job of making all of the characters interesting and well-rounded. She does an excellent job, with very limited space, of explaining the differences between the social rules of the two societies and explaining that both are viable organizations even though they are radically different.

The plot that takes over the second half of the book is reasonably well done although it also feels pinch of not having enough explanation to put it into context. The love story that develops at the end of the story is uncomfortably weak because the author just doesn't have enough time to let it blossom naturally.

The publishers should either have let Ms. Shinn write a trilogy (my preferred solution) or they should have handed the project over to somebody like C.J. Cherryh, who has the unique gift for compressing large background explanations into a few well-chosen paragraphs. But I admit that C.J. could never have written such well-rounded, interesting, and likeable characters in the space alloted.

The best analogy I can offer for this book is of an unfinished painting. What's there is very nice but it could obviously have been so much better.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Angelica Series.......2005-08-16

First I must state that I love Sharon Shinn's writing. I read every one of her Archangel series plus Mystic Rider and Summers at Castle Auburn and was mesmerized by her writing. Her attention to detail, her character development, plots are excellent. I can't think of another author who writes such hauntingly beutiful books.
That being said, I just felt this book was shallow and the subject matter too sci-fi and far less romatic than her other books. I look forward to sequels of Mystic Rider, but I am hesitant to try some of her others after this.

3 out of 5 stars Blue-Gold Racial Issues.......2005-04-08

HEART OF GOLD is Sharon Shinn's very obvious attempt to make socio-political commentary about the racial clashes in our society. However, her book is set on some other world where blue people, "Indigos", are the bigots that hold all the cards, and the "Gulden", yellow-skinned people, are the downtrodden race exploited by them. There are also some Albino people who are only mentioned in passing. On the cover, this is marketed as a love story, so I was eager to read it because I loved her angel books and Jenna Starborn. However, this book started very slowly and I found it very hard to "get into it". It has Shinn's typically thorough character development (perhaps hurt a little bit by preachiness), but I never could make myself believe the love connection between Nolan and Kit.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!.......2004-12-08

Well, I love this book!

I must admit Heart of Gold started out a bit slower than I generally like, but as the story unraveled I found myself becoming more and more drawn into it. I read for one day strait to finish the book. I love the ending, 'cause it left me feeling completely satisfied. She wove the love story beautifully, without any unneeded mush.

What can I say, Sharon Shinn is an amazing writer!!

    5 out of 5 stars Domestic Disturbances.......2007-09-07

Bitter Gold Hearts (1988) is the second fantasy novel in the Garrett Files series, following Sweet Silver Blues. In the previous volume, Garrett freed Kayean Kronk from the vampire nest. Afterward, he helped deliver a shapeshifting spy to the authorities. Then he filed his report and escorted Kayean to the Tate compound, where she became an honored guest.

After the probate paid his fee, Garrett bought the Dead Man's house and refurbished it as his home and office. He left the Dead Man in the newly refurnished parlor. When the Loghyr woke up, the news that Garrett was his new landlord left him speechless.

In this novel, the Dead Man is working on the tactics of Glory Mooncalled in the Cantard. He has bugs moving around on the wall map in the pattern of past campaigns. The grumblings and mutterings are trying Garrett's patience.

Garrett had been drinking heavily the night before, so the pounding on the door aggravates his hangover. Some lackeys in the colors of Stormwarden Raver Styx are hanging around outside guarding a half-fairy named Amirantha Crest. She has come down from the Hill to offer him one hundred gold marks to accompany her to the Stormwarden's residence.

After some typical verbiage to establish his importance, Garrett collects the money and then goes back with her to the household. The Stormwarden's secretary -- Domina Willa Dount -- wants Garrett's advice on the kidnapping of the Stormwarden's son. The Stormwarden is in the Cantard and her secretary would prefer that her son is released before she returns. Willa Dount describes the circumstances and shows him the ransom note. He provides her some useful tips and concurs in her thinking on the matter.

The Stormwarden's consort interrupts their discussion and Willa Dount handily brings him to heel. Then she dismisses Garrett, explaining that his very presence would be enough to warn the kidnappers to stick to the rules. As he leaves, Amirantha intercepts him in the hallway and asks about the interview, then she makes a date to meet him at the Iron Liar. Garrett notices a black-haired looker in the hallway -- she also notices him -- and learns that she is the Stormwarden's daughter Amber.

In this story, Garrett reports the meeting to the Dead Man, then he leaves for his date with Amirantha. Five ogres try to beat him on the street outside his door, but Garrett manages to get in the first and last licks. He learns more about Amirantha and the household during dinner. Afterward, Garrett takes her to Morley's place and they discuss the abduction. On the way out, Saucerhead Tharpe invites them sit down and have a beer; although Garrett declines, he tells Amirantha that she should hire Saucerhead if she needs any protection.

The Stormwarden's son returns home unharmed, but Amirantha disappears. Later, Saucerhead Tharpe staggers into TunFaire and admits himself to Bledsoe Hospital. He has been severely wounded. Garrett and Morley bribe the doctors to treat his wounds. When he regains consciousness, they listen to his story.

Ogres had attacked Amirantha at her rendezvous at a rural crossroads. Saucerhead is a big surprise for them, but they take him down anyway from sheer numbers. Yet Saucerhead manages to pick up Amirantha and stagger off to the home of a witch friend. Then he comes back to Bledsoe; he had been born there and figured that he might as well die there.

This story gets rather complicated. Garrett checks out the scene of the ambush and finds Saucerhead's friendly witch. Unhappily, Amirantha is dead, but well preserved. Garrett starts to do some investigating on his own. Other things are happening in addition to the kidnapping and murder.

Morley does Garrett a few favors and then hires out some of his thugs to help the investigation. Morley hates to appear soft, but Saucerhead is a friend, so what is a half-darkelf to do. Then Saucerhead recovers enough to join in the case and the Stormwarden returns to TunFaire.

Highly recommended for Cook fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of political intrigue, magical powers and family affairs.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding paranormal detective story.......2007-05-14

This is a reissue of the long out of print second book in the series. I hope that this reissue does not mark the end of the series.

Garrett is hired by a storm warden's secretary (the storm warden is a powerful sorceress) to advise her on ransoming the storm warden's son before she gets back from the war. But the whole thing seems rather fishy from the get go as you would normally hire someone like Garrett for the whole operation not just for some advice and appearances. This is where the plot gets involved and interesting with various bad guys trying to out smart each other. Good characters some humor and a very good plot overall. The one rough spot is what happens to the ransom. We are talking about a total of 8,000 lbs of gold here and that doesn't get moved fast or easily without a crew or magic.

    Overall an outstanding read though.
BTW I notice that there are none of the editorial flaws that seem to be cropping up in books recently.

5 out of 5 stars "Can you stop gaping long enough to let me in?".......2006-09-10

Stormwardens are the battle mages of Glen Cook's fantasy world of Karenta. They are the deadliest citizens of Tun Faire and exactly the kind of people Garret doesn't want to work for. First of all, he would probably have to work hard for his money, and if he got it wrong that would be too high a percentage chance that he might finish his life as a frog. But Garret is a sucker for a beautiful woman and Amarinda Crest, a half-elf and gorgeous, is the bait on Stormwarden Raver Styx's hook. The result is Garrett in trouble again.

First Styx's son disappears, then he reappears but Amarinda is gone. And Styx's secretary is a genius at stonewalls and dirty tricks, who has eyes only for the Stormwarden's husband. And there's a daughter, a mistress, and just a few dozen trolls. This story has more rotten characters than a hive has bees, even if you are only counting the good guys. And there aren't too many of them. From the moment Garrett gives Amarinda his first long and loving glance he is in deep water.

Glen Cook continues to write what is one of the better 'fixer' series in the market, pitching Garrett and the Dead Man into a plot that makes noir detective stories look like self-help books. This is a dark story, one where there aren't any 'good,' just shades of bad and ugly. But Garrett endures the snipes of the Dead Man and his cohort in crime, Morley Dotes, while delivering a few of his own, and this provides a lot of the charm of the story -- the underlying relationships that give the tale its underlying humor and keep the reader comfortable and interested.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good 2nd in the Garrett Series.......2005-10-31

This is the 2nd in Cook's Garrett series ("Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," "Cold Copper Tears," "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," "Red Iron Nights," "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat," "Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols").

BTW: At the time of this review, this book is long out of print. It's tough to find anywhere. As an alternative, look around for the SFBC's "The Garrett Files." This book is part of that collection.

5 out of 5 stars bitter, but good.......2001-12-18

I've liked all the Garrett novels, but this is my favorite. It's got everything a good, hardboiled detective novel should without succumbing to boilerplate and an ending as bitter as day-old coffee. Cook is always a writer worth reading, but here he goes beyond himself.
