Vagabond, the second entry in Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest series, has been eagerly anticipated by those who read the first book, and it doesn't disappoint. Thomas has managed to survive the battle of Crécy. Still nursing his wounds, he is dispatched by the king on a mission to look into the matter of his father's inheritance, which is obscurely connected to the Holy Grail. This most precious relic of the Christian faith is a much sought-after object, offering the power of total victory in war to its owner. But Thomas finds himself in the middle of a battle against an army invading the North of England, and other shadowy forces pursuing the grail are prepared to slaughter anyone who stands in their way. In the ruins of his birthplace, Thomas discovers more about his father, and a dangerous voyage to France brings him up against his cousin and arch-enemy, Count of Astarc Guy Vexville. The stage is set for a merciless showdown.
Thomas is a protagonist drawn quite as pithily as his much-loved predecessor, and the sheer verve of Cornwell's storytelling here is irresistible. We are plunged into a distant age: bloody, colourful and dangerous. Roll on, volume three! --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
From internationally bestselling author Bernard Cornwell comes the eagerly anticipated sequel in his acclaimed Grail Quest series, in which a young archer sets out to avenge his family's honor on the battlefields of the Hundred Years' War and winds up on a quest for the Holy Grail.
1347: a year of war and unrest. England's army is fighting in France, and its absence encourages the Scots to invade the old enemy. Thomas of Hookton, sent back to England to follow an ancient trail that suggests his family once owned the Holy Grail, instead becomes embroiled in the savage fight when the Scots come to Durham. Out of the horror he finds a new companion for the quest but also discovers a new and sinister enemy in a Dominican Inquisitor.
All Europe wants the grail. Many may doubt it even exists, but no one would willingly allow an enemy to find Christendom's most precious relic, and Thomas finds himself in a murderous race with the Inquisitor and with Guy de Vexille, the mysterious black rider who murdered Thomas's father (in The Archer's Tale).
Thomas appears to have an advantage in the race. His father bequeathed him a mysterious notebook that confirms the grail's existence and offers clues to where the relic might be hidden. But his rivals, inspired by a fanatical religious fervor, have their own advantage—the torture chamber of the Inquisition. Thomas, seeking help to decipher the book's cryptic pages, is delivered instead to his worst enemies.
He finds refuge in Brittany, with Jeanette, the Countess of Armorica, but fate will not let him rest. He is thrust into one of the bloodiest and most desperate fights of the Hundred Years' War, the Battle of la Roche-Derrien, and amid the flames, arrows, and butchery of that night, he faces his enemies again.

In Best Evidence, Michael Schmicker assembles scientific documentation for experiences that many readers intuitively believe are real, despite mainstream skepticism: ESP, psychokinesis, mental healing, ghosts and poltergeists, dowsing, mediums, near-death experiences, reincarnation, and, as Schmicker puts it, "Other Impossible Phenomena That Refuse to Disappear." Expect a credible collection of convincing evidence, such as a published report in the American Journal of Diseases of Children in which a Seattle doctor offers a detailed account of a near-death experience. Or a 1995 report from the CIA on the practice of remote viewing, in which the U.S. government hired psychics to spy on other countries. Other evidence is presented to convince readers of death-bed visions, ghosts and poltergeists, and reincarnation. While anyone can manipulate data to draw their own conclusions, Schmicker's evenhanded, journalistic tone brings credibility and a no-nonsense tone to these esoteric discussions. He also possesses a smooth, accessible writing style that makes it easy to digest the research, studies, and data that his book is based upon. After each chapter, he offers a "Highly Recommended Reading" list so readers can continue their own research. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
A national Gallup Poll found 93 percent of Americans believe in one or more paranormal phenomena that Science can’t explain and won’t accept. Veteran journalist and business writer Michael Schmicker tracked down the best scientific evidence for these phenomena which refuse to disappear. No National Enquirer nonsense here. Schmicker puzzled over statistics-stuffed psychokinesis studies from Princeton University and reincarnation research from University of Virginia; reviewed over 140 books from the 1894 classic ghost study Phantasms of the Living to a 1999 study of near death and out-of-body experiences by the blind, Mindsight; searched through professional journals and papers presented to the Parapsychological Assn. (affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science); discovered surprising endorsements of psychic research from Freud and Jung, Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle and Apollo astronaut Edgar Mitchell; tracked fiery academic debates on the Internet; exchanged email with poltergeist hunters; and even spent an evening at a mind-bending, spoon-bending PK party in Nevada. Michael Schmicker edits a high-technology industry newsletter covering developments in biotechnology, astronomy, computer software and ocean/earth sciences industries. An associate member of the Society for Scientific Exploration, he wrote Yahoo Internet Life Magazine’s guide to the best websites dedicated to “Paranormal Phenomena.”

Hello? Is there Anyone Home?.......2005-06-15
I agree with the reviewer who says that "if you believe in psi then this is a good book."
The problem is that there is not one scrap of evidence in favor of psi phenomena -it's not real. Like God.
Poorly Written.......2005-05-25
In short this book is poorly written. The author does not know how to tell a story or draw a reader in except in the title "Best Evidence." He skims through the relevant topics as if he a student trying to fill his word quota. I suggest sticking to Dean Radin's book The Conscious Universe. PS Why does the authors name appear at the top of every page?
Good, yes, but..........2003-11-01
I found the book an excellent read; I am a recent PSI junkie. This is my 4th or 5th book on the subject. Although I agree it is well-done, I recommend Dean Radin's book as a better, and more credible introduction.
Still 5 stars as I appreciate the entertaining writing.

FIRST HE GIVES US INFO ON ALL THE BELIEVERS OUT THERE. This list is sprinkled with many of the top scientists and world renown people of the last 2 centuries. So much for being a minority of odd balls.
THEN HE GIVES US NUTS AND BOLTS FACTS ON STUDIES DONE ON EACH TYPE OF PHENOMENA. Here is a fact-finders dream. This book references hundreds of sources of information on this phenomena. From the fringes to highly regarded institutions. When you read this, you will be astounded at the level of information provided. You could spend a lifetime reviewing all the references here. This book is a keeper once read for just this alone.
IF YOU ARE OF THE SCIENTIFIC MIND, this book gives you enough information to launch your own investigation into these recorded documentations of this phenomena. Let's face it, if we can use statistics to prove quality levels, prove scientific theorems we can also use it in Psi phenomena. This books points you to studies where scientists did just that. Excellent book. I'm going to dog-ear it for the references for sure.

Disappointed.......2007-07-15
I ordered the Gift of the Red Bird by Paula D'Arcy. The book was mailed on June 13, 2007 via US Postal Service. Unfortunately the item has yet to arrive. I have a tracking number but no way of contacting Amazon.
spiritual insight.......2007-03-08
This book was exactly what I had hoped for in that it was an individual description of a personal spirtual quest and the finding of the divine on this earth. A very uplifting, down-to-earth story that reads amazingly quickly
Gift of the Red Bird.......2006-08-13
Very inspirational. I was totally filled with the Holy Spirit. I think I would like to go on a retreat like that. We have so much to learn. Please try it.
Short but beautiful book . . ........2006-04-21
Gift of the Red Bird, a Spiritual Encounter, reads like a journal from Paula D'Arcy's life. On August 18, 1975, on a return trip home to Connecticut, Paula's car was struck by a drunk motorist. Her daughter, Sarah, died of head injuries on August 20, and her husband died three days later from a ruptured spleen. Paula was alive and three months pregnant with her second baby daughter, Beth. For this reason, she went on living.
Gift of the Red Bird tells of a story of extreme loss and ache, of searching for answers, of making sense out of the pain, and of looking for some light in the darkness.
This is Paula's journey, and when she goes on a wilderness retreat -- where it's just her, God, and nature -- she begins to get some comfort for her wounds.
A deeply moving narrative, this book may be short, but the message is deep and lasting. It's a journey well worth taking for anyone who has ever had a tragedy hit their lives where they've had the same questions.
Gift of th Red Bird.......2006-03-19
A very good book. It was an excellent testamonial. It is well written. I plan to use it to finish our year end Bible Study/

Beautifully illustrated catalog.......2003-02-16
This exhibition catalog is beautifully illustrated, with many of the photographs extremely clear and all of very high quality. Most inscriptions are readable; larger objects are not just shown whole, but also in detail. It is a pleasure to see some many objects from Tanis included - King Tut has been over-exposed and the Tanis objects are less well-known.
The introductory essays provide useful background information; the catalog item descriptions are useful but of varying depth.
Great companion to a wonderful exhibit.......2002-09-16
The Quest for Immortality now at the National Gallery in Washington, DC is an eye-popping collection of famous items and unseen wonders from Cairo's Egyptian Museum. With the images fresh in your mind of the originals use the catalog articles to expand your knowledge of Queen Ahhotep and her jewels or the beauty of Nakhtmin's wife.
Don't miss my favorites the charming Ptolemaic bronze cat votive and the lapis lazuli Goddess Maat from the Third Intermediate Period.

Today, many people take for granted the idea that a stopped heart can be restarted, that a person who appears dead isn't really dead until all life-saving techniques have been attempted. But just a few centuries ago, dead was dead. The Amsterdam Rescue Society, formed in 1767, was the first dedicated to the idea that someone who appeared dead--drowning victims, in this case--could and should be revived. Life in the Balance looks at the colorful history of resuscitation from biblical times to the present, and shows just how recent today's life-saving techniques, and the will to save lives at all, really are.
Book Description
Sudden deaths are perhaps the hardest to accept. The heart attack that strikes without warning; the accident that takes away a loved one in the prime of life. But now, for the first time in human history, we have the ability to reverse sudden death. In communities and emergency rooms around the country, men, women, and children who almost certainly would have died 100 or even 50 years ago today survive thanks to the miracle of cardiac resuscitation. But while television shows such as ER. or Rescue 911 have made even the direst medical emergencies seem all too familiar--the wailing sirens, the arrival of paramedics, the initiation of CPR--few of us know of the decades and centuries of effort behind every successful resuscitation. Life in the Balance is the riveting story of the ongoing quest to reverse sudden death. Written by Mickey S. Eisenberg, M.D., Director of Emergency Medicine Service at the University of Washington Medical Center, it is infused with a dedicated doctors passion for saving lives. Eschewing medical jargon, Eisenberg takes us on a fascinating journey of discovery that ranges from biblical times to a real life, minute-by-minute resuscitation in suburban King County, Washington. The journey begins with a grief-stricken mother who brings her lifeless child before the prophet Elijah, and continues with, among others, a physician to gladiators, a Danish masseur, a Baltimore fire chief, smooth-talking medical quacks, and a crusty cardiologist. This wildly improbable but true tale includes magnets, bellows, rectal tobacco smoke, frog legs, executed criminals, bells attached to coffins, reanimation chairs, a long car ride from Kansas City to Baltimore, a serendipitous dog experiment, and a one-story hospital in Belfast. Eisenberg recreates the thrilling breakthroughs in our understanding of respiration, circulation, defibrillation, and the need for mobile emergency medical services, and confronts the limits of modern medicine. He reveals that just as critical as the ability to resuscitate is the will to resuscitate--inconceivable before the Enlightenment, when reversing sudden death would have been viewed as tampering with divine will, and still a source of painful dilemmas today in cases of brain damage or serious illness. A first-class medical detective story, Life in the Balance is supplemented with a straightforward, easy-to-use guide to emergency CPR, a handy glossary of relevant medical terms, and a potentially life-saving Community Survival Checklist. It is must reading not only for health care and emergency medicine practitioners, but for everyone whose life has been touched by the modern-day miracle of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent history of resuscitation.......2003-08-04
This book is an excellent resource for those interested in resuscitation. It's a must-read for ACLS or BCLS practitioners. Eisenberg, himself a nationally-known expert in the field of prehospital care and layperson CPR, takes us on a tour of efforts of resusucation over history, some of them useful, some of them bizarre, but all of them by people who helped us learn what we know of the science of resuscitation today.
jousting at windmills.......1999-12-06
The case for reversing sudden death is anything but secure and proven. Recent works such as that of Stefan Timmermanns cast aspersions on CPR and ACLS on logistical and clinical grounds. The Eisenberg book is the essential first step one undergoes when entering into a very real controversy. It is a standard one uses to measure growing evidence from Delaware and Ontario not to mention rural Kansas that much of our time honored dogmas are no longer sacrosanct. The quest goes on for now, but maybe not forever.
Elegant and fascinating history.......1999-03-18
This is an extremely interesting and well-written book. I picked it up because I love medical case histories, doctor or nurse biographies, or anything of that nature. This book is a lively overview of resuscitation through the ages. Who knew that artificial respiration used to involve fireplace bellows, with the modern method not making an appearance until the 1960's? Ties together the contributions of many far-flung individuals as well as the historical contexts which shaped them. I love a great find like this!

Newby shows how to emerge from crisis spiritually stronger........1998-05-07
James Newby has written a deeply personal guide to how to emerge from a time of personal crisis, which he aptly calls chaos, spiritually stronger. He shows us how a time of chaos can open us to greater spirituality, thus helping us to make a new order in our lives. This book is an eminently practical guide for those who have faced chaos, who are facing chaos, or who will face chaos -- and that includes almost everyone.

Deeper insight into the process of life And death.......1999-08-21
In a culture that is so death defying, this book offers a beautiful, poetic view of the realms that our very conciousness greets as the physical self ceases in its existence. Living in such a linear culture, this book gives a glimpse into the reality of life's cycle- which includes our own death. I have loaned this book to many, many friends, and all have come away with greater awareness and a calm in which to truly find joy in this life.
Product Description
A unique and heart wrenching account of a hero's experience in the Vietnam War and the painful transition of U.S. Veterans returning home. Written by combat Reconnaissance Platoon Leader 1st Lt. Lee Alley, a true patriot and living legend, the purpose of this book is to aid veterans of any war and their families in regaining a sense of comfort and relief from the nightmarish memories of the tragedies of war.
Customer Reviews:
Personal testimonies are penetrating in their honesty.......2007-06-19
I have read almost all the Vietnam books, even authored one myself. Gun Totin' Chaplain However, this book is unique for its personal testimonies. I can just imagine the tenacity expended in collecting them. Great kudos to the author. Most of us Vietnam combat vets have similar experiences and we all have our war stories. For a long time, nobody wanted to hear them. They now do. And, if as Vietnam vets, we have any legacy, it is the fact that we have paved the way for present day warriors. They will not have to be so shabbily treated as us because most Americans who care don't want it to happen again. For this we can be proud. Back From War is a classic. Recently, a psychologist, working with returning Iraq combat vets wanted to discuss Vietnam and Iraq. I immediately suggested she order Back From War. The testimonies are textbooks. I appereciate more than I can convey the immense effort that then Lieutenant Alley made in giving us this book. I will cherish mine given to me by a frined. I would have been honored to serve with Lt. Alley and his platoon and those who've written these incredibly useful testimonies.
A Must Read for Every American.......2007-04-27
I am the wife of a veteran. This book opened my eyes about the emotions by husband has fought so hard to supress. We have been married for 36 years, and until he wrote this book, I never know the pain he carried.
This should be given to every veteran of every war, and every person who knows a veteran should read it.
Back from War: A Quest for life after Death.......2007-02-16
The book offers a first-hand account from Lee Alley and his men about the war and how it has affected them since. After reading the book, I decided to use the book as a basis for my high school students' study of Vietnam and as a means of working within the schools content reading goal. The results were powerful. The kids were totally engrossed in Lee's book. There were times when their scheduled reading time was up and they would beg me to let them keep reading!" Lee is a moving storyteller and the kids hung on every word."
The written histories and reactions really demonstrated the impact of the book and summed up its value in helping kids (and anyone for that matter) understand the Vietnam war and why we must care about those who have worn a soldier's uniform, regardless of the conflict. One student wrote, "I had always thought that most if not all men in war only cared about their own lives until I met and read about Lee. I have always thought of war as fighting and killing, but the real war is with us everyday and the decisions we make. I thank Lee for teaching me these life lessons."
Another student added "I guess you never know how someone is going to act when they come back from war because its one of those gray areas you never get to hear about in school but I look at veterans a different way now because of what Lee went through. The real hero is made when the soldier returns from war and tries to become a better person. Lee is that hero and not only that but a role model for people around the nation."
And finally, another student summed up the importance of the activity. "Although Vietnam wasn't the noblest endeavor in American history, it wasn't the worst, even though it is often portrayed as such. These men defended freedom...and that is why we must learn about it, and the sacrifices they made, or we can never truly appreciate what they did."
A great read for anyone.
An Uplifting and Helpful book about Healing for all Veterans and their Families!.......2007-01-17
This book isn't entirely about Lee Alley and his Vietnam experiences, but it easily could of been. His experiences of Nam are no different then the countless other experiences that have been shared over the years. However, what makes this book such an interesting, helpful and uplifting read is the other stories. The stories about the families trying to heal, looking for any information about their lost loved ones. The stories about the Veterans struggling with the loss of their comrades and the continual nightmares they carry around as never easy to lose luggage. The book is filled with stories of hope and how some vererans eventually find some piece of mind.
The last part of the book is filled with resource information for Veterans. How to file a VA claim, where to go to find information on line, a list of do's & don'ts for returning Veterans, even a SOP for setting up reunions.
This is a book that should be given to every service man and woman, along with their DD-214. If you know of any Veteran from any war struggling with the transition back to civilian life, get this book for them!
Welcome Home.......2006-10-04
I am not a combat veteran, but I found that this book helped me understand some of the emotions of my friends and family members who have defended our country in combat.
My father died when I was young and I was never able to discuss WWII with him. I am finally able to understand some of his pain and the wounds that will never heal for any of our brave combat veterans.
I also think that all who read this book will know that we can never treat our combat veterans with anything but respect and thanks to all of them for their service.
Thank you Lt Alley for helping us all and Welcome Home.

Customer Reviews:
satire this?.......2000-11-09
When I was a lad of some 12 years of age, I enjoyed this and all the others in the series. Now, after reading much science fiction, I am bored to tears. Satire is wonderful only when it serves a point and this does not. The first couple of books were and still are enjoyable. However, when we reach this book I fear it has degraded into a bloated work that goes no where. We've already seen countless times that psych is evil, sex is perverted, and countless other replayed points. I reread up to this book and just couldn't go on! I suppose if one treats the series as a source of cheap thrills it's not all that bad. I for one would rahter listen to Zappa's catalog for some good old satire whit and inteligence.
The Scheme of Sabotage Continues..........2000-06-24
Death Quest continues the exciting tale of the hero Jettero Heller methodically working to save Earth, and his adversary Soltan Gris who seeks to sabotage everything he does. This time Soltan hires a hit man named Torpedo Fiaccolla, a killer so loathsome even the mafia has blacklisted him! He sends his to take out the Countess Krak, Jettero Heller's devoted love. Only the scheme does not turn out as Soltan plans, and everything goes out of control! This book takes the reader violently through the hills of Virginia and then to the open sea and climaxes dramatically in the waterways of Atlantic City. Meanwhile Soltan commits bigamy, and has his plans turned all upside down by a bubble-gum popping teeny-bopper as well as many other outragious exploits involving a pig farm and tons of gold! Death Quest keeps the tale rolling forward and keeps the story alive with wild untamed adventure around every corner. The creative and unusual characters will make you smile and laugh as the story continues to unfold. Hubbard's wit and humor are constantly present in this wonderful satire and science fiction dekalogy. Mission Earth book 6 is great fun! When you make it this far into the series, you will really love this one!
Sci-Fi Satire At It's Best.......2000-06-02
I loved all of these stories. I could not stop once I started them. The pacing is great. The satire is great. Hubbard has a fantastic and witty sense of humor. These stories also really they get you thinking. Love them all.
Tarzan, John Carter...Jettero Heller.......1999-12-26
A new hero of world-saving stature, who is also the best example of human sanity and decency ever in print. The pace of this book is scorching--don't read it late at night if you have to get up early the next day.
The endless series plods on and on and on..........1999-11-18
Other classics of science fiction and satire give us characters that entertain us, delight us, and romance us...the Stainless Steel Rat, Jerry Cornelius and Jherek Carnelian, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Hiro Protagonist and Y.T., and so many others. What do we get with L. Ron Hubbard and book six of this seemingly endless series? We get Teenie Whopper, a genuine underage teenage nymphomaniac who exists solely to have sex with Soltan Gris and provide the reader with some sordid sex fantasies. And that's the highlight (if you could call it that) of "Death Quest," as Hubbard drags his subplots across yet another few hundred pages while we wait and wait and wait for something interesting to happen. Soltan Gris hires a hit man to kill Countess Krak (the so-called "quest" of this book), but of course he screws it up; while he does so, Jettero Heller fights back against the plots of J. Walter Madison and his idiotic "Whiz Kid" PR campaign. Oh, and of course we get more Hubbard ranting against psychology and psychiatry, as voiced by Dr. Crobe.
If you've managed to survive the first five books of this series without slipping into a coma, then you might enjoy the sex and occasional violence that permeates this book. Lord knows there's little else to recommend it...but at least we're past the half-way point of the series. Only four more books to go...
