Another excellent manga.......2004-03-30

This is the second in the five-book series, Angelic Layer, and picks up immediate where the first book left off. The Angelic Layer tournament in Kanto continues, presenting Misaki Suzuhara with a series of challenges that test both her ability to control her angel, and her love for her angel. But, along with her cheering friends and strange mentor, there are others watching her back. There's more than one mystery involved here!

This is another excellent manga, every bit as good as Angelic Layer 1, which is saying a lot! I enjoyed the characters and the interesting plot-twists. I must say that you really quickly get drawn into the story, feeling all of the excitement of the tournament. The story is intense, and yet quite fun and friendly, making this a good story for kids as well. As with the book 1, this book is printed so as to be read from back-to-front, right-to-left, in the Japanese style, helping to give the reader the feeling of entering another world. I really enjoyed this book, and found the story to be absolutely enthralling. I highly recommend this book!

I really reccomend the manga book "Angelic Layer"
I am sorry but I am obsessed with anime and manga, especially Anigelic Layer! AHHHH! I wuv it so much! Borders, you will make hundreds of dollars off of me buying your angelic layer and other manga books! seriously. please do not bann me from giving a review because i will never buy from you again if you do!

One of the Best Angelic layers.......2003-04-02

This Angelic layers is one of the funniest and one of the most action-packed Angelic layers. I very Highly reccomend this to anyone, just get the first one along with it though or you may have to read it a few times before you get who everybody is.

Angelic Layer ROCKS! ^^.......2002-11-23

Okay, this anime by CLAMP is closer to Cardcaptor Sakura than to say, X1999. It's pretty light hearted and i would say this is one of my favorite manga series....

Angelic Layer is about an 12 year old girl named Misaki Suzuhara (AKA Misakichii by her friends! ^^) who, after watching a TV commercial of Angelic Layer, wants to play Angelic Layer! She loved seeing how the smaller angel was able to defeat the larger angel, cuz she's not exactly what people would call big for her age. Someone even thought she was 9!Angelic Layer is having to "angel" (like dolls) fight. You use a special thing to communicate with it (Sorry, i don't know what its called.).

In the beginning of Angelic Layer you'll see a newspaper like thing and if you're a CLAMP fan, you'll DEFINITELY recognize alot of the stuff they're talking about! *Grins*

Angelic Layer #2.......2002-10-27

When I first saw this, I was thinking: Oh [shoot], not ANOTHER pokemon! But really, it's much better than that. It has decent artwork, a semi-believeable plotline, good characters, and is funny,too!! The only problems I had with this were: 1. It's a bit unbelieveable that one of the biggest Angelic Layer champions is in preschool. Second grade, I might buy. But PRESCHOOL?!
2.Darn those cliffhanger endings!

Another great Angelic Layer book.......2004-05-10

This is the third in the five-book series, Angelic Layer, and picks up immediate where the second book left off. What a great and exciting series!.......2004-05-13

This is the fourth in the five-book series, Angelic Layer, and picks up immediate where the third book left off (really this is one story, rather than five separate stories). The Angelic Layer tournament in Kanto is into the final round, but Sai "Ice Machine" Jounouchi is working Hikaru's weakness for all she can. Can Misaki pull another rabbit out of the hat? You bet she can!

What a great and exciting series! As with the other books in this series, this one is great, with fast combat, and a wonderful story. You can feel the story roaring towards the finale, but beware, this is another cliffhanger!

Not terrible, but very disappointing........2005-10-17

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Clamp. I've read/seen many of their series and I've loved them all. Unfortunately, I found Angelic Layer to be exteremly disappointing and if I had to choose a least favorite Clamp series, it would have to be Angelic Layer. The biggest problem I had with this manga was the characters. None of the characters struck me as particularly interesting and Angelic Layer is completely devoid of any character developement. Gone is the usual love-triangle angst fest that are practically staples of Clamp series, all the characters in Angelic Layer remain virtually the same. Then, at the end of the series some characters are just randomly coupled together in ways that don't really make sense. The plot is highly predictable and the ending is just downright terrible.

Misaki's mother's reasons for leaving her (which I won't reveal her for spoilers' sake, so don't worry) is way too cheesy. Thank goodness Angelic Layer was only five volumes long. I think I would have given this series up if it were any longer. However, that isn't to say that there isn't anything good about Angelic Layer. Icchan was a wonderful character that I loved to bits. He's actually my favorite Angelic Layer character. There's lots of comical moments in the manga that really make me laugh and as predictable as they were, the battles in this series were fun. The artwork is also fantastic, as to be expected from Clamp, and I like the way they drew the characters all squid-like during certain comedy scenes.

If Angelic Layer was Clamp's first series, I would have given it a higher rating, since it's still a cut above the rest of the crap that's out there. But Clamp is more than capable than producing better series than this, so I have to unfortunately judge it harshly. One other good thing about Angelic Layer is that it's the safest series Clamp has. There is abosuletly nothing objectionable in Angelic Layer at all. So, if you know any little kids that like anime or manga, Angelic Layer would be the perfect series to use to introduce them to Clamp. I've heard that the anime version is better than the manga, and from what little I've seen of the anime, I have actually liked it more, but this manga was just very disappointing. The only reasons why I can see why one would want to read Angelic Layer is if you're either a diehard Clamp fan or a little kid. But if you want something that truly represents Clamp at their best, I recommend reading something like Cardcaptor Sakura or Chobits instead.

Completely adorable.......2005-09-23

I loved the anime series for this as well. The drawing is well done; similar to other CLAMP works and the characters are very much the same from the anime, if you have already watched it. I like the humor of the series and how the main character Misaki is always going, "Eeeks!" And mad scientist Icchan and his "Icchan went boom!" mantra always makes me laugh as well.

A Cute Read.......2005-06-14

I have all five volumes of "Angelic Layer", and I think it's good. Elementary student Misaki Suzuhara discovers the world of Angelic Layer, a popular game where contestants battle their own custom made dolls. Misaki makes her doll designed for speed, and names her Hikaru. Hikaru is small like Misaki, but she wins battles through planning and strategizing, proving that bigger is not always better.

The story was pretty good, if not a little predictable. The characters are ok too, but they are a little stereotyped. The art is cute, and the battle scenes are detailed. If you can, buy the editions without the red Tokyopop symbol on the spine because they have nice color pictures in the front.

One of the biggest attractions for me with this manga was the major crossover with "Chobits". A few characters from "Chobits" appear, like Minoru's sister Kaede.

Overall, this is a cute, fun manga that teaches the value of trying your best. I would mostly recommend it to younger readers, but others can enjoy it as well.

Battle Angels GO!.......2005-04-30

Misako is new to the city and has just found out about Angelic Layer - a game where robotic dolls, controlled by the will and spirit of their owners, fight for fame and glory. She wishes to join in on the sport but it takes money and experience. Misako, like most young twelve-year olds, has little in the way of cash and has no experience with the game at all.
Yet with the help of a slightly-unbalanced scientist and a Angel of her own design she might make it all the way to the finals.
If you are a fan of CLAMP or the Angelic Layer anime you might wish to start collecting this manga.

Even better than the anime.......2004-08-24

I wanted to see Angelic Layer ever since I saw some music videos on the Internet. After watching the fan-subs numerous times I knew I had to have the dvds when they came out. Then I read the manga...

It's hard to believe, but I actually think the manga is better than the anime in this case. In the anime, Misaki is more doubtful and distracted (even during the fights). In the manga, however, she's super-cute all the time, but when she starts a battle that's all her mind is on.

And speaking of battle, I don't think I've seen a manga yet where I liked the fight-sequences quite as much. The back-flipping, cartwheeling, super-graceful movements of the angels on the layer is simply a joy to behold on the printed page.

The dialog of the characters also seems (to me at least) to have more snap to it in the manga than on the show, and Icchan in particular is so incredibly hilarious I couldn't help but laugh out loud many times when reading Angelic Layer. The art style is interesting as well, as the characters are supremely well-defined and well-drawn at dramatic moments but turn into very silly (and very funny) "squid" versions during comedy dialog.

This is one manga that pretty much anyone can read. There's enough action to satisfy the martial-arts lovers, enough cuteness to satisfy a little girl, and none of the sex and violence garbage that could otherwise mar an excellent story.

I can't recommend this Manga highly enough.

Shining to the End.......2006-07-19

A great end to a wonderful series. This book also includes bonus chapters! If you like the series, make sure to check out the anime- it differs slightly, including more characters and some different outcomes.

A nice finale.......2004-05-18

This is the fifth and last book of the five-book series, Angelic Layer, and picks up immediate where the fourth book left off. With the National Championship underway, Hikaru and Misaki are now facing the toughest angels and their Deuses (controllers) in all of Japan. But, leading with her heart, Misaki is certain to overcome all her obstacles, both those in the Angelic Layer and those in her life.

This is the final book in the series, and it tied everything up nicely. This book is fun and exciting, watching Misaki unravel all of the mysteries of her opponents, and overcoming. I liked the story and the fun little eccentricities that separate this sort of book from the normal, run-of-the-mill American cartoon. (You have to see these characters when they get excited!) I found this a fun book, one that you can easily give to the kids in your life. I highly recommend this book!

Clamp-style cuteness.......2003-03-16

Nothing unexpected happens in this one--everone should have figured out who the lady watching from the shadows was, although her reason for hanging in the shadows is a bit insane--she freaks out when she's around people she loves. This is in the Cardcaptor Sakura vein of Clamp work, but lacks the depth & suspense of CCS, likely due to the length of the work. Angelic Layer is fun, like a mini-vacation--I love the mad scientist stuff & he is a pretty mad scientist. The little dolls are cute, the art is CCS Clamp, not Rayearth Clamp & it's worth the read.
