Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2001-01-25

This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

    Book Description

    Michael Chorost became a cyborg on October 1, 2001, the day his new ear was booted up. Born hard of hearing in 1964, he went completely deaf in his thirties. Rather than live in silence, he chose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull to artificially restore his hearing.

    This is the story of Chorost's journey -- from deafness to hearing, from human to cyborg -- and how it transformed him. The melding of silicon and flesh has long been the stuff of science fiction. But as Chorost reveals in this witty, poignant, and illuminating memoir, fantasy is now giving way to reality.

    Chorost found his new body mystifyingly mechanical: kitchen magnets stuck to his head, and he could plug himself directly into a CD player. His hearing was routinely upgraded with new software. All this forced him to confront complex questions about humans in the machine age: When the senses become programmable, can we trust what they tell us about the world? Will cochlear implants destroy the signing deaf community? And above all, are cyborgs still human?

    A brilliant dispatch from the technological frontier, Rebuilt is also an ode to sound. Whether Chorost is adjusting his software in a desperate attempt to make the world sound "right" again, exploring the neurobiology of the ear, or reflecting on the simple pleasure of his mother's voice, he invites us to think about what we hear -- and how we experience the world -- in an altogether new way.

    Brimming with insight and written with dry, self-deprecating humor, this quirky coming-of-age story unveils, in a way no other book has, the magnificent possibilities of a new technological era.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars My Ears Needed This.......2007-03-08

    Excellent book for the hearing impaired and non-impaired alike. Much detail on living and learning to adapt in a hearing world. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars More Human than Human.......2007-02-12

    Though a rabid sci-fi fan most of my life, I didn't become interested in the subject of real world cyborgs until my own precipitous hearing deterioration. Chorost's book is fulfilling on many fronts for me: his firsthand experience and knowledge of cochlear implants (which appear to be in my future); his very human account of his social struggles; and his obvious love and breadth of knowledge of science fiction, to name just a few. To my own surprise, I devoured this book in a few days. One of the most engaging and satisfying reads I have had in years. Chorost, in my opinion is, to quote Dr. Eldon Tyrell (or Rob Zombie, if you prefer): "More human than human" in this work.

    4 out of 5 stars Valuable personal story.......2007-01-12

    Much of the book deals with experiencing deafness and a cochlear implant. These portions I found interesting and informative. Other personal issues were much less interesting to me since they did not seem to illuminate the main point.

    5 out of 5 stars Rebuilt.. review.......2006-06-15

    As a cochlear implantee ( I also have an Bionic Ear from Advanced Bionics) I highly recommend this book for any one with a cochlear implant, any candidate, or just anyone who is interested in how this amazing technology has had impact on those of us that either suddenly or over a period of time, became deaf. Michael combines a lot of technological information, along with the emotional journey we CI users go through. His description of becoming cyborg and what that means describes how technology today can have an effect on humans. M ichael is a brilant writer with an engaging style. At times this is not an 'easy read" because of the many references to technology, and his use of a sophisticated vocabulary.. but over all, it adds to the other books that describe the cochlear implant journey.

    4 out of 5 stars An interesting and unique book.......2005-11-12

    I enjoyed reading this book. It gives a unique insight into what it is like to use a prosthetic sensory device. Chorost has done a great job of describing the odd sound sensations that he experienced as he learned to use the implant. Since he had spent many years hearing with the aid of amplifiers, he can describe the artificial hearing in terms of sounds that a hearing person can relate to.

    His descriptions of how software changes modified his hearing experience are very good. He also did a good job of describing the complex technology of the implant in terms that can be understood by a general audience.

    Some parts of the book where he discusses his social life drift out of relevance for a while. He could have shortened those parts or left some of it out, but it does not spoil the overall quality of the book, which is excellent.

    Book Description

    Becoming a Conflict Competent Leader combines research, conceptual models, practitioner experience, and stories that highlight the core conflict competencies. The book underscores the importance for leaders to develop the critical skills they need to help them, their colleagues, and their organizations deal more effectively with conflict and move their organizations forward.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Behavior is the key.......2007-09-15

    Fair warning to the reader! I work with the Conflict Dynamics Profile 360 assessment (CDP), which is the core of this book's approach to conflict. Having said that, I also want you to know that the reason I work with the CDP is because it provides a research-based behavioral approach to managing conflict.

    The body of work in this book was developed in response to data showing that the most commonly low-rated behavior for people in leadership development programs was conflict management. Often the individual receiving such feedback had no idea what behaviors were leading to those low ratings. Conflict Dynamics clarifies the behaviors that escalate vs those that manage conflict, so that the reader can identify what behaviors to change.

    Whereas other conflict management approaches focus on general styles toward conflict (i.e. competitive, collaborative, etc.) or individual personality differences that lead to conflict (nurturing vs. driving, for example), this book clearly describes behaviors, regardless of styles and individual differences. Filled with well written scenarios depicting the different conflict behaviors - both constructive and destructive - this shows readers how they may contribute to negative conflict situations and - more importantly - how they can move conflict situations to positive issue-focused resolution rather than destructive person-focused escalation.

    No matter how this book is used, the reader will find that it contributes to growth as a leader in the real world.

    4 out of 5 stars Understanding a conflict situation.......2007-09-03

    Conflict is a normal part of relationships, and thus its management is an essential leadership skill. Precipitated by an event and/or hot button, the initiated conflict is either escalated by `destructive' responses or de-escalated by `constructive' responses according to the Dynamic Conflict Model introduced by the authors. A conflict competent leader understands this model and the elements of conflict. By using self-awareness and self-control, and by understanding conflict styles and behaviors, the conflict competent leader is able to make a choice in their responses.

    According to the authors, emotions play a key role in escalating conflict and there are five levels related to conflict situations:
    * Level One: Differences
    * Level Two: Misunderstandings
    * Level Three: Disagreements
    * Level Four: Discord
    * Level Five: Polarization
    One way to lessen emotionally driven destructive responses to conflict is to emphasize a positive emotional tone by managing effectively five core concerns:
    * Appreciation - acknowledging the value of people
    * Affiliation - developing connections with another person
    * Autonomy - respecting the freedom of people to make decisions
    * Status - recognizing the specialty of others
    * Role - making sure that people have a clear, meaningful purpose
    To promote constructive responses to conflict:
    * Stay calm
    * Encourage civility, fairness, and safety
    * Use teaching and coaching
    * Provide learning opportunities
    * Embrace constructive conflict
    The authors end the book by promoting the building of conflict competent organizations, including the adaptation of an Integrated Conflict Management System.

    From an individual conflict management perspective, the book serves as a reasonable `how-to' guide for resolving a specific situation. From an organizational perspective, it misses the importance of building common purpose and shared goals as a performance foundation for conflict avoidance as well as conflict resolution. Dennis DeWilde, author of The Performance Connection

    5 out of 5 stars Superb, Accessible Resource.......2007-07-18

    I have used the materials in this excellent primer to help senior management understand the immense internal and external impacts that unresolved conflict have on their organizations. Identifying how people actually behave during conflicts (and can improve) is a major step forward for creating better workplaces.

    The divisions of behavioral responses and the familiar and enlightening examples used, help everyone learn how to manage their constructive and destructive and active and passive actions. The overall framework serves both diagnostic and monitoring functions for determining what needs to be done to improve workplace dynamics. The inclusion of hot buttons is ingenious as it allows everyone to see their own vulnerable areas and to prepare for more thoughtful responses.

    I'm recommending this superb resource to all my workplace clients. Some have been using the Conflict Dynamics Profiles to help them and their employees learn to discuss and manage the differences that too often lead to unresolved conflicts as well as to poor business practices.

    5 out of 5 stars A conceptually sound and broadly applicable approach to conflict. .......2007-06-19

    Runde and Flanagan present a convincing argument for the benefits of increasing the conflict competency of leaders. They then proceed to describe a research-based approach that allows leaders to increase self awareness and skill in managing conflict. Leaders and aspiring leaders will find the book filled with practical information to support their individual development. They conclude with a description of how leaders can devise an "Integrated Conflict Management System" that has the potential to transform any organization. Becoming a Conflict Competent Leader is a must-read for coaches and OD professionals.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! .......2007-05-13

    Tim Flanagan and Craig Runde have written an outstanding book for anyone who needs to deal with and manage conflict. The extensive research and academic integrity give the book credibility and authenticity. And yet, the book is loaded with both business and personal examples, which give it a "real world" flavor and feel. The section and chapter summaries add to the organization and understanding of key concepts. But, don't just read the summaries. You'll miss out on the entertaining "stories" which the authors relate to this serious topic.

    Book Description

    In this provocative work, Jean Vanier shares his profoundly human vision for creating a common good that radically changes our communities, our relationships, and ourselves. He proposes that by opening ourselves to outsiders, those that we perceive as weak, different, or inferior, we can achieve pure personal and societal freedom.

    Our society shuns weakness and glorifies strength. By embracing weakness, however, we learn new ways of living and discover greater compassion, trust and understanding. This spirit of inclusion has extraordinary implications for the we live our lives and build our communities.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Jean Vanier is a saint.......2007-07-22

    Dear friends, In a country, and where, our thinking ought to be less self-indulgence and more communion with others, "Becoming Human" is a wondeerful and insightful gift on how to heal ourselves so we can see everyone else. I loved this book!

    5 out of 5 stars superb.......2006-05-07

    I was profoundly moved by this book--it is far more insightful, better written, and more sincere than just about any other "spiritual" discourse. Vanier is not someone to promote himself and his ideas. Instead, this short book is straight from the heart of a brilliant man. If only more people read this instead of so much self-indulgent new age literature.

    I cannot recommend this strongly enough.

    3 out of 5 stars Harder than it needs to be.......2005-01-10

    Vanier mixes timeless truth with a dash of storytelling in this quick read, reaching back into his earliest experiences with the mentally disabled for examples on `becoming human.'

    He argues that manifestations of weakness should not be avoided out of ignorance: Now-vigorous people often shun those less fortunate than themselves in the mistaken belief their places will never be reversed. By accepting weakness, however, and by embracing it, such individuals come closer to understanding what it really means to be human.

    This work is based upon a series of talks Vanier gave through CBC radio, as well as several lectures he conducted at the University of Toronto. The resulting notes and transcripts were brought together in a single manuscript, which Vanier did little to edit. Instead, he merely added small blocks of text to ease the transition from one thought to another.

    As a consequence, the book is given to redundancy in areas where the lecture notes and CBC transcripts probably overlap. These raw text dumps are so distracting they detract from the book's message; and the material, though offered up in thematic chapters, doesn't have any real sense of order.

    The author would have done better to rewrite this book based upon his notes, rather than borrowing directly from them. In that way, he could have formed better links between each topic, while at the same time weeding out any glaring repetition.

    4 out of 5 stars Accessible Reflections on Spirituality in Practice.......2004-09-01

    The book entails the material of five talks that its author, Jean Vanier, gave on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio program. Vanier is the founder of "L'Arche," which is an international network in more than 30 countries for people with intellectual disabilities.

    The author comments that the book springs from his experience of humanness and not directly from his life of faith. In this sense the book is more about anthropology than about spirituality. "This book is about the liberation of the human heart from the tentacles of chaos and loneliness," writes its author, "and from those fears that provoke us to exclude and reject others. It is a liberation that opens us up and leads us to the discovery of our common humanity" (5). Among the subjects addressed in the chapters are the following: loneliness, belonging, inclusion, freedom and forgiveness. The author argues that by opening ourselves to outsiders we can achieve true personal and societal freedom, which includes the freedom to become truly human.

    5 out of 5 stars creating a common good.......2004-07-21

    Jean Vanier is my favorite philosopher and spiritual thinker, and although he's a Christian, his teachings have tremendous appeal to people of all religious or non-religious perspectives. What a wonderful, wonderful human being. God bless him! Growing up, I used to eagerly watch Jean Vanier's TV program where he talks about the importance of love and relationship with others, what he calls communion and forming community. And in his sermons he always emphasizes how relationship with a person you care about is more important than material gain. He talks about how materialism satisfies the senses but it leaves an aching emptiness of the soul, which can only be filled by a spiritual relationship with God and an emotional relationship with other people, all based on love. What I love about Vanier's teachings is how he challenges us to open ourselves up to outsiders, especially to those that society sees as weak, different, or inferior, and that by opening up our hearts to them, we can help heal our own inner brokenness as well as theirs. Our world values strength and achievement, but by embracing weakness, we reach a higher inner level of personal compassion and understanding. It's all about learning to accept a person just as he is, rather than shutting oneself off from him simply because he isn't what you expect. It's about unconditional friendship through love, and love through friendship. The people in this world who understand this message and the few who actually live it are truly the blessed of God.

      Book Description

      In a world of swift and sweeping cultural transformations, few have seen changes as rapid and dramatic as those experienced by the Urapmin of Papua New Guinea in the last four decades. A remote people never directly "missionized," the Urapmin began in the 1960s to send young men to study with Baptist missionaries living among neighboring communities. By the late 1970s, the Urapmin had undergone a charismatic revival, abandoning their traditional religion for a Christianity intensely focused on human sinfulness and driven by a constant sense of millennial expectation. Exploring the Christian culture of the Urapmin, Joel Robbins shows how its preoccupations provide keys to understanding the nature of cultural change more generally. In so doing, he offers one of the richest available anthropological accounts of Christianity as a lived religion. Theoretically ambitious and engagingly written, his book opens a unique perspective on a Melanesian society, religious experience, and the very nature of rapid cultural change.

      The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player is another in a long line of titles by John Maxwell aimed at helping people attain their personal and leadership potential in the workplace. The book is organized into short chapters, each devoted to one of the 17 qualities that Maxwell deems essential to a successful and harmonious workplace, qualities such as competence, discipline, adaptability, commitment, selflessness, and preparedness. Maxwell's prose reads like a series of sermons, peppered with inspirational stories and quotes from personalities as diverse as Vince Lombardi ("The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender") and Henry Ford ("Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success"). The book is for Maxwell fans and anyone looking for a sensible and formulaic approach to improving their lot, both at work and in life. --Harry C. Edwards

      5 out of 5 stars Great book to use to facilitate team discussion.......2007-02-19

      I used the 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player as a book to use for team discussions affirming or confirming how the team would operate. The chapters are a quick read and the qualities described supporting a successful and harmonious workplace cover most required behaviors of a good team member.

      While John Maxwell's material is mostly from non-profit experiences, the stories and quotes are relevant and applicable to corporate America just as much as in the non-profit settings. In some cases my team offered criticisms of the examples, but even in those cases the opportunity to have the team discuss and agree on the essential attributes of teamwork was a success I would not have achieved without the support of the book. I have not used the websites referred to in the book.

      This book is very well written. It should be required reading in Organizational Behavior and other Management courses.

      4 out of 5 stars Misleading?.......2005-11-04

      Many books and subjects taught should have a disclaimer stating that the information you are absorbing may not apply to the real world.

      The only way I see the information in this book working is in a small company on its' way up. Im not saying that the information within is alltogether baseless, however, there are more than a few times while reading where I wondered what would be my fate if I had someone with a secretive agenda within my group of subordinates and I began to let down my guard just enough for them to knife me in the back? This book never suggests looking out for oneself. Dont get me wrong, trust is good, but you cannot allowed yourself to be disarmed by it.

      Is the book worthy? ABSOLUTELY. All I am saying is that it should be taken with a grain of salt and not blindly adhered to.

      3 out of 5 stars not so surprising .......2005-04-26

      nothing new , a lot of generalities, i am a bit deceived by the book ...

      4 out of 5 stars Sad but true.......2006-08-23

      It is a sad commentary on the state of gender relations today, and the post-feminist confusion in our society, that there are so many books like this out there for "nice guys" who are always passed over by today's women, for annoying louts... Ask yourself if you would be so desperately courting creatures with such issues, if they were incapable of having sex. Would you even talk to them?

      3 out of 5 stars Good Book But applies mostly to Black Women.......2006-08-12

      Not bad information but the author assumes that all women act the same towards sex. Black women as a group are more open to sex without strings unlike many of the other groups of women out there. They arent afraid or put on phony fronts as other groups of women do. This being said, If your are looking to date Black females, you really dont need a book, just show that you have something on the ball and you shouldnt have any problem.

      5 out of 5 stars Very thorough and interesting read . . . .........2006-02-26

      I'm an author of my own relationships-related book, "Mode One: Let The Women Know What You're REALLY Thinking," and I actually use one or two quotes from Rom Wills' book in my own book.

      "Nice Guys and Players: Becoming The Man Women Want" breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of both the typical "nice guy," and the popular "player" types.

      One of my favorite quotes from this book is, "Women want that feeling of excitement when they deal with a man. Too many men often play it safe because it seems more responsible and they think that's what women want. Women want both responsibility AND excitement." This is SO TRUE.

      One more quote I love, that is also SO TRUE, is when Wills says, "Sex is really the main difference between a 'nice guy' and a 'player.' The most consistent statement by women about the 'nice guys' is that they are not good in bed. If they were good in bed, they wouldn't be nice guys. They would be called Mr. Right."

      In my experience, "player" types are not always more handsome than nice guys, or have more money or better jobs than nice guys, but if there are one or two qualities "players" have that most "nice guys" don't is that 1) "players" are typically way more SELF-CONFIDENT than the average "nice guy" types; 2) "players" know how to arouse & seduce women far more effectively than "nice guy" types.

      I would recommend this book to any single, heterosexual male.

      4 out of 5 stars Where is the real Woman for the real Man?.......2005-08-13

      Rom hits the nail on the head. The question I was left with after reading the book twice is: Do you really want to find some cute shallow, material, vain, empty woman? The reality is we all get older, balder, and fatter. . I am not saying it is better to be alone but while the book is telling you how to be real, it fails to tell you how to find something real which should be the real goal, and few women are really real. Sure walk better, dress better, act better but in the end you need to find something better. Rather than immaculate yourself to get laid. Even the book makes the assertion that most women have questionable sexual past. With all the things going on out there and kids why would you want an attractive or unattractive woman with any questions. So the question that I am left with is why strive to be real when the average woman isn't real or looking for anything real. I think it is a good recipe for divorce when you change your inner core to get some. It is not about wearing a pink shirt and getting a manicure but having a loving supportive woman in your life who understands that the 401K is more important than the car I drive. I liked the book, it is a one day read with information we should all be aware of and sensitive to. I'm still a nice guy, and I have never been a doormat. But then I don't consort with those type of women who would use me - and that's real enough for me.

      3 out of 5 stars A great attempt to bridge the gap.......2005-06-04

      ... between men and women. An admirable task, and an enjoyable read. Runs through entertaining stereotypes taken from another book, made fun and discussed in detail. Unfortunately, a rash dictum on religion and morals towards the end tends to lessen the overall impact of the book. However, it still contains a decent basis for inspiring the genders to become better suited for each other.
