5 out of 5 stars Brian Tracy delivers the cure for fear-driven paralysis.......2007-07-10

When things go sideways, it's common for the human mind to shift to "worst case scenarios." Dwelling on these hypothetical situations generates fear, fear induces paralysis, and the "self-fulfilling prophecy"...dwelling on what you DO NOT WANT instead of facing fear head-on and fighting for what you DO WANT...becomes a reality.

The chapters are "Stay Calm," "Be Confident In Your Abilities," "Dare To Go Forward," "Get The Facts," "Take Control," "Cut Your Losses," "Manage The Crisis," "Communicate Constantly," "Identify Your Constraints," "Unleash Your Creativity," "Focus On Key Result Areas," "Concentrate On Priorities," "Counterattack!," "Generate Cash Flow," "Care For your Customers," "Close More Sales," "Keep Things Simple," "Conserve Your Energy," "Make Your Connection," "Character Is King," and "Put It All Together."

To the reviewer who commented on the size of the book (117 pages), all I can say is that I'd rather have a 117 page book that is focused and filled with usable information than a 300 page book that says nothing and goes nowhere. Look at those chapter titles. You WILL get your money's worth on this one.

This book is targeted toward working men and women with their backs to the wall. The only thing that will turn around a bad situation is calm, consistent, well-planned action. This book provides the framework. You fill in the blanks.

Stop worrying, roll up your sleeves, and get to work. Brian Tracy will coach you out of your fear, but only if you read the book and take the appropriate actions. Don't buy the book, set it on your shelf, and go back to worrying. You will get stronger with every step you take, no matter how small the steps might be. TAKING the steps is the secret.

5 out of 5 stars Some where, some day you will meet your Crunch Point.......2007-05-23

This is one of those books that has a way of finding you when it is needed most. It doesn't matter who you are, how much experience you have or how much success you have gained; sooner or later you are going to have a setback. When you do (or you may be in the middle of a crisis now) you will want this book on your desk. The beauty of Crunch Point is that is doesn't overwhelm you with theory. The ideas are basic and things that you probably already know - the problem is, when you are in a crisis you can't think clearly and often overlook the basics. Brian Tracy teaches you to slow down and think. The good news is that it works and with a clear head you will meet your crunch point head on and emerge a winner. 5 out of 5 stars Crunch Point.......2007-03-08

This was a great book. I used the 21 secrets to succeeding during a "team building" exercise with my group. I had each member use one secret and relate this to their everyday job. Everyone really enjoyed the exercise and I was grateful to have this book as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Simple to the point and pure Brian Tracy.......2007-02-20

Brian's books are to some trivial but after thirty years in big business his books are on the mark and this one is no different. He gives you a step by step guide to dealing with your business or your life. His focus with this book is when things have gone bad and you want to come back and his 21 steps will bring you back ... good work and straight forward. Loved it.

5 out of 5 stars RIGHT ON!.......2007-01-11

Brian's book came at a crucial point in my business when I needed some practical advice, not just more philosophical "business speak". Crunch Point was a great read with applicable information and ideas that will pay dividends for many years to come!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars the most idiotic book in Christendom.......2005-01-18

Having nothing deeper to say than "You should like yourself because it's better than not liking yourself," the author happily inflicts such circular inanities on us as: "You should always try to do the right thing. If you call kids names, start fights, or somehow hurt others, you won't feel good about yourself because you know that you are doing something that is wrong."

1 out of 5 stars Not Helpful.......2004-12-22

When I read the first few parts of the book, I thought it would be very helpful. But I was wrong. First off, its very undetailed and doesn't explain much about the process of making friends. Also, its unrealistic, especially for middle schoolers. I say this because they make it sound like: Compliment a person and they'll be your friend. Or: Smile and they will like you. I don't think thats very helpful. It might be okay for very young kids starting one of the lower grades, but definetly not middle schoolers or even some elementary schoolers.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book.......2002-10-21

Shortly after receiving this book, my wife & daughter read it together. At 7 years old and quite shy, she had trouble making friends in 2nd grade.

It's been three weeks since we bought the book, and she still insists on reading it a couple times a week. We believe it gives her confidence to go to school the next morning and interact with her classmates.

My wife insists that our daughter has a new outlook when it comes to school. She has been more playful, and talks more when she comes home. We hope these results continue!

1 out of 5 stars A shallow "How to Win Friends" book inappropriate for kids.......2002-06-01

With an 8-year old son learning how to make friends, and handle new situations at school, I was searching for a book to help him along. This book had suggestions like "smile" and "give people compliments" and I didn't think it was appropriate at all for the issues an 8-year old faces at school. It was way too shallow and didn't address real issues. I did buy another book at the same time from Amazon that was much better - "Good Friends are Hard to Find" and I thought it addressed very specific issues and gave great advice on how to handle each one.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-03-19

It didn't suit the needs of my child at all, but maybe it would help someone else.

Book Description

From Kennedy to Nixon, the FBI unwillingly found itself at the center of the struggle for racial equality and justice. Kenneth O'Reilly tells the shocking story of how political loyalties, priorities, and prejudices turned a government agency into an adversary, instead of a protector, of civil rights.

2 out of 5 stars A whole lotta nothin.......2007-09-04

I bought this book thinking that it would reveal personal secrets and details of prominent blacks like MLK, Malcolm X, etc. This book reiterates the same thing over and over, The FBI was bad, and Hoover was a racist. Too many names and titles were interjected thruought the book. As soon as the author touches on an interesting topic, he leaves it and goes to something else thats very dull. I kept reading, waiting for the good stuff to come. It never came. Don't waste your money on this one, Its boring and dull.

5 out of 5 stars The FBI and the politics of riots.......2007-07-27

This was required reading for a graduate course in American history.

Kenneth O'Reilly's book provides a glimpse into the relationship between President Lyndon B. Johnson, (LBJ), and J. Edgar Hoover, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). O'Reilly examined their relationship through the response that both men exhibited to the urban riots that started in the summer of 1964. O'Reilly stated that LBJ, "turned to the FBI for help in managing the politics of the 1960's riots, not because he thought the FBI could be trusted, but because he thought the FBI could be controlled" (92). The Johnson administration was caught off guard when the riots broke out in northern cities because the administration had been totally fixated on the Jim Crow South. The spark that ignited the chain of rioting took place a little over two weeks after LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The impetus for the riots was the shooting of a fifteen-year-old Negro boy by an off-duty police officer in New York City. Over the next several weeks rioting spread through Brooklyn, Rochester, and then to New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. LBJ saw these riots as a threat to all of the hard work he had accomplished with his Great Society programs. More importantly, O'Reilly's research showed that LBJ saw the riots had the potential to become a serious political threat to his re-election. Both the Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, and the segregationist George Wallace, Governor of Alabama, who was polling well in early Democratic primaries, had argued against passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Great Society. Both men predicted that they would give too much away to people who would just become lawless, lazy, and would not develop any work ethic. As these riots took place, LBJ envisioned votes slipping away from him in the upcoming November election and he knew that he had to act.

LBJ feared that southerners would turn their backs on the Democrats and vote Republican, so he turned to Hoover and the FBI for help, which O'Reilly's research showed to be a monumental mistake. LBJ held a strategy meeting about the riots with Hoover on July 22nd. He told Hoover that he was convinced that Communist agitators and right-wing elements had their hands in these riots, and LBJ asked Hoover to gather and report his findings about the involvement of these subversive elements. LBJ's beliefs about the radical support to the riots were music to Hoover's ears, since he was a rabid anti-Communist. In addition, in a strange twist in politics, LBJ received and used the help of Thomas E. Dewey, the Republican candidate for president in 1944 and 1948. Dewey became fed up with Goldwater's brand of conservatism. LBJ was happy to receive Dewey's help and used Dewey to finalize and draft the report of the FBI's findings, because Dewey still enjoyed the well-deserved reputation as a crime fighter from his days as New York's district attorney in the 1930's. O'Reilly's research showed just how paranoid LBJ was over the riots. During the summer LBJ was making so many phone inquiries, that he had a direct phone line installed into the bedroom of Cartha D. DeLoach, the Assistant Director of the FBI, who was serving as the FBI's liaison to the White House. One of several actions that the FBI took in September at LBJ's behest, was to leak to the media the FBI report that Dewey had drafted, which "was intended to defuse Goldwater's law-and-order politicking and to recapture those lost votes" (94). LBJ was even able to get Hoover, a staunch conservative, to support the War on Poverty in the report. Unexpectedly, Hoover and Dewey were both restrained in the report when it came to placing blame for the riots on Communist or radical agitators. They agreed that the riots were not started by these radical elements, but only received some support from them after they were initiated. This aspect of the report turned out to be quite accurate. The report came as a total surprise to conservatives because it emphasized poverty and discrimination as the causes of the riots, and not race or radical agitators. In addition, in a stunning rebuke to the charges of the Goldwater campaign, the FBI report supported Johnson's Great Society programs as the best response to the riots. The FBI report served the purpose for what LBJ intended. It was not written to stress any public policy, but was effectively used by LBJ to help stymie Goldwater's presidential campaign. The interesting question that O'Reilly answers is "at what price?"

Although LBJ was elated with both Hoover's and the FBI's support, history has proven that Hoover's acquiescence to LBJ would ultimately come at a high price to the Johnson administration, as well as the American people. "Only Hoover had it both ways. He managed to tell the president what he wanted to hear...and also to expand his bureaucracy's surveillance responsibilities" (98). After LBJ's re-election, he was continually plagued with riots across the country, and in response, he turned to the FBI to train local and state police in anti-riot tactics at the FBI academy. Once again, this rebounded to Hoover's advantage in increasing his budget and bureaucracy. During the summer of 1967, over 150 disturbances, from arson and looting to major riots and shootings, broke out in Black neighborhoods across the country. This activity caused conservatives to blame yet again LBJ's Great Society programs as the cause. LBJ's reaction was to press Hoover and his FBI to dig up information on radical elements within the civil rights movement, which again, Hoover was happy to oblige. He demanded an ever-increasing budget to correspond with the increase in responsibility of having to use FBI agents to infiltrate civil rights organizations. Unbeknownst to LBJ, by 1968 Hoover also started to funnel information to the Nixon campaign on radicals within the various civil rights organizations.

Thus, LBJ proved to be another in the long line of presidents who turned to Hoover and the FBI for illegal involvement in domestic political matters. LBJ, the consummate politician of his time, thought he could control Hoover; however, Hoover outmaneuvered him and succeeded in pursuing his own bureaucratic and political agenda. O'Reilly's article serves as one of the many examples why Hoover so skillfully held onto his job for so long.

Recommended reading for anyone interested in American history.

5 out of 5 stars A insight into Cointelpro.......2002-10-10

This books details the relationship of The FBI and its director J. Edgar Hoover with Black America. It is clear from reading this book, that the FBI was the enemy. It only supported Civil Rights because of popular opinion. The FBI investigated the Viola Luizzo and Mississippi murders because whites were murdered and a FBI informant was riding in the car with the murderers of Mrs. Luizzo. This book shows how Hoover used his prestige during the 1960's riots to undermine Lyndon Johnson and help elect Richard Nixon. In addition to the character assination of Dr. King, this book details the harassment of the Black movement in general. The operations against The Black Panther Party are also in this book. This book is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars It's worth the purchase........2000-10-06

To answer the reviewer's question, it's worth the purchase. I read this book when I was a high school student working at a public library. I came across it and read word for word what the author has written. The spearhead of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, were instigators of the civil rights movement, slandering prominent and potent leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X and bringing down the Black Panther's Party.

As I read this book at the bus station, a sister sitting next to me wanted to know what I was reading. I showed her the book title and the author. Her response was, "You can't believe everything the white man says." If she read this book, she would definitely believe what the author says!

1 out of 5 stars Book is renamed for New edition! Grrrr.......2003-03-10

I ordered Secret of Collecting Girls Series books as well as All About Collecting Girls Series Books, both by John Axe... Well, after ordering both of the books, I found out that Secret of.... is just the first edition. It contains info on Ruth Fielding, Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Beverly Gray, Kay Tracey, Penny Parker and I think Cherry Ames. {I say "I think" because the book got returned, but I know it at least goes up to Penny Parker} Problem is, this EXACT SAME INFORMATION is found in All About Collecting... with the addition of three or four other girls' series books. I felt [disappointed] because the two books are obviously just a first edition and a second edition with some added material. I've never heard of a 2nd edition being RENAMED something else, albeit a similar title. So word to the wise. If you don't care about the other series mentioned in All About (Vicki Barr, Connie Blair, & Dana Girls) then get this book and save a few dollars. But do NOT get them both thinking they are "companion" books as inferred on several web sites.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and eye catching.......2001-08-04

John has put together a book packed with information and beautiful pictures. Confused about the various art covers on Girks' series books? Problem solved. John does an excellent job explaining the different covers and each one is illustrated in beautiful color photographs.

Buy it for the information. Share it for the photographs. The pictures alone make this a great book for the coffee table. Even non collectors will enjoy seeing the beautiful dust jackets from the books they enjoyed as children.

Worth so much more than the price. John presents his material in a straight forward easy to understand format. John's book is a must have for serious collectors, but non collectors will enjoy it just as much.

I bought it, and I love it. The only regret I have is I wish I would have bought it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price for the pictures alone.......2001-02-15

The title of this book may mislead some readers to believe that it covers many girls' series books, when in reality it covers only the following: Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Kay Tracey, Beverly Gray, Penny Parker, and Ruth Fielding. (The subtitle of the book indicates that these series are featured, but it is still not necessarily clear that they are the only series in the book.) That being said, this book is clearly a labor of love by a person who knows what he's talking about. There is intelligent discussion on collecting books, cleaning old books, estimating values, and different formats.

And then... the pictures. This book includes full color photographs of all the book covers in their various incarnations. For instance, on one page are placed the FOUR different covers for Nancy Drew's "The Clue of the Broken Locket." It's fun to see how the covers evolved over the years, and the author offers much historical information about the cover artists, the Stratemeyer Syndicate in general, and the various editions in which the books have been offered. The other series mentioned above are treated in a similar manner. Overall this is an attractively designed book that can give pleasure whether you browse leisurely or read closely. Enjoy!

Roby Johnson's "Secret Matters" was originally published in 1990 but has been updated to include new information pertaining to the 21st century. When it first came out it won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Men's Science Fiction and became a bestseller. With its updates it is even more compelling than the original.
Kevin Anderson is finishing his college studies and preparing to leave New York to take a position as an intern to help with the rebuilding of San Francisco after a terrible earthquake wreaked havoc there. Suddenly "the visitors" arrive. They resemble humans and they alight in several different cities around the world, among them San Francisco and prepare to change the world. Kevin's company receives a contract to build a facility in which they are to live and in doing so Kevin becomes involved in a friendship with Bel, one of the visitors. He seems very human but he has strange characteristics and appears, like the others, to be hiding something. Kevin finds himself plagued with questions about Bel and the others but before he can find the answers he is searching for, there is a great deal of political miscommunication and disaster. "The visitors" feel that some of the actions of the United States will have dire consequences on his people and the world they live in but Kevin is the only one who listens to what they have to say and only because he is smitten with Bel. Kevin finds himself on a mission to discover the secrets in order to prevent the genocide of the group as well as the destruction of millions of Americans.
Toby Johnson gives us a view of religion and the world as he feels they should be and he has a great deal to say and does so by using Kevin as a man who is torn by guilt. Kevin had never really thought of himself as gay; school had kept him so busy that he never really thought about his sexuality until he realized that his attraction for Bel was something more than just a friendship in the making. It takes a disaster for Kevin to face himself and as he does, he brings up the questions that so many of us have had during the period of discovering ourselves.
Johnson pulls us into the story by making science fiction appear as the real thing and unlike a lot of fiction, the issues that he presents are very real. "Secret Matter" is fascinating for that reason. Johnson tells us that the things we experience in life are what determine as reality and since we cannot change the past, we must learn to deal with it. What "the visitors" bring is chaos and as Kevin is able to deal with it, so should we be able to deal with in our own lives.

My personal problem with this book is that I cannot relate with the two main characters.
Religion-inspired soul-tearing guilts that torment young innocent Kevin are as far from my background as the blinding perfection of sweet natured, understanding, sincere 'Bel.
It is my problem of course but I also think that such a conflict as Kevin experiences is literarily speaking a little obsolete and perhaps up to date only among the gay youngsters belonging to certain religious communities.

At the same time it is not my wish to underestimate the depth of this book. Mr Johnson, throughout his work, develops a view of the world and of religion as they could and should be and though this makes some paragraphs quite hard to understand at the same time it is absolutely different from the usual new ageish blurb you get from shallow minded so-called thinkers. You may think them objectionable but you cannot discard them as useless.

The book in itself is probably no masterpiece: it is an easy story, neat, consistent, well written, with some nicely done action scenes that betrays a competent writer.

I feel like objectioning about the author's clearly understandable opinion that casual sex is questionable, the real thing being only the one you share with the love of your life... what about those who have not found it yet?

4 out of 5 stars A Deserving Lambda Literary Award Winner.......2003-06-28

Kevin Anderson is moving along through his life, finishing up college, and getting ready to leave New York City for a prestigious internship in San Francisco when issues about his sexual orientation begin to bother him. His roommate, Tim, is gay, but Kevin has been so busy with school that he has purposely not given it much thought. When Tim confronts him, Kevin ends up feeling rather glad they are going different directions upon graduation. Kevin flies out to the West Coast for an internship with a company that is helping to rebuild after a giant earthquake. He couldn't be more excited.

And then the Visitors arrive. A race of oddly human-like space people touch down in several cities around the globe, including San Francisco, and nothing will ever be the same. Everyone around Kevin: his neighbors, his boss, new friends, and coworkers are profoundly affected by these new beings, especially when Kevin's company is given a contract to build a facility for them. By accident Kevin meets up with a Visitor named 'Bel, and their connection blossoms into a friendship. But is 'Bel so alien after all? And what's with the Visitors' periodic changes in skin color? They seem so human, albeit much larger, but they possess some odd characteristics, and they seem to be hiding something. Are they dangerous? What secrets do they carry, and where, exactly, are they from?

Before Kevin can get to the bottom of his questions, political disasters and miscommunications occur, and the Visitors are expelled. 'Bel and his emissaries are very clear that certain actions on the part of the U.S. will have grave consequences upon his people and their world, but no one listens except Kevin, who has fallen for 'Bel. Now the young man is on a mission to unravel the Visitors' secrets in order to prevent the death and destruction of Visitors and millions of Americans.

The secondary characters are critical in wrapping up the story and resolving the mystery of the Visitors. Very quickly the reader feels sympathy for Kevin and his struggle to deal with both his internalized homophobia and the new experiences that confront him. The book is a mystery, a coming out story, a sci-fi adventure, a romance, and an insightful twist on biblical themes and philosophical debates. Secret Matter is an enjoyable read most worthy of the Lambda Literary Award it won...
