Book Description

One out of every two modern marriages ends in divorce, and 75 percent of those divorces are initiated by wives. Author Ashton Applewhite is one of these women, having sued for divorce after enduring an unfulfilling ten-year marriage. Cutting Loose is a wonderfully appealing book for women who want to leave their marriage but fear the consequences.

Shattering the media-generated image of the lonely, deprived and financially strapped divorcee, Applewhite provides a much needed reality check. Cutting Loose introduces 50 women, varying in age, race, class and predicament, who have thrived after initiating their own divorces. Their fears of financial, emotional and romantic ruin were never realized; on the contrary, their lives improved immeasurably, and their self-esteem soared.

Cutting Loose also answers the crucial questions: How do you finally decide to make the big break? What is getting divorced really like? What are the shortcomings of the legal process? What about custody and child support? financial and emotional survival? and how does a woman's self-image change during and after divorce?

5 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight........2007-09-09

As the Bob named in CUTTING LOOSE, who has been in a deeply satisfying relationship with Ashton Applewhite for nearly 15 years, I was startled to learn from these reviews that "the author has not had a decent relationship in her life" and even more so to find out that that "the author is now living her life with her female partner . . . promoting a lesbian lifestyle." It's also noteworthy that two other negative reviews (out of a total of five) come from someone who hasn't read the book and someone who recommends his own competing title. If they'd comment on CUTTING LOOSE without bias, they would acknowledge that the author blames the difficulty of achieving a satisfying and egalitarian marriage not on men, but on a society that values men's and women's experiences very differently.

5 out of 5 stars Much-Needed Encouragement.......2007-07-19

Every woman who has been trapped in a terrible marriage out of guilt and fear, bombarded by all sides with the so-called statistics of divorce damage to society at large, owes it to herself to read this book. After all the dollars and angst I spent deciding to end my marriage, this book gave me the strength and support to finally follow through. I thank the author for helping me get my life back, and making me a stronger, saner parent for my children than I ever was while in the crazy-making hell of my marriage.

5 out of 5 stars Liberation!.......2007-02-28

I had been struggling for almost 6 months with the discovery of my husband's affair when one day I just lost my temper and told him what I really thought and finished with "It's over." Shortly afterwards, I just needed to get the hell out of there, so I got in the car, started to drive, and I waited for the crushing pain to come. But it didn't. Instead I felt...Happy. Relieved. Liberated! Hmmmmm..., I thought, This can't be right?!

I drove to the book store (my favorite refuge), stumbled upon "Cutting Loose," and sat in the book store cafe for 4 hours reading it, nodding my head and feeling the most delicious validation.

My husband was not a bad guy at all, largely a good guy in fact, but he had also been jerking me around profoundly and I was exhausted. And pissed. In that moment I was just DONE.

For any woman who is feeling smothered by marriage and cannot figure out WHY, this book will enlighten you. If the thought of divorce leaves you giddy rather than gobsmacked? This book is for you!! Please note, however, that the legal information and politics are somewhat dated as this book was published in 1997. That said, this book is as relevant now as then - it is FABULOUS -Like a key to a new world!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent -- not to be missed by the divorcing woman.......2007-01-13

When I found this book, I had read so many others since my divorce a year ago -- what I was NOT looking for was yet another book full of anecdotes and others' experiences with 'un-coupling', or about the inspiration of change/divorce/mid-life evolution, etc. Instead, this work is refreshingly frank, research-based information about the realities of women on their own. I felt uplifted by facts and actuality, rather than boosted on the wings of another 'self-help' book. I felt as though this book validated my situation and fueled my aspirations. At the time, I was feeling 'haunted' by the past and daunted by the future as well -- I plan to re-read it very soon -- and pass it along to others.

5 out of 5 stars salvation.......2005-11-22

When my daugher was 15-months old I discovered my husband's secret hobby was maintaining a mistress in an apartment down the road from ours. He found her on a cable tv commercial for Asia Sun escorts. The discovery was shattering and I wanted "out" of the marriage, but in the mid-90s the unanimous voice in popular books on divorce was that divorce devastates children and should be spared at all costs except in circumstances of physical abuse and addiction. In many ways this suited me because I wanted nothing more than to return to my fantasy that we would all live happily everafter, and our daughter could grow up with the privilege of a nuclear family. So I set my mind to forgiving and forgetting.

Over the next four years he grew ever more manipulative, duplicitous, controlling and ultimately abusive. By the time I stumbled across "Cutting Loose" I knew my child and I were in serious trouble. I read the book in secret and kept it burried it beneath my sweaters for two more years until I finally mustered up the guts to file for divorce. He made numerous threats to kill me, and proceeded to slash my clothes, demolish walls and furniture, destroy virtually all my personal property, and spend tens-of-thousands of dollars on legal fees fighting everything, including whether I had "grounds" for a divorce.

Finding this book sooner may have spared me and my child five more years of psychological harm. However, the fact I found it at all is a testament to Ms. Applewhite's courage to go against the popular "family values" of the 90s and to speak up for the women and children who are often actual victims of this, not beneficiaries. I thank her from the bottom of my heart for giving voice to the women whose stories helped me take the ultimate step to file for divorce and suffer the consequences. It was an excruciatingly difficult step to take, but one I believe I will never regret, and my daughter will ultimately benefit from. Also heartfelt thanks to the women interviewed in the book for giving me the strength to join them.

      Book Description

Dumped, jilted, ditched, abandoned, rejected. There are a myriad of words to describe the unceremonious end of a relationship, particularly when initiated by one party. In fact, there are new terms being coined all the time. "Cruised," which applies especially to celebrity dumping, has surfaced only recently and alludes to the letting go of Nicole Kidman by Tom Cruise.

Although breakups—whether celebrity or everyday—are a constant source of fascination, surprisingly little attention has been given to women who are cut loose in their later years. This book addresses that largely unexplored but growing demographic. It is a book about (mostly) long-term relationships that have come apart. Each woman involved, the majority of whom are over sixty, tells her own story through journal entries, essays, poetry, or stories. While the overwhelming sentiments shared by these women are those of grief, loss, emptiness, and depression, there is a double edge to their predicaments. Although in many senses they have been abandoned, they have also been set free, untethered, and for some, liberated sexually, mentally, or emotionally.

The book is divided into two major sections. The pieces in the first part are personal narratives. Among the varied voices, we hear from women in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships who have been left by their partners or who have decided to leave them. In one account, a woman explains why she needed to abandon her thirty-year marriage to save herself. Another woman describes how she has been both left and also done the leaving: "I was dumped, I moved on to dumping, and at the end was dumped again. And then, in a very small way, I dumped my original dumper."

In the second section, the contributors look at being left and leaving from psychological, sociological, economic, sexual, medical, anthropological, and literary perspectives. Other essays explore the shared experiences of specific classes of women, such as single women, widows, or abandoned daughters.

In unflinchingly honest and intelligent prose, the women in this book address the gamut of subjects related to the ending of their long-term relationships. Covering emotions that range from anger and revenge, to the slow and painful process of mourning, to the complicated issues of love and aging, the other—often younger—woman, friendships, and internet dating, this volume gives voice—both aggrieved and celebratory—to what it means to be cut loose.

      5 out of 5 stars A true-life glimpse into personal experience.......2006-11-05

Deftly edited by Nan Bauer-Maglin, Cut Loose: (Mostly) Older Women Talk About the End of (Mostly) Long-Term Relationships is an anthology of testimonies from women who experienced the end of a long-lasting relationship. Some felt abandoned, others confused, and yet all came to realize they were set free; sometimes the end of a long-term relationship spelled sexual, mental, or emotional liberation. Women in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships speak out, and the essays themselves are categorized into personal narratives, practical perspectives on the psychological, sociological, economic, sexual, and medical aspect of being left; and the shared experience of subgroups of women such as single women, widows, or abandoned daughters. A true-life glimpse into personal experience and the lasting lessons that can be drawn from it.

5 out of 5 stars I Bought One To Keep...And One To Share!!.......2006-10-03

In each story, there is at least a sentence...often more...that simply resonates inside you, because you have thought that, or felt that, done that or wanted to do that. I can hardly come up for air. And I know it must leave my hands when I finish, and go on to help another.
      What a great book!

1 out of 5 stars horrible, boring, and violent.......2003-07-07

When I bought this book right after my beloved series ended, I thought I was in for a good read... I was wrong. This book was incredibly boring, completely unbelievably stupid (the storyline was really dumb), and extremely violent. I was really surprised at how much violence and killing in cold blood happened in this book. The book was really boring and stupid. All my other Roswell fanatic friends felt the same (at least 10 people). I would never read this book again. Any of the other Roswell books, about the series or the Roswell High books, are a hundred times better than this boring violent stupid novel.

1 out of 5 stars A book about a show about a book, no thanks.......2002-08-19

This book is very disapointing. That is, if you've read the Roswell High series and keep up with the show, like me.

Having just finished #10 in Roswell High, I was disoriented in the caracter descriptions, both physicaly (in the RH series, Alex has red hair, for example) and psychologically. The way the caracters act and think correspond neither to the show or the original books. It's like if someone else was in their skin and it just doesn't feel right.

On top of that, I find the plot ridiculous, stupid and far-fetched. As if the author HAD to write a book and had no idea what about (no offence Greg).

It took me forever to finish reading it because I just couldn't get into it. This isn't very promising for the other books in this collection... Do yourselves a favor and treasure Melinda Metz's Roswell High books, she does, by far, a better job when it comes to develloping emotions and actions of our favorite out-of-this-world gang.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best...........2002-05-11

I've read this book twice because it is soooo good! The thing i like Best is everything. From the couples to the "skany homewrecker" Tess. It's funny and if you need a good Max and Liz moment read it! When i read it the second time it was better than the first time. So.... YOU.HAVE.TO.READ. LOOSE ENDS!!!

2 out of 5 stars Gangsta Rap Roswell.......2002-05-06

The plot is terrific. The characterizations are so-so and inconsistent. The villain is awful - not "he's a great bad guy," I mean written really terribly. It's the last that really sinks this otherwise good story.

Maria suggests her friend Liz and the perpetually serious alien cadre they hang out with get away from it all with a little trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Liz finds more than bats in the caves: the man who shot her two years before in the Crashdown Cafe is in the gift shop. Does he recognize her? If not, how long before he does? What should she do about it? Run? Call the cops? After all, officially, no one knows she was even injured - alien boyfriend Max healed her up, before anyone realized she'd been shot. The let-it-lie option evaporates quickly, when Max and his alien sister Isabel find out Liz's shooter is involved in some kind of scam with Air Force personnel - and, given their past fracases with the government, they have to find out what it's all about.

This book starts out great, and goes downhill fast. Its first flaw is the inconsistent and generally out-of-character portrayals of the principals. Non-series fans may not notice, anymore than they will the odd preoccupation Cox gives the characters with Tabasco sauce (an incidental running gag on the show, that Cox turns into something more), but of course series fans will be the primary purchasers of the novel.

Liz's shooter, the big bad guy of the piece, has the worst dialogue this side of a 1930's gangster movie, and that's no exaggeration. He doesn't actually say "coppers," but he might as well. He's also unbelievably careless and uncoordinated, for a man arranging sales of top secrets. He's just not very credible, in any department. His actions - and often those of the other characters as well - are bizarrely abrupt and inexplicable, even for a psychopath.

What the book does have going for it is the good story, a nice sense of humor, and likeable (if inconsistently accurate) central characters. If you can take the book's flaws, you might enjoy it, but it's not very indicative of the series as a whole and will probably disappoint most fans.

3 out of 5 stars The writings not that great but the story is ..........2002-01-30

A trip to the Carlsbad Caverns to relax turns into a dangerous fame of cat and mouse for the three aliens and their three human friends. At the gift shop Liz sees the man who shot her teo years ago in the Crashdown café - and now Liz is running for her life. The shooter, Morton, is up to something devious and dangerous, and Max and the others are driven to find out what he has hidden in the black briefcase. This is one of the most dangerous adventures for the five Roswell teens because Morton has a gun and he is only too happy to use it.

I found this book difficult to get into at first because Greg Cox has a very unusual way of writing. The overall story though is both interesting, and action packed. If you really like the TV series then you should give this book a go - I took two days to read it, but it was worth it in the end when I finally put it down. There are facts that are wrong, but overall Cox has tried to remain faithful to the TV series.

If you can't stand this book, don't let it stop you from reading "No good deed". The books are very different, and if you don't enjoy this book you are bound to like the next one in the series.

      5 out of 5 stars Mailbox Aunt!.......2007-04-11

I love being a Mailbox Aunt! In this world of techno, gotta-have-it-now, instant gratification world, writing is underestimated. This book gives you ideas on how fits into fits into and can enrich many areas of your life. My sister's kids have never known a world without the Internet, cell phones and e-mail; however, one of the biggest highlights of their week is receiving an envelope in the mail box (yes, snail mail) from Aunt Donna. Writing as a form of communication has become a lost art. I highly recommend Dr. Klauser's book by the same name of this book's Chapter 14, "Write It Down, Make It Happen." That is my favorite book by Dr. Klauser.

5 out of 5 stars Staying warm in the heart and true to it too.......2007-03-18

I agree with another reviewer that allowing the heart to express itself on paper can be a tremendous healing benefit. One of the most important tasks in life is to maintain a connection to our heart. Writing as a practice encourages the heart to speak and uses our right brain to create solutions. This is a beautiful practice from Henriette Ann Klauser along with her other book: Write it Down/Make it Happen.

5 out of 5 stars My copy is weathered, written in.... obviously much loved!.......2003-06-08

This book is a treasure trove of ideas, inspiration and many many reasons
to remember and ACT on "Putting Your Heart" on paper.

Klauser is an extremely engaging writer. I found myself smiling in
response to what I thought were personal inside jokes like a lyric
from "Sound of Silence" being weaved into a paragraph about the
impact of the vocalization of a baby upon a group of tired, unengaged
      adults.

This is a book I find myself continuing to return to over time. I don't

think I ever read through it front to back. Instead, I go to the Table
of Contents to find what calls to my spirit and then I usually find
myself reading a couple chapters before and after that chapter.

I can't imagine any reader coming away with less than 49 ideas to
try out and implement, much beyond what Klauser calls "Now You"
when she specifically asks you to apply what is in the chapter.

Read this book, treasure this book. You will soon notice it is becoming
weathered which is an honor bestowed upon books which are truly loved.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book for everyone!!.......2001-02-07

This book is full of great ideas on communicating with the ones you love. It is a book not only about being heard but hearing what loved ones have to say to you.

5 out of 5 stars Writing To Heal.......2000-10-29

As a writer, I find this book of imformative and creative ways to get your thoughts on paper, fabulous. As a mother who has had a child die, I found the chapter, 'Easing The Pain of Death' to be of interest. While I don't like the term 'recovery' for I feel a mother never recovers from the loss of a child (losing a child is not like breaking a bone, the bone does heal completely and there is recovery. The pain from a child's death will always remain), I was encouraged to read the message that writing does bring healing. I have found this to be true in my own experience. As an advocate for 'writing it down!' I recommend H. A. Klauser's book. ------Alice J. Wisler, author "Slices of Sunlight, A Cookbook of Memories".

      Book Description

Praised for its "cutting-edge dialogue, intriguing characters, and a spicy storyline,"* Electa Rome Parks's The Ties That Bind introduced a savagely honest look at modern romance. Now, in a back-to-back publishing event, Parks returns with her next novel of love and friendship and the betrayals of both-some forgiven, some never forgotten.

It's been five years since they trusted one another-and betrayed one another- only as friends and lovers could. Beautiful Mia, getting a second chance at love. Christian, who gave up his player card for the one woman he's not sure he can trust. And Brice, as irresistibly bad as ever. One woman can tame him-if he'd give her the chance: Kree, innocent but underestimated, and looking for the kind of passion that can change a life. When she finds it, it's going to come with a price. Sometimes, it doesn't take a lot to tear apart friends like these. All it takes is love.

5 out of 5 stars Thye ties that bind.......2007-05-14

I had a chance to meet the author, Electa Rome Parks, at my book club discussion on last week. The book was great and the author is very down to earth. Great easy summer read. Buy both the Ties that Bind and Loose Ends to get the full complete story. Great books!

      4 out of 5 stars Questions Answered.......2006-07-16

Sistah Girlz Book CLub (Atlanta, GA): This sequel to "The Ties That Bind", answered our many questions about the fate of Mia, Christian, and Brice. The realistic storyline kept us reading and prompted a good discussion. The story had a good ending, but did not leave us wanting another sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Mean, sexy, stupid, confusing..........2006-06-26

I'm not describing the book, but rather the characters!!! This book was GREAT!! I was emotionally tied to the characters because they were soooooooo freaking stupid and... well... STUPID!! Screwing up thier lives, the lives of others, and just not knowing what to do with themselves.

This book was much better written than her first with a lot more drama and a lot more sex! I COULD NOT believe some of the decisions and situations that Brice and Mia put themselves in but that is part of what makes her book good. You don't NEED to read the first book to read this one, but it does help. There history that she eludes to, but I think you can get by if you don't read her first one.

4 out of 5 stars Mia had to be crazy.......2006-05-17

I liked this book. I could not beleive Mia cheated with Brice after all he put her threw. Christain was a good man, and I am glad they found there way back to each other. However, I do beleive she should have told us more about what was going on with them.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Marvelous.......2005-10-25

Loose Ends is a good read from start to finish. You turn each page with intensity, trying to determine where the author is going. I read this book on the train. I took the local just so I wouldn't have to put it down quickly. The characters and plotlines can be understood without reading the sequel The Ties That Bind but I highly recommend reading the The Ties That Bind first so that you get a full picture of who these folks are. Mia is not the same in both books; you'll need to see how she evolved and to understand her connection to Brice. How can you love a man who abused you; whom you haven't laid eyes on in 5 years! You gotta read it to understand even if you don't believe it should be so. Read these books before the movie comes out or you're going to kick yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Memories of Mexico.......2007-04-02

As someone who has lived and worked in Mexico, this beautiful little book brought back a flood of memories of weekend excursions to San Miguel and Guanajuato. Ahh, rising early on a brisk sunny morning, catching the Flecha Amarillo for a day of shopping, exploring narrow, cobbled streets, and then finding that perfectly exotic shop at the back end of an unnamed side street. Practicing Spanish with the clerk, and then back to the central garden, the music, the vendors, the food smells, the music, the cathedral, and the reward of an ice cold cerveza with lunch. I read the book, and I then read it again. Absorbed the paintings, the photographs, the colors. I thought, "When will I get back? Will I get back?" I keep this book on my coffee table. A lovely reminder of the best of Mexico.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful essays.......2006-11-30

I recently traveled to San Miguel and found that this little book gave me insight into places and people that would never have been available to me as simply a tourist. The essays were thought provoking and lovely, the photography gave me a feel of personal relationship with the everyday life in SMA. I would recommend the book to every traveler to Mexico, it reflected the author's love of this very special city.

2 out of 5 stars quality overall poor.......2006-11-14

I was disappointed in the quality of the photos in this book and sold it shortly after buying it on Amazon. I've spent some time in SMA and took thousands of photographs there myself, and am working on a photo book of SMA as well.

So I was curious to see how this book was produced, what the quality was, etc. I hate to be critical but I think people need to know that the quality of the photographs is poor in this book, and it's a slim little paperback book as well, so if that matters, potential buyers should take note.

PS - As far as self-published books go, there seems to be some stigma about this to some people, but I have no problem with the practice and am all for it. Self-published books are often just as good (or better) as books published by traditional publishing companies.

On the other hand, I don't believe in cutting someone a lot of slack just because their book was self-published - if the quality is poor and the book is over-priced for what it contains, then I think it's better to be honest about it, and perhaps the author can create a better edition of the book in the future.

        5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-05-26

I don't usually write things like this but after reading the last review, I felt compelled to express my appreciation for this lovely book. This is a book that reflects the spirit and soul of this ancient and beautiful city. It will NOT tell you where to eat or stay but rather encourages you to open your heart that you too might experience the magic of the people and place that is San Miguel de Allende. Falkenstein writes almost in memoir style about her experiences sharing both her heart and the heart of this city. I found it utterly charming and have given it as gifts to friends who have traveled there.

1 out of 5 stars Little value for high cost.......2006-05-17

This slim (62 page) softback book is certainly not worth $[...]. I'm a long time Amazon customer and am returning a product for the first time in 8 years. Self-published by the author (I will certainly check for this in the future), this book's content consists of musings (few), white space (a lot), photos (some fuzzy, few high quality) and prints (buy one of the author's digital images for $[...]). What a disappointment. I was looking for some in depth, poetic essays on San Miquel in preparation for my first-time visit. There was nothing here to cast even a shadow on the essence of this city.
