Book Description

Ann Martin was the first to expose the fact that euthanized cats and dogs are common ingredients in many commercial pet foods. For this second edition, the updated and revised version of the grassroots bestseller, she expanded her research to find that pet food can also contain diseased cattle, contaminated meat, moldy grain, roadkill, and rancid fats from restaurants. Also new is a chapter on how cats and dogs are used to test the nutritional claims of pet food ingredients.

I learned what's really in pet food (dry or canned), read it and you'll definitely change your dogs (or cats) diet...

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ IF YOU HAVE PETS.......2007-08-04

We read the labels on our foods, now we can read and understand the pet food labels. If you don't want to buy the book just yet, do your pet a favor and look up 'animal digest' (a/k/a digest) and 'sodium bentonite'. This book is worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars A must-read, informative book.......2007-03-31

I agree with Sasha's comprehensive review - this is a must read book for ever pet owner. What you discover should get you to stop feeding your pets commercial dog foods.

In my opinion, there are better books on the market that detail how to feed your pets homemade meals. Other experts and vets disagree with the author's aversion to raw meat diets, yet most dogs thrive on such diets. If in doubt, find a holistic vet and work with him or her to transition your pet to an appropriate diet.

4 out of 5 stars Believe it! They are dying!!.......2007-03-11

A must read!! Very informative ,factual ,easy to read and understand. I have read many books on the subject and I am very informed myself so I am confident Ms. Martin has done her homework and knows what she is talking about. With that said I don't agree with everything she says. She does not believe in feeding raw meats and bones. I do understand her points and anyone feeding raw meats and bones and processing it themselves is taking a chance. However there are companies that make patties that are completely safe. With that said I find her book to be well organized going over every detail so completely you will not be left wondering what it was about!!! Take chapter one for instance. "What Goes Into Commercial Pet Food." She covers EVERY ingredient you will find on a pet food label and breaks it down and explains exactly what it is. She does this throughout the book making it so easy to understand. My copy of the book is full of highlights!! Chapter ten "Recipes For Cats And Dogs." Recipes are well researched and are nutritiously complete but I would have liked for there to be more recipes included. All in all this is a great book even though the subject matter is so very heartbreaking.

Since I have performance dogs, I was interested to find out about the food I'm feeding. I am appalled to learn about carcasses being included. The only food I have fed is either Canadae or Solid Gold. This book helped confirm that I am doing the right thing for my animals. Have recommended this book to all of my dog friends. It is a must read.

As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King

Book Description

A pioneering revolutionary prescription
for the health and long life of your pets

For two decades, Dr. Martin Goldstein--America's most successful, renowned holistic veterinarian--has healed and helped his animal patients with the same natural therapies that benefit humans. The results have been so astounding that today critically sick pets are brought to him from across the country for a new chance at life and health.

In this compelling, very accessible book, Dr. Goldstein explains exactly what holistic medicine is and how it works. By treating the root of a health problem instead of its symptoms, you too can help your animal to regain and maintain its own health, as nature intended. Dr. Goldstein also shares many remarkable true stories of supposedly terminally ill animals who have recovered to full wellness. Inside you'll discover

- Why our animals get sick, even when we strive to give them the best of care
- An exhaustive A to Z guide of pet ailments--and the best course of action
- Why vaccines can do more harm than good
- The link between diet and disease--and how the right diet can not only prevent disease but reverse it
- How acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and other alternative options work--safely and painlessly--to restore true health
- Specific guidance for the use of herbs, supplements, and natural remedies
- The good news (and the bad) about cancer in animals--including extraordinary new treatments and potential cures
- Coping with the inevitable death of your pet--both physically and psychologically
And much, much more

PLUS--the ultimate resource for holistic pet care: an extensive guide to holistic product manufacturers and stores, books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations!

5 out of 5 stars Excellant Book!!!!.......2007-10-01

This book truly makes alot of sense, and has opened a whole different perspective in pet health for me.I found it very hard to put this book down after I started reading it.I have to agree with other readers, that, you will never look at your pet's health and well being, the same again.Every pet owner should read this book!!!! I think it would make a really great gift for others as well.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!.......2007-09-16

This book is very informative,if just for reccommended feeding guidelines and vaccination awareness.Every cat and dog owner needs to read this and be aware of whats in our pets food.

5 out of 5 stars Real Food for Pets!.......2007-08-23

From personal experience, I know Martin Goldstein is right on with feeding pets real food.

For years, my Pug struggled with crystals in her diet...both acidic and alkaline. She was put on different Hill's Prescriptive Diet foods.

She was also going blind.

Two years ago, I thought--enough of this crappy food--I want the rest of her days (at that time I thought very limited) to have more quality. I started to feed her free-range chicken and premium canned food (because I knew it was balanced.)

She's still eating it and is now a healthy, almost 14 year old Pug! (I have since added meatloaf from free-range buffalo, brown rice and grated carrots.)
Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet

5 out of 5 stars a must have for all pet owners!.......2007-07-09

Dr. Goldstein's book truly changed the way I care for my companion animals. It sheds light on a new approach to caring for your pets. I found it very readable and clear. I especially liked the information on diet, and made changes to my pets foods that have already caused positive changes in their health. I recommend it uncondtionally.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2005-05-13

I thought my cat loved the seafood salad with feta and olives until I fed her the salmon ravioli with squash, oregano, and catnip. Even though she's always in my heart, I think she gets sad that I'm off working all day, and these recipes really do it for her. See also the delicious mango cat lassi and the tuna quiche with cilantro and artichokes. Three billion thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Totally charming!.......2003-11-30

In addition to the recipies, which are great fun, practically every page of this book is a feast for the soul with adorable, whimsical illustrations and quotes about famous cat lovers. My favorite is about Winston Churchill and his cat - I would love to quote it here but can't let the cat out of the bag!
I read this book aloud, in front of a cozy fire with my kitty Annie curled up on my chest - she purred through the entire book - it was a wonderful experience of the serenity of hearth and home enriched by a cat.
This book is about much more than recipies - it's about attitude and fun, and gave me permission to totally spoil my cats. I think any cat lover would find it irresistible.

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT.......2003-11-13

I actually bought this book as a gag .. to give to a friend whom is a fanatical cat lover. Boy was I wrong, the recepies are good, but so are others in this genre. What really caught me was the illustrations and the small stories in betwen, a tru feast for the eye .. and mind. It is worth every penny for any true cat lover out there.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for every cat lover out there!.......2003-10-09

I've been looking for this book since it was first in The Mail-Order Cat and am so happy to have found it! the recipes DO brighten my cat's life and MINE TOO!!!
I have friends who will be happy this book is found too! One of them has a gift store in Colorado and used to order this book all the time!"

Dr. Billinghurst has done it again. This is a great book for Raw feeders, which I am. I use all the Billinghurst books as my "Bible" of raw feeding and information.
A must have for every raw feeder IMO..

4 out of 5 stars Cuts to the bone.......2007-08-24

Suddenly you realize you are what you eat, and we are all designed to function best with the right diet, man or beast.

4 out of 5 stars Give Your Dog a Bone: The Practical Commonsense Way..........2007-05-15

Good information but very repetitive. The book should include a sample schedule or meal plan for feeding your dog but it doesn't. The author just provides some very broad feeding guidelines. Other than that, the very idea of feeding your dogs the way nature designed them to eat makes perfectly good sense to me. I first experimented with my own dog by giving him a raw chicken wing and my dog devoured it with relish!!! No hesitation there, as there was when I gave him cooked chicken. And indeed, my dog's breath really is sweet after all!!! It's raw from now on for my dog.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Quality of life issue.......2006-08-04

I was introduced to this diet by a relative. I have been personally involved in the rescue of abused dogs for years. I am a rather no-nonsense type of person. I have no interest, normally, in alternative medicine, meditation, accupucture or any other sort of "alternative lifestyle" trends. HOWEVER, this is a book of significance for any who really care about those animals, who by no choice of their own, depend upon human beings for their existance.
Basicly, I see a dog as a dog, not a little, slightly retarded person. If a dog can be saved, save it and give a good life. If a dog can't be saved, give it as much comfort and love as possible in its remaining time. I have found this diet to turn around animals faster and to a more robust state of health than I have often believed possible for my animals. Yes, the book is not going to win any awards for literature, but I read this book for informaion, not to play at being petty editor or a know it all. I consider this to be now a valuable addition to my library. Sure you can get a lot of information off the internet about BARF, but this book is important and the author should be supported by purchasing his extrodinary effort. I know what I know, and I know this information is significant. And, by the by, dogs really are ominvores.

3 out of 5 stars Redundant..........2005-10-14

After reading many websites on the BARf diet, I was rather disappointed in this book. Our dog trainer recommended it so I purchased it(rather expensive). The author repeats over and over what could have been said in a few chapters. Commercial dog food is bad and bones are good pretty much sums it up. It would have been nice to have an index to look up specifics, like the actual diet.If you do a search on the BARf diet on the web you'll get precise, comprehensive information for no cost!

This book gives the administrator and anyone who supports the teachers in a school some great things to think about and ways to help the teachers on a day to day basis.

5 out of 5 stars An Educator's Review.......2007-05-06

I had the honor to see Ms. Connors speak at a teacher conference this past week. I was feeling a bit jaded over the profession of teaching after completing my second year of teaching and after completing a research study proposal on the sad state of teacher retention due to low administrative support. I was at an oh-too-typical low point...

Ms. Connors' words (both in spoken and written form--I flew through her book after listening to her speech) really hit home. This is a book that every teacher and every administrator should read. It gives simple solutions that could and would make a big impact upon the current state of education today. I encourage every person involved in teaching students to read this book and think about the roles they currently play and the role they could play. THANK-YOU MS. CONNORS for humorously yet seriously pointing out both the problem and the necessary solutions.

I was flabbergasted when Neila Connors and my principal casually walked into my classroom today (11/11/2005). Her personality is as charming as her book. As a veteran, "rogue" teacher for the past three decades, I completely understand what she means by: "If You Don't Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students." Not only do I believe that literally administrators must "break bread" with teachers, but also, they must give them the positive psychological strokes. Neila Connors has all the necessary "how-to's" in her book. It is a MUST read book!!!

2 out of 5 stars Comment on Jaundice and breastfeeding.......2007-02-02

HI, I was just browsing through this book online and I came across the paragraph on jaundice and breastfeeding. This information was supremely inaccurate on this particular subject. The book says that breastfeeding makes jaundice worse and that you will have to stop nursing for your child to be cured of it. I am a very well read La Leche league member and breastfeeding is well known to reverse jaundice by helping your baby to excrete the bilirubin build up. The more often you nurse the faster your baby gets rid of the dead red blood cells. It is the best treatment for jaundice despite was this book says. Stopping brestfeeding during the crucial first weeks is dangerous for your baby's nutrition and immunity and bad for mom in terms of losing your milk supply and suffering engorgement or mastitis. Other than that topic I didn't read the rest of the book so it may otherwise be a good book.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS book..........2007-01-17

We love this book. Except for the oysters (my kids just don't get into the texture), we follow everything on this book and our kids are SO MUCH healthier than their friends. They eat better at home AND they make healthier choices when they go to parties/events, as they are not used to so much sugar! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to help their kids improve their immunity through diet.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Moms.......2007-01-06

I found two things to be most helpful about this book: 1) the information on the essential fatty acids that young children need in their diets from flax oil, evening primrose, cod liver oil, etc, especially if they have allergies; and 2) the specific doses of certain vitamins and minerals for each age group.

My son's allergies to milk and wheat are gone, in part, I believe because I introduced flaxseed oil into his diet nine months ago as result of reading this book. Flaxseed oil, I found is the easiest to incorporate into a young child's diet because it's readily available at health food stores and it doesn't have any taste. I generously poured it onto my son's oatmeal every morning and it provided a good source of fat for him and, in my opinion, played a role in eliminating his allergies. Evening primrose and cod liver oils were a little tougher to be consistent with, but if your child has severe allergies, it's a small price to pay for the potential positive outcome.

As for vitamins and minerals, Dr. Galland has specific recommendations for safe upper dosing levels for different age groups. (Who knew that a 2-3 year old can have up to 1000mg/day of vitamin C as long as his tummy will tolerate it?)

I also found the chapter on nutrition for pregnant and nursing moms to be really helpful (for example, too much of the mineral manganese in the mother's diet can be toxic to a nursing infant up to six weeks of age).

The main concern for me, however, had to do with Dr. Galland's recommendation for so much soy in children's diets. There has recently been much controversy over the safety of soy for kids because of the high amounts of isoflavones or naturally occuring plant-based estrogen. Babies on soy formula have been observed as young as three years old to go into puberty, it is believed, due to the estrogen in soy. [...] So I wonder if Dr. Galland were to write an updated or revised version of this book, if he would still recommend so much soy for children.

At any rate, the book is a brilliant reference point for moms and it's easy to pick and choose what is doable and helpful for your child and lifestyle. I consider it a valuable and insightful must-read for every mom. Thanks, Dr. Galland, for sharing your expertise on child nutrition. It's so refreshing to hear from nutritionally oriented MDs who don't resort to medication for every problem.

5 out of 5 stars It's not that hard & a great book on eczema........2006-10-25

Why feed your kids something that actually depletes the nutrition you are trying so hard to give them [such as hydrogenated oils which prevent your child's body from absorbing other nutrients it needs]?

This book makes it clear what kid's need & what they don't need. I found the explanation of which vitamins/minerals can be too much - blocking absorption of other necessary nutrients - very helpful. Everyone I have turned on to the book has loved it!

Another thing I found helpful was the chapter on what to start feeding your 6 month - 1 yr. old. It lists what to start them on & what to hold off on & explains why. This is far more detailed than our pediatrician's information. The prenatal chapter is good as well & I wish I had this book when I was pregnant.

Especially easy & helpful is the information on which supplements are beneficail for your child's specific needs/problems like hyperactivey, yeast infections, eczema, cradle cap, fatigue, diabetes ect..

It's really not that hard. It's very basic nutritional information just well explained. It's really not difficult to feed your kids & yourself basic whole foods. Read the labels! You may quickly realize these are lifestyle changes that you want to make since it is so beneficial to your child's health & development of their brain, eyes, etc.

Great format & an easy read.
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE FOUND ON ECZEMA FOR CHILDREN OR ADULTS.

Chemical-Free Kids: How to Safeguard Your Child's Diet and Environment by Allan Magaziner, Linda Bonvie, and Anthony Zolezzi
This book better explains the importance of organic foods among other things.
Another great format & an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-10-19

I agree with one reviewer who said that it is difficult to pull off. But, I will still give this one 5 Stars. First I never knew how much important EFAs are and this book explains that well. Second it talks about tackling EFA and other mineral defficiencies for kids of various ages starting from Prenatal(pregnancy). I love the format in which this was written. Very easy to refer. My three and a half yr old is a very picky eater. I might not make her eat all the healthy stuff thats said in the book. But I started rubbing FLAX oil onto her skin, and her eczema is getting better.

The book also tells you about anti-nutrients. I now think a little before giving junk food to my kid. Recipes sound good but I never tried them yet. Hopefully I will get my kid to eat atleast a few of those. Highly recomment to parents who worry why your kid gets sick more often and suffers more than all the rest of the neighbourhood kids.

Book Description

Remember how simple school lunches used to be? You'd have something from every major food group, run around the playground for a while, and you looked and felt fine. But today it's not so simple. Schools are actually feeding the American crisis of childhood obesity and malnutrition. Most cafeterias serve a veritable buffet of processed, fried, and sugary foods, and although many schools have attempted to improve, they are still not measuring up: 78 percent of the school lunch programs in America do not meet the USDA's nutritional guidelines.

Chef Ann Cooper has emerged as one of the nation's most influential and most respected advocates for changing how our kids eat. In fact, she is something of a renegade lunch lady, minus the hairnet and scooper of mashed potatoes. Ann has worked to transform cafeterias into culinary classrooms. In Lunch Lessons, she and Lisa Holmes spell out how parents and school employees can help instill healthy habits in children.

They explain the basics of good childhood nutrition and suggest dozens of tasty, home-tested recipes for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. The pages are also packed with recommendations on how to eliminate potential hazards from the home, bring gardening and composting into daily life, and how to support businesses that provide local, organic food.

Yet learning about nutrition and changing the way you run your home will not cure the plague of obesity and poor health for this generation of children. Only parental activism can spark widespread change. With inspirational examples and analysis, Lunch Lessons is more than just a recipe book—it gives readers the tools to transform the way children everywhere interact with food.

5 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT INFO FOR PARENTS!!.......2007-10-08

As a pediatrician, this book gives parents the important information they need inorder to have their children eat healthy. This book is a must have with the current rise in childhood obesity. AVOIDING THE 15 BIGGEST MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE: A PEDIATRICIAN'S PERSPECTIVE

3 out of 5 stars a book about improving school lunch policies.......2007-05-16

The photograph on the cover of this book is a bit misleading. The topic of "Lunch Lessons" has a lot more to do with improving American school hot lunch programs than it is about packing healthy brown bag lunches for your own child. It does include a list of recipes at the back of the book. Many sound great, like the "Three Cheese-Vegetable Strata" and the "High Protein Squares" (a homemade replacement for power bars). They also look very time-consuming. Although I haven't tried any of the recipes, it seems to me that making your own pizza dough for the "Pizza Wheels" might take a bit longer than anyone wants to spend making lunch. Actually, I think the recipes are really in here to inspire the people who make hot lunches in school cafeterias.

Like other reviewers I am interested improving school nutrition policies. I head a health committee at my daughter's school dedicated to improving nutrition and fitness for the students and their families. As such this book should be a perfect fit. Unfortunately for me, my daughter attends a private school and almost all of the information in this book, including the reference list in the back, is only helpful if your child attends a public school. (I've actually found more useful information on government web sites than I have in this book!) That doesn't mean it's been completly useless. There are a few great tidbits to be found here and there. I found the recommendation about "laptop lunches" really great. I don't think I would have found out about the company and their fabulous lunch boxes had it not been for this book. (The cover photograph shows a "laptop" lunchbox.)

In the end I think I would recommend this book to anyone interested in taking on the enormous problem of unhealthy school lunches in public schools. If you're looking for new ideas for your child's lunchbox there are probobly better books out there. If like me you're trying to improve the health policies at a private school there probably won't be many ideas in "Lunch Lessons" that you can use exactly as described.

4 out of 5 stars Many good features to Choose From.......2007-01-06

I read this book because I am involved with several committees dealing with healthy eating and fitness issues for school children in our area, and because I'm very interested in this topic. "Lunch Lessons" proved to be very informative and provided lots of ideas on changes that parents, teachers and policy makers can be making with their own children and/or with programs at school. It gave a nice overview on the history of the School Lunch program and how it has changed over the years. There are interesting summaries of innovative programs that are going on in different parts of the country, helpful resource guides and a policy guide. And it has some GREAT recipes that I intend to try at home and possibly use in some cooking demonstrations I will help organize for children. Because I am a registered dietitian, I did take issue with some of the information, especially in the chapter on Basic Childhood Nutrition, such as the absorption of calcium from plant sources, the quality of research on relating food dyes and additives to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and whether we should be changing recommendations on feedint infants under 1 year of age. Other parts of the chapter were, however, well done. Also, I do not feel all readers will "buy in" to the ideas for organic foods, switching to local food vendors, composting, etc. But pulling out any of the ideas on promoting a greater variety of minimally-processed foods, well prepared, in moderate portions, and eaten at a leisurely pace will benefit many. The distressing rise of obesity and health problems among our youth mandates change; and these experienced authors offer good ideas for action.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for any parent.......2006-11-15

Lunch Lessons begins by stating everything that is wrong with the American diet. It clearly explains what children should be eating and explains why children need to stay away from additives, high fructose corn syrup, fast food, trans fat, etc. Did you know that children born in 2000 and after who are following the current trend of the fast food, prepared food nation, are facing a shorter life span than their parents? I didn't but it makes since with obesity and diabetes on the rise in the young.

There is a chapter devoted to outlining the caloric needs of a growing child, which food groups are actually necessary for correct development and a helpful chart explaining portion sizes and the number of servings to eat per day based upon the childs age. The book is filled with tools to help anyone learn to change their eating habits and lifestyle (because it is a huge lifestyle change) and I'd bet even those without children would find it a very useful reference and jumping off point for dietary change.

The middle section of the book is about several school systems who bravely changed the menu by eliminating pre-packaged processed food and brought in whole foods from local farmers. The stories, especially the comments from the children, are inspiring and hopeful. What surprised me the most were the positive social experience these children enjoyed while tending to a garden and preparing their healthy meals.

The recipe section is filled with lunch options I've never before considered. I tend to get stuck in a rut with whole grain bread, natural PB&J, turkey cold-cuts, turkey hot dogs, etc. I'm not sure if my kids will go for some of the more radical options like couscous (especially my meat loving son) but I'm going to give it a shot. I never thought of packing home baked mac & cheese or chicken pot pie but those are two faves I'm betting will get them more excited about lunch.

This is a book that will remain in personal collection and one I'm betting I'm going to be picking up on a weekly basis as I prepare my meals.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-11-10

For any parents and education or health professionals who are working to improve the health of our nation's children, this book is a must-read. In addition to a wealth of valuable information about strategies to improve school lunch programs (and what's in the lunchbox!), the book also reminds us why we must continue our efforts to make schools healthy havens for our kids. I do think that what they outline reflects a high ideal that may not be attainable, but hey, why not shoot for the stars?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2007-06-09

I can't get over how incredible this book is! I was excited by the titles and reviews but wasn't sure how it would be received by my kids. They were rivoted by the book (my intonations helped a bit ;) and as soon as we finished we did some great role-playing of what makes the monster grow and shrink. I'm so happy - what a great tool to refer to in our everyday conversations! THANK YOU authors!

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-20

I used this book to review and present to an elementary school audience. Very good!

4 out of 5 stars MY BOYS ARE READING.......2002-10-15

I am amazed that my kids have jumped on this book and even offered to loan it to a teacher. Easy to read and funny as well this book has it all, in a way kids can understand. Each of my two boys has read and reread this self esteem guide for youn adult/ preteen.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Feed the Monster..........2002-07-11

I think this is a great book with such a great message. I plan on reading this to my son as much as possible! This is a great book to start reading early on to help children better accept themselves, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Kids and Adults Will Benefit.......2002-03-09

Both my 4 1/2 year old son and my 6 1/2 year old daughter loved this book and the others in the
series we've read. The pictures and the advice are fun, entertaining and helpful. Be warned,
however, this book is a kids' style book. Don't let the high price fool you. It is structured
like the longish Dr. Seuss Books (Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, etc.). The only reason it
didn't get 5 stars is the high price tag. Most of the kids books we've bought like this one are
about 6-9 dollars. ...is quite a lot for a 5-10 minute read. Other than the price tag, however
this book is great for the grade school age kid. I worry that the 8-10 year olds may find it a
little babyish or uncool, but K-2nd age is perfect. Pre-schoolers may be a bit young to get all
the benefits of it, but they will enjoy it anyway.

Book Description

This comprehensive handbook, acclaimed when it was first published in 1976 as "one of the most useful reference manuals on diagnostic entomology yet produced," has now been completely revised and expanded to reflect recent advances in technology and the wealth of new information affecting the "Green Industry."

Augmented by 241 full-color plates, it gives the essential facts about more than 900 species of insects, mites, and other animals that injure woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada, and provides means of quick visual identification of both the pests and the damage they cause.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it!.......2002-08-14

This book is on my "short list" of essential references. Species are covered in clear, concise descriptions. This well organized volume makes hunting for similar species as easy as turning a page. The photos? I can't say enough about the clear, photos that make insect identification a good deal easier!

While an excellent book for the landscape professional, scientist, or advanced gardener, beginners might be a bit overwhelmed by the technical language and scientific names.

5 out of 5 stars This is a much needed and fabulous manual........1998-06-18

When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf.
